My answer for you is – social media. Social media is the best place to advertise tutoring services online .

A lot of people have been coming to me and asking me how to find students online . Whether you teach English online , teach any other subject online, sell online courses from your own website , or get paid to write lesson plans – my answer is social media.

Then they say “ How do I monetize my social media?”, “How do I take people from my social media pages and make them buy my lessons and get them to buy my courses or whatever it is that I am selling?” They say “I’ve asked all the experts out there and I am coming to you now and saying, “Kris how do I do this?”.

So, I tell them it’s really easy. And it really is. There are just three steps to follow to learn how to advertise tutoring on social media and get paying clients. But before you know the three steps there are three rules of the marketplace that you need to know.

  1. Money = value

First of all, the money that you make is proportionally related to the value that you put out into the marketplace. If you don’t put any value out, you don’t get any money back. You can post tuition ads, look for the best tutor advertisement sample or tuition advertising format, but if you don’t provide value, you won’t last.

  1. Money = goodwill

The second thing that you need to know is the money that you make is proportionally equal to the goodwill you have in the marketplace. You can advertise tutoring services online every second of your free time, but if people don’t trust you and you don’t have goodwill built, it won’t last.

  1. Money = amount of offers that you make

And then, also, the income that you make is equal to the amount of offers that you make in the marketplace. And a lot of people hear this and they go out there and they just start making offer after offer after offer and that’s a mistake. Because first you need to focus on value. You actually have to do those three things in order.

So, if you don’t put any value out, you are not going to get anything back. It doesn’t matter how many offers you make. Now, sure, you could dump a bunch of money into paid ads and make the best tutor advert in the world and maybe you are great at marketing and you could figure it out and you could get a few sales. But typically that is not what’s going to happen and if you are reading this post, then probably you don’t have a lot of money to dump into paid ads and you can’t invest a lot to advertise tutoring services online like that .

So, instead what we need to do is we need to follow these three steps:

  1. Build value

So, step number one was “build value”. And that should be mission number one for you. That should be the most important thing at the top of your list right now. And there is a really easy way that we can do that. There are three ways that you can build value for your audience and people who watch you or read your posts.

  1. You need to find out what situation those people are in right now. So, where are they in their journey? So for example, if you are teaching English online, find out their level, what they have learned before. Or if you want to start teaching art classes you need to find out what skills they have so far.
  2. You need to find out where they are going on their journey, where they want to be.
  3. You need to start helping them go down that path. You need to become the guide who shows them the way to go from where they are right now to where they want to be. So, that’s a really easy way for you to provide value to people. Like I said before, you can’t become an online tutor and start a tutoring business without providing value.

And the interesting thing is that once you start providing value to them, you are building goodwill on the market place and that’s step number two.

  1. Build goodwill.

You want to build goodwill. And then, that makes it really easy to do step number three:

  1. Make offers.

It just makes it so easy to make offers at this point. Now, making offers is also another thing that a lot of teachers have trouble with and they say, “OK. Make an offer. How do I do that, Kris?”. So, here is how:

  1. First you are going to say, “Here is what I’ve got”. You’re going to say, “Hey! It’s me! Look at this new thing I’ve got!”. That’s it. Really easy, right?
  2. Step number two of making offers is this. You are going to say: “Here’s what it does.” You are going to say: “This is the new thing that I’ve got and here is benefit A, benefit B, benefit C. This is how it’s going to help you.”
  3. Step number three of making offers is you’re going to tell them what they need to do next. So, you’re going to say, “If you like this new thing that I’ve got, then go to myrandomwebsite.com and enroll in my courses / sign up for lessons with me / book a free consultation”, whatever it is.

So, that’s a really easy way for you to just go right through these three steps. And that’s how you are going to advertise as a tutor and monetize things. So, that’s how you can start selling online courses , or your online lessons, or selling your own stuff online.

Now, if you want to go out there and get sponsored by a company or something like that, and get paid just to say that you use a product or to show something on Instagram or something like that, then I’m not your guy. I’m your guy if you want to learn how to sell lessons or sell online courses or other teaching products online and especially if you want to advertise as a teacher using social media. Then, I can absolutely help you with that.

The most effective local offline marketing methods for freelance private tutors.

The single biggest challenge that new businesses face is finding clients. As a private tutor, finding your first students can be tricky, especially if there are already other tutors operating in your area.

However, just because there are already other tutors out there, it doesn’t mean that there’s no room for you. In fact, if anything, it gives you an indication that there’s a demand for tutoring in your area.

To help you get your tutoring business off the ground, I’ve put together this post, based on the dozens of conversations I’ve had with private tutors about local marketing. These methods are among some of the most effective ways that private tutors grow their student base.

Word of Mouth Referrals

Even in today’s technology-obsessed world, word of mouth remains the single best source of work for private tutors in the UK.

I guess people do still talk to each other after all!

However, the main difficulty with word of mouth marketing is that you first need to establish yourself and your business in your local area.

The single easiest way to do this is simply to tell people about your services and ask them to pass on your number if they know anyone who is looking for a tutor for their children.

Although initially this method can be a bit of a slow-burner, give it a few weeks and you should see an increase in the number of enquiries you receive. And best of all, it doesn’t cost a penny.

However, if you do have some cash to spare and are willing to make a small investment in marketing your tutoring business, then you might find the following methods effective in bringing you more students.

Handing out Business Cards (Old School Style)

An alternative to simply asking people to pass on your phone number is to hand them a business card with all your details displayed in one place.

Although an old school marketing method to some, people still love receiving a business card and for most, it carries a sense of privilege that they’ve been entrusted to spread the word about your business.

By handing out a few cards to everyone you talk to, not only will you gain more students but you’ll present a professional image, which will improve your credibility.

Distributing Leaflets and Displaying Posters

Some tutors advise against posting leaflets through neighbours’ doors, whereas other swear by their effectiveness. Personally, I haven’t had much success with leafleting but because others have, I feel they’re worthy of a mention here.

I would advise taking a tentative approach to leafleting in the beginning in order to test the water. Maybe do a print run of 50 leaflets or so and post them through doors that you think are likely to have families with school age kids living within.

If, after your initial efforts, you haven’t had any success, then you know this method isn’t worth pursuing.

However, a local marketing method that is pretty much guaranteed to bring you more work is displaying posters or adverts in local shop windows, community centres, libraries and town halls. After an initial investment of petrol (or pedal power) to get you around all these places, your efforts should be rewarded well, given that you can potentially reach hundreds of people a day with your adverts. Just make sure that you’re allowed to post in these places first, or at least have asked for permission to do so.

Get your Name in the Local Press

Given how accessible the internet is these days, people don’t read newspaper classifieds like they used to, so paying for a tiny advert in your local paper probably isn’t going to generate much business.

However, a local news story about your business will.

What is it about your tutoring services that makes you stand out from the crowd? Are you already known in the local area? Do you teach an unusual subject? Do you have a unique qualification? Do you use unconventional teaching methods? If you can give your local newspaper a unique story angle, they may be keen to write an article about the launch of your business.

A featured article in your local newspaper can help create a buzz about your business and increase demand for your services.

Register with a Private Tutoring Agency

One of the biggest benefits of registering with a private tutoring agency is that you’ll have a ready-made client list waiting for you without having to do any of your own marketing. Tutoring agencies will also normally apply for a DBS certificate on your behalf, which will help show your credibility to prospective students and parents.

Tutoring agencies set the bar high when it comes to recruiting tutors, and that’s a good thing. If you have a proven track record of getting students results or attended a top UK university, you could secure your place at one of the more prestigious tutoring centres in the country.

You should bear in mind however, that tutoring agencies will probably take a commission on every lesson that you give, meaning that you might make slightly less money than you could being freelance. On the other hand though, what you might lose in profit, you will save in time and money in marketing your own business.

ESL Tutor then deducts a commission from this amount before transferring the money to the tutor. The commission percentages range from 24% to 36% depending on your rank. 2. Pro Tutor – Pro Tutor membership is a paid membership at US$29.95 per month or $299.50 per year. Pro Tutors can have one-on-one lessons at $22 or group classes to which they can set their own prices. In addition, they can create self-study courses which they can sell on the website. All lessons and courses are subject to a commission deduction of between 12% and 24% depending on their rank.

It’s the big question when you’re starting out: how do you advertise as an online English teacher and get students? The online world is a big place and there are a lot of language learners out there looking for teachers, but where do you find them?

Teachers have three options when it comes to working online:

  1. Work for an online teaching company.
  2. Use an online marketplace that connects students and teachers.
  3. Go freelance and source students yourself.

Working for an online company is a great way to get started and build up experience. It’s why we recommended starting off this way in our previous post about how to find your first online TEFL job . But if you’re aiming to maximise your earnings and have full control over when and how much you work, then you want to focus on #3.

We won’t lie, there’s a lot of work involved establishing yourself as an online English teacher. The rewards really make it worth it, though, so read on to find out about some of the best ways of finding students online.

Online marketplaces and teaching platforms

A good middle-way between working for an online company and being completely freelance is to use an online marketplace. These websites allow you to create a profile, set your own rates and hours, and find students.

You’ll still need to promote yourself within the marketplace – with lots of other English teachers to compete with you need to stand out if you’re going to attract students. Creating a strong introduction video can be a great way to do this, but you’ll also need to put careful thought into how you price your lessons. If you go in too high then you might find yourself struggling for clients.

Verbling, italki, and Preply are three popular marketplaces for EFL teachers to advertise on. Each one takes a commission, so make sure to find out how much this is and what their requirements are.


Social media

Social media is a fantastic way of reaching and engaging with English language learners. Don’t make the mistake of stretching yourself too thin and setting up profiles on every social media platform out there, though. Quality is better than quantity.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok are all platforms that can work great for online English teachers. Different content is required for each one, which is why it’s not feasible to try and maintain a presence on all of them – that would be an entire job in itself! Instead, do a bit of research into the users of each platform and focus your attention on those where you’re most likely to reach your target students. For example, if you’re aiming to teach Business English then LinkedIn and Facebook are where you should be, rather than TikTok, which has a very young user base.

Using social media is a great way to share interesting content and get creative. You’re not there to say ‘hire me to teach you teach English’ constantly – ‘buy, buy, buy’ messaging isn’t going to get you far. Instead, you’re building your brand by sharing useful resources, tips, and thoughts, all while giving prospective students a sense of you as a person and teacher. This then leads to them hiring you!

Paid advertising

Facebook and Google Ads are two popular forms of paid advertising that can really yield results – if you know how to use them correctly. It’s incredibly easy to waste money if you don’t know what you’re doing, so make sure to get clued up first!

Facebook Blueprint is a great place to start, with lots of short courses you’ll be guided you through how to set up Facebook ads that deliver for you. And Google Skillshop will similarly help you with Google Ads.

With effective ads you can target English language learners – whether they’re in a particular country, of a certain age, or even have specific interests. This means it’s possible, with clever targeting, to reach internet users who are actively interested in learning English and improving their skills.

Targeting, while essential to the success of paid ads, is just one part of it. You also need to create the ad itself, something potential students are going to want to click on to find out more. This is where some basic marketing know-how will serve you well: think about the purpose of your ad. The very basic marketing funnel involves three stages: awareness, consideration, and conversion. Learning about each stage will help you better understand how to create ad campaigns that will ultimately lead to conversions.

And don’t forget about the landing page! Your ad is going to encourage them to click, so where does that click lead them? This leads us to…

Your website

As a freelance English teacher you really need your own website. This is where potential students will be able to find out about what it is you do, so think about the sort of things they’re going to want to see. Here’s what we recommend including as a minimum:

  • A homepage, which clearly and succinctly explains what it is you offer.
  • An ‘About me’ page, which tells students a bit about you and your personality. You can also include your CV here, or have it on a separate page.
  • A blog, to share your thoughts, resources, and information for students.

You can also create a landing page, as already mentioned, which is specifically made for the people you’ve targeted through paid advertising. There’s lots of information online about how to make a good landing page and why you should be using one.

Don’t think that after you’ve created a website you can sit back and wait for students to come to you. If only it were that easy! Unless you’re an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) pro, your site is unlikely to immediately rank on Google in a significant enough way for you to get organic traffic – although you absolutely should endeavour to make your site as SEO-friendly as possible! This means you need to be putting in the work to direct students to it – through the likes of social media and paid advertising.

Gumtree and other classified ads websites

Another option for advertising is to use classified ad websites to post about your services. Gumtree and Craigslist are popular sites with region-specific listings.

These sites can be a good way of targeting students from specific areas of the world. Search for the local listings for specific countries/areas – these will likely be in that country’s language (tip: use a web browser like Google Chrome that will translate for you) – and post your ad in the relevant section.

You can post your advert in English, or – if you have the skills or can get someone to do it for you – translate it into your students’ first language. This makes it much easier for students with beginner to intermediate levels of English to understand exactly what it is you’re offering as a teacher. Always think about how to make your marketing as easy and clear as possible!

Private Tuition – How To Find A Good Tutor – Articles Surfing

Many teachers earn a nice little tax free income by giving private tuition. This is not officially a tax free income, but very few declare it on their income tax return.

Private tuition can be extremely beneficial to students. It can boost their confidence, fill in knowledge gaps and give practice in answering examination questions.

Finding individual help for your son or daughter is not cheap. You may be able to find a teacher who will work at your house for ‘5 an hour, but, you have to ask yourself why he is prepared to work for such little reward.

A good tutor will have a full diary and will be able to command a reasonable hourly fee. I charge ’25 for one hour with a GCSE student and ’30 for AS or A2 work. I also have a full diary and do not need to advertise, as I get my tutees from word of mouth recommendations.

‘How do you find a good tutor?

Ask friends. You may be given names to ring, or names to avoid.
Advertise in the newspaper or answer newspaper or postcard adverts from tutors.
Ring a local school that you know has at least one good teacher in the subects you are interested in.

‘How can you check a tutor out?

Ask him, or her, for references.
Find out which school or college the tutor works in. Ring and ask if there is a teacher there by that name.

‘Is it worth going through an agency?

Tuition agencies take a very large slice off the payment you make to the tutor, typically about a third. Good tutors do not need to work for agencies. The agency has usually checked out the tutors it uses, so at least you are not likely to be employing a paedophile.

‘What precautions can I take?

Leave the door open in the room where the tutor and student are working. Listen to see how much teaching is happening. Go in and out a few times. Never leave your daughter in the house alone with a male tutor. Some tutors ask you to stay in while they are working, to avoid the possibility of malicious or unfounded allegations being made.

Private tuition can make an enormous difference to an individual’s chances of success at GCSE or A-level, but only if you start early in the final school year. Leaving things until the Easter before the exams will just be wasting your money. It takes time to build trust between a tutor and student and to establish full two way communication.

Private tutoring is a rewarding and flexible career option. Here are some tips to get you started as a private tutor.

1. Get clear on the legals

It’s often said that the private tuition industry is unregulated in the UK. However, general aspects of the law still apply in this line of work.

First of all, you’ll need to keep records of your income, and pay tax and National Insurance. Even if you’re employed elsewhere, you must register for self-assessment if you do any part-time tutoring work.

Secondly, if you intend to teach at home you’ll need to make sure that it’s a safe environment for your students. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires that you do a simple risk assessment, so look out for trailing wires, frayed carpets or a cluttered work space.

Essential precautions when tutoring children include having the parent or carer present in the same room, or in an adjoining room with the door open. You should also avoid physical contact and social relations with children. For example, don’t email or message the student without copying in their parent or carer.

The so-called ‘enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) certificate’ proves that there is no known reason why an individual may not work with children. 3. Streamline your credentials

Before you set up as a tutor, you’ll need to get your CV in order. Think carefully about your motivation and relevant experience – you don’t want to be underprepared when you are demonstrating to potential clients that you’re right for the job.

You can enhance your credibility in various ways. For example, you could join The Tutors’ Association, which organises Continuing Professional Development (CPD), or join an organisation relevant to your teaching subject, such as the Association of Teachers of Mathematics.

References from employers or tuition clients can be invaluable, and setting up your own website, blogging or joining a well-respected tuition agency will all enhance your reputation.

If you don’t have enough experience or confidence, there are charities that will train you to volunteer as a tutor with under-privileged children. One example is Action Tutoring.

4. Stay safe

There are various safety issues that you should consider when you are teaching privately.

Private tuition insurance is a useful option for protecting you in the event of being sued by a client. It usually covers two aspects – public liability and professional indemnity – and is another marker of professionalism for private tutors.

This is the final part of a two-part blog for tutors about how to increase the number of students they can work with. Does this sound like you? Are you looking for some helpful hints and tips to get you started with marketing?

If you haven’t already seen my previous blog on how to market yourself as a tutor please do read that one first before this one. However, if you have digested all of that information, then let me give you some effective promotional activities that tutors can do on a small budget.

1. Get Your Timing Right

You may already know that some tutoring is seasonal. There can be slow months and incredibly busy months. So when you market yourself as a tutor you need to get your timing right. Think about timing your marketing to revolve around exam dates like SATs, GCSEs or entrance exams, when tutors are at their busiest.

2. Make Sure You’re Easy to Find

The best thing you can do is make your tutoring business easy for your students to find. Generate an online presence by using online directories, for example, School Guide, which is free for The Tutors’ Association (TTA) members to advertise with.

It is also really easy and free to create a business page on Facebook. You can take your publicity further on Facebook and even use paid advertising. Before you pay for advertising, be sure to set yourself an objective. Do you want more page likes? Do you want more people to sign up for a trial lesson?

For as little as £5 per week you can put an advert in local newspapers. You can also advertise in free community directories. You’ll need to write at least 200 words selling your amazing tutorials and some great photos of yourself. Finally, you can sign up for a free ‘My Business’ page with Google and then direct traffic to your tutoring website.

3. Be creative

This may be good news for arty tutors! Design a simple poster and put it up in a school or university. Try to make people laugh or get their attention with a pun in your poster. Good news for the not-so-arty tutors is that it doesn’t need to be anything fancy. When you market yourself, short and simple should do the trick.

Another top tip that will take a little bit more time and effort is to create a short video of yourself. Videos will give potential students a taster of your teaching style and lesson content. You can then share these videos on your Facebook page and on your website. If you don’t feel up for any of this creative stuff, then agencies can do advertising for you, but they will take a commission.

4. Spread the word

As I mentioned in part one of this blog series, word of mouth is very important so think about offering a referral service. For example, offer a free hour to the student or parent (whoever is paying) if they refer you to another student. You can take this even further and offer a scheme to students where once they have completed four lessons with you they can earn £25 of shopping vouchers if they refer someone who also stays on for four lessons.

Get your students to think about referring by producing targeted learning resources with your contact details on. When students print and share these materials with their friends, they will know that they came from you. Students are less secretive about the fact that they have a tutor these days and may be happy to promote you to their friends.

It’s our job as tutors as an industry to say that there’s no shame in tutoring. Tutoring is an aspirational product, which is not about ‘failing’ but it’s about wanting to get more out of your education.

5. Get some testimonials

What are testimonials I hear you ask? These are case studies of students you have supported, including a summary of what you helped them with and what the outcome was. You need to include the subject they studied, the level and the result the student achieved. Don’t reveal your client’s full name or address unless they are happy for you to do so. You should include testimonials on your tutoring CV, which can be up to four pages long. You can send this to agencies even if it’s not requested.

Use Trustpilot for your personal website and ask for feedback on results day when students get their grades. It can be useful to promote your testimonials every month on social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. This will help you stand out from the crowd by offering social proof that you are good at what you do and can lead to referrals. Having difficulty getting testimonials? Keep asking. It can take as many as six emails but it’s worth it because they are powerful.

Testimonials are not only good for your marketing, they are also great for you personally because they remind you that you are doing an excellent job.

6. Join The Tutors’ Association

Each time a student pays a bill they’ll be invited to leave a rating or review – you’ll also accumulate the associated tutoring hours to better indicate your experience to the public.

The only fees you’ll pay are PayPal’s payment transaction fees, which vary by country (see the examples below).

Worked example – Australia

You set your rate at $40/hour, and bill a student for 4 hours of tutoring:

    Subtotal you charge = $160
  • + Tutorly’s service fee (5%) = $8
  • Total student pays = $168
  • Less:
  • PayPal commission (2.6%) = -$4.37
  • PayPal transaction charge = -$0.30
  • Tutorly’s service fee = -$8 Total you receive = $155.33 (effectively $38.83/hour)

Worked example – New Zealand

You set your rate at $40/hour, and bill a student for 4 hours of tutoring:

    Subtotal you charge = $160
  • + Tutorly’s service fee (5%) = $8
  • Total student pays = $168
  • Less:
  • PayPal commission (3.4%) = -$5.71
  • PayPal transaction charge = -$0.45
  • Tutorly’s service fee = -$8 Total you receive = $153.84 (effectively $38.46/hour)

Depending on your country, PayPal may also charge a withdrawal fee on withdrawals from your PayPal balance to your bank account. In Australia, PayPal does not charge a withdrawal fee. In New Zealand, PayPal charges a withdrawal fee of $1 for withdrawals less than $150 (free if $150 or more is withdrawn).

Do I need a background check?

If you want to tutor children, be aware that in some states/countries a background check is compulsory. For example, background checks are compulsory in Australia (e.g. see ‘Working with Children Check’, Victoria). In New Zealand, a background check is not compulsory (see Ministry of Justice, New Zealand).

Check with your local authority as to whether or not you require a background check, and be sure to view our safety recommendations.

I want to tutor in Australia – do I need an ABN?

As you’ll be self-employed, it’s recommended that you obtain an Australian Business Number (ABN). If you don’t have one, it’s free to apply for an ABN online at the Australian Business Register – to help you out, we’ve put together an ABN application guide. How to Advertise Your Tutoring Services on Craigslist

Craigslist is awesome because you can advertise for free and your ad will have little competition on the page. I rarely see more than 5-10 ads for tutors on craigslist for each day. Here are some guidelines you can follow to write a great craigslist ad.

1. Stick to advertising one subject in your ad. A common misconception is that you can get more clients by appealing to a more general population. If there are other subjects you’d like to tutor, make just make separate posts for them. Why? Think about it, if you were looking for a Trigonometry tutor would you click on the post titled “MATH TUTOR” (I got the previous example directly from craigslist) or “Experienced Trigonometry Tutor”? By advertising one specific subject you can appeal specifically to the clients you want to attract. By appealing to everyone you appeal to no one.

2. Be descriptive in your title and location fields. Be descriptive in your title; include the subject you’ve selected to tutor in as well as whatever adjective describes you best whether it be ‘experienced’, ‘college grad’, ‘certified teacher’, etc. In your location field make sure to tell your location as well as a note stating you’re willing to travel (if you’re willing to travel).

3. Clearly and concisely state your experience, qualifications, and why you should be hired. You want to have the least amount of text possible while avoiding crappy posts such as: “im in college. chem major. email if interested.” After briefly stating your qualifications and experience, tell your prospects in why you should be hired. Make sure that you focus on a quantitative benefit. For example, “I have the knowledge and experience to tutor any student!” is something you want to avoid. If I’m looking for a tutor then it’s a given that they should have knowledge and at least some tutoring experience. Instead, use something like: “75% of my students have increased their World History scores by a full letter grade within just one month!” The most important thing is to be honest. Don’t promise anything you can’t deliver.

4. Provide as many ways to be contacted as you can. I personally provide my email, Facebook profile, LinkedIn profile, Twitter account, and cell number (making sure to tell potential clients to call or text me anytime). When I make posts for RocTutor, I also include a link to Facebook, Twitter, and the website. Your prospects will all have different preferred modes of communication and you want to be easily accessible by whatever means they prefer. Make sure you check your voice mail greeting and would be okay with customers hearing it.

5. Price to value. Do not under any circumstances try to advertise your services lower than your competitors. Getting into a price war is a race to the bottom. Instead, go above and beyond expectations and work hard to prove that you’re worth the price you ask for. I started charging $15/hr and then steadily increased my rates to $30/hr once I began getting more clients than I could handle. If you’re good, the news will spread, and then you can start increasing your rates.

6. If you already have clients, ask them if they’d be willing to be references for new clients. In my experience, my clients have been happy to help me out by volunteering as a reference for me. If you give them your best work they will feel obliged to help you in return. Including references can help to win over skeptical first-time customers and they also let potential clients know that you’ve been successful tutoring in the past.
