Have you ever noticed how some people seem to just get things done? They don’t need “productivity hacks” or GTD and procrastination is a foreign word to them. These people have a reliable work ethic.

A work ethic is a set of values based on the ideals of hard work and discipline. Building a reliable work ethic means training yourself to follow these values. Training yourself so that work becomes automatic instead of a struggle.

A work ethic is based on habits. Persistence, focus, “do it now,” and “do it right” are the key habits in building a dependable work ethic. Here are some steps for building those habits:

Forming the Persistence Habit

The first part of a reliable work ethic is persistence. If you quickly burn out after only a short period of work or you can’t stay focused on a task for long, you lack persistence. Building persistence is like building endurance for a race, slowly training yourself to work harder for longer periods of time.

Persistence should always be balanced with periods of rest. Working twelve hours straight won’t usually be the most effective strategy even if your work ethic is strong. But training yourself to work longer can help you if you need to and it makes working shorter periods of time easier.

Here are some tips:

Measure Yourself – Figure out how long you can work effectively. Measure how long it takes before you slow down or give up. Measurement can be a source for improvement.

Run a Burnout Day – Try working longer for one day, following it with a lighter day afterwards. By stretching your focus for longer periods once in a while you can boost your persistence for normal days.

Do an Extra 20% – When you feel like quitting, go an extra 20%. If you’ve been working intensely for three hours but are feeling the desire to stop, try another forty minutes before taking a break.

Forming the Focus Habit

Even more critical than persistence is focus. A car going 70 mph for one hour will go further than a car going 10 mph for six. Focusing all your energies for even a short period of time can be tiring, but combined with persistence it is a powerful ability to have.

Here are some tips for forming the focus habit:

Timebox – Give yourself 60-90 minutes to work on a particular task. During that time you can’t rest or engage in any distractions.

Accelerate – It can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes to build up a concentrated focus. Give yourself time to accelerate into a focused state.

Cut Distractions – Practice the habit of turning off all outside noise. Phones, e-mail, RSS, Twitter and visitors should be shut out while trying to focus.

Forming the “Do It Now” Habit

Don’t let yourself procrastinate. Having a strong work ethic means having the phrase “do it now” as a constant hum in the background. Time for leisure is fine, but if you are trying to work make sure the only thing you are doing is work. Don’t let yourself procrastinate when you still have an unfinished to-do list.

Do it Now for 30 Days – Kill the procrastination bug for good. For the next thirty days define periods of your day you want to devote to work or personal projects. During those periods of time, remind yourself of the “do it now” phrase and get working whenever you feel the urge to procrastinate.

Forming the “Do it Right” Habit

The final aspect of getting things done is doing them properly. Sloppy work, hastily finishing things or spending too little time working out details leads to poor quality. If you aren’t going to do something properly, it’s probably not a good idea to do it at all.

Perfectionism isn’t necessary for many tasks, but most things require a minimum standard of quality. Writing code without useful variable names or documentation. Graphics with merged layers. Articles filled with spelling and grammatical errors. The “do it right” habit means actively slowing yourself down slightly to fix problems before they occur.

Here are some tips:

Separate Creation and Criticism – Ideas require mess. Solving a programming problem or writing an article often requires that you first let go of your need for perfection. But once you’ve finished the idea, you should separate a specific time for clean-up afterwards.

Measure Twice, Cut Once – For tasks that don’t have an Undo feature, take extra care in doing them properly the first time.

Set Two Deadlines – Avoid analysis paralysis by setting two deadlines. One to complete the task, and another to review and polish the work. With two deadlines you won’t stumble into the trap of perfectionism, but you won’t hastily finish something that isn’t ready.

Sit on It – If you’ve hit a milestone in a task or project, take a few minutes to work on something else. When you come back you can use a fresh perspective to tweak problems.

Using the Habits

What’s the point of building a work ethic in the first place? I can’t comment on your job, but if you don’t feel a natural desire to get more done and work harder, you are probably in the wrong line of work. Doing the absolute minimum and laziness might seem like an ideal solution if your working at a job you hate. But if you are involved in a job or personal project you love, having a work ethic means you get to create, accomplish and provide even more.

Having a positive attitude towards your work will help in liking the job as well as building confidence. Maintain a friendly approach at work, give a smile to your colleagues and remain positive and confident throughout the day. It will help in increasing productivity as well.

E valuate your work and work on feedback

You must be capable of judging your own performance at work and plan accordingly to improve it. One should positively accept the feedback provided by the higher authorities and work towards improving that areas. Make sure you improve everyday and go beyond delivery above-average performance daily.

In the case of experienced workers, it doesn’t matter how good you think you are at your job, you need to be ready to adapt to change at a moment’s notice. When you’ve been at a job for a long time, it’s easy to get stuck in your old ways. But, not only is that bad for career growth, but it comes across as cocky and stubborn when job expectations begin to change.

Take Control Of Your Career

There are still many in the workforce that have this outdated notion that their employer is responsible for coaching them and helping them advance their career. But the fact is that as soon as an employee starts a new job, it’s up to that employee to be the driving force behind learning that job, and eventually advancing in it.

The whole reason that you were hired was because of your ability to provide a service, and the responsibility is on you to provide that service. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t ask your boss or supervisor for guidance or advice. It’s just that you should be doing it as you’re taking initiative, not sitting around at your desk waiting for help or feedback.

The same goes for career planning. You should always seek out opportunities to grow your career, and make suggestions on how you can grow at your position and at your workplace. If you go to your boss with a good plan that will ultimately make the company more efficient, and profitable, you’ll get their support.

While it’s important to do everything you need to do to get your own career on track, it’s also important to share your knowledge and experience with others. Taking time to mentor or help a co-worker shows a great deal of leadership.

By taking the time to lead by example, you become an important resource for your co-workers and may someday put yourself in position for a promotion.

Honesty and Integrity

“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters” ― Albert Einstein.

This quote from Einstein is very true. It is always best to tell the truth than to be caught in a lie. Once you are known as someone whose word cannot be trusted it is very difficult to overcome. Employers value employees who maintain a sense of honesty and integrity. Good relationships are built on trust. Employers want to know that they can trust what you say and what you do.


Reliability goes hand in hand with a good work ethic. If individuals with a good work ethic say they are going to attend a work function or arrive at a certain time, they do, since they value punctuality.

Individuals with a strong work ethic often want to appear dependable, showing their employers that they are workers to whom they can turn.

Positive Attitude

Employers seek employees who take the initiative and have the motivation to get the job done in a reasonable period of time. A positive attitude gets the work done and motivates others to do the same without dwelling on the challenges that inevitably come up in any job.

It is the enthusiastic employee who creates an environment of good will and who provides a positive role model for others. A positive attitude is something that is most valued by supervisors and co-workers and that also makes the job more pleasant and fun to go to each day.

No employer or co-worker wants to work with someone who is constantly draining the energy in the office with negative thoughts or comments.

With all the completion for jobs, having a solid work ethic is what can help you get to the top of this list for job opportunities and promotions. Work ethic should be learned and practiced before one gets the first job out of higher education. This will make their lives easier when it comes to securing a job and avoiding the layoff list.

Employees with a great work ethic are worth their weight in gold.

2020 was up there with the greatest crises in HR history. Amidst the challenges, though, there’s been something positive—we learned a lot about the drive and resilience of our employees. The ones who kept produced great work rather than excuses, no matter the challenges they faced—and even when their organizations moved remote-first.

We often talk about hiring “top talent”, but have you ever considered that it’s the people who show up every day and reliably get things done that are the real drivers of business success? That’s why we thought it was worth taking just a moment to celebrate and give a little definition to a humble and often overlooked quality: work ethic.

    Whoever said “90% of success is showing up,” had a point. Employee tardiness takes a toll on productivity; it costs the U.S. economy billions annually, according to SHRM. But consistent lateness also signals a lack of commitment, which can be a killer for workplace morale. Even among the chronically late, though, tardiness doesn’t always mean laziness—some people just perceive time differently, according to research from San Diego State University. (To make life easier for everyone, it’s good HR practice to set out a timekeeping policy outlining your expectations of employees, while enabling punctuality with thoughtful scheduling and regular shift reminders.)

It’s never been harder to find your focus than this year. Given that it can take over 20 minutes to regain your full attention after responding to just one email, according to a UC Irvine study, a focused mindset is an essential part of a good work ethic. Hiring (and rewarding) highly focused employees isn’t enough though—managers must also put in place structures that facilitate focused work. This could mean refraining from unnecessary communication while an employee is completing a task or offering easily-distracted staff the opportunity to work from home.

Focus for one day and you’re on the right track. Keep that focus up over the course of weeks or months and you’re really onto something. The people who can perform day in and day out, who have a habit of success, are your real super stars. The problem is, self-discipline and resilience in the face of obstacles only goes so far. The magic ingredient is engagement. When employees are engaged by their work—and that usually means when they feel a sense of ownership and control over what they do—there’s no stopping them.

Professionalism isn’t about taking yourself seriously—it’s about taking the work seriously. Think of the people on your team who follow through on promises, own up to mistakes and have a way of staying positive in the face of adversity. A professional does their job to the best of their ability, expects the same of their colleagues, and effortlessly raises everyone’s standards.

A Desire to Improve
Stagnation is not a pleasant feeling—in life or your career. The best employees will prevent this by seeking to always improve themselves. If this desire isn’t noticeable at the interview stage, hiring managers should stay well clear. No matter how accomplished an employee seems, without a desire to improve, sooner or later they’ll be left behind.

Finding employees with a growth mindset is not enough, though—managers must encourage it and, more importantly, facilitate their employees’ learning processes. While an important part of management is laying out clear expectations, employees must also be able to act on their own initiative.     Results are the name of the game. At the end of the day, possessing all talent and potential in the world means nothing if you aren’t able to produce anything to show for it. Preference should always be given to candidates who have a record of actually producing quality work—and hiring managers must fight the urge to believe the big words of those with more talent but less to show for it. Candidates with a good work ethic find a way to get the job done, no matter the challenge, no matter how they are feeling that day. (As ever, though, raising employee engagement doesn’t hurt—in fact it can raise employee productivity by 21%, according to Gallup).

    If all the good work ethic characteristics align in one candidate, a hiring manager can be confident that they will find a way to succeed—no matter their talent level. Yet even with a good work ethic traits, staff need to be engaged and encourage. It’s the job of HR to not only seek but to facilitate and nurture these traits.     2. Get To Work On Time

    OK, this may sound silly, but sometimes it’s definitely something people struggle with. Whether it’s that traffic or their beauty regime takes longer than it should, there’s always someone that always seems to be walking into the office five or 10 minutes late every day. Maybe this is you, maybe it isn’t. The fact of the matter is that when you are late and stressing out because you are late, it really rocks the rest of your day. If you are more punctual with your time, you will be more punctual with your work and those deadlines will mean nothing to do because you are finishing them early like a boss.

    3. Set A Standard For Yourself

    Sometimes we are our own worst critics. Instead of letting things to get our heads, why not just set a standard of excellence for ourselves? It may be hard not to follow a lazy coworkers lead, but don’t be influenced by others if you know you can do better. I know that I am a hard worker, and when I complete the goals that I have set up, I feel better about myself and strong about how I work. For you to produce good work, you have to hold yourself to a higher standard; no one else is going to do that for you. Remember you are your own #GIRLBOSS. It’s a great way to motivate yourself and possibly your coworkers as well.

    4. Don’t Let The Mistakes Trip You Up

    It’s natural that one can mess up on their work. Your boss might have given you constructive criticism on a project you completed, or maybe you didn’t get the praise you were hoping for. Either way, don’t let the little negatives of your work day push on how you truly feel about your work ethic. If you feel a situation is really bothering you, try to turn it into a positive.

    According to Scott W. Ventrella, author of The Power of Positive Thinking In Business, “These so-called “little negatives” clutter up the average person’s conversation, and while each one is seemingly unimportant in itself, the total effect of these attitudes is to condition the mind negatively.” Ultimately, we don’t want these little negatives to get in the way of our work. They are merely a distraction and will only hurt your performance if you continue to think about them.

    5. Be Dedicated

    This will have to be one of the most important ones. If you are dependable and dedicated to your work and your co-workers, they will feel that they can go to you with any work issue. According to Jacqueline Whitmore who is a business etiquette expert in an Entrepreneur article, “You aim for “outstanding” in everything you do. You put in the extra hours to get things right, giving attention to detail and devotion to excellence.” To be dedicated simply means that you are a hard worker and you understand what you need to do to get the job done right.

    6. Have The Right Mentality

    You won’t get anywhere in the world by cutting corners. You have to change your mentality. For me personally, I saw the corporate world a little differently when I read Jimmy Fallon’s interview with Billboard Magazine (it sounds silly, but bare with me). There was one line that he said that really turned things around for me in terms of my perspective on work.

    While talking about how Justin Bieber cancelled a skit last minute and this is how he dealt with it Fallon said, “. He’s here to sing, so as long as he’s comfortable and it sounds good then we did our job. And if I talk to him and make him funny and make him look good, that’s my job. That’s all I have to do.” The way Jimmy’s mentality dealt with the day of cancellation really made me realize that in the corporate world, everything is not going to go smoothly and it really depends on how to pick up the broken pieces that will make you a stronger work and individual.

    When it comes to work, it can be hard to not let the everyday stress bottle up inside of you. Try to have a positive mind about the work you want to produce and always set goals for yourself. You are the conductor of your train and if you love what you are doing, everything will work out in the end. Just try to make yourself proud — it’s really the best medicine.

    4. Offer training: If you provide on the job training or professional development courses to your staff, this can grow their confidence and skill set. The result? More productive employees fresh from their empowering training.
    5. Refine your recruitment strategy: You can look for problematic job candidates to ensure you don’t hire employees with poor work ethic. Securing job references from former employees is one option—this will help you understand more about their approach with day-to-day work.

    As a business, you can also look to set the standard for your employees. Not just with your managers, but higher management as well right to the CEO.

    You can do this in various ways. Measuring your ethics against other businesses is a good start. Look to a business you admire and the standards it sets—cherry pick the elements you want to see in your business, adapt them, and put them into practice.

    It’s difficult to judge yourself against others. You need bravery to take an honest look at your infrastructure.

    We would count John’s ethical fallacies if we had time. How do we instruct our children to swim upstream against a slacker culture? Here are the 10 ways to teach your children a great work ethic.

    1. Understand the fact that you always teach, regardless of intention.

    The question isn’t “if” you are teaching but “what” you are teaching. It’s important to understand that home is a natural and continuous learning environment. Everything we do instructs our children. What are your children learning about work by observing you?

    2. Example, example, example.

    If parents own a positive work ethic, then we’re already halfway there. This is a great opportunity for “do as I do” to support “do as I say.”

    3. Balance is job one.

    A work ethic that sacrifices family turns out to be all work and no ethic. Every family has its own take on how much work is too much. But it’s essential that we teach our children balance in terms of work. In his book Quiet Strength, Coach Tony Dungy shares how he deliberately taught his coaching staff and players that family time was their priority.     4. Keep family priorities in order.

    The simple phrase “fun after the work is done” associates relaxation with completion rather than relaxation as escape. People experience more satisfaction in their leisure when it is preceded by a satisfactory job performance.

    How is a guide different from a boss? A boss typically barks out orders and waits for results, whereas a guide is willing to walk alongside. As dads who have to teach our kids a work ethic, our role is that of guide.

    6. Take your children with you when you volunteer.

    Pick up garbage together on the side of the street. Join a team that fixes things at the park. Hook up with volunteer efforts at church or other community organizations. Work associated with service is a key building block to the value of work across the board.

    7. Expose them to stories about heroes who learned the value of work.

    There are hundreds of great stories to reinforce this point. Movies, books, articles. Read them together and then live them, day by day.

    8. Make chores at home a shared responsibility.

    Every member of the family should have assigned chores on a routine basis. Change them around; help each other out; take turns with the ones no one really enjoys. Don’t wimp out on the chores, and don’t let your kids wimp out, either.

    9. Don’t pay kids for routine chores.

    Compliment. Encourage. Throw in the occasional treat, “because you kids have been so responsible this week!” Admire their good work, but don’t pay them for fulfilling their responsibilities. However, do consider paying your children for jobs that go above and beyond their normal chores. It’s a wonderful way for them to learn the value of a buck.

    10. Have a “chore chart” on the refrigerator.

    When you build a strong work ethic, hard work is no longer hard.

    Rather, it becomes effortless. I’m not a big fan of the word, “hard work” because it presupposes that work has to be hard. This isn’t true. Work can be challenging at the beginning. However, in the end, your success depends on which type of motivation mindset you adopt.

    Push motivation is a behavior that you force yourself to complete to achieve a goal. Eventually, you will burn out if you push yourself too hard. Conversely, pull motivation is a behavior that you feel naturally drawn towards. When you can link pleasure to an experience, you will be more likely to reward yourself, and in turn, repeat a behavior.

    The question is, “How do you develop an INSANE work ethic?”

    Just like anything, it’s a habit that you need to build. I like to think of work ethic as if it were a muscle. Let’s use the metaphor of going to the gym to illustrate my point. When you are first going to the gym, it’s hard to be build muscle, especially if you don’t love working out.

    Hence, it requires a lot of discipline. However, if you consistently stick with it, eventually it becomes easier to go to the gym. Before you know it, your day doesn’t feel complete without this healthy habit. Can you relate?

    The same thing goes with developing your work ethic.

    When you go to your job each day, you’re either building character traits of strength and hard work, or you’re cheating yourself. If you aren’t going to go all-in in your work, then all that you are doing is building a disempowering habit of laziness. How you do anything is how you do everything.

    If you’re not showing up at work, then who is to say that you are going to show up in other areas of your life as well? You have to push yourself to go beyond what your normal level of work ethic is to something that is greater than yourself. There are different levels of hard work.

    You may think that you currently work hard. However, it’s not until you’re around someone that is living life at a higher level than you, that you get hit with the reality that you’re lagging. If you haven’t achieved your goals and dreams yet, it’s time for you to get in closer proximity with people who are more successful than you. This is what will make you realize that you need to raise your standards higher than ever before.

    So… how do you develop your work ethic muscle?

    In her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, Angela Duckworth talks about “the hard thing rule.” She says that you should do something hard every single day. The goal is to push yourself beyond what you are used to. Just by setting this tone for yourself, you will slowly build your work ethic muscle.

    Look at everything that you’re currently doing in your life as an opportunity to challenge yourself. When I was first building my online business, I wanted to achieve success so badly that I was willing to do anything. I trained myself to work 14-16 hour days.

    By adopting this INSANE work ethic, my 8-hour days are now so much easier because I have built up my strength over time by pushing my limits. If you’ve never worked a 14-16 hour day, you should. Challenge yourself beyond what you are capable of, on purpose. The results will speak for themselves.
