How to check your macbook’s battery health

Learn how to determine the number of cycles your Mac notebook’s battery has.

About battery cycles

When you use your Mac notebook, its battery goes through charge cycles. A charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery’s power—but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge.

For example, you could use half of your notebook’s charge in one day, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two. In this way, it might take several days to complete a cycle.

Batteries have a limited amount of charge cycles before their performance is expected to diminish. Once the cycle count is reached, a replacement battery is recommended to maintain performance. You can use your battery after it reaches its maximum cycle count, but you might notice a reduction in your battery life.

Knowing how many charge cycles your battery has and how many are left can help you determine when a battery replacement is required. Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. For best performance, replace your battery when you reach its maximum cycle count.

Follow these steps to access information about your Mac notebook battery, including its cycle count:

  1. Hold the Option key and click the Apple  menu. Choose System Information.
  2. Under the Hardware section of the System Information window, select Power. The current cycle count is listed under the Battery Information section.

How long does your Macbook battery last?

Most of Apple’s newer notebooks can go through 1,000 charge cycles before you need a battery replacement. To put in perspective, for example, if you use 1 cycle a day (every day, including weekends), your battery will last about 3 years. But most people do not do this. As you can see in the image above, my cycle count is 342 and I am using this computer since 2013.

Older Macbooks (mostly before 2010) offer less maximum cycle charge count, usually around 300-500.

Beyond this number, it is not expected for your battery to function anymore. If you reach this number, you should replace your battery.

Also, it is important to note that Apple offers a One Year Limited Warranty for faulty batteries.

There are some steps that you can take to maximize your battery life.

  1. Keep your Mac up to date
  2. Shut down your computer if you are not going to use it for a long time
  3. Optimize your battery life by going to Energy Saver in System Preferences, so that you use less battery life and this means less cycle.
  4. Optimize your keyboard and screen brightness by going to System Preferences > Keyboard or Displays.

If you need to replace a battery, you can do that yourself because most of them offer removable batteries, or you can reserve a Genius Bar appointment.

Get a Bit More Information with coconutBattery

System Information has most of the data you need to assess your battery’s health, but it’s not very well laid out and could provide a bit more information. For example, it tells you your battery’s current maximum capacity but not it’s original capacity. If you want a little bit more info that’s easier to understand, download the free app coconutBattery.

When you run the app, you’ll see something like the screenshot below.

As well as the cycle count, this app shows us that the battery now has a Full Charge Capacity of 7098 mAh. When it was new, it had a capacity of 8755 mAh. Losing 15% capacity over almost three years isn’t too bad at all.

If you’ve got an older MacBook, the battery almost certainly holds less charge now than it did when it was new. With either System Information or coconutBattery, you can quickly see how much capacity it’s lost and whether it needs to be replaced.

Batteries on electronic devices have a very limited period of usage capacity. Your MacBook Pro Battery life can go down gradually after a certain amount of charge cycles, and you might need to replace them. The MacBook battery cycle count can be checked within your Mac itself before they get worn out.

Mac notebook computers with an Intel processor use battery health management, a feature designed to improve the lifespan of your computer’s battery.

About the lithium-ion battery in your Mac notebook

Mac notebook batteries use lithium-ion technology. Lithium-ion batteries charge quickly, are long-lasting, and currently provide the best technology to power your computer.

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they get older—and their age isn’t determined only by time. A battery’s lifespan depends on its chemical age, which is affected by factors such as its temperature history and charging pattern. As your notebook’s battery ages chemically, its charging capacity gets smaller.

With these tips for maximizing battery performance, you can get the most out of all your Apple devices. And with battery health management, your Mac notebook can take battery optimization even further.

How battery health management helps

The battery health management feature in macOS 10.15.5 is designed to improve your battery’s lifespan by reducing the rate at which it chemically ages. The feature does this by monitoring your battery’s temperature history and its charging patterns.

Based on the measurements that it collects, battery health management may reduce your battery’s maximum charge when in this mode. This happens as needed to ensure that your battery charges to a level that’s optimized for your usage—reducing wear on the battery, and slowing its chemical aging. Battery health management also uses the measurements to calculate when your battery needs service.

While battery health management benefits your battery’s long-term lifespan, it can also reduce the amount of time your Mac runs on one battery charge when capacity limits are applied. If your priority is making your Mac notebook last as long as possible before recharging, you can turn the feature off.

When battery health management is turned on, your battery’s maximum charging capacity might be limited. Although the feature is designed to improve your battery’s lifespan, the limited maximum capacity might update your battery status menu to indicate a need for service. Your Mac calculates when to recommend service for your battery based on battery health management being continuously enabled.

How to control the battery health management feature

Battery health management is on by default when you buy a new Mac notebook with macOS 10.15.5 or later, or after you upgrade to macOS 10.15.5 or later on a Mac notebook with Thunderbolt 3 ports.

If you want to turn off battery health management on a Mac notebook with an Intel processor, follow these steps:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Battery.
  2. Click Battery in the sidebar, then click Battery Health.
  3. Deselect “Manage battery longevity”.

Batteries aren’t meant to last forever, and that includes the battery that powers your laptop. It might seem like the power source that gives life to your device should be the tech equivalent of an everlasting gobstopper, but as with any other battery, your laptop battery has a life cycle, one that ends at some point.

It’s important to keep an eye on your laptop battery’s health for that very reason: it can, and likely will, die at some point, and you don’t want to get stuck replacing it in a pinch. Plus, just because the battery has died doesn’t mean you need to buy a new laptop. Tap or click here for 5 signs it’s time for a new laptop.

Let’s take a look at how you can check the life of your laptop battery on both PCs and Mac laptops.

How and why laptop batteries die

Most laptops use lithium-ion batteries as the power source, and as a general rule, this type of battery tends to lose charging capabilities. This can cause your laptop battery, which once held a full charge of 100%, to be limited to, say, over 30% over time.

This can obviously interfere with your productivity — and also your laptop’s efficiency. Laptops are meant to be portable, but if you can’t move it from one place to the next without the battery dying, it can cause issues with how useful your device is to you.

Tech news that matters to you, daily

Privacy, security, the latest trends and the info you need to live your best digital life.

This happens because your laptop battery is only equipped to handle a limited number of full battery cycles — or, in layman’s terms, the charging process in which your battery goes from 0% to 100% — before it starts losing efficiency. If you consistently put your laptop battery through full charge cycles, it will lose efficiency, and so will older batteries as they age.

Your laptop battery can also lose efficiency if you’re partially charging it. Let’s say you regularly charge your laptop from 30% to 50%, or about 20% each time you charge it. Well, do that five times and you’ll have completed one battery cycle because you’ve charged your laptop 100% in total.

You can’t just avoid charging your battery to cut down on the cycles you put it through, though — which is why it’s important to check your battery’s health instead. Doing so will give you a good idea of how much more abuse your battery can take, and help prompt you to make some changes to preserve the battery health when you can.

But how do you do that? Let’s take a look.

How to check the battery life on your laptop

The steps you take to check your battery health will depend on which type of laptop you use. Checking on the health of your battery on a Macbook is much simpler than checking the health of your battery on a PC laptop, which involves a much more laborious process. Let’s start with the difficult one first.

How to check the battery health of your PC laptop

Option #1: Use the Windows PowerShell terminal (Windows 8 or later).

To check your battery health, you just have to use one simple command from the Windows Powershell terminal.

  • Click the Start menu on your laptop.
  • Search for PowerShell and then click on the PowerShell option that appears.
  • Once it appears, type the following command: powercfg /batteryreport.
  • Press Enter, which will generate a report that includes information on your battery health.
  • Search for the folder in your user accounts directory with the name: C:\Users[YourUsername] to access the report.
  • Note: Rather than searching for Powershell, you can opt to type “cmd” while pressing the Start button.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to run it in administrator mode.
  • While in admin mode, type powercfg /batteryreport.
  • Hit Enter.
  • Go to Users\Your Username folder and look for the battery-report.html file to access the report.

Following either set of instructions above generates a report that includes a ton of information on your laptop, including information about your battery health. This report will be an HTML file, so all you have to do is double-click it to view the contents.

You can find the information about your battery health by scrolling down on the report to the Battery Information section. This section will include subsections with information on Design Capacity, Full Charge Capacity, and Cycle Count.

It also includes a subsection called Battery Life Estimates, which will give you a clearer picture of how long your laptop battery will last now on a full charge, along with information on how long it would last on a full charge when it was new. This information should help you better understand where your battery is in its life cycle.

Option #2: Use Battery Report, which allows you to see your battery health (best for older laptops)

  • Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu.
  • Choose Command Prompt (Admin). (Note: This opens Command Prompt as an administrator, which allows you to run a battery report for your laptop).
  • When Command Prompt opens, type in the same command you use for Windows PowerShell: powercfg /batteryreport and run the report.

This will do the same thing as the Windows PowerShell method does: it will generate a report that includes information on your battery health, which can be found by searching in your accounts directory for a folder called C:\Users[YourUsername].

As with the PowerShell method, this report will show you information about your battery, along with the name, serial number, and chemistry type of the battery.

How to check the battery health for your Mac laptop

It’s surprisingly simple to check the health of your Macbook battery, especially when compared to checking the battery health on a PC laptop. To check the health of your battery on a Macbook:

  • Hold the Option key and click on the Apple menu.
  • Click on System Information.
  • Scroll down to Hardware > Power > Cycle Count.

How to check your macbook’s battery health

The “Cycle Count” section will give you a firm number of times your laptop battery has completed the battery cycle, and you can use this number to better understand where your Macbook battery is in its life cycle. You’ll also find information on what the full charge capacity is, the charge remaining, and a ton of other information about your battery, including the serial number.

This information is important because the battery cycles will vary with each model of the Macbook. As you can see on the screenshot above, the Macbook this was written on has a cycle count of 253, which may seem high, but it’s a Macbook Pro, and Macbook Pros released from 2009 and later have 1,000 cycles on their batteries. So, this Macbook is about a third of the way into the full battery life cycle.

If your MacBook’s battery life seems to be getting shorter and shorter, it might be time to check your MacBook’s battery health. All MacBooks ship with batteries that are designed to last for years, but depending on how you typically recharge your MacBook’s battery, the battery’s capacity can be reduced early leading to shorter battery life. Checking your MacBook’s battery health can help you keep an eye on things and make sure your MacBook’s battery isn’t defective.
