Even if you do not find the idea of seeing a Compass in Apple Maps useful, you might be interested in knowing the steps to enable the Compass in Apple Maps for educational and recreational use.

Before enabling the Compass, you need to be aware that the accuracy of the Compass in Apple Maps can be influenced by magnetic interferences in your surroundings and also by Magnets in AirPods and other devices in your surroundings.

Enable Compass in Apple Maps On iPhone or iPad

Follow the steps below to show the Compass in Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad.

1. Open the Settings App on your iPhone.

2. On the Settings screen, scroll down and tap on Maps .

3. On the Maps screen, tap on the Driving & Navigation option.

4. On the Driving & Navigation screen, enable the option for Compass by moving the toggle to ON position (See image below).

Even after enabling the Compass in Apple Maps, you won’t be able to see the Compass in Apple Maps. You will need to follow the steps below to show the Compass in Apple Maps.

1. Open the Apple Maps App on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Next, tap on the Location Arrow to activate the Compass and then tap another time to Display the Compass within the Maps App on your iPhone.

To put this in simple terms, tap twice on the Location Arrow to display or view the Compass in Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad.

True North or Magnetic North?

The Compass in Apple Maps on your iPhone can be configured to show both True North and Magnetic North directions.

True North: is also referred to as the Geodetic North and it points directions along the Earth’s surface towards the Geographic North Pole.

Magnetic North: Points directions towards the Magnetic North Pole on your iPhone’s Compass. Magnetic North Pole can be defined as a point in the Northern Hemisphere at which Earth’s Magnetic Field points vertically downwards.

You may also be interested in knowing that True North differs a bit (few Arc seconds) from Astronomical True North due to the local gravity not always pointing to the exact rotational axis of the Earth.

In case all this sounds complicated, you can just remember that it is recommended to set your iPhone to use the True North and Not Magnetic North.

Follow the steps below to make the Compass use True North Directions in Apple Maps on your iPhone

1. Open the Settings App on your iPhone

2. On the Settings screen, tap on Compass .

3. On the next screen, enable the option for Use True North by moving the toggle to ON position.

Note: Disabling the setting for “Use True North” will make your iPhone use the Magnetic North.

Although, it is recommended to use the True North Setting on your iPhone, the GPS on your iPhone will still be as accurate even if you decide to use Magnetic North.
