Although stuffing envelopes can earn you extra income, you’ll want to avoid envelope stuffing scams. These scams abound, especially on the internet. Here are some signs of a scam operation [source: Avoiding Envelope Stuffing Scams]:

    • The ad promises instant success and high income. In reality, stuffing envelopes is tedious and doesn’t earn too much.
    • The ad states that you have to invest money to “register” or receive a “starter kit.” Often the kit never arrives.
    • The company requests your credit card or bank account number.

So how do you find a legitimate envelope-stuffing job? You have two options:

    • Apply for a job at a business that does a lot of mailing, like print shops, large businesses and major retail chains.
    • Start your own direct mail service.

If you opt to start a direct mail service, you’ll work with one or more clients. Here are some pointers for starting your own business [source: Direct Mail Service]:

    • Decide how you want to advertise. Some options include personal visits or phone calls to potential clients, placing ads in local papers, distributing brochures, etc. It’s a good idea to make business cards.
    • Be patient. It takes time to build a clientele and a good reputation.
    • Familiarize yourself with each client’s needs.
    • Buy any necessary equipment and supplies (e.g. envelopes, labels, label maker, etc.). Don’t ask the client to provide anything other than the mailings and address lists.
    • Create a separate database for each client on your computer. Keep this database up to date. It helps to have a good word processor and a database and/or spreadsheet program.
    • Keep your client base at a manageable level. Remember, you’ll have to meet each client’s timetable and deadlines, so don’t take on more than you can handle.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Chances are you have been looking all over Google for a legitimate work from home job and you stumbled upon an ad that promises you to earn hundreds of dollars per week stuffing envelopes?

But it looked too good to be true and that’s why you’re here wondering if stuffing envelopes is a scam work from home job or not?

I love digging and learning about different ways to work from home, It’s just my passion that’s why I have this blog where I help people avoid scams and find legitimate work from home jobs!

That’s exactly what I’m going to do here with the stuffing envelopes schemes!

Without wasting time let’s find out what stuffing envelopes works!

    What is stuffing envelopes?

Stuffing Envelopes simply means you open up an envelope put a letter or a card inside it and lick it. That’s pretty much what it means to stuff envelopes.

As you can see stuffing envelopes does not require any experience, no degrees, in fact, there are machines that will stuff 1000’s envelopes in 20 seconds.

So why would anyone hire you and pay you $1000’s when they could buy a $500 machine and do all the stuffing envelopes work for them?

Is Stuffing Envelopes a Real Job?

Stuffing envelopes used to be a real job in the past, I’m talking about the times where there was no internet or technology. Now it’s not even a job and VIRTUALLY no one is going to pay you to do it from home.

In the past, you could work in the US Postal Service and stuff envelopes because there were no machines to automate the process for them.

Nowadays while there are companies that might pay you to stuff envelopes they are pretty hard to find and if you have happened to find a legit job you better believe they pay is peanuts.

With the evolution of the internet & technology more people buy stuff on the internet, so for example if you see an ad in your mailbox advertising a product I’m pretty sure you’re not going to even look at it.

What about when you see a product advertised on the internet or on Amazon you would buy it right? Well, that’s the point.

Sending mails is not an effective marketing strategy anymore and many companies are moving to the internet!

Can You Get Paid to Fill Envelopes at Home?

There is absolutely no way to get paid to stuff envelopes from home, anyone promising you that you will earn money from home stuffing envelopes is a scam artist you should run away from!

But howstuffworks.com say that there are ONLY two ways to work from home stuffing envelopes which are:

    1. Apply for a job or business that does a lot of mailing like a printing shop.
    2. Start your own direct mailing service.

    Legitimate Stuffing Envelopes Jobs

There are some jobs online that include stuffing envelopes but I’m talking about companies that are looking for office administrators or an executive assistant.

This job require some specific degrees and special requirements such as good eye coordination & multi-tasking.

Jobs like these pay you to:

    • Assist with preparation of mailing material.
    • Preparing labels.
    • Typing & copying.
    • Sending out mailers.
    • Moving & stacking boxes.

You can find such jobs on websites like:

So Is Stuffing Envelopes a Scam?

Stuffing Envelopes is not a scam , it’s a real job that people used to pay you for, but as noted above it’s impossible to get paid to stuff envelopes from home! Because there are machines that do better, faster & cheaper!

However what you should know is that there are THOUSANDS of stuffing envelopes scams that are waiting for innocent people looking for work from home jobs.

Below I explain to you how these stuffing envelopes scams work and even show you examples of scams.

Legit Work from Home Job with No Start-up Fee?

The earn money at home folding or stuffing envelopes goes way back, but, if you ask me, there is not such a thing as free legitimate stuffing envelope jobs. By self-experience, I will tell you why! Along the years many of us have seen the folding envelopes recruiting ads on newspapers, flyers and lately on the internet, the problem is, are those legit? Like in everything we can’t tell 100% sure, might be some “good guys” out there but most of them are pure scams.

Traits of the victims, the ambitious

There is two distinct type of victims and scammers on this scheme. The first type of victim is a naive but ambitious type of fella, probably a college or early university student trying to make some money on the side.

Most of the times this type of victim never had a job, and the money they have is what saved from monthly allowances. This sort of victim will fit on the type of scammer that asks for money on the add itself. Yes, there are some scammers that ask around 50 bucks on the add claiming it’s for an administrative and/or logistic initial fee. People send them the money and wait for the 1st package to arrive, guess what? They just got ripped off and no package will ever arrive.

    The ones in need

The second type of victim is usually a person in a bad economic situation. Probably a long-term unemployed or a retired person desperate to get their hands on some fresh money. These fall for the type of scam that promises a very good revenue per stuffed envelopes packs. They only ask for information like name, address, mail or phone number.

These scammers will make themselves important and often don’t even reply to the victims for some time. At this stage they act like they are busy. At some point, they will contact the victim saying they were selected for the job.

Next step is to pay an initial fee for shipment costs and a special envelope folding machine to keep up with a certain daily production. Thing is, they say this in such a natural way, and like if they didn’t even need anyone that people quite often fell for it. Obviously, no one will get nothing but a blow on the monthly budget.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Now think with me, this kind of makes sense, like if someone is willing to pay others to fold envelopes, investing in ads promoting “free legitimate stuffing envelope jobs” for all these years, its because there is a massive market demand and they profit even paying us!

But in another hand, hey i see this add for almost for 30 years now, if this was profitable business im pretty sure some specialized companies would have appeared in the market with gigantic folding machines delivering mass production for those in need. If that didn’t happen, imagine why…

Why are Free Legitimate Stuffing Envelope Jobs a scam?

Because there are illuminated people trying to get rich by ripping others off. Their idea is to lure those in need of money to their shady schemes with promises of high gains for few hours of work. Then, when you least expect, you get cornered and instead of getting better, you end up being ripped off from the last money you have on your “purse”

I never get tired of saying this, be very careful when you find a make money from home opportunity that kask you money upfront. Anyone that runs a legit program or business to make money from home, will never ask you money upfront.

    [et_bloom_inline optin_id=”optin_8″]

You will have the opportunity to see and try by yourself if that program suits your expectations. Legitimate programs know a certain % of people stay after the trial, mainly because they believe in the quality of the product they are selling/promoting. All they want from you is you to try out their product.

If you looking to a legitimate way to make money from home, forget the free legitimate stuffing envelope jobs and check out my #1 online job on my Top 5 Work Home Jobs list, its free to join and gives you a lot of valued products if you decide to stay after the 7 day free trial! Another very important thing is that no payment or credit card information is required. Basically, the way all programs should be.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

The internet is booming day by day, there are almost 4 Billion users by now… We live in an era where anyone who wants to invest time and take action is able to make money online!… Want to hop in?!

I am sure you might have often seen ads in the weekly papers about work from home jobs in stuffing envelopes and make $1000 a month.

I am often intrigued by this whole advertisement and the sheer length of time that they have continued to woo potential participants.

The question is how does this entire working from home envelope stuffing really work?

Most importantly, is it legitimate at all?

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing EnvelopesThe point is why anyone would pay you that kind of money for stuffing envelopes in a day and era where computer and emails have pretty much taken over the communication world?

Why Do I Doubt Legit Work from Home Job Stuffing Envelopes?

There are many reasons why I feel that the work from home job of stuffing envelope is simply too good to be true and borders more towards the side of a potential scam in terms of its authenticity overall.

    The Rationale of Investment Weak

The first reason that the working from home envelope stuffing raises my doubt is because of the claim of the potential money involved in this transaction.

The fact is for earning $1000 a month, how many envelopes a month would you have to stuff and most importantly where would all these envelopes be going.

Let’s face it, when people can easily distribute flyers, pamphlets, why would they want to distribute mailers stuffed in a proper envelope.

Marketing is all about getting maximum exposure with the minimum expense involved.

Today, you can email flyers or even whatsapp them, so why would anyone want to actually pay money, invest in postage stamps and then send these mailers.

What kind of information would be there in these envelopes to deserve that kind of expenses?

    Cost Involved

Postage stamps and envelopes are really expensive these days.

No one gets envelopes and stamps free unless these are self addressed.

The point is why anyone would send you self address envelopes with postage stamps.

This is a rather remote concept and seems so out of sync in today’s world.

After all, the primary motive of any business and its marketing initiative is reducing expenses and assuming these are meant for marketing.

You can get a lot better impact by creating a Facebook page for almost zero cost and sending invites to a host of contacts.

    Start-up Kit

It is a myth that you will require no fee to start.

Most times they camouflage the fees as the cost of a start-up kit to help you understand the dynamics of work from home stuffing envelopes.

Well, you might be at home for whatever reason, but the fact is at no point of time, would you be so dumb that you won’t be able to understand how to stuff an envelope.

That is basic, and almost anyone can tell you how to start stuffing envelope.

The fact is anyone who is able to read their name would be able to stuff an envelope.

    Spreading Misinformation

Most times, you would hear people talking a lot about work from home stuffing envelopes before they start but once they get on with it, the chances are you have never really heard from them.

    Have you wondered why?

Well, that is because they never get paid for stuffing envelopes really.

What they get paid for is convincing another set of people to fall in the trap.

So for every person whom you can convince to buy the starter kit, you get a percentage as commission and that is how you get an opportunity to make money.

Let’s face it that cannot be legit, and neither is the claim that work from home stuffing envelopes has no fee to start.

Therefore, a business which has its roots based on unethical business practices cannot be a fair trade to be associated with.

It surely reeks of malpractices and misinformation, and it can’t be something that you would be proud to talk about in your friend circles.

This is exactly why when anyone tells you that it is a great business, think twice, ask relevant questions, and only then you should go on to make a decision about joining it or not.

    Type of Pyramid Structure

Most times, there is a huge question mark on the legitimacy of a pyramid structure that does not sell anything exactly.

This is exactly why I am not convinced about the legitimacy of the work from home option of stuffing envelopes.

Let’s face it; you are getting paid for convincing others to fall into the trap.

So knowing very well about the dangers involved, you are actually trying to get more people into the scheme just to retrieve the money that you have put into it.

This is exactly how a pyramid scheme works and puts a huge question mark on its authenticity.

This is exactly the reason that there is a question on whether the scheme of envelope stuffing as working from home option is legit.

Though there is no regulatory warning against this business, the truth is that this is a scam from the word go.

There is absolutely no business sense in getting more and more people in the scam.

In the absence of any real product for sale, the only gainers can be the people who are perpetrators of the scheme or who start it off and collect money for the start up kits.

    Conclusion

While envelope stuffing as a working from home alternative has merit in the concept that it needs no skill, no degree or experience to excel, the relative purpose of the whole scheme is extremely questionable.

There are many red flags in the business model.

    • Whole purpose of the effort
    • No end product to sell
    • Intent to create a pyramid structure by getting more and more recruits
    • Charging for a start-up kit.

    Come to think of it.

Do you really need a start-up kit to learn how to stuff envelopes in any form whatsoever?

The biggest problem with the whole initiative is the fact that in this era of social media marketing, the idea of sending envelopes stuffed with flyers with postage paid for seemed extremely out of sync with the current need and the demand trends.

It is almost like trying to light the fire using stones when you have matchsticks or gas lighters at your disposal.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Work from home stuffing envelopes is a phrase all too familiar to those who are looking for home-based jobs. One of the oldest home-based work opportunities is envelop stuffing. Although it has been mired by claims of it being a scam, there are legitimate envelop stuffing jobs, where one can earn a steady income and do it from the comfort of their home.

For those interested in this line of work, follow the following tips to avoid being scammed.

1- Do research to find legitimate envelope stuffing jobs
When going online, you will be bombarded by hundreds of companies claiming to offer envelop stuffing jobs. Most of them will be scams. Instead, narrow your search by using phrases such as ” legitimate work from home jobs stuffing envelopes”.

Identify the companies that you would find after the search and make a comparative analysis, including their terms and conditions of service. Do not sign up for program before making a thorough investigation into what is being offered to you. Take your time.

2- Keep away from unrealistically high paying envelope stuffing ads
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. When you find an envelope stuffing job that requires you to make any payment upfront or for an ad, they are a scam.

In case you fall victim to them and actually pay them, chances are that you will not even receive the envelopes to do the stuffing. Under no circumstances should you give out your social security information.

    3- Carry out background checks
You need to go a step further by cross referencing the information provided by the company with the Better Business Bureau and FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

In case the company is running a scam, you will be able to find a list of complaints reported about them. This is a simple way to determine the legitimacy of an envelope stuffing business .

4- How much money will you make for stuffing envelopes
Find out the terms and conditions of payment. Is it hourly, daily, weekly, commission based or salary? And how much do they pay on that hourly basis, or is payment made against the number of envelopes you have stuffed. Find out how payments are made and who is responsible for making the payments.

5- What is your job description?
Inquire from the company what your job requirements will be, what is expected of you and how you should carry out the envelope stuffing. If they are unable to give you a procedure for doing your job, they are probably scamming you.

6- Research the envelope stuffing reviews
Find out what others are saying about the envelope stuffing companies before signing up to any of their programs. Select the companies where most reviews are positive. But be careful not to base your choice on these reviews only, as some of these reviews may have been written by some parties with vested interest.

Remember, stuffing envelopes is not a get rich quick scheme. In most cases, you won’t even be able to quit your regular job. But, it’s a great way to make some extra cash for those who like to work from home stuffing envelopes.

How to Get Paid to Stuff Envelopes

Mailing jobs have dwindled, thanks to companies that increasingly rely on email. To make matters more challenging, most mailing work was automated years ago. But don’t despair –– it takes some sleuthing, but you can find legitimate mailing jobs that that allow you to work from the comfort of your home. Find out what other businesses, such as printers, charge for mailing services. Then, be prepared to charge competitively –– usually less than a quarter per envelope –– for printing the labels and stuffing, stamping and sealing each envelope.

    Organize Your Workspace

Set up a space in your home so you can store each client’s envelopes, enclosures, address labels and stamps in preparation for quick assembly. If you have a printer, learn how to print labels, letter and envelopes, as this allows you to charge more per project. Companies may only pay a few pennies per envelope for services that do not involve printing.

    Call Around

Start calling or emailing companies that send direct mail as part of their sales efforts to express interest in handling their mailings. Approach real estate agencies, busy boutique stores and marketing or advertising firms to see if they or their clients need mailing services. Offer your services to local printers who get requests from clients who want hand-stuffed or hand-addressed mail. Talk to wedding and event planners to see if their clients want someone to handle their invitations and thank-you notes.

    Classified Ads

Search online classified ads, such as at Craigslist.org, that feature ads from businesses that need someone to handle mailings. Since more envelopes are opened when they’re hand-addressed, occasionally companies put out calls for people with legible handwriting to address envelopes. Be prepared to show your clear, legible handwriting if that’s a requirement. These types of projects typically pay a few cents more per envelope, since they require more time than simply stuffing, labeling and stamping. Watch out for ads that ask you to click on a link to get more information, as these are typically scams. Instead, use the email address or phone number provided in the ad to contact the business to express interest in doing the mailing.

    Paying for Work

Ignore advertisements that promise to send you a list of companies that have mailing jobs once you pay a processing or supply fee. Anytime a company requests money in exchange for a list or an actual mailing project, steer clear, as it’s a scam. These types of businesses don’t give you mailing work. Instead, they make money when you pay a fee to find out that you, too, can make money by placing the same ads asking people who need work to send money to get a list that doesn’t even exist.

    Additional Warning Signs

If the advertised mailing jobs sounds too good to be true, question it. To determine the company’s credibility on a website that seems to be offering legitimate mailing jobs, look for contact information that includes an email and street address as well as a phone number. Determine if the company is an established business by reviewing its About Us page and looking up reviews about the business online. The promise of big money should make you suspect a scam, as mailing jobs rarely pay more than pennies per envelope.

Working from home with a leaflet packing job sounds pretty good doesn’t it? It’s easy, it’d be flexible, it sounds like something that there would be a lot of so you could make a lot of money, right?

We’ve all seen them advertised. A quick Google throws up a number of results for leaflet packing jobs I can do at home.

Packing jobs from home are the number 1 thing people search for when they’re starting to look for a work at home job. Many years ago, packing jobs at home were actually very real and something loads of people, generally housewives, did to earn a little extra cash.

This is probably why so many people today still think of packing jobs first when they’re considering working from home. They’re quite familiar to us.

    So…what about today?

Unfortunately, every single one of these types of jobs we’ve looked at has been a scam.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Work from home jobs UK – envelope stuffing

The only thing to keep in mind when considering a work at home job stuffing envelopes is that it’s not a real way to earn money from home.

You’ll be asked to pay a fee (for joining, instructions, kit etc…) then one of two things might happen.

Earn money from home packing envelopes

You might be sent some work (these could be adverts encouraging people to buy the directory) which you’ll then send out. The company will then deem your work unacceptable and refuse to pay you or reimburse postage. Or, you may never hear from the company you paid ever again.

You will not be paid for stuffing envelopes, and you will lose any money you paid as a fee.

    Packing cards at home

In much the same way that leaflet packing jobs are a thing of the past, most card packing jobs offered as work at home jobs are also scams.

If you imagine the sheer volume of cards that are packed and sold every year, it’d be so time consuming by hand that factories use machinery to complete this job.

There are smaller card sellers who won’t have the money to use a factory to pack their cards…but they also don’t sell massive quantities of cards and so would be unlikely to offer this sort if work. As always…research!

Stuffing leaflets free start up kit

There are a number (sadly, too many) of websites out there offering ‘free start up kits’ to people looking to start stuffing envelopes. You’ll get the ‘free kit’ just as soon as you purchase some sort of directory or work at home list. Again, this is a scam. Do not pay for a directory or list, it will not lead to earning money from home.

You will not make any money stuffing envelopes no matter what the company your considering is telling you.

Envelope filling from home – does it make sense?

The best way to look at this is to ask yourself if stuffing envelopes at home actually makes sense. In a time when automated machinery is cost effective, time efficient and more reliable than human manpower, why would a company pay to ship you leaflets, and pay again for you to stuff them into envelopes. They wouldn’t, and anyone telling you differently has a separate agenda to that of helping you find work.

Why do companies offer home packing jobs?

Why do these packing job company scams exist? To make themselves money, it’s as simple as that. They’re dishonest and prey on people who are often desperate for some extra money. More people are getting to know of these types of scams, but there are still far too many people who send money in the hope of getting some paid work.

Just remember the old adage: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

How Legitimate are Work From Home Envelopes Stuffing Jobs?

There are a lot of people these days that are more than eager to work for extra money if they find the opportunity to do so. A little extra income won’t hurt, especially to people who need the money for future plans. One of the many methods claimed to be able to earn you a good income is known as work from home envelope stuffing. As its name suggests, it’s nothing more than filling envelopes with the necessary files then mailing them to a list of addresses – except for the last part, you don’t get to leave your home. It’s so easy, and it is often advertised as a great way to make some quick cash.

Unfortunately, this is not a totally legitimate moneymaking scheme. Work from home envelope stuffing is very questionable, and for a good reason. Many people perceive envelope stuffing as a scam simply because its history proved it to be one. It used to be a popular tactic by Depression era con artists, and many have been deceived ever since. As such, it is best that you first study how the whole moneymaking scheme works before you conclude whether or not the whole thing is legal.

Why People Still Bite into this Scam?

Despite the ugly history of home-based envelope stuffing, so many people still fall into it and a lot of them learn the hard way. It’s very unfortunate that some people don’t actually learn from others and their own experiences. Instead, they still hope that the envelope stuffing job that they are about to get is legitimate.

Such people are either ignorant or are desperate for cash and has no other option, much like all those victims of envelope stuffing scams and similar money-grubbing schemes during the Depression. These people naturally have a great need for some extra money to augment their income, but still make the mistake of jumping on the opportunity without checking things first.

    How This Scheme Works

Now how does this scheme work? Allow us to detail it step by step.

First, you’ll be invited by someone to learn about a moneymaking scheme where you only get to stuff a lot of envelopes. Alternatively, you can learn about this through a very convincing advertisement.

You will then be led to somebody else who will sell you a “starter kit” so you can begin working. You will be convinced that to earn, you’ll first have to pay for the kit, make a deposit, or whatever else that can get you to pay up. Experienced individuals can tell that this is a sign of a scam.

After this, you may start working, filling all the envelopes for hours and checking twice if you’ve done it all right. You then mail all the envelopes you’ve worked hard on, present some sort of proof to whoever hired you then get paid for it. Unfortunately, you usually don’t get paid at all – the client may refuse your output, cancel the job for some reason, or not show up at all.

Avoiding work from home envelope stuffing scams isn’t that difficult. You only need to refuse it before things go out of hand. Don’t entertain any dubious offer, or at worst, just listen to it then make your own research.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Work-from-home job postings are everywhere. Legitimate job listings include positions in industries ranging from customer service to software development to healthcare.

Then, there’s the dark side of remote job listings. These include a variety of ways to make money fast, including suspiciously high-paying data entry jobs, research positions, and multi-level marketing opportunities.

Unfortunately, most of those positions aren’t what most people would consider a real job – and many of them are outright scams. There are no benefits, no hourly wage or salary, only a promise of making money. Sometimes, you’ll be charged a fee to get hired or acquire a kit to get started … later to discover that the only money to be made is from other would-be entrepreneurs.

So how can you tell if a work-from-home job is legitimate? Learn how to research companies and spot scams.

Red Flags That Indicate Possible Work-at-Home Scams

    1. It seems too good to be true. Your mother was right: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. No one is going to pay you thousands of dollars to do something that a machine could do for pennies. So ignore any ads that promise you a six-figure income for stuffing envelopes, entering data, or assembling kits.

    2. You have to pay money to get started. Legitimate employers pay you, not the other way around. If the ad mentions paying a fee to get started, it’s a scam.

Some legitimate work-from-home job boards do charge a monthly fee to access listings, but you won’t find their ads tucked into listings on other job sites.

    3. They want a lot of personal data right off the bat. Real employers don’t need your bank account information and social security number before you’ve even been offered a job. If you’re asked to give up this information, the product is you and the service is identity theft.

    4. The employer has no digital footprint. At this point, nearly all employers have websites and social media presences. If you can’t find the company by Googling – or if the information you find is presented in a less than professional manner – beware.

    5. The company’s URL seems off. Don’t trust links embedded in job ads. Go to the corporate website and navigate your way to the ad. If you can’t find it, look at the URL again. Does it seem … slightly off? Scammers often buy up URLs similar to those of legitimate businesses. So, you might think you’re applying for a job at XYZ Corp (URL: XYZCorp.com). But the scammy listing will ask you to go to XYZCorp.jobs.com – which will turn out to be a funnel into a work-at-home scam.

    Examples of Job Scams

Now you know what you’re looking for in general terms. But will you recognize a fraudulent work-at-home ad when you run across it in real life? These real ads from scammers will give you a sense of what you’ll see in an “opportunity” that isn’t.

The “Get Paid Every Day” Scam

The “Part-Time Work for Overtime Wages” Scam

The part-time job ad had a disclaimer in a tiny font at the bottom of the page which said there is risk involved and you might not do as well. The “might not do as well” part was repeated at least four times in the disclaimer.

If you think about it logically, the chances of making money doing a minimal amount work simply aren’t high – other than, perhaps, for the people making money scamming others. Again, think twice before you click on anything that sounds too good to be true – it is.

    Find Company Information

If you’re still not sure — and remember, companies can be very creative about how they advertise their opportunities because they want you to think that the position is legitimate — there are places to research work-at-home jobs at legitimate companies.

    • Better Business Bureau (BBB): Enter the company name or the website into the Better Business Bureau search box to find out whether there have been complaints and whether the company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau. I entered the name of a company I was interested in and found there had been seven complaints, all of which were unresolved.
    • Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC provides information on commission actions. For example, operators of online malls that disguised themselves as legitimate business opportunities settled Federal Trade Commission charges that they were illegal pyramid schemes.

Be wary and be careful. Despite the best efforts of computer systems and staff, it’s hard for job sites to stop work-at-home scams from being posted. Posters are creative and sophisticated and are continually coming up with new ways to advertise their information.

How to Report a Work-at-Home Scam

If you uncover a work-at-home scam – whether you identify it right off the bat or extricate yourself after the fact – you can help prevent other workers from being taken in. Report the scam, and do your part to make job searching a little safer for everyone.

File a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center or the FTC, report the company to the Better Business Bureau, or report a phishing scam to Google. But speak up: if you were fooled, even for a moment, others will be, too.

These organizations often use volunteers to stuff envelopes, but they may be willing to hire someone at a low rate to work with their donor list.

If in your pursuit to discover a legitimate work from home job you come across an opportunity to earn money stuffing envelopes at home, you would do well to consider the advice given below. In particular, we will be discussing this widespread online (and print) scam and what you must consider before considering any such job.

There are a lot of methods to make money on-line, some of them authentic and some are not. Unfortunately though, there typically appear to be more dishonest jobs available then there are legitimate. The truth is that the rip-offs are very widespread since they appeal to folks’s need to discover a specific type of work.

Everyone would love to have a job that pays well and is comparatively easy to do. However in case you are presented with an occasion to work at home stuffing envelopes you have to be aware that these job opportunities are virtually always a trick. Rather than securing yourself a straightforward job you can do from your own house, you will put out your money and time and find yourself with nothing to show for it.

The truth is, the FTC is advising folks that they should be cautious about a majority of these offers. You will actually lose money with these offers because to begin the work it’s essential to send in about $20 to $30 to acquire the information packet that can “show you how one can earn cash”. The preliminary info packet will likely be advertised as free of charge but you’ll get a primary pack which then says if you wish to pursue the opportunity you need to mail in some money.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, ads for envelope stuffers often fail to tell the whole truth. Many are actually ads for business opportunities that have been disguised as help-wanted ads. Some are outright scams. However, there are some legitimate jobs that involve stuffing envelopes and preparing mailings, even if that’s not all they entail.

    Definition

Envelope stuffer jobs involve preparing mailings for an employer. Typically, an employer provides documents that an envelope stuffer folds and places in an envelope for mailing. In some cases, this job also involves sealing the envelope and applying appropriate postage, though some employers provide pre-stamped envelopes instead. Some employers may also require an employee to address each envelope based on a list of recipients. In addition, an envelope stuffer may have to place the envelopes in a mailbox or take the mail to the local post office.

    Traditional

Often, people who stuff envelopes have titles including mailroom clerk or office assistant. For example, a mailroom clerk or office assistant may stuff envelopes for a company’s direct mail campaign to send advertisements, brochures or questionnaires to a mailing list. In most cases, however, this is not the only task the clerks perform. Often, mailroom clerks also collect and distribute mail throughout a workplace. Likewise, an office assistant may answer phones, handle scheduling tasks and greet customers, in addition to mail-related work.

    Work from Home

Work-from-home envelope stuffer jobs usually involve receiving mailing materials in the mail or picking the materials up in person. The worker usually stuffs the envelopes with the products the employer has specified — such as sales letters, product catalogs and brochures. The employer may then pay per envelope stuffed or by the hour. However, according to I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To by Bethany Mooradian, most mailing houses use machines for mass mailings, making legitimate envelope-stuffing jobs rare. Still, some employers do hire at-home workers to perform secretarial work and include mail preparation tasks in the job description.

    Scams

When browsing through help wanted ads, you may see envelope stuffer jobs promising payment ranging from several cents to a dollar or two per piece. Some may promise a full-time income working from home, or even assert that you can earn thousands per week stuffing envelopes in front of your television. However, these companies typically require applicants to pay a fee to get started. After you pay the fee, many companies send instructions for you to place ads to attract others interested in envelope stuffing jobs. Instead of earning money by stuffing envelopes, you convince others to pay for the same information you received.

    Considerations

Take steps to avoid scams when looking for an envelope stuffer job by asking for details — such as exactly what the job will entail, how you will earn money, when or how you will receive payment and how much you will earn. Ask who will pay you and whether you will receive a commission, rather than an hourly wage, to weed out the scams from the legitimate offers. In addition, check the Better Business Bureau for complaints about the company for which you want to work.

It’s one of the most common questions in the comments on any post related to working at home (and even some that aren’t): “How can I find a real work-at-home job?” The key to the question is the word “real.” While there are plenty of shady people out there on the internet willing to promise you thousands of dollars a month for stuffing envelopes or doing vague, unspecified work on your laptop, genuine work-at-home opportunities are a bit more scarce. The good news is that if you know what you’re looking for, you can absolutely find good jobs that you can do entirely or mostly from home.

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

    Here’s where they’re hiding:

Do You Know What You’re Worth?

    1. …on employment sites that specialize in work-at-home jobs.

If you’re interested in telecommuting, but afraid of getting taken in a work-from-home scam – and more on how to avoid these in a minute – signing up for a site that vets job listings might be the solution. For example, FlexJobs allows users to access verified work-at-home job listings for a monthly, quarterly, or yearly fee.

    2. …in free listings of legitimate work-at-home employers.

Don’t feel like (or don’t have) the money to spend on listing services? Many job search sites compile their own lists of employers who frequently offer legitimate work-at-home opportunities – for example, this one. Of course, every company listed won’t currently have openings, but if you’re willing to do a little digging, you’ll at least start your search knowing that you’re dealing with companies who really do post telecommuting jobs on a regular basis.

    3. …on the old-standby job sites.

Nearly all of the big-name job sites (e.g. Monster, Indeed, etc.) allow you to filter your search for specific terms. Try “work-from-home,” “work-at-home,” or “telecommute,” at any of your favorite sites, and you’ll see jobs that allow workers to telecommute on a full- or part-time basis. Just remember to read with a critical eye.

    4. …at your current employer.

If you like your job, but can’t stand your commute, don’t make plans to jump ship just yet. You might be surprised to find out that your boss would be as excited to have you work from home as you would be to trade your business casual for a set of pajamas. (Why? Money. Telecommuting saves real estate costs for the company.) If you’re a good employee, and have a solid relationship with your boss, make your case. Even if you can arrange to work from home some of the time, it’ll save you the cost and aggravation of commuting every day.

    Finally, a word about scams.

“If it sounds too good to be true, you can be sure it is!” writes Alison Doyle at About.com’s Job Searching site. “Also, read any ‘offers’ you get very carefully. One candidate for employment got a very detailed job offer from an employer. The only problem was that she hadn’t applied for the job and buried deep within the lines was a request for her bank account information, so the employer could pay her. It was a scam, of course, but with some of the well-written ones it can be hard to tell.”

If a listing involves any of the following, it’s most likely a scam:

    • A lot of money for not much work. If it’s part-time, but full pay, or a sure path to wealth, or entirely on your own schedule but guaranteed to make you higher wages than that of a corporate attorney who works 80 hours a week – it’s a scam. Alas, in life, there’s no shortcut to riches.
    • A request for your bank account numbers. Never, ever give out your banking information. They’re not trying to pay you faster. They’re trying to drain your savings account.
    • An initial investment. Real work-at-home jobs won’t require you to buy a kit or a training program or a starter pack or anything of that nature. Those are the hallmarks of pyramid schemes at worst or multilevel marketing jobs at best. The latter, while not necessarily a scam, promises money if you sign up more people to sell products. Doyle notes that this is essentially starting a business, not getting a job, and that if you’re doing it, others are too … and probably none of you are getting rich.
    • Anything that’s easier done by a robot. No company in the 21st century is going to pay a contractor to stuff envelopes when they have postage machines that can do it at a fraction of the cost.

    Tell Us What You Think

Do you work at home? How did you find your gig? We want to hear from you! Leave a comment or join the discussion on Twitter.

Relocating to a new country not only means a new way of life, but also a potential change in job for the transferee’s spouse or partner. More and more, work from home positions are being created by companies who realise the value in allowing their employees to telecommute and the benefits of leveraging talent from all across the globe versus one location.

These opportunities are a natural choice for someone who has recently moved. But there are, and will likely always be, work from home job postings that are scams. So how do you find out which positions are valid and which are not? With research and careful consideration, you can identify warning signs. Below are five tips to help you avoid scam work from home opportunities!

There is a saying that states, “If it is too good to be true, it probably is.” This thought is a great overall guide to follow when you start a work from home job search. If the position promises to make you rich very fast, there is a good chance it is not a legitimate offer. Make sure to follow your intuition, as it may also guide you by letting you know if something feels “off” about the job.

Research, research, research! When you find a job posting that interests you, dig deeper. Carefully inspect the details of the post. If there is no salary information posted, find out! Use whatever contact information is provided to ask what the salary is, how often you get paid or if it is a commission-based salary. You should also ask about what equipment is needed to do the job and who provides it.

Go to the company’s website and get a feel for the kind of company they are; keep in mind, a professional looking website does not always mean they are a legitimate company. The Internet is a powerful tool. Do not be afraid to use it to find out more!

Never send money or bank account information to get a job. Legitimate companies will never ask you to pay to get hired or to pay for start-up costs or equipment.

Avoid certain types of jobs. There are certain jobs that fall into the “scam” category more often than not and should be avoided. These are at-home jobs such as processing claims, posting ads, stuffing envelopes, entering data or starting an online business. If you find a job like this that seems valid, think twice. And do twice the research before you apply.

  • Ignore the email offering you a position. Many times, scammers will send out emails that state you are hired. The problem is, you may never have applied for the job in the first place! If this happens to you, read the email and fine print very carefully. There will likely be some indication, such as a request for your bank account information so you can get paid, that it is a scam. It is best to ignore these emails.
  • As you prepare for your relocation, ask your current employer if there are telecommuting positions available or if they are willing to make your position open to a remote employee. (Click here for a few tips on starting the conversation.) They may be willing to work with you to find the best fit.

If nothing is available, you can utilise your network to find work from home jobs. Your connections might work at companies that have generous work from home policies. You won’t know until you ask! Your IMPACT Group coach can also help you find the resources you need to get started on a work from home job search. With careful research, securing a remote position is very possible!
