Ever read an article about the top viral posts of a year? If you have, you probably noticed that most viral posts are of visual nature. This in essence is part of the decreased attention span people have online.

People have been trying to answer questions like this for years: How can I make a song a hit? How can I play in the NFL? How can I become world famous?

The reality is, for the vast majority of people, this is simply never going to happen.

For the 5% of bloggers that are able to create blog posts “that go viral”, the answer is to work your ass off until you get lucky. Then try even harder to figure out what’s working and refine what you write to connect with those key elements that resonate with your audience.

Sure, you might learn a few superficial tricks from Buzzfeed and Upworthy, but how important is a flash in the pan post vs. ongoing engagement with the people you’re actually trying to connect with?

On this topic, I just have to tell it like it is: Most people asking how their blog post go viral are too lazy or impatient to do all that hard work. They’re focused on the superficial social proof that comes from high social share counts and not on creating value.

I think it was Thomas Edison who said, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”.

When I look at our most popular posts based on page views vs. the posts that refer traffic to our company site that generate leads, it’s not the same at all. These three posts alone have over 16,000 social shares, but they’re not “lead gen” posts.

But… they do work together with content that is meant to convert. And that is the point of this post: Create content that’s meaningful and package it for exposure. Don’t just make content for exposure.

Attract

Content intended to generate awareness. Engage

These are posts that focus on answering specific questions that buyers often have, whether they are early or middle stage in the sales cycle. Examples, how to’s and lists of tactics work pretty well to create the kind of value that create confidence and inspire an interest in seeking out more information.

Convert

This type of post isn’t published very often on our blog. That’s the job of our agency website. But when we do, these are posts that explain specifically how we work to deliver certain kinds of services, case studies and particularly clever ways of solving difficult marketing problems.

Any of these types of content could “go viral” but the focus is more on relevancy to the target audience, the inclusion of our messaging and approach, packaging and promotion for exposure. “Going viral” gets you page views, but often not a lot else – unless you’re delivering value through meaningful information that is relevant to the community.

These are critical questions you need to answer if you need to make your content go viral. What makes a good headline? Why are some headlines better than others?

In my search for answers, I went through the Medium Top 100 list and analyzed all the headlines.

Here are the two things that they all had in common:

  • They were short.
  • They were captivating.

When it comes to Medium, you need to frame your headline in a way that gets your message across in the fewest words. It’s like composing a tweet. You shorten your message again and again until you’re left with the bare essence of it.

  • “how to get a picture to go viral” is a title that is short, attractive and gets its point across.
  • “How-To” headlines work best.
  • “Why” headlines are also popular.
  • “List” headlines never fail.

Other than that, it’s up to you how to make the title catchy and appealing.

4. Find the right publication

Viral content marketing is all about targeting the right audience. If you pour your heart out in an article but fail to reach the people who are interested in your story, your efforts will be wasted. Thankfully, there is a way out.

The easiest way to trend your article on Medium is to find the right publication. Either your content must be good enough to get picked by a publication or you must submit to one. But why?

Most publications on Medium have a certain number of followers. These are people who are interested enough in the topic to stay updated. A lot of them also subscribe to email newsletters.

What better way to reach all of those people than to submit to a publication?

5. Get people to read your article within the first hour

The first hour is critical. It’s the time when Medium decides how popular your article is and how to promote it. If you can, somehow, get a lot of people to read your article within the first hour of publishing, it’s a guaranteed hit.

It’s not easy, I understand. But there are certain things you can do to ensure getting at least a hundred recommendations in the first hour. The first of these is having Medium followers. You can build a following even before you submit an article by recommending other’s articles.

Being active on Twitter also helps. If you have enough followers on Twitter, you can generate enough traffic within the first hour to build momentum. If you don’t have followers, you can ask some of your popular friends to share.

But you’d be dead wrong if you thought Twitter was a platform that has passed. Twitter grows in popularity by the day, and is still one of the biggest traffic sources for sites all over the world, and in every niche you can imagine.

Thus, it is obvious that going viral on Twitter can greatly help your blog in getting some much needed traffic, and you might be surprised to find that it’s easier than you think.

I have to add a disclaimer, however, that you should be reading as a preface to every post about going viral: the cornerstone of creating viral content is creating amazing content, so don’t think that these methods will work if you’re putting out garbage!

Most active Twitter users follow a lot of people, so you need to get into the “prime real estate” by tweeting at your followers most active times.

While there are all sorts of studies on when the best time to tweet is, it really depends on your followers.

To post at the best possible time no matter who is following you, I highly recommend two free tools, Tweriod and Buffer.

Nobody is going to check out your link on Twitter, let alone ReTweet it, if the headline (the tweet itself) doesn’t pull them in like a magnet.

What would you rather click:

  1. How To Get More ReTweets
  2. 3 Ways To Easily Go Viral On Twitter

The first is boring, who hasn’t read a Twitter article about retweets before? How are people supposed to get excited about this headline?

The second is specific and appeals to people’s emotions.

“How to easily go viral you say? You have my attention good sir.”

How to make a blog post go viral

You’ll find the best results if you write an enticing headline for the post itself, like I did for my post on Facebook marketing.

Clickable headlines get right to the point: in the second example, you are going to see 3 ways, and they are going to be easy to implement.

HubSpot found that longer posts also tend to get more clicks than shorter posts, adding to the validity that people want description!

Don’t waste their time with lies, but entice them with the truth, if you have a fantastic article to share, don’t just share it plain Jane like, get people excited, and they will want to click through and share.

Leave people bored, and you’re just chirping in the wind.
