How to password protect notes on the iphone

You can secure notes that have your personal data, like financial details, medical information, or website logins — with a password, Face ID, or Touch ID.

Before you begin

  • Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  • Turn on Notes in your iCloud Settings, or make sure that you use notes stored on your device. Notes accounts that sync from a third-party service, like Gmail or Yahoo, won’t include some Notes features and can’t be locked.

If you’re signed in to iCloud with a Managed Apple ID, you can’t lock your notes.

Set up your notes password

Before you can lock your notes, you need to create a password. Make sure to create a password that you can easily remember by giving yourself a password hint. If you access your iCloud notes on more than one Apple device, you’ll use the same notes password to lock and unlock all of them. If you forget your password, Apple can’t help you regain access to your locked notes, but you can create a new password to use for locking future notes.

You can create a password on your device in Settings or in the Notes app. After you lock a note, it’s automatically protected with your password on all your devices. If you use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock notes on your other devices, you must enter your password, then enable Face ID or Touch ID on the device you’re using.

Create a password in Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Notes, then tap Password.
  2. If you have multiple accounts, tap the account that you want to create a password for.
  3. Enter a password, then give yourself a password hint. If your device supports it, enable Face ID or Touch ID.

Touch ID.

  1. You can not give different passwords for different notes. You need to use the same password for all notes.
  2. You can not password protect the Notes app. Anyone can open your Notes app and they can open notes which have no password protection. But they can not open your password-protected notes.
  3. Anyone can delete your password-protected notes. I think Apple has to update their notes app. Because it shows delete options even without entering a password.

The Notes app on your iPhone and iPad is very handy for jotting down notes and things you must remember. If you put any private or sensitive information in your notes, you can password protect notes in the Notes app.

You probably protect your device with a passcode, but an extra layer of protection is always good for security. The same password is used for any notes you protect on any device, iOS or Mac. But you can choose which individual notes you want to lock.

Before You Begin

Before you password protect notes on your iOS device, make sure the device is up to date. You can only lock notes in iOS 9.3 or later. When you update your iOS device from an earlier version of iOS, you’ll be prompted to upgrade the Notes app the next time you open it after the update.

You should also enable Notes syncing in your iCloud Settings on your iOS device, or System Preferences on your Mac. Or make sure that you use notes stored locally (“On My iPhone” section in the Notes app) on your iOS device. Notes accounts that sync from a different third-party service, like Gmail, can’t be locked.

To make sure your notes are being synced through iCloud, open the “Settings” app and tap on your name at the top. Then tap “iCloud“. Make sure the “Notes” slider button is on (it should be green).

Notes are a convenient way to collect information. You can record passwords, reminders, medical information — anything you might need to jot down on the go and reference again later.

But if you use the iPhone’s Notes app for personal or sensitive information, you might want to protect the information by locking notes with a password, Touch ID, or Face ID.

It’s easy to lock your iPhone’s notes, but the lock feature is a little confusing, and might not work the way you expect it to. Here is what you need to know:

  • Before you can lock a note, you need to create a master password. You can’t give every note its own unique password.
  • Just adding a password won’t lock the note — you need to take the second step of hiding the note.
  • All notes with locks are locked or unlocked together. You can’t have some hidden and some unhidden notes with locks.
  • If you create a new note, it won’t have its own lock unless you add it. That means you can have notes with locks (which are either hidden or unhidden) and notes that don’t have locks on them at all.
  • When you view a locked note, all the locked notes become unhidden, so you will need to rehide them when you’re done.

How to password protect notes on the iphone

Apple pushed out its iOS 9.3 update Monday, the release that brings the long-awaited “Night Shift” feature to iPhones and iPads. But other iOS features are getting some much-needed attention, too.

Notes, an often overlooked app, also has a handy new trick: the ability to password-protect individual notes.

While adding a password to your daily to-do list might seem unnecessary, there may be some notes you don’t want anyone who picks up your device to be able to see. While it’s never a good idea to store sensitive personal information — like account numbers or passwords — in an easily accessible place (we recommend using a password manager, like LastPass or 1Password), adding an extra layer of security to your day-to-day notes is definitely a useful feature.

Now, adding a password to your notes is easy, though there a couple important points to keep in mind.

You can add a password to any new or existing note in the Notes app from the share menu by selecting “Add Password.” If it’s the first time you’ve used this feature, you’ll be prompted to create a new, unique password on the next screen.

This password will apply to all the notes you protect, not just this one. Additionally, the password should be different from the one you use with your Apple ID (you can add a hint to help you remember) and you can also choose to enable Touch ID for added security.

You can see which notes are protected by the lock icon that appears under the note’s heading. Once you’ve set a password, notes will still appear “unlocked” until you close the app or restart your device. It’s important to remember, however, that the first line of the note will always appear — even when the note is “locked” — so you may want to avoid putting any sensitive information at the top of a note.

Once you’ve unlocked a note — either with Touch ID or your password — you can share and edit your notes as you normally would.
