How to print photos in windows 10

A lot of computer users (and IT support) despise dealing with printers and hope to see a completely paperless home and office one day. But until that magical day arrives, the fact remains, there are times when we still need to do it.

If you’re a new Windows 10 user and want to print from one of the new built-in Universal apps, you might not be sure what to do. Here’s a look at how to print from apps like Photos and Microsoft Edge, and a workaround to print a story from the News app.

Print from Windows 10 Photos App

When you have a photo open, select the photo you want to print, and then select the More actions (…) at the upper-right corner and select Print from the dropdown menu. Or, simply hit Ctrl+P on your keyboard.

How to print photos in windows 10

Then you can select the printer you want to use. And, just like normally printing in Windows, you can choose other options like saving it as a PDF or send to OneNote. You’ll also have options for how you want to manage the quality of the printout.

Printing from Other Windows 10 Universal Apps

Printing from other Windows 10 Universal apps is a completely different story right now. In fact, in several of the built-in apps, the option is simply not available.

But, you can print from Microsoft Edge, either hit Ctrl+P keyboard shortcut or select the More actions button and then Print.

But unfortunately, you cannot just print what you highlight in an article, which is a great way to save ink and paper when printing from other modern browsers. For more on that, check out our article on how to print only selected text from web pages in Windows.

How to print photos in windows 10

If you do just want to print what you’ve highlighted from a web page, you can open the page in IE. For more on that, read our article on how to find and use Internet Explorer from Edge in Windows 10. Of course, the other option is to change your default browser. To do that, check out our guide: How to Change the Default Web Browser in Windows 10.

Workaround to Print from News app

If you don’t see any print options in other built-in Universal apps like News, you’ll need to use some type of workaround. In the News app if you find an article that you want to print out, select the Open in Browser icon at the top of the app. Then you can print from Microsoft Edge, or whatever you set your default browser, too.

Say what you will about Windows 8.1 and the Charms bar, but it allows you to print from more apps than you can in Windows 10 (right now anyway).

But remember, Microsoft is treating Windows 10 as a service, and more functionality will be added on a regular basis via updates. So as the OS matures, hopefully, we’ll see improvements to printing in Universal apps.

We store most pictures digitally on mobile devices, SD cards, and PCs and are easily accessible online. But what if you want an old-school physical copy to frame? This guide shows you how to print photos in Windows 10.

Because printer software can be different for each manufacturer, this guide covers built-in tools offered in Windows 10. The first method doesn’t require additional software outside your printer’s driver. The second method uses Microsoft’s Photos app, which also requires a printer driver. This guide even shows you how to print from three popular browsers.

Before you print, make sure your printer driver is up-to-date, preferably using a software update program provided with your printer. For example, Epson installs an Epson Software Updater that checks for product updates and suggests other “useful” software. You can also download new drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Remember, never download and install third-party driver update programs!

Use the Right-Click Method

Use the File Explorer in Windows 10 to locate the photo you want to be printed and then right-click on the file. Select the “Print” option listed on the pop-up menu.

The Print Pictures window appears on the screen. First, verify the destination listed under “Printer.” After that, select the paper size, quality, paper type, desired layout, and the number of copies. Check the box next to “Fit Picture To Frame” if needed.

For additional customization, click the “Options” link located in the bottom right corner, followed by “Printer Properties” in a pop-up window. Another pop-up window appears providing settings specific to your printer. The example below is based on an Epson XP-7100 printer.

Click on the “OK” button when you’re done, and you’ll return to the Print Pictures panel. Click on the “Print” button to complete the printing process.

Use the Photos App

This app is already on your Windows 10 PC, so there’s no need to download and install anything new. It’s typically set as your default photo viewer.

Locate the photo you want to be printed and either double-click on the file or use the right-click method. If you right-click and the Photos app is your default viewer, click “Open” on the pop-up menu. Otherwise, highlight “Open With” located further down the menu to expand another rollout menu and then select the “Photos” option.

Click the Printer icon in the top-right corner or press Ctrl+P on your keyboard.

In the pop-up window, your printer settings reside in a menu on the left. Verify that your printer is the default destination. If needed, adjust the orientation, number of copies, paper size, paper type, photo size, and page margins. You also have the option to fill the page or shrink the photo to fit.

For additional options, scroll down the menu and click the “More Settings” link. Here you can set collation, output quality, and color mode. You can also set the document binding to the left, right, or top edge. You’ll find a borderless printing option too (on or off).

Click on the “OK” button to finish.

Built for power and control, the Windows 10 desktop offers many more options when it comes to printing your work. But that power and control often mean wading through a sea of menus.

When working from the desktop, Windows shuttles your work to the printer in any of a half-dozen ways. Chances are good that you’ll be using these methods most often:

Choose Print from your program’s File menu.

Click the program’s Print icon, usually a tiny printer.

Right-click your unopened document’s icon and choose Print.

Click the Print button on a program’s toolbar.

Drag and drop a document’s icon onto your printer’s icon.

If a dialog box appears, click the OK or Print button, and Windows immediately begins sending your pages to the printer. Take a minute or so to refresh your coffee. If the printer is turned on (and still has paper and ink), Windows handles everything automatically, printing in the background while you do other things.

If the printed pages don’t look quite right — perhaps the information doesn’t fit on the paper correctly or it looks faded — then you need to fiddle around with the print settings or perhaps change the paper quality.

To print a bunch of documents quickly, select all their icons. Then right-click the selected icons and choose Print. Windows quickly shuttles all of them to the printer, where they emerge on paper, one after the other.

When printing with an inkjet printer, faded colors usually mean you need to replace your printer’s color inkjet cartridge. You can buy replacement cartridges both online and at most office supply stores.

Actually, this question has been answered, in multiple places, along the following lines:

Windows Photo Viewer offers a list of templates that correspond to the most common print sizes.

Suppose you want to print four different 3″ x 5″ pictures on a single sheet of photo paper.

Follow these steps to print all the four pictures in one page.

1. Select all the four pictures, right-click and select Print. You should get the option “How do you want to print your pictures?”.

2. On the right-panel, there are various layouts available. Choose 3.5 * 5 in . (4).

This fits all the four images in one page. You can choose other layouts available as per your requirement.

Only thing is, it doesn’t seem to work. At my first attempt I selected 4 pictures, right-clicked and selected print, scrolled down the right column on the Print Pictures window and selected “3.5 x 5 in (4)”. Only one of the four selected pictures appeared in the preview pane even though letter sized paper was selected and 4 pictures of the selected size should fit. The one selected picture did occupy a “correct” spot representing about 1/4th of the page; the other 3 spots on the page were blank.

Thinking that the 4 pictures actually needed to be re-sized to 3.5″ x 5″ I did exactly that with the 4 pictures previously selected, then tried the “select 4 pictures” > right click > select Print > select 3.5 x 5 in (4). Once again, only one of the pictures showed up and there were 3 blank spots where the other pictures should be.

Even if I select only one of the pictures and select the 3.5 x 5 in (4) option for printing, only one instance of that picture appears on the page.

So, How do you print 4 different 3.5 x 5 in. pictures on a letter sized page?

If you want to take your own photos, nothing beats having a digital camera. Copy photos from your camera to your Windows 10 Pictures folder for viewing and sharing. Or use the Camera app with the built-in camera found in many laptops and tablets.

  1. If your digital camera came with a cable, connect that cable to the camera, connect the other end of the cable to a USB port on your computer, and turn your camera on. If your laptop or tablet has a built-in card slot, you can take the memory card out of the camera and insert it in that slot.

If your computer doesn’t have a built-in card slot, consider buying a small memory card reader that plugs into your computer and works with your camera’s memory card. You don’t need a multicard reader, just a reader with a single slot the size of your camera card. I consider a card reader more convenient than using a cable.

The techniques described here for importing photos from a camera also apply to videos. Follow these steps as well to copy videos from your digital camera to your computer.

Windows 10 detects your camera and may briefly display a notification indicating Select to choose what happens with this device. If you’re quick enough to tap or click this notification, Windows 10 displays your choices, as shown.

How to print photos in windows 10

Select Open Device to View Files, if that option is available, to open File Explorer to the photos on your camera, as shown.

How to print photos in windows 10

  • Select the File Explorer icon on the taskbar to start File Explorer. Then look for and select your camera in the Folders panel on the left side of the screen. Your camera is located under This PC in the Folder pane.
  • In File Explorer, select the photos you want to copy from your camera to your computer. Depending on your camera setup, the photos may be in a subfolder. Use these techniques to select the photos:
    • Hold down the Ctrl button and click or tap photos to select them individually.
    • Press Ctrl+A to select all the photos in a folder.
  • Copy the photos you selected so that you can paste them into a folder on your computer. Use one of these techniques to copy the photos:
    • Press Ctrl+C.
    • On the Home tab in File Explorer, select the Copy button.
  • In File Explorer, select the folder where you want to copy your photos.

If you want to be able to view and edit your photos with the Photos app, select the Pictures folder or one of its subfolders and copy the photos there.

Organizing photos can be a challenge. If you dump more than a few dozen photos into the Pictures folder without using folders, finding a specific photo later will be difficult. Using folders with unintelligible names doesn’t help, either.

  • Paste the photos into the folder you selected earlier. Use one of these techniques:
    • Press Ctrl+V.
    • On the Home tab in File Explorer, select the Paste button.
  • If you often import photos from a digital camera or memory card, you can speed the process by telling Windows to open File Explorer immediately when you attach your camera or memory card to your computer. On the Start menu, choose Settings and type autoplay in the Find a Setting box. In the Search Results panel, select AutoPlay Settings. The AutoPlay window opens, as shown. In the Memory Card and Camera sections, choose Open Folder to View Files (File Explorer).

Most photos today are taken on our phones and not on dedicated cameras and our phones are exceptionally smart. When you take a photo, you know that any text on it, or say a complex pattern on someone’s T-Shirt, will show up as it is. It won’t be ‘reversed’. This phenomena of reversed items simply doesn’t exist if you use your phone to take photos. That said, there may still be exceptions and if you have a photo with the text or other items showing up backwards, you can flip photos to fix it.

Flipping a photo is a fairly basic edit that most image viewers and practically all image editors have.

    Flip photos

The stock Photos app on Windows 10 has basic image editing features and you can use it to flip photos pretty easily.

Open the photo that you want to flip in the Photos app. Click the Edit & Create button at the top. From the menu that opens, select Edit.

How to print photos in windows 10

When the photo opens for editing, you will see a panel on the right with various controls for editing the image. One of these controls is a button called Flip. Click it, and the image will be flipped/mirrored. You can then save it over the original, or as a copy.

How to print photos in windows 10

The Photos app only flips in one direction which is horizontal. If you need to flip an image on its vertical axis, you need to use a free app called IrfanView. Most Windows users have heard of this app as it’s a popular image viewer and editor that has been around for quite a few years.

Open the image that you want to mirror/flip in IrfanView. Go to the Image menu item and in the menu that opens you will find both Horizontal and Vertical flip controls. Use them to flip the image however you want, and then save it over the original, or as a copy.

How to print photos in windows 10

Flipping photos normally doesn’t have an impact on their quality however make sure that when you save the flipped image, either over the original or as a copy, that you do not have any compression presets already enabled. IrfanView does allow you to compress images so be careful that you don’t accidentally use one of its compression features for a photo you want to preserve the quality of.

Photos doesn’t offer image compression nor does it allow users to convert photos from one format to the other so it’s a safer option.
