How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Re-keying locks can sometimes be a pain, since you usually need to get a locksmith to do it for you. However, with Kwikset’s SmartKey technology, you can re-key a lock in under a minute. Here’s how to do it.

For this guide, we’ll be using a Kwikset Kevo smart lock, but many newer Kwikset locks come with this same SmartKey technology. If you’re not sure about your own lock, take a close look at it and see if there’s a tiny oval hole next to the keyhole. If so, then it’s a SmartKey lock.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Before you get started, though, you’ll need a few things:

  • The current key that goes with the lock.
  • A Kwikset SmartKey tool (One should’ve came with your lock, but if not, you can buy one on Amazon).
  • The new (or rather, old) key that you want to use instead. This must be a Kwikset key, as Kwikset and Schlage keys are totally different from one another (and won’t work in each other’s locks). So if the rest of your house uses Schlage keys…you’ll need a separate key for the Kevo, unfortunately.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Start by inserting the original key into the lock and turning it clockwise 90 degrees.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

With the key still in the lock, take the SmartKey tool and insert it into the small hole next to the keyhole. Push it in firmly and you might hear or feel a tiny click. After that, remove the SmartKey tool.

Next, without rotating the key lock, remove the key and then insert the new key. Make sure that it’s all the way in the lock.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

From there, simply rotate the key 90 degrees counterclockwise. You’ll hear a definite click. At this point, the key and lock should be straight up and down.

Now, to make sure that the lock has successfully been re-keyed, keep the key in the lock and rotate it back 90 degrees clockwise. Then try to remove the key. If the key doesn’t come out, then the re-keying was successful.

After that you can rotate it back and remove the key. Make sure that the key can actually lock and unlock the door. Once you’ve confirmed that, you’re good to go!

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

You can check out notifications, usage history and protect your home against any break-ins with the kwikset smartkey. What do you do when your kwikset smartkey reset is not working? Read more below

Living in the urban regions has its advantages and disadvantages. There are so many opportunities, people to socialise with and the standard of living is manageable but what throws me off the most is the number or home burglaries that often occur around my neighbourhood. For a sense of security, I decided to install the kwikset smartkey on my door. It is one of the best decisions since I have had zero break-ins since installations as opposed to the countless I had before. Lately, I have been having issues with the lock and my attempt to reset the code seemed fruitless. After hours of searching for a suitable solution, I stumbled upon the answer.

How to fix your kwikset when a simple reset is not working

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Step 1; disassembling

Disassembling the lock is the first step you should take. It is easy and not time consuming. Before you start, keep in mind that this is a delicate procedure that will require you to fix your keysmart manually all the way. After you have removed the lock from its shaft, remove the retaining u-clip form the case and body. Before you start anything, you should have a safe place where you can store the parts to avoid losing them.

Step 2; cylinder removal

This step is tricky but not hard to follow through once you understand. Removing the cylinder will require you to completely slide it out of the case. To do this, you will need to press down on it evenly with 5 fingers. Do this along the length of the cylinder. You can use a hard object to so for this step if you find your fingers too slippery or exhausting.

Look out for the check ball; ensure one side is secure and the other has the finger lock before you completely take it out. Safely store the finger lock bar and check ball security once you have removed them. Ensure the fingers are inside and arranged correctly when removing the finger locking plate. You do not want to taper with the spring that is behind the finger locking plate.

Step 3; arranging the fingers

When you reach this part of the kwikset, you should be able to locate the channel groove in both the finger locking plate and finger. Arrange the fingers in the locking plate to make them even so that the grooves in their match the ones in the finger. When this is completed, replace your locking plate with the aligned fingers using the u channel. While holding the fingers against the spring you left on the tumbler body, place them uniformly.

Replace the finger locking bar and place it onto the locking plate while you are still holding the assembly of the spring and tumbler body. To know that you have done this perfectly, confirm that the finger locking bar is flush with the side of the plate and is raised as usual. Keep holding everything firmly so they can stay in place. While you are still holding the tumbler and locking the plate tightly against the spring, insert your key into the tumbler body.

Step 4; add the check ball

At this point, you can straight up add the check ball while you are holding the other parts. Repress the plastic block that is located at the back side of the finger locking plate and slide the assembly into the case and rotate it clockwise at 90 degrees. To make the perfect estimate, check the u channel located inside the tumbler case; you want to make sure everything is perfect and supposed to be where it should.

Step 5, double check

If the finger locking bar was not flush when you inserted the tumbler, there might be a big problem of inconsistency in the end. This certainly does not mean that you have to start the whole process over again, but you can redo the finger section while you are still holding tightly the rest of the assembly. While you are at it, you should try to confirm that the finger is not poking out of the tumbler body. When you think the alignment is perfect, remove the new key and re-insert it to check whether it is rotating smoothly. Finally, secure the assembly using a retaining clip.

Conclusion

This is the easiest way to reset and re-key your kwikset smartkey lock without having to spend any more money on an electrician. I am impressed that I can fix the lock within minutes and it still provides me with the security it did before the malfunction.

Likewise, people ask, can Kwikset SmartKey locks be picked?

Even one of Kwikset’s most vocal critics, Marc Weber Tobias (more on him in just a bit), told us that the SmartKey lock is virtually impossible to pick. Other videos criticizing Kwikset point out that the lock can be easily compromised using a specialized bypass tool used by locksmiths.

Secondly, how do I know if my Kwikset lock is SmartKey? These locks can be identified by a small vertical slot on the plug, located to the left of the cylinder’s keyway**. These locks will also be marked “Kwikset” or “Weiser”.

Also, can Schlage locks be keyed to Kwikset?

Basically, you cannot re-key the lock from Schlage to Kwikset, but you can change the lock cylinder from Schlage to Kwikset. A locksmith will be able to do it for you. Changing the lock cylinder will still cost less from changing the lock itself.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

How do Kwikset smart keys work? We’re here to answer this question and provide you with a guide to reset and rekey your keys. Let’s start!

What Is A Kwikset Smart Key?

The SmartKey is a wafer lock that is user-rekeyable and a product of Weiser (Canada) and Kwikset. It utilizes five wafers interacting with a sidebar to protect the lock from key pumping and lockpicking.

This model comes in place to relieve the costs and stress resulting from spending on door lock rekeying services.

SmartKey’s exceptional design offers advanced security while taking minimal effort and time to rekey or reset. You may not believe it as it sounds unbelievably straightforward, but it is!

You can identify SmartKeys by looking for the tiny rectangular hole on the left side of the keyway.

How Do Kwikset Smart Keys Work?

Kwikset keys are extremely durable, thanks to advanced features. (Rawpixel)

The lock consists of six depth increments (including the depth and height of the valleys and mountains on the key) and five pins.

Homeowners can reprogram the locks by putting the previous key into the lock, then inserting a specific tool into a hole on the lock’s surface.

This act will move the back about ⅛ inch and separate the slider and pins, holding them apart when the homeowner inserts the new key.

After that, the lock will register the mold on that new key, resetting the connection between the slider and pins to engage with the new key.

The SmartKey is the brand’s solution to the public’s frenzy of key pumping, particularly to cope with the conventional pin tumbler cylinder’s weaknesses.

Its rekey technology outperforms other smart keys and has taken the lead in control security, thanks to the below enhancements:

  • Great drill resistance

Kwikset smart lock cylinder utilizes two balls in the key’s front face, providing extra resistance to attacks from intruders or drilling.

If you’re concerned about the quality, don’t worry, as the American National Standards Institution has certified the deadbolt found in Kwikset’s lock as the best residential security.

  • Bump guard protection:

The brand integrates the patented technology into its products, which can replace the traditional tumbler and pin design and ensure lock bumping prevention.

  • Outstanding pick-resistance

Those locks have gone through the strictest lockpicking test – par. 11.6, UL 437.

Despite the success in offering resistance to lockpicking and bumping, SmartKey’s weaknesses in the design can still make it vulnerable to attacks.

How To Use a Kwikset Smart Key?

You may think that it is tricky to use such a modern, functional key and requires technical knowledge of rekeying and locking technology.

Yet, that doesn’t go for this model. We’ll show you the easy steps.

Rekey Kwikset Smart Keys

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Unlike many people think, rekeying smart keys is straightforward. (Max Pixel )

One of the advantages of the SmartKey technology is that the rekeying process is effortless. You just need the following components to do the job:

  • SmartKey tool
  • New key
  • The original key

With these three kits on hand, follow the below steps to reprogram your lock:

  • Put your lock’s original key into the keyway and twist it clockwise at a 90-degree angle. Don’t remove it right away.
  • Maintain the previous kit’s position inside the keyway while inserting the prepared tool into your lock’s keyhole.
  • After that, remove the tool and previous kit to reset your lock. Remember not to turn the kit back to its previous position before getting it out.
  • Program the new kit by putting it into your lock and twisting it counterclockwise – 180 degrees.
  • Twist it again clockwise to its original position (90 degrees). Now, you can remove it to finish the rekeying task.

Reset Kwikset Smart Keys

Resetting a smart key needs the help of some specific tools. (Pixabay )

Similarly, prepare necessary tools and kits for this job first:

  • Replacement key
  • Security cylinder
  • SmartKey tool
  • Reset cradle

Here’s how to reset your Kwikset stuff with a specific reset cradle:

  • Detach the cylinder unit or tumbler from your door lock.
  • Detach the clip holding the inner cylinder.
  • Take the inner cylinder out from the tumbler.
  • Twist the second dial toward the right using your reset cradle to align the arrow and the starting point.
  • Put the tumbler into your reset cradle. Then, twist the second dial toward the left using the cradle to meet the arrows.
  • Put the SmartKey kit into the designated keyhole and push it in until it makes a ‘click’ sound.
  • Remove it and insert a new key that you intend to use. Hold it there and gently push the tumbler out from the reset cradle.
  • Twist it clockwise at a 90-degree angle to return it to the original position. Then, remove the new kit.
  • Finally, secure the tumble back to your lock.

Can I Reset Kwikset Smart Keys Without A Key?

Yes, you can use a resetting kit instead of the missing operating kit. Using an SC1 tool or a reset cradle depends on your SmartKey’s version.

With a reset cradle, you just need a new kit that you intend to replace the old one with and a specific SmartKey tool. Meanwhile, with an SC1 tool, you’ll need to prepare blank keys.

If you need more instructions on this job, check out this tutorial video:

What if you don’t have any resetting kit around either? Can you still reprogram your smart keys?

In this case, we advise you to take your deadbolt to a reliable locksmith. Without a resetting kit, you’ll need to disassemble the cylinder.

If you don’t have experience in this task, you may risk damaging your expensive lock.

Bottom Line

Remember that SmartKeys is different from other regular modern locks that run remotely or electronically.

These locks are relatively similar to the traditional models functioning primarily through the physical keys and keyhole.

It’s important to understand, ‘how do Kwikset smart keys work?’ to avoid damaging your door lock permanently!

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

What do you do when your kwikset smartkey lock will not turn? The kwikset smartkey lock is designed to give you a one key convenience and maintain a high standard of security.

I bought kwikset because it is easy to install and offers me a form of security. I won my own home and sometimes I rent the rooms out during holidays or even for a long period of time. Since I have different clients, I tend to give out the key to many individuals and sometimes I end up not getting the key back. Lucky for me, I only need to rekey the locks to change the keys. Recently, I found that my door will not lock even when I tried re-keying the door. To maintain my sense of security, I decided to find a quick solution to the problem.

This is how you can fix your kwikset smartkey lock malfunction

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

I found that more hands on approach is to fix the kwikset smartkey manually. Start by disassembling the lock, it is easy and won’t take a lot of your time. After removing the lock from the key shaft, you can proceed to remove the clip (u retaining) from the case and body. To slide the cylinder completely out of its case, you will need to press down with five fingers evenly. Ensure you do this along its length. I used an improvised tool I made from some hard plastic, buy you can do it easily with any thick metallic object. Watch out for the check ball and ensure it is secure on one end and the finger lock is on the opposite before you completely slide it out.

Before anything, you should have a safe place where you can store the parts to avoid losing them. Safely store the finger lock and check ball security once you have removed them. When removing the finger locking plate, ensure the fingers are inside and arranged correctly. Do not taper with the spring that is behind the finger locking plate. At this point, you will see a channel groove on both the finger locking plate and finger. Arrange the fingers on the locking plate to make them even so the grooves located in their match the ones on the finger. Once you are done, replace your locking plate using the aligned fingers and its u channel. Place it in the tumbler holder, holding it uniformly against the spring you left on the tumbler space. This will actually place the tumbler into a perfect re-keying position.

While you are holding the assembly of the spring and tumbler body, pick up the finger locking bar and place it onto the locking plate. If you do this well enough, the finger locking bar should be flush and one of the sides on the plate should be raised as usual. Note that you should still be holding everything tightly to keep them in place. Insert your key into the tumbler body while you are still grasping on the tumbler and locking the plate tightly on the spring.

While you are still holding these parts, you can now add the check ball. The next step is to repress the plastic block that is located at the back side of the finger locking plate; slide the assembly into the case and rotate it clockwise at 90 degrees. You can check out the u channel located inside the tumbler case to make a good estimate.

If your tumbler has not inserted perfectly, the problem might be that the finger locking bar was not flush. You do not have to start over; you can re-do that section while maintaining a lock on the other assembly. Try to confirm that the finger is not poking out of the tumbler body. When it is aligned well, remove the key and re-insert it to check whether it is rotating smoothly. Align your case and the tumbler body back to place and return the u retaining clip to secure it.

Conclusion

After this experience, I still maintain my respect for this lock. The problem was fast and easy to fix. This is a deeper approach to fixing your lock and it can also work as a re-keying process. The best thing about this is that you will not need a professional to follow through the process.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

This post is a paid advertisement for Kwikset and I was given product to use and review. All opinions are my own.

It has been one year since we moved into our home in South Carolina, and I am thrilled to finally cross off a few priority items on our forever growing “to do list”. Changing out all of the locks and organizing and securing my tools in the garage were items I kept meaning to get to but kept putting off. When Kwikset asked if I’d like to review the Kobalt tool cabinet with accompanying Kwikset door hardware, I didn’t have to think too hard about it. What a dream collaboration! I’m excited to tell you my thoughts about Kwikset’s SmartKey Security products and why I think you will love them too!

Why You Should Consider Changing Your Locks After Moving

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Kwikset SmartKey Security products help keep your family safe. Our home has seven exterior doors with deadbolts. Yes, you read that correctly–SEVEN! And those seven doors came with various keys, faulty locks, and worn-out hardware. Our home is only a decade old but has had two previous owners which makes for a lot of potential and unknown people owning keys to our home! For security reasons, if you recently purchased a home it’s a good idea to replace or re-key your locks. I have better peace of mind now knowing exactly who has a key to our home.

How to Re-Key Your Locks with Kwikset

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous keyInstalling all new door hardware and re-keying our locks for one-key convenience was so simple! I literally had my 13 year old help us with the process and even he could install the new hardware and rekey within minutes. One-key convenience allows me to secure our home, tools, garage, and shed without the hassle of carrying unique keys for each lock.

With our new hardware in place we simply inserted the key that came with the hardware and turned the key a quarter turn to the right. Next, we inserted and removed the SmartKey tool (included with the hardware) and removed the key. Finally, we inserted the new key that was designated “the key” into the lock and turned it a half turn counter-clockwise. We repeated this process on every exterior door and our tool cabinet until all locks in our home use the same key cut for one-key convenience.

If this sounds in anyway complicated, I assure you it is not! It’s more difficult to type out than it is to do. Take a look at the diagram below to see how simple it is rekey your locks.

What’s also wonderful about this system is that if your keys are lost or stolen, you can rekey the lock within seconds without removing or replacing the door hardware!

To say that I am obsessed with my new Kobalt 3000 Steel Tool Cabinet with Kwikset SmartKey Security would be an understatement! When we moved, we actually downsized our living space in addition to losing 800 square feet of basement storage. In this home, I no longer have a craft room, office, or huge basement workshop. Everything now needs to fit into our two-car garage, including my husband’s home gym.

Subsequently, question is, how do you break into a Kwikset deadbolt? There are a couple of ways to get into a Kwikset deadbolt lock without a lock picking kit.

  1. You are able to get a paper clip and make it into a picking tool, as a hook or a rake.
  2. Another way is to pierce the cap at the end of the plug and insert a wire that is formed to catch the edges of the tails piece and turn it.

In this way, are all Kwikset Smart keys the same?

KCTV5 went to a large department store and was able to buy six Kwikset locks, five with the same serial number on the back, which means the locks and keys are the same. You can take your lock and key to a locksmith and have them rekey it, making it unique.

How do you break a door lock with a screwdriver?

If you’re locked on the other side, look for a tiny hole on the doorknob. Push an eyeglasses screwdriver, a paper clip hammered flat, or a very small butter knife into this hole. Push it straight through as far as you can, and turn or twist it until it catches a groove and the lock clicks open. Pick the lock.

Beside this, how do you rekey a lock without the original key?

REKEY LOCKS WITHOUT AN ORIGINAL KEY There is more than one way to unlock a lock cylinder. A locksmith can pick the lock open or shim the lock in order to unlock it. In order to rekey a lock cylinder, the locksmith must bring the lock to the “unlock” position so that the cylinder can be easily removed.

Additionally, can you make copies of Kwikset smart keys? You can buy the key’s and hardware stories such as Home Depot. Usually they come with the rekeying tool and instructions. If you find one that does, then Home Depot can make as many copies of it as you want, and you can rekey your locks to use this non-smartkey.

Simply so, does Kwikset Smart Key work with any key?

A Kwikset SmartKey tool (One should’ve came with your lock, but if not, you can buy one on Amazon). The new (or rather, old) key that you want to use instead. This must be a Kwikset key, as Kwikset and Schlage keys are totally different from one another (and won’t work in each other’s locks).

How much should it cost to rekey a lock?

Rekeying locks on your home costs $40 to $100 plus $15 to $40 per lock or about $75 per hour. If you call the locksmith to your home, you might also pay a trip fee of $50 to $100. Actual quotes depend on the type of locksmith you need for the doors you can’t open. Rekeying doesn’t mean replacing.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

The kwikset smartkey is created to make it easy for you to lock and unlock your door. Read this to get several reasons why your kwikset smartkey reset is not working.

Buying the kwikset smartkey is one of the best decisions I made. It provides me with extra security and locking and unlocking my door has never been any easier. I do not have to worry even when I lose my keys when I’m out. The problem is, recently the kwikset keypad has been acting up. I have had it for several months but now it does not work as it should. The kwikset keypad is supposed to light up but it won’t. I have never had any trouble so I do not know how to go about this situation. I set out to find the solutions online and this is what I came up with.

Check out these top solutions

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

When the keypad does not light up

Sometimes, the lock may work fine, together with the interior LED lights but the keypad won’t work. This is more common in newly purchased kwikset smartkey. Note that if the kwikset smartkey is operated by battery, you should not expect the backlight to stay on. This may wear the batteries sooner than they should and you will end up spending more money than you should have.

Making the keys light up requires a code but you will have to first press the lock button located on the keypad. If your keypad light has never been on since the kwikset smartkey lock was installed, you will have to open the door, lock the interior lock manually and then finally press the lock button on the keypad. Using the previous instructions will work well after this.

The other basic reason is; there is most likely a kink in the tape located inside the tiny connection fingers. If they do not line up, it may explain why your keypad is not working.

The door alignment can cause malfunction

Kwikset electronic deadbolts from the smart code series should offer you an alternative to the basic key deadbolts. Some of the main features are the programmable lock and unlock codes and single push locks. The best thing about this key lock is that it does not require a professional lto install. It also operates on only 4 AA batteries which are replaceable. The biggest problem is that smart code issues may be cause by poor door alignment or wrong programming procedures which will lead to a dead or malfunctioned keypad.

Here is how you can fix that

The first step

First, remove the batteries out of their units and then depress the program button. Do it three times if the unit failed to operate with its key or it does not operate well after installation. Allow some few seconds or a minute to pass by before you can re-install the batteries back. Ensure you are holding the lock button strongly for a successful reinstall. Keep holding the lock button down until you see some movement in the bolt. As soon as there is movement you can release the button. To indicate there is a successful programming of the bolt operation, you should be able to hear a beep from the unit and see a flash from the LED lights.

The second step

Sometimes, the door may not operate smoothly when you are using its key to open it. this calls for a door realignment. While pressing the lock button on your keypad, enter your security code to ensure the bolt is re-synchronised and the key works well.

The final step

If the smart code and keypad do not initialise after removing and re-installation, take out the battery pack and repeat the process. While pushing the programme button three times, take out the batter pack. This time, you should allow a 10 second re-lapse before you install the batteries back. Replace the batter and wait for the signal from the LED lights. If this does not happen, call a professional for help.

Conclusion

All this information was very helpful, I found out that my battery has been overworking and this is why my keypad was misbehaving. Aside from that, I was able to use this information to fix other issues on my kwikset smartkey. The alignment malfunction was the main cause of the keypad failure. Once I was able to change the batteries and align all programmes back in place, the kwikset was working as good as a new one.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Can Your Locks be Rekeyed to Match an Existing Key?

My customers often find themselves in a situation where they’ve bought a home, but there are one or two locks in the home that work from a different key than the key that works the rest of the locks. Or, they simply don’t have a key for one or two of the locks.

This happens when the previous home owner bought new locks and installed them, usually to replace a broken lock.

But you, the new home owner, want one key to work EVERY lock in the house. Can the locks be rekeyed to work from one key?

You can rekey all of your locks to match an existing key when the locks all have the same keyway. You can test if the locks use the same keyway by taking the existing key you want to use and seeing if it slides into the keyholes of the locks you want to match that key. If it slides in, they can be rekeyed to work with your existing key. If the key will not slide into the lock, it is another brand, using another keyway, and that lock cannot be made to work from the existing key.

The figure below shows two of the most popular keyways in American, the Kwikset and Schlage. Their respective keys have raised and lowered spots so that it can slide into the keyway of its lock. I’ve highlighted in the figure, in black, the low spots of the key. You can see that the low spots of the Kwikset do NOT match the low spots of the Schlage. So it is impossible to slide a Kwikset key into a Schlage lock and a Schlage key into a Kwikset lock. These two locks cannot be rekeyed to match an existing key of the other.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous keyKwikset vs Schlage Keyways

If the locks are the same keyway, you can rekey them using any of the following:

  1. Have them rekeyed where you bought them. Locksmiths often rekey locks to match at no cost when you buy the hardware through them. Some big box stores do it but may charge for the service. Any of our four Arizona Lock Shops will rekey them for you.
  2. Buy a home rekey kit. If you want to take on the task of doing it yourself, rekey kits are available. But you should know rekeying does take some practice and patience. It may not be worth doing yourself if you only have one or two locks.
  3. If you ordered them online or they were there when you bought the property, take them to a locksmith shop and have them rekeyed. See our article, How Much do Locksmith Charge to Rekey Home Locks.

Different Lock Brands Can Often be Keyed to the Same Key

Even though locks may be made from a different company, there several companies that use the same, or similar-enough keyways so that a key from one can be work the other brand of lock.

The table below shows brands that will typically work together. This is useful when you are replacing a lock with another and want to make sure that what you buy can be rekeyed to match your existing key.

Table: Lock Brands that May Use the Same Key

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

The Kwikset Kevo smart lock comes with a clever design that lets you simply touch the lock to unlock it—but that’s not the only feature that makes it so great. Here’s how to get the most out of our Kevo smart lock.

Use Your Previous Key with the Kevo

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Buying a new lock requires using new keys. You could hire a locksmith to change the lock pin pattern of the deadbolt to match your old keys, but most of the time it’s not worth the trouble.

However, the Kevo comes with Kwikset’s SmartKey technology, which allows you to use your old Kwikset key to unlock the Kevo—no locksmith necessary. It’s really easy to do and only takes about 30 seconds thanks to a special little tool that comes with the lock. Check out our guide to see how to program it. (If your house previously used Schlage locks, then you won’t be able to use that key to unlock the Kevo—you’ll need a new Kwikset key insetad).

Get a Kevo Fob So You Don’t Have to Use Your Phone

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

The Kevo normally relies on location and Bluetooth data from your phone in order to determine if it’s actually you that’s trying to unlock your door. However, that means you have to leave the app running in the background at all times. If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, you can use a Kevo Fob instead of the lock relying on your phone.

The Kevo Fob acts as a direct replacement for your phone. If you touch the lock with the fob in your pocket, it will open. So if you don’t want the app running in the background all the time or you usually have the Bluetooth off, you can use the fob instead. Here’s how to set it up.

Create “eKeys” for Family Members

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

One drawback of the Kevo (as opposed to other smart locks with keypads) is that you just can’t share a simple keycode with other people if you want to give them access to your house. Instead, you have to give them their own “eKey” to use on their phone, but it’s easy to set up.

Just open up the Kevo app and send an eKey to a contact in your phone (or send them an email if they’re not in your contacts). From there, their phone will now act as a digital key to your Kevo lock, and you can even restrict access at certain times or only give them temporary access if they’re a guest.

Control Your Kevo Remotely (or With Alexa) with Kevo Plus

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

By itself, the Kevo only lets you lock and unlock your door from your phone if you’re nearby and within Bluetooth distance. You can control the lock from afar, but you need Kevo Plus to make that happen.

Kevo Plus costs a one-time fee of $99 and comes with an internet gateway device that you plug into your router. This connects your Kevo to the internet, which then allows you to access your lock even when you aren’t home. Kevo Plus also allows you to integrate Kevo with other smarthome devices, like the Amazon Echo, to control your lock.

Enable Auto-Lock If You’re a Forgetful Person

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to lock the door behind me. Luckily, it hasn’t cost me, but others may not be so lucky. Kevo has an auto-lock feature that automatically locks your door 30 seconds after you unlock it, that way your forgetfulness won’t come around and bite you in the rear end later in.

To enable it, all you have to do is take the interior cover off, locate the #4 switch, and turn it on. After that, your Kevo will automatically lock itself after 30 seconds, whether the door is open or closed.

Lock the Door without Your Phone

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

When locking your door, the Kevo still relies on your phone. So if you don’t have your phone (or fob) with you, you can’t lock your door by touch. However, you can enable a feature called Triple Touch Lock that allows you to lock your Kevo without needing your phone.

You just take off the interior cover on the lock and turn on switch #2. From there, Triple Touch Lock will be enabled. When you leave, just tap on the lock three consecutive times to lock the door.

Hide a Spare Key, Just in Case

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Even though you don’t need a key to lock and unlock your Kevo, it’s still a good idea to have a spare key handy, just in case the batteries run out or some other mechanical failure.

You don’t have to keep this spare key on your person at all times, although it’s probably not that big of a deal, since you carry your car keys with you anyway. However, you could just hide the key somewhere outside your house if you really don’t want to carry it around with you.

How to Rekey a Lock Without the Original Key

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

Many homeowners, when faced with the option to rekey or fully replace their locks surprisingly choose to totally change their locks. Sometimes, however, rekeying is a better option. Should you choose to rekey your locks, you can always count on a reputable locksmith to help you out. But does a locksmith know how to rekey a lock without the original key?

How to Rekey a Lock Without the Original Key

In this guide, we’ll consider the options available when you need to rekey a lock. We’ll also compare rekeying vs buying a new lock for different types of locking mechanisms.

In most cases, a locksmith can rekey your locks even if you’ve lost or misplaced the original key. He/she can either shim or pick the lock in order to unlock the door. When rekeying a lock cylinder, the locksmith will have an easier time removing the lock cylinder after bringing the lock to the “unlock” position. However, locks come in all types, shapes and sizes and not all of them can be rekeyed without a key.

Rekeying a Smart Lock Without a Key

If you have access to the smart lock and you can remove it from the door without causing damage to the lock, then all you need to do is remove the cylinder and use a Kwikset smart key reset cradle to fit a new lock to the lock.

Lost Keys

If you’ve lost your set of keys, your doors are going to be compromised as someone else can gain access if they have the keys. If you want to handle the issue quickly, then rekeying is your best option. As a result, nobody can use the old keys to gain access to your home. Changing locks, on the other hand, can be more time consuming and is often unnecessary. Although, this all depends on the type of door lock and handle that you have installed on your door.

Rekey Lock Cost

In some cases, the total cost of picking and rekeying your lock will not justify the cost of the rekey, which means it may be cheaper to invest in a new lock instead.

Rekeying a Schlage Lever Lock

When it comes to Schlage lever locks, things can get a bit tricky. In an ideal situation, a locksmith would pick the lock, remove the level and pull out the cylinder to rekey it. However, Schlage locks can be hard to pick and it’s sometimes easier to either drill the lock cylinder and replace it with a new one or replace the entire lock.

Rekey vs New Lock

If you have a custom lock (such as those found on French doors) or a designer lock installed- your best bet is to rekey the lock. However, if you’ve lost the keys to one or two generic locks (basic knob/deadbolt) – going to the nearest hardware store, buying a new set of locks and DIY may be a cheaper option.

Bottom Line

Indeed, a trained locksmith will know how to rekey a lock without the original key but you really need to weigh your options. Your budget and type of locking mechanisms that you have, locks and handles are also going to matter. Compare between rekeying and buying a new lock and choose the most suitable option for your situation.

  • A few months ago, I moved into a new house on a couple acres with a few outbuildings. I don’t know why the person who built the place did this, but they put both a deadbolt and a locking door handle on every building door (sheds, barn, coop), including multiple outside doors on the main house. The locks were from all kinds of different brands and there was a separate key for each lock.

    • How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key
    • How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

My original front door deadbolt on the left, color mis-matched and lacking a strike plate, the new lock installed on the right rekeyed to the same single key from the old one.

I don’t know what’s weirder, the fact that someone put a deadbolt and a locking door handle on a chicken coop, or that we had a new pile of 12 different keys with at least one lock we couldn’t even find a working key for. Ideally, my dream was one key for the whole property, so that every lock on every door was keyed off a single key in my pocket (I hate carrying keys and change, one key is enough).

I researched getting a locksmith to come out, but it would run hundreds of dollars in their time plus you can only re-key locks to a key made by the same manufacturer, and by my count we had at least four different brands of locks spread among all the doors. I could save money by bringing the locks to a locksmith’s store, replacing off brands with a single brand and re-installing myself, and there are esoteric expensive kits on Amazon for locksmith-style rekeying, but each brand requires it’s own $80 box of materials plus many hours of practice to master.

While researching the options, I kept coming across the Kwikset line’s “Smart Key” feature that offered simple re-key abilities built-in for homeowners. About 2/3 of my locks were by Kwikset, and the main front door lock was Kwikset, so I decided to see if I could do this myself.

First, here’s a great demo at 1m 25s into this video of how easy it is to rekey your locks with the feature. It literally takes just a few seconds to do it:

Going into this, I’d never replaced a full doornob and deadbolt before so I watched a few videos about it. Here’s a basic one featuring a child replacing a lock that I followed to the letter. If a child can do it, surely I could too:

My first door took me about a half hour to replace but my second took maybe five minutes and my third and fourth doors took just a couple minutes. I can swap door hardware in my sleep now.

Bonus: If you have doors that don’t quite shut right, or locks that don’t quite align, or an IoT door lock that doesn’t run reliably, you can make a few very easy small tweaks to get your doors working better. I used the lessons in the following video and adjusted a couple door strike plates and hinge screws so they all close and lock buttery smooth now.

To convert all my doors to Smart Key, I bought 3 sets of these

$36 combo kits, plus a couple designy deadbolts for doors where it matched some nicer hardware (like my front door). In all, I had to spend about $170 total to replace every lock on my property with a Smart Key variety.

After I swapped in each new door handle and lock, I took each new key, turned them 90º, then used the special tool to insert my existing front door key, and in a matter of minutes, I rekeyed every door in every building all to the same key. The best part was my original key wasn’t even a Smart Key, but the existing Kwikset key that came with the house.

I know there’s a security weakness in having multiple buildings all use the same key, but I can change every door on the property to a new key in a matter of minutes, plus the Smart Key tech claims to be more secure than a typical lock tumbler, and resistant to basic lock picking techniques.

I went into this knowing even with security drawbacks, the convenience of getting everything down to one key on my keychain instead of a pile of unlabeled keys was a big win, and I’d always have the option to update my entire property’s locks in a few minutes.

There aren’t a lot of products that live up to their claims. “Liquid Plumber” drain cleaner that has saved me from calling a plumber on multiple occasions, and totally lives up to its name. Kwikset’s Smart Key is just that like that: you actually can rekey your own locks and you may never need to pay a locksmith again once you’ve installed them.

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

You’ve bought a new home and worry about how many keys the previous homeowner had floating around. Or, maybe you’re tired of the hefty bundle of keys taking up space in your pocket or purse and just want one key that opens all of your doors. Both are good reasons to rekey your home’s locks. And you might be surprised to find out just how easy it is.

    How a Lock Works

Before rekeying a lock, it helps to understand how locks work. The type of lock found on most doorknobs and deadbolts is called a pin and tumbler lock. It contains a cylindrical plug that holds a series of pins and springs. The pins are of varying lengths to allow a specifically cut key shape to insert and turn the lock. For this to work, the length of the pins must match the depth of the grooves in the key.

To make a lock work with a different key, you need to disassemble the lock, remove the pins, and replace them with ones that match the cuts in the key you wish to use. Let’s learn how.

    How to Rekey a Lock

If you have a traditional pin and tumbler lock, rekeying isn’t as difficult as it sounds. First, you’ll need to purchase a rekey kit for the brand of lock you have. The kit should contain various tools to aid in the lock’s removal and a set of different sized pins.

    The 5 Best Electronic Deadbolts

    Step 1: Remove the Doorknob

The first step is to remove the doorknob from the door. To do this, you’ll need to align the holes in the cylinder by either turning the knob counterclockwise and holding it or inserting and turning the key a quarter turn to the right. (This step will vary by maker.)

Once the holes are aligned, insert the remover tool, press, and pop the knob off, separating it from the shank.

    Step 2: Remove the Cylinder

Once you have the knob removed, you need to remove the cylinder from the inside. If your knob has a cap on the back, you’ll need to remove that using an appropriate tool. Then, push the cylinder free from front to back.

Step 3: Take Out the C-Clip

Next, remove the C-clip holding the cylinder in place.

    Step 4: Attach Key Plug

Remove the key plug from its housing using the follower tube included in your kit. Attach it to the back of the cylinder and insert the key in the lock.

Some locks will require that you turn the key 45-degrees. Now, push the cylinder plug out of the cylinder, leaving the plug follower inside the housing to hold pins and springs in place.

Step 5: Dump the Old Pins

Dump out the pins in the plug. Remove the key and insert the new key.

    Step 6: Insert New Pins

Insert new pins as indicated with the kit’s instructions. Make sure they are flush on the top of the plug.

    Step 7: Replace the Plug

Replace the plug into the cylinder, slowly pushing out the plug follower as you go. Once inserted, try the key and make sure it turns. Remove the follower and replace the C-clip until it snaps in place.

Step 8: Reattach Knob to Door

Reinsert the cylinder into the knob and reattach the knob to the door.

    Step 9: Test the Lock

Once everything is reassembled and feels secure, test the lock.

How to Rekey a Deadbolt Lock

If your deadbolt requires a separate key from your entry doorknob, you can rekey it if they are the same brand. To rekey the deadbolt, remove it from the door and repin as you do a doorknob.

    • Make sure the bolt is out and remove the screws holding the deadbolt to the door.
    • Remove the cylinder from the housing and the endcap from the cylinder. Take out the retainer pin.
    • Repin as you would for a doorknob, then replace the cylinder into the housing, replace the retainer pin and endcap, and return it to the housing.
    • Re-check that the bolt is out, then reattach the lock to the door.

When to Change Your Door Locks Rather Than Rekey

Maybe you’re unsure if you should rekey your locks or replace them. There are a few instances where replacing them is the better option.

    • If you’ve lost your key and don’t have a spare, and your knob is locked, you won’t be able to remove the lock to rekey it. You’ll need to replace it.
    • You’re doing a bit of remodeling that includes replacing doors and you want an updated style. That would call for replacing your locks.
    • Rekeying won’t help worn or damaged locks, either. It’s time to replace the locks.
    • If you don’t feel confident rekeying your lock and can’t find someone to do it for you, then you’ll need to change them.
    • To rekey locks to use the same key, all of them must be from the same manufacturer. You can’t rekey a Kwikset lock to use a Schlage key because each maker’s locks have different size holes that will only accept their own keys. So, if all of your doors have different brands of locks, choose the one you want to match, replace the others, then rekey them.

Kwikset offers a range of innovative electronic locks for both residential and commercial use such as the Kwikset 919 Premis Touchscreen Deadbolts. Kwikset SmartCode locks have become popular among people who want electronic locks that can be programmed with an access code to unlock the door.

If you own one of these locks, you’ll definitely want to learn how to change the code on Kwikset SmartCode locks. Why? Because it enhances your security with programmable codes.

    Changing the Code Step-by-Step

    • Use an Allen wrench to loosen and remove the two screws on each side of the interior side of the Kwikset SmartCode assembly. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the lock assembly.
    • While the door is open, press the “Program” keypad button located on the interior side of the door. Enter a four to eight digit security code that you can easily remember on the outside electronic lock keypad.
    • Press the “Lock” keypad button at the center of the SmartCode keypad. Doing this will often program a security code for the first user.
    • Keep in mind that you can create and reset Kwikset lock codes for up to four users. To set a code for the second user, press the SmartCode “Program” button twice to program a security code for the second user, such as a relative. Enter a four to eight digit security code on the outside electronic lock keypad and press the “Lock” button again.
    • Repeat the detailed steps above to create security codes for other users. Press the program button three or four times, respectively, for the third and fourth users to program their security codes.

    Why Change Codes?

Learning how to change the code on Kwikset SmartCode locks is important. You may need to set a separate security code for house guests or close friends. You may also opt to change security codes after a certain period to improve security.

It may be helpful to change security codes when you think someone else is aware of your security code. This is less likely to happen unless you’ve shared your code with someone else.

The purpose of each is to help identify the quality and durability of locksets through a series of operational and security tests.

Perhaps it’s not working as intended, or you’ve forgotten your access codes or want to deny access. Either way, you’ll need to reset it. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to reset your SmartCode lock and when you should do it.

How to Reset Your Kwikset SmartCode Locks

It’s important to understand that a factory reset deletes all access codes associated with your SmartCode deadbolt and restores the lock to the default factory settings. It will also remove it from your smart home system. So, if you have a centralized smart home controller, you’ll want to select the option to remove the device first.

Remember that you should only use the Kwikset SmartCode reset option only when your primary controller is missing or inoperable.

    Follow these simple reset steps:

    • Ensure the door with the Kwikset 888 SmartCode deadbolt with Z-Wave or 913/914 SmartCode is open and unlocked.
    • Then go ahead and remove the battery pack.
    • Press and hold the program button (this should be on the interior back panel of the lock) while re-inserting the battery pack.
    • Hold the button continuously for 30 seconds until you hear a beeping sound and see the status LED flashing red.
    • Press the program button once again until you see the status LED flashing green and hear two beeping sounds.
    • The Kwikset SmartCode deadbolt has now been reset and ready to be set up again.
    • To confirm if the process is complete, test the lock using an existing user code – the lock should not work.
    • If the lock was part of your smart home security system, you need to pair it with your smart home system again.
    • Finally, perform the door handling process again to teach the lock the correct orientation of the door and set up a Master Lock code and other user codes for access (you can do this on the keypad, but it’s more convenient to manage the codes on your smartphone.)

When to Reset Your Kwikset SmartCode Lock

How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

For many homeowners, keyless locks offer the convenience of easy access and peace of mind knowing that you no longer have to carry keys around or worry about losing them anymore. Unfortunately, some situations call for resetting the lock. Here are some of the situations when you may need to do a Kwikset SmartCode reset:

    • When you’ve lost your phone that’s connected to your lock (someone could access your codes and doors if they have full access to your phone)
    • When you move into a new home with an existing Kwikset Smartcode (you’ll want to do a reset to delete all existing user codes and create your unique codes)
    • When you’re moving and want to take your lock with you to a new property
    • When your user codes have been compromised (for instance, an unauthorized person may have access to your master code or user codes)
    • When your lock mysteriously stops functioning (resetting it may fix the issue)
    • When you’re suspicious of unauthorized access and want to provide new access codes to users

Whatever the reason, Kwikset SmartCode deadbolts feature the reset functions to ensure you can perform a factory reset with ease and regain complete control over user code access and management. kwikset is a well brand lock company providing residential lock hardware in around the us.most of residential locksmith companies around the us ,and Irving locksmith llc in particular, uses kwikset brand locks in most of its residential work.

in the latest years due to the high rise of bump keys.Kwikset came up with an original idea to revolutionize the lock industry .The main question that led to develop their new smart lock was. how to prevent a lock from being picked or being opened by a bump key .How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

what is a bump key ?

A bump key is a key blank cut into deep depths .It was initially innovated by Locksmiths a according to a Irving locksmith technician.Irving Locksmith technicians decided to improvise and instead of using standard picking tools to unlock a lock, they designed the bump key.Bump keys are called by the function they use it for to defeat a lock .

Irving Locksmith technician says unlocking a door using a bump key is fairly easy. You just slide in the bump key to the lock cylinder and than pull it slightly out of the lock cylinder . Than take a big screw driver and gently, start bumping (tapping) on the bump key, once you made the perfect bump all the pins that lock the lock cylinder will align and enable you to unlock the door.

    Kwikset smart key locks.

Bump keys were the locksmith trade little secret. But over time secrets tend to be discovered and so it happened the secret on how to create a bump key and use it was wide spread, leading to an increase of residential home break-ins.

After understanding what bump key is and the risk of knowing there people out there that can get their hands on a bump key,you can understand why kwikset had to brain storm a solution. They did, kwikset invented the revolutionary Smart key locks .How to re-key your kwikset smartkey lock to your previous key

    Smart key lock

A smart key lock is a complete re design of the traditional lock cylinder . traditional lock cylinder also named as a pin tumbler lock .pin tumbler lock is a lock mechanism that uses steel round long parts with a sharp edge called pins ,to prevent a lock from being unlocked unless you carry the rite key for it , pins vary by length and by that determine the cut depths.

In kwikset smart key locks there are no pins.in kwikset smart key locks you have small particles called wafers to keep the lock locked . by doing so the affect of a bump key no longer take affect since it was meant for a pin tumbler lock.

Kwikset also offered in its smart key locks a self rekey mechanism, which basically means the owner can rekey his locks any time desired without having to call a locksmith.

Although smart key locks sound like a must have product.Over time once went out in the market, kwikset began to realize that their revolutionary lock is more turning into shame rather than fame.Kwikset smart key locks presented them selves as durable in picking and bump key, meaning a kwikset smart key lock cannot be picked or be opened by a bump key,and by that considered more secured than the other locks who still hold the pin tumbler lock feature.

It was soon realized the kwikset smart key are not safe.Unsecured. not only you don’t need a bump key to open the lock,it is worse, all you need is a standard uncut kwikset key blank and a vise grip!.Just slide the key blank into the lock and twist it with the vise grip and you are in !.

In addition to the lack of security smart key locks carry. The smart rekey feature was found to be not durable and a lot of issues of “key stopped working in the lock”, started to occur. As a1 locksmith owner said ,when the smart key came out to the market house lockouts were brought into the market.According to him Irving locksmith llc will get a lot of calls stating the costumer has keys to the property, but cannot get in to the house .

When Irving locksmith technician examined the lock the technician of irving locksmith found out that due to a poor engineering of the lock cylinder its small components that replace the pins, tend to get stuck inside, due to their shape and thickness, leading the home owner to be locked out,and end up using a local locksmith service to help him get in back to his home.

Smart key lock were supposed to be a break point in lock industry, however now kwikset rather them not to be mentioned .

If you are a home owner and your house is equipped with smart key locks , Irving locksmith in Tx recommend you to change the lock hardware on your door to the standard kwikset locks , if you need assistance in replacing the locks on your door and you are in the irving area , contact Irving locksmith llc. Irving locksmith is a local locksmith company in Irving providing residential service and can assist you in changing the locks on your door.

Periodically rekeying important locks, such as the one on your front door, gives you insurance against intruders. If you have Kwikset locks, it isn’t that difficult to do. Rekeying involves removing the lock cylinder from the knob or deadbolt and replacing the pins — or tumblers — inside with a different set. The procedure for removing the cylinder varies according to the type of lock you’re servicing, and it sometimes requires a special tool. In addition to the new pins, you’ll need one special tool — manufactured by Kwikset — to complete the task.

Remove the doorknob or deadbolt from the door to access the lock cylinder. In most cases, you do this by prying a decorative flange from the inside of the door with a flat-head screwdriver and unscrewing two retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Omit this step if the lock has a control key. If it does, insert the control key, and turn it 90 degrees to extract the lock cylinder.

Extract the lock cylinder from the knob or lock manually if you don’t have a control key. If you’re working with a deadbolt lock, simply slide the cylinder out. If you’re working with a doorknob or lever, you need to perform a few simple operations with a cylinder removal tool — which is supplied by Kwikset.

Turn the lock cylinder over; hook the small end of the cylinder removal tool on the C-ring and pry it off. If you don’t have a cylinder removal tool, you can do this with a small flat-head screwdriver.

Remove the plug from the cylinder with a plug follower, which is another Kwikset-manufactured tool. It fits inside the plug cavity and prevents the springs and top pins from falling out when the plug is removed. Place the follower against the back of the plug and push. The plug comes out the front while the follower remains in the cavity.

Turn the plug upside down to remove the old tumblers. Use a key gauge to determine which plugs you should use to replace them. Divide the key into five or six sections — depending on the lock — and measure the height of each section with the gauge. You then choose the correct plug for each section from a color-coded assortment.

Drop the new tumblers into the holes in the plug, and then reinsert the plug into the cylinder. Remove the follower. Reset the C-clip on the back of the cylinder with needle-nose pliers.

Test the key before you reassemble the lock or doorknob.

Getting a smart lock doesn’t have to mean ditching the deadbolt you’re already using. Here are a few smart locks that let you keep your existing keys.

Don’t want to replace your deadbolt?

Smart locks are a convenient way to manage access to your home, but many models require replacing the entire lock mechanism, including your deadbolt.

What can you do if you don’t want to ditch your existing lock and keys? Check out these smart lock options.

    Kwikset Kevo Convert

The Kwikset Kevo Convert is a retrofit smart lock designed to install on the back of your existing lock. It comes with detailed instructions and extra parts and adapters to ensure a good fit.

    The Kevo app

Inside the Kevo app, you’ll find controls for your new smart lock. Check your lock’s status or lock and unlock it remotely if you’re within Bluetooth range or have a Kwikset Kevo Plus gateway device installed.

With the Kevo Plus installed, this lock integrates with Amazon Alexa. It also works with Ring, Skybell and Nest products, select Honeywell Thermostats, Android Wear and IFTTT.

    Open Sesame

The Sesame Smart Lock from Candy House is a retrofit smart lock in the style of its biggest competitor, August.

The lock’s signature feature is a “knock to unlock” capability that unlocks your door when you knock on the screen of your connected mobile phone.

    Sesame Smart Lock installation

Installing the Sesame Smart Lock is as simple as clipping it onto the thumb latch of your existing lock. Adhesive strips along the bottom and top hold the lock in place.

The Sesame is powered by two CR123A 3V lithium batteries.

    Sesame app

In the Sesame app, you can view the live status of your lock and control it remotely if you have a Sesame Wi-Fi Access Point installed in your home.

The Sesame only works with smart home platforms via IFTTT right now. Integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are still to come.

    August Smart Lock Pro

The August Smart Lock Pro got our Editors’ Choice Award for a smart lock. It’s a reliable Z-Wave lock that integrates with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit and it has a great app.

The lock simply clips onto the back of your existing deadbolt’s thumb latch and is powered by AA batteries.

    August app

The August app supports all of August’s smart locks and is a simple way to manage access remotely, if you have an August Connect Wi-Fi module installed.

The Pro and third-generation August models include DoorSense, which lets you know in the app if the door is locked or unlocked and if it’s open or closed.

    August’s simpler option

You can still purchase the more basic August Smart Lock model, now in its third generation.

This newest model adds DoorSense and boasts a physical redesign, but it doesn’t work with Apple HomeKit.

    The Friday Lock

By far the best-looking smart lock we tested, the Friday Lock is a modern approach to traditional lock hardware, and its metal shell comes in multiple finishes to match your home’s decor.

This Bluetooth smart lock doesn’t come with as many smarts as other retrofit locks, but if you’re looking for a lock that works with Apple HomeKit and via Bluetooth, this is one great-looking option.

    Friday app

Like the Friday Lock itself, the Friday app looks great, too. You can view and manage user access and control the lock remotely when you have an iPad or Apple TV set up as your HomeKit hub.
