How to rearrange your roku channel icons

The Roku Channel Store offers hundreds of video sources, not to mention the hidden channels you can find around the web. Keep adding things, and eventually you’ll have way more channels than you can navigate quickly. Isn’t there some way to move your favorites, like Netflix and PBS, toward the top?

As it turns out, there is. I don’t blame you if you haven’t discovered it yet, though: it’s somewhat buried. First, navigate to the channel that you’d like to move.

Once the channel you want to move is selected, hit the * button on your remote. This will bring up a window that looks like this:

Select “Move Channel” and you’ll see arrows around the channel that you’re moving.

You can now move the channel wherever your like using your arrow keys; the channels surrounding it will move to make room.

Repeat this process until all of your channels are in the perfect order. If you’re like me, arranging things so that they’re just right will take a while, but it’s worth it. Enjoy, you neat freak you.

A Roku TV takes the idea of a Roku — basically a device that gives you access to hundreds of streaming services — and puts it into a smart TV with a ton of great features.

One of these great features is the ability for the user to go in and change which input source the Roku TV defaults to when it turns on.

So if you’re more of a traditional TV watcher, and still use a cable box as your primary viewing method, you can set it as the default. Same with a game console, or Blu-ray player.

With all of these options, you’d think that setting up and changing this feature might be a little complicated, but it’s actually an incredibly simple process.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

TCL 65-inch 6-Series 65R625 Roku TV (From $799.99 at Best Buy)

How to change the default input on a Roku TV

1. Go to the homescreen by pressing the Home button on your Roku TV remote. It’s the button with an image of a house on it, under the power button.

2. In the menu on the left side of the screen, scroll down until you reach the “Settings” option, and select it.

3. Scroll down and select “System.”

4. Scroll down and select “Power.”

5. Select “Power On,” the first option.

6. Choose the input you want your Roku TV to default to when you turn it on. Each input has its own preset name, but actually corresponds to a different HDMI input.

Once you do so, you can press the Home button again. Everything will save automatically.

The next time you turn the Roku TV off and on again, it’ll switch to the new default input.

If you ever need to return to the homescreen, to change it your default input again or simply use your Roku services, just press the Home button on your Roku remote.

The best answer is to get a new remote. Chances are the star button will be used more prevalently. Also if you plan on using Hulu having the back screen button is almost a necessity.

If you don’t want that do a forum search for Remoku or other web based remote interfaces.

Well that’s a sticky situation. Roku has had some special issues for a while now with a lack of buttons. When the box was designed (and the old style remote) it was Netflix only and it had plenty of buttons for that.

As for why the remote isn’t included now, I can’t get into that because I have no idea. When I bought my box the HD’s were the only ones made and they cost 99 dollars. You had to buy them either from Roku or the newly launched Amazon affiliation. That was almost 2 years ago and I promise you I’ve gotten my money’s worth a dozen times over. I didn’t begrudge the 20 bucks (with expedited shipping) one bit. This box has literally become my TV.

Look further down the page though. They also show it with the old remote. Who knows what you’ll actually get then since it’s clearly an HD in both and clearly with both remotes.

First of all, I want to say I love my rokus. I have 3 in my home and set one up for my mother at her home. Where I live, I can get Direct TV and that’s about it. My Rokus have completely replaced any need for cable service.

Of course, there’s always room for improvement, and I have a couple recommendations.

First, the ability to rearrange the channel icons through a website interface would be VERY helpful. I am a channel pack-rat, and currently have 100+ channels on my devices. Re-organizing the icons is a tediously slow task. The ability to do so via computer, to drag and drop them like icons on a desktop, would make this MUCH easier

The ability to create pages with different sets of channels (including having the same one on different pages) would also be nice. In fact, this is an area where you can add parental controls and make pages that are kid-friendly and those that are less so. I envision having a page for my news channels, one for movies, one for music, etc. Maybe handle them like browser tabs? Then, for the parental controls, perhaps lock them down.

On several services, such as Netflix, Disney +, and Hulu, I can have separate profiles. Perhaps having separate profiles on the Roku that are able to automatically select service profiles (obviously this would require adding some kind of hook that the service developer can harness to see which profile is already logged in, and would require them to support the feature – but I’m pretty sure most of the big-names would be interested in this as well.

The ability to remove channels in bulk is also useful. Perhaps going into an “edit mode” where you can check-mark the ones you want to remove and then do so all at once?

Adding Bluetooth connectivity would also be REALLY nice. I’d love to be able to use a bluetooth keyboard instead of the on-screen keyboard option. Yes, the phone app is helpful here, but being able to use a bluetooth keyboard is even better (in fact, there are several low-cost options that you could probably bundle with some systems for an up-charge).

One more idea: informational screens for each channel which can show you info on the channel such as last update, last watched, and a brief description would be nice.

Again, overall I love my Roku devices. I just see lots of room for UI improvements. I know you need to keep ads on the screen, and I have no problem there. But making the system more user-friendly would be a huge benefit to all.

I have a family, and utilize parental controls to control content in our home. However, it is easy for my kids to peruse screensaver options, as well as channel options, whose thumbnails are extremely suggestive and even pornographic. The parental controls will prevent my kids from subscribing from such channels, but their thumbnails are still present. How can I block this?

Thanks for responding. I realize opinions will vary about the propriety of content for young children, but in my case I want to block access to this content and there’s no apparent way for me to do so. Most of it can be found in Screensavers, accessible either via settings or streaming channels. Included here are shots anyone can find when you peruse screensavers, then select a channel (these are from “Premium Sexy Girls” and “Wet T-Shirts”, in case you’re wondering) and select “View Screenshots”.

It’s looking like there’s no way to filter this content. Hoping one of you can prove me wrong on that point.

Well yeah some of the screensavers are a bit racy.

But we were all young at some point and the more kids sense

you dont want them to do something like this they more they will.

As a father I can appreciate your feelings but I think its kinda

harmless fun for them. Its also normal. It could be worse Dad.

Just make it clear you dont want to know about it.

Can I arrange my channels in a specific order?

Re: Can I arrange my channels in a specific order?

Fri Aug 27, 2010 9:51 am

Better organized how ?
By alphabet ? Frequency use ?
And by whom ?
Roku ? or the box owner ?
I would hope down the road the owner could arrange channels in the order they want them in.
Is that going to be possible ? if so when ?

Re: Can I arrange my channels in a specific order?

Lots of devices don’t let you order icons.. The Wii home screen (unless I’m mistaken), the icons on many cell phone menus, Blu-ray players, etc..

Anyway, it’s a moot point anyone because as someone else said, they are looking at re-designing the home screen anyway.

“isnt roku supposed to be innovating?”

Every tech company is “innovating”.. I’d like the Roku to control my garage door, but that doesn’t mean because I ask ten times for it that I’m gonna get it.

would you be willing to pay for it

Yes indeed, that type of “innovating” is bound to cost money. Several people have asked about Parental controls too, maybe they could develop both at the same time to keep the added cost a little lower.

We have clearly heard the feedback on this topic and are considering various options.

I can’t share any information on timing around this, but it is definitely on our to-do list.

Nice try but apples and oranges.
Parental Control would only help a few.
EVERYONE can benefit from an improved channel screen.
And yeah i’ll willing to pay for something that benefits EVERYONE
i’m NOT willing to pay for something that only a SMALL faction of people want.

Certainly not EVERYONE. Right now I could care less about being able to rearrange the channels but I recognize that others do. Therefore if possible ROKU should add the feature and it sounds like they will.

How to rearrange your roku channel icons

Повторете този процес, докато всички канали не са в перфектния ред. Ако сте като мен, организирането на неща, така че те са прави, ще отнеме известно време, но си заслужава. Насладете се, вие сте чист ви измамвам.

If you’re looking to change your screen size you probably want to alter either the resolution, the picture ratio, or both. If that’s the case, you’re in luck. Roku devices are designed to take advantage of modern high-definition resolutions but also older formats commonly used in older-gen smart TVs.

How to rearrange your roku channel icons

In addition, you can easily change the picture size, whether you’re using a Roku streaming device or a Roku smart TV.

Changing the Display with the Remote

Insert batteries in your Roku remote in order to navigate the menu on your Roku device.

  1. Press the Home button on the remote to access the Roku home screen.
  2. Use the arrows to highlight the Settings menu.
  3. Enter the Settings menu and select the Display type option.
How to rearrange your roku channel icons
  4. Use the arrows to select the desired resolution.

You should know that Roku devices do a good job of analyzing the capabilities of your smart TV. By using the Auto Detect feature, your Roku device can scan and set the display resolution to one that should run optimally on your TV.

How to rearrange your roku channel icons

These are the options available on Roku devices:

  1. 720p
  2. 1080p
  3. 4K at 30Hz
  4. 4K at 60Hz
  5. 4K HDR at 30Hz

Resolution Terminology and Common Incompatibility Issues

The 30Hz and 60Hz values represent the framerates of your video playback. 4K HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. This means that your TV should be able to support even higher framerates and additional color information. Note that not many 4K smart TVs will also have 4K HDR support.

If you set your Roku device to a resolution not supported by your TV, you should see a blank screen. However, the device should revert back to its previous valid setting in about 15 seconds.

You should also know that even though your TV may have 4K HDR support, this won’t guarantee that you’ll be able to watch HDR movies right out of the box. In some cases, you may notice that when watching an HDR movie from your Roku stick, the image may have poor quality.

This is often an issue with the TV’s software. Perform an update and try again. If the problem persists, perform a Roku OS update as well. If that doesn’t solve the problem, then either your Roku device or TV is not capable of rendering 4K HDR content.

Changing the Picture Size

If you change the picture size on your TV while you’re using Roku, the change won’t be global. It will only affect the HDMI input currently in use, as in your Roku device.

  1. Press the Star button to access the Settings menu.
  2. Alternatively, go to your Home screen by pressing the Home button on the remote and then use the arrow buttons to get to the Settings menu.
  3. Select the TV picture settings option.
  4. Go to the Options menu.
  5. Select the Advanced picture settings menu.
  6. Go to the Picture size setting near the bottom of the list.
  7. Use the arrow buttons to select a different aspect ratio.

How to rearrange your roku channel icons

Note that you can’t really create a custom aspect ratio, only select a different one from the provided list. But, even though you can change it, it doesn’t always mean that you should.

By using the Auto setting, your Roku device will automatically stretch anything that needs stretching and fit all videos to size, to best utilize your TV’s rendering capabilities.

Other Picture Options You Might be Interested in

From the same advanced picture settings panel, you should be able to access other interesting options. For example, you can customize the brightness, sharpness, color, and contrast of a picture manually, instead of relying on available presets.

On most Roku smart TVs you should also be able to take advantage of the Game Mode picture setting. This is something that can either reduce input lag or enhance image processing rates. Since this feature is strictly available to HDMI inputs, it will also be something you can use for your Roku streams, not just gaming sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my home screen look zoomed in?

This is a common issue it seems but fortunately, there’s an easy fix. When you turn on your Roku device the icons may appear to be enlarged and out of place. If that’s happening to you it’s likely because you need to update the Roku Theme.

Simply head over to Settings and select Theme. Highlight a new theme pack and save the option. Your home screen should appear normal again.

My screen went black after changing my resolution. Why?

If you’ve chosen the force output option and your TV is not capable of handling the new setting, your screen will go back to normal after a few seconds. Unfortunately, this means that the new setting just isn’t compatible with your current television set.

Should You Change the Screen Size?

Unless you’re planning to watch some really old movies in poor formats on your large TV, there shouldn’t be any reason to stretch out your picture size. And even then, stretching rarely makes things better if it’s not done at an appropriate resolution and screen size.

Often times the image can get foggy or pixelated, hence why the automatic picture ratio settings tend to perform best. Do you like customizing your picture size or do you agree that Roku devices can do a good job on their own most of the time?
