How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

There are many backup software on the market and some of them does a really good job in making sure that there is an exact copy of the important files available at the backup drive. Although backing up of files is important, many people forget to backup the Windows product key or third party software license that is installed on their computer. When their computer crashes and had to reinstall everything from scratch, they had to go through the trouble of searching for the license number to activate the software that they’ve purchased. If the license key are misplaced and forgotten, they’d have to contact the software support team and provide them with proof of purchase so that they can reissue the license.

The problem is software licenses aren’t stored in one standard location where you can just copy the whole folder to backup and then paste it back to reactivate all the software. They are stored all over the place either in a form of an external file or a registry key. Fortunately we found 10 software that can scan your computer and recover the lost or forgotten product key licenses so you can back it up in case you need to reactivate them again. Computer technicians can also use these software to help customers recover their software license numbers from non-bootable drive.

How to Recover Keys From a Separate Hard Drive

If you have a computer that won’t boot, you can recover its keys as long as the hard drive still works. You just need to remove the drive, connect it to a functional computer, and point ProduKey at it.

If you’d like to do this, you’ll need to shut down the broken computer, open it up, and remove its internal drive. This will be easier on some computers than others—for example, many laptops aren’t designed to be easily opened, while desktops generally are.

You can then insert the drive into an internal drive bay on a working computer, or use an SATA hard drive docking station, like the one shown below.

Lastly, if you can’t—or just don’t want to—physically remove the drive from the first computer, you could instead use a Linux live USB drive to copy the files from that drive, and then examine them with ProduKey on another computer. Generally, we think it’s easier to just remove the drive, but this will work as an alternative.

To do this, you’ll first need to create yourself a live Linux drive. For example, you can create a Ubuntu drive. To do this, you’ll need to download a Ubuntu ISO and download the Rufus tool for Windows.

Warning: The USB drive you turn into a live Linux drive will be erased. Back up any important files on it first.

Once you have both, connect a USB drive and launch Rufus. Select your USB drive, pick the FAT32 file system, and check the “Create a bootable disk using” box. Click the button to the right of it and select the Ubuntu ISO image you downloaded.

When the disk is created, you can connect the USB drive to your broken computer and boot from it. You may just need to insert the drive, boot it up, and the computer will start from the USB drive. Or, you may have to tweak the boot order or use a boot options menu.

When Ubuntu boots, open a file manager window by clicking the drive icon on the panel. Locate your Windows drive and navigate to C:\Windows\system32\ . Right-click the “config” folder and select “Copy”. Connect another external USB drive to your computer and copy the config folder to it.

Steps to Recover Keys From a Working Computer

  1. Download the ProduKey file from this page and run the ProduKey.exe (i.e. product key.exe) document. You’ll see the product key for your Windows establishment and different applications introduced on your framework, including Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, and some Adobe and Autodesk products. How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one
  2. In the event that your PC accompanies a Windows 10 or 8 enter installed in its UEFI firmware, it will be shown as a “Windows (BIOS OEM Key)” here. This key is put away on your PC’s motherboard and Windows will naturally utilize it at whatever point you introduced Windows on your PC. You don’t have to back it up or record it.

Steps to Recover Keys From a Separate Hard Drive:

  1. On the off chance that you have a PC that won’t boot, you can recuperate its keys the length of the hard drive still works. You simply need to evacuate the drive, interface it to a utilitarian PC, and point Product Key at it.
  2. On the off chance that you’d get a kick out of the chance to do this, you’ll have to close down the broken PC, open it up, and expel its interior drive. This will be less demanding on a few PCs than others—for instance, numerous portable PCs aren’t intended to be effectively opened, while desktops by and large are.
  3. You can then embed the crash into an inside drive sound on a working PC, or utilize an SATA hard drive docking station, similar to the one demonstrated as follows. By and large, we believe it’s less demanding to simply expel the drive, however, this will fill in as an option.
  2. To do this, you’ll initially need to make yourself a live Linux drive. For instance, you can make a Ubuntu drive. To do this, you’ll have to download a Ubuntu ISO and download the Rufus device for Windows.
Warning: The USB drive you turn into a live Linux drive will be erased. Back up any important files on it first.
  3. When you have both, interface a USB drive and dispatch Rufus. Select your USB drive, pick the FAT32 record framework, and check the “Make a bootable circle utilizing” box. Tap the catch to one side of it and select the Ubuntu ISO picture you downloaded.
  4. Click “Start” and consent to download the Syslinux programming. Select “Write in ISO picture mode (Recommended)” and consent to wipe the information on the plate when you’re inquired.
  5. At the point when the plate is made, you can associate the USB drive to your broken PC and boot from it. You may simply need to embed the drive, boot it up, and the PC will begin from the USB drive. On the other hand, you may need to change the boot request or utilize a boot choices menu.
  6. When Ubuntu boots, open a file manager window by clicking the drive icon on the panel. Locate your Windows drive and navigate to C:\Windows\system32\ .

Wouldn’t it be nice to avoid dealing with crashed computers?
This article will help recover from the crash that already happened, but in the future – you can avoid the hassle by using a self-recovering backup – available here.

The process uses an automatic computer rescue software, so it does not require a lot of technical knowledge for a successful recovery. You can use this tutorial in the following scenarios:

  • Your computer won’t turn on at all or has a hardware failure, such as a fried motherboard, broken screen or graphics card
  • Your computer won’t boot or load Windows properly
  • You have Windows malfunctions that you can’t repair and want to switch to a new system

Fortunately, if your hard drive is not completely dead, you can recover not just files, but even your settings and programs to a new computer. Read on to find out how.

Already have the old hard drive connected to the new computer, and just need a way to recover programs and files from it?
Great! All you need to do is run Zinstall Migration Kit Pro on the computer, and it will recover everything from the drive, even programs.
Get the software here.

Video tutorial – how to recover programs, settings and files from a dead computer

Get the hard drive out of the broken computer and connect to replacement PC

The first step in rescuing programs and data from a broken computer is take out its hard drive, and connect it to a replacement computer. Let’s see how to do that.

First, take the old drive out of the broken PC:

  1. Disconnect the machine from power, and if it is a laptop – remove the battery.
  2. In a desktop computer, open the case, and you will see the drive on the front side.
  3. In a laptop computer, you will probably see a dedicated flap for accessing the hard drive, which you can open by removing a few screws.
  4. Disconnect the hard drive from the cables that go into it, and take it out.

Now that you have the hard drive, you need to connect it to the new computer. There are several ways to do this:

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

  1. You can use a USB hard drive enclosure, which is a special “box”-like device that you slide the old drive into. The enclosure then connects to the new computer via a simple USB.
  2. You can also use a USB hard drive adapter, which is a cable-like device, connecting to the hard drive on one end and to a USB in the new computer on the other.
  3. If the new computer is a desktop, you can also connect the old drive as a secondary internal drive, just as the one already in the new computer.

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

Once the old drive is connected to the new computer, in any of the ways above, you should be able to view the old files. At that point, you can proceed to the recovery stage.

Recover your files, settings, profile and programs from the broken computer’s hard drive

At this stage, you can access the old files on the new computer. This already a big step forward! You can look for the files you need, and manually copy them to the new PC. This type of manual recovery is not the easiest job to do, but it will at least get you your files back.

Fortunately, there are tools to do an automatic recovery, completely and easy. The one we’ll use – called Zinstall Migration Kit Pro – will even recover your programs, and of course emails, personalization, settings, documents and all the rest. Plus, it’s automatic and you won’t have to hunt everything down manually. Let’s see how.

If you’re a computer technician or the neighborhood tech geek, quite frequently you could find yourself having to reinstall Windows for people. One very common and annoying problem that often arises is the user doesn’t have their Windows license to hand and you have to spend time in retrieving the genuine Windows product key from the system if the hard drive is readable. A big pain these days is Windows product key stickers on many machines such as laptops and netbooks are paper and don’t have the plastic protective coating meaning the key can easily become faint and impossible to read accurately.

There are a few ways to retrieve a key from an unbootable computer and most of them involve having access to another working computer. For example, taking out the hard drive and attaching it to a working machine, running a tool that can read product keys, load the registry hive from within the program and retrieve the product key. Or you can boot up PCRegedit, load the registry and then decrypt the key from a working computer. All those steps work but are a bit fiddly and time consuming.

We’ve tried very hard to look for a linux live CD that can retrieve the license key but couldn’t find an obvious one that doesn’t involve a long process. But thankfully there are other ways you can do this by using very popular Live Windows CD’s that can get the key from a Windows system that cannot boot.

Special Note: An important thing which needs mentioning is there are 2 different types of Windows product key you might have installed on your system. If you have an OEM machine made by a manufacturer such as Dell, Sony, Asus etc, and have never re-installed Windows, your product key will be different. This is a special generic key pre-installed at the factory and is NOT the same key as the one on a genuine sticker and cannot be used on a standard Windows re-install. If your key is from a sticker or has been typed in manually, these methods will work fine.

Method One

The first tool to try and recover your Windows product key is Lazesoft Recover My Password Home Edition. It’s a relatively new program released in 2012 (the Home ed.), and is designed specifically to do 2 things; recover your Windows product key from any version of Windows including Windows 2000 right up to Windows 8, and secondly it can reset passwords from local administrator and domain accounts. It’s also about as easy to use as you could expect this type of recovery task to get.

1. Download Recover My Password Home Edition and install the program. More experienced users can extract the installer and make the program portable with Universal Extractor.

2. Start Recover My Password and press “Burn Bootable CD/USB Disk Now”, then click Next.

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

3. On the media selection screen you can choose to either burn the Recover My Password WinPE image straight to CD, write onto USB flash drive, or save it as an ISO file for writing out later. Press Commit when you have inserted the media or chosen an ISO save location. Depending on your system, some files will automatically download from Microsoft.com that are part of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) to help create the image.

4. When it’s finished, close the program and boot the computer you want to retrieve the key from with the CD or USB drive. Press enter at the Boot menu or let the 30 second timer countdown.

5. At the welcome screen click on the big drop down menu at the top and select “Find Windows Product Key”. If you have special third party drivers which are needed to recognize your drives, they can also be loaded from here. Click Next and then confirm in the popup you are using the program for non commercial use only.

6. Now Lazesoft Recover My Password will search for and then display the Windows product key(s) for your system. The good thing is the program will automatically search all active Windows partitions you have on the system, and will show all the Windows product keys it comes across.

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

Lazesoft Recover My Password Home Edition is quite an impressive tool and seemed to work flawlessly on every system we tested it on. It’s also not architecture or Windows version specific so you can easily create the CD on Windows XP 32-bit and it will retrieve the keys on Windows 7 or 8 64-bit installs without any trouble.

Method Two

This second method uses the wildly popular Hirens Boot CD and an included utility from Nirsoft called Produkey which can retrieve Windows and also Office keys from a an offline Windows system.

1. Download Hirens Boot CD if you don’t already have it and burn to a CD, or if you want to, put Hiren on a USB stick.

2. Boot the CD or USB, choose the Mini XP option and wait for the Windows desktop to load.

3. Click on the Hiren menu in the system tray and navigate to Passwords / Keys -> Product Keys -> ProduKey (Windows Key Viewer).

Have you purchased a new Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 PC and want to reinstall the operating system now? Do you want to legally download Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft but can’t find the product key on your PC?

Those of you have purchased a PC pre-installed with Windows 8 or later version of Windows probably have noticed that OEMs have stopped pasting “Proof of license. Certificate of Authenticity” sticker at the back of the PC which usually includes Windows product key. OEMs are now embedding the product key into the BIOS/UEFI instead and isn’t easily visible.

Even though this is a good way to combat piracy, and in most cases, Windows 8/8.1 setup automatically reads the product key while reinstalling the operating system, PC users who need the product key to download Windows ISO from Microsoft to reinstall the OS or for other reasons need to recover the product key from the firmware first.

Luckily, there are a couple of free tools out there to help you recover Windows product key from the BIOS/UEFI.

Windows 8 Product Key Viewer is a little tool developed to recover Windows 8/8.1 product key from BIOS/UEFI as well as hard drive. In short, you can use this tool to retrieve Windows product key on a PC preinstalled with Windows 8/8.1, and also, if you have installed Windows 8/8.1 on a newly assembled computer.

Method 1:

View Windows 8/8.1 product key saved in BIOS/UEFI

Step 1: Head over to this page and download Windows 8 Product Key Viewer.

Step 2: Run the program and check the option labelled MSDM key to view your genuine program key.

And if Windows 8/8.1 wasn’t bundled with your PC and you manually installed it later, you can view the product key by unchecking MSDM Key box. That’s it!

Method 2:

If Windows 8/8.1 was preinstalled on your PC, you can try out a free script named Get_Win8Key as well. It reads the product key from the device firmware and is easy to use as well.

Step 1: Visit this page and download the script. Extract the zip file package to get the script file.

Step 2: Double-click on the file to execute it and view the license key.

Method 3:

And if you want to recover the product key from Windows Registry, try out ProduKey from NirSoft. Just like Windows 8 Product Key Viewer, Nirsoft’s ProduKey is a portable tool designed to recover Windows product key.

A Windows product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. It looks like this:

PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Locate your product key for Windows 10 or Windows 11

Depending on how you got your copy of Windows 10 or Windows 11, you’ll need either a 25-character product key or a digital license to activate it. A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 10, Version 1511) is a method of activation in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that doesn’t require you to enter a product key. Without one of these, you won’t be able to activate your device.

Where to find your product key depends on how you got your copy of Windows.

Select any of the following to see more information:

The product key is preinstalled on your PC, included with the packaging the PC came in, or included on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the PC. For more info, contact your hardware manufacturer, and for pictures of authentic product keys and COA labels, see How to tell your hardware is genuine.

The product key is on a label or card inside the box that Windows came in. For more info, contact the retailer that sold you Windows 10 or Windows 11. How to tell your software is genuine.

Find your product key in the confirmation email you received after buying Windows 10 or Windows 11 in a digital locker accessible through the retailer’s website.

The product key is in the confirmation email you received after buying your digital copy of Windows. Microsoft only keeps a record of product keys if you purchased from the Microsoft online store. You can find out if you purchased from Microsoft in your Microsoft account Order history.

If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you should have a digital license instead of a product key.

If you bought Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro upgrade in the Microsoft Store app, you’ll receive a digital license instead of a product key in the confirmation email that was sent to confirm the purchase. That email address (MSA) will contain the digital license. You can use the digital license for activation.

For more information about digital licenses and product keys in Windows 10 and Windows 11, see the “Methods of Activation” section in Activate Windows.

Your product key is available through the web portal for your program. For more information, see Volume Activation for Windows 10.

Locate your product key for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

A product key is usually required when uninstalling or reinstalling Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Generally, if you bought a physical copy of Windows, the product key should be on a label or card inside the box that Windows came in. If Windows came preinstalled on your PC, the product key should appear on a sticker on your device. If you’ve lost or can’t find the product key, contact the manufacturer. To ensure your product key is genuine, see How to tell your software is genuine and How to tell your hardware is genuine.

Most pieces of commercial software come with some form of protection to deter unauthorized copying and installation. Although software makers use different methods to achieve this goal, one common approach involves asking the user to type in a product key or serial number, which is the case for both Microsoft Windows and Office.

This string of letters and/or numbers is a unique identifier that the software decodes to verify that your copy is legal. It’s required to authorize the software’s installation and your eligibility for product support, so it’s important to know where it is and how to access it.

Here are some easy ways to find your product key for both Windows and Office.

Find your product key

Try to remember how you purchased your Microsoft software, which determines where you need to look to find the product key.

If you bought a retail copy of Microsoft Windows or Office, the first place to look is in the disc jewel case. Retail Microsoft product keys are usually on a bright sticker located inside the case with the CD/DVD, or on the back. The key consists of 25 alphanumeric characters, usually split into groups of five.

If your computer came preloaded with Microsoft Windows, the software product key is usually on a multicolored, Microsoft-branded sticker on your PC case. For Microsoft Office, you can find the sticker on the installation disc that accompanied the computer. If all else fails, you will need to contact Microsoft to obtain a replacement key.

Windows 10

With Windows 10 Microsoft introduced a new method for authenticating the operating system called a digital entitlement, but it doesn’t apply to all Windows 10 PCs.

Basically, you have a digital entitlement if you upgraded your PC from Windows 7 or 8.1 for free. You will also have a digital entitlement if you paid for a Windows 10 upgrade via the Windows Store, or did a fresh install of Windows 10 and then paid for it via the Windows Store.

If, however, you obtained Windows 10 by buying a new PC, buying a Windows 10 installation DVD, or buying a digital copy of Windows 10 from a retailer that’s not the Windows Store then you have a traditional product key, not a digital entitlement.

What a digital entitlement means

If your PC has a digital entitlement, Microsoft keeps a record of your right to run Windows 10 on its servers. The good thing about this system is there’s no product key to lose. If you ever need to do a fresh install from a USB drive, for example, you will not have to activate your PC. Instead, after the reinstall Windows will activate seamlessly in the background within a few hours (or at worst a few days).

The one thing to keep in mind is that your digital entitlement is based around your system configuration. If you change too many components at once and then try to reinstall Windows 10 you may run into problems. This is a rare issue, but it’s something to keep in mind if you are planning on swapping out your hard drive or SSD and hope to do some other upgrades at the same time.

It would be better, for example, to do the HDD to SSD swap first, reinstall Windows 10, and once it’s activated take care of the other component upgrades. Otherwise, you might be putting in a call to Microsoft’s robo-activation line.

That said, major upgrades like swapping out your motherboard are almost certainly guaranteed to require a call to Microsoft for activation.

Extract your key from Microsoft Windows or Office

If you can’t find your key but the software is installed, you can use a program such as the Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder. This utility can quickly locate your Windows key (along with the keys for many other installed programs) and display it for you.

  1. Download Magical Jelly Bean and follow the installation process to install it on your computer.
  2. Launch the program. You can find it by opening the Start menu, typing keyfinder, and pressing Enter.
  3. The program will scan your installations and find the product keys of supported programs, including various versions of Windows and Microsoft Office.
  4. When the scan is complete, the tool will display a window with entries in the left pane for whatever installed versions of Windows and Office it detected.
  5. Click the entry for your version of Microsoft Windows to reveal the key and other information about the installation. The key will be listed under ‘CD Key’ on the right side of the window. Record this information in case you need to reference it in the future. Make sure to record the information exactly, as the key will not work otherwise. Do not confuse this with the ‘Product ID’ entry, which is unneeded.
  6. Click the entry for your version of Microsoft Office to reveal the key and other information about that installation. The same advice goes for Office: Your key will be listed under ‘CD Key’ on the right side of the window. Record this information exactly, as the key will not work otherwise. Use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to extract the CD keys for software you currently have installed.

Method 4. Use Third-party Software to Find Windows 10 Product Key

If your product key on Windows 10 is lost or misplaced, all the above methods will fail to work. For this situation, we recommend you use professional software like PassFab Product Key Recoveryto find the product key.

Step 1. Download and install this program, and then launch it to get its main interface.

Step 2. Click Get Key. Then this tool will search all the product keys on your computer including Windows installation, Microsoft Office and etc.

Right now, we have shared 4 methods to find product key for Windows 10. You can try one of them.

She has helped users fix various problems like PS4 corrupted disk, unexpected store exception error, the green screen of death error, etc. If you are searching for methods to optimize your storage device and restore lost data from different storage devices, then Ariel can provide reliable solutions for these issues.

We’re proud to introduce the immediate release of our newest utility for Windows users: the NeoSmart Technologies Embedded Product Key Tool. Designed for users of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10, our embedded product key tool will retrieve and display the Windows setup product key embedded in the BIOS or EFI, allowing you to store it for safe-keeping or use it to reinstall Windows with an official Windows setup image.

Are you having trouble with your Windows?
Before you reinstall, have you considered using a custom boot repair CD that might be able to save you the hassle of a format and reinstall? Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows can fix your non-booting PC with just one click, without losing any of your data!

Ever since Windows 8, PCs and laptops no longer ship with the Windows Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that we’ve all become accustomed to seeing:

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

So how do you install Windows without a product key? Well, these days a product key unique to your machine (or, in some cases, to your manufacturer or make/model) is embedded into the BIOS or EFI, basically programmed into the computer itself. This prevents problems with the COA being rendered illegible, making situations like this a thing of the past:

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

However, the real reason computers and laptops no longer ship with COAs is because the manufacturers complained to Microsoft that having to affix a customized sticker to each and every PC or laptop they manufacture was a real (and expensive) pain in the royal you-know-what, and begged and pleaded for another option. It’s simple economics, the more-easily you can mass-produce a product with as little variations as possible, the cheaper and faster it is to make it. Microsoft capitulated, and the rest, as they say, is history.

This embedded product key is not wiped when you format or reinstall, or when you replace your hard disk – it’s stored in the NVRAM of the BIOS/EFI on the motherboard itself. Depending on what version of the Windows setup image you’re using, it might be able to retrieve the key for itself – in which case you’ll never be prompted to enter your key. It’ll just directly read the programmed code from the BIOS and continue on its merry way. However, if you’re trying to install Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 and you don’t have a COA because your manufacturer is using an embedded product key but your setup image doesn’t support it, or if you’re trying to retrieve your key for safe-keeping or other purposes, our product key tool will retrieve and display it for you, without even a single click:

So the next time you go crawling under the desk looking for a product key to copy down (or snap a photo of), don’t worry too much when you don’t find one: just download our product key utility (it’s free!) and use it to get a copy of your embedded product key.

Product keys for Windows 8 computers aren’t printed on a sticker. They’re encrypted in the BIOS. How might that affect you?

Lance Whitney is a freelance technology writer and trainer and a former IT professional. He’s written for Time, CNET, PCMag, and several other publications. He’s the author of two tech books–one on Windows and another on LinkedIn.

Windows 8 PCs now embed their product keys in the BIOS, a move that offers both pros and cons.

In the past, a new Windows PC would display its product key on a sticker, usually on the side of a desktop and on the base or the bottom of the battery compartment on a laptop. But with Windows 8, Microsoft has switched gears and now stores and encrypts the key in the BIOS instead.

A response to a question on Microsoft’s Answers Web site confirmed the details earlier this month:

One of the improvements Microsoft is making to Activation 3.0 for newly built machines that come preloaded with Windows 8, you won’t have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker attached to the machine anymore. Instead, this will be embedded in the BIOS. This will avoid product keys from being compromised and OEMs will buy what they need.

So if you need to reset or reinstall Windows 8, you don’t need to hunt for the product key. It’s automatically applied and activated. That’s certainly a plus, especially when the numbers on those product key stickers wear out or are just too small to easily read.

Microsoft certainly benefits from this new activation process since a Windows 8 product key embedded on one PC seemingly can’t be used on another.

But therein lies the problem for the user.

Let’s say you own a new PC running the standard version of Windows 8. And you own a standalone (aka a System Builder) edition of Windows 8 Pro with its own product key. You then install Windows 8 Pro on your PC. Will Windows insist on using the embedded product key, or is there a workaround so you can manually enter the key that came with your Windows 8 Pro System Builder software.

Or, let’s say your current Windows 8 PC dies and you need to replace the motherboard or install the OS on a totally different working computer. How can you do that if the product key is locked to the dead PC’s original BIOS?

A couple of people posed those same questions on the Microsoft Answers page but have yet to receive answers.

Further, the product key itself is embedded and encrypted in the BIOS. So even if you boot into the BIOS, you won’t find the key as an entry that you can simply write down. As the Microsoft rep on the Answers page noted, you can view the full Windows product key using a third-party utility, such as Belarc Advisor, Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, or ProduKey. But that key is still tied to its original machine.

I tried the process myself, grabbing the product key from a Windows 8 PC using Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and applying it to a different computer. And Windows would not accept it.

Microsoft lays out your options
So what can users do? In an e-mail to CNET, a Microsoft spokesperson outlined some options for people who find themselves in one of the scenarios described above.

First, if you buy a PC with the standard version of Windows 8, you can upgrade it to Windows 8 Pro. But for now, Microsoft and other retailers are only selling the physical media for the Windows 8 Pro Pack, which would run you $69.99.

Microsoft does offer an upgrade option to Windows 8 Pro for Windows 7, Vista, and XP users . That upgrade sells for $39.99. It’s available for for $14.99 until the end of January, but only for recent Windows 7 PC buyers. ZDNet’s Ed Bott found that the Windows 8 Pro upgrade key for a PC running an earlier version of Windows will also upgrade a PC running the standard version of Windows 8.

So you can use your Windows 7, Vista, or XP computer to buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade key and apply that to your standard Windows 8 PC, an option that would cover the first scenario.

It’s also important to note that Microsoft does not currently offer a full retail edition of Windows 8 in the same way that prior versions of Windows were available as full retail packages. The only standalone (non-upgrade) edition of Windows 8 available is the System Builder edition. This edition is designed more for original equipment manufacturers and hobbyists building their own PCs from scratch. So it’s not a product the average user would likely purchase in the first place.

What about the second scenario? Your Windows 8 PC dies, and you need to reinstall Windows or transfer the license to another PC. The Microsoft rep explained the process as follows:

The OEM license is actually non-transferable to another PC. When you buy a PC preinstalled with Windows, that version of Windows is only licensed for that PC and cannot be transferred to a new PC. The transfer of the license must accompany the PC it was licensed for. If the customer were able to get that machine fixed, they would simply need to call customer support to re-activate if there were changes big enough to merit PC reset or system recovery unusable.

So that option would cover a motherboard replacement. But what if the dead PC couldn’t be revived and you wanted to install Windows 8 on another PC? You’d be out of luck.

The version of Windows 8 that comes pre-installed on an OEM machine is not transferrable between PCs, according to the Microsoft rep. “So if your PC was really put out to pasture, under the terms of the license agreement, you could not use backup discs to reinstall that license on another PC,” she explained.

  • Hi guys, bit of a problem. I have a machine that was running win7, a couple of weeks back I upgraded for free to win 10 but today the hard drive has failed. I don’t have any record of the product key so I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to install and activate windows again.

Is there any way of retrieving a product key from a dead drive? I’ve tried accessing the drive from another computer and it spins up then stops.

  • Windows 10 activates by your hardware. If you are going to reinstall windows 10 you may need to contact microsoft. If you are looking for the key for window 7 it should be on the side of the computer. If this is a retail computer.

KeyFinder | Magical Jelly Bean This may help you with win 7 If you buy chance get the hard drive to work long enough to get your key.

  • Have you ever heard of the hard drive freezer trick? It might work long enough to let you retrieve your key. Make sure you place the hard drive in a sealed plastic bag to keep out moisture.

BTW, even though it is self built you still are supposed to put the product key sticker on the case somewhere. Needless to say that would have avoided the present situation, unless, of course, your Windows is pirated.

  • I’ve heard of it but was hoping to keep it as a very last resort. I made a short video of the issue here:

My new laptop came preinstalled with Windows 8. Naively, as I am, I just formatted the harddrive and installed fine old Ubuntu. Now I want to install Windows 8 for dual boot again, but I have no DVD and do download the ISO one needs a product key. That key is not on the back of the laptop anymore but somewhere on the mainboard.

Is there any way to recover the product key from the mainboard using Ubuntu?

Another way that doesn’t require looking through a ton of output is:

acpidump dumps the table (default in hexdump format), but the -b options tells it to output the raw data. Since we only need the last part of the table, pipe the output into dd, but but skip the unnecessary junk. Finally, add an echo at the end to make it terminal-friendly =D

acpidump -t MSDM will work as well, but the key is broken over multiple lines, making it hard to copy.

    Update thanks to Lekensteyn:

New versions of acpidump shipped with Ubuntu work differently than described above. The -b flag causes acpidump to write to a file under all circumstances, so an alternative method is to use the command

A legitimate Windows 8 installer should automatically detect the key in the ACPI and continue installing with the built-in key.

It should be noted, however, that I used this method to try to install Win8 in a VM using my own product key, but it automatically deactivated saying that the product key was in use. So, it’s of little use in all reality. Since Win8 OEM keys are designed to be tied to that specific computer, you’ll hit a brick wall if you ask Microsoft to unregister the key so you can use it in a VM, let alone another computer.

The only way you could use the key is if you had never booted into Win8 to begin with or weren’t connected to a network when you did. Even so, if your VM/new computer is ever allowed to connect to the network, it will automatically register the key making your actual installation unusable.

If you have important data trapped on a computer that’s not working, there are ways to recover it. You should already have a backup, but here’s what you can do in an emergency.

Troubleshooting a computer that won’t start is frustrating, but the panic of losing your data is far worse. If you can’t get your computer to boot and you don’t have a backup, don’t freak out just yet; you have a few options.

There’s always a possibility your hard drive is corrupted or dead, in which case data recovery is going to be costly or impossible. But in many cases, your computer may not boot for other reasons: a failing power supply, a corrupted boot sector, or any other number of quirks that leave your photos, documents, and other files intact.

If that data is still salvageable, there are two primary ways I recommend retrieving that data. One requires a little software know-how, while the other requires a little hardware finesse. Both methods will require an external drive to copy the data on to, which you can use to store your files while you repair or replace your computer. Don’t fret if you aren’t super experienced; you can handle this as long as you follow the instructions closely.

    Boot From a USB Drive

It’s possible your computer’s hardware is still in good working order, but can’t boot into Windows. Maybe the bootloader is corrupted, or maybe driver issues are giving you a black screen rather than the familiar Windows desktop. If the computer still works, though, you can use it to boot into a different environment that can (hopefully) access your data.

If you’re using a Windows PC, you can create a bootable USB drive with Windows on it to browse your hard drive. Grab another PC and a USB drive with at least 16GB of space. Go to Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool and download the installation media. Windows 10 users should go here (Opens in a new window) , while Windows 11 users can go here (Opens in a new window) . Run the downloaded .exe file and select Create installation media, then choose ISO file when prompted and save the file onto the drive.

Now, download Rufus (Opens in a new window) and start it up. Select your USB drive under Device, your Windows ISO under Boot Selection, and Windows To Go under Image Option. Click Start, and wait for the process to finish. You can see more details in the “Create Drive With Rufus” section of this guide. If you’re using a Mac, here’s how to make a recovery drive for it.

When it’s done, reboot your computer. At the startup screen, press a key on your keyboard to enter the boot menu—usually it’ll tell you which key on-screen. For example, on my computer, I have to press F11 at the startup screen to access the boot menu, from which I can choose my USB drive to boot into its Windows environment.

If that doesn’t work, you can also enter the BIOS setup—usually by pressing Delete or F2. Look for the “Boot Order” section, where you can move your USB drive to the top of the list. If all goes well, your computer will boot you into a fresh Windows environment from that USB drive.

Open File Explorer and your hard drive should appear there, with all your data intact (provided your drive isn’t corrupted). Note that if your hard drive is encrypted with BitLocker (Opens in a new window) , you’ll need the recovery key in order to access your data—without it, your files are likely gone forever.

Once you see your data, just plug in a different external drive and drag all your important files to it. From there, you can safely reset Windows or troubleshoot boot problems without worrying about your precious data.

Remove the Hard Drive and Try It In Another PC

If your computer won’t turn on at all, you won’t be able to boot from a USB drive as described above. You can, however, remove the hard drive from the computer and plug it into another working machine to access your data. To do this, you’ll need a SATA-to-USB cable (Opens in a new window) , docking station (Opens in a new window) , or external hard drive enclosure (Opens in a new window) —plus a screwdriver and whatever other tools are necessary to open your PC.

For laptops that use an M.2 drive instead of a standard 2.5-inch drive, you’ll need a SATA M.2-to–USB adapter (Opens in a new window) , or an NVMe M.2-to-USB adapter (Opens in a new window) . You may need to look up the specs of your laptop to see what drive it uses. (The pictures on Amazon will often show which types of drives it’s compatible with, and you can look up a disassembly video for your computer to see if the hard drive matches the shape of the enclosure you’re buying.)

Finding the right adapter is, honestly, the most difficult part of this process. Opening your PC seems scary, but it’s actually much easier. We can’t guide you through the process on every machine, but you can usually search your laptop’s model number to find disassembly instructions. It almost always involves unscrewing a few screws on the bottom of the laptop and removing the bottom case, which should give you direct access to the hard drive or SSD.

You’ve Lost a File, Now What?

Nothing can make you feel more helpless than trying to rescue a file from a failing PC, Mac, or external drive. Maybe it’s the trove of family photos that suddenly can’t be found in its folder, or the important documents you scanned and saved as PDFs to a now-failing hard drive. Whatever the case, you’ll do anything—anything—to get those files back. Relax; you don’t have to offer up your firstborn or a kidney to do so. A Data recovery utility may be just the solution you need to get you out of the pickle you find yourself in.

What Can Data Recovery Software Can Do?

Data recovery software can be almost miraculously useful in some situations, and entirely useless in others. The best of the file-recovery apps that we reviewed make it effortless to recover files from traditional spinning hard drives, flash drives, SD cards, and other forms of portable storage, including your phone. They can also retrieve some or all of the data that you otherwise can’t access on a failing CD or DVD disk. What they can’t do—because no consumer-level software can do it—is recover a file that you deleted from the solid-state drive (SSD) that’s probably in your laptop if you bought it in the past year or so, and possibly in your desktop if it’s also of recent vintage. For SSD data recovery, you’ll need to send your disk to a recovery lab; more on that below. Many of the apps we reviewed have both Windows and Mac versions, and they may be priced slightly differently.

Where data recovery software is most useful is when you mistakenly formatted a thumb drive or a media card without remembering to grab the files already stored there, or if you mistakenly deleted files from your phone. This is the kind of mishap that can happen to anyone. Advanced users often get overeager about emptying the Recycle Bin, and want to get back files they didn’t intend to delete forever. If you’re using a traditional spinning hard drive, the best recovery software can restore those lost files. A few advanced users—you know who you are—have even deleted whole disk partitions by mistake when performing housekeeping on their hard disks. Again, with a traditional spinning hard drive, recovery software can bring it back in one piece.

All these apps offer to recover lost or deleted files. Some include the ability to make a disk image (or full clone) of a drive so that you can try to recover files from the image or clone instead of from the disk itself. This is an essential feature if you’re trying to recover files from a disk that’s physically failing, and may continue to fail if your recovery software keeps trying to read from it.

Some data recovery apps also include the opposite of file recovery—permanent file deletion. When you want to make sure that no one can retrieve your data, you can tell these apps to overwrite the data with enough random bytes to make the original data unreadable. Keep in mind that government agencies have tools that can retrieve data from almost anything, but these apps make it impractical even for expert thieves to recover private information from stolen or discarded disk drives.

Where Software Fails, Labs May Succeed

Several of the data recovery apps we reviewed come from companies that offer laboratory-based data recovery services—always at a high price. If you can’t recover data from your drive with an app, then you can consider getting it recovered by an in-lab service. All of these services claim to recover data even from SSDs. We haven’t tested these claims, but all these services won’t charge you unless they actually retrieve your data, so it may be worth looking into them in case of real emergencies. Those services—Kroll, Prosoft, and Seagate—that offer mail-in recovery labs are noted in the table above, and you can read about the details of the particular offerings in the full reviews of those services.

    A Caveat About SSDs

One failing that bothered us in all these apps—including our top picks—is that they didn’t even warn us that we couldn’t recover files from an SSD. It’s easy for an app to tell whether a drive uses spinning-platter or SSD technology, and easy to tell whether TRIM technology is active in a drive. All of the software we reviewed, both on the Mac and PC, misleadingly told us that they were able to recover deleted files from SSDs—and then disappointed us by providing corrupt and unusable files instead of the ones we wanted. We hope that the next generation of data recovery software is redesigned to make it clear that we can’t hope for file recovery on SSDs unless the deleted files are safely in the Recycle Bin—where, of course, they’re easy to find without using recovery software.

The reason that data recovery software can’t recover data from SSDs is simple. Virtually all current SSDs use so-called TRIM technology that increases efficiency and disk life by clearing disk sectors that are not being used. One result of this is that the data can’t be recovered by software, even if the file system retains its record of the sectors where the data used to be. With traditional spinning hard drives and USB flash drives, file recovery is relatively simple. Recovery software can find the location of a file’s data even if you’ve emptied the Recycle Bin, often even if you’ve reformatted the disk. But once a file is deleted from an SSD, and the Recycle Bin has been emptied, there’s no hope of ever getting that file back again, unless you have a backup somewhere.

Which Data Recovery Software Do You Need?

We found two Editors’ Choice data recovery apps for Windows: Kroll Ontrack EasyRecovery and Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery . Ontrack was the best performer in our tests, very slightly outclassing Stellar Phoenix in the number of files it recovered, but Stellar Phoenix has by far the best interface of anything we tried. On the Mac side Alsoft DiskWarrior is an Editors’ Choice, for its ability to rebuild entire Mac directories. Prosoft Data Rescue is an excellent choice for getting back the odd document or spreadsheet that you accidentally deleted from your Mac.

Lost data can cause financial problems and emotional heartache. You probably have hundreds of photos and sound files that you can’t bear to lose. A reliable backup system is the best option, but data recovery software is the second-best, and sometimes the only, choice available. Look into our suggestions now, so you’ll be ready if disaster strikes.

Once you’ve got your files back, you’ll want to regularly back up your work. Our roundups of the Best External Hard Drives, the Best Backup Software, and the Best Cloud Backup Services are good places to start.

This is an old thread, but I ran into this issue and the way to fix it is as follows:

You have to be able to access the hard drive you migrated from.
Make sure all Office programs are closed.

On the new hard drive/computer you migrated to, delete the following file:

Go to the HD you had a working copy on, and copy that same file from the same location to the new HD.

It should have an older date from when you installed it and activated it.

Depending on where you bought Office 2011, you can retrieve the product key from Microsoft using the instructions on their website.

If this doesn’t work for you (ie. you probably don’t own a legitimate copy of the program) I’m afraid you’re out of luck, I believe the licensing information may be stored in the com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist file which is located in

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

You may have installed some programs and decide to uninstall certain ones. Actually, there are some entries in the Windows Registry. How to remove remnants of uninstalled software? Take it easy! MiniTool, a professional software provider and PC problem troubleshooter, offers you two methods to completely uninstall a program in Windows 10.

You may install programs regularly on your computer, which is a common practice. When installing a software, several files and probably Registry entries are installed on your system to let it work effectively.

But, here comes the problem when you choose to uninstall it since there are some software leftovers. Usually, you uninstall the app from Control Panel but this couldn’t remove all the file entries and some remnants are kept on your hard drive or in the Registry. This may cause your machine to slow down.

But you can completely remove a program from Windows 10/8/7. Now you come to the right place because we will show you how to remove leftover files after uninstall.

How to Remove Remnants of Uninstalled Software

Method 1: Manually Remove Software Leftover Files After Uninstall

This way requires you to perform four steps and you should follow each step to fully uninstall a program. Now, let’s go to see how to completely uninstall a program.

Step 1: Use Control Panel to Uninstall a Program

    1. Type control panel in the search box of Windows 10 and then click this app from the search result.
    2. Go to Programs (viewed by category) >Programs and Features.
    3. Right-click on the program you want to remove and click Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.

How to recover software product keys from any computer even a broken one

Step 2: Delete the Remaining Files and Folders

Although you have succeeded in uninstalling your app, some fragments of the file may remain in some system folders. Thus, you need t check the program files and app data to remove them. Here, you should check these folders for leftovers: %programfiles% and %appdata%.

    1. Input each folder in the search bar and press Enter to directly open the folder.
    2. If there is a folder with the name of the program that you have removed, delete it.

Step 3: Remove App Keys from Windows Registry

In most cases, uninstalling a program doesn’t remove the program from Windows Registry, which could increase the size of Registry. So, you should the Registry keys.

    1. Launch Windows Registry by pressing Win + R keys, inputting registry and clicking OK.
    2. Find these keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software.
    3. If you find the key with the name of the uninstalled program, delete it.

If you forget your BitLocker password but have saved BitLocker recovery key on Microsoft account, it is easy to find that recovery key and unlock your drive. Here’s how to do that.

I recently encrypted my portable USB hard drive with BitLocker. After encrypting it and locking it with a password, I did not use that drive for a while. When I attached that hard drive with my PC today, I realized that I did not remember the BitLocker password.

I tried a couple of passwords I thought I could have used, but with no luck. I had plenty of important data on that hard drive and I kind of freaked out.

Suddenly I realized that I had saved a BitLocker recovery key to my Microsoft account when Windows asked me to back it up. Now the question was, how to find that BitLocker recovery key from Microsoft account? Well, it’s pretty simple. If you’re in the same situation as me, then follow this tutorial on recovering Bitlocker key.

Note: You must have saved your BitLocker recovery key to your Microsoft Account manually. Windows does not store any recovery information by itself.

How to Find BitLocker Recovery Key

    Step 1

Go to https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey and log in with the same Microsoft account credentials you use to log into your Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 PC.

    Step 2

If the PC is not your trusted PC, the page will ask you to authenticate your login by entering a pin code sent to your email or by any other way you may have set (Using Google’s Authenticator app, for example).

    Step 3

After you successfully login and authenticate yourself, you will see recovery keys displayed on the screen. If you have saved BitLocker recovery key for more than one devices, you will have to identify the correct recovery key for the device you are trying to recover. It could be your internal hard drive partition for example. In my case, it was my USB hard drive.

    Step 4

Once you match Key ID with available keys on your Microsoft account, copy the 48-digit recovery key and enter it in the window asking for it. That’s it, you have unlocked your device.

    How to Reset BitLocker Password

Now you will want to reset your BitLocker password because you have forgotten it. To do so, right click on the device or the partition, click ‘Manage BitLocker,’ and select change password. Now Click reset a forgotten password. By selecting reset a forgotten password, you will not have to enter the old password (which you don’t remember). Enter the new password twice and click Finish to save changes.

That’s it. You have now recovered your device or partition using recovery key saved on your Microsoft account and you have changed the password too. Remember to remember the new password now!

One thing to keep in mind here is that you have to make sure you always use a strong password with your BitLocker device as well as your Microsoft account. Because as you followed in this tutorial, if anyone gains access to your Microsoft account, your recovery information can be easily accessed.

How to Make BitLocker Encryption Strong?

To make your BitLocker encryption even stronger, never save recovery information locally. Windows saves BitLocker recovery key in a simple text file when you choose to save the recovery key as a file.

Also, be careful when you choose to print the recovery key on a paper as anyone can have access to that piece of paper. If you ever need to print it, make sure you shred it after use.

If you choose to save your recovery information using third-party password managers such as 1Password, make sure you have a strong password for that application, too.

The best way to use BitLocker is to have a strong password which has a combination of lower and upper case alphabets, numbers and special characters. You should never use a simple password or a password that can be easily guessed.

That’s it, folks. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and I’d like to thank you for reading.
