Change Button Mapping: Requirements and Features

Starting with Switch system version 10.0.0, players can change the function of each individual controller button on a system-wide basis in System Settings. This process is often called remapping a controller, and Nintendo calls it “Change Button Mapping.” Here’s the low-down on how it works:

  • Change Button Mapping supports three types of controller: Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), and Pro Controller. If a third-party controller simulates one of these three categories, its buttons can be remapped as well.
  • For each of these three controller types, you can save up to five unique custom button mappings.
  • It is possible to disable certain buttons completely (such as screen capture) if they cause annoyance while gaming.
  • The orientation of thumbsticks on Joy-Cons can be switched between vertical and horizontal, allowing one-handed play in games that previously only supported a horizontal Joy-Con orientation.
  • It is possible to swap left and right thumbsticks—a nice accessibility feature for some users who might need to play a certain game one-handed.

How to Remap Switch Controller Buttons in System Settings

First, make sure the controller with the buttons you’d like to customize is connected to the Switch. Then launch System Settings by tapping on the gear icon on the Switch’s Home screen.

On the Button Mapping screen, you will see a list of attached controllers on the left side of the screen. Select the controller you’d like to modify, then select “Change.”

If you’d like, you can save your custom button mapping to one of five save slots per controller type.

If Something Goes Wrong: Nintendo’s Fail-Safe Message

If you have changed your button mapping, when you restart the Switch or return to the home screen from Sleep Mode, you will see a warning message reminding you that your controller’s button layout is different than usual.

If you’re having trouble with the controller layout, tap “Reset Button Mapping” on the Switch’s touchscreen display, and the mapping will reset to default. Otherwise, you can select “Use Without Resetting” to keep your custom mapping active.

Important

  • The button mapping can only be changed for the Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The button mapping on the Nintendo Switch Lite system can also be changed.
  • You cannot change the mapping of the POWER Button, the volume buttons, the HOME Button, and the SYNC Button. The mapping of any other button can be changed.
  • Mapping for the A, B, X, and Y Buttons applies only when using the Joy-Con controller as a dual-controller grip (vertically).

Note: Your mapping presets are saved on the Nintendo Switch console, not on the controller. If you change the mapping for your controller, it will not carry over if you pair the controller with another console.

What to do

What would you like to do with the controller inputs?

  1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
  2. Select Change Button Mapping.
  3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Change.
  4. Select a button from the list shown on the screen, then choose a new mapping for that button.

Important: If you want to disable a button input, select Disable.

Important

  • If you want to save the new button mapping settings for future use on a similar controller, select Save as Preset, then select an available preset slot (from 1 to 5).
  • If there are no available preset slots, select the one you want to erase, then select Overwrite.
  1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
  2. Select Change Button Mapping.
  3. On the left side of the screen select a controller whose mapping you want to reset, then select Reset.
  4. Select Reset again to confirm.

Important: The controller configuration can also be reset when waking the console from sleep mode.

Important: You can only load a preset mapping if the controller is the same type as the one for which the preset was created. For example, an existing preset for a left Joy-Con can be loaded for another left Joy-Con, but not to a right Joy-Con.

  1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
  2. Select Change Button Mapping.
  3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Load a Preset .
    • If the option for Load a Preset is greyed out, you will need to select a different controller.
  4. Select an available preset from the mapping slots (1 through 5).

Important: This feature allows you to remap the Left Stick as the Right Stick and vice versa.

  1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
  2. Select Change Button Mapping.
  3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Change.
  4. Select Control Stick Settings.
    • If you are updating the left Joy-Con mapping, you can change the Left Stick mapping by selecting Change to Right Stick.
    • If you are updating the right Joy-Con mapping, you can change the Right Stick mapping by selecting Change to Left Stick.

Important: This mapping change will apply the control sticks only while holding the Joy-Con as a dual-controller grip (vertically).

Once you have your button remaps finalized, go back to the Button Mapping screen and select Save as Preset Mapping to save your new layout. You can return to this page in the future and select the Load a Preset Mapping to see all the mappings you’ve saved for a specific controller.

This may have prevented some players from getting the most out of their games. An update in early 2020 rectified this oversight, and now everyone can adjust their pad settings whenever they like.

Why Would You Need to Remap Your Controller?

You remap your Nintendo Switch controller at a system level, so whether you’re browsing the store or playing a game, you’ll always know exactly what each button does. It’s a personalized option that can work for you in any situation.

It doesn’t just apply to the Joy-Cons either. If you have a Pro Controller, you can also remap that to meet your needs and the layouts that you’re used to. Anyone who predominantly games on PlayStation or Xbox may find that switching the A and B buttons prevents accidental button presses.

  1. Press the “Home Button” to reach your console’s main menu.
  2. Head to the System Settings logo on the bottom bar.

  4. Once done, it will then reflect your changes in the Button Mapping menu. You can also save your settings as one of five presets.

Your Joy-Con is now ready to use with your choice of game or app.

What is Button Mapping?

This is a setting that allows you to remap or reconfigure the button inputs for supported controllers on Nintendo Switch systems.

You can also disable the inputs for certain buttons or change the control stick orientation while using the Joy-Con controller in solo horizontal grip.

Which controllers are supported?

This setting is supported on Joy-Con(L), Joy-Con(R), and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The buttons on Nintendo Switch Lite can also be remapped.

Which buttons can be remapped or reconfigured?

You can configure any button other than the POWER Button, Volume, the HOME Button, and SYNC Button.

Important: You cannot configure other buttons to respond as the Volume, SYNC or POWER Button inputs.

Does this setting apply to the control sticks too?

The directional functionality of the control sticks (up, down, left, right, etc.) cannot be configured to a button input. However, you can change the side each stick is on. For example, the R stick input can be configured on the L stick.

Can I apply a custom button configuration on multiple controllers?

Each controller must be configured separately. However, you can load an existing configuration and apply it to the same type of controller. For example, a custom configuration for a left Joy-Con can be loaded on another left Joy-Con, but not to a right Joy-Con.

Does my custom button configuration carry over if I pair my controller on another system?

No. The custom button configurations are saved on the system, not on the controller. If you pair your controller on another system, the buttons will respond as the standard button configuration.

Can I save multiple configurations for each controller?

On each system, up to five different custom configurations can be saved for Joy-Con(L), five for Joy-Con(R), and five for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

My controller is not responding properly. How do I know if the button configuration has been remapped or disabled?

Throughout different menus, a wrench icon will be displayed beside the controller in-use at the bottom-left corner of the system screen to indicate that there is a custom button configuration for one or more controllers. This means that one or more button inputs have been remapped or disabled.

  • If you don’t know or remember the custom configuration for your controller, you can set the system to sleep mode. Upon waking up the system, you’ll have the option to reset the controller inputs.
  • Prior to troubleshooting a controller, we strongly recommend you reset the button configuration to the standard inputs.

Will my custom button configuration apply while playing a game?

Once applied to a controller, a custom configuration will apply to nearly all scenarios on Nintendo Switch including playing games, Nintendo eShop, the HOME Menu, Maintenance Mode, etc.

Nintendo quietly updated the Switch’s software to version 10.0.0 this week, adding new features like more profile icons and the ability to transfer data via SD cards. And while some people might yawn while reading about these additions, wishing instead for folders and themes, an accessibility feature introduced in the latest version is extraordinarily meaningful to many gamers.

This addition is the ability to remap controller buttons. Simply put, this means you can reassign the button configuration to any custom layout you prefer. For instance, if you prefer the ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons to be swapped, you can now do so.

Previously, remapping controller buttons on the Switch was limited to individual games. If a particular game didn’t give you the option to reassign buttons, you couldn’t do it. This firmware update adds the ability to remap buttons system-wide, across all games.

Some people might not immediately understand why this is such an important feature, one that should have been included on the Switch from the day the console launched.

The ability to change the button inputs on a controller can be absolutely essential for many people to be able to play games at all. It opens the door for accessibility options on the Switch that quite literally make games playable for many more people.

Remapping buttons can make certain games playable with just a single joy-con or one side of a Pro Controller, for example. If a game doesn’t require the use of every button, which most don’t, players can reassign the needed ones to be closer together.

Why is this useful? Perhaps a player is limited to using just one hand while gaming; now they may finally be able to jump into a game that had been previously dismissed as being too difficult or inaccessible due to the controls.

Maybe the player can use two hands to play, but experiences chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or EDS and must take frequent breaks while gaming.

The Switch’s new ability to save up to five button configurations can be game-changing for these types of players: now they can simply change to a different button layout if it becomes too painful to continue playing.

This feature benefits far more gamers than just those who experience motor difficulties while playing though. For many people, learning the controls to games can be a challenge, especially when they are complex or vastly different to those in another game they’ve recently played.

The ability to keep the buttons consistent across every new game can allow players to quickly jump into their adventure without spending a long time learning and memorizing brand new control schemes. This might not seem like it would be a challenge to most people, but for those with cognitive disabilities, it can potentially eliminate unnecessary frustration.

Able-bodied gamers don’t always consider how meaningful this feature is. The next time you sit down with your favorite game, try playing with only one hand, or with only a limited number of fingers.

Try playing without any sound, or with diminished lighting to make it difficult to see what’s happening on the screen. Try pausing the game every ten minutes to take a fifteen-minute break, and see how much progress you make in an hour.

These are just some of the difficulties that many gamers experience every time they try to play and accessibility options to help fix these roadblocks aren’t always available to them. They are left with two options: attempt to play the game despite extreme difficulties or don’t play at all.

Remapping controllers should be an industry standard, and Nintendo should be applauded for finally adding this accessibility feature to the Switch, especially with very little fanfare, even if it arrived a bit late. Since it doesn’t directly affect everybody, it’s an issue that often gets swept under the rug. But that doesn’t mean it’s not important.

This isn’t the first time that Nintendo has developed its software with accessibility in mind recently. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe added the ability to accelerate the karts without holding down the A button, helping those with chronic pain. Splatoon 2 had a colorblind mode that allows players to lock the ink colors for both teams to a combination that is easily distinguishable.

It can be incredibly eye-opening to able-bodied gamers to learn just how much companies such as Nintendo have done for accessibility, and what more they could be doing.

Game Maker’s Toolkit on YouTube has a series of videos addressing accessibility that teach how games can be designed with motor disabilities, cognitive impairments, hearing and visual disabilities, and more in mind.

Nintendo isn’t the only company to be developing with accessibility in mind, either. Microsoft has been a leader in this area, especially by creating an adaptive Xbox controller for players with disabilities.

Nintendo’s efforts to make gaming more accessible for everyone should be celebrated. Sure, cosmetic improvements like themes would be great, but accessibility is often the fundamental issue for many gamers.

In fact, if you are a gamer, the topic of accessibility should matter to you. It is likely that you know or have played with another person who benefits from accessibility improvements. Gaming should be something that can be enjoyed by everyone in a safe and comfortable way, and the community as a whole is better when that happens.

Nintendo have added button remapping as part of their 10.0.0 system update. This is remapping at a system level, meaning that swapping buttons around will affect in-game button presses and also how you control game menus and the Nintendo system menu. For instance, you could swap controls such as A and B around, if you would prefer to use the buttons this way, or you could map the letter buttons over to the D-pad, if that makes things easier for you. In addition to button remapping, you can also swap the joystick functions over, but not map to individual directions or axis’.

Remapping this way at a system level, in a similar way to how you can remap on PS4 and Xbox One, means that any remapped inputs are not shown onscreen in-game as button or joystick prompts. For instance, if you swapped the A and B buttons over you would need to remember that when a game says to press ‘A’ onscreen to do an action, you would press B yourself. This type of remapping also does not allow for contextual mappings in-game, such as choosing an input to use for a particular action in a certain context. Contextual remapping requires a developer to add this option into the game itself. However, system remapping can still be used to customise controls, which may make it easier for some players to access their console.

Please note that Nintendo state that button remapping will only work for Joy Cons, the Switch Pro Controller and the Switch Lite. It may not be possible therefore to use the remapping options if you are using a third-party controller, even if it is licensed by Nintendo.

You can also disable the majority of buttons on the controller. Please also note that you cannot remap, or disable, the Home, Power, Volume or Sync buttons. In this blog post we will focus on the buttons used for gameplay.

Below, we will break down the steps, explaining how you can remap the buttons and analog sticks on a Nintendo Switch controller.

To try remapping buttons, first go to System Settings:

Now scroll down to Controllers and Sensors and go across to select Change Button Mapping:

If you scroll down, you can also swap the joysticks over. You can make left stick act as right, or vice versa. You can also make both sticks act as the same stick – so essentially you could have two left sticks, if you like:

After deciding on your stick configuration, you can also swap buttons around. After clicking on the button that you want to swap, you can now see the options as to what you would like to swap the button to. You can also disable any button that you might use for gameplay. This means if you accidentally press a particular button, you can potentially switch it off:

Once you have selected the button you would like to swap, you go back to the previous screen, where you can see what you have swapped around. Click Done if you are happy with your selections at this stage:

Although you cannot remap the Home button, you can also make another button also act as the home button, if you prefer. You can also double up other buttons, such as by making almost every button act as A. You do always need at least one button acting as A and one acting as B, in order to be able to control system menus the Switch won’t actually allow you to proceed with your configuration if you don’t have at least one button acting as A and one as B, as shown in the picture below:

Once you have created a configuration that you are happy with, select Done. The Switch will give you the following advice:

You will now go back to the previous screen and can choose to Save as a Preset:

Now you just need to select a slot to save your Preset to: :

You can have up to five different Presets, so if different games require different configurations, or if particular parts of a game require different controls, you can go back to the menu and swap to another Preset.

You can swap all the buttons in the latest update

Nintendo’s latest Switch update added a few features to the console, but the most important one is that it’s now possible to remap gamepad buttons.

This means that if you want to make your ‘A’ button function like a ‘B’ button like with Microsoft’s Xbox One controller, that is now possible.

To do this, you first need to make sure you’ve updated your Switch to the latest software. You’ll see an option labelled ‘System Update’ at the top of the ‘System’ Settings category. Tapping this will make sure that you’re ready to customize your controller.

Once you’re updated to Switch firmware ‘version 10.0,’ you’ll be able to remap your buttons.

While you might think that Nintendo would have placed this setting in the controller section on the home screen, it’s actually in the Settings menu under a heading called ‘Controllers and Sensors.’

From there, select the ‘Change Button Mapping’ option and you’re all set.

The process of remapping a controller is actually relatively straightforward. Select the controller you want, and then you can go down the list and remap the buttons to what you prefer.

For a lot of people, I’m sure this will be used to remap the Switch’s Joy-Cons, Pro Controller and the Switch Lite to function more closely to PlayStation 4’s and Xbox One’s gamepad. This feature should also make it easier for anyone that has some form of disability that prevents them from holding a controller in the standard way.

While a lot of people are unable to buy a Nintendo Switch console as of this moment in time thanks to it being sold out pretty much everywhere, those who already own the system can now download update 10.0 to receive the luxury of being able to remap the joy-con controller buttons.

In addition to being able to remap your controller buttons, the 10.0 update has also added the ability for players to transfer downloaded games directly to an SD card to free up the already small amount of data storage inside the system.

The above is definitely a neat addition from the update thanks to the storage space being incredibly small, but the ability to remap the joy-con controller buttons is an equally welcome feature. This is because there are so many times you press the wrong commands thanks to being more accustomed to the layout of either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

  • Proceed to settings on the home screen to remap your joy-con controller buttons for Nintendo Switch
  • Enter the sub-menu of Controllers and Sensors
  • Select Change Button Mapping
  • Click either the L or R joy-con and then select Change to begin remapping its layout
  • Tap Done when you’ve finished customising your controller buttons
  • Make sure to save your custom layout as a Preset
  • You can always return to Nintendo’s default layout for their buttons by pressing Reset

And that’s all there is to remapping the buttons for your joy-con controllers on the Nintendo Switch.

You can also do the same with buttons on the Nintendo Switch Lite as well as the Pro Controller.

    What to do

    What would you like to do with the controller inputs?

    1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
    2. Select Change Button Mapping.
    3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Change.
    4. Select a button from the list shown on the screen, then choose a new mapping for that button.

    Important: If you want to disable a button input, select Disable.

    • If you want to save the new button mapping settings for future use on a similar controller, select Save as Preset, then select an available preset slot (from 1 to 5).
    • If there are no available preset slots, select the one you want to erase, then select Overwrite.
    1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
    2. Select Change Button Mapping.
    3. On the left side of the screen select a controller whose mapping you want to reset, then select Reset.
    4. Select Reset again to confirm.

    Important: The controller configuration can also be reset when waking the console from sleep mode.

    Important: You can only load a preset mapping if the controller is the same type as the one for which the preset was created. For example, an existing preset for a left Joy-Con can be loaded for another left Joy-Con, but not to a right Joy-Con.

    1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
    2. Select Change Button Mapping.
    3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Load a Preset .
      • If the option for Load a Preset is greyed out, you will need to select a different controller.
    4. Select an available preset from the mapping slots (1 through 5).

    Important: This feature allows you to remap the Left Stick as the Right Stick and vice versa.

    1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings and then Controllers and Sensors.
    2. Select Change Button Mapping.
    3. On the left side of the screen select a controller, then select Change.
    4. Select Control Stick Settings.
      • If you are updating the left Joy-Con mapping, you can change the Left Stick mapping by selecting Change to Right Stick.
      • If you are updating the right Joy-Con mapping, you can change the Right Stick mapping by selecting Change to Left Stick.

    Important: This mapping change will apply the control sticks only while holding the Joy-Con as a dual-controller grip (vertically).

    (Pocket-lint) – Accessibility has thankfully been something of a focus in the games industry over the last few years, as all of the major console manufacturers have become more aware of some of the easy steps they can take to make their games more easily played by everyone.

    While Microsoft has blazed a genuinely impressive trail ahead with the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which effectively makes controlling games a limitlessly adaptable business, Nintendo recently updated the Switch’s software with an all-important change that will do a lot of good as well – button remapping.

    This essentially means that you can now change which buttons activate which functions on the Switch’s Joy-Cons and Pro Controller, which is hugely useful if certain buttons on a controller are harder for you to use, such as the triggers.

    The remapping is only available on official Nintendo controllers, though, meaning it won’t work if you’ve saved a few bucks by going for a third-party alternative. It’ll work for Joy-Con controllers, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and for the Switch Lite’s built-in buttons.

    You can to save five “favourite” profiles of button layouts for each controller, which you’ll then be able to swap between more quickly, meaning that you could set up a few different layouts for different games you’re playing.

    Best of all, it’s not a hard process to initiate – just follow the steps we’ve laid out below to create your own custom control schemes however you like.

    How to remap your Nintendo Switch buttons

    1. On your Switch or Switch Lite’s Home menu, tap the Settings cog to enter the Settings menu

    Go down to Controllers and Sensors and tap into the sub-menu

    Tap on Change Button Mapping, then choose the controller you want to re-map and tap Change

    Choose each button in turn, and select a remapped option to map onto it

    When you’re finished, tap Done

    If you want to save the configuration, tap Save as a Preset

  • To reset your controller to its default layout, tap Reset

    What is Button Mapping?

    This is a setting that allows you to change the button inputs for supported controllers on Nintendo Switch consoles.

    You can also disable the inputs for certain buttons or change the control stick orientation while using the Joy-Con controller in solo horizontal grip.

    Which controllers are supported?

    This setting is supported for the Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The button mapping on a Nintendo Switch Lite system can also be changed.

    Which buttons can be remapped?

    You can change the mapping for any button other than the POWER Button, the Volume Buttons, the HOME Button, and SYNC Button.

    Important: You cannot configure other buttons to respond as the Volume, SYNC or POWER Button inputs.

    Does this setting apply to the control sticks too?

    The directional functionality of the control sticks (up, down, left, right, etc.) cannot be mapped to a button input. However, you can change the side each control stick is on. For example, the R Stick input can be configured on the L Stick.

    Can I apply a button mapping setting to multiple controllers?

    Each controller must be configured separately. However, you can load a preset mapping and apply it to the same type of controller. For example, a preset for a left Joy-Con can be loaded for another left Joy-Con, but not for a right Joy-Con.

    Does my mapping carry over if I pair my controller with another console?

    No. The button mapping settings are saved on the console, not on the controller. If you pair your controller with another console, the controls will revert to the default button mapping.

    Can I save multiple button mapping settings for each controller?

    On each console, up to five different presets can be saved for the Joy-Con (L), five for the Joy-Con (R), and five for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

    My controller is not responding properly. How do I know if the button mapping has been changed or disabled?

    Throughout different menus, a spanner icon will be displayed beside the controller in-use at the bottom-left corner of the touch screen to indicate that there is a user-defined button mapping for one or more controllers. This means that one or more buttons have had their mapping changed or have been disabled.

    Important

    • If you can’t remember the mapping settings for your controller, you can set the console to sleep mode. Upon waking it, you’ll have the option to reset the button mapping.
    • Prior to troubleshooting a controller, we strongly recommend that you verify that the button mapping settings have not been changed.

    Will my button mapping settings apply while playing a game?

    Once applied to a controller, your button mapping settings will apply to nearly all situations on Nintendo Switch, including playing games, Nintendo eShop, the HOME Menu, Recovery Mode, etc.

    Keep in mind that your button mapping settings will be automatically disabled in certain instances, such as performing a controller button test, calibrating the control sticks, calibrating motion controls, etc.

    Nintendo released a new system software update for Nintendo Switch on Monday, version 10.0.0, which lets console owners remap controller buttons on the Joy-Con controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, as well as transfer software data from system memory to an SD card (and vice versa).

    The update also gives Animal Crossing fans some new user icons from New Horizons: Tom Nook, Timmy and Tommy Nook, Isabelle, Wilbur, C.J., and Flick.

    Here’s how Nintendo describes the option to transfer data, from the company’s official patch notes:

    Added an option to transfer software data between the system memory and an SD card.

    Users can now transfer downloadable software, update data, and DLC from the system memory to an SD card (and vice versa).

    Note that save data and some update data cannot be transferred to an SD card.

    The option to move software data can be found under System Settings > Data Management.

    And here’s how Nintendo describes the new option to remap controller buttons, a new feature that can be found in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping:

    Analog stick and button configurations can now be changed for each paired controller.

    Custom configurations can be saved as favorites in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.

    Custom configurations are stored on the Nintendo Switch system.

    How to Change Control Settings and Remap Controls (Nintendo Switch)

    It is possible to change the in-game control mapping easily via the Settings menu. Unfortunately, the remapping is somewhat limited, as players are only given a select list of options for each button, but it does allow for variation to match the player’s preferences.

    1 Go to the Trainer Menu from the Home Screen.
    2 Select the Settings Tab.
    3 Choose Button Settings, to pull up a list of buttons.
    4 Select the button you wish to remap and press A. You’ll be able to check a list of available move options for this button.

    Explanation of Each Move (Left Side)

    Initial Button Description
    Unite Move An Ultimate move which Pokemon gain access to at specific levels (varies per Pokemon).
    View Arena Hold and use the right stick to pan your camera around you.
    Minimap ON/OFF Toggles the minimap between a small view and a large overlay.
    Move Control your character.
    Quick Chat Hold and use the right stick to select one of a set of easy phrases or announcements.
    Move Select When reaching a certain level, you can pick one of two moves to learn. Use these buttons to select the move, or ignore it to choose the preset Auto-Selected move.
    Warp to Start Hold for a few seconds to quickly warp to your base, from where you can do a super jump to any controlled goal.

    Explanation of Each Move (Right Side)

    Initial Button Description
    Move 1 & 2 Hold and release one of these buttons to execute one of the two moves currently learned. At the start of the match, pressing either ZR or R determines which of the two starting moves you will learn.
    Open the Menu Allow you to choose options like exiting the match.
    Attack The standard attack. Unlike special moves, it has no cooldown time.
    Cancel Move While holding the ZR or R button, you can cancel the use of the move by pressing B.
    Score When you have Aeos Energy and are standing in the opponents’ goal zones, hold X to score a goal.
    Battle Item Uses the Battle Item equipped before the start of the match.
    Aim Move While holding ZR or R, use the right stick to aim your move.

    How to Change Control Settings and Remap Controls (Mobile)

    Unfortunately, there is currently no way to change the layout of the buttons in-game.

    However, there are a few quality of life changes you can choose in the Controls tab at the Setting Menu.

    Changing Movement and Moves Area

    You can choose to change the horizontal axis of where the movement and the moves are on the screen.

    This can be useful for people who have their own way of gripping their phones or holding their tablets.

I have installed Android on my Switch’s SD card with the sole purpose of streaming my pc games to it. Moonlight seems to work exceptionally well, however even though it recognizes my joycons as X360 gamepads, the buttons don’t swap, it still uses the Nintendo mapping. Is there any way to change it? I can’t remap them in every game.

Also, in Steam Link half the buttons don’t work, is it an Android driver issue?

  • Boot into TWRP (recovery), mount the system partition, then flash this.

    Those are the controller config files for the joycons in Android.

    They still are in default layout – so if you want the facebuttons swapped use a text editor to swap around the buttons like you want them to work, before flashing.

    If you are rooted (Magisk), you can also edit those files with a root enabled file manager (I use Total Commander) directly on android (in the directory they are in in the zip, just on the system). I did so in the past. Reboot, and the buttons wil be switched.

    Otherwise, edit the files in the .zip, then boot into TWRP (recovery), then mount system, and flash the .zip.

Moonlight seems to work exceptionally well, however even though it recognizes my joycons as X360 gamepads, the buttons don’t swap, it still uses the Nintendo mapping. Is there any way to change it? I can’t remap them in every game.

    Also, in Steam Link half the buttons don’t work, is it an Android driver issue?

  • Boot into TWRP (recovery), mount the system partition, then flash this.

    Those are the controller config files for the joycons in Android.

    They still are in default layout – so if you want the facebuttons swapped use a text editor to swap around the buttons like you want them to work, before flashing.

    If you are rooted (Magisk), you can also edit those files with a root enabled file manager (I use Total Commander) directly on android (in the directory they are in in the zip, just on the system). I did so in the past. Reboot, and the buttons wil be switched.

    Otherwise, edit the files in the .zip, then boot into TWRP (recovery), then mount system, and flash the .zip.

    Nintendo released a new system update for the Switch console on Tuesday. Included are two big changes that console owners have been requesting for some time.

    Update 10.0.0 is available for download to Nintendo Switch consoles. The system update allows players to remap the buttons and switch the analog sticks on the Joy-Cons , the Pro Controller and the Switch Lite. Up to five configurations can be saved internally on the Switch .

    Another change is the option to transfer downloadable software and update data from the SD card to the Switch’s internal memory. What can’t be moved over is saved game data and certain update files.

    Aside from these two features, the 10.0.0 update lets users bookmark news items, adds more profile icons and a new Play Activity setting.

    The Nintendo Switch just got a major software update.

    Nintendo Switch owners worldwide should now have firmware update 10.0.0. Unlike most of the recent updates, this particular release is full of welcome, helpful features.

    The biggest highlight is that Switch now allows users to transfer data between system memory and SD cards and vice versa. This applies to game data, DLC, updates and so on. For some games, save data – and in some cases, update data – cannot be transferred, however.

    Another major addition in today’s update is the ability to remap controller functions at the system level. It can be done for analogue sticks and the different buttons, and you can even save up to five custom configs per console. Both Joy-Cons and the Switch Pro Controller support the feature.

With the exception of the home and screenshot buttons, all of the buttons and triggers can be re-configured and swapped out. Nintendo even lets you swap the analog stick movement schemes just in case your left or right JoyCon is drifting, and you can also lock the controller in vertical or horizontal orientation.

    Users can save five different presets with different mappings, and right now the feature only works with official Nintendo-branded devices. Access and customize the JoyCon or Switch Pro controller layout by hopping into System Settings-> Controllers and Sensors-> Change Button Mapping.

    Version 10.0 for the Nintendo Switch is a major update for the console as it allows for players to change which buttons do what on the Joy-Cons. To access this option, players simply have to go to System Settings on the Switch home page and select “Controllers and Sensors.”

    From there, Switch owners go to “Change Button Mapping” and that brings up a model of your console. After selecting the Switch, players can change what each button on the console can do from the A and B button to ZL and ZR.

    Between wireless controllers and wireless headphones, Bluetooth is one of the most popular technologies around today. Nearly every major device uses Bluetooth in some way, and that includes the Nintendo Switch.

    When it first launched, the Switch’s Bluetooth features were pretty limited. And while it’s still not the best device for Bluetooth fanatics, it now supports both Bluetooth headphones and controllers.

    Here’s how Bluetooth works on the Switch, and how to connect your headphones or controllers.

    Yes, the Nintendo Switch has Bluetooth

    The Nintendo Switch uses Bluetooth to connect with both wireless controllers and audio devices.

    Pairing headphones

    To pair Bluetooth headphones or speakers with your Switch, make sure the console is updated and then open the Settings menu. Scroll down to Bluetooth Audio and select Pair Device, then connect your headphones.

    Just note that once you’ve connected a pair of Bluetooth headphones to the Switch, you can only connect two wireless controllers (or one pair of Joy-Cons). And your headphones will disconnect while playing local multiplayer.

    Pairing controllers

    Most official Nintendo Switch controllers are wireless, and they all connect in the same way.

    On the Switch’s home screen, select the Controllers icon and then Change Grip/Order. At that point, you’ll likely just need to press your controller’s shoulder buttons at the same time. If you’re trying to pair a totally new controller, you might also need to press the controller’s SYNC button.

    But what if you want to play your Switch with a controller from another system — say, the PlayStation DualShock? There’s no built-in way to do it, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

    If you’re willing to spend a few extra dollars, you can go on Amazon and buy a Nintendo Switch Bluetooth adapter. These adapters plug right into your console or dock and let you connect extra Bluetooth devices.

    The best Nintendo Switch Bluetooth adapters to buy

    If you want to connect wireless headphones to your Nintendo Switch without the controller and local multiplayer restrictions mentioned above, try the Thunderobot Bluetooth 5.0 Audio Transmitter.

    You’ll plug it into your Switch’s charging port when in handheld mode, or into the Switch’s charging stand when it’s docked. Just note that you might experience some audio delay compared to the built-in wireless headphone feature.

    This article explains how to connect PS4 controllers and Xbox One controllers to Nintendo Switch. The process is similar for both controllers, and both require a controller adapter. Instructions in this article apply to the official PS4 and Xbox One controllers and the Magic-NS Wireless Controller Adapter, but other third-party controllers and adapters also work with the Switch.

    How to Use a PS4 Controller on Switch

    If your DualShock 4 is synced with a PlayStation 4 console, unplug the console before you begin so it doesn’t interfere with the Switch adapter.

    To use a Playstation official DualShock 4 controller with your Nintendo Switch, follow these steps:

    Place your Switch in the dock and turn it on.

    Plug a Magic-NS adapter, available at Amazon, into one of the Nintendo Switch USB ports.

    Use the Joy-Con controllers to wake up your Switch and then press L+R to pair both Joy-Cons with the console.

    Select System Settings from the home screen.

    Select Controllers and Sensors, and then select Pro Controller Wired Communication to turn it on.

    Connect the PS4 controller to the Magic-NS with a USB cable. The LED light on the controller should turn on, indicating it’s been detected.

    Press and hold the black button on top of the Magic-NS adapter until the light on the back starts flashing.

    Press the PS button and the Share button simultaneously on the DualShock 4. The adapter should automatically detect it.

    Unplug your PS4 controller from the adapter and use it wirelessly as if it were a Switch Pro Controller.

    How to Use an Xbox Controller on Switch

    The steps for using an Xbox One controller with the Switch are the same as setting up a PS4 controller. Hold down the pairing button on the Xbox One controller as you press the button on the adapter until the Xbox LED light starts flashing.

    The buttons on the Xbox One controller are analogous to the Switch Pro. The only major difference is that you must press View+Menu to capture a screenshot.

    The Mayflash Magic-NS adapter comes packaged with a button-mapping guide and stickers that you can place over your non-Switch controllers.

    Limitations of Using a PS4 or Xbox Controller With the Switch

    Unfortunately, it’s not possible to wake up the Switch from sleep mode with a non-Nintendo controller, so you’ll still need a pair of Joy-Cons. You may also have to occasionally undock your Switch and put it back in to get the adapter to recognize other controllers. That said, since both Joy-Cons still work while the PS4 controller is connected, you can play multiplayer games with your PS4 controller.

    The button mapping is intuitive, although it’s important to note that pressing the PS4 controller touchpad will take screenshots. The Share button on the DualShock 4 is also mapped to the minus () button on the Joy-Con.

    Which Controllers Work on Switch?

    Along with the Joy-Cons that come with the system, the Switch supports several alternatives, including the Nintendo Switch Pro and Wii U Pro controllers. You can even use a GameCube controller if you have the GameCube adapter for Wii U. You can also use one of the many third-party gamepads available for the Switch.

    Surprisingly, the Switch supports controllers for other game consoles, including the DualShock 4 and many Xbox controllers. Most controllers that work with the PS4 and Xbox One are compatible with Nintendo’s console, including arcade-style fight sticks like the Mayflash F300.

    Using a PS4 or Xbox One controller is not ideal for playing Switch-exclusive games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but they might be better for playing retro games and 2-D platformers like Mega Man 11.

    Nintendo Switch Controller Adapters

    While the Nintendo Switch has Bluetooth capabilities, you need a special adapter to connect third-party peripherals. The Mayflash Magic-NS Wireless Controller Adapter is a versatile tool compatible with many consoles, so it’s a worthwhile investment if you have a lot of old peripherals.

    Other options include the 8Bitdo adapter, which also supports Wii remotes and DualShock 3 controllers. Considering the high price tag of the Switch Pro Controller, a $20 adapter is preferable if you already have units for other systems. Just make sure it’s compatible with the Switch.

    You can only connect one controller per adapter, so you’ll need two adapters to use multiple peripherals.

    You can’t change the color of the PS4 controller LED on a Switch or even when playing on a PlayStation. If you connect your PS4 to your PC, you can change the light color in your Steam settings.

    Yes, but you need both a Magic-NS wireless adapter and a CronusMAX PLUS adapter. Plug the CronusMAX into the PS4, connect a USB hub, then connect the Magic-NS and the Switch controller to set it up.

    Not on the original Switch, but if you have a Switch Lite with a USB port, you can connect your PS4 controller using an adapter.

    The Nintendo Switch system firmware has hit Ver. 10.0 and with it comes some much-needed additions to the console like controller remapping and a basic form of software transfer.

    This is the update that many users expected to drop earlier in the year, but now that it is out it brings some of the features that fans have wanted since the console first launched in 2017.

    The biggest among the new features is the ability to freely remap all of the buttons on Joy-Con and Pro Controllers. This will help players who swap between the Switch and other consoles to make all of the button layouts uniform across all platforms.

This means while yes, you can transfer games easily between systems, the save data will remain only on the first system.

    The only way around this is if the game allows Cloud Storage, but the roster of games that have this feature on the Switch is smaller than on other consoles.

    There are a few other updates that add some customization to the console, but those two are the major inclusions. Here are the remaining changes.

    AIM PS5 Remapping Paddles:

    1) Plug the USB cable into the controller while plugged into your PS5 or PC.
    2) Press and hold both (left and right) bottom paddles at the same time for 5 seconds. This enables remapping mode.
    3) Next, press the paddle then the button you would like it to correspond to and hold for 2 seconds. (Example: press the bottom left paddle then ‘X’ and hold for 2 seconds.) Do this for each button you would like remapped to a paddle.
    4) Once you done remapping press and hold both (left and right ) bottom paddles at the same time for 5 seconds to exit remap mode.

    * While connected as a wired controller, NFC cannot be used.

    If you’d like to use your controller with a different console

    Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers can only be paired with one console at a time.
    This means that whenever you use the controller with a different console, you first need to pair it with that console.

    Briefly press the POWER Button on the console to make it enter Sleep Mode. Then press the button again to wake the console, and proceed to the HOME Menu. The screen pictured will appear, from which you can select “Reset Button Mapping” to restore all button mappings to their default settings.

    Using the Adapter with Your Console
    The Controller Adapter allows you to switch between Console mode and PC/Mac® mode. Make sure that your mode is configured before plugging your adapter into a device.

    Console Mode for Nintendo Switch®

    1. Make sure the compatibility switch on your adapter is set to CONSOLE Mode.
    2. Plugin your controller for N64® into the adapter controller port.
    3. Insert the USB end of the adapter into a free port on your dock.

    Note: Controller inputs and functionality may vary depending on game compatibility. The Controller Adapter is not compatible with extension port accessories.

    Remapping your Button Inputs
    You can enable alternate button layouts by holding either the L button, R button, L and R buttons, C-Up button, C-Down button, C-Right button, or C-Left button on your controller as you insert your adapter into a USB port on your dock. If you do not hold down any of the
    buttons, your button layout will be in the default layout.

    • You can also change your inputs in your game’s settings if your game allows it.
    • The remapping function only works when plugging in the adapter. If you switch controllers via the controller port on the adapter, the button layout will not change.
    • Unplugging the adapter from the dock, turning off your console, or your console going into Sleep mode will cause the button input remapping to revert to the default layout.

    PC / Mac® Mode

    1. Make sure the compatibility switch is set to PC Mode.
    2. Plugin your controller for N64® into the adapter controller port.
    3. Insert the USB end of the adapter into a free USB port on your PC or Mac®.
    4. Make sure to configure your controller inputs via the game settings. Setup and functionality may vary depending on your device.

    Issue: I am currently using an USB Xbox controller, but would like to use the controller listed above. The N64 controller I am using can be detected and used, but C buttons don’t work as the Right Analog stick and A and B buttons are reversed or not working at all. . I’m hoping the online community can help me solve this issue. I am already aware that I have to edit the .cfg files, but I am not sure on which ones to configure and what to change.

    Thanks to the post made by @feloric and some digging around on the website listed in their post, I have fixed the N64 Controller for use with Mupen64plus. Open a ROM with Mupen64Plus and pull up the Retroarch GUI, go to Controls, and save the core remap file. Exit the ROM and remove your MicroSD card(if you’re using a Raspberry Pi) and go to this file: /opt/retropie/configs/n64/Mupen64Plus GLES2/ . In it will be a file named: Mupen64Plus GLES2.rmp . Open it and replace the text with this:

    After this, you’ll want to open a ROM for the N64 and open the Retroarch GUI one last time and go to controls and load the remap file that you just edited. Close the GUI and if you followed these instructions correctly, congratulations, you can emulate N64 games and play them with an USB N64 Controller.

    This will correct the issues I mentioned when I was describing my issue. The only difference between an original N64 and this is now the C buttons have to be spammed in games where they control the camera like Super Mario 64. Still better then not working at all though. Also, if most of you guys(or gals) use your left trigger as the hotkey enable button, it may mess with that function(I don’t know since I use a keyboard to exit ROMs and stuff like that). I hope this is useful and helps a lot of you out there who are experiencing the same issues I was before.

    I had a similar problem to you. Are you having issues while in game or are you having issues with emulationstation as well? I was able to configure emulationstation easy enough from the autoconfig setup, but had issues in game.     I found the best strategy is to set the hotkey to a useless button like L then set the input_menu_toggle_btn = “3” in /opt/retropie/configs/SYSTEMNAME/retroarch.cfg to any button of your choosing. Press the hotkey (L) + whatever button you set to input_menu_toggle_btn at the same time. This will bring up the retroarch GUI. It will have a “controls” section where you can remap the controls while in emulator. Find your optimal settings and save the control mapping. Use that mapping for other games.

    Another protip is to use the jstest utility (see linked guide) to figure out which buttons map to which numbers. It can help you set comfortable hotkeys like input_menu_toggle_btn .

    I’ve been just about banging my head against a wall for the last few days since purchasing a dragonrise n64 controller, looking at every forum post under the sun, and none of them were useful. I must have edited every config file there is thrice and no dice. But your post led me to the config file which, although it didn’t contain the string “input_menu_toggle_btn”, told me that I could hit f1 on a secondary input to open the core specific menu and remap the input according to the results of jstest. I can finally play starfox 64. Thank you so much. This post was a needle in a haystack of irrelevant advice.

    I’m still having a lot of issues with mapping: I was hoping this would help but not seeing a Mupen64Plus GLES2/ folder in the /opt/retropie/configs/n64/ location.

    I seem to have controller config files in:
    /opt/retropie/configs/n64/retroarch.cfg That says: input_remapping_directory = “/opt/retropie/configs/n64/”

    /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfig/SWITCH CO.,LTD. Controller (Dinput).cfg
    says

    @CobaltEcho The .rmp file doesn’t exist by default. That’s why you can’t see it if you look through SSH. You have to go into your RGUI (in game) to create one manually (select + x to open the rgui).

    Alternatively, you could try making hardcoded configuration changes through the various retroarch config files.
