Windows 10 is out, so we’re going from our Macs to PCs with daily regularity. While there are quite a few differences between them, nothing trips us up more than cut/copy/paste. Here is how to remap cut/copy/paste so they’re the same on both platforms.
One of the hardest things to get used to when we go from Mac to Windows, or Windows to Mac is cut/copy/paste. On a Mac, this is accomplished using the “Command +” combination, while on Windows it’s done through “Control +”.
If you aren’t using an Apple-branded keyboard, such as one with a Windows key, then that will double as the “Command” key on your Mac, however, Windows still uses “Control” as its modifier so while you may be used to using “Command” on your Mac, on Windows all that will typically do is open the Start menu.
Today we want to show you how to do some simple remapping on both your Mac and your Windows machine so that cut/copy/paste doesn’t trip you up. Of course, this can be applied to all other keyboard shortcuts that use “Command” or “Control” as well.
On a Mac
On a Mac, this is easy. We’ve talked at great length about just how configurable the Mac keyboard is and how you can change and assign keyboard shortcuts for a vast number of items. It’s no different with modifier keys. Open the keyboard preferences and click the “Modifier Keys…” button.
You can change the following four modifier keys: “Caps Lock”, “Control”, “Option”, and “Command”.
For our purposes, we’re only going to modify “Control” to “Command” and “Command” to “Control”.
Now, whenever we want to use any keyboard shortcut such as cut, copy, paste, or anything that previously required the “Command” key, we’ll instead use “Control” instead to execute it.
On Windows
Windows doesn’t provide a simple way to remap keys without modifying the registry, but you can use third-party software that will quickly get the job done. We recommend SharpKeys, which provides an easy-to-use interface and makes short work of everything.
To remap your “Control” key to your “Windows” key, the easiest thing to do is click the “Type Key” button.
First, press the left “Control” button in the left column, then press the “Windows” key in the right column.
Now you see that we’ve remapped the left “Control” button to act as the “Windows” key.
We’re still not done. Even though the “Control” key has been remapped to act as our “Windows” key, we still need to remap the “Windows” key to the “Control” key. Otherwise, you will just have two keys which act like the “Windows” key.
The final result will look like the following screenshot.
The last thing to do is to click the “Write to Registry” button. You will be required to log out of your account or restart the system.
Once your logout/login or restart, your new key mappings will take effect and you will be able to seamlessly go from Mac to PC or PC to Mac without annoying keyboard shortcut gaffes.
You can use SharpKeys to remap any keys you want, so if there are other ways you feel you can make your Windows keyboarding experience easier, then you now know how to do that. Remember, once you remap “Control” to “Windows”, any and all shortcuts that depend upon it will be rely on the “Windows” key instead.

A Mac’s keyboard layout just isn’t quite right for Windows. Whether you’re primarily a Windows user or primarily an OS X user, the layout doesn’t feel quite right when you run Windows in Boot Camp — but you can fix that.
There are several possible ways you might want to rearrange these keyboard shortcuts depending on what you’re used to. All it takes is a few clicks with SharpKeys and you’ll feel more at home in Boot Camp
The Problem
Mac keyboard layouts are subtly different from PC keyboard layouts. On a typical PC keyboard, the bottom-left corner of the keyboard contains keys in this order: Ctrl, Windows, Alt. On a Mac keyboard, you’ll see the following layout: Control, Option, Command. In Boot Camp, these keys function as Control, Alt, Windows.
In other words, the Alt and Windows key are swapped from where you’d expect them to be. Worse yet, Mac users will have to use the Control key for various keyboard shortcuts that require the Command key on Mac OS X.
There has to be a way to fix this — and there is. We’ll be using SharpKeys to remap these keys in Windows. SharpKeys is an easy-to-use, open-source graphical program that creates the appropriate Windows registry entries to remap keys. You could actually do this all in the registry editor if you like — it just takes more work. This utility works on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and even older versions of Windows.
Solution 1: If You’re Used to Mac Shortcuts
If you’re used to Mac keyboard shortcuts, you may want to make the Command key function as the Control key. You’ll then be able to use Mac keyboard shortcuts like Command+C, X, or V for Copy, Cut, and Paste in Windows. Pressing Command+L will focus the location bar in your web browser on Windows just as it does on OS X — without the remapping, that Command+L shortcut equals Windows Key+L, which will lock your Windows system.
To do this, install SharpKeys and launch it. Click the Add button and click “Type Key” under the “From key” column on the left. Press the left Command key. Next, click the “Type Key” button under the “To key” column on the right. Press the Control key.
Click OK and click “Write to Registry.” Log out and log in or reboot to activate your changes. Your left Command key will function as a second Control key, which means many Mac Command key shortcuts will just work like you’d expect them to. If you need to press the Windows key, press the Command key on the right side of your keyboard instead.
Solution 2: If You’re Used to Windows Shortcuts
If you’re used to Windows keyboard shortcuts, you’ll probably want to swap the Option/Alt Key with the Command/Windows key. This will change the order from Control, Alt, Windows to Control, Windows, Alt — the same order you’ll find on a standard Windows keyboard. The muscle memory you’ve built up for keyboard shortcuts won’t fail you.
To do this, install SharpKeys and launch it. Click the Add button. Scroll down in the left column and select “Special: Left Alt.” Next, click the “Type Key” button under “To key” on the right. Press the Command key at the right side of your keyboard and then click OK.
Next, click the Add button again. Click “Type Key” under the “From key” column on the left. Press the left Command key. Scroll down in the “To key” column on the right and select “Special: Right Alt.” Click OK and click “Write to Registry.”
Log out and log back in, or reboot your Mac. The Alt/Option key will function as a Windows key and the Command key will function as the Alt key. This means the layout at the left side of your keyboard will be Control, Windows, Alt — just like on Windows.
Solution 3: Make Mac OS X’s Keyboard Shortcuts Match Windows
You could instead adjust your keyboard shortcuts in Mac OS X so they work more like they do in Windows. For example, you could swap the Control and Command keys in Mac OS X — then you’d press Control+C, X, or V to Copy, Cut, and Paste in Mac OS X, just as you would on Windows.
To do this, boot into Mac OS X, click the Apple menu on the menu bar, and select System Preferences. Click the Keyboard icon, click the Modifier Keys button, and swap the Control and Command key functions. You can also easily disable the Caps Lock key from here.
If you decide you don’t like the keyboard remapping you chose, you can open SharpKeys up again, delete the rules you created, and click “Write to Registry.” Everything will be back to normal after you log out and log back in or reboot.
Puoi modificare i seguenti quattro tasti modificatori: “Caps Lock”, “Control”, “Option” e “Command”.

Todavía no hemos terminado.

I Windows
If you want the keys on your keyboard to something else than the usual, then read up on how to remap them in Windows 10 using the free SharpKeys utility.
Most of us are happy with a keyboard in its out-of-the-box condition. And if we aren’t, we usually put up with its quirks and inconveniences. These can range from accessibility issues to regional incompatibilities and, of course, just plain old preference. But for those who can’t tolerate our keyboards being inefficient or incorrect, there’s a solution: SharpKeys.
SharpKeys 3.6 is another gem I found among many on the Github website, such as the HOSTS File editor, making it easier to edit your Windows Host file without all the hassle involved. Like the HOST file editor, SharpKeys takes functionality that exists in Windows 10—remapping your keyboard keys—but makes it easy enough for the everyday user to do it on the fly. With SharpKeys, you can quickly and easily reassign your keyboard key to another key or make it into a shortcut to launch an application or perform some other Windows function. I’ll show you how to get started.
Use SharpKeys 3.6 to Change What Keys Do
First of all, what does SharpKeys do? SharpKeys lets you remap common keys on your keyboard for other functions. For instance, you can make your Caps Lock key become your new Shift key and vice versa. This utility exposes a hidden function already built into Windows; SharpKey makes it easy for you and me to change which key we want to use with a few simple clicks. Before we get started, it’s important to list what it can and cannot do. Here is what the site’s description says:
Things that SharpKeys will do:
- Map an entire key to any other key – e.g., you could remap Caps Lock to a Shift key.
- Remap more than one key to one single key – e.g., you could remap every key on a keyboard to the letter Q
- Force you to look for the Left or Right ALT key in the list of available keys because Type Key cannot scan for ALT
Things that SharpKeys will not do:
- Allow you to swap two keys with each other – e.g., you can’t have Q and Z swap places because the remapping code would get confused.
- Map multiple key presses to one key – e.g., it will not support any attempt to remap Ctrl+C to the F5 key.
- Map mouse clicks to any key.
- Support certain hardware keys that never make it to Windows – e.g., Logitech’s volume buttons or most Fn keys
- Support multiple mappings for different users – the Windows key being tweaked is for an entire machine.
- Protect you from yourself – if you disable your DEL key and can’t log in because Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn’t work now, you’ll have to reformat Source.
Some perfect points to keep in mind when using SharpKeys. Don’t get crazy using it. SharpKeys 3.6 is a small download, less than 600 KBs. The MSI installer had me up and running in seconds.
After installation, launch Start, click SharpKeys under Recently added, or look under the S group in All apps.
SharpKeys greets you with a small note reminding users that the app supports versions as far back as Windows 2000 (if you’re crazy enough to use Windows 2000 still).
The interface is not particularly intuitive, but once you figure it out, it’s pretty easy. To begin, click the Add button, which will bring up another user interface.
Select a key in the left pane you want to map to another key, app, or window. For example, I want my Shift key to open My Computer. Click in the right pane, scroll down to My Computer, then select that option. Click OK to confirm changes.
Click Write to Registry to confirm changes. You will be prompted to log out or reboot to complete the changes. When I used SharpKeys, signing out and signing back in was enough to write the changes.
So, how did the program do?
Yes, it does work, and I must say, it does add a world of difference to how you use your keyboard to get to things faster. Instead of having to strike multiple keys or reach for the mouse, it’s a definite time-saver.
If at any time you want to remove the changes you made, fire up SharpKeys again, select the assigned key, then click Delete.
Another key I found useful to reassign was the quote key on my laptop, which was originally manufactured for the UK. The @ symbol was assigned to a location among the qwerty keys for what reason I do not know. But I was able to restore it to a more natural location thanks to SharpKeys. So, if you have a keyboard that’s holding you back, give this a spin and let us know how it goes.
Remember, don’t get too crazy and lock yourself out and always maintain a recent backup or system restore point just in case something goes wrong.
This article describes how Windows Explorer handles file and folder permissions in different situations.
Applies to: В Windows 10 – all editions, Windows Server 2012 R2
Original KB number: В 310316
Summary
In Microsoft Windows 2000, in Windows Server 2003, and in Windows XP, you have the option of using either the FAT32 file system or the NTFS file system. When you use NTFS, you can grant permissions to your folders and files to control access to those objects. When you copy or move a file or folder on an NTFS volume, how Windows Explorer handles the permissions on the object varies, depending on whether the object is copied or moved within the same NTFS volume or to a different volume.
More information
By default, an object inherits permissions from its parent object, either at the time of creation or when it is copied or moved to its parent folder. The only exception to this rule occurs when you move an object to a different folder on the same volume. In this case, the original permissions are retained.
Additionally, note the following rules:
The Everyone group is granted Allow Full Control permissions to the root of each NTFS drive.
Deny permissions always take precedence over Allow permissions.
Explicit permissions take precedence over inherited permissions.
If NTFS permissions conflict, for example, if group and user permissions are contradictory, the most liberal permissions take precedence.
Permissions are cumulative.
To preserve permissions when files and folders are copied or moved, use the Xcopy.exe utility with the /O or the /X switch.
The object’s original permissions will be added to inheritable permissions in the new location.
To add an object’s original permissions to inheritable permissions when you copy or move an object, use the Xcopy.exe utility with the -O and -X switches.
To preserve existing permissions without adding inheritable permissions from the parent folder, use the Robocopy.exe utility, which is available in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
You can modify how Windows Explorer handles permissions when objects are copied or moved to another NTFS volume. When you copy or move an object to another volume, the object inherits the permissions of its new folder. However, if you want to modify this behavior to preserve the original permissions, modify the registry as follows.
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
Locate and then click the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer .
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
- Value name: ForceCopyAclwithFile
- Data type: DWORD
- Value data: 1
Exit Registry Editor.
You can modify how Windows Explorer handles permissions when objects are moved in the same NTFS volume. As mentioned, when an object is moved within the same volume, the object preserves its permissions by default. However, if you want to modify this behavior so that the object inherits the permissions from the parent folder, modify the registry as follows:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
Locate and then click the registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer .
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
- Value name: MoveSecurityAttributes
- Data type: DWORD
- Value data: 0
Exit Registry Editor.
Make sure that the user account that is used to move the object has the Change Permissions permission set. If the permission is not set, grant the Change Permissions permission to the user account.
The MoveSecurityAttributes registry value only applies to Windows XP and to Windows Server 2003. The value does not affect Windows 2000.
I Windows

This guide for customizing Windows can be useful even if you don’t use macOS
If you’re like me, you might be working on a different PC than you’re typically used to and wish there was some way to adjust it. Well, you’re in luck because I’ve got a handful of tips that will not only make Windows look better but will help you learn to love the operating system in a way you haven’t felt since the XP glory days.
This article is mainly for people switching to Windows 10 from macOS. However, if you’re a regular Windows user, you may not have heard of some of these useful tweaks.
A centred and transparent Taskbar
The Taskbar is the home for all of your open apps, notifications toggles, the Start menu and much more. While there are some customization options built into Windows to tweak how it looks, if you want to make it look modern, you need to download third-party apps.
I use one called TaskbarX that cost $1.39 CAD, but there are some other options out there, depending on what you’re looking for. TaskbarX does two main things: it centers your Taskbar icons and it makes the Taskbar transparent. To me, this looks a lot better, primarily when you hide the ‘Search’ bar. For macOS users, this makes the UI feature act a little more like the operating system they’re used to.
You can also turn the Taskbar into a solid colour or make it fogged if you want. If you want to take things to the next level, you can even adjust precisely where you want the icons if you want them off-set.
One thing I will mention is that when the Taskbar is transparent, it’s hard to read the text in the bottom left and right corners, depending on your wallpaper. You can mitigate this sometimes by switching from light to dark mode, but some wallpapers are just not going to work.
Automatic light and dark mode
As I was saying above, since light and dark modes change the colour of the text on the Taskbar you may not want to enable this if you’re using TaskbarX and an intricate wallpaper.
If you’re not and you just want an easy way to schedule dark mode to come on at night and light mode to enable in the morning, download Luna. This is a free app you can grab from GitHub, and it’s straightforward to use.
Once you install it, you just choose a time for the OS to switch into light mode and another time for dark mode. I decided 7am and 8pm respectively.
You can also allow Luna to switch the theme of Windows apps and the system theme to get a more cohesive experience.
You can get the wallpaper to change at the scheduled time as well. This helps if you’re using TaskbarX.
Luna is an easy tool to use, the only bad part is that many third-party apps don’t switch their light and dark themes automatically yet. Right now, apps like Slack, Facebook Messenger still don’t change when you shift the Windows theme.
Re-mapping Alt to act like Cmd on Mac
Remapping keyboard keys is something that’s strangely missing from default Windows, but with a handy app called SharpKeys, you can solve this problem in a few minutes.
Anyone who moves between Windows and Mac knows that it’s pretty annoying to have to unlearn the muscle memory of each operating system’s shortcut keys. So if you’re a Mac user who’s shifting over to Windows, it’s useful to swap the powers of the Alt and Ctrl keys.
Once you have the app open, you’ll need to click on ‘Add.’ Then, scroll down and select ‘Special: left Alt (00_38)’ in the ‘From’ column. In the ‘To’ section choose ‘Special: Left Ctrl(00_1D).’ You can also hit the ‘Type Key’ button and just tap the keys you’re looking for on your keyboard, but this didn’t work for me, so your mileage may vary.
This will make the left Ctrl key act as the Alt button. You’ll need to add another line to SharpKeys that’s the exact opposite of the first one to make Alt act like Ctrl. You’ll also need to repeat this process two more times for the right Ctrl and Alt keys.
Once you’ve done all of that, your SharpKeys app should look similar to the screenshot above and you can click ‘Write to Registry’ and then close the app. The last thing to do is restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Organize the Start Menu
The final thing you can do to make Windows a little easier is to organize the Start Menu. When you start up a clean install of Windows, there are often random games and apps that you can get rid of to make things a little easier to navigate.
There are two sections in the Start Menu — the left side is the proper Start Menu, and the right side is called the ‘App list.’
You can’t customize the Start Menu, unfortunately, but you can clean it up. The first thing you want to do is get rid of some of the random folders. Often when you download apps from the internet, they install themselves as a folder with a few random apps and files alongside the app you want.
For example, I downloaded the game Apex Legends onto my P, which resulted in a folder called Apex Legends appearing in my start menu with a tech support document, the privacy policy and a user agreement. Luckily enough, it’s easy to get rid of all the bloat.
You just need to dive into your program files and delete and move a few things. The Start Menu is just a fancy way to display the files in your computer’s ‘Program Files’ and ‘Program Files (x86)’ folders. So if you organize those folders, the changes will be reflected on the Start Menu.
In my experience, there are a few folders and apps that don’t go away, but you can clean this area up considerably by moving apps from within folders and into the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.
The other side of the Start Menu is much more customizable. All you need to do is right-click on an app and choose ‘Pin to Start.’ The app then appears as a tile in App List. You can resize and place tiles here to your heart’s content. I’ve opted to replace the items I had pinned to my Mac Dock in this space, but you can do whatever you want.
You can also resize tiles to make some cooler layouts and you can re-colour them in the Windows Settings ‘Personalization’ menu.
Najprej pritisnite levi gumb “Control” v levem stolpcu, nato pritisnite tipko “Windows” v desnem stolpcu.

If you’re like pretty much everyone, you probably have many windows open every time you use your Mac.
It might be a group of Word documents, a host of browser windows, or collection of pictures — whatever the case, having too many windows open means frustration when it comes time to switch between them.
If you have too many windows open, finding the file, webpage, or document you want at any given moment can take a surprisingly long time. That is, unless you know a few Mac keyboard shortcuts that make navigating between windows quick and easy.

How to quickly switch between windows on a Mac
There are several ways to switch windows on your Mac.
First of all, if you hit the F3 key (in the very top row on your keyboard), your windows will shrink so you can see them all. If you have multiple monitors, each monitor will show all the windows currently on that screen.
Once you’re in this view, you can click any window to switch to it, or press F3 again to return to your current window.
You can also switch windows using your Command key. Try hitting Command + Tab — a pop-up will appear showing every app that currently has windows open on your computer. Press Tab to cycle through them, and release Command when you’ve highlighted the one you want to switch to.
While you’re holding the Command key, tapping the tilde key will bring you to the next window of the same type. This is great if you’re working with lots of windows in the same program, like Word documents.
Finally, if you’re using a MacBook, swiping up on the trackpad with three or four fingers (depending on your settings) will open Mission Control, which shows all the windows that you have open. If this isn’t working, make sure it’s enabled in the “Trackpad” section of System Preferences.

Here’s how you can modify Hosts files in Windows 10, and map domain names to server IP addresses of your choice.
- Open Notepad with administrator privileges
- Browse to C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts (Or paste this into the address bar)
- Open the file
- Make your changes
Windows 10 still retains the old computing standard of having a hosts file for rudimentary hostname mapping. In simpler terms, the hosts file provides a mechanism to map domain names (such as “onmsft.com”) to server IP addresses of your choice.
Windows refers to the hosts file each time it connects over a network using a hostname. If it finds an entry for the hostname in the hosts file, it will contact the server specified in the file. Otherwise – and in the vast majority of cases – it will resolve the hostname using DNS (domain name service), which is the process used on the Internet to obtain the server IP address behind a domain name.
While it may sound technical, the hosts file is a really simple approach to network routing – and it’s easy to add your own entries. To get started, you just need to open the file. It resides in Windows’ internal “System32” folder, so to save your edits you’ll need administrator access.
The quickest way to open the file is using Notepad with administrator privileges. Search for Notepad (press the Start button and type its name) and right-click the app to display the context menu. Click “Run as administrator” to launch a privileged instance of the app. Note you may need to reauthenticate yourself or get an administrator’s password if you’re not already logged in as one.
With Notepad open in administrator mode, you’re ready to open the file. Click File > Open and browse to the file at C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts (you can copy and paste this into the address bar at the top of the Open window). If you do browse through the folders graphically, remember to change the file type filter to “All Files” so the hosts file shows up.
Now you’re ready to edit the file. If you’ve never opened the hosts file before, all you’ll see is a short section of text describing its purpose and how to make edits. The introduction provides a useful overview of how the file is structured, but we’ll cover the basics here.
The hosts file is a simple mapping of IP addresses and hostnames. Each entry goes on a newline, with the IP address (that’s the numerical address) first, followed by a space or tab character and then the hostname (or domain). You can add comments to the file by placing a “#” character at the start of the line – this will make Windows ignore the line when reading the file.
Therefore, if you want to point “microsoft.com” to the IP 1.2.3.4, you’d write “1.2.3.4 microsoft.com” on a new line. Each time you try to visit microsoft.com, you’ll find yourself instead at the (non-existent) 1.2.3.4 website.
At this point, you may be wondering why you’d ever need to edit the hosts file. While it is more useful to technical users, there are also a few more general cases in which it might have value. One example is if you wanted to block a certain website, for example Google. By adding an entry for “google.com” to the hosts file, you can force Windows to point the address to a different location – so users won’t be able to visit the site.
To achieve this example, add a line such as “0.0.0.0 www.google.com” to the file. Save the file and try and visit Google in your browser. You should find the site fails to load.
Remember that this is a far from infallible way to block a site – another user could simply reverse the hosts file edit themselves. In addition, some software may employ its own techniques to lookup hostnames which might ignore the hosts file.
One far more realistic application of the hosts file is to block websites which serve up ads or spyware. Although we won’t be listing any here, if you map the addresses of prominent ad providers to an unused internal IP address (such as 127.0.0.1), you’ll suddenly be browsing an ad-free internet – in every browser.
Windows will resolve the ad URLs to an address that no longer points to the providers’ servers. Just remember that every address you add must be the hostname only (example.com), not the full web address (http://www.example.com).
That’s all about the hosts file. While you’re unlikely to use it outside of a development or network environment, it does have practical applications which could be of use to every PC consumer. You should also know that the hosts file also exists on Mac and Linux systems with the same syntax, albeit in a different location.

Newcomers and old pros alike use Windows keyboards with Macs. Why toss a perfectly good keyboard just because you switched platforms? Some people just prefer how the keys feel to the ones Apple supplies. Any wired USB keyboard or Bluetooth-based wireless keyboard will work fine with a Mac.
In fact, Apple even sells the Mac Mini without a keyboard or mouse. There’s just one little problem with using a non-Apple keyboard: figuring out some of the keyboard equivalents.
Windows and Mac Keyboard Differences
At least five keys have different names or symbols on a Windows keyboard than they do on a Mac keyboard, which can make it difficult to follow Mac-related instructions. For example, a software manual may tell you to hold down the command key ( ⌘ ), which appears to be missing from your Windows keyboard. It’s there; it just looks a little different.
Here are the five most commonly used special keys on a Mac and their Windows keyboard equivalents.
Mac Key
Windows Key
Use these to control various Mac functions, including using Mac OS X startup shortcuts.
Another helpful bit of information for new Mac users is to know which menu key symbols correspond to which keys on the keyboard. The symbols used in the Mac menus can be a bit strange to those new to the Mac, as well as old hands who may be more mousers than keyboard users.
The Command and Option Key Swap
Besides Windows and Mac keyboards having slightly different names, they also swap the positions of two often-used modifier keys: the Command and Option keys.
If you’re a long-time Mac user transitioning to a Windows keyboard, the Windows key, which is equivalent to the Mac’s Command key, may occupy the physical position of the Option key on a Mac keyboard. Likewise, the Windows keyboard’s Alt key is where you expect to find the Mac’s Command key. If you’re used to using the modifier keys from your old Mac keyboard, you’re likely to run into trouble for a while as you relearn the key locations.
How to Reassign Key Locations on a Mac
Instead of having to relearn key locations, use the Keyboard pane in System Preferences to reassign the modifier keys.
Launch System Preferences by clicking its icon in the Dock, or clicking the Apple menu on the left side of the menu bar then selecting System Preferences.
In the System Preferences window that opens, select the Keyboard preference pane.
Click the Modifier Keys button.
Use the pop-up menu next to the Option and Command keys to select the action you wish the modifier keys to perform. In this example, you want the Option key (the Alt key on a Windows keyboard) to execute the Command action, and the Command key (the Windows key on a Windows keyboard) to perform the Option action.
Don’t worry if this sounds a bit confusing, it will make more sense when you see the drop-down pane in front of you. Also, if things get a bit mixed up, click the Restore Defaults button to put everything back the way it was.
Make your changes and click the OK button, then close System Preferences.
With the modifier keys remapped, you shouldn’t have any problems using any Windows keyboard with your Mac.
Keyboard Shortcuts
People new to the Mac but proficient using keyboard shortcuts to speed up their workflow may be a little taken aback by the notation used in the Mac’s menu system to indicate when a keyboard shortcut is available.
If a keyboard shortcut is available for a menu item, the shortcut will be displayed next to the menu item using the following notation:
