If you’re a PlayStation 4 owner of any variety (regular, Slim, or Pro), you probably woke up today to an annoying Destiny 2 ad right there in your recent games bar. That’s pretty obnoxious, so here’s how to prevent it from happening again in the future.

From the PS4’s action bar, find the Settings icon. It’s a little suitcase-looking thing.

I pay for PS Plus. Why is this even a thing?

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

As you might know (if you read last weekend’s Open Forum), I got the kids a PlayStation 4 for Christmas. What a fun experience that was, until I got around to setting it up for them.

The TL;DR version goes: Four hours of tinkering on family accounts ironed out most (not all) of the problems encountered during installation. My advice, don’t even call Sony tech support on Christmas Day.

In any event, after the hassle of setting up their new console last night, I discovered this morning that one of them had apparently bought Destiny 2. Of course, they both swore it wasn’t them.

Right. Well, it sure wasn’t me.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

So I figured that since one of them had bought it on my dime (intentionally or not), I’d go ahead and play it for a minute. However, when I went to the icon to start it, instead of saying “Start,” it said, “Buy Now.”

Wait. Was this an ad?

I go fire up my Pro, and sure enough. There is a Destiny icon on my home screen too. Apparently, Sony has found it fit to begin placing ads, on my crossbar (X-bar) even though I have a subscription to PlayStation Plus.

My home screen already has so many applications that they don’t all fit on the X-bar. Ads just take up space and make me have to fetch content from the library. Fortunately, this annoyance is straightforward to remove.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Go to your settings and select “System” (second option from the bottom). On the next screen click on Automatic downloads.

On that screen you will see a selection at the top that says, “Featured Content: Automatically add download links for featured content to the home screen.”

I’m not sure if this was there before, but if it was, it is now checked by default. Just uncheck it.

When you are back on the home screen delete the ad icon and things will go back to normal.

Thanks goes out to Jason Schreier at Kotaku for the tip.

Here is what you’ll see on the home screen of your PS4™ system.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Sony’s PlayStation 4 offers button remapping for its DualShock 4 controllers. If you don’t like a game’s control scheme, you’re free to switch the buttons around and make it more comfortable. The game doesn’t even need to offer its own button-remapping.

There’s a good chance you’ll never stumble on this feature unless you hear about it somewhere, as Sony categorizes this as an “accessibility” feature. Here’s what you need to know about how it works:

  • This change is made at the operating system level, and games aren’t aware of it. For example, let’s say you’re playing a game and the on-screen prompts tell you to press “X.” If you’ve remapped the Circle button to function as X, the game will still tell you to press “X.” However, you’ll actually need to press the Circle button on your controller. The PS4 will then send an “X” input to the game. Games aren’t aware that you’ve remapped buttons, so you’ll need to remember which button you’ve mapped as which.
  • Your new button mapping layout affects all games. You can’t just change a profile for one specific game. However, you can quickly enable or disable your custom button mappings from the Settings screen if you want to disable it for certain games.
  • Each user profile has its own button-remapping settings. If you have multiple profiles on your PS4, you can configure button remapping on one profile and it won’t affect other user profiles.

With that in mind, let’s talk about how to accomplish this.

How to Remap Your PS4 Controller’s Buttons

To find these settings, sign into a profile on your PS4 and press the PlayStation button on the controller to access the home screen.

Press “Up” on the controller to access the bar of icons on the top of the screen, select the “Settings” icon, and press the “X” button.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Select the “Accessibility” category on the Setting screen that appears and press “X.”

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Scroll down on the Accessibility screen, select “Button Assignments,” and press “X.”

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Activate the “Enable Custom Button Assignments” option by pressing “X.”

You’ll see a “Customize Button Assignments” option appear here. Select it and press “X.”

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

The Customize Button Assignment screen allows you to remap one button to another. The button on the left represents the physical button on your controller, while the button on the right represents how the PS4 interprets it. For example, the first button here is “Triangle -> Triangle.” This means that, when you press the Triangle button on your controller, the console interprets that as a Triangle button press.

Let’s say you want to swap Triangle and Square around. You’d select “Triangle -> Triangle” and press “X.” You can then choose “Square” from the list that appears. That button press will now read “Triangle -> Square.” This means that, when you press the Triangle button on your controller, the PS4 will interpret this as a Square button press. The Square button can then be configured to function as Triangle, or you can remap other buttons.

When you’re done, select “Confirm” to leave this screen and save your changes.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

The PlayStation 4 allows you to remap the Triangle, Circle, X, Square, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left stick, Right stick, L1, R1, L2, R2, L3, and R3 buttons. For Left stick and Right stick, you can only swap the sticks–for example, you could make the Left stick’s directional input function as the Right stick’s, and vice versa.

The buttons are all labelled on your PS4’s controller, except the L3 and R3 buttons. The L3 button involves “clicking” or pressing the left stick down, while the R3 button means “clicking” or pressing the right stick down.

How to Check Your Button Assignments

You can always revisit the Button Assignments screen later to see a graphic displaying your custom button assignments. If you need to check while playing a game, you can just press the PlayStation button and navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Button Assignments. You can then return to the game and immediately resume right where you left off.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

How to Disable Custom Button Assignments

To disable your custom button setup, just revisit the Button Assignments screen and de-activate the “Enable Custom Button Assignments” setting. Your custom button layout will be saved, so you can re-activate this setting later and resume using the last button assignment profile you created without setting it up from scratch.

It would be nice if the PlayStation 4 allowed you to automatically load button-mapping profiles load when you launch a specific game, but that feature isn’t available. But this is still a big improvement from being unable to customize your controls in console games.

While many websites depend on revenue coming from ad banner impressions and clicks, it’s a fact that some of these ads can be very annoying, and in a few cases, even malicious. Some ads are created by rogue pop-up pages, while others automatically start playing video or audio clips. Many more are guilty of just taking up too much of your phone’s resources with overused animations.

What if you wanted to block ads on Android? Thankfully, there are several ways you can do that, and a couple of them just require that you make a few setting changes in your Chrome web browser.

QUICK ANSWER

You can block ads on your Android phone by opening Chrome and tapping on the three-dot menu button. Go to Settings > Site settings > Ads and turn the toggle on.

JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

Editor’s note: We’ve put together these instructions using a Pixel 4a with 5G running Android 12. Keep in mind that steps might differ depending on your device and the Android version it’s running.

Block pop up pages and ads in Chrome

If you use Chrome as your default web browser on your Android phone, and most of you do, you should be aware that in 2018, Google announced that Chrome would block all ads on websites if they use full-page interstitials. Sites would also see ads blocked on Chrome if they unexpectedly play sounds or use a lot of flashing-style animation. However, some sites still use pop-ups to generate ads, and thankfully there’s a way to combat them in Chrome.

Block ads, pop-ups, and redirects on Chrome:

  1. Open up the Chrome browser.
  2. Tap on the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  3. Tap on Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the Site Settings selection, and tap on it.
  5. Go into Pop-ups and redirects.
  6. Make sure the toggle is turned on.
  7. Go back to the Site settings section.
  8. Tap on Ads.
  9. Make sure the toggle is turned on.

If you’re like me, you might have opened up your Windows 10 laptop today only to see a giant ad for Square Enix’s Rise of the Tomb Raider plastered across your login screen. This is the work of the “Windows Spotlight” feature in your Personalization settings, and thankfully, you can turn it off for good.

Side note: Even if you’re a Tomb Raider fan, you probably shouldn’t buy it from the Windows Store as your lock screen would suggest.

To remove Windows 10’s lock screen ads, click on your Start menu, and open up the Settings app:

From here a menu will drop down, where you can choose from the two options “I want more!” and “Not a fan.”. The LG CX family of OLED screens offers the most astounding image quality I’ve ever seen from any display or monitor, OLED or LCD alike. I picked one up for myself last year both as part of covering the Xbox Series X and because, after 15 years of wanting one, I felt like OLEDs had finally become affordable enough to justify the purchase.

According to The Verge, however, LG at least occasionally plays full-sound video ads when it feels like doing so, including while you’re attempting to download app updates.

Just got served a legit commercial while updating the apps on my LG OLED TV.

This isn’t the future I signed up for. pic.twitter.com/TmQflsCxsl

— Chris Welch (@chriswelch) March 10, 2021

The problem may have begun last summer. Reports on LG Smart TVs including ads more generally date back to late 2019. This kind of grasping, greedy monetization reflects the fact that corporations will stop at nothing to carpet-bomb consumers with ads, even when doing so degrades the customer experience. Luckily, you don’t have to put up with this. There are two basic ways to stop it.

Method 1: Stop Using ‘Smart’ TV Features

The primary purpose of your TV, from the modern manufacturer’s perspective, is to hoover up as much information about your viewing habits as possible and relay it back to the company. One way to prevent this is by refusing to connect your TV to the internet except when absolutely necessary. My LG CX 55-inch TV has been online once in the five months since I bought it. Enabling full compatibility with the Xbox Series X and getting 120fps and FreeSync operational required an OS update. Once done, I turned the Wi-Fi off and deleted the network password off the TV.

What have I lost access to as a result? Absolutely nothing. I can boot the TV and Xbox (or TV + PC) and be watching content on the service of my choice in seconds. If I want to stream services off a PC, I use the PC connected to the TV. If I want to game, I game. The TV handles PC and Xbox gaming and streaming beautifully and I have no reason to think it wouldn’t work just as seamlessly with a PS4 or PS5. I have full access to all of its internal features related to color and picture quality and absolutely zero chance of being force-fed advertising while I’m changing settings.

Method #1 is my own preferred solution to this problem, but I have no use for “smart” TVs in the first place. Not everyone feels similarly. Some people want to be able to use the features they paid for without watching a bunch of ads. If you fall into this group, you’ve got your own set of options:

Method 2: Block Ads at the Router

LG CX owners who believe their relationship with LG starts and stops at the point where you pay them money and they hand you a TV have options to block this kind of spam. This great Reddit thread details how to block adware on multiple TV brands, including those made by Samsung and LG. There’s also information on blocking ads on a Roku and Amazon’s Fire Stick. Sony and Android TVs are also covered.

There is no reason why the manufacturer of your television should be allowed to show you ads in a time, place, or manner of their choosing. Televised ads, if you recall, were once offered in very specific places — we called them “commercial breaks” — during which it was your opportunity to use the restroom, get a drink, make popcorn, or perform some other task that didn’t involve paying attention to whatever somebody wanted to sell you. Today, companies pretend that buying a $5 widget means you’ve asked to be advertised to and tracked across devices forever. You haven’t. So don’t put up with it.

LG device owners should block the following addresses at the router:

If you can’t block addresses at the router (most can, but not all), connecting to the internet through a different device as in Method #1 or using an ad-blocking bit of software like Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi or other low-power device is also a solution.

Buying a product from a company does not automatically indicate an interest or desire to hear from the company again. It does not invite the beginning of a relationship in which one party is free to annoy the other with advertisements, any more than exchanging a friendly greeting with a stranger invites them to move into your home. I absolutely recommend the LG CX, but only if you intend to use it as a dumb display or otherwise block its advertising. I do not consider an LG CX a good deal at $1,500 if it only comes in “Mandatory LG Advertising” flavor and would require at least a $750 price cut before I’d recommend it.

What to Know

  • For a soft reset, use a working controller to go to Settings >Devices >Bluetooth Devices.
  • Highlight the controller you want to reset, press the Options button, then select Forget Device.
  • For a hard reset, use a straightened paperclip to press the button inside the small hole on the back of the controller for five seconds.

This article explains how to reset a PS4 controller. Instructions apply to the official DualShock 4 controller.

How to Reset Your PS4 Controller

A “soft reset” generally refers to turning a computer or device off and then on again, which flushes out memory and can correct many issues. In doing a PS4 controller soft reset, we’ll also reset the connection between the controller and the console. However, you can only do this if you have a second PS4 controller. If you don’t have an extra controller, skip ahead to the directions on performing a hard reset.

Log in with your second (working) controller and navigate to the Settings in the PS4’s top menu. This is the option that looks like a suitcase.

Press the Options button on your controller, found to the right of the touchpad. This will bring up a new menu.

Now that we’ve forgotten the malfunctioning DualShock 4 controller, we want to power down the PS4. You can do this by holding down the PS4 button on your controller, navigating to Power in the menu and choosing Turn off PS4.

Connect your misbehaving DualShock 4 controller to the PS4 using a USB cable.

Turn on the PS4 and wait for it to boot up.

Press the PlayStation button on the controller and login to the PS4. The PlayStation 4 controller should now be paired and you can test to see if it’s still misbehaving.

How to Hard Reset a PS4 Controller

A hard reset is when a device is reverted back to its factory default settings, which is basically how it came out of the box. Thankfully, this is easy to do with the DualShock 4 controller, but we’ll need a paper clip or something similar to reset your PS4 controller.

Hold down this button for about 5 seconds.

Connect the controller to the PS4 using a USB cable.

Turn on the PS4 and wait for it to boot up.

Press the PlayStation button on the controller to log into the PS4. The light bar should turn blue indicating the DualShock 4 has paired with the console.

These instructions may not work for a modded PS4 controller. If you have trouble following the directions, consult the manufacturer of your controller.

Still Having Problems With Your PS4 Controller?

If you are still having problems with your controller, try restarting your router or modem. Remember, you’ll lose Internet access, so warn anyone in the house before doing this step.

If you were unable to sync your PS4 controller, run through the steps for doing a hard reset with the router or modem turned off. If you paired your device but it is still erratic, try using it with the router and modem off. If it works, you need to change the Wi-Fi channel on your router.

Depending on your viewpoint, personalized ads–the kind that track your activity on the web to provide more relevant ads–can be either handy or manipulative and creepy. If you’re in the latter camp and would rather see generic ads than ones based on your last search query, you can at least opt out of personalized ads for Microsoft sites and Windows apps.

Microsoft and other companies use cookies to track the sites you’ve visited, searches you’ve done, and other online activities. If you’ve recently been researching your next trip to the Caribbean, for example, you’ll likely see some ads for Caribbean cruises in your Bing search results or Facebook feed. The personalized ads can be helpful by showing you deals you might be interested in, but they can also make you spend more money than you intend to. They can also share sensitive information with third parties depending on what you search for.

Microsoft lets you disable personalized ads in three areas: the ads connected to your Microsoft account, ads on Microsoft sites and partner sites, and ads in Windows. Here’s how to opt out of personalized ads for all three.

Turn Off Personalized Ads in Your Browser and Microsoft Account

1. Navigate to https://choice.microsoft.com (opens in new tab) in your web browser.

2. Toggle off “Personalized ads in this browser”. This forces Microsoft to show generic ads when you’re on sites like MSN.com, Outlook.com, Bing search, and other Microsoft-related sites and partners, including those owned by AOL.

3. Toggle off “Personalized ads wherever I use my Microsoft account.” This disables personalized ads for any site or app you sign on with your Microsoft account, such as Xbox, Windows, and Windows phone.

Turn Off Personalized Ads in Windows Apps

If you don’t want to see personalized ads in Windows apps or Windows devices (even if you’re not signed in with a Microsoft account):

1. Open Settings. You can do this from the Start menu in Windows.

2. Click on Privacy.

3. Turn off “Let apps use my advertising ID for experiences across apps.”

Note that even after opting out of the settings above Microsoft and Windows apps can still collect data about your online activity unless you use an ad blocker or other privacy tools. The settings above, however, will prevent the ads you from drawing on your search history or sites you’ve recently visited.

The PlayStation 4 is not only a gaming console, but it also offers a social feature allowing you to communicate with your online friends through text chat.

While a controller is not as convenient to use when texting like a touchscreen or even a keyboard, Sony has programmed the DualShock 4 controller to function somewhat like a mouse and keyboard or touchscreen, allowing users to copy and paste their text into a text box.

You can also connect a keyboard and mouse to your PS4 to help you type more smoothly.

How to copy and paste on a PS4

1. Boot up your PS4 gaming console.

2. Open up something on the console that uses text, then place the cursor at the start of the text you want to copy, and then press the Options button (. ) on the text box under the Space bar.

3. Choose “Select” or “Select All.” If you choose “Select,” the next step you will need to do is move the cursor to the end of the text you want to copy, and then press the cross (X) button on your DualShock 4 controller.

4. Then select “Copy.”

5. Click on the “Options” (. ) again in the text box then select “Paste” to move the text you copied.

6. Select “Paste” and the text you copied should appear in the text box.

It’s not surprising that internet users continue to look for ways to block ads on Edge. You’ve probably noticed that just about every time you visit a website, you’re exposed to online advertisements. Some of them are fine, some are intrusive, and many can be annoying; whether they are pop-up ads, audio ads, or video ads that interrupt what you are trying to do. Even worse? They slow down your browser and sometimes dramatically increase page load times.

Thankfully there are simple ways to block Edge ads for good. While we have tens of millions of people using AdBlock, many users are still not aware how effective an ad blocking extension can be to fight back against advertisers, especially on the Edge browser. The new Edge browser in particular allows for a dramatically improved experience over past versions, and AdBlock for the new Edge browser is robust and full of the best ad blocking features available.

  1. Install the new Edge browser
  2. Install AdBlock by visiting getadblock.com from your Edge browser
  3. Congrats! You’re blocking ads in Edge!

Not only is it incredibly simple to use AdBlock to block ads in Edge, we truly believe that AdBlock for Edge is the best tool for blocking annoying and intrusive ads. AdBlock blocks ads on Bing, YouTube, Facebook, and all of your favorite websites. It also protects your Edge browser from malware and blocks advertisers from accessing your browsing history and personal information. AdBlock for Edge users can also customize their settings to allow ads from non-intrusive ads and support reputable content creators.

AdBlock is not the only way you can block ads on Edge. Microsoft allows you to configure your browser settings to tell Edge to limit your exposure to pop-up ads. This won’t block all ads in Edge, but it will hide some of the more intrusive ones. If your primary objective is only to remove pop-up ads from Edge, follow the below steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and navigate to Settings > Site permissions > Pop-ups and redirects
  2. Toggle the Block switch to On (blue)

Please be aware that if you are seeing aggressive pop-ups or the same ad on every webpage you visit, that can be a sign that you’ve downloaded adware. Adware comes in many forms. You may be seeing the same ads on multiple websites, your browser’s homepage may have changed without your consent, or you may even be seeing inappropriate or explicit ads. All of these symptoms point to adware or another form of malware. Here’s how to remove malware or adware if you suspect you’ve been infected.

Luckily, adware is not commonplace. And it’s certainly not as commonplace as online ads, which have never been easier to remove simply by installing AdBlock for Edge. Let us do the heavy lifting and block intrusive Edge ads for you, so you can get back to distraction-free browsing.

Even if its intentions with the inclusion of the software were pure, the Superfish program itself is anything but. Robert Graham, CEO of Errata Security, told IGN that “Lenovo’s users should absolutely be worried about this.”

Graham was able to extract the certificate used by Superfish and crack its password, a process that took him under 3 hours. “By defeating the certificate’s password, when I’m in a cafe where I can eavesdrop on somebody’s wi-fi traffic, I can decrypt it,” he said. That means that a Lenovo user could be surfing the web, believing their information to be safe. In reality, however, someone else could decrypt and capture the data.

What’s The Big Deal?

This situation might not sound dire to some folks—like if you don’t ever use public hotspots, for example. But it’s important that affected Lenovo laptop users remove the Superfish software. As Graham points out on his blog, this software is particularly bad, as “it’s designed to intercept all encrypted connections, things it shouldn’t be able to see”—thus opening up users to all sorts of attacks. For example, the Superfish certificate could sign the certificate for a encrypted browsing session with your bank, which then gives the Superfish application the ability to parse and store that unencrypted data. (In its statement, Lenovo says this doesn’t happen, but this is also the same company that shipped its laptops with this software pre-installed.)

Users who bought their computers before September 2014 may also feel safe, but some reports put the inclusion of the software even earlier. To protect yourself and your information, it’s probably best to take a look and make absolutely sure you aren’t affected.

How to Remove the Software

Given the security implications of the software, Graham recommends removing it and deleting the certificate. Independent Information Management and Security Consultant William Allen explained the process.

“Even though the software that Lenovo included is unwanted and possibly dangerous, it was installed as a standard OEM package,” Allen said. That means it’s compliant with the Windows Control panel uninstaller. If you’ve ever uninstalled a program from a Windows computer you’re already familiar with the process. Allen recommends looking for an application named “VisualDiscovery,” selecting it, and then clicking on “Uninstall” to rid your system of the program.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Removing the application is only one half of the equation, though. The certificate—the part that Graham was able to bend to his will and could conceivably be exploited by anyone with malicious intent—also needs to be taken care of. Allen says to remove the certificate, go to the Windows Certificate Manager by clicking Start/Run or holding down Windows+R to bring up a Run dialog. In the dialog box, enter “certmgr.msc” (minus the quotes).

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Then look for and expand “Trusted Root Certification Authorities.” Click on “Certificates” under that. In the dialog box listing the certificates, find the one called “Superfish,” then right-click it and choose “Delete.” Firefox users need to take an additional step to free themselves from the certificate, a process outlined by Robert Graham on his own blog.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

After ridding your system of both the application and the certificate, you should restart your computer and double-check to make sure they’re gone. You can do this by checking the Programs and Features option within the Control Panel and verifying that “VisualDiscovery” is gone, and loading the Certificate Manager to make sure you no longer see the Superfish one listed.

“Getting rid of the certificate makes it so that even if you are somehow re-infected, your browser will not respect the certificates signed by the potentially malicious third party,” Allen explains.

Of course, the only way to feel 100% secure that Superfish won’t ever come back to haunt you is to do a complete reformatting of the hard drive, followed by a clean reinstallation of Windows. (Don’t use one of the boot-available options to restore your computer to its factory settings—since Superfish is a sanctioned, factory-installed piece of software, it’s highly likely to be part of the recovery image stored on your system.) This, however, should take care of this problem for those who don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of backing up their files and restoring all their settings after a fresh Windows installation.

The other day, I must have unplugged my PS4 before it had turned all the way off. When I started it back up, instead of letting me log in per usual, it displayed a message saying “Cannot start the PS4. Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 using the USB cable, then press the PS button.” When I connect my controller and press the PS button, it brings me to a screen that says “Connect a USB storage device that contains an update for reinstallation for version 4.74 or later. You can download the update file for reinstallation from playstation.com.” I went on the site, downloaded the update file (the 876 MB one) and put it on my USB drive in the right folders per the instructions.

I then plugged the USB into my PS4 and it insstalled the update file. Then, when my PS4 restarted, it took me back to the same screen that told me my PS4 cannot be started, which then takes me to the screen that says to connect a USB drive with the reinstallation file. If I try installing it again, this process repeats ad infinitum.

Then, I restarted in safe mode and selected option 7 to both initialize my PS4 and reinstall the system software. It initalized and reinstalled, and then brought me back to the same “cannot start PS4” and “connect a USB. ” cycle.

Then, I tried to rebuild the database. 30 seconds after I selected this option, it went back to the “cannot start PS4” etc. cycle.

Guided Access is a handy feature in iOS 6 that lets you lock your child into a single app by disabling the hardware buttons on a device. It prevents your child from going hog wild through your iPhone or iPad when you hand it to them for some play time. Guided Access is great until it locks up and you can’t exit from this mode.

In general, iOS devices don’t freeze very often, but some unknown glitch causes Guided Access to lock up occasionally. When this happens, you are stuck in the kids app and can’t get back to the home screen. I’ve had it happen with enough frequency that I’ve bookmarked this handy tip from OS X Daily that shows you how to exit out of a frozen Guided Access device.

When you are stuck in Guided Access mode, you are really stuck as the typical triple tap on the home button to quit out of Guided Access doesn’t work. Even a force quit won’t work because the power button and the home button are disabled. The only way to get out of Guided Access is to press the Home and Power button together for 15 seconds. This will turn off Guided Access by forcibly rebooting your device. Once your device is restarted, you can then go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access > and turn off Guided Access if needed. I usually keep Guided Access off by default and turn it on only when I am handing my iOS device to my children.

Here’s how to stop pop-ups on Android distracting you the next time you’re browsing on your smartphone or tablet

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

Few things are more annoying than when you settle in to read an interesting article you’ve found while surfing on your Android phone only to have an enormous pop-up fly around the screen and block your view. It’s time to put a stop to pop-up ads on Android.

While no pop-up blocking method is 100 percent foolproof, with the right security practices, you can keep most of the digital nuisances away from you the next time you’re browsing the web on your Android phone.

  • How to turn off push notifications on Android and desktop
  • The best ad blockers currently available

How to stop pop-ups in Chrome for Android

1. Open Chrome, the default browser on Android.

2. Tap the More button (the three vertical dots) at the top-right of the screen.

3. Select Settings.

4. Scroll down to Site settings.

5. Press Pop-Ups to get to the slider that turns off pop-ups.

6. Tap the slider button again to disable the feature.

How to stop pop-ups in other Android browsers

If you want more aggressive pop-up or advertisement blocking, then you’ll need to go with a third-party browser. Unlike Chrome for the desktop, the mobile version of Chrome for Android currently does not work with any add-ons. However, alternatives like Firefox and Samsung Internet do.

One offering is Ghostery, which is a popular blocker and privacy-focused extension. On Android, it comes in the form of a full-blown browser that gives you visibility of the types of trackers that are on websites. Here’s how to block pop-ups using the Ghostery app.

1. Open the Ghostery app and tap the Settings cog.

2. Press “Block popups”.

3. Additionally, you can open Ghostery, choose Tracker Blocking Options and then select Block Everything for the most aggressive blocking option.

This will reduce the chance that you’ll see any pesky pop-ups that will ruin your mobile browsing experience.

Competing Android browsers offer a similar function for stopping pop-ups on Android, but Ghostery has the most aggressive reputation at blocking nuisances like pop-ups.

On the other hand, Google’s work with Chrome ensures it will likely be a fast option and integrate deeply with Android, so using that browser with blocking turned on is also a solid choice.

First person mode was added in GTA V with the release of the Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions of the game. Players can toggle between first person mode and third person mode in these versions of GTA V. Toggling between modes is simple on console and PC.

This will then have them return back to the normal third person view. Switching views on Xbox One is just as easy, players just have to hit the Views button on their Xbox One controller.

Players can set different views for different moments in GTA V by going to Options and then settings in the pause menu. Learn how to limit the personalization of ads delivered by Apple on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac, and how to turn off location-based ads delivered by Apple on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac.

Apple-delivered advertising helps people discover apps, products, and services while respecting user privacy. Many iPad users wonder how they can stop their iPad screen from sleeping automatically. If you want to stop the iPad from sleeping and turning the display off on it’s own, you can easily do so with a settings adjustment.

For the unfamiliar; the iPad will put itself to sleep and turn the screen off when it’s not in use after a short amount of time, this mechanism is the default because it helps to preserve battery life and can improve device security since by sleeping itself it will lock with the device passcode as well. That’s all well and good, but some users may find the automatic sleep behavior on iPad to be overly aggressive, and if you use the iPad to read something while participating in another activity, like cooking, reading or referencing something on screen, of if you’re using the iPad as a display or kiosk type situation.

It’s important to differentiate between the automatic screen sleeping behavior, which occurs with inactivity, and the automatic display brightness adjustment, which occurs with changes in ambient lighting. You can disable or enable the auto-brightness setting in iOS if desired, note that it changed locations within Settings from iOS 11 onward.

How to Stop iPad Screen from Sleeping and Locking

In modern versions of iOS, you can stop the iPad from sleeping the display with inactivity, or delay how long it takes for iPad to sleep the screen, by doing the following:

Open the “Settings” app on iPad

Go to “Display & Brightness” then choose “Auto-Lock”

  • Choose one of the following options suited to your iPad display needs:
    • Never – to stop the iPad from sleeping itself completely, choose “Never” as the option, this will completely prevent the iPad from sleeping the screen on its own
    • 2 minutes
    • 5 minutes
    • 10 minutes
    • 15 minutes

To completely disable the iPad screen sleep behavior just choose “Never”, but note that by doing so you will need to lock the iPad display yourself by hitting the lock/power button on the device (or using the virtualized lock button via Accessibility). Just remember there are security and privacy ramifications with the Never option, because if the iPad does not sleep itself and automatically lock, then anyone can freely use the device at any time just by walking up to it in the woken and active state. It will be entirely up to you or the last person on the iPad to turn off the display and lock it down with the lock button.

A decent compromise for many users is the 10 or 15 minutes options, which allow ample time to stare at a screen without interacting with it, before the iPad display turns itself off. The 15 minute option is popular with hobbyists reading manuals and guides, musicians reading notes or tabs, and chefs or any other kitchen enthusiast using an iPad as a recipe holder while cooking, and has the advantage of still turning itself off for security and privacy reasons after 15 minutes of inactivity.

By the way, if your iPad is an earlier model running a prior version of iOS the setting still exists but is located elsewhere, contained within the General settings section rather than the Display settings.

And for those who are curious, this setting also exists on iPhone and iPod touch too, though it seems to be used less on the pocketable devices compared to iPad.

First major PS5 console update lets you store PS5 games on USB extended storage, share gameplay across PS5 and PS4 consoles, and more.

How to remove ads on the playstation 4’s home screen

The first major system software update for the PS5 console is rolling out globally tomorrow, and it’s packed with new features and improvements. Our team is passionate about enhancing your experience on PlayStation in every possible way, so here’s a glimpse at what’s coming for PS5, PS4, and PlayStation App:

    PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

    • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
    • Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.
    • For tips on using USB extended storage on PS5, including storage device requirements, please visit: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-extended-storage/.

As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog.

New Social Features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles

    • Cross-generation Share Play. PS4 and PS5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
    • Request to Join Game Session. A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PS5 and PS4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.

Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PS5 Consoles

    • Improved Game Base. The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.
    • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume. You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
    • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
    • Customize Game Library. With the ability to hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
    • Screen Zoom. You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
    • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen. The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.

Image cropped to showcase new Trophy Stats screen

    New Features for PlayStation App

We’re also introducing a myriad of new features for PlayStation App to make it easier than ever to connect with your console experience remotely. Recently, we introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store. You can download PlayStation App for free from Google Play and the App Store.

We’re only scratching the surface of the many updates and improvements we’ve made across PS5, PS4, and PS App, so check them out and let us know what you think!

Setting 0.0.0.0 as your build number allows you to maintain a constantly overwriting build. If you use numbers and they change you will most likely have to delete your previous build to add your new updated build, if it does overwrite that way you can lose the ability to FTP through Windows File Explorer.

It is possible to have multiple RetroArch builds you’ve made on your console.

Always start from scratch with each build to avoid conflicting errors from previous Source(s).

Thanks to Horizon Zero Dawn being confirmed for PC as well as Death Stranding joining Steam relatively soon, there is now a lot of chatter about most PS4 exclusives eventually joining the master race. While this may or may not happen for the plethora of Sony exclusives talked about, PC loyalists can play PlayStation 4 games with and without the remote play function. This means you can enjoy the console’s assortment of amazing games as well as others even without owning Sony’s console.

As previously mentioned, there is a lot of talk about PS4 exclusives eventually transitioning to the master race and this is mostly because of Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding, as well as because the PS4 is set to be replaced by the PS5. In addition, there are also factors such as Media Molecule not shutting down the possibility of a Dreams desktop release.

While it’s possible that more of Sony’s exclusives will eventually move to PC, a lot of master race gamers want to know how they can play the system’s library of games right now without remote play and thus without Sony’s console.

You should know in advance that a PS Now subscription costs either £49.99 for 12-months, £22.99 for three months, or £8.99 for one month. And you surely don’t need us to tell you that the full year is the better and cheaper option.

    • Windows 7 (SP 1), 8.1 or 10
    • Core i3 2.0 GHz

    • 300 MB or more of available storage
    • 2 GB or more of RAM
    • Sound card; USB port

How to play PS4 games on Android and iPhone

You can play PS4 games on Android, iPhone, and PC via the remote play app which requires you own the following:

    • PS4 console connected to your home broadband network
    • DualShock 4 wireless controller
    • At least 5Mbps broadband internet with 12Mbps recommended via LAN cable
    • A compatible device that is also connected to your home broadband network

In regard to what counts as a compatible device, Sony notes that any Android device running Android 5.0 or higher can run PS4 remote play using on-screen controls. They specifically note that only devices with 10.0 or higher can connect to a DualShock 4 Wirelsss controller.

As for iPhone and iPad, any Apple device running iOS 12.1 is compatible with the Remote Play app, meanwhile iOS 13 is required to connect to a controller.

Else, choose a provider through which you subscribed to HBO Max (like Hulu, YouTube TV, etc.) and log in through that service. You can create a new HBO Max account through a provider to avoid using provider credentials every time or to easily share only the HBO Max credentials with friends and family, thus avoiding sharing your provider login info.
