Hyperlinks are really useful in PowerPoint – you can link to web resources, email addresses, files, slides and custom shows. If you are are using text as your link you may not want it to appear so – for example you may have a link to a custom show that relates to specific questions the audience may or may not ask but you don’t want to advertise that link on the slide.

The giveaways that text is a link are both the colour of the text and the underline. How do you remove these formatting features from a hyperlink? If at any point you are not clear what to do just watch the video below.

Hiding the Underline on a Hyperlink

One way to hide the underline is to make the underline colour the same as the background colour of your slide. Open the Font dialog box and change the Underline Style to Single Line and the Underline Colour to the colour of your slide background.

Hiding the Underline with Graphic or Shaded Slide Backgrounds

The above method above works fine if you have a simple, solid colour slide background. If you don’t you will need to try something else. Your best option is to remove the hyperlink from the text and then place an invisible rectangle on top of it. You can then apply the hyperlink to this shape. To your audience it will look like you have clicked on the text to activate the hyperlink but in fact you will have clicked on the invisible shape.

Changing the Colour of the Hyperlink Text

Hyperlink text is normally a different colour to the rest of the text on your slide but you can change this setting. On the DESIGN tab you should find an option for customising colours: in PowerPoint 2013 the option is in the Variants group. There are two hyperlink colours you can customise: Hyperlink and Followed Hyperlink. You will need to change both of these to the same colour as the regular text in your presentation.

You can remove a hyperlink from a single address, remove many links at once, turn automatic hyperlinks off, and turn off the requirement to press Ctrl to follow a hyperlink.

Remove a hyperlink

To remove a hyperlink but keep the text, right-click the hyperlink and click Remove Hyperlink.

How to remove underlined hyperlinks in powerpoint

To remove the hyperlink completely, select it and then press Delete.

If the hyperlink was created using the HYPERLINK function, you can remove the hyperlink by using the following steps:

Select the cell containing the hyperlink.

Press CTRL+C to copy the hyperlink.

Right Click and paste using the Values paste option.

Remove all hyperlinks at the same time

If you’re using Word or Outlook, or Excel 2010 or later, you can remove all hyperlinks in a file by using a keyboard shortcut.

In Word and Outlook:

Press Ctrl+A to select all text.

In Excel 2010 and later:

Select all cells that contain hyperlinks, or press Ctrl+A to select all cells.

Right-click, and then click Remove Hyperlinks.

Turn off automatic hyperlinks

When it’s not convenient to have Office automatically create hyperlinks in your document as you type, you can turn them off.

In Office 2010 and later:

Click File > Options > Proofing.

(In Outlook, click File > Options > Mail > Editor Options > Proofing.)

Click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Options > Proofing.

(In Outlook, open a new message, click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Editor Options > Proofing.)

Click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

Clear the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box.

Turn off Ctrl+Click to follow a link

By default, Word and Outlook require you to press Ctrl when you click to follow a hyperlink. This extra step keeps you from accidentally going to a linked destination while you’re editing a document.

If you want to click links without having to press Ctrl, try this:

In Word 2010 and later, click File > Options > Advanced.

In Word 2007, click the Microsoft Office button > Word Options > Advanced.

In Outlook 2010 and later, click File > Options > Mail > Editor Options > Advanced.

In Outlook 2007, open a new message and click the Microsoft Office button > Editor Options > Advanced.

Under Editing Options, clear the Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink check box.
