It’s not at all difficult to remove the password to your Windows account. Once you delete your password, you no longer have to log on to Windows when your computer starts.

Anyone in your home or office will have full access to everything on your computer after you remove your password, so doing so isn’t a very security conscious thing to do.

However, if you have no concerns about others physically accessing whatever they want on your computer, removing your password shouldn’t be an issue for you and will certainly speed up your computer start time.

If you want to delete your password because you’ve forgotten it and can no longer access Windows, then you won’t be able to use the method below. The standard “remove your password” process requires that you have access to your Windows account. If you don’t know your password, see the tip at the bottom of this page.

If you don’t want to completely delete your password, you can instead configure Windows to automatically log in. This way your account still has a password but you’re never asked for it when Windows starts.

How to Remove Your Windows Password

You can delete your Windows account password from Control Panel but the specific way you go about doing it is a little different depending on which operating system you have. See What Version of Windows Do I Have? if you’re not sure which of these several versions of Windows is installed on your computer.

Deleting a Windows 10 or Windows 8 Password

Open Control Panel. On touch interfaces, the easiest way is via its link on the Start menu (or Apps screen in Windows 8), but the Power User Menu is probably faster if you have a keyboard or mouse.

How to remove your windows password

On Windows 10, select User Accounts (it’s called User Accounts and Family Safety in Windows 8).

If the View by setting is on Large icons or Small icons, then you won’t see this link. Pick User Accounts instead and skip to Step 4.

Select User Accounts.

Choose Make changes to my account in PC settings.

Select Sign-in options from the left.

How to remove your windows password

Select Change in the Password section.

How to remove your windows password

Type your current password in the text box on the next screen, and then select Next.

How to remove your windows password

Choose Next once more on the next page but don’t fill out any information. Entering a blank password will replace the old password with a blank one.

How to remove your windows password

You can close out of the open window with the Finish button, and exit the Settings window.

Deleting a Windows 7, Vista, or XP Password

Go to Start > Control Panel.

In Windows 7, choose User Accounts and Family Safety (it’s called User Accounts in Vista and XP).

If you’re viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel in Windows 7, or if you’re on Vista or XP and have Classic View enabled, simply open User Accounts and proceed to Step 4.

Open User Accounts.

In the Make changes to your user account area of the User Accounts window, select Remove your password. In Windows XP, the window is titled User Accounts, and there’s an extra step: In the or pick an account to change area, select your Windows XP username and choose Remove my password.

In the text box on the next screen, enter your current Windows password.

Select Remove Password to confirm that you’d like to remove your Windows password.

You can now close any open windows related to user accounts.

See How to Find Lost Windows Passwords for several different ways to get back into Windows if you don’t know your password. Probably the most popular option is to use a Windows password recovery program, a piece of software used to crack or reset the password. Depending on which password recovery method you use, you can then change your password or create a new password after you’re done.

You can remove your account password on Windows 10, whether you’re using a Microsoft account or local account, and in this guide, you’ll learn how to perform this task.

Although using Windows 10 with a password (or another form of authentication) is the most secure way to keep your device and files safe and secure, sometimes, depending on the situation, a password may just add extra steps to the login process.

If you have a computer without important files, and you’re not concern about security, Windows 10 includes multiple ways to remove the account password.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to sign in automatically, or remove the logon password, from Windows 10 whether you use a local account or Microsoft account.

Disable password login on Windows 10

If you use a Microsoft account, you can’t remove the password entirely, because your credentials are linked to your online account, but you can configure your device to sign in automatically to mimic an account without a password.

To bypass the password logon on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Start on Windows 10.

Search for netplwiz and click the top result to open the app.

Under the “Users for this computer” section, select the user account that you want to remove the password.

Clear the User must enter a user name and password to use this computer option.

Click the OK button again.

Once you complete the steps, the device will continue to have a password to stay secure from remote access, but it’ll login automatically every time you restart the system.

Alternatively, if you use a Microsoft account, you can remove the password entirely, but you need to switch to a local account.

Remove password for Microsoft account

To switch to a local account and remove password, use these steps:

Open Settings.

Click on Accounts.

Click on Your info.

Click the Sign in with a local account instead option.

Click the Next button.

Confirm your current password.

Click the Next button.

Create a username for the account.

Leave the “Password” and “Reenter password” fields blank to remove the password entirely.

Click the Next button.

Click the Sign out and finish button.

After you complete the steps, your device will no longer be connected with a Microsoft account, and it’ll sign in automatically every time you start the system.

Remove password for local account

To remove Windows 10 password, use these steps:

Open Settings.

Click on Accounts.

Click on Sign-in options.

Under the “Password” section, click the Change button.

Confirm your current account password.

Click the Next button.

Leave the “Password” and “Reenter password” fields blank to remove the password entirely.

Click the Next button.

Click the Finish button.

Once you complete the steps, a password will no longer be required to access the Windows 10 desktop. Of course, this is unsafe, but there are still situations where a device may not need a password and risks a minimal when there are not strangers around.

If you want to remove a password just because it’s an inconvenience, it’s best to switch to a faster and more secure method of authentication, such as biometric authentication using PIN password or fingerprint reader, which only requires a simple finger swipe.

How to remove your windows password

Not everyone likes having to enter a password every time they need to sign in to their computer. Windows lets you get rid of the password without too much hassle. Here’s how.

Why You Probably Shouldn’t Do This

There are several caveats you should be aware of before you even consider using the techniques we cover in this article.

  • You must be using a local account for the password removal trick to work. You can’t remove your password if you’re using a Microsoft account. If you’re using a Microsoft account and still want to do this, you’ll need to revert your account to a local one.
  • Removing the password from your computer can be a security risk. Anyone can access it by simply walking up to it. However, people still need to have physical access to do this. Having no password on a local account doesn’t make you any more vulnerable to remote intrusion.
  • If you make an administrator account have no password, malicious applications running on your PC could theoretically gain elevated access to Windows.
  • If you have only one account on your Windows PC, it’s a better idea to set Windows up to sign you in automatically instead of removing your password, but even that has its problems. We’ll show you how to do it later in this article and note the specific security risks it entails, as well.

Yeah, that’s a lot of important caveats. The truth is, we generally recommend against using these techniques, even though, in certain circumstances, they might make sense. In the end, we’re writing about them because we’ve seen the advice passed around on other sites without noting the important risks it involves.

How to Remove the Windows Password for a Local User Account

Open the Settings app by clicking the Start menu and then the Settings cog.

How to remove your windows password

Next, click on “Accounts.”

How to remove your windows password

From the list of settings on the left side, select “Sign-in Options” and then under the “Password” section on the right, click the “Change” button.

How to remove your windows password

To change your password, you must first confirm your current one, for security reasons. Once you have done that, click “Next.”

How to remove your windows password

For the next section, because we don’t want to use a password to sign in, leave all the fields blank and click “Next.” By not entering a password and leaving it blank, Windows replaces your current one with a blank one.

How to remove your windows password

Finally, click “Finish.”

Alternatively, if you feel more comfortable in the command line, fire up an elevated Command Prompt and enter the following command, replacing username with the name of the user account (be sure to include the quotes in the command):

How to remove your windows password

The next time you go to log in, all you have to do is click “Sign in” for the account you just changed.

How to Automatically Sign Into Windows

If you have only one user account on your PC, automatically signing in is the better option.

Note that there is a security risk with this method, too. First up, the same thing applies that we mentioned before: Anyone can walk up to your PC and sign themselves in. What’s more, when you enable it Windows stores your account password on your PC where anyone with admin access can find it. Again, this isn’t too big a deal if your PC is in a secure location accessible only by people you trust (like maybe in your home), but it’s not a good idea on a laptop you carry around with you, and it’s certainly not a good idea if you use a Microsoft account rather than a local one. We’ve got a full article detailing the risks with setting automatic login that you might want to read before enabling it.

If you do want to have Windows automatically sign you in, it’s easy to set up.

Run the command netplwiz from the Start Menu or Command Prompt. In the User Accounts window that opens, untick the “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” checkbox and then click “OK.”

How to remove your windows password

One last option has to be turned off to make sure you never have to use a password to sign in again. In the Settings app, head on over to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, and under “Require Sign-in” select “Never” from the drop-down list.

How to remove your windows password

Now, anytime you’ve been away from the computer and wake it back up, you won’t need to input any password to sign in to your account.

Hi Anthony. I’m Greg, an installation specialist, 9 year Windows MVP and Independent Advisor, here to help you.

Passwords are stored in the browser Settings, in Edge it’s in the Advanced Settings.

Windows also has a Credentials Manager that stores all passwords on the PC. Type Credential in Start Search, open it, to view a password it will prompt for your Windows password or PIN to know it’s you.

You can sign into Chrome or Firefox and the passwords as well as Bookmarks, History and Auto-completes will be saved to their server so it’s available on any of your devices. This works perfectly (except in Edge).

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

This is better to disable it rather then entirely removing it? right?

Protect PC from Threats with Anti-Malware

Check your PC for malware your antivirus may miss and get threats safely removed with Auslogics Anti-Malware

For some people, it is a hassle to type their password whenever they sign into their PC. If you want to be able to boot your system without entering anything, then you should learn how to remove the Windows password for a local user account. That said, there are still some precautions you should take when performing this action. In this post, we will discuss them so that you will be able to make the best decision for your computer.

Is it Safe to Remove the Windows 10 Password?

Before you consider following the instructions we will provide in this article, you should be aware of the various caveats involved. For one, the password removal trick will only work if you are using a local account. If you are using a Microsoft account, you won’t be able to get rid of your password. So, you must switch from your Microsoft account to a local account before proceeding.

You should also know that removing the password from your PC is a security risk. Anyone can walk to your computer and access your files and data. On the other hand, you won’t have to worry about remote intrusions because even without a password on your local account, your computer won’t be vulnerable to such attacks. However, just to be sure, it is best that you install Auslogics Anti-Malware.

Keep in mind that if an administrator account does not have a password, malicious programs running on the computer can gain elevated access to the operating system. With Auslogics Anti-Malware installed on your PC, you can ensure that suspicious applications will be detected immediately. After all, this tool can spot threats and attacks, no matter how discreetly they operate in the background.

If there is only a single account on your Windows computer, it is best that you set your OS to sign you in automatically. This is a better option than removing your password entirely. However, you should understand that this method has specific security issues as well. We are sharing the disadvantages of removing your password so that you know the possible risks you are about to face. On the other hand, if you still want to get rid of your password, you are free to follow the instructions we’ll provide.

How to Remove my Windows Password

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows Key+I. Doing so will open the Settings app.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Go to the left-pane menu, then click Sign-in Options.
  4. Now, move to the right pane and go to the Password section.
  5. Click the Change button.
  6. Confirm your current password, then click Next.
  7. Once you get to the next page, keep the password boxes blank, then click Next. By leaving them empty, your operating system will replace your current password with a blank one.
  8. Click Finish.

If you prefer modifying Windows settings via Command Prompt, you can follow the instructions below:

  1. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, then type “Command Prompt” (no quotes).
  2. Right-click Command Prompt, then select Run as Administrator from the options.
  3. Now, paste the command line below and replace ‘username’ with the name of your user account:

net user “username” “”

The next time you boot your computer, all you need to do is click the Sign In button and you can access your desktop without typing a password.

Setting Windows to Sign You in Automatically

If you have one user account on your computer, signing in automatically is a better option than removing your password. However, you must know that this method has a security risk as well. For instance, anyone can walk up to your computer and access the desktop. Keep in mind that when you enable this feature, anyone with admin access can acquire your account passwords. After all, your operating system will store your passwords locally.

Of course, this won’t be a problem if you keep your PC in a secure location. On the other hand, if you carry your laptop around or if you are using a Microsoft account, signing in automatically is not the ideal option for you. If you still want to proceed, simply follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, then type “netplwiz” (no quotes). Press Enter to open the User Accounts window.
  2. Deselect the ‘Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer’ option.
  3. Click OK to save the changes you made.
  4. Now, open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key+I on your keyboard.
  5. Follow this path:

Accounts ->Sign-in options

  1. Go to the Require Sign-in section, then choose Never from the drop-down list.
