There is a downside to creating good, strong passwords. What if you forget yours? Recovering a lost password in Windows Vista can be a nightmare if you don’t take the right precautions. But there are some things you can try.

This might sound simplistic, but before you do anything rash, check to see if your Caps Lock key is on. You’d be amazed how many people come crying to technicians to find a way into their computer only to have the technician turn off the Caps Lock and tell them to try again. Save yourself some embarrassment and check first.

Recover using your password reset disk

If you have your password reset disk handy, follow these steps to reset the password to one you can remember.

On the Vista welcome screen, after you’ve failed to enter the correct password, click the link that says Reset Password.

    The Password Reset Wizard appears.

Attach any drive containing the latest version of userkey.psw before you click Next.

The wizard asks you to choose the “password key disk.”

Choose the removable drive that contains userkey.psw . Click Next.

How to Reset a Windows XP or Vista Password

The wizard asks you to provide a new password.

Give the wizard a new password and hint for this account. Click Next.

The wizard reaches into Vista and changes the password for this particular user. It doesn’t matter what the old password was; this new password now takes effect.

Click the Finish button and then log on with the new password you specified.

Now everything is back to normal. Just be sure to use the new password you created.

If you don’t have a password reset disk

So what do you do if you forget your password, you don’t have a network administrator to bail you out, and you didn’t create a password reset disk?

It depends on whether your system uses the NTFS file system and its Encrypted File System.

If you do have this kind of file system and forget your password and don’t have a password reset disk, don’t attempt anything listed here. If you succeed in changing the password, you clobber all those encrypted files. Some companies claim to have software that opens those encrypted files, but it’s far from a sure thing. Spend some time on the Internet and keep trying.

If you don’t use the Encrypted File System, try to log on with a different Administrator account, bring up your account in User Accounts and Family Safety, and change your password. This approach really is as simple as it sounds.

Unfortunately, if you’re using BitLocker and you forget or lose your key, you’re probably beyond help.

Good luck. If none of these options work for you, you might be stuck with doing a full System Recovery, which will make your computer functional again, but will destroy all your files and settings.

When you change your account’s password, you will lose any other passwords that Internet Explorer has stored for you, as well as some other stored passwords — so you may have to provide your password again the next time you check out of Amazon, for example, and you have to come up with your wireless network password, if you have one. But these inconveniences are usually a small price to pay.

You don’t, at least not without the installation media.

Also, do note that even if you did the installation would be as the system was when new, without updates or any service packs issued after the media was produced. (Updates from MS for XP ended quite some time ago).

What problem are you having that brings you to want to try a “Factory Reset” of XP?

I want to factory reset a Windows XP computer, but I don’t have any installation media to do the repair installation. How do I reset Windows XP without a CD?

If it is an Acer you press the left Alt + F10 Key.

If it a Dell you press Ctrl + F11.

That is how you do it if the manufacturer never included a XP CD when you purchased the computer when new.

That’s called factory resetting which is what you asked about.

    Hi Bill, that’s interesting.

My last experience with attempting to use the XP supplied Windows update site (link) resulted in the site is no longer active and then being redirected.

Do you have, is there, an updated link (or list of links) to use to be able to update Windows XP from it’s initial release state up to and though to the final state of it being still supported? (Amazingly, but really not so amazingly, that could indeed prove to be a popular not only list but topic of discussion/conversation as well, even still today! (XP did Rock), NT continues.

Use Windows PE via Hiren’s Boot CD/USB to Reset a Windows 10 Password

Do you need to reset a Windows 10 password? Microsoft doesn’t make it easy to reset Windows 10 passwords when they are lost or forgotten. That is important to keep unwanted users off your computer. Below I give you the steps that show how to perform a Hirens Boot CD password reset on Windows 10. You can use either a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. I’ll show you where to get the files and download them for free, and show you which ones you need for your case. This method works on Windows 10 and 8. If you need to do it on an older version of windows, there is a link below for that too.

We have an older article that will help you if you are looking to reset a password on Windows 7 , Windows XP, Windows Vista, and even Windows 8.

As I’ve said before, Hiren’s BootCD is an excellent utility that you can create on CD, DVD or USB. Read on to find out how to enable this password reset method.

Step 1: Choose CD or USB and download software

The current version (at time of writing) is Hiren’s BootCD PE x64

    CD method

First of all, you’ll need the Hiren’s boot CD software. If you want to set up a CD iso download it here (scroll down to the download button at the bottom).

When the zip file has downloaded, double-click the file to extract it. You will then need to burn the ISO file to a writable CD. For this you can use programs like ‘ Free ISO Burner ’ (or ImgBurn and many more – perhaps you already have suitable software).

USB Method (Hiren’s boot USB Windows 10 password reset)

If creating ISO versions are annoying to you, or your laptop doesn’t have a CD player, then you will need to put it on a USB. It is possible and it’s much better these days as every machine will have a USB port. It’s probably easier too.

To create a USB boot up version you will need to download the USB Alternative as an executable file (opens in a new tab – this is handy as it has the details on setting up your USB). This will ensure you copy the content and manage the USB drive properly.

So, just to be clear: you need Hiren’s BootCD PE – ISO2USB if you want to use boot from a USB, and Hiren’s BootCD PE x64 if you are going to create a boot CD/DVD.

Warning: Be certain you use a new or blank USB as you will lose everything on one that has data on it. The process includes a reformat and the USB will lose any partitions.

Note: you will need to set up either the bootable CD or USB on another computer. Yes I know this is probably obvious, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to point it out.

Step 2: Boot from the CD or USB

With the CD version, put it into the computer that needs its password reset and boot from it. You will likely have to change the computer’s boot order in the BIOS in order to boot from the CD.

Note: When using the USB or flash drive version, you will only see USB options in the list of devices.

Step 3: Select Windows PE from the menu

Windows PE is for deployment and recovery, in other words it is the mini XP for Windows 10.

When you boot from the CD, you will see a Hiren’s boot menu, a little like the one below. Move down to “Offline NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 Password Changer” (using the arrow key) and press enter.

Note, if you have an older version of Windows, you can use Mini Windows XP as first highlighted.

As I state above, this is the deployment and recovery version for Windows 10.

To perform the password reset (or clear) in Windows 10 select ‘Offline… Password Changer’ in Hiren’s bootCD menu. (Yes your version will be newer than mine shown.)

Note: As is written on the screen, Don’t Panic! Several lines of text will roll up the screen, which may be a little disconcerting the first time you see it.

Step 4: If necessary Select the partition

If more than one partition is identified, it will prompt you to select the one (disk) where Windows 10 is installed.

Note: Windows 10 installation normally takes up around 30 GB (ie. 30k MB) – that might help you identify its partition.

If prompted, type the number corresponding to the Windows partition on the screen.

Step 5: Acknowledge or Select Path

I expect most PCs will have the default path as Windows/System32/config.

For most PCs you can just hit .

Step 6: Select the default Hirens boot cd PE Windows 10 password reset

You can just press again, because it is the ‘password reset’ option we need.

Step 7: Select to Reset Administrator or another user password

You will have a few options at this point to select the user account that needs its password reset.

The user accounts will now be displayed and usually include Administrator and Guest in addition to the users normal set name, which you (or they) should easily recognise.

Reset Administrator password Windows 10 with Hiren boot cd:

    Type ‘Administrator’ and press .

Reset (User account) password on Windows 10 with Hiren boot cd:

In your case it’s you or your client’s username.

Type the username from the list and press .

Step 8: Select the Option to Clear Password

Type ‘1’ and press for the default option ‘Clear (blank) user password’, as this is the actual step that will reset a password in Windows 10 by Hirens boot CD *.

You should get feedback that it is successful, ‘Password cleared’.

Note: * You will need to save the changes as you exit.

Press ‘q’ and hit to commence quitting the main menu.

Note: Yes you can write a new password rather than clear it.

    Step 9: Save Changes

You will be prompted to save changes. Hit the ‘y’ key for yes (and press ), and your password reset will be saved (ie. the password is saved as clear).

    Step 10: Reboot

You are now ready to reboot the machine. Remove the CD or USB, and then restart. You or the user can now log into the computer without a password. Awesome! You’ve done a Hirens boot CD password reset in Windows 10!

The best way to protect yourself and your password is to create a password reset disk in Windows Vista. A password reset disk is a defensive maneuver. It guards you against the slings and arrows of others who use your PC.

Windows Vista comes with a pretty sophisticated security system, which is great when you want to keep people out of your computer but not so great if you can’t remember your own password and it keeps you out as well.

Why is it so important to create a password reset disk for your account? Because any administrator who can get on your PC can switch your password — and you can do nothing about it!

Choose Start→Control Panel, click the User Accounts and Family Safety icon, and then click the User Accounts icon.

How to Reset a Windows XP or Vista Password

Sooner or later, you end up at the Make Changes to Your User Account dialog box.

In the Tasks pane on the left, click the Create a Password Reset Disk link.

Vista brings up the Forgotten Password Wizard, which steps you through creating a password reset disk.

Don’t worry. The name’s a bit discombobulating. This is the wizard you want to run when you remember your password so that you can retrieve all your data if you forget your password.

Insert your USB key drive and then click Next.

How to Reset a Windows XP or Vista Password

The wizard asks where you want to “create a password key disk.”

Once upon a time, every PC had a floppy drive, and Microsoft assumed that your password reset disk would naturally be a floppy disk. Times change. Nowadays your only real choice is a USB key drive or a camera. Yes, a camera — or almost any other kind of drive connected to a USB port, including a SmartCard reader.

Choose the drive you want to hold the password reset file and then click Next.

The wizard asks for the current password, which you must supply to create the disk.

Vista isn’t actually creating a password disk but rather putting a small file called userkey.psw on the drive.

Type the password for the account and then click Next.

You see a green progress bar that stops at 100 percent complete.

    Click Next. Then click Finish.

The wizard warns you that this is the last, best, and only valid password reset disk for this account. You can now use your password reset disk.

First of all, let me tell you that, we are not discussing anything about the Recovery Disk, or such Windows provided options. This is a method found by me, when my friend’s PC got locked and there were no way to open it other than HACKING.

If you don’t have access to any other accounts in the same PC -> then do these steps… else go to end of the post

    • You will be getting a Login screen asking you the Password of the user. On this screen the utilities like Task Manager, CMD Prompt etc. will not work. In any case if you can open these two: then it’s easy… just skip to next heading
    • To do this Hack, we only need Command Prompt application and a small line of code. So, to make CMD.exe accessible in the Login Screen, do the following steps:

    >>> Please have any of these two :: Windows Installation disk / Linux based OS disk (like Ubuntu).

    • If you have a Windows Installation media , then insert it and Boot from that media
    • Now, select Repair Your Computer (option varies as 7, Vista, XP – find the similar option) – to get access to a Command prompt. If done type the following codes

    copy c:windowssystem32utilman.exe c:utilman.exe

    copy c:windowssystem32cmd.exe c:windowssystem32utilman.exe

    >>> or (if you have Windows XP)

    copy c:windowssystem32sethc.exe c:sethc.exe

    copy c:windowssystem32cmd.exe c:windowssystem32sethc.exe

    • This will make the cmd.exe available in the login screen.
    • If you have Linux based OS media (like ubuntu) , then insert it and run the OS Live from the disk and get into the desktop of the OS.
    • Open up the Local Disk, where you OS lies and goto WindowsSystem32
    • Now take a backup of these two files (utilman.exe & sethc.exe)
    • Replace the original files by cmd.exe by copying and renaming it into these two names.
    • That’s it. The cmd.exe is now available at your Login Screen

When you have access to the cmd.exe at Login Screen

    • Open cmd.exe by pressing shift key 5 times – if you used sethc.exe
    • or By clicking the Ease of access button on the screen’s bottom left position – if you used utilman.exe
    • Now in the cmd type the following code…

replace username with your username, newpassword with your new password

    • That’s it… Login with your New Password .

If you have access to any other account in the same PC, you can do this by opening cmd from that account…
