It is to troubleshoot problems with Microsoft Edge, and for a myriad of different reasons, that Windows 10 users need to know how they can reinstall Microsoft Edge. Edge isn’t a third-party program you can uninstall from the Control Panel and then download an installer for from the internet, and not is it a Windows Store app that you can uninstall and then reinstall from the Windows Store.

Microsoft Edge is an application that is hardwired and built-in to the Windows 10 Operating System. That being the case, uninstalling and then reinstalling Microsoft Edge works a bit differently and the usual rules don’t really apply. Web browsers usually download and store web pages on your computer’s hard drive as a way of improving the speed of websites. This process is referred to as caching. Even though it is a helpful function, it can be such a pain for developers.

When in development mode, the changes you have made on the CSS or JavaScript may not be visible in the browser. This is because the browser tends to load the cached pages. To see the changes, you have made, you will have to do a hard refresh.

So before we delve into the process of doing a hard refresh, let’s first answer the question –

what is hard refresh in chrome, and also look at why you may need it.

Do I need hard refresh in my browser?

A hard refresh refers to the process of clearing the browser cache on a specific page in order to make it load the most recent version instead of the cached version of the page. A hard refresh usually does the trick, but in some instances, it might require the deletion of all browser cache.

Browser cache also poses a risk to the user. If someone gains access to your computer, all they need to do in order to see some of your personal data is open your cache folder. This is another reason why you may want to delete your cache.

Also, as your browser stores more data, the browser gets heavier over time. Deleting the cache may, therefore, free up some space and ironically help you to have a faster browsing experience.

The following are the steps to follow when doing a hard refresh on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

How can I hard-refresh my browser in Chrome, Mozilla, and Edge?

In Chrome

Windows and Linux operating systems,

  1. Hold down the CTRL key and then click on the reload button.
  2. Alternatively, hold down the CTRL key and then press the F5 key.

The other method of doing a hard refresh is opening the Chrome Dev Tools (press F 12) and then right clicking on the refresh button. From the resultant drop-down list, select “hard reload.”

  1. Hold down the Shift key and then click on the reload button.
  2. Alternatively, hold down the Cmd key and then press the R key.

Windows or Linux operating systems,

  1. Hold down the Ctrl Key and then press F5.
  2. Alternatively, hold down the Shift key and Ctrl key, and then press the R key.
  1. Holding down the Shift key, click the reload button
  2. Or, hold down the Cmd and Shift keys and then press the R key.

Doing a hard refresh on Edge/Internet Explorer uses the same commands across the different operating systems.

  1. Hold down the Ctrl key and then press your F5 key.
  2. Or, hold down the Ctrl key and then click the Refresh button.

Doing a hard refresh almost always works. However, there are some special circumstances where you may perform the steps suggested above and still notice no change after reloading your edited webpage. If this happens, you might have to either try loading the page in a different browser or take the longer route of deleting all of your browser cache.

Nevertheless, if Edge shows graphics glitches or if for some reason you wish to reset, repair or reinstall Microsoft Edge Legacy browser to default settings in Windows 10, you may do the following.

  • This post will show you how to reset the new Microsoft Edge Chromium browser.
  • If you wish to reinstall Edge (Chromium) browser, then you will have to uninstall the Edge browser via Control Panel, and then download Edge and fresh-install it, like any other program.

Repair or Reset Edge Legacy browser

Windows 10 allows you to reset or repair the Edge browser with a click via Settings. To do so, open the WinX Menu and click on Settings. Next, under the Apps and features section, search for Microsoft Edge.

Now click on the Advanced options link to open the following window.

Now you may first select the Repair option if Edge is not working properly. When you repair Edge, your data will remain safe.

If this does not make any difference, you may select the Reset button. Windows will reset your Edge browser settings, keeping your Favorites intact – but you may lose other Edge data.

BONUS: If your Edge is crashing or freezing, switch to a Local Account from Microsoft Account, or vice versa and see if this resolves the issue. If you create a new User Account, your Edge will be available to you in a fresh state, for that User Account.

Reinstall Legacy Edge HTML browser

You are all familiar with the procedure for manually uninstalling or reinstalling the Store apps. But the remove-appxpackage command will not work for Microsoft Edge, as it is a part of the Windows operating system.

Follow this procedure to do it.

Open the C:\Users \%username%\AppData \Local\Packages folder location in File Explorer.

Here you will see the package Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Delete it. If you cannot, right-click on it and select Properties. Here under General tab > Attributes, uncheck the Read only check-box. If need be, Take ownership of the file and then delete it.

If you want to make things easy, use our Ultimate Windows Tweaker and add Take ownership, to your right-click context menu. Then right-click on the package and select Take ownership from the context menu.

Once you have deleted the Edge package, open an elevated PowerShell prompt, type the following and hit Enter:

This will re-install Edge browser. Once done, you will receive a Operation completed message.

Restart your Windows 10 computer and see if this has worked for you.

In Windows 10, Microsoft is introducing many new features to make users more productive, such as a new Start menu, Cortana, new universal apps, Settings, which is the central place to configure the operating system, ultimately designed to replace Control Panel, and much more. The software giant is also introducing Microsoft Edge, the new default web browser built for the future web and to replace Internet Explorer (which it’s still present for compatibility purposes).

Microsoft Edge is a completely new web browser with a minimal design that focus on web content, and like Chrome and Firefox, the software maker plans to match and surpass the features available from its competitors with extensions, web notes, tab preview, Cortana, and more.

While the web browser works quite alright without major problems, it’s still in the early days. Some users may run into some issues, such as sudden crashes, slow performance, or simply it won’t launch.

If you were running Chrome or Firefox, and you’re having similar issues, you should try to uninstall and reinstall the web browser to try to resolve the problem.
