The Amazon Firestick is the most popular streaming device on the market today because of its low price point and the ability to “jailbreak” it.

After resetting your Firestick/Fire TV I highly recommend going through our Jailbreak Firestick Guide to get the most of this powerful streaming device.

Unfortunately, the small 8 GB internal storage fills up rather quickly. This may make your Firestick or Fire TV slow and sometimes unresponsive.

Although you can Expand Firestick Storage, oftentimes resetting your Firestick is the better choice and will allow you to start fresh.

Sometimes a reset is necessary, as a simple Firestick Restart does not always fix the underlying issues.

When you reset your Firestick to factory default settings, it will return to the same state it was in when you first purchased it.

The reset process is very simple and only takes a couple of minutes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please keep in mind that when you do this, you will be erasing everything on the system. After your system reboots, you will need to reinstall your applications.

Ever since its release, Amazon’s Fire TV stick has been a real contender in the world of media streaming.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

Overall, the Fire TV player is a stable device. It runs on Amazon’s robust Fire OS that was designed specifically for their mobile devices and peripherals. Like all other devices, though, it sometimes experiences performance issues.

A Fire TV player overloaded with apps can be sluggish and unresponsive. If so, a factory reset may be in order. Unfortunately, if you don’t have access to the device’s PIN that complicates things. In this article, you’ll learn how to factory reset your Fire TV stick without a PIN.

Factory Reset Without PIN

If you’ve forgotten or lost your PIN, don’t despair. There are two ways to reset the Fire TV. One is far more reliable than the other, so we’ll start with that method first. It involves getting a new PIN from the amazon website.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

Change Your PIN

First, go to and log in when prompted to do so. You can also log in to your Amazon account and access the Prime Video page. Then, click on “Settings” and find the “Parental Controls” tab.

In the Parental Controls tab, the very first item will be your PIN. The PIN is hidden for safety, but immediately to the right of it you’ll see a button that says “Change.” Click the Change button and input your new PIN and click Save.

At the bottom of the parental controls tab, you’ll find a list of your associated devices. Make sure the Fire TV is selected as one of the devices you’re applying the controls to. Otherwise, the PIN won’t be changed for that device.

Wait a few minutes for the PIN to distribute and then reset your Fire TV. The resetting process falls outside the scope of this article, but it can be done easily through “My Fire TV” in the device’s Settings menu.

Factory Reset with the Fire TV Remote

The second method is less reliable and only works on some versions of the Fire TV. If you have the remote paired with the Fire TV, navigate to the factory reset screen and begin the factory reset process.

When it requests a PIN, hold down both the right navigation and return buttons. After about ten seconds, the PIN request screen should be bypassed.

Again, there’s no guarantee that this will work, as it isn’t clear which versions of the firmware and device it works with. However, it shouldn’t take longer than a few seconds to try.

Alternatives to Resetting

If your Fire TV is not responding or frequently freezes, a factory reset is probably your best bet. However, if your issues are more about slow performance and long load time, it may be easier to perform some basic housekeeping instead.

Try a Basic Restart

Before you factory reset, try to restart your Fire TV. The device is usually running even when you’re not directly using it. If it’s been running too long, certain processes can get in each other’s way. Restarting it will clear the process queue and could help things run smoother.

  1. Press and hold the “Home” button on your remote.
  2. Selects “Settings” from the menu and then “Device”
  3. From the device menu, select restart

The process should only take a minute.

Turn Off Data Monitoring

It may sound sinister, but data monitoring has nothing to do with collecting your data. It’s a tool that makes sure you don’t exceed bandwidth and usage limits on your internet service. If that’s not a concern for you, the resources could be better-allocated elsewhere.

In the settings menu, which you accessed previously, you’ll find an item named “Data Monitoring.” Select it and toggle the monitoring off. Then, press the Home button again to go back to browsing.

Delete Unused Apps

The Fire TV comes with a lot of bloatware incorporated when you purchase it. This, along with all the other apps you download over time, can gum up the works, so to speak.

Go through your downloaded apps and uninstall any that you don’t use frequently. If you haven’t used an app in the last month, chances are you don’t really need it or you can afford to reinstall it later.

To uninstall apps, access the settings menu and select “Manage Applications.” From there, you can select the apps you want to get rid of and select “Uninstall.”

Use a VPN

If you’re not already using one, a VPN might help your Fire TV run smoother. In fact, the problem may not be with your device at all. Your service provider could be throttling your connection. This is almost certainly the case if you’re using a jailbroken Fire TV with the Kodi app.

The solution is to run your connection through a Virtual Private Network. Any VPN will probably do the trick, but you’re well advised to use a reliable provider such as NordVPN.

Put Out the Fire Without a PIN

Whilst a good and reliable device, the Fire TV stick isn’t flawless. If you’re having issues with it lagging or freezing, it might be time to do a factory reset.

If you’ve forgotten your PIN, it’s a cinch to change it. Simply access your Amazon account and navigate to the parental controls of the Prime video page.

If you want to try to do a factory reset with just the remote, try holding down the right and return buttons at the PIN input screen. If that bypasses the PIN input, you’re in luck. Hopefully, the reset does the trick and you can breathe new life into your Fire TV.

Amazon’s Firestick is an affordable, easy, and quick way to stream movies, shows, and other media content. That being said, the device does have a tendency to experience performance drops, on account of being inundated with a large number of downloads and apps. Although you can delete the unnecessary apps one by one, chances are that performing a Factory Reset will provide the quickest and most effective solution. If you want your Firestick restored to its former glory, here’s how to perform a Factory Reset.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

PC Factory Reset

The Amazon Firestick can connect to Windows 10 PCs quickly and easily. To do this, simply plug the Amazon Stick into the TV, log into the device, and make sure that both the Firestick and your PC are connected to a single Wi-Fi network. Now, press Home on your Firestick Remote and, using the Right button, navigate to Mirroring. When the Amazon device enters the mode where it’s waiting for a connection, go to your PC.

In the Notifications area in the bottom right corner on Windows 10, you’ll see the Connect option. Click it and connect to MT’s Firestick (MT is the name of your Prime account). This will duplicate your PC screen onto the Fire TV, but you will be able to switch to a different projection mode, in the PC settings.

So, you’ve connected the Firestick to your PC. Now, how do you perform a Factory Reset? The answer is simple: you Factory Reset the Firestick in the same way you would if it was connected directly to your TV. However, while installing this device on your TV is straightforward, having it on PC is a bit more complicated.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

Installing Amazon Fire TV on a PC

Essentially, you’re going to need a third-party app in order to install and use Amazon Fire TV on your computer. These third-party apps essentially work as Android emulators that allow you to use the Firestick technology on your computer. You can find these emulators online and they are usually fairly easy to install and set up.

Firestick Factory Reset

To Factory Reset your Firestick, you can use different approaches. Some of these may be a bit confusing, but all of them should work with your PC. Here’s how to Factory Reset your Firestick.

Using the TV Settings

Once you’ve set up the Firestick on your PC, you’ll be able to use it just as you would when it’s directly connected to your TV set. To Factory Reset the device using the TV, turn on your TV and enter the Amazon Fire TV app. Use the remote to navigate to the Settings menu in the top part of the screen and enter it. Now, go to and click My Fire TV and scroll down until you get to the Reset to Factory Defaults option. As you probably presumed, click it and confirm by selecting Reset in the dialog box.

This process will take up to ten minutes, so be patient.

Using the Remote Buttons

Whether your PC app is unresponsive or the Settings menu isn’t accessible for any other reason, you can Factory Reset the Firestick using only your remote. Simply press the back and right buttons and hold them for ten-plus seconds. Now, refer to the on-screen instructions and Factory Reset the device.

Using Another Remote

If your Firestick remote isn’t working properly, you can always borrow someone else’s to perform a Factory Reset. Before borrowing a remote, however, try using your computer’s mouse, as it may function as a good replacement, in this instance. Now, simply follow the Using the PC Settings Factory Reset tutorial from above, and you’ve got it.

Without a Remote or PC

If you can’t access the Settings menu through your computer and can’t get your hands on a working remote, you can always use the Fire TV app for your phone. Download it, make sure that it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Firestick and your PC, and start it up. Once you’ve entered the four-digit code into your mobile device (you’ll be guided through the process), go to Settings, then System, and, finally, Reset to Factory Settings on your Android/iOS device.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

No PC, No Wi-Fi, No Remote

In the worst-case scenario of not being able to access your Fire TV using either your PC, Wi-Fi, or remote, there is a workaround. In these cases, you’re going to need to “fool” the Firestick into “believing” that it’s on your previous Wi-Fi network. One way to go about this is to change the name and password of your router to that of the network last-used by your Fire TV Stick. Another way would be doing the same thing but using the hotspot mode on your phone.

This will give you access to the Fire TV Stick, from where you’ll be able to revert it to the Factory Settings by following the above-outlined instructions.

Firestick Factory Reset

As you can see, there are many ways to return your Firestick to the Factory Settings. If none of these tips and solutions work, feel free to contact Amazon’s technical support team and have them help you solve the issues at hand. Either way, a Factory Reset will help boost your Firestick and return it to its original shine.

Have you ever performed a Factory Reset on your Fire TV? What was the issue? What solution did you use? Feel free to tell us your story in the comments section below.

Cord Cutters worldwide agree the Amazon Firestick and Fire TV Stick 4K are some of the best streaming devices available for the price. The worst thing about these streaming media players may be their tiny 8 GB internal storage.

This small memory profile fills up quickly, causing slow response times and even unresponsive behavior in the Fire Stick. Your Firestick or Fire TV will be much more responsive and feel like new again once you factory reset them.

If you have an older (2nd Generation) Amazon Fire TV, you can cheaply upgrade your storage capacity with an SD card. The 2nd gen Fire TV will even use an inserted SD card first when saving apps downloaded from the Amazon App Store or sideloaded from third-party developers before filling up internal storage. These fantastic devices were discontinued for some reason by Amazon, likely to avoid competing with the new Fire TV Cube. A second generation Fire TV

does occasionally pop up as a refurbished item in the Amazon store.

Check For Connection Issues First

Note that if you’re using Kodi or any other app that requires a jailbroken Firestick, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may be slowing down your internet connection. This slowing of internet connections happens quite often when people stream without a VPN to mask their activity. The lag and stream buffering can seem like the Firestick is at fault when really your internet connection is sharing your streaming activities for anyone to see.

The Surfshark VPN app for Firestick and Fire TV encrypts your connection so that even your ISP only sees random noise when monitoring your connection. Right now, you can try the best VPN in the world risk-free with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Resetting a Firestick 4K or Fire TV Stick takes only a few minutes and is even easier than unboxing a new Fire Stick. Note that all of your settings, apps, and files will be erased from your Fire OS system when you reset it. For this reason, make sure the issue isn’t just your connection being tampered with by your ISP or a bad WiFi connection.

You’ll need to reinstall everything again after the reset. This includes apps not provided by the Amazon App Store such as Kodi or any of the other streaming Firestick apps.

If your VPN is working fine and the issues continue, then the functional improvement to your Firestick makes the effort of a factory reset totally worth redoing the app installations and setup.

How To Reset Your Firestick or Fire TV in 4 Easy Steps

Root May Get You There When All Else Fails

While I won’t get into the details in this article about how to hack your Firestick for complete control of the Amazon FireOS system files, the tech curious and/or adept may take this route.

You can access the restoration settings if you know something about HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) and how you can use your TV remote to control your Firestick or Fire TV.

The linked page from the XDA-Developers forum starts down a very long, dark rabbit hole of true root access. This will require altering configuration files within your Firestick or Fire TV system FireOS directories.

I say “true rooting” because many people seem to think jailbreaking a Firestick is rooting it. Rooting devices gives far more control, but also requires far more understanding and responsibility.

The Amazon Fire TV and remote control are simple, yet effective. They are cheaply made of course, but they are robust enough for daily use and get the job done perfectly well. I have had mine for years and aside from a couple of issues with the remote, it has never let me down. This tutorial is going to walk you through how fix your Fire Stick remote when it stops working.

How to reset your amazon fire tv

The dongle seems bulletproof as long as you don’t mess with it. The few problems I have experienced and have heard others experiencing have been to do with the remote. Either losing the pairing, not responding or just refusing to work at all.

Here are a few ways to fix it if that happens to you.

Attention All Video Streamers: Here’s a few facts for you about the potential dangers of streaming online while unprotected:

  1. Your ISP has a direct window into everything you view and stream on the web
  2. Your ISP is now LEGALLY allowed to sell that information about what you view
  3. Most ISPs don’t want to deal with lawsuits directly, so oftentimes they will pass along your viewing information to protect themselves, further compromising your privacy.

The only way to protect your viewing and identity in the 3 above scenarios is by using a VPN. By streaming content directly through your ISP, you potentially expose everything you view on the internet to both them, as well as those who’s interest they might be protecting. A VPN protects that. Follow these 2 links and you’ll be streaming securely in no time:

Amazon sells them for not a lot of money but there are a couple of things you can try first. Some may seem obvious but troubleshooting is usually a process of elimination so we have to cover the basics.

Check the batteries

Sounds obvious right? If the remote begins acting strangely or not responding, shuffle the batteries or change them out. It is an obvious first step but the number of people who don’t think of it would amaze you. Or not.

So your first task is to swap out the batteries on the Fire Stick remote to see whether that fixes it or not. While you have the batteries out, check the batteries for leaks and make sure the contacts within the remote are clean.

Power cycle the Fire Stick

The Fire TV Stick comes with a power lead to give it the energy to stream content. Current HDMI standards cannot provide enough power so it has to use an adapter. If changing the batteries doesn’t work, remove power from the Fire Stick, leave it for a few seconds and power it back on again. Give it a minute to reload and then retest.

If you’re lucky, it was a software lock or glitch that stopped the remote working. If not, move on to one of these other steps.

Try the Amazon Fire TV Remote App

If power cycling the Fire TV and changing the batteries doesn’t work, let us see if it is the Fire TV or the remote that isn’t responding. Fire up the Amazon Fire TV Remote App on your phone and use that to control the Fire TV. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and use it as a remote. If the Fire TV responds it is likely the remote at fault. If it doesn’t respond, it’s the Fire TV that needs work.

Reset the Fire Stick

If your Amazon Fire TV is still stock then a factory reset will do nothing but require you to log into your Amazon account again. If you have loaded other software, such as Kodi or other apps, you will lose them. If that’s the case, you may want to leave this step until last. If you’re running a stock Fire Stick, try this.

  1. Select Settings from within the app.
  2. Select System and then Reset to Factory Defaults.
  3. Select Reset to confirm.

The reset process can take up to ten minutes so you need patience for this one. Once rebooted, your Fire TV Stick has been returned to as-new condition with new software. Retry your remote now to see if it works.

Re-pair your Fire Stick remote

The original remote that came with Fire TV should have been paired already but something may have happened that stopped one recognizing the other. If that happens, or if you decide to replace the remote, you can pair the two so they can talk to each other and do what you need them to do. This will only work if your remote has some life left in it. If it isn’t working at all, this will obviously not work.

  1. Power on the Fire TV Stick and your TV.
  2. Hold down the Home button on the remote for around 10 seconds.

Pairing should work first time but doesn’t always. If you’re confident that your remote is working and have tried these other fixes, retry this pairing a couple of times to make sure. If the remote is partially working, you can check what is paired within Settings and Controllers & Bluetooth Devices. You can also check pairing settings even if the remote doesn’t work with the Amazon Fire TV Remote App on your phone.

If none of those ways to fix your Fire Stick remote when it stops working get you up and running, it may be time to think of replacing one or the other. Good luck with it!

If you share your Fire Stick with friends or family, there’s a good chance that at some point, they’ll watch something that just doesn’t appeal to you. Other times, you open a movie or TV show and end up not liking it. While this in itself isn’t much of an issue, it can skew the “What to watch next” Amazon recommendations and the recent list on your Fire Stick. This article provides instructions on how to clear your Fire Stick history to ensure that you don’t have to wade through Peppa Pig to get to The Mandalorian.

How to Remove Items from Your Recently Watched List

Unfortunately, removing your viewing history from your Fire TV Stick isn’t quite as simple as deleting your browser history. Amazon uses everything that you’ve viewed to provide you with suggestions on what to watch next. Therefore, it’s in their best interest to maintain a list of what you’ve watched to try and persuade you to rent or buy something related.

There appears to be no way to truly delete viewing history on a Fire Stick from a Fire Stick. Other websites recommend opening the history, selecting the TV show or movie, and choosing the “Remove from recently watched” option. That does work, but only for a brief moment. When you return to the home screen, you’ll see it back in the recently watched carousel. So, how do you delete viewing history on a Fire Stick? Here are the details.

Before starting, make sure that you’ve got your Fire Stick plugged into your TV, that the TV is switched on, and that your Fire Stick is connected to your Wi-Fi network correctly.

Remove Watched History from Your Amazon Account using a Browser

The Fire Stick is tied to your Amazon account, meaning that your history gets pulled up from within the account. That is perhaps the reason you cannot erase watched history in your Fire Stick successfully. Here’s what you do.

  1. Open a browser a log into your amazon account.

The above steps should delete the chosen videos from your viewed list on your Fire Stick. After completing the deletions through your Amazon account, you may also try resetting your Fire Stick or deleting the viewed content stored in the Fire Stick. Regardless, completing the above steps won’t remove any purchased content from your Video Library (no method will), so you’ll still be able to watch anything you’ve paid for already.
