Much of our digital life today revolves around passwords, and they are often the primary, if not the only, way to authenticate a person’s credentials. Unfortunately, most of us forget passwords way more often than we’d like. A report by Hypr shows 78 percent of respondents said that they had to reset the passwords of at least one personal account in the last 90 days, and 57 percent had reset the password of their work account in the same period. This study shows that it is fairly common to forget and reset passwords, though we may hate to accept it. In an office setting, much of this authentication and resetting is handled by IT administrators. But what happens when the Windows 10 administrator password has to be reset? That’s what we’ll talk about in this article. We will see how to reset the Windows 10 administrator password using the command prompt and through other options.

Besides forgetting passwords, there will also be situations when you may have to reset them. Some possible situations are when:

    • A password has expired.
    • You suspect a potential breach of the system.
    • The organization wants you to reset your password due to changes in the organizational policies.
    • You choose to reset the password voluntarily.

Regardless of the reason, changing passwords is an arduous process as you may have to prove your identity through some authentication means before you can reset it.

There are many ways to reset the administrator password, depending on whether you’re using a local or a Microsoft account. And we’ll talk about both, though the bulk of the article will be about resetting local passwords simply because resetting the password of Microsoft accounts is easy.

Resetting the password of a local account

Your local account signs you only into this device and doesn’t link you with others. This is the key difference between a local and a Microsoft account.

If you have a local account, there are many ways to reset your password.

    Use the command prompt

One of the simplest ways to reset your admin password is by using the command prompt.

    • Open the command prompt with admin access,
    • Type net user . This will list all the accounts associated with the device including the admin account.
    • To replace the password, type net user account_name new_password .

This will replace your existing password with a new one.

    Change from the Control Panel

You can change your admin password through the control panel. To do that:

    • Open the Control Panel and navigate to User Accounts. Double-click it.
    • If there is more than one account, choose the one for which you want to reset the password.
    • On the next screen, look for an option called “Change the password.”
    • Enter your current password and the new one. You have to confirm your new password by typing it again. Also, enter the password hint if you want the computer to give a clue about your password.
    • Click the “Change Password” button to use the new password.

    Go through Windows settings

The next option is to change your password through Windows settings.

    • Type Windows key + I to open the Windows settings app.
    • Choose “Accounts.”
    • In the next window, look for “Sign-in options” located on the left-hand side.
    • Enter your current password and on the next screen, enter your new password twice. Type a password hint if you wish.
    • Click Next and this will change your password.

    Use Computer Management

The last option we’ll look at is Computer Management.

    • Go to your desktop and right-click on “This PC.”
    • Choose “manage” from the options and this will open the Computer Management window.
    • On the left-hand pane, expand the folders and navigate to Local Users and Groups > Users.
    • You’ll see all the users in the right-hand pane.
    • Right-click on the user you want and choose “Set Password.”
    • Click “Proceed” in the next window and enter your new password in the following window.
    • Click “Ok” and your password will be updated.

Thus, these are some of the ways to change your password when you have a local account.

So far, we saw how to change your password after you log in. But what happens if you forgot your admin password and are unable to log in?

    Resetting password before log in

You’d need the Microsoft Windows DVD or a bootable USB flash drive to log into the system. Once it’s ready, follow these steps.

    • Check if your PC is configured to boot from a DVD or USB flash drive. (You may have to access your computer’s BIOS to do this.)
    • Insert the Microsoft Windows DVD or a bootable USB flash drive.
    • As your computer boots up, press the Shift and F10 keys together. This will open your command prompt.
    • When your command prompt opens, make a copy of utilman.exe so that you can restore it later. Use this command:

    move c:\Windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\Windows\system32\utilman.exe.backup

    • Next, replace utilman.exe with cmd.exe. Use this command: “copy c:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\Windows\system32\utilman.exe.
    • Remove the DVD or the flash drive. Restart your computer. You can use the wpeutil reboot command.
    • When Windows 10 reboots, look for the Utility Manager icon located at the far left hand lower side of the window.
    • Click that. Since you have replaced the utility manager tool, a new command prompt will open up. Don’t worry about the error messages.
    • Add a new user and password. The command is: net user username /add . Make this user is the admin with this command: net localgroup administrators username /add .
    • Click on the screen in the background, and this will bring up the sign-in page. Click your new account and login without a password.
    • Once you log in, use any of the above-discussed methods to reset your password.

Also, replace cmd.exe with utilman.exe. Just reverse the above steps, and it should go back to the original state.

Resetting your Windows 10 password: Final words

Resetting your Windows 10 password is a fairly straightforward process if you have a Microsoft account because you can click the “Forgot password” link and reset it through your email. This is just a few minutes of work and is fairly self-explanatory. This is why Microsoft recommends you use a Microsoft-linked account and password as your login credentials.

On the other hand, resetting your local account is a little more work. Use the command prompt if you’re familiar with it, as that’s the easiest way when you’re already logged in. But if you’re not logged in and forgot your password, you’ll have to use a Microsoft Windows DVD or a bootable flash drive to reset it.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

So you locked your Windows computer with a password, and you forgot it. Don’t worry, it’s not that uncommon at all. It happened to me once when I was a teenager. That was back when we used the good old Windows XP OS. Most people use Windows 7, 8 or 10 these days, but the principles remain the same. I had no idea what to do, however, so we had to get one of my father’s friends to fix it for me. Luckily you for you, you won’t have to do that because you can use this guide instead and save yourself the embarrassment.

Do you have a Microsoft account or Local account?

The most important question is whether your account is a Microsoft account or Local account. If you have a Microsoft account you can reset your password pretty quickly. All you have to do is get on another computer and reset your Microsoft password. Microsoft will send a code to your email (the one that is connected to your Microsoft account) which you can use to create a new password. Then simply use the new password on your PC.

If you have a Local account it gets more difficult. Windows 10, version 1803 and beyond have the option security questions on Local accounts. If you set up the security questions and you enter an incorrect password and option to reset the password will appear. PressВ Reset password,В answer the securityВ questions you set up,В and then enter a new password. Then you can sign in with the new password.

How to generate a secure password?

You want a password that is easy to remember, of course, so that you don’t forget it again but at the same time you need to come up with something that’s virtually impossible to crack. After all, you don’t want anyone to access your computer without your permission, right?

So what exactly makes a strong password, well, strong? According to security researchers, there are two main factors: complexity and length. Complexity is fairly obvious to you, I’m sure. The more complex a password is the more difficult it is to hack it with brute force and dictionary-style attacks. It is highly recommended that you use both upper and lower case letters as well as symbols and numbers when creating your password. The more diverse the better.

On the other hand, length increases the overall strength of your password exponentially because each character you add adds a nearly incalculable amount of possible combinations. Think about it. The standard QWERTY keyboard has 26 lower case letters, so for a standard 8-character password, there are 26^8 possible combinations. Add another letter and it becomes 26^9. Now factor in complexity. Add 26 upper case letters and 33 special characters into the mix and what do you get? 85^9. Now add another character. I’m sure you can understand where I’m going with this.

The crux of the issue is that the longer and more complex you make a password the more difficult it is to remember it. For other passwords, I would recommend you use a password manager. However, since that is not an option for your Windows account (at least on system boot) then I suggest you write it down on a piece of paper or store it in a flash drive and keep it somewhere secure.

What if I don’t have security questions set up on my Local account?

Although WhatsApp lacks a password for signing in to your account, it does, however, have a two-step verification to keep anyone from gaining access to your account if they steal your SIM card. Here’s how you’re able to reset that 6-digit PIN if you’ve forgotten it.

Note: You must first set up the two-step verification from your setting, it isn’t automatically enabled when you initialize your account.

Obviously, you’ll need to recover your PIN if you forget it. But another time you might need to recover your PIN is when you switch phones, since WhatsApp require you to enter your two-step verification PIN on your new device once you download the app. You can’t really recover the same PIN you used, but you can get back into your account by resetting your PIN.

    Recovering Your PIN

Go ahead and open up WhatsApp and when it asks for your PIN, tap the “Forgot PIN” link.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

In the pop up, tap the “Send Email” option. This sends a message to the email address WhatsApp has on record for you—the same one you used to set up your two-step verification.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

Note: If you chose to not enter an email upon setup, you will have to wait up to 7 days before you can set a new PIN through the application. Any messages you would have received in this time may be lost as messages older than 6-7 days are deleted. For that reason, if you didn’t set up an email for your account, it’s a good idea to do so—especially if you’re setting up two-factor authentication.

    Next, tap the “OK” button.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

You should receive an email shortly with a link to turn off your two-step verification. Tap the link and you’ll be redirected to your WhatsApp account in your browser.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

Next, you’ll have to confirm that you really want to turn off two-step verification.

How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

That’s all there is to it. From here you’ll be able to log back into your app and start sending and receiving messages again.

Finally, because you turned off the extra security, don’t forget to set up two-step verification again, since your account isn’t fully secure until that’s re-enabled.

If you forget your Windows password it might seem like the end of the world. But don’t worry because we have you covered. Here’s how to get it back.

Forgetting your password can be a nightmare for any Windows user. It can happen if you are setting up a new installation for the first time and you haphazardly created a password without thoughtfully thinking about what you were creating. It could even be a password for an account you do not use often. In this article, we discuss how you can get your password back or reset it on Windows 10 and earlier Windows Operating Systems.

    Recover Lost Windows Password

    Hints

The first place I would start before trying anything invasive is the hint feature. When you first created an account and password, you were also prompted to create a hint, which can jog your memory and help you remember it. If this does not work, then move on to the next step.

Log into another Administrator Account on the system and reset the account

If you have more than one account on the system (which hopefully you do,) log into the other account and reset the password for the user account that you forgot. Keep in mind this would require that you know the password or know someone with an account on the system with Administrator privileges.

    • Press Windows key + R
    • Type:control userpasswords2
    • Hit Enter key on your keyboard
    • Select the account, then click Reset password
    • Enter the new password and confirm it, then click OK

Resetting your password is ideal, but what if you don’t have another account set up with Administrator privileges on your PC? If you used a Microsoft Account, try this trick. You’ll need access to your Microsoft Account Settings. So the first thing you will need to do is go to https://account.live.com/password/reset.

What if the Above Options Aren’t Available?

Well, your next best option would be to perform a custom Windows install, create a new account and a password you can remember. Proceed to recover your personal files from the Windows.old folder and reinstall your applications and drivers. It’s a chore, but it’s the next best option. Here is how you do that:

    • Boot from your Windows setup media
    • Select your Language, Time, and Keyboard Method, then click Next
    • Click Install now
    • Wait while Setup starts
    • Accept the license terms and click Next
    • Click Custom
    • Select the Primary Partition, then click Next

You will receive the following warning: The partition you selected might contain files from a previous Windows Installation. If it does, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you won’t be able to use your previous version of Windows. Click OK and wait while Windows installs.

When setup is complete, you can browse the system’s root and recover your personal files from your Windows.old folder.

When preparing this article, I noticed older functions such as the Create password reset disk do not seem to work anymore in Windows 10 or Windows 8x. If you are running an older version of Windows, such as Windows 7, and you are not in this situation of needing to recover your password, now would be a good time to create one.

Ways to Prevent Losing Your Password

I should also mention that avoiding this situation is to create a passphrase you can remember for your Microsoft Account. After that’s set up, you can use a simple four-digit PIN instead of a password. For more on that, read one of the following articles:

Also, you can set Windows to log in automatically. For obvious security reasons, this isn’t recommended if you share your PC or are in a public place. But if you live alone and know your situation is secure, it’s also an option. For more about that, read one of the following guides.

To help safeguard your data, set a passcode on your smartphone. If your smartphone supports Touch ID, you may frequently use your fingerprint as a substitute for your passcode. If your smartphone supports Face ID, you can use it instead of a passcode. When you perform the following, your smartphone will ask for your passcode:

    • Restart or turn on your device.
    • To unlock your smartphone, press the Home button or swipe up (you can change this)

Apple has just released the latest version of iOS, iOS 15.2. The current software version includes various new capabilities and bug updates, as well as the ability to lock and delete an iPhone or iPad without connecting it to a Windows PC or Mac. This is useful if a user forgets their iPhone password or PIN and want to delete and reset their device.

The most recent addition is the option to reset your devices if they enter Security Lockout status due to consecutive unsuccessful passcode attempts. If a user forgets their passcode on iOS 15.2 or iPadOS 15.2, they can use their Apple ID and password to wipe and reset their device. The latest iOS version includes a new “Erase Device” option that allows users to quickly remove all data and reset their iPhone or iPad.

When erasing or resetting your device, you will be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to validate your identification. This simplifies the process significantly over the previous technique, which required you to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode and reset the device using Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows. Let’s take a look at how to easily reset your iPhone using iOS 15.2:

Before we begin, it is crucial to know that the iPhone or iPad must be connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network before it can be locked. iOS 15.2 or iPadOS 15.2 or later should be installed on the iPhone or iPad.

    • When you are locked out of your iPhone due to several incorrect password attempts, locate the Erase Device option in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    • Choose Erase Device and confirm with a tap.
    • Sign out of your Apple ID on the device by entering your Apple ID and password.
    • To wipe all of your data and settings, select Erase Device.
    • When the iPhone or iPad resumes, you may resume configuring the device for yourself.

How to Reset Your Password with Another Admin Account in Windows 10

If you have another admin account (or there is another user with an admin account that can log in), you can use that account to reset your password. This can be done through the Control Panel. 4. Select the user profile you would like to reset the password for.
    5. Click on Change password. How to reset your windows pin if you forget it

Note: This option will only be available for local accounts.

  • Enter the user’s new password twice. Type in a password hint.
  • Then click Change password. How to reset your windows pin if you forget it
  • Finally, restart your computer to sign in with the new password.
  • The easiest way to reset a forgotten Windows password is to use a previously created password-reset disk. You can create such a disk (on USB removable media or a floppy) within the Windows User Accounts menu by opening the Windows Control Panel, selecting User Accounts, and clicking Create a password reset disk in the left pane. You should take this step with a new PC; once you have the disk, you can insert it when starting the PC to cause Windows to display the ‘Reset password’ option at the login screen, allowing you to regain access to your system.

However, if you don’t have a password-reset disk and you need to reset your Windows password, I suggest using the following Sticky Keys trick.

Reset Your Windows Password Using the Command Prompt

    1. Boot your computer using your Windows installation disc.

    2. Wait for the setup files to load, and select your language. Click Next.

    3. Click the Repair your computer link on the Install Windows screen.

    4. Select the operating system to repair, and note the drive letter on which the OS is installed (it is probably C: or D:). Click Next.

    5. Click Command Prompt at the bottom of the list of recovery tools.

Now you need to overwrite the Sticky Keys executable with the Command Prompt executable. Sticky Keys is an accessibility feature that allows a user to tap the Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or Windows key once to achieve the same effect as holding the key down. Ordinarily, tapping Shift five times activates Sticky Keys–but with this trick, you are going to make tapping Shift five times activate the Windows Command Prompt instead.

The instructions below use drive letter C: as an example. If your operating system is installed on another drive, replace C: with the appropriate drive letter.

    1. In the Command Prompt window, type copy c:windowssystem32sethc.exe c: and press Enter.

    2. Type copy /y c:windowssystem32cmd.exe c:windowssystem32sethc.exe and press Enter.

    3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot the computer. At the login screen, tap Shift five times. The Command Prompt will pop up.

    4. Type net user username password, replacing username with your username and password with a new password.

    5. Exit the Command Prompt, and log in using your new password.

To prevent another user from exploiting the same trick to reset your password, you can restore Sticky Keys as follows:

    1. Step through the instructions above to boot the PC using your Windows installation disc, open the recovery tools, and launch the Command Prompt.

    2. Type copy /y c:sethc.exe c:windowssystem32sethc.exe and press Enter.

    3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot the computer. Pressing Shift five times will now activate Sticky Keys instead of the Command Prompt. Store your Windows installation disc in a secure location.

Caution: Resetting a password using the Sticky Keys trick means you will lose access to encrypted files, encrypted email messages, and stored passwords for Internet Explorer and network resources. Remember to back up your important data regularly.

BitLocker helps secure your computer by requiring a personal identification number (PIN) or password to unlock the information that is stored on your computer. The PIN or password requirements are set by your organization and depend on the kind of drive being encrypted. Data on the encrypted drives cannot be viewed without entering the PIN or password. If your computer hardware includes an enabled Trusted Platform Module (TPM), the TPM chip prompts you for your PIN before Windows starts on your computer.

About Your BitLocker PIN and Passwords

Your company specifies the complexity required for your PIN or password. These requirements for your PIN or password are explained during the BitLocker setup process.

The password is used to unlock drives on your computer that do not contain the operating system. BitLocker will ask for your password after the PIN is requested during startup. Each BitLocker protected hard disk on your computer has its own unique password. You cannot unlock a BitLocker protected drive until you provide your password.

If you forget your PIN or password, your Help Desk can help you unlock BitLocker protected drives. To unlock a drive protected with BitLocker, contact your Help Desk if you need help.

How to unlock your computer if you forget your PIN or password

When you contact your Help Desk, you will need to provide them with the following information:

The first eight digits of your recovery key ID. This is a 32-digit code that BitLocker will display if you forget your PIN or password.

If you forget your PIN, you will have to enter the first eight digits of the recovery key ID, which will appear in the BitLocker Recovery console. The BitLocker Recovery console is a pre-Windows screen that will be displayed if you do not enter the correct PIN.

If you forget your password, look for the recovery key ID in the BitLocker Encryption Options Control Panel application. Select Unlock Drive and then click I cannot remember my password. The BitLocker Encryption Options application will then display a recovery key ID that you provide to Help Desk.

Once your Help Desk receives the necessary information, it will provide you with a recovery key over the phone or through e-mail.

If you forgot your PIN, enter the recovery key in the BitLocker Recovery console to unlock your computer.

If you forgot your password, enter the recovery key in the BitLocker Encryption Options Control Panel application, in the same location where you found the recovery key ID earlier. This will unlock the protected hard drive.

    Changing your PIN or Password

Before you can change the password on a BitLocker protected drive, you must unlock the drive. If the drive is not unlocked, select Unlock Drive, and then enter your current password. As soon as the drive is unlocked, you can select Manage your Password to change your current password.

How to Change your PIN or password

Click Start, and then select Control Panel. Control Panel opens in a new window.

Select System and Security, and then select BitLocker Encryption Options.

To change your PIN, select Manage Your PIN. Type your new PIN into both fields and select Reset PIN.

To change your password, select Manage Your Password. Enter your new password into both fields and select Reset Password.
