1. Load up the webpage you want to convert.

2. Head to the browser menu to find the “Print” option or use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + P.”

3. By default, it should let you save it as a PDF. You need to hit “Save,” and choose the destination and save the webpage.

The one major problem with this simple approach is that it includes all the elements on the page. This may include comments, footer etc. You may use a PDF editor to remove parts of it but that’s an additional task.

A better option is to utilize a browser extension like Print Friendly. It allows you to edit and remove parts of the webpage before downloading the PDF.

Method 2: Converting a Webpage to PDF or Images Using the Terminal

You probably already know that you can browse internet in Linux terminal and even download files using the command line. That’s not surprising considering you can do a lot more in the terminal, including downloading a webpage as PDF.

A nifty open-source command-line tools wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage come to the rescue that lets you convert any HTML webpage to a PDF or image file.

It utilizes the Qt WebKit rendering engine to get the task done. You can explore its GitHub page for more information.

You should be able to install it from the default repository of your Linux distribution. For Ubuntu-based distros, you can type in the command:

It is pretty straightforward to use no matter whether you want to convert it to a PDF or image file:

” data-medium-file=”https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint-300×140.png” data-large-file=”https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint.png” loading=”lazy” width=”736″ height=”344″ src=”https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint.png” alt=”htmltopdf mint” data-lazy-srcset=”https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint.png 736w, https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint-300×140.png 300w” data-lazy-sizes=”(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px” data-lazy-src=”https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/htmltopdf-mint.png?is-pending-load=1″ srcset=”data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7″>

To convert a webpage into a PDF, type in:

As an example, here’s how it would look:

You can choose to use the complete URL as “https://linuxmint.com” or use the domain name as shown in the example above.

The file generated will be saved in the home directory by default.

You also get a few exciting options when converting a webpage.

For instance, you can apply a grayscale filter to the PDF file, make multiple copies of the page in the same file, and exclude images during conversion.

The grayscale filter may not work on every webpage, but you can try that using the command:

To make multiple copies of pages in the same PDF file, the command would be:

And, if you want to exclude images from the web pages, just type:

Additionally, if you want to convert a webpage as an image, the command would look like this:

Note that unlike the GUI method using a browser, using these tools via the terminal has its limitation. It does not seem to convert web pages utilizing any code snippets successfully.

Sites like ours and even DuckDuckGo didn’t convert to PDF or an image. However, simple HTML sites like Linuxmint.com, Ubuntu.com, Google.com, worked like charm.

Wrapping Up

To get the best results, saving a webpage as a PDF using a browser seems to be the way to go. But, if you want more options and go through the terminal, the wkhtmltopdf utility should come in handy.

More info

Having a resource available offline is often a good idea as you can access it at any time without having to worry about Internet connectivity or availability of the resource on the Internet. All modern web browsers support basic functionality to save webpages to the local system.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Normally, when you click the “Save Page As” option, the browser downloads the content on the page and saves it as a HTML file and a folder that contains the media, icons, CSS code and other web elements that were present on the page. The number of files in the folder varies from website to website, and page to page.

Using an extension like Single File (Chrome, Firefox) or Save Page WE can help you save webpages as HTML files without the folders. This single file has all the content that was on the webpage.

Before we get into the options of the extension, let me show you an example. I saved this Wikipedia page using Firefox’s built-in “save page” option. I disabled the internet and opened the page from my hard drive.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Now compare it with the one saved by the Save Page WE extension. Can you see the differences?

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Allow me to highlight them. The web page’s favicon on the tab bar, the Wikipedia logo at the top left, the language icon on the left, and the user icon near the top right, are all missing in the one saved by the browser’s tool. The extension on the other hand saved them all perfectly as a 1:1 copy, and more importantly in just one file. In comparison, Firefox’s Save option had 17 files in total (HTML + a folder containing 16 files).

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

This may not be a big deal for this particular page, but if you had saved something else for future use and later discovered it was missing some important content, that can be annoying.

Save Page WE

The extension places a floppy icon on the toolbar, click on it to save the current web page. The keyboard shortcut for this is Alt + A. Depending on the content on the page, it may take a few seconds to pack it all into a single HTML file. A download dialog box will pop-up, which you can use to save the HTML document. You can open it in any browser of your choice, even on a mobile browser as all support opening HTML files.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Right-click on the Save Page WE toolbar icon to view its context menu. It has three options: Save Basic Items, Save Standard Items and Custom Items. What do these do? Basic Items saves the current web page’s contents such as the HTML and CSS elements, images, and font styles. Standard Items includes all Basic Items + HTML audio, video, objects and embedded files. Custom items lets you choose what you want to save from the above mention content. Use the Firefox add-on’s management page (or right-click on the icon in chrome) to access the extension’s options.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

The General Tab lets you set the default button action (save method) along with an option to preserve the page’s title. Some web pages may contain elements that cannot be saved; you can choose whether the add-on should warn you when a page contains such items, and also if it should list all un-saveable elements. The second tab, Saved Items, lets you define which custom elements should be saved when you use the “Save Custom Items” option. Though it also contains a list of Basic and Standard Items, none of these options can be modified.

Save Page WE saves the content as per the script on the website, and if you want it to avoid elements that have been blocked by content blockers (ad blockers like uBlock Origin), page editors, etc, you can enable the “Purge Elements” option in the Advanced tab. It may help in reducing the file size as well. Other options in this tab include blocking referer header, allowing mixed media content, and settings to manage nested frames, resource size and loading. You can set a custom shortcut for the add-ons save page action, from the Shortcuts tab.

Advantages of saving web pages as HTML

Saving webpages as a single file makes sharing them easier, especially if you want to send multiple pages. You can attach them to a mail, or via an instant messenger message, upload them to a cloud drive, or even transfer them to your phone for reading it on the go, without having to worry about the extra folders.

If you have dozens or hundreds of web pages saved on your computer, each of these will have its own folder, and when you put them all together in a directory it might become a bit messy. That’s not the case if you save the page as a single HTML file, so in terms of organization it has an edge. This also helps in renaming the saved pages without breaking any elements that it contains.

Save Page WE not only packs the content into the HTML, but also compresses it a bit. The web page’s file size can be an issue at times, in most cases the extension saved it in a smaller size, but occasionally the browser’s built-in tool was better. Here are 2 example screenshots. In the first image we can see the add-on outperforming the built-in tool by a slight margin.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

The 2nd picture shows that Save Page WE saved the page in a 13MB file, while Firefox managed to keep it less than 3MB.

Again, this depends on the web page, and when you accumulate tons of web pages it may make a difference depending on how much storage you can spare. You can download Save Page WE from the Chrome web store or from the Firefox Add-ons repository.

Warning: I couldn’t find the source code or even a web page for Save Page WE. Two other add-ons from the same developer are “Recommended by Mozilla”, which is a good sign. I’ve been using it for a long time too.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Did you know that you can save a web page as a PDF in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari? This allows you to read your favorite web pages offline whenever you want. You can also share these web-page PDFs with others.

The core of a web page is a file written in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Typically, the HTML file includes associations with other files that either appear on the web page or govern how it looks or works.

When you convert a web page to PDF, the HTML file and all associated files—such as JPEG images, Adobe FLA files, cascading style sheets, text files, image maps, and forms—are included in the conversion process.

The resulting PDF behaves much like the original web page. For example, the images, links, image maps, and most media files appear and function normally within the PDF. (Animated GIF files appear as still images, showing the last frame of the animation.)

Also, the PDF functions like any other PDF. For example, you can navigate through the file by scrolling or using bookmarks; users can add comments to it; you can add security, form fields, and other features that enhance it.

In preparing to convert web pages to PDF, consider the following factors, which affect how you approach the conversion process:

How much do you want to convert?

If you want to convert only selected areas of the currently open web page, use PDFMaker from within Internet Explorer . If you want to convert several levels or all of a multipage website to PDF, work within Acrobat.

Do you want to create a new PDF from the web pages or to append the converted pages to an existing PDF?

You can do both in either Acrobat or Internet Explorer , but you choose different buttons or commands to accomplish these things.

To convert Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) language web pages to PDF on a Roman (Western) system in Windows, you must have installed the CJK language support files while installing Acrobat. Also, it is preferable to select an appropriate encoding from the HTML conversion settings.

Acrobat installs an Adobe PDF toolbar in Internet Explorer (version 8.0 or later), Google Chrome, and Firefox. Using the commands on this toolbar, you can convert the currently displayed web page to PDF in various ways. For example, you can convert the entire web page or selected areas of it. Or, you can create a PDF or append the converted web page to an existing PDF. The toolbar has additional commands that initiate further actions after conversion, such as attaching the new PDF to a new email message or printing it.

See the video Creating PDF Files from a Web Browser for additional information.

All desktop web browsers support saving webpages to various formats. The option that is most exposed comes in form of the “Save As” menu that is available in various places, usually in the main menu and in the right-click menu of the active webpage.

The PDF saving option is quite hidden in comparison and it may be difficult to discover it on your own, especially if you never use the print dialog. PDF generation is available in the print menu in the browser, and not in the “Save As” menu.

How to Save a webpage as a PDF in all browsers

  • Press Ctrl-P on the keyboard.
  • Select the “Save as PDF” option under Destination.
  • Select Save.

The easiest option is to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-P to display the print dialog. The browser lists all printers and other printing options, including print to PDF there. Select the PDF option, e.g. Save as PDF in Google Chrome, and the print preview page is loaded. Just select Save again and a save dialog is displayed that you may use to name the document.

Not all generated PDF documents are equal

Are all PDF files identical that the browser’s generate? Far from it. All browsers ignore web content that is not related directly to the article in question; things like advertisements, menus or embedded videos are not included in the save.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

When you compare the file size of the output, you will notice differences between the browsers, especially when it comes to file size.

We compared the PDF file output of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave and Mozilla Firefox using Wikipedia’s Odyssey page and Ghacks’s Vivaldi Browser Review pages. All content blockers and tracking blockers were disabled or set to the lowest level during the tests.

Here is the result.

Browser Odyssey Vivaldi
Brave 1536 KB 746 KB
Chrome 990 KB 675 KB
Edge 990 KB 682 KB
Firefox 4347 KB 4854 KB

Edge and Chrome produce almost the same result when it comes to the size of the generated PDF document. Brave came close to the size only once, and produced a larger size document the other time. Firefox generated the largest documents of the browsers.

Why is there such a discrepancy?

All browsers saved all textual information and images correctly. Images could be one reason why the size differs so much; if Firefox saves the images in a higher resolution, the output file size would be larger. If you run all documents through a PDF compression tool or service, you will notice that all sizes are reduced. For the Vivaldi review PDFs, Firefox’s size dropped to about 800 KB, which is fine, as that is close enough to the file size of the PDFs generated by the other browsers. Problem is, the file sizes of these dropped to around 200 Kilobytes each, which again is quite the difference to the size of the compressed PDF generated by Firefox.

Closer inspection may reveal why Firefox PDFs are larger than those of the other three browsers that we tested.

Firefox users may use different PDF printers if installed on their devices. Windows comes with a PDF printer and the output size is a bit smaller when it is used instead of Firefox’s native option. It generated a 3800 KB file of the Vivaldi article, other PDF printers may be more effective.

To answer the title’s question: Chrome and Edge are the most effective when it comes to saving PDF documents in the browser, at least when you compare the four tested browsers.

Now You: do you use print to PDF in your browser?

  • @fullscreen – if you’re replying to me, then you do have “SingleFile” installed and you have pointed to its activation icon.

@jobeard – why should F disable (or just remove) the SingleFile extension for versions beyond 70?

  • Personally, I run with as few extensions or add-ons as possible for Performance and Security reasons, given that there’s almost always another way to perform the task.

With FF, there’s never a need for SingleFile. Chrome may be another issue altogether

I have followed a quick tutorial on how to implement Mozilla’s PDF viewer with React. I have made a codesanbox here. I would like to know if this is possible to implement with importing node module of pdfjs. So, instead of downloading the package in to public folder to use it with import:

Also, this kind of setup doesn’t work when PDF’s source is an URL. If I do that I get an error:

PDF.js v2.5.207 (build: 0974d6052) Message: file origin does not match viewer’s

I have commented out the part of the code where it checks the file’s origin in pdfjs-2.5.207-dist/web/viewer.js:

But, then I got an error:

PDF.js v2.5.207 (build: 0974d6052) Message: Failed to fetch

How can I fix this? Is it possible to import this package like a module into react component and how can I use it for PDF’s from external resources with URL?

Here is a working codesandbox with Mozilla’s viewer and your pdf.

    1. Your pdf must be served over HTTPS, otherwise you get this error :

Mixed Content: The page at ‘https://codesandbox.io/’ was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure resource ‘http://www.africau.edu/images/default/sample.pdf’. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.

    1. The server hosting the pdf should allow your app domain using Access-Control-Allow-Origin , or be in the same origin, otherwise you get this error :

Access to fetch at ‘https://www.adobe.com/support/products/enterprise/knowledgecenter/media/c4611_sample_explain.pdf’ from origin ‘https://lchyv.csb.app’ has been blocked by CORS policy: No ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ header is present on the requested resource. If an opaque response serves your needs, set the request’s mode to ‘no-cors’ to fetch the resource with CORS disabled.

    1. For the demo purpose, I used https://cors-anywhere.herokuapp.com/ , which sets Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * for you, but should not be used in production!

So in conclusion, your pdf didn’t load because of the browser’s restrictions. Importing pdfjs directly in your app, and building a viewer from scratch (which is a lot of work), won’t solve those problems.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Referrer Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin / Usage with external sources

The pdf should be located on the same host (including same protocol). Hosting the pdf on the same url as your app/website, should solve this problem.

Allowing a pdf to be loaded in other pages can lead to various security risks.

If you want to show an up-to-date version of an external pdf on your own homepage, there are basically two options.

    Hosting PDF on your server

Running a server script (cron) which downloads the pdf and hosts it on your own server.

    Allow cross-origin

If you have access to the server hosting the pdf you can send headers to allow cross-origin.

Documentation on this is really bad, but they have a repository pdfjs-dist and some related docs.

    Installation

    Usage (from DOC)

    Service Worker

You do need the service worker – pdfjs does not work without it, so neither does reactpdf.

If you use CRA, and do not want to use CDN, you can perform following steps:

    1) Copy worker to public folder

    2) Register Service Worker

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

I make changes to your example so it will accept an URL

    My code bellow

You can see the result here

Note: As others have already said, using just react (or any client side library), it is not possible to fetch an external resource (PDF in your case) without solving the CORS issue. You will need some kind of server-side tech to resolve it. (unless you own / have access to the external resource server) Looking at the sandbox code you have provided, it seems you are already using node js, but the solution is applicable for all.

Basically, you would request your server to fetch the file for you, and then return the file as a response payload. e.g. a node server listening to requests on fetchPdf and returns the file itself as response

Note: For educational & learning purposes, this will work, but there are various security issues with deploying your code to production this way.

If you find yourself needing to save a lot of temporary links and really dislike cluttering up your bookmarks, then you will certainly enjoy having this extension added to your Firefox Browser.

PDF is a dominant and well-used document format, so it’s natural that there are conversion tools for every sort of need you can throw at it. Converting a single webpage to a PDF document is dead easy with a number of online converters and browser extensions. If you regularly put a HTML page through a conversion program, you might also have come across a situation when you needed to convert multiple webpages in one go. Doing them one-by-one is a waste of time when you have a handy Firefox extension to tackle the batch job.

This Firefox add-on is no longer available for use.

Print pages to PDF is a 8.5 MB sized Firefox add-on that can create one single PDF file from any number of open browser tabs, and bookmarks folders. The size of the add-on could deter some, but when you consider the utility, Print pages to PDF is an essential download. That is, if your computer can handle the extra load.

After installing the Firefox add-on, you can access it via the right-click context menu on any active tab.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

The options are pretty much self-explanatory. You can choose to print the active tab only with all graphics and images, print only the text (with hyperlinks intact), or do the same thing with all open tabs.

You can also right-click on a bookmark folder and choose from the available two options to print the bookmarked webpages to a PDF document. This is useful because you don’t have to individually open each webpage in a tab and print them out together using the method described above.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

The add-on retrieves the pages and converts them to PDF in a flash. If the links are not reachable or the pages have moved, the process will display an error.

To accelerate your print jobs, you can bookmark all relevant pages into a temporary bookmark folder and print it out together.

Behind The Scenes – The Options

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Print pages to PDF is hardly a dumb tool as there are quite a few options you can configure. As the above screen shows, you can disable the auto-start if you want to change a few things on the fly. You can put a checkmark against the menus where you want to integrate the right-click print option.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

You can set a few global preferences like color or grayscale and compression to reduce the file size of the final document. Document layouts can also be optionally configured from the global settings. You can include a table of contents on the first page of the PDF.

PDF (Webpage) – Styling is something you should carefully consider to set the final look of your PDF document. The options here can determine if external and local links are to be kept, if any username or password is required for gaining access to a webpage, if the content needs to be increased in size etc.

Understanding the myriad options in the add-on’s settings isn’t difficult as every checkbox and field is explained when you hover your mouse over it. If the settings seem overwhelming to you, just go with the default. Your PDFs will come out fine.

Store, share, and review HTML web pages offline by converting them to PDFs. It’s easy and fast with Adobe Acrobat PDF tools.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

When to convert HTML pages to PDFs.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the system that governs the structure and layout of most websites. Whether you’re a student, teacher, designer, small-business owner, or online shopper, sometimes you need to make an HTML page portable and searchable.

With HTML-to-PDF conversion, you can share web pages in presentations and projects. Save a content-rich page without losing formatting or links. Collect ideas for a lookbook without losing image quality. Download long newspaper or magazine articles, or just save and store online receipts or order confirmations.

Why PDF is the right file format.

PDF (Portable Document Format) files are perfect for maintaining text formatting and the sharpness of charts, graphs, and high-quality photos. They meet ISO image standards so you know your colors will stay true.

When you convert a web page to PDF format, you don’t lose the HTML file or associated files like JPEG or PNG images, cascading style sheets, text files, image maps, or forms. Image links, image maps, and media files will appear and function as they did on the web (except for GIFs, which will appear as still images of the last frame).

A converted web page retains the functionality of a PDF, so you can extract text and add PDF bookmark tags to make information easier to find. You can combine PDFs or multiple file types into a single PDF and share with a link to collaborate or get feedback from multiple reviewers.

Tom Stallard asked for a way to save webpages, with all of the formatting and images intact, to local storage.

I know of two ways to save webpages as single, contained files. They won’t reproduce the exact layout of the page, but they’ll come very close. One will give you a standard .pdf file. The other technique produces a less ubiquitous .mht or .mhtml file. You’ll have fewer options for reading .mht files, but they usually get closer to the look of the original pages.

Both techniques work, with some variation, in Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox.

[Have a tech question? Ask PCWorld Contributing Editor Lincoln Spector. Send your query to [email protected].]

To create a .pdf, you simply “print” the page to pdf creation software.

Chrome makes this chore particularly easy. With the desired page loaded, press Ctrl-P to bring up the browser’s unique Print dialog box. Click the Change button in the Destination section. This brings up a list of your available printers. But in addition to the printers, you’ll find a Save as PDF option.

Ctrl-P will also bring up a printer dialog box in Internet Explorer or Chrome. Only these offer standard Windows dialog boxes, and lack a Save as PDF option. (They both offer a “Print to file” option, but you won’t find that to be satisfactory.)

So you’ll need a print-to-PDF program that interfaces with Windows as a print driver. There are plenty available, and you might have one installed that you don’t even know about. In researching this article, I discovered that I have four.

If you don’t have a PDF option among your print drivers, download and install the free version of the BullZip PDF Printer.

The MIME HTML (MHTML) format archives a webpage, putting the text, the code, and the images (but not audio and video) into a single file. It looks more like a webpage because it is, technically, a webpage.

Internet Explorer supports MHTML files out of the box. To save the page you’re looking at, press Ctrl-S to bring up the Save As dialog box. In the “Save as type” pull-down menu, select Web Archive, single file (*.mht).

Neither Firefox nor Chrome support MHTML by default, but there are ways around that.

For Chrome, it’s a bit more complicated. In the browser’s address field (where you type URLs), enter chrome://flags/ and press Enter. Search for the option Save Page as MHTML, and click the Enable link. Then close and re-open Chrome.

Once you’ve made these changes, the Save As dialog box (still Ctrl-S) will offer a MHT or MHTML option in the “Save as type” menu.

You can read MHTML files in Internet Explorer, and in the other browsers after you’ve made the changes described above. You can also download reader apps for Android and iOS.

Responsive design is the practice of designing a website so it looks and works properly on a range of different devices — particularly mobile phones and tablets as well as desktops and laptops.

The most obvious factor here is screen size, but there are other factors as well, including the pixel density of the display and whether it supports touch. Responsive Design Mode gives you a simple way to simulate these factors, to test how your website will look and behave on different devices.

    Toggling Responsive Design Mode¶

There are three ways to toggle Responsive Design Mode:

From the Firefox menu: Select Responsive Design Mode from the Web Developer submenu in the Firefox Menu (or Tools menu if you display the menu bar or are on macOS).

From the Developer Tools toolbox: Press the Responsive Design Mode button in the Toolbox’s toolbar:

From the keyboard: Press Ctrl + Shift + M (or Cmd + Opt + M on macOS).

    Controlling Responsive Design Mode¶

With Responsive Design Mode enabled, the content area for web pages is set to the screen size for a mobile device. Initially, it’s set to 320 x 480 pixels.

The device you select when in Responsive Design Mode and the orientation (portrait or landscape) is saved between sessions.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Information for the selected device is centered over the display. From left to right, the display includes:

Name of the selected device – A drop-down list that includes whatever devices you have selected from the Device Settings screen.

Screen size – You can edit the width and height values to change the device size by editing a number directly or using the Up and Down keys to increase or decrease the value by 1 pixels on each keypress or hold and Shift to change the value by 10.

The mouse wheel changes the size values by 1 pixel at a time

You can also change the device’s screen size by grabbing the bottom-right corner of the viewport and dragging it to the size you want.

Orientation (portrait or landscape) – This setting persists between sessions

DPR (pixel ratio) – Beginning with Firefox 68, the DPR is no longer editable; create a custom device in order to change the DPR

Throttling – A drop-down list where you can select the connection throttling to apply, for example 2G, 3G, or LTE

Enable/Disable touch simulation – Toggles whether or not Responsive Design Mode simulates touch events. While touch event simulation is enabled, mouse events are translated into touch events; this includes (starting in Firefox 79) translating a mouse-drag event into a touch-drag event. (Note that when touch simulation is enabled, this toolbar icon is blue; when simulation is disabled, it is black.

On the right end of the screen, three buttons allow you to:

Camera button – take a screenshot

Screenshots are saved to Firefox’s default download location.

If you checked “Screenshot to clipboard” in the Developer Tools Settings page, then the screenshot will be copied to the system clipboard.

Settings button – Opens the RDM settings menu

Close button – closes RDM mode and returns to regular browsing

The Settings menu includes the following commands:

Left-align Viewport – when checked moves the RDM viewport to the left side of the browser window

Show user agent – when checked displays the user agent string

The final two options define when the page is reloaded:

Reload when touch simulation is toggled: when this option is enabled, the page is reloaded whenever you toggle touch support.

Reload when user agent is changed: when this option is enabled, the page is reloaded whenever the user agent is changed.

Reloading on these changes can be helpful because certain page behaviors would otherwise not be applied. For example, many pages check for touch support on load and only add event handlers if it is supported, or only enable certain features on certain browsers.

However, if you are not interested in examining such features (maybe you are just checking the overall layout at different sizes), these reloads can waste time and possibly result in the loss of productive work, so it is useful to be able to control these reloads.

Now when you change such settings for the first time, you are given a warning message that tells you these reloads are no longer automatic, and informed about how you can make them automatic. For example:

    Developer Toolbox with RDM¶

You can show or hide the Developer Tools toolbox independently of toggling Responsive Design Mode itself:

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

While Responsive Design Mode is enabled, you can continue browsing as you normally would in the resized content area.

    Device selection¶

Just above the viewport there is a label “no device selected”; click this to see a list of device names. Select a device, and Responsive Design Mode sets the following properties to match the selected device:

Device pixel ratio (the ratio of device physical pixels to device-independent pixels)

    Touch event simulation

Additionally, Firefox sets the User-Agent HTTP request header to identify itself as the default browser on the selected device. For example, if you’ve selected an iPhone, then Firefox identifies itself as Safari. The navigator.userAgent property is set to the same value.

The devices listed in the drop-down are just a subset of the devices that can be selected. At the end of the drop-down, there is an item labeled Edit list. Select this to see a panel containing all the choices, which enables you to check the devices you want to see in the drop-down. The set of devices, and the values associated with each device, are taken from https://github.com/mozilla/simulated-devices. You can also define a custom device, as described below.

    Creating custom devices¶

You can create and save custom devices in Responsive Design Mode by clicking the Add Custom Device button. Each device can have its own:

    User Agent String

Also, you can preview the properties of existing devices by hovering over the name in the device modal, where they display in a tooltip.

    Network throttling¶

If you do all your development and testing using a very fast network connection, users may experience problems with your site if they are using a slower connection. In Responsive Design Mode, you can instruct the browser to emulate, very approximately, the characteristics of various different types of networks.

    The characteristics emulated are:

The table below lists the numbers associated with each network type, but please do not rely on this feature for exact performance measurements; it’s intended to give an approximate idea of the user experience in different conditions.

What is a PDF (Portable Document Format) file?

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a universal file format that comprises characteristics of both text documents and graphic images which makes it one of the most commonly used file types today. The reason PDF is so widely popular is that it can preserve original document formatting. PDF files always look identical on any device or operating system.

How to open a PDF file?

Most people head right to Adobe Acrobat Reader when they need to open a PDF. Adobe created the PDF standard and its program is certainly the most popular free PDF reader out there. It’s completely fine to use, but I find it to be a somewhat bloated program with lots of features that you may never need or want to use.

Most web browsers, like both Chrome and Firefox, can open PDFs themselves. You may or may not need an add-on or extension to do it, but it’s pretty handy to have one open automatically when you click a PDF link online. I highly recommend SumatraPDF or MuPDF if you’re after something a bit more. Both are free.

    What to Know

    • In the Firefox browser, go to Main Menu >Print.
    • In Print Preview, you can modify the page’s orientation and scale.
    • The Options tab allows you to change the look of the printed page, such as customizing the Header/Footer.

This article explains how to modify the page setup for printing in the Firefox browser. Instructions apply to the Mozilla Firefox web browser on the Windows, Mac OS X, macOS Sierra, and Linux operating systems.

    Find the Print Command

First, open the Firefox browser. Press the main menu button, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper-right corner of the browser window. When the pop-out menu appears, choose the Print option.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

    Orientation

Firefox’s Print Preview interface should now be displayed in a new window, showing what the active page will look like when it is sent to the designated printer or to a file.

At the top of this interface are multiple buttons and drop-down menus, including the ability to choose either Portrait or Landscape for print orientation.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

If Portrait (the default option) is selected, the page prints in the standard vertical format. If Landscape is selected, the page prints in horizontal format, commonly used when the default mode is not sufficient to fit some of the page contents.

    Scale

Located directly to the left of the Orientation options is the Scale setting, accompanied by a drop-down menu. Here you can modify the dimensions of a page for printing purposes. For example, by modifying the value to 50%, the page prints at a scale of half the original page.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

By default, the Shrink To Fit option is selected. When activated, the browser prints the page so that the web page is modified to fit the width of the printing paper. If you are interested in altering the scale value manually, select the drop-down menu, and choose the Custom option.

Also found in this interface is a button labeled Page Setup, which launches a dialog containing several print-related options that are split into two sections: Format & Options and Margins & Header/Footer.

    Options

The Options tab contains several options to change the look of the printed page, including an option accompanied by a check box labeled Print Background (colors & images). When printing a page, Firefox doesn’t automatically include background colors and images. This is by design since most people want to print only text and foreground images.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

If you want to print the entire contents of a page, including the background, select the box next to this option once so that it contains a check mark.

    Header and Footer

Under Options, Firefox also gives you the ability to customize the headers and footers of a print job in several ways. Information can be placed in the left corner, the center, and the right corner on the top (header) and bottom (footer) of the page. Any of the following items, selected from the drop-down menu, can be placed in any or all of the six locations provided.

Has it happened that you were filling a web form, or typing something on a site and suddenly Firefox crashed, or the tab got closed accidently? Not uncommon, right. And very frustrating too.

Well, there’s a solution. Firefox comes with a nice addon known as Lazarus: Form Recovery which saves your web form data in real-time and makes it available to you whenever you need it. Let’s see the addon in action.

Let’s say you are updating something on Twitter and suddenly your browser crashes. Now next time when you reopen the browser, it will reload Twitter.com (if it is set to save all the pages) but you will not find the update you wrote in the status message.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

In such cases, this addon springs into action. Right click on the provided blank space inside the box and you will get two options in the context menu. They are – Recover text and Recover Form (disabled in the screenshot). When you go with the first option, you will get the text you filled last time as your Twitter status. Simply click on it to reappear as a Twitter status.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

One amazing thing about this addon is that it gives you those text results too which you typed previously on the webpage. It means if you go to Facebook.com and right click on the status box, you could recover your earlier status messages that you typed.

    Lazarus Option

In Firefox, go to Tools-> Add-ons. Click on “Extensions” tab. Now click on Lazarus options button.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

In General tab, you can click various checkboxes to display icons in context menu, icons in statusbar and restore notification.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Go to Security tab. Here you can check the checkbox next to “Save passwords” to save all the passwords filled by you on any webpage. But it is not recommended by developers of addon because anyone who can access your computer, can access those passwords too.

You can choose the time for which saved forms remain in the database. After this time it will automatically get deleted. It is advisable to remove saved forms after 1 week or more.

You can also choose the password to restore forms. This option will be handy if you are checking the first option, i.e. Save passwords. No one can retrieve any data without entering the main password.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

Now the last tab is Database. Here you can choose weather you want to backup the database or not.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

How to turn off Lazarus for any particular site?

It’s simple. Open the webpage, now right click on the Lazarus icon present at the bottom right. Select “Disable Lazarus on this site”.

How to save a web page as a pdf in mozilla firefox

    Is your data is secure?

All the data you type in the webpage is recorded by this addon. It saves the data locally on your PC. It also encrypts it with 2048-bit RSA and 256-bit AES hybrid encryption. Plus you can set a password if you share your user account with someone else, so that he cannot access the web form data.

Download Lazarus Firefox Addon to recover web form data.

If you’re using Microsoft Edge and you’d like to save a copy of a web page for future reference, it’s easy to “print” the page to a PDF file on both Windows 10 and Mac platforms. Here’s how to do it.

These instructions apply for Windows 10 machines and Macs with only slight differences in graphical appearance.

First, open Edge and visit the web page you’d like to save as a PDF. Locate the ellipsis button (three dots aligned horizontally) in the upper-right corner of the window and click it.

If you’d like to change the orientation of the PDF file from portrait (vertical) to landscape (horizontal), click on “Landscape” in the “Layout” section.

And, if you preview the web page and see that you only need to save a few pages instead of the entire document, click on the text entry box and type the page number (or a range of page numbers) you’d like to save.

When you’re ready, click the “Save” button at the bottom of the Print window.

When the window closes, the website will be saved as a PDF file in the location you chose. To double-check, navigate to your save location, open the PDF, and see if it looks as you expect. If not, you can change the settings in the Print window and try again.

If you’d like to save other documents as PDF files for future reference, you can save a file as a PDF in any application on Windows 10 or on a Mac. On both operating systems, the process relies on built-in print-to-PDF functionality, which is very handy indeed.
