How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

When you buy a new Apple Watch, Mac computer, iPad, or iPhone, the delight of playing with your new device can be overshadowed by the hole it left in your bank account.

But there are lots of ways you can save a bit on the price of a new Apple product without giving up the delight of the latest tech innovations. If you’re willing to forgo some of the bells and whistles in exchange for a good deal, buying used is your best option for big savings.

Here are 9 of the best ways to save money on Apple products.

1. Buy certified refurbished products.

Buying certified refurbished products from Apple is the best way to get a discount on a current or almost-current generation Apple product.

Refurbished products have new cases and cables and have been thoroughly vetted by Apple. Certified refurbished products come with the same warranty as new Apple products and you can also buy Apple Care .

The selection of refurbished products changes often, so keep checking back if you don’t see the product or model you want. Refurbished products are discounted up to 15% off the price to buy the same product new.

2. Go back a generation.

When Apple releases a new iPhone, it drops the price on the previous generation of iPhone. The same is often true of other Apple devices. If you can wait, you can expect a price drop. For example, Apple took $100 off the iPhone 8 after the iPhone XS came out.

3. Buy second-hand.

If you don’t need the latest and greatest, you can score the biggest savings on Apple products when you buy them used. When the tech-addicted masses flock to grab the latest iPhone, MacBook, or Apple Watch, you can snap up the previous generation for much less than you would pay for a new device.

How-To Geek noted that, although buying used will get you the best price, Apple devices retain more value that most used tech. But be sure to compare prices for older Apple models between new and used — if you can buy the same older model new from Apple for an extra $100, that might be a better choice.

Are you a homeschool teacher, college student, parent of a college student, K-12 teacher, or faculty member? If so, Apple offers discounted Education Pricing on Macs and iPads. Here’s how to save some cash on your Apple hardware purchase.

Who Is Apple’s Education Discount for?

According to Apple’s sales terms, the following people are eligible to take advantage of the education discount in the USA:

  • Homeschool teachers teaching K-12 students.
  • K-12 teachers and other employees of K-12 institutions. Even school board members are eligible.
  • Students at higher education institutions, including students who have been accepted to a college or university but aren’t yet attending.
  • Parents of higher education students provided that they’re purchasing the hardware on behalf of their child.
  • Faculty and staff at higher education institutions.

Apple says that these products are not for resale.

How Do You Get Apple Education Pricing?

Here’s the best part: Getting Apple’s education discount is actually pretty simple. You just have to go to the right place on Apple’s website.

To start shopping, head to Apple’s Education Store website. Choose the products that you want to buy, check out, and buy them. It’s that simple.

How Much Do You Save?

But how much money can you save with the Education Store? Well, as of Nov. 27, 2020, the discounts are as follows:

  • MacBook Air: $899 on the Education Store vs. $999 normally (save $100)
  • MacBook Pro: $1,199 on the Education Store vs. $1,299 normally (save $100)
  • Mac mini: $679 on the Education Store vs. $699 normally (save $20)
  • iMac: $1,049 on the Education Store vs. $1,099 normally (save $50)
  • iMac Pro: $4,599 on the Education Store vs. $4,999 normally (save $400)
  • Mac Pro: $5,599 on the Education Store vs. $5,999 normally (save $400)
  • Pro Display XDR: $4,599 on the Education Store vs. $4,999 normally (save $400)
  • iPad Pro: $749 on the Education Store vs. $799 normally (save $50)
  • iPad Air: $549 on the Education Store vs. $599 normally (save $50)
  • iPad: $309 on the Education Store vs. $329 normally (save $20)
  • iPad mini: $379 on the Education Store vs. $399 normally (save $20)

Your savings will vary depending on the model you choose. For example, on some more expensive iMac models, you can save $100 instead of $50.

Of course, the products and discounts available may vary over time.

What Are the Limits?

There are limits on how much you can buy from the Education Store. According to Apple’s terms, each individual has the following purchase limits as of November 2020:

  • Desktop: one per year
  • Mac mini: one per year
  • MacBook: one per year
  • iPad: three per year

The limits reset each academic school year.

How Do You Prove You’re Eligible?

In the U.S., you don’t actually have to provide proof of your eligibility at the time of purchase, although Apple might contact you to request some sort of proof if they judge it necessary.

If you’re a student, teacher, or faculty member at an educational institution, you may want to use your email address for that institution to place the order. A .edu email address will make it pretty clear that you’re eligible.

Why You Shouldn’t Abuse Apple’s Education Pricing

While it may sound easy for anyone to get the discount, we highly recommend that you not abuse this system. Don’t order from the Education Store unless you’re actually eligible.

In its terms, Apple reserves the right to charge your credit card the difference between the normal price of the hardware and the education price you paid. If you don’t pay with a credit card, Apple says it reserves the right to invoice you for the difference in price and sue you if you don’t pay.

These terms are likely aimed at people who are really abusing this system—for example, resellers who order the maximum number of products every year and sell them elsewhere for cash. However, if you’re eligible for the education pricing, don’t worry about it.

What About Apple Education Pricing Outside of the United States?

Apple does offer education pricing in some other countries. If you live in another country, search the web for the “Apple Education Store” in your country. The discounts and eligibility may differ from country to country.

No one said buying Apple gear was going to be cheap, but here are ways you can shave a few dollars off your purchases by choosing to spend your money wisely.

Thinking about buying an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or some other piece of Apple-branded hardware? Here are a handful tips and tricks to help you make your money go further.

Note: When referring to “Apple Stores,” I mean both physical “bricks and mortar” stores and Apple’s online store.

Storage

This is an important one, so I’m going to spend a bit of time on this.

Since Apple uses storage capacity to create price tiers within products. So, if you go into an Apple Store looking for an iPhone 6S, you’ll be faced with a choice of capacities: 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Each bump in capacity will set you back $100. A similar set of tiers exists for the iPad and iPad touch, and even Macs use storage to create differentiation within product lines (although the pricing is more complex).

My top money-saving tip here is to think about how much storage you need before you buy a new product. Buy one with too little storage and you’ll end up being frustrated (and probably spend more money upgrading sooner than you’d intended to). Buy too much capacity and you’re throwing money away.

If you’re upgrading then use your existing device as a guide for how much storage you think you’ll need. Then factor in owning that device for a few years.

As a rule, if your current iPhone or iPad has 16GB or 32GB of storage and you’re using a good 50 to 75 percent of that, then 64GB is probably where you should be aiming. If you’re current device has 64GB, and you’re using some 50 to 75 percent of that storage, then spending the money on a new device with 128GB is probably worthwhile.

When it comes to Macs, it’s harder to guess how much you need, and the final decision comes down to how much data your think you’re going to be making and carrying around with you. In my experience, Macs with 256GB or thereabouts of storage are fine for people who live and work with the written word, but designers and A/V pros will need a lot more.

Remember too than you can add external storage to iPhones, iPads, and Macs, but factor in the hassle-quotient of carrying around a spare bit of hardware with you.

Know your upgrade cycle

Will you be upgrading yearly, every couple of years, or running your hardware until it’s dead/obsolete? The shorter duration you plan on owning something, the less you have to worry about future-proofing it.

Know in advance if you can upgrade your Mac

Be careful if you plan on “cheaping out” on the installed RAM in a Mac because you think you can upgrade that down the line because not every Mac is upgradable. In fact, no current MacBook can have the RAM upgraded (although given that 8GB is the starting point for RAM in new MacBooks, this is unlikely to be a problem for most users), and some iMacs are also not upgradable.

Be wary of overpriced accessories

Apple Stores are full of cool accessories for your newly-purchased device. But a few minutes spent Googling once you get home will uncover a vast array of cheaper options.

Not everything you buy needs to be “Apple-branded”

Don’t think that just because you buy an iPhone, iPad, Mac or whatever that you need to throw out your old hardware and replace it with Apple-branded stuff.

An example of this is backup hardware. Yes, Apple’s Time Capsule is a great bit of kit and a snap to set up, but remember that OS X’s Time Machine will work with any external hard drive and most network solutions – just point it to the drive and away it goes).

Consider “Apple Refurbished” hardware.

Apple sells refurbished Macs and iPads (and sometimes iPods and Apple TVs), as well as a range of other clearance items. It’s a good place to find some decent deals on older hardware.

iPhone Upgrade Program

If you’re the sort of person who upgrades their iPhone every year, then Apple’s new iPhone Upgrade Program could be worthwhile, especially if you buy AppleCare+ for your iPhone (it’s included in the monthly cost).

“Second-hand” doesn’t always mean cheap

Apple products tend to hold onto their value incredibly well, so you can forget about picking up bargains from eBay, Craigslist or the like. Sure, I’ve come across the odd good deal here and there, but as a rule, second-hand iPads, iPhones and Macs tend to be vastly overpriced. I’ve seen items that are listed as broken go for stupid money.

Apple in October 2020 launched Apple One, a new series of services bundles that will let Apple device customers purchase several services together in one package instead of separately, saving money for those who use multiple Apple service products.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)
‌‌Apple One‌‌ Bundle include services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple TV+, and more, depending on the tier you choose. Here’s how the Individual, Family, and Premier tiers stack up:

  • Individual: ‌Apple Music‌, ‌Apple TV+‌, ‌Apple Arcade‌, and 50GB of iCloud storage for $14.95 per month
  • Family: ‌Apple Music‌, ‌Apple TV+‌, ‌Apple Arcade‌, and 200GB of ‌iCloud‌ storage for $19.95 per month, can be shared among up to six family members
  • Premier: ‌Apple Music‌, ‌Apple TV+‌, ‌Apple Arcade‌, ‌Apple News‌+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of ‌iCloud‌ storage for $29.95 per month, can be shared among up to six family members

‌Apple One‌’s Individual tier offers savings of $6 per month, while the Family plan offers savings of over $8 per month, and the Premier plan offers a savings of over $25 per month, compared to standard monthly pricing. ‌Apple One‌ includes a 30-day free trial for any services that customers do not already have.

How to Sign Up for Apple One on iOS Devices (Method 1)

  1. Launch the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.

  • Tap the Get Apple One banner.
  • Select your preferred plan, then tap Start Free Trial.
  • How to Sign Up for Apple One on iOS Devices (Method 2)

    1. Launch the Settings app on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.
    2. Tap your Apple ID name banner at the top.
    3. Tap Subscriptions.

  • Tap the Get Apple One banner.
  • Select your preferred plan, then tap Start Free Trial.
  • Note that if you are already subscribed to an ‌iCloud‌ storage plan, you’ll need to make sure that you’re seeing the proper amount of storage, particularly if you use different Apple IDs for ‌iCloud‌ and your iTunes/App Store payments.

Some users are seeing their ‌Apple One‌ ‌iCloud‌ storage amounts being added on top of the existing ‌iCloud‌ plans they already pay for. Given how it works, you may want to cancel or adjust your ‌iCloud‌ plan accordingly. Users with different ‌iCloud‌ and iTunes/‌App Store‌ accounts should see a prompt that will allow them to assign their ‌Apple One‌ ‌iCloud‌ storage amount to their existing Apple ID they use for ‌iCloud‌ and automatically cancel their previous standalone subscription.

Apart from ‌iCloud‌, if you already pay for any other services included in your chosen ‌Apple One‌ tier, they will be automatically migrated to your ‌Apple One‌ bundle once the ‌Apple One‌ free trial period is over. You’ll have to continue paying separately for those individual services during your ‌Apple One‌ trial period, but once your ‌Apple One‌ trial ends and converts to a paid subscription, those standalone subscriptions will be folded into your ‌Apple One‌ subscription and you should be refunded for any pre-paid time remaining on the individual subscriptions.

Bear in mind that while Apple’s new ‌Apple One‌ series of services is available in over 100 countries and regions, the top Premier tier is limited to the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, since ‌Apple News‌+ is only available in those countries.

    Ratings and Reviews

    Useless for iPhone users

Just downloaded this, went through all the stores and clicked the ones I shop online most at… only to find that I have to use either my hated laptop or my PC for these to come into play. I’m going to now delete this app, as I do all my shopping from my phone. Not only that, but I had to go back and forth with all the security measures from the Capital One app sending me numbers via text and email just to be able to use the shopping app… and find out the above major disappointment.

As the one review I read said (I went ahead and downloaded because I had hoped that circumstances had changed) WHY even have a phone app when you can’t even use it with your phone. That’s beyond annoying and to me, patently rude. I’m just glad my other credit card hasn’t done that, and Capital One needs to catch up with them in many ways… especially in security.

    Capital1–wikibuy app unavailable.

Wikibuy developers really messed up! If you have an Apple product it is only available as an extension or app on your MAC COMPUTER. I have the iPhone 12 Pro with the latest 14.6 updated software. Most folks do their business with their smart phones, pads or tablets these days. CapitalOne advertises using A famous actor telling us that savings are automatically applied when you shop. For months now when I open my app it asked me if I want CapitalOne to automatically apply the coupons in savings and when I hit the “continue“ button it takes me directly to the App Store to the “CapitalOne shopping Dash wiki buy“ app. After which, I’m told time and time again that it is unavailable four “this device“! I am told once again that is for use for Mac only! If you folks aren’t capable or willing to make an Apple app then quit bothering me when I logon to my capital one account and lie and say I can “automatically get coupons and savings“ when I can’t!

Hey Wikibuy developers!… Don’t bother with your generic response to email you for support when there is NO SUPPORT since YOUR CAPONE WIKIBUY APP IS UNAVAILABLE IN THE APPLE STORE FOR IPHONES. that will so-called “automatically apply the savings”

CapOne should fire you guys and hire some real developers

    Developer Response ,

Hello, We’ll can look into this issue for you. Please send us a note at [email protected] so that we can follow up.

Good concept, but time consuming & inconvenient

I downloaded the app and was excited to save money with my purchases. Priceline is the most common benefit I try to use. However, every single time I visit through the app and enter all my trip details- the app just keeps resetting the page. I tried it literally 100 times and no success. As I was reading other reviews I noticed that people were saying the capital one shopping app is not compatible with phones, therefore that is why I assume I am unable to actually shop through the app to benefit from my rewards. Good concept, if it worked it would be wonderful. But it doesn’t work and if I have ro pull out a whole PC to use the benefits its totally takes away from the convenience of having an app on my phone. However, on the contratry I read literature that the app is compatible with safari and chrome browsers. I guess its just not compatible via cell phone. I wasted a lot of time trying to save money with this feature unknowingly.

Just because Apple rarely has offers on its products doesn’t mean that you can’t score excellent Apple deals. If you know how and where to shop for these deals, you can save some serious cash. We’ve compiled several ways to cheaply shop for Apple products.

    How to Score Apple Deals

One way to save money when shopping for Apple products is to buy refurbished gadgets. There’s a certified Apple Store page that specifically sells refurbished units. Keep in mind that these products aren’t used. They’re units returned to the factory because they had particular defects. Once the company fixes the issues, the products are as good as new but sold at a discount. You can save up to 15% when you buy a refurbished unit. Even better, they come with a one-year warranty.

If you’re a college student, faculty member or teacher, you can take advantage of the Apple’s Education Pricing program to get amazing Apple discounts. The company cuts down the prices on selected Macs and iPads up to $100 off. You’ll have to show proof of your student or faculty status to qualify for these discounts.

When it’s time to upgrade to the latest smartphone from Apple, consider signing up for the iPhone Upgrade Program. With this program, you make monthly installments of about $37 and get a new iPhone once you make 12 payments. While this doesn’t necessarily save you money, it’s much easier to pay the small installments rather than chucking out hundreds of dollars at once. The monthly payment is inclusive of the AppleCare+ coverage.

    Where to Find Apple Offers

Whether you’re looking for Apple coupons on tablets or discounts on Macs, you can be sure to save money with Apple-centered sites like MacRumors and AppleInsider. These sites have special pages with the latest Apple offers and deals. Check them out frequently to land the best deals of the day.

If you’re traveling regularly or have friends and family outside the country, you can take advantage of AppleCompass. This site allows you to figure out the cheapest places in the world to buy Apple products. When buying Apple items outside the U.S., ensure there aren’t major differences on the products (like keyboard layouts on a Mac).

While other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy have recently discounted products like Apple Airpods to $145, MassGenie has the best prices we’ve seen on similar items. A few Slickdealers have taken advantage of these offers, and so far everyone seems happy with their experiences. Felunk says their order shipped free with no tax, and they’re not worried about product defects since products are usually covered by Apple’s warranty.

    Apple Back to School Sales

For a limited time, the Apple Education Store often times kick-starts its Back to School sale with discounts on select 2019 Macbook Laptops and iMacs. As an added bonus, it also throws in a free pair of Beats Studio 3 Wireless Headphones, valued up to $350. Apple offers a trade-in program to help you save even more on your next computer. Just follow the trade-in prompt at the top of the product page, and you can get a trade-in value of up to $1400 for your old device.

Free shipping is available on all products, or you can opt to pick up at an Apple store near you where available.

Apple held its Spring Event today, introducing a a new budget iPhone model, the Apple iPhone SE (2022); a new iPad tablet, the iPad Air 4; a new 27-inch Studio Display monitor and a new, ultra-powerful Mac Studio computer for professionals.

You’ll need to wait to get your hands on these new Apple products, but discounts are already showing up on last year’s Apple models. That means it’s a great time to score a deal on all sorts of Apple products, from Apple iPads to the Apple iPhone to the Apple Watch Series 7.

    Top products in this article:

What are the new products from the Apple Spring Event?

The much-anticipated Apple MacBook Air 2022 — rumored to come in different colors like the 24-inch iMac from 2021 — was a no-show at the event, dubbed “Peek Performance.” The rumored 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro upgrade didn’t make an appearance either. However, Apple made up for that with other exciting launches.

On top of a number of original offerings for Apple TV+, Apple has announced two new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro finishes (green and alpine green respectively), the new A15 Bionic-powered iPhone SE ($429) and the new Apple iPad Air 5 ($599), which comes with Apple’s M1 chip and a slew of other upgrades. And that’s just in the mobile department.

Apple also showcased its new and customizable 27-inch Studio Display ($1,599 and up), which boasts a 5K Retina panel with 600 nits of brightness.

Finally, it revealed the ultra-powerful Mac Studio ($1,999 and up), which looks like a bigger Mac mini and comes in M1 Max and new M1 Ultra chip configurations.

Release date for the Apple iPhone SE, iPad Air 5, Studio Display and Mac Studio

The new Apple iPhone SE, iPad Air 5, Studio Display and Mac Studio will hit the shelves on March 18, as will the new iPhone 13 finishes.

The new iPhone SE, iPad Air 5 and iPhone 13 devices will be available for pre-order on Friday, March 11. Meanwhile, the Mac Studio and Studio Display are available for pre-order now.

The best Apple deals right now

Because Apple typically releases software upgrades every year, the previous generation of Apple iPhone, iPad and even MacBook products still offer snappy performance. There’s no need to worry about immediate obsolescence.

Whether you want an iPad Air or an iPhone SE (second generation), you’ll save big on the best deals for Apple devices at online retailers such as Walmart and Amazon.

Apple won’t likely update its Watch Series until later this year, but the Apple Watch Series 7 is already $50 off at Walmart. The latest Apple Watch boasts a larger OLED display, with a a crack-resistant front crystal that’s more than 50% thicker than that of the Series 6. It also offers 33% faster charging and an IP6X certification, which means it’s now resistant to dust.

Apple Watch SE: $249 and up

The Apple Watch SE connects to cellular (with activation and a monthly fee), which means that you can use it to make calls, send texts, stream music and much more, even without your phone nearby. Its Retina display is 30% larger than the display on the Series 3. Plus, it comes with fall detection (great for older adults) and many other additional features.

    Apple AirPods: $110 and up

The Apple AirPods Pro have made headlines by fitting in active noise-cancellation technology and hearing-health tracking in a more compact, better fitting design. Meanwhile, the third-generation Apple AirPods comes with their share of upgrades over predecessors — including sweat and water resistance. Though not part of Apple’s latest event, most of Apple’s AirPods are discounted right now, with Amazon offering up to 31% off, so it’s a good time to click that buy button, especially if you’ve been eyeing one of these models for a while now.

Apple MacBook Air: $994 and up

With a 13.3-inch Retina display and a weight of 2.8 pounds, the Apple MacBook Air is the lightest and most portable of the MacBooks. It’s powered by Apple’s snappy M1 chip, so it will see you through basic photo editing and light video editing. A great travel companion, it also boasts a battery life of up to 18 hours on a single charge. Sadly, the long-rumored MacBook Air update was nowhere to be seen at the spring event. Still, discounts are available.

    13″ Apple MacBook Pro: $1,215

The current 13-inch MacBook Pro is also on sale right now. It boasts a powerful active cooling system, which helps keep the 8-Core GPU running fast, plus up to 20 hours of battery life on a single charge and a brighter Retina display. Instead of physical function keys at the top of the backlit keyboard, it has a dynamic touch bar that changes based on what program you’re using.

iPhone SE (second generation): $374 and up

With a faster and more efficient A15 Bionic-powered Apple iPhone SE ($429) hitting the shelves on March 18, the previous-generation iPhone SE (second generation) is now discounted. As the best value Apple product, at least in the mobile market, the iPhone SE from 2020 comes with a 4.7-inch Retina display, the fast A13 Bionic chip, IP67 dust and water resistance, 12MP wide rear camera, 4K video recording capability and fast charging.

    iPad Air 4: $539

Now that the more powerful Apple iPad Air 5 is available for pre-order, the iPad Air 4 is seeing discounts at Walmart and Amazon. The iPad Air 4 might be an older model, but it’s powered by Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, which allows it to handle content creation, including video and photo editing. It also boasts a 12MP back camera, touch ID and a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with P3 wide color gamut. Purchase an Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, and you’ve got yourself a solid and more portable laptop alternative. We should see deeper discounts soon, but for now, we’re getting up to $60 off.

iPad Pro 2022: $747 and up

The Apple iPad Pro may not be a part of Apple’s spring releases, but there are deals available for these M1 chip-powered tablets. As Apple’s pro-level tablet, the iPad Pro features an 11-inch Liquid Retina XDR display (or a Liquid Retina display if you go for the 12.9-inch model), a pro camera system, 5G connectivity and a Thunderbolt with 40 Gbps of bandwidth for lightning-speed data transfers. Of course, it also has Apple Magic Keyboard compatibility for a traditional laptop experience.

    Mac mini

Although Apple’s smallest Mac, the Mac mini, wasn’t mentioned at the spring event, you can still save on the current M1 chip model on Amazon. This Mac mini promises up to 3x faster CPU performance and up to 6x faster graphics performance than its predecessor. That’s while maintaining a 7.7-inch form factor that allows you to save on desk space. It also comes with Thunderbolt connectivity, which lets you hook up a 6K external display.

Going to college? Or just work there? Here’s how to get an Apple student discount.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

It’s very handy to know how to get an Apple student discount. It doesn’t matter whether you’re just heading off to college, or if you’re a member of the faculty: saving money is always welcome.

Apple is well known for offering student discounts on a range of its products, and it’s important to get yourself a good machine — even if your education is in-person again. We’ve got a full guide to all of the best Apple student discounts, but before you check the deals out, here’s how to get Apple’s student discount, and save yourself some money on MacBooks, iPads, and more.

How to get an Apple student discount in the US

In the U.S. claiming your Apple student discount is easy, and is almost no different to actually purchasing from the Apple Store itself. Simply head over to the Apple Education Store and pick the listed Apple product you want to buy.

Clicking a product takes you to a new page that lets you pick a configuration and add it to your basket. From the basket, you simply check out as normal. There isn’t much to it, since Apple doesn’t appear to be checking any student IDs at any point.

That said, it’s always useful to have your ID handy, just in case Apple does ask for some sort of evidence you’re a college student, educator, or the parent of a college student. Likewise, if you buy in the Apple Store itself, expect the staff to want to check your credentials before they ring up your purchase.

How to claim your Apple student discount in the UK

Apple U.K. isn’t quite as trusting as its American counterpart, so you’d better be willing to jump through some hoops before you can save money on any Apple products. Hoops that will verify your eligibility for discounted tech.

The main method of verifying your eligibility is through student discount portal UNiDAYS. UNiDAYS is open to students or staff, and asks you to verify your account with the university you attend. This process can be started via a link at the top of Apple for Education website, or directly via this link.

To do this, you have to sign up for an account using your personal email address, and then disclose where you study, how long you’ll be there for, and what year you’re currently in.

You then get a choice to either verify your account via your institution’s own online portal, or via email. Naturally that has to be the academic email address that you were issued when you enrolled on your course.

Once that’s all done, you can head back to the Apple for Education website, link your UNiDays account to confirm you are eligible, and enjoy your discounted Apple products.

However, if that sounds like too much effort you can verify your eligibility directly with Apple. You will need a university ID or acceptance offer for this to work, but you can do it by either calling Apple on 0800 048 0408, visiting your nearest Apple store, or using the company’s online chat feature. A link to that can be found at the bottom of the Apple for education website.

How to get an Apple student discount: Who is eligible?

Apple’s student discount is available to students currently attending college, students that have been newly-accepted for college but haven’t started yet, their parents, plus college faculty and staff. Homeschool teachers in the U.S. also qualify for the discount, with no restrictions on what grade they teach.

What can you get an Apple student discount on?

Apple has a number of different offers and deals as part of its educational pricing system. MacBooks and iPads are the most prominent ones, but there are also plenty of other products that Apple has reduced specially for college students.

Sadly, the likes of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV are not included, meaning everyone has to pay full price for those.

But discounted products include the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), the iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard, and the iPad Air’s Smart Folio keyboard. How much of a discount you get will vary from product to product.

Students can also buy the ‘Pro Apps Bundle for Education’ which comes with Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Motion, Compressor, and MainStage for $199. That’s a discount of $430.

Anyone who buys a Mac, Pad Pro or iPad Air will also receive a free pair of AirPods and three free months of Apple Arcade. If regular AirPods aren’t your thing you can also choose to get AirPods Pro for $90 (down from $249) or AirPods with a wireless charging case for $40 (down from $199).

Finally, students also get 20% off the cost of AppleCare+, three free months of Apple Music and Apple TV+, plus free engraving when they buy AirTags or a 2nd generation Apple Pencil.

No more trolling Apple’s clearance page for deals; RefurbMe finds even more products and alerts you when they’re in stock.

Rick Broida is the author of numerous books and thousands of reviews, features and blog posts. He writes CNET’s popular Cheapskate blog and co-hosts Protocol 1: A Travelers Podcast (about the TV show Travelers). He lives in Michigan, where he previously owned two escape rooms (chronicled in the ebook “I Was a Middle-Aged Zombie”).

In the past, Apple products rarely went on sale. Today, you can often find discounts on the Apple Watches, iPads, MacBooks and more, usually at stores like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. Right now, for example, the Apple Watch Series 3 38mm is on sale for $169 , a savings of $30.

That said, I remain a big fan of refurbished Apple gear, especially when it comes from Apple proper . That’s because Apple routinely offers iPhones, Macs and other stuff for less than the price of new — but still exactly as good as new. Ah, but here’s the challenge: How can you find out when Apple’s clearance store adds something you want? And what if you’re looking for a particular model or configuration not offered by Apple proper? Where can you find third-party deals on refurbs?

Simple: Head to RefurbMe. Born years ago as a simple catalog of Apple’s own clearance items, the site now offers all manner of refurbished Apple products from many sources, like Amazon, Back Market, Gazelle and Mac of All Trades. Even better, it can alert you when a particular item becomes available.

The site is divided into six major sections: MacBooks, iPhone, Mac Desktop, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV. (You can also search for a specific product.) Click iPhone, for example, and you can then filter by model, carrier and other criteria.

Here’s one of the best refurbished iPhone XR deals currently available.

So, for example, if you happened to be looking for an unlocked iPhone XR ($499 at Amazon) , you’d quickly see that the lowest price comes from Back Market. (Whether or not that’s a smart buy is open to debate; just saying you can find it easily.)

If you’re looking for an item or configuration that’s not currently available, or just want to wait for a lower price, RefurbMe will let you create a product alert just by providing your email address.

Keep in mind, too, that RefurbMe is merely aggregating all refurbished Apple products under one roof. The product conditions, warranties and other factors can vary greatly from one seller to the next, so it’s up to you to do your homework.

What’s more, don’t assume that the site always has the latest and greatest deals. The best price it could find for me on the aforementioned Apple Watch Series 3 ($199 at Best Buy) was $179, $10 more than the current sale price on a new one. And RefurbMe doesn’t include pricing from stores like Best Buy and Target, so you’ll definitely want to search beyond its borders.

Nevertheless, I consider this a genuinely useful tool for anyone seeking to save money on Apple gear.

The iPad is a great device that is capable of varied tasks such as streaming movies, entertaining you with great games, becoming your digital library, or simply letting you browse the web on your couch. Here’s how to select the right iPad for you, get started with it quickly, and use it with your kids.

    How to Buy an iPad

The iPad comes in three sizes: the 7.9-inch iPad Mini, the 9.7-inch iPad, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. You can also buy an older refurbished iPad from Apple if you want to save a little money. Before you buy an iPad, decide how much storage you’ll need and if you need a 4G LTE connection.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

    iPad Models

The iPad Mini model is usually the cheapest iPad. It’s best for those who want to use the iPad while moving because it can be held in one hand and manipulated using the other.

The iPad Air model is the next step up. It is slightly more powerful than the Mini and has a 9.7-inch screen instead of a 7.9-inch screen. Other than the size and a slight boost in performance, the latest Air and the latest Mini are about the same.

The iPad Pro comes in two sizes. A 9.7-inch like the iPad Air and a 12.9-inch model. These models feature laptop-like performance and are great if you want to focus on productivity with the iPad. The iPad Pro can be a great home iPad too. The 12.9-inch iPad may be the ultimate family iPad.

    iPad Storage

One of your first important decisions is how much storage your hew iPad should have. Buy a device with at least 32 GB of storage. The iPad Pro models start with 32 GB, which is perfect for most people. The iPad Air and Mini models start with 16 GB and go up to 64 GB for the next highest model.

    Cellular or Wi-FI Only?

Most people will be surprised at how little they use cellular data on the iPad. With the ability to tether the iPad to the iPhone and use its data connection combined with so many Wi-Fi hotspots and coffee shops and hotels, it’s easy to live without a built-in connection. If you use the iPad for work and know that you will be traveling with it, the cellular may be worth it, but otherwise, skip it.

How to Get Started With the iPad

Once you have your iPad and set it up for the first time, you can start using it.

Basic navigation is simple on the iPad. Swipe the screen from left to right or right to left to move between pages. The Home button works as a Back button. So, when you tap an app to open it, you can get back out of the app by clicking the Home button.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

If you are in an app such as the Safari web browser, scroll up and down by swiping up or swiping down. Swipe your finger in the opposite direction you want the screen to move. For example, swipe up to scroll down. You can also get to the top of a web page, email message, or Facebook newsfeed by tapping the clock at the top of the screen.

To search the iPad, swipe down in the middle of the Home screen. This gesture activates Spotlight Search, which can search for anything on the iPad and checks the App Store, within apps, and the web.

How to Get the Most Out of an iPad

Now that you are working the iOS interface like a pro, it’s time to find out how to squeeze the most out of the iPad. Several great features aren’t readily apparent, such as being able to connect the iPad to a television set or how to multitask.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

One of the most important power features of the iPad is Siri. The Apple personal assistant often goes ignored, but it can do things such as remind you about tasks or help you to find the best pizza place near you.

You can also communicate with friends and family using Messages or make calls with FaceTime.

A Parent’s Guide to the iPad

The iPad can be a great entertainment tool for little ones and a great learning tool for kids of all ages. Secure your iPad so your child won’t run up high iTunes bills or modify or view sensitive information on the device.

    The Best iPad Apps

Common apps that enhance the iPad experience include:

    • Google Maps: The iPad Maps app is good, but Google Maps is better.
    • Crackle:Crackle is a mini version of Netflix without the subscription fees.
    • Pandora: Create a custom radio station with Pandora.
    • Yelp: Search for nearby restaurants or shops and read user reviews.

Browse for additional free apps to find apps that entertain, inform, store your files, and help you get work done.

If you’ve been an iOS user for a long time, you might remember the Report a Problem button from the early days of the App Store. Well, this button is back after many years in iOS 15, and you can use it to report a scam or fraud in the App Store.

This means that you can directly alert Apple about apps that have scammed you of money or demonstrated some other problematic behavior. Let’s learn more about this feature and how to report a problem in the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.

What’s the new ‘Report a Problem’ button in the App Store?

Earlier, the ‘Report a Problem’ button was hidden at the bottom of the Games or Apps tab in the App Store. It would take you to a webpage where you had four options to choose from:

    • Request a refund
    • Report suspicious activity
    • Find My Content
    • Report a quality issue

The limitation was that it lacked a straightforward way to report a scammy or otherwise problematic app. Apple has fixed that with the new iOS 15 Report a Problem button. It enables you to report any app that has in-app purchases directly. Here’s a list of options this button gives you:

    • Request a refund
    • Report a quality issue
    • Find my content
    • Report a scam or fraud
    • Report offensive, illegal, or abusive content

This is a much more effective and user-friendly way to report fake apps, scams, or other issues to Apple. Let’s check out the precise method below.

How to report frauds, scam apps, or abusive content in the App Store

    1. Open the App Store and find the app you want to report.
    2. Scroll down to the information section and tap Report a Problem.
You will be taken to Apple’s website.
    3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
    4. After signing in, tap the drop-down menu under the option What can we help you with?
    5. Select the appropriate option from the list given, namely:
      • Request a refund
      • Report a quality issue
      • Find my content
      • Report a scam or fraud
      • Report offensive, illegal, or abusive content
    6. Tap Next and describe the issue in the space provided.
    7. Tap Submit.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

You will see a confirmation from Apple saying that it will review the app based on your feedback.

Note: You won’t get any reply about action taken based on your report. So you will just have to wait and see what happens. Nonetheless, this is a good way to flag scam apps.

Is the iOS 15 ‘Report a Problem’ button available in your country?

In addition to iOS 15, the Report a Problem button is also available in iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey. Apple has said that it is currently available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand but will be rolled out to other regions soon.

In the meantime, if you’re not based in the currently supported countries, you could still get the button if you change the App Store country on your device. However, you will need to add the respective country’s payment and address method!

Here’s how to do this in iOS 15:

    1. Go to Settings and tap your profile at the top.
    2. Tap Media & Purchases and select View Account.
    3. Tap Country/Region.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

  • Select Change Country or Region.
  • Select the United States from the list.
  • Tap Agree to accept the Terms and Conditions.
  • Add a US payment method and address to complete the change.

Once done, go to the App Store and find a free app that offers in-app purchases. Scroll down to the information section, and you will see the ‘Report a Problem’ option at the bottom. If you can’t see it, restart your iPhone and check again.

It will be interesting to see how effective this new feature proves to be to keep scams and fake apps away from the App Store. One other step Apple needs to take is to increase its team of app reviewers to spot problematic apps early and ban them from the App Store.

Let me know your thoughts on this feature in the comments below.

Apple’s biggest revenue sources are the iPhone and its Americas segment

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is a global technology company that designs, manufactures, and sells smartphones, personal computers, tablets, wearables, and accessories. Some of its main products include the iPhone, the Mac line of personal computers and laptops, the iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. The company also has a fast-growing services business that includes its iCloud cloud service and its digital content streaming services such as Apple Music and Apple TV+, the latter launched in November 2019.

Apple faces numerous competitors including smartphone manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (005930) and LG Electronics Inc. (066570), computer manufacturers Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992) and Dell Technologies Inc. (DELL), streaming-content providers Spotify Technology S.A. (SPOT) and Netflix Inc. (NFLX), and other technology companies like Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN).

    Key Takeaways

    • Apple sells smartphones, personal computers, tablets, wearables and accessories, and services.
    • iPhones are Apple’s biggest source of revenue by product, and the Americas is its largest revenue generator among its geographic regions.
    • Apple’s services business generates the highest gross margins compared to its products business.
    • Apple is launching a new tap-to-pay feature that would allow payment platforms and apps to accept payment from customers using iPhones with no extra hardware.

    Apple’s Financials

Apple posted a net income of $34.6 billion on revenue of $123.9 billion in Q1 of its 2022 fiscal year (FY), the three-month period that ended Dec. 25, 2021. Apple refers to revenue as net sales in its financial reports. Both net income and revenue rose compared to the year-ago quarter. Net income grew 20.4% as revenue climbed 11.2%.

Both Apple’s Products and Services businesses grew during the quarter. Revenue for the Products business rose 9.1% compared to the year-ago quarter, comprising about 84% of Apple’s total revenue. Among its products, iPhones comprised 58% of total revenue; Macs (9%); iPads (6%); and Wearables, Home, and Accessories (12%). Services revenue grew 23.8% compared to the same quarter a year ago, comprising about 16% of Apple’s total revenue.

Apple has mounted a major corporate strategy to reduce its dependence on lower-margin hardware products, which face slowing growth while accelerating the growth of its Services business, which has higher margins and a more predictable, recurring revenue stream. Apple has introduced many new services in recent years, including Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+, and Apple Card. The company now offers many of its services in one simple plan called Apple One.

The high margins in Apple’s Services business have continued to rise. Gross margin as a percentage of sales was 72.4% in Q1 FY 2022. Its annual gross margin in FY 2021 was 69.7% compared to 66.0% in FY 2020 and 63.7% in FY 2019. Gross margin as a percentage of sales for Products was 38.4% in Q1 FY 2022. It was 35.3% in FY 2021, up from 31.5% in FY 2020 and from 32.2% in FY 2019.

    Apple’s Business Segments

Apple provides a breakdown of revenue and operating income for the following geographical segments: Americas; Europe; Greater China; Japan; and the rest of Asia Pacific.

Though the U.S. is still the dominant market, Asia is rapidly catching up. In Q1 FY 2022, markets in China, Japan, and Asia Pacific contributed more than 37% of operating income and more than 34% of revenue. That makes the Asia region dramatically more important than Europe to Apple for growth and profits.

    Americas

The Americas segment includes both North and South America. Revenue grew 11.2% in Q1 FY 2022 to $51.5 billion, comprising about 42% of Apple’s total revenue. Operating income grew 24.1% to $19.6 billion, comprising about 39% of the operating income for all segments.

    Europe

The Europe segment includes European countries, as well as India, the Middle East, and Africa. Revenue grew 8.9% in Q1 FY 2022 to $29.7 billion, comprising about 24% of Apple’s total revenue. Operating income grew 20.4% to $11.5 billion, comprising about 23% of combined operating income for all segments.

    Greater China

The Greater China segment includes mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Revenue rose 21.0% in Q1 FY 2022 to $25.8 billion, comprising about 21% of Apple’s total revenue. Operating income rose 31.1% to $11.2 billion, comprising about 23% of the combined operating income for all segments.

    Japan

Revenue for the segment fell 14.2% in Q1 FY 2022 to $7.1 billion, comprising about 6% of Apple’s total revenue. Operating income fell 4.4% to $3.3 billion, comprising about 7% of the combined operating income for all segments.

    Rest of Asia Pacific

The rest of the Asia Pacific segment includes Australia and those Asian countries not included in the company’s other reportable geographic segments. Revenue for the segment grew 19.3% in Q1 FY 2022 to $9.8 billion, comprising about 8% of Apple’s total revenue. Operating income grew 35.3% to $4.0 billion, comprising about 8% of the combined operating income for all segments.

A note to readers that the combined operating income used in the segment breakdowns above and in the pie charts was $49.7 billion in Q1 FY 2022. To arrive at Apple’s lower, reported consolidated operating income of $41.5 billion for the quarter, Apple makes deductions for research and development expenses and other corporate expenses.

    Apple’s Recent Developments

On Feb. 8, 2022, Apple said that it would be launching a tap-to-pay feature for the iPhone that would act as another payment option for customers of payment platforms and app developers. The new feature would allow merchants to accept payments from their customers using just iPhones without any extra hardware. Stripe Inc., a payment processor, will become the first platform to offer the new feature to customers this spring.

How Apple Reports Diversity and Inclusiveness

As part of our effort to improve the awareness of the importance of diversity in companies, we offer investors a glimpse into the transparency of Apple and its commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and social responsibility. We examined the data Apple releases to show you how it reports the diversity of its board and workforce to help readers make educated purchasing and investing decisions.

Below is a table of potential diversity measurements. It shows whether Apple discloses its data about the diversity of its board of directors, C-suite, general management, and employees overall, as is marked with a ✔. It also shows whether Apple breaks down those reports to reveal its diversity by race, gender, ability, veteran status, and membership in the LGBTQ+ community.

Here’s what you need to know about the price, features and free trial for Apple’s subscription services package for music, TV, games and iCloud storage — and the launch date for Apple Fitness Plus.

    Alison DeNisco Rayome

Alison DeNisco Rayome is a managing editor at CNET, now covering smart home topics after writing about services and software. Alison was previously an editor at TechRepublic.

Apple’s new service bundle Apple One is now available for Apple users , bringing together different combinations of subscriptions including Apple Music , Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, Apple News Plus , storage service iCloud and the new Apple Fitness Plus — which arrives Dec. 14 — under one price. The move, announced at Apple’s online event in September, follows Apple’s increased investment in services over the past three years.

Here’s everything you need to know about Apple One, including costs, free trials, the different plans and services available. We’ll also let you know whether subscribing will save you any money.

    What is Apple One?

Apple One is a subscription service that bundles together Apple’s existing services, letting you pay one monthly price to get several services at once. It’s somewhat similar to Amazon’s Prime set of services. You don’t have to subscribe to Apple One to access these services — if the only one you’re interested in is, say, Apple TV Plus, you can just keep paying the $5 a month as usual for that alone.

    When is Apple One available?

Now. At its September event, Apple executives said that Apple One would launch sometime this fall. But during the tech giant’s quarterly earnings report in October, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the bundle would go live on Oct. 30. On Tuesday the company announced that Fitness Plus would launch on Dec. 14 .

How much does Apple One cost? Is there a free trial?

Apple One offers three different plans (see below), ranging in price from $15 a month to $30 a month. There is a 30-day free trial available.

How do you sign up for Apple One?

Sign up for Apple One on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Apple TV. You have to be running iOS 14, iPadOS 14 or TVOS 14 . Later this fall, you’ll be able to sign up on your Mac running MacOS Big Sur .

To sign up, go to Settings, tap on your Apple ID and then tap on Subscriptions. Tap Get Apple One, and choose which plan you’d like. If you sign up for an individual Apple service, Apple will automatically recommend whether an Apple One subscription is a better value, taking into account any other services you already pay for.

What do the different Apple One plans include?

The three plans differ in terms of number of services, number of people who can access them, and amount of iCloud storage offered. Here’s how they break down (and you can read a full comparison of each Apple One plan here ):

    • Individual plan: $15 (£15, AU$20) a month for four services for one person: Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade and iCloud (50 gigabytes of storage)
    • Family plan: $20 (£20, AU$26) for four services for six family members: Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade and iCloud (200GB of storage)
    • Premier plan: $30 (£30, AU$40) for six services for six family members: Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, iCloud (2 terabytes of storage), Apple News Plus and Apple Fitness Plus (in the 100 countries and regions where they are available)

Here’s how the different Apple One plans break down.

    Apple/Screenshot by Sarah Tew/CNET

What do you get with each service?

Here’s what you get with each service available in the Apple One bundles, and how much they cost individually in the US.

Apple Music: Apple’s music streaming service , its alternative to Spotify, includes 70 million songs from popular artists, ad-free.

Standalone cost: $10 a month individual; $15 a month family.

Apple TV Plus: Apple’s movie and TV streaming service now has 30 original shows, including comedies, dramas, documentaries and talk shows.

    Standalone cost: $5 a month.

    Standalone cost: $5 a month.

iCloud storage: Apple’s cloud storage service automatically gives you 5 gigabytes of free storage, and lets you upgrade for more room for your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac or PC.

    Standalone cost: Free for up to 5GB, or $1 a month for 50GB, $3 a month for 200GB or $10 a month for 2TB.

Apple News Plus: Apple’s news service lets you access articles from hundreds of magazines and newspapers.

    Standalone cost: $10 a month.

Apple Fitness Plus: Apple’s new fitness streaming service , launching Dec. 14, offers guided workouts built for the Apple Watch ($349 at eBay) , similar to Peloton Digital and Fitbit Premium .

    Standalone cost: $10 a month.

Apple’s Fitness Plus workout streaming service will launch in December.

Would subscribing to Apple One save me any money?

It depends on how many of the services above you already subscribe to, or would want to subscribe to. If you were going to subscribe to all of them individually, you’d be paying at least $40 a month, so even the Premier plan would be worth it.

According to Apple, the Apple One Individual plan offers a savings of over $6 per month over standard monthly prices, while the Family plan offers a savings of over $8 per month, and the Premier plan offers a savings of over $25 per month, or up to $300 a year.

The service that may interest people the most is the least flashy: the iCloud photo and backup service . It’s already a popular service that is practically required for anyone who stores photos, videos or music downloads. If you’re already paying $10 a month for 2TB of iCloud storage, and also subscribe to, say, Apple Music, the Premier plan may be worth it to get you both of those and all of the rest.

What Does It Mean To Profit From Your Podcast?
Most people think it’s about money, but there is more than one way to profit from your podcast. Dave mentions that he spoke to someone recently who was super introverted when they started podcasting. And now this same person is doing their podcasts via Livestream. This person now has more confidence. While that’s not a form of money, that’s an example of a way to profit from a podcast. You can also grow your network and share your message with others. You can also helping other people through podcasting. For example, you could provide information that other people find useful, such as self-improvement, losing weight or getting out of debt.
The Most Common Question About Podcasting Dave says that the most common question he gets is “How do I get a sponsor?” He says because we are used to hearing ads on the radio, most people think getting a sponsor is a good idea for a podcast too. However, the payment for ads is very low such as $10 for 1000 downloads. In addition, having ads on a podcast can lead to a poor listener experience for what equates to just a few dollars of income. Instead, a better idea–and more profitable idea–to sell podcast listeners your own products such as coaching, a book, or some other product that the audience wants.
The Most Profitable Step For All Podcasters One thing Dave recommends is for everyone is to start an email list. No matter what you’re doing, at some point you want to have people to take action by clicking on something. Email invites people to take action. A podcast is just audio, so email is a great way to engage even further with your audience.

Dave built a portion of his email list using lead magnets. His approach was going to Google Analytics and finding the most popular pages on his website. In exchange for an email address, he offered a printable PDF that would be useful to the website visitor. So if you’re just starting out, this is a great way to start building your email list for you too.

The Number One Way To Market A Podcast According to Jacobs Media, 70% of people that find a podcast find it through word of mouth. So if you can get on other podcasts as a guest or things like that or have other people on your show those are good ideas. Build your network one person at a time. Have a link to your your podcast when you send out email to your email list. And don’t forget to have links to your podcast on your website. Don’t rely on Apple podcast search or Spotify search.
Figure Out Where Your Listeners Are It’s important to find where your listeners are. For example, Dave went to a LinkedIn event at a library, because the people attending were trying to grow their network. He knew he could help because a great way to grow your network is through podcasting. Dave also goes to events for authors that are trying to grow their listeners or their readers. So figure out who your audience is, and then go where they are. Make friends with those people. Then, at a later point, you can tell them about your podcast.
A Final Word If you’re looking to profit from your podcast, Dave recently wrote a book titled Profit From Your Podcast. I personally have been a member of the http://podcastguymedia.com/sop (School of Podcasting) (affiliate link) for almost seven years. I really love the community there.

Special thanks to Dave for being on the podcast.

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

How to save money on apple products (like the iphone ipad and mac)

It’s no secret that the printer and ink business is like the razor and razor blade business: Both sell hardware—printers or razors—as cheaply as possible while making most of their profit on the oft-replaced consumables—ink cartridges or razor blades. It’s a great strategy for a business, but not for consumers.

Back in 2016, when I wrote about Epson’s then-new EcoTank series of printers, I concluded that the more pages you print, the more money you’ll save with an EcoTank printer. I’ve been using one since then and estimate I’ve saved hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on ink since then.

    About Epson EcoTank Printers

For the record, EcoTank printers are designed to save you money on ink by using huge ink tanks that hold enough ink for up to two years, instead of expensive proprietary ink cartridges. Put another way, you’d need up to 20 ink cartridges (costing at least $25 each) to print as much as one EcoTank refill (costing less than $80).

I’ve been using my current printer—an Epson WorkForce EcoTank 4750—for about four years. It took more than a year to use up the four bottles of ink it came with. And, after refilling the tanks last year, I’ve still got three-quarters of a tank of all four colors.

I mention this because we’re about to sell our house and I’m not sure how long our stuff will be in storage. So, while it still works perfectly and has at least another year’s worth of ink in its tanks, I’m going to sell it and buy a new one when we resettle. And, when I do, you can bet I’ll be buying another Epson EcoTank.

Expensive but Worth It (to Me)

Now EcoTank printers are more expensive than comparable printers with cartridges. But, before you buy any printer, bear in mind that many (if not most) come with special low-capacity “starter” cartridges. You’ll need to replace them soon for around $80 and then, depending on how much you print, replace them again once or twice a year.

Multifunction Epson EcoTank printers start at $279 and come with a 2-year supply of ink. So, if you are considering a lower-priced cartridge-based printer, do the math before you decide. Estimate how many pages you expect to print each year, and then project the cost of enough ink to print them. I used about two sets of cartridges a year (at around $80 each) and expect my printers to be in service for at least 5 years. So, my ink cost would be around $800 for cartridges vs. $160 for EcoTank ink.

Bottom line: The more you print, the more you’ll save with an EcoTank printer. In my case it’s a no-brainer—I’ll save more than $600 over five years by choosing an EcoTank model.

Apple in the age of COVID-19: After years of depending on iPhone revenue, COVID-19 seemed to shift consumers’ eyes back to iPads and Macs, and that isn’t expected to change just yet

This article is part of a series tracking the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on major businesses and sectors. For other articles and earlier versions, go here.

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a more digital world, giving new life to Apple Inc.’s sleepier product categories and positioning the company to capitalize on improving spending if the economy rebounds in the next year.

Despite store closures, supply-chain disruptions, and strained finances for many customers, Apple AAPL, -1.92% proved one of the biggest winners in the first year of the pandemic as it posted a record fiscal year and saw its stock nearly double. Now with its U.S. stores back open and the job market poised to recover, analysts expect that Apple could work past its pandemic-related challenges while continuing to benefit from increased reliance on technology.

Though Apple’s story has revolved around the iPhone for years, the company’s Macs and iPads became especially critical to people adjusting to remote work and remote learning during the pandemic. The Mac business had been essentially flat from fiscal 2017 to 2019, but rebounded sharply during the COVID-19 crisis, with each of the last three quarters sporting revenue growth of more than 20% amid increasing demand for new personal computers.

Apple’s $9.03 billion in Mac revenue during the September quarter became a new company record as families prepared for even more schooling centered on the home.

Amid growing demand for personal computers, Apple jazzed up its offerings with the November rollout of new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers that are the first to feature Apple’s custom-designed M1 chip, which promises performance improvements. The company pointed to strong demand for these new models on Apple’s latest earnings call, with Chief Executive Tim Cook remarking that the new custom chip “gives us a new growth trajectory that we haven’t had in the past.”

The iPad business saw its own revival, growing revenue by upwards of 31% in each of the past three quarters, led by a 46% increase in the back-to-school September quarter.

A move toward hybrid workforces should continue to benefit Apple, D.A. Davidson analyst Tom Forte told MarketWatch, as it means “sustained high demand” for Apple products like Macs and iPads.

Strong pandemic-driven sales mean that those categories will have trouble fully matching their 2020 momentum going forward, with analysts tracked by FactSet calling for both to post at least three quarters in a row of declining year-over-year revenue beginning with the June quarter.

iPhone could benefit from 5G maturation

On an overall basis, however, the company is projected to grow revenue by 22% for the full fiscal year, driven by a resurgent iPhone business. Moderating growth in Macs and iPads probably won’t matter much for Apple’s valuation, while strength in iPhones would be a key focus.

The pandemic created an interesting dynamic for the iPhone as Apple launched its first 5G lineup late last year. Paradoxically, though 5G was the key selling point of the iPhone 12 family, people had fewer chances to test out the new wireless standard on their new phones, and Forte said that was probably good news for Apple.

“The experience for many became using a new smartphone with a faster processor on home WiFi rather than on an undeveloped 5G network,” he said. There “may have been more risk of frustrated customers” had more people been relying extensively on 5G outside the home, only to discover that the new networks offered little in the way of speed benefits.

Apple released its new iPhone models later than usual, with two out in late October and two in November, though the company still posted a record quarter of iPhone sales in the holiday period. Analysts say this part of the business could see further success as the economy improves.

“A thousand-dollar phone is a lot more expensive to many today than it was pre-March 2020,” Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives told MarketWatch, given the backdrop of layoffs. “As you start to see job growth return and more money in the pockets of consumers, that’s going to be beneficial for discretionary items like iPhones.”

He estimates that 10% to 15% of iPhone demand was wiped out due to a lack of in-store interaction and strained consumer finances but predicts stronger demand for the remainder of the iPhone 12 cycle and into the expected iPhone 13 launch later this year.

Services stand to benefit from age

Improved consumer confidence and growing device sales could bode well for Apple’s services segment, Ives said. Services and the iPhone are “the heart and lungs” of the company, he argued, so a greater appreciation for these parts of the business are key to sending Apple’s stock higher and helping Apple achieve what he sees as perhaps a $3 trillion valuation by the end of this year.

Apple was late to the game with its Apple TV+ streaming service and its Fitness+ subscription exercise service, but Lopez Research principal analyst Maribel Lopez said that Apple probably got “a lot more play on their content than they would have if not for COVID.”

The key will be keeping those new users as life returns to normal, especially as TV+ has a smaller library of original shows than other streaming services and suffered from production halts last year like other media businesses.

Apple executives have also called out some pressure to Apple Care insurance policies, though this element of the services business could rally now that Apple has reopened all of its U.S. stores in some capacity. “With consumers buying their devices online, attachment rates for things like Apple Care suffered,” Forte said. Add-ons like Apple Care are things that salespeople can pitch but that consumers might ignore when making a purchase online.

Then there’s the question of the Apple intangibles. The company “typically had not been known as [having] an out-of-the-building, work-from-home engineering culture,” Lopez said, and she speculated that the company may have been able to roll out its custom-chip architecture or other design initiatives more quickly if not for disruptions to office life.
