Group chats are the bane of most WhatsApp users’ existence. Just when you put your phone down, your mates decide to solve world hunger, the nuclear proliferation problem, and the unconscionable decision to push Game of Thrones’ final season back to 2019. Here’s how to get a handle on all those notifications.
While we’ve already looked at how to mute group chats for eight hours, one week, or one year, that’s more of a blunt fix for a specific group chat that’s getting out of hand in the short term rather than a reasonable solution. If, instead, you want to tame all group chats, you need to change how WhatsApp notifies you of new group messages.
Open WhatsApp and head to Settings > Notifications. Here’s what it looks like on iOS.
There are a couple of different things you can do here. For example, you can change the notification sound by selecting Sound on iOS (left, below) or Notification Tone on Android (right, below) under Group Notifications. On iOS, you also have another option. If you turn off Show Notifications, you won’t even get a popup when you get a group message. This is probably a bit much though, unless you’re in no groups you care about.
Select a new tone (including “None”), and then hit “Save” or “OK.”
If you select None, you’ll still get a notification when you get a group message, but it won’t make a sound. That’s a pretty good fix if you’re just looking to not be annoyed by a dinging phone all the time. Alternatively, you can select a different notification tone. This way, you’ll still get a sound alert when you get a group message, but you’ll be able to tell it’s probably not urgent.

Are you in so many WhatsApp groups that it’s not even funny? You’re in the WhatsApp group for Work, School, Family, and not taking into consideration the one you’ve forgotten about. Some groups are not as annoying as others since you only get notifications for things that you consider important.
But, there are other groups whose conversations don’t seem to end, ever. You could silence your phone, but you could miss out on something important from an important group. The good news is that WhatsApp has added the feature all users have been waiting for. Silencing group notifications forever!
How to Disable WhatsApp Group Notifications Permanently
To get some peace and quiet, sometimes you have no choice but to mute someone. Muting someone isn’t going to prevent them from seeing your status or sending you more messages, but at least you won’t hear the notification sound for that group ever again. Or until you undo the muting.
To mute any WhatsApp group, open the app and find the group whose notification you want to silence. Long-press on the group and tap on the speaker icon with a line across it at the top. You’ll know that the process was done correctly when you see the speaker with the line across it at the group’s bottom right in the chat list.
A new window will appear with options to mute the notification for eight hours, One hour, or Always. Before, WhatsApp could mute the notifications for a year, but that option has been replaced with the Always option.
You’ll need to repeat this process for all the groups whose notifications you want to mute. You can also mute group notification for WhatsApp through your device’s settings, but that will silence all groups. If that’s something you want to do, maybe to take a break from all notifications, you’ll need to do the following.
How to Disable WhatsApp Group Notifications Through Android Settings
To turn off group notifications via settings, open settings and go to App & notifications > All X apps > Choose WhatsApp > Notifications > Group Notifications.
How to UnMute WhatsApp Group Notifications
If you can’t continue to ignore a certain group’s notifications, you can unmute the group by locating it and long-press on it. The speaker icon will no longer have a line across it; it’ll have sound waves coming out of it. Tap on the speaker, and the speaker icon with the line across it on the chat will disappear.
As important as notifications maybe, taking a break from them from time to time is always a good thing. Some users just can’t resist checking their messages when they know they’ve received a WhatsApp message. Do you sometimes disable your WhatsApp group notifications?
Not everyone likes to have to be notified when their friends on WhatsApp group chat decides to send a message in the group. There is a way to put those notification sounds to stop.

Notifications in Windows have evolved over time, and Windows 10 further expanded the whole notification system. Notifications now slide out along the bottom right of your screen and each is accompanied by a chime, which can be irksome whenever files are added to your Dropbox or you plug in a new device.
Now that notifications are cataloged in the Action Center, you can view notifications you might have missed. So, if you still want to see notification banners in the lower-right corner of the screen, but you find the notification sounds annoying, you can turn the sounds off without fearing that you might miss important notifications.
To access Windows 10’s notification settings, click the notifications icon in the taskbar’s system tray area, then click the “All settings” button.
On the main Settings screen, click the “System” option.
Click the “Notifications & actions” category.
Under the “Notifications” section, the “Get notifications from apps and other senders” option allows you to turn notifications completely off.
Below the main Notifications options, there are options to disable certain apps from displaying notifications. You can also choose notification settings for each of these apps individually. To customize notifications for a specific app, click on that app in the list. For example, we want to see notifications from Outlook when we get new emails, but we’d rather not hear a sound every time, so we click “Outlook 2016” in the list.
To disable the notification sound for the selected app, click the “Play a sound when a notification arrives” slider button so it turns white and reads Off. You can also set various other notification settings on this screen, such as whether you want to see notification banners, keep notifications private on the lock screen, show notifications in the action center, and the number of notifications visible in the action center.
To close the Settings window, click the “X” in the upper-right corner.
You have to turn off the notification sounds for each app separately. But, once you do, you can enjoy getting notifications without the annoying chime.
The groups are completely muted – no sound and no notifications allowed.
Still, occasionally I get WhatsApp notifications (with sound and vibrations) that immediately disappear.
I can see the WhatsApp icon in the notifications bar coming and going within a second.
When I enter WhatsApp – I see that I have a new message in muted group (no mentions, just regular messages).
Is it possible to stop that very annoying behavior?
(Without completely disabling all WhatsApp notifications, sometimes I still need them)
Device: LG G5, Android 7.0, stock ROM, no root.
1 Answer 1
As you mention that the notification comes and goes within a second, I think that it’s actually a WhatsApp notification which says “Checking for new messages” – a screenshot of that notification can be found in this MIUI thread. It is not related to your groups, muting them will not make any difference.
I’ve occasionally seen it myself; it appears and disappears extremely quickly. If you want to verify what the notification actually is, check your phone’s notification log which can be viewed by creating a settings shortcut to the log on the desktop using your launcher of choice.
I’ve seen speculations that it only appears if your internet is spotty, or if WhatsApp cannot work in the background for whatever reason (eg Data Saver is on, your phone/ROM is extremely aggressive with background tasks like MIUI is or because of low RAM). Another notification which appears under similar conditions is “You may have new messages”, but that messages stays permanently until you open WhatsApp.
As for how to disable it without stopping all other WhatsApp notifications, it would natively only be possible in Android Oreo because of support for notification channels. I think the relevant channel for the notification is “Other Notifications”. I’ve disabled that channel and I haven’t seen the notification in ages (then again, can also be because I’ve never met the conditions for seeing the notification ever after).
I should also warn you that disabling the channel also turns off other notifications like “WhatsApp Web is running” – check everything carefully!
