How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Since I updated my Mac to the latest macOS version, the Photos app has decided to automatically launch every time I plug my iPhone in my computer for charging. This is kind of an annoying behavior which I’ve quickly taken care of in the past for iPhotos and iTunes. Here we go again, this time with Photos.

My first instinct was to go to Photos preferences panel, but nothing helpful could be found there. Then the obvious hit me.

If like me you don’t want Photos to open on its own every time you connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac, there is a simple thing you can do.

Stop Photos from opening when you plug your iPhone in your computer

Step 1: In Photos, click on your plugged in device in the sidebar to select it. As you can see on the screenshot above, my iPhone 6s is the device plugged into my computer over USB.

Step 2: In the upper left corner of the screen, uncheck the box that says “Open Photos.”

If you have several iOS devices, you will have to repeat the process for each of them, but after that, Photos won’t open when you plug your device in your Mac. Obviously, if you want to revert the behavior, go back in the app and check the “Open Photos” checkbox.

Thank you for this tip. Apple’s Image Capture has been my app of choice opening to the Desktop and then launching Photoshop. The new Photos auto launch was an intrusion, something Apple seems to feel is OK these days. Appreciate your video to fix this.

LOVE THIS, Thanks Gary!

O-M-G. THANK YOU. For the longest time while driving if I put my earbud in incase I get a phone call (I use Google Hangouts and Skype apps for my phone) on my IPad songs just randomly start playing in my ear and I could NOT for the life of me figure out why or how to stop it!! I will bet my car that this is going to fix it as I have now turned it off to stop starting ITunes automatically–it’s been the most annoying thing–I even reported it to Apple as a bug!! 🙂

This just stops iTunes/Photos from launching on your Mac. It won’t stop songs from playing when you plug in your earphones. This can happen when something is wrong with the earphones, or the jack on your device making it think that you pressed the button on the cable when you have plugged it in. Try a different set of earphones. If it still happens, maybe a visit to the Genius Bar.
Note that many states have laws against wearing headphones while driving. You may want to check.

Thanks for the tip. I’m passing along my experience. Hopefully it will help someone else. I’m a photographer using Adobe products and not really interested in Photos. I use multiple memory cards. Formatted in the camera, they each get the same name. Should be easy to turn off, Right? However, my mac’s recognize each card individually. It was maddening.
This tip pointed me in the right direction, which was to insert each card individually and turn it off. Thanks again.

Yes, that’s right. Each card has a unique ID. The name isn’t what is used to determine which is which. If it was, then all sorts of other problems with various pieces of software and hardware would occur.

Jack, I’m also a Pro photographer with the exact same issue as you. But following Gary’s steps fails to stop Photos from launching each time I insert a card into the card reader (I also format my cards in camera).

Does this definitely work for you once you’ve re-formatted the card in your camera?

(Canon 5DMk3 with CF cards)

So far it has. Just to make clear: I inserted card and Photos opened. Highlighted card in sidebar. Unchecked open automatically box. Ejected card and closed Photos. Reinserted card and Photos did not open. Did this with all my cards individually and they all responded the same way. I haven’t had occasion to reformat any cards after shooting, so I’m not sure of the long-term results. I am optimistic.

Ah, that’s where it’ll go wrong I’m afraid. As soon as you format in camera your Mac won’t recognise the card as one it’s seen before. So it will open Photos as if it was a brand new card. Shucks, I thought we’d nailed it just then(!) Thanks for the reply though 🙂

So, instead of reformatting the card, just delete the photos and empty the card instead.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

With Photos for Mac, you can import your photographs from a variety of sources, including digital cameras, iOS devices, storage media, SD memory cards, iCloud Photo Streams and other apps.

By default, when you connect a camera, iOS device or other mobile device to your Mac, Photos’ hot-plug feature kicks in and automatically launches itself so you can start importing your photos from there.

Thankfully, there’s a setting to stop Photos from automatically opening when a specific device is connected to your computer. Additionally, other methods exist to stop the program from launching for all devices connected to your Mac.

In the tutorial, we’ll be explaining both methods so you can choose to selectively prevent specific or all devices from prompting Photos to open.

Stop the Photos app from launching using Photos

Step 1: Open Photos on your Mac.

Step 2: Click Import in the toolbar at the top of the Photos window.

Step 3: Connect a camera, your iPad, iPhone or other iOS device to the computer with a USB cable and make sure the device is turned on. If you’re connecting a digital camera, make sure it’s set to the correct mode for importing photos.

Step 4: Photos shall display the media on the device. To stop the app from auto-opening whenever you connect this device, untick the box next to “Open Photos for this device” at the top (you may need to click the Action button to reveal this option).

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Photos will no longer automatically open after connecting this particular device. This is a per-device specific setting so connecting any other device will still launch Photos. For example, preventing Photos from automatically opening after connecting an iPhone won’t stop it from launching when you connect an iPad to your Mac, and vice versa.

Stop the Photos app from launching using Image Capture

You can also use the Image Capture app to set Photos to open automatically whenever you connect your camera, an iOS device or any other imaging device to this Mac.

Step 1: Open Image Capture on your Mac.

Step 2: Connect a camera, your iPad, iPhone or other iOS device to this Mac with a USB cable and make sure it’s turned on. After a second or two, the imaging device shall appear in the Devices list in Image Capture’s lefthand column.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Step 3: Click the Show Hide button (it looks like a rectangle with an up arrow inside) located in the lower-left corner of the window to show a drop-down menu.

Step 4: Click the “Connecting this device opens” pop-up menu, and then choose No application. From that point on, connecting this particular device will no longer automatically launch Photos.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Tip: To automatically transfer images from the source device to your Mac upon connect it to the computer, select the AutoImporter option in the “Connecting this device opens” menu instead of No application.

Just like the previous method outlined above, this is a per-device setting so if you have multiple iOS devices you’ll have to repeat the process for each of them.

Method #3: Terminal

This last method ensures that Photos won’t auto-open for any device, as originally explained Michael Zhang in this Petapixel post.

Step 1: Open Terminal on your Mac.

Step 2: Enter the following line and press Enter:

defaults -currentHost write com.apple.ImageCapture disableHotPlug -bool YES

To enable Photos to launch automatically for all devices connected to this Mac, launch Terminal again and execute the following command:

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Windows 10 comes with the new companion app for helping users quickly transfer their entire photo library from iPhone, iPad or Android to the tablet or computer. However, every time I plug in my iPhone to my Surface Pro by the regular microUSB cable, it always try to import all the pictures promptly and copy of them into My Pictures. Is there any way to cancel the process when I plug my phone in?

By default the Photo App imports any images stored on the memory card or removable drive into your photo library in Windows 10 and 8. It is more annoying that the new screen opens and shows all my pictures from my iPhone. You could follow the single tutorial to customize AutoPlay defaults to resolve the problem.
How to stop photo app from importing photos in Windows 10
* From your desktop, click the Start button, typy in the autoplay settings into the Searching box, and select the top one from the results.
You can also access it by opening the Setting app, and going to the Devices > AutoPlay settings page.
* At the right side pane, under the Choose AutoPlay defaults option, there are different options for two type of external media, including the removable drive and a memory card.
* Now specify your preference of choice, like Take no action, instead of “Import photos and videos (photos)”. Once you have done that, there will not have any system level response and you need to manually open File Explorer to see the files on media device.

In Windows 8.1/8, you could do that by the method below:
* From Start screen, input AutoPlay in Search Charm bar, change to settings filter, and click it in the results.
* Within Control Panels, scroll down to the very bottom, you should see the Apple iPhone is under the devices with probably “Import pictures and videos using Windows” configuration, choose Take no action from the list, and click Save button to apply all changes.

OneDrive is one of the best cloud storage solutions available to regular users all over the world. One of the best things about it is that Microsoft also offers mobile apps that you can use on your smartphone or tablet to sync your files to the cloud and have them available everywhere. Fortunately, that also includes iPhones and iPads, devices on which you can install the OneDrive app. Among other features, the OneDrive app also lets you automatically back up all the photos and videos you take with your iPhone/iPad. However, you must first configure the OneDrive app to upload your photos and videos automatically, to the cloud. If you want to learn how to do that, read this guide:

Step 1. Launch the OneDrive app on your iPhone or iPad and open its Settings

Start by opening the OneDrive app on your iPhone or iPad. Then, tap on the Me icon found on the top-left corner of the screen.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

The previous action opens a menu with various settings and information. Tap the Settings entry.

Step 2. Find the Camera Upload settings from the OneDrive app

In the Settings list, tap Camera Upload. If you did not already configure the automatic upload of your iPhone/iPad photos to your OneDrive, it should say that it is Off.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Step 3. Upload the photos from your iPhone/iPad to your OneDrive

The OneDrive app now opens the screen called Camera Upload. On it, you should see the Camera Upload switch, which is turned Off by default, and the Camera upload account, which is the Microsoft account used to connect to the OneDrive cloud storage space.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

To enable the automatic upload of your photos, tap the Camera Upload switch to enable it.

When you do that, OneDrive asks if you want to “Turn on camera upload for this account.” Tap Confirm.

OneDrive wants you to confirm once more that you want to back up your entire camera roll to your OneDrive space. Tap Confirm again.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Note that the first time you do this, it could take a while for all your photos to be backed up, if you have many. That is why it is probably a good idea to keep your iPhone or iPad connected to a power source.

From now on, all the photos you take, as well as the ones you have already shot and are found on your iPhone or iPad, are automatically uploaded to your OneDrive cloud storage space. However, there are a few more settings that you can adjust so that the uploading goes just as you want it to: read the next section of this guide to see them.

Step 4. Set when and how OneDrive for iPhone/iPad uploads your photos and videos

In iOS, the OneDrive app uploads your photos only when your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi. However, you can also choose to “Use Mobile Network,” which means that the pictures uploads are also performed when you are using your mobile data plan.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

If you want to make sure that videos are also uploaded to your OneDrive, make sure that the “Include Videos” switch is On.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Because of the iOS limitations, the OneDrive app can only upload photos and videos if it is the active app. iOS automatically suspends OneDrive when it is not active and that means that it does not upload your photos in the background. However, it resumes uploading them when you reopen the app on your iPhone or iPad.

If you want it to be able to upload them all the time, regardless of whether the app is active or not, tap the “Upload In Background” switch and allow OneDrive to access your location.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

Back on the Camera Upload screen, if you scroll down, you can change a few settings about how OneDrive organizes your uploads and whether HEIC photos are uploaded as HEIC files or as JPEG files. OneDrive can organize your photos and videos by year or by month, so choose the method you like best. As for the HEIC photos, it is recommended that you upload them as they are, not change them into JPEGs. However, although HEIC pictures have better quality, JPEG files are better from a compatibility perspective.

How to stop iphoto from starting when you plug in an iphone ipad or memory card

So that is it: once you have finished configuring all the settings as you like, you can close the app and let it do its job of uploading your photos and videos to your OneDrive.

Do you use the OneDrive app to upload the photos and videos from your iPhone and iPad?

OneDrive is one of the best cloud services in the world and considering how many people use Windows on their devices but also own iPhones or iPads, it is a good thing that you can back up and sync photos and videos. If you have questions about using OneDrive on your iPhone or iPad, comment below.
