FaceTime is automatically activated when you set up your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If you don’t plan on using this feature, or if you don’t want your contacts to get in touch using FaceTime, you can simply turn it off.

Why Should You Turn Off FaceTime?

You might want to turn off or restrict FaceTime for privacy or security reasons. In early 2019, a huge Group FaceTime bug was discovered that let a caller listen in on your iPhone or iPad even before you picked up the call. That bug has now been fixed.

But if you’re still not sure about the security of your account, you can disable FaceTime altogether. Once you do this, you won’t be able to make or receive FaceTime calls.

How to Turn Off FaceTime on iPhone and iPad

One thing to be aware of is when you disable FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad, you will stop receiving notifications for video calls. But to the caller, it will look like you’re not answering.

To disable the feature, open your Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and find the “FaceTime” section.

On this screen, you’ll see all the details regarding your FaceTime account. If you want, you can disable one or multiple phone numbers or addresses where you can be reached. While you can disable email addresses associated with your account, you can’t disable your phone number.

For that, you’ll have to turn off FaceTime entirely. You can do this by tapping on the toggle next to “FaceTime.”

After launching FaceTime, go to the top menu bar and click “FaceTime.” From there, click on “Preferences.”

In the Preferences window that opens, uncheck the “Enable This Account” option.

Now that FaceTime is disabled, you can continue using your device without worrying about receiving FaceTime calls. If you still want to make free conference calls over the internet, you can use an alternative like Google Hangouts or Skype.

Click “Turn off Facetime”.

The more you know;)

The big downside to this is most people will probably turn off FaceTime and never turn it back on, even after the bug is fixed.

I like being able to call people with FaceTime audio, because the sound quality is far better than a cellular call. This may prove less reliable in the future.

This could cause a divorce!

A nasty bug which lets you hear and see someone at the end of a FaceTime call — without them answering — has been pretty concerning.

While Apple has said it will be rolling out a fix to the issue later this week, you’ll want to disable the feature for the time being.

This means you’ll need to switch FaceTime off on each Apple device you own. Turning it off on one device (even though you may be logged in to these devices with the same Apple ID) doesn’t automatically do the same for other devices.

Fortunately, it’s pretty simple to turn the feature off on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

How to turn off facetime on your iphone ipad and mac

Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad

Search for the FaceTime option, or scroll to the option, and select the icon

Switch the FaceTime toggle to off

Open the FaceTime application on your Mac

Select “FaceTime” in the menu bar

Then select “Turn FaceTime Off”

You can also choose to sign out of FaceTime completely on your Mac, as follows:

Open the FaceTime application on your Mac

Select “FaceTime” in the menu bar

Then select “Preferences”

You should be good to go from there – be wary of any FaceTime requests from unknown callers, of course.

This FaceTime isn’t about getting quality time in front of your boss; FaceTime is a video chat application developed by Apple. Apple developed it on an open standard, which means that technically (no pun intended), FaceTime can be used across a range of platforms, and other manufacturers can leverage FaceTime’s protocol. However, in reality, FaceTime remains available only to users of Apple products. Specifically, you can use FaceTime from your iPhone, iPad or Mac computer, and you’ll need to be contacting someone on one of these devices as well.

The app comes built-in to your device. Simply access it by going to Settings and looking for FaceTime on your phone or tablet. You’ll need to enter your Apple ID. For your Mac computer, launch the FaceTime app.

You can use FaceTime video (the standard way) which will show you and the person you’re speaking to on video. You can even do a group FaceTime call that way. There is also a FaceTime Audio setting which puts the call on audio mode only.

To make a FaceTime call, just open the app on your device and tap the "+" button on the FaceTime option and choose "Video" (or "Audio.")

To do a group FaceTime, open the FaceTime app and tap the "+" button at the top of the contacts list. In the "To" field, start to type the name or number of the first person you want to call. As you type, suggestions will come up. Only names in blue can be added (names appearing in gray mean that the contact has not upgraded to OS 12.1 and so can’t support group FaceTime.) To add another person, start typing their name or number also in the "To" field. Once you have all the people added, tap the "Video" or "Audio" button to start the call. Each person in the chat gets a notification about the call.

As we said before, FaceTime only works between callers who are in the Apple universe. You can’t place a FaceTime call to an Android user and Android users don’t have access to FaceTime. If you need to make a video call to an Android user, you’ll need to use a third-party app like WhatsApp or Skype.

Earlier today, a nasty FaceTime bug was uncovered that affects users of iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The bug allows someone to hear your audio on FaceTime, even if you don’t answer. If you want to protect yourself as best you can, here’s how to turn off FaceTime entirely.

Of note, disabling FaceTime on one device does not seem to disable it on all of your devices. So, if you have an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you’ll have to follow these steps on each device. If you do so on your iPhone, it does disable FaceTime on your Apple Watch completely.

How to turn off FaceTime on iPhone or iPad

To disable the feature on your iPhone and iPad, do the following:

  1. Open the Settings application
  2. Scroll down and look for the FaceTime icon
  3. Switch the toggle to gray

How to disable FaceTime on your Mac

To disable Face on your Mac, following the below steps:

  1. Open the FaceTime app on your Mac
  2. Click “FaceTime” in the Menu bar
  3. Click “Turn off FaceTime”

We first reported on this bug earlier today. Essentially, if someone uses FaceTime to call you and you don’t answer, they can hear what you are saying anyway by following the correct steps. Further, they can even receive video if you press the power button your device.

In a statement, Apple says that it is aware of the bug and will release an update to fix it “later this week.” In the interim, the best way to protect yourself is to disable FaceTime completely on all of your devices using the aforementioned steps.

FaceTime is one of the most popularly used apps on smartphones today, because it allows you to connect with friends, family, colleagues, and more – all over the Internet, for free! If you have an Apple device, making use of FaceTime is a must, so in this article, we’re going to explain everything you need to know about it, including how it works, how private it is, what it may cost you if you aren’t careful, and more.

So, what exactly is FaceTime?

FaceTime is a video calling app made by Apple that comes with iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The service allows users to call and video chat with their friends and family who also have an Apple device. The service runs using your device’s Internet data or Wi-Fi connection, and is simple and easy to use.

How does FaceTime work?

FaceTime works using your Apple device’s mobile data or a Wi-Fi connection to allow you to make voice and/or video calls to your contacts who also have an Apple device. Just open the app, select the type of call you’d like to make, and type in the name or phone number of the person you’d like to call.

How to turn off facetime on your iphone ipad and mac

Check out this tutorial on how to use FaceTime to learn about how to connect with your contacts in more detail.

Is FaceTime free?

Yes, FaceTime is free to use. It comes automatically installed on iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. You can use it to call your friends and family who also have Apple devices, for free. We would recommend connecting your device to a Wi-Fi network (if possible) before making calls to avoid any data charges. If you need more information to understand how that works, and how you could possibly be charged for your calls, read our article about FaceTime data usage to learn more.

Is FaceTime private?

FaceTime is very private. When you’re calling someone using the app, the only people that can join the conversation are you and the person you’re calling. The calls are also encrypted, meaning that they are safe, private, and cannot be tapped into. You don’t have to worry about anyone listening in on your calls.

Pros and cons of FaceTime

Some awesome things about the service are that:

  • It’s free and easy to use
  • It comes built into Apple devices
  • It allows for both voice and video calls
  • It’s convenient that you don’t have to have cell phone service to use it, as long as you have Wi-Fi or an Internet connection available.

On the other hand:

  • It’s only available on Apple devices
  • It can’t be used to call landline phones
  • It does not offer group/conference calling features

FaceTime alternatives

If you don’t enjoy FaceTime or don’t have an Apple device, there are other apps that you can use instead. One great alternative is Skype. Skype has more features, is free to download and use, and is available for iPhone, Android, PC and Mac. Another app you can use instead is ooVoo. ooVoo is a pretty popular calling app as well, and like Skype, also has more features. To learn about these apps and more, check out this article where we break down other similar apps and services.

We hoped you learned something new in this introductory article, but there’s plenty more to come. Be sure to read the rest of the articles in our FaceTime course to learn more. If you have any questions, leave us a comment below.

If you value your privacy, you should seriously consider turning off FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad. As detailed, a serious FaceTime bug allows an incoming caller to hear your even if you don’t pick up the call. Worse, they can even gain access to your video feed.

Apple has already acknowledged this serious issue and confirmed that it will roll out a software update in a few days to fix it. Given how serious the bug is, I expect Apple to roll out an update within the next 24-36 hours. However, even until then, having FaceTime enabled on your iPhone or iPad poses a serious privacy risk.

This is why you should consider disabling it until Apple gets around to rolling out the software update with the recommended fix.

Apple does seem to have temporarily disabled FaceTime due to the serious privacy risk it poses, though that should not stop you from turning off the service on your device as well.

Create a link to a FaceTime call

You can’t create a FaceTime link with Windows or a non-Apple device, but you can join a FaceTime call if someone shares a link with you.

Spatial Audio in FaceTime

Spatial Audio in FaceTime makes it sound like your friends and family are in the room with you. Their voices are spread out and sound like they’re coming from the direction in which each person is positioned on the screen, helping conversations flow more naturally.

Spatial Audio is supported on iPhone 7 Plus and later, with the exception of iPhone SE (1st generation).

Filter background sounds

When you want your voice to be heard clearly in a FaceTime call and other sounds to be blocked out, you can turn on Voice Isolation. Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice in a FaceTime call and blocks out the ambient noise.

  1. During a FaceTime call, open Control Center, then tap Mic Mode.
  2. Select Voice Isolation.

When you want your voice and all the sounds around you to be heard in a FaceTime call, you can turn on Wide Spectrum to leave ambient noises unfiltered.

  1. During a FaceTime call, open Control Center, then tap Mic Mode.
  2. Select Wide Spectrum.

Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum are supported on iPhone 7 Plus and later, with the exception of iPhone SE (1st generation).

Blur the background with Portrait mode

With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, you can turn on Portrait mode to automatically blur the background and put the visual focus on you, the same way Portrait mode does in the Camera app.

  1. When you’re on a FaceTime call, tap your picture-in-picture tile.
  2. Tap the Portrait mode button in the top left of your personal video tile.

To turn Portrait mode off, tap the Portrait mode button again.

Portrait mode in FaceTime is supported on iPhone XS Max or later, iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad mini (5th generation), and iPad Pro (3rd generation) and later.

1. You can use FaceTime on any of these devices on Wi-Fi: iPhone 4 or later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad 2 or later, iPad mini (all models), and iPod touch 4th generation or later (only iPod touch 5th generation or later support FaceTime audio calling).

2. With a cellular data plan, you can also use FaceTime without Wi-Fi on any of these devices: iPhone 4s or later, iPad Pro (all models), and iPad (3rd generation or later).

3. When you tap a person’s contact information, FaceTime tries to connect using any FaceTime-enabled numbers or addresses that you have stored for that person. To avoid placing calls to unintended recipients, make sure that your contacts are accurate and don’t contain old or unused information.

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has pulled down the group FaceTime feature from iPhone , iPad , and Mac devices after a bug was revealed. Due to the bug, Apple users were able to hear others’ conversation even before the call was answered. Even though Apple, on its part has disabled the feature, you can completely be safe by turning off FaceTime entirely. Readers must note, that they will have to disable it on all Apple products they have — iPhone, iPad or Mac — as turning it off on one product, doesn’t ensure that it is disabled on all.

How to turn off FaceTime on iPhone or iPad

Open Settings app

Tap on FaceTime icon

Turn off the toggle to Gray

Open the FaceTime app on your Mac

Click “FaceTime” in the Menu bar

Click “Turn off FaceTime”

For now, Apple has disabled the flaw remotely. The company’s system status page shows that the Group FaceTime feature is temporarily unavailable. Hence, users are not able to add other iPhone users to make a Group FaceTime call. Even if you try it right now, you won’t be able to add a person to a one-to-one FaceTime call. Apple is expected to fix this issue soon.

It is being said that this bug will be affecting all the iPhone models that are running iOS 12.1 or later OS versions. Also, this feature was launched by Apple three months ago so it is not for sure since when has this bug been existing.

Apple has confirmed the Group FaceTime bug and has said in a statement to Buzzfeed that the company is “aware of this issue and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week.”

Apple’s Group FaceTime was the company’s one of the most touted features of iOS 12.1. The service was also one of the most anticipated ones.
