If you have AirPods Pro, you can now turn on Spatial Audio for a “theater-like surround-sound experience.” Your iPhone or iPad will track the movement of your head and device to deliver more immersive sound.

What You’ll Need

This feature does require AirPods Pro—it doesn’t work with standard AirPods or any Beats headphones, although it may work with future models.

Spatial Audio works with the iPhone 7 and later. For iPad, you’ll need at least an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad (6th generation), or iPad Mini (5th generation), or a later device.

On a supported device, you must update to at least iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, which is when Apple introduced the feature

Finally, you’ll also need “audiovisual content from a supported app”—it doesn’t work in all apps and with all videos. The content you’re watching must have at least 5.1 surround sound to work. With standard stereo sound, you won’t notice any difference.

How to Turn On Spatial Audio (or Turn It Off)

First, take your AirPods Pro out of their case and place them in your ears.

On your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > Bluetooth. Tap the “i” button to the right of the AirPods device.

Scroll down on this page and look for the “Spatial Audio” option. (If you don’t see it, you may need to update your AirPods’ firmware.)

To enable Spatial Audio, ensure the “Spatial Audio” option here is enabled—the switch to its right will be green. If it isn’t, tap the switch to turn it on.

To test Spatial Audio, tap the “See & Hear How It Works” option.

How to Quickly Toggle Spatial Audio On and Off

To quickly turn Spatial Audio on and off, you can also use the Control Center. Open it by swiping down from the top right corner of your iPhone or iPad’s display.

Long-press the volume control that has a small picture of your AirPods to access their options.

How to Test Spatial Audio

At the release of the Spatial Audio feature with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 in September 2020, Apple TV+, Disney+, and HBO Max support the spatial audio feature. Other apps and services will likely add support for it in the near future, too.

To test it out, here’s a Dolby Atmos demonstration video. Play it on your iPhone or iPad with Spatial Audio enabled and you’ll hear how the virtual surround sound works.

Technology is a daily constant in our lives. As such it is also evolving at a rapid pace, enabling humans to experience life in different ways. This is also the case with audio technology. Immersive sound technology which was once used only in the realm of cinema and theatre has now crept into our daily lives. Advanced audio formats have now become a staple of both music and movie streaming services.

The latest pioneer in the world of sound is Apple with its latest addition to an already burgeoning market, that is, Spatial Audio. Here’s everything you need to enable Spatial Audio for your Airpods on iOS 15 on your iPhone and how to use it.

But before we delve into the details of how to use this feature, let’s understand what it is and how different it is from previous audio technologies.

    • What is Spatial Audio?

    • Spacial Audio FAQs:

    What is Spatial Audio?

Spatial audio is broadly used to describe a variety of audio technologies that aims for an immersive audio experience. It makes the user feel as if the audio has various sources within a particular environment, instead of the typical left and right audio channels that are currently the standard.

Even surround sound systems give you a horizontal experience, where the left and right audio channels deliver sound independently. Spatial audio, however, will do the same while also making it appear that sound is coming from above too.

For instance, the sound of a plane traveling in a game or a movie will come from above your head just like it does in real life.

Music becomes even more transcendental and entertaining as you will hear instruments from all around you, just like you would in a live music performance.

But different spatial sound systems come with different experiences because there are many standards of spatial audio out there. To name a few; some of the most popular in the market are Dolby Atmos, Sony 360 Reality Audio, Apple Spatial Audio, and DTS:X.

    Spacial Audio FAQs:

    Spatial Audio Requirements:
    • AirPods Pro or AirPods Max updated to the latest firmware version.
    • iPhone 7 or later or these iPad models: iPad Pro (11 and 12.9 inches) and later, iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad (6th gen) and later, iPad mini (5th gen), iOS or iPadOS 14 or later.
    • Audiovisual content from supported applications and streaming services.
    How does Spatial Audio work?

Apple’s latest iOS update has brought the movie-theater experience to your very own pockets.

According to Apple, the Spatial audio feature is achieved by applying directional audio filters and adjusting the frequency of sound each ear receives. This creates a spatial experience wherein sound is received virtually from anywhere in space.

It also uses the accelerometer and gyroscope on your phone and AirPods to get movement input of your head and the device. Spatial Audio software then compares this data to remap the sound field to create and retain the special effect even with your head moving in different directions.

Also called Dynamic head tracking, this latest iPhone feature of spatial audio renders a 360 degree sound experience.

What’s the difference between Stereo and Spatial audio?

Stereo audio essentially is when sound or audio is recorded through two distinct channels simultaneously. Signals from two microphones are used, one of them is assigned to the left channel and the other is assigned to the right. The stereo effect is then produced by the slightest variation in sound between both these channels. To achieve this, microphones are put in place at different levels and times with only minor differences, but good enough to create a nice experience utilizing the differential depth and space.

Spatial audio, however, is a technique that combines sounds where the audio engineer has to first decide the x, y, and z coordinates of the listener as well as the direction they are facing. Hence, instead of sound coming from a dual-channel, as it does with stereo audio, spatial audio sounds appear as if they come from all directions.

This is why it is quite rapidly becoming the norm for audio standards, with many different audio tech companies trying to provide the best experience they can to users.

What applications does Spatial Audio work on?

All applications like YouTube, Spotify, Apple TV, Netflix, etc.

Can you turn off dynamic head tracking for audio content and use it for video only?

Yes, you can do this by going to Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > Head tracking.

Can’t use dynamic head tracking: how to fix the issue

Try resetting and updating your AirPods, and it might work.

Do I need to update my AirPod Pros too?

Yes, You need to update your iPhone and your AirPods Pro or Max to the latest firmware in order for Spatial Audio to run smoothly.

What is the current firmware version of your Airpods for it to work?

3E751 is the current firmware version you need to experience Spatial Audio.

How to turn on spatial audio for airpods on iphone or ipad

(Pocket-lint) – Apple’s Spatial Audio was introduced with iOS 14 in September 2020 and has evolved a fair amount over time.

It is Apple’s answer to Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio, creating a virtual 3D surround sound effect in a stereo pair of headphones. It virtualises an audio mix that surrounds you, making it seem you are in the heart of the action.

Uniquely though, it also uses tracking hardware in Apple devices, including the AirPods (3rd Generation), AirPods Pro and AirPods Max headphones, to track your head in real-time along with the position of an iPad or iPhone. This enables it to place the audio effect realistically depending on where you look or turn.

Here’s how it works, what devices it is available on, how you turn it on and off and everything else you need to know.

    How does Spatial Audio work?

Spatial Audio enables you to hear three-dimensional audio from supported videos that follow the movement of your iPhone or iPad.

It effectively recreates a cinema-style experience, where sounds appear to be coming from all around you – front, behind, from the side, even above your head. In order to do this, Spatial Audio uses the 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes from a compatible film or video, applies directional audio filters and adjusts the frequencies relayed to each ear.

Where Spatial Audio differs to other similar technologies like Dolby Atmos for Headphones is in its tracking. The accelerometers and gyroscopes within AirPods Max, AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) are used to track your head and position the sound accordingly. It also tracks your iPhone or iPad, so the sound you hear is also relative to the screen you are watching on.

As a result, when Spatial Audio is turned on and you’re watching a supported film or video, if you turn your head or move your device, the dialogue you hear remains with the actor or action on the screen.

How about Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos?

As well as Spatial Audio for movies and TV shows, Apple now offers Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos music tracks on Apple Music.

These have been remixed to include multiple channels around and above you, to give the impression that you are sitting in the middle of a recording studio or live concert. As with movies, it gives the impression of channels through regular stereo headphones, although in this case requires dedicated Dolby Atmos music mixes.

There are thousands of songs available in Spatial Audio. When played through headphones, listeners hear music coming from all around them. We’re hoping it will also eventually extend to Dolby Atmos systems and soundbars, such as the Sonos Arc. However, it doesn’t seem to be supported at present.

In terms of what headphones are compatible, all Apple and Beats headphones with the H1 or W1 chip support the new surround mixes when played through an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV. However, so too do any decent headphones.

Third-party headphones won’t switch Dolby Atmos support on and off automatically though, just Apple’s. To listen on your separate headphones you need to head to Settings > Music > Dolby Atmos and switch it to “Always On”. This only works with Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos – regular movie and TV Spatial Audio is still an Apple device exclusive.

You can also hear it coming through the internal speakers of an iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro or HomePod, although it defeats the object somewhat to listen to Dolby Atmos audio through an iPhone’s stereo speakers. An Apple TV 4K will also play Dolby Atmos through a compatible TV or AV receiver (as with supported movies).

Android devices will get Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos through the Apple Music app soon.

    How to get Spatial Audio

There’s a couple of things you’ll need to experience Spatial Audio. Firstly, you’ll need the AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, AirPods (3rd Generation) or latest Beats headphones.

You’ll then need an iPhone 7 or later or the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen) or later, iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Air (3rd gen) and later, iPad (6th gen) and later, iPad mini (5th gen and later).

You’ll also need iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later and AV content from a supported app. If an app supports 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos then it will work with Spatial Audio.

Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on Apple Music works automatically, although you will need to switch it to “Always On” in Settings > Music > Dolby Atmos if you use third-party headphones.

How do you turn Spatial Audio on or off?

To turn Spatial Audio on, follow the steps below.

    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on Bluetooth
    3. Find your AirPods (3rd Generation), AirPods Pro or AirPods Max
    4. Tap on the “i” next to your headphones

      • AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
      • BeatsX, Beats Solo3 Wireless, Beats Studio3, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Beats Flex, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro.
      • HomePod speakers that are set up as the default speakers.
      • A Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar, Dolby Atmos-enabled AV Receiver, or television that supports Dolby Atmos audio.

Dolby Atmos badge on the Now Playing screen lets you know which songs support this. And if all songs of an album support Dolby Atmos, a badge is shown on the album’s details page.

You can also search for spatial audio in the Music app to see the results. Currently, over a thousand songs support this. More will be added regularly.

If you’ve downloaded Disney+ through the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and other Apple devices, then you will be pleased to know that you can take your viewing experience to a whole new level.

How, you ask? Well, all you need to do is pair your AirPods Max or AirPods Pro to your Apple device and turn on spatial audio.

Spatial audio allows you to experience an immersive theatre-like surround sound and provides dynamic head tracking when you’re watching a movie or a TV show. Simply put, when watching and listening, it will seem like the sound is coming from all around you.

If you turn your head or move away from your device, the audio will remain fixed to the screen. The spatial audio function will make it sound like the audio is coming from behind, on the left or on the right of you depending on where you move when away from the device. This gives viewers a new experience when watching action films and TV shows like Avengers: Endgame and The Mandalorian where it sounds like the action is happening in real life around you. Mulan, Onward and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are also worth a look.

Of course, with the AirPods Max or AirPods Pro, viewers can also enjoy being one with their desired movie or TV show with the noise-cancelling function that removes noise and reduces unwanted ambient sounds.

For a more social viewing with the family and friends, customers can also enjoy select Disney+ titles with 4K and Dolby Atmos in the living room with the Apple TV 4K device and the Apple TV app.

Disney+ is available on Apple TV on launch day as with a few other smart TVs.
