If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already seen the impact that an animated wallpaper can make and you decided you want one for your screen. There is a certain elegance to the well-chosen, high-res static wallpaper, but it can’t quite keep up with its animated counterpart.
Windows doesn’t natively support the use of GIFs as wallpapers, but there are some workarounds to this. Keep reading to find out how to use a GIF as your Windows wallpaper. We’ll also cover some other ways to use looped animations as your wallpaper that don’t involve GIFs.
Using a GIF as Your Wallpaper
As stated above, Windows won’t recognize GIFs as viable options for use as wallpapers. It’s not entirely clear why Microsoft has always insisted on stifling this feature but never fear, there are third-party options to help with that. The best option by far is a beautiful piece of software called Plastuer. It has too many features to cover here, as it can do so much more than set GIFs as your wallpaper.
Plastuer doesn’t require installation, all you have to do is download it and launch it. Once you run it, the program will detect your monitors and let you select the one to work with. Once you’ve selected it, you can search for a GIF using a URL or select a file from your computer. You can also create playlists with several URLs that will loop in the order you choose. Once you’ve selected the GIF, click Save to finish the setup.
By default, Plastuer will run on startup, so you just need to set it and forget it. It’s a very lightweight program and it will automatically detect frame settings to conserve RAM. Keep exploring Plastuer and you’ll find a treasure trove of features that you didn’t even know you wanted. You can even set webpages as your wallpaper. Best of all, it’s available on a ‘pay what you want’ model, so if you’re not in a position to spend on it, you can get it for free.
If you’re not married to the idea of using a GIF, you’ll avail yourself to a whole new world of animated wallpapers. What you’re likely after is a looped animation. The best — or, at least, the most popular — tool out there for animated wallpapers is Wallpaper Engine.
This software is available through Steam, so you’ll need a free account and the Steam client to download it. The price will oscillate depending on periodic discounts, and it shouldn’t be over $5. It’s great value for the money as it comes packed with features. Once you download it, all you have to do is launch it and select one of the wallpapers available in the gallery. The animation will be set as your wallpaper.
If you have a specific animation in mind, you can upload it to the engine. Wallpaper engine supports GIFs as well as MP4, WEBM, WMV, AVI, MKV, MV4, and MOV files. You can also use the built-in editor to create your own animations. It lets you upload static images and add animations such as fog, snow, and the like. It also has performance options to minimize the burden it places on your computer.
Maybe the best feature is that it’s fully integrated with the Steam community. Steam users can upload their own creations which you can access. Not only do you get to set your own animations, but you’ll also be able to choose from thousands of ready-made wallpapers from the workshop.
If you’re not a fan of using the Steam client, you have another option in Stardock’s DeskScapes. It’s a little pricier than Wallpaper Engine but it has a few useful features which set it apart. It offers a 30-day free trial, so you can try it before you commit.
Download and install the software, then follow these steps:
- Launch the program and switch over to the Online tab.
- Choose the wallpaper you want from the gallery and click on “Download this background.”
- Once it’s downloaded, click on “Apply to my desktop” to complete the setup.
The list on the left-hand side will give you access to the various galleries grouped into broad themes. There is also a massive gallery of still images that you can use. The animations in DeskScapes are all in MP4 format, which doesn’t make much of a difference, aesthetically, from GIFs.
Animate Your Life
This doesn’t cover all of the options that are available but you probably don’t need to look much further. These three tools will offer a full range of price points and features. Don’t restrict yourself to GIFs unless there is a GIF you absolutely must have as your wallpaper. You’ll have much better results and better options using MP4 and other, more recent, animated files.
Share your favorite of these programs in the comments. If you had to commit to one wallpaper across all your devices for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Three easy steps. That’s all it takes to transform your videos into GIFs. The entire process can easily be done in just a few clicks.
Anatomy of a GIF
GIFs are short clips, ten-seconds or less, with no audio. GIFs play automatically on a loop. The files load quickly and can work across various platforms. The lightweight file size makes GIFs hassle-free to share, upload or embed in a website or email.
Most GIFs are created using videos or simple animations. Anyone with the Screencast-O-Matic Video Editor has the power to customize and convert any video into a GIF.
Creative Ways to Use GIFs
GIFs can be a quick way to enhance professional projects, create workflow instructions, build marketing campaigns, and improve social media posts. You can also send fun quirky GIFs to get your point across.
Here are several creative suggestions on how to use a GIF:
Use GIFs to save time during office meetings. Instead of showing time-consuming videos during presentations, shorten the video down to the highlights. Incorporate the shorter GIF version into the meeting. Send a followup email and link to the full-length video.
Screencasts are a popular tool among professionals creating online tutorials. If your tutorial is simple, consider converting your video file into a GIF.
Enhance your video in the Screencast-O-Matic Video Editor by adding text, shape overlays or images. Shape overlays are especially helpful in quick tutorials for pointing out important buttons or features in a recording.
Embed GIFs into your next marketing email. The animation from a GIF stands out, drawing viewers to important information. Looping GIFs bring extra value to emails to make sure important information stands out.
Social Media Content
GIFs are a great strategy for social media campaigns. The fact that GIFs play automatically is social media gold. You no longer need to count on audiences opting to play your content.

I recently wrote about Twitter’s super now app called Vine, which lets people create 6 second video clips that can be embedded in a tweet.
Those videos have their own proprietary extension, but if you want to turn those 6 second videos into an animated GIF, you can now do so thanks to developer Esten Hurtle, who created VineGifR, a seamless way to transform your (or someone else’s) Vine movies into GIFs.
How to Create Vine GIFs with VineGifR
Once you’ve downloaded the program in the link above (for Mac users only), you can turn any Vine movie into a GIF by copy/pasting the Vine’s URL and entering it into the text field in VineGifR. Let’s use this link as an example.
Click on GIF’it and let the program do its thing, which should only take a few seconds. When it’s complete, it will ask you where you wish to save the new GIF file.
That’s it. Now you have a GIF that you can post anywhere GIFs are accepted. However, this is currently an unsigned Mac app, so here’s an alternative method for those who are a bit suspicious of the unsigned.
How to Create Vine GIFs
If you know the URL of the Vine in question, just go to it in your web browser. You can browse some of the latest Vine vids on the official Vine Twitter page, or just search for #vine.co on Twitter to see what everyone’s sharing. You can also check out Just Vined to see the last 20 videos posted.
Oddly enough, there doesn’t seem to be a way to share (or find a URL) for anyone else’s video from within the Vine app itself. What’s up with that?
- Saving the MP4 in Chrome
Once you have the URL loaded in Chrome, right-click and go to Save Video As. .
From here, you can save the video to your desktop or anywhere on your computer as an .mp4 file.
- Saving the MP4 in Firefox
If you’re using Firefox, it’s not as easy as right-clicking, but it’s still pretty easy. When on your chosen Vine URL in Firefox, just go Tools -> Web Developer -> Page Source, or you can just right-click anywhere outside of the actual playing video and select View Page Source.
Now, look for the URL ending in .mp4 and copy it.
Now enter that URL into a new tab and go to File -> Save As. and choose your download location.
And now that you know how to save the .mp4s in Chrome and Firefox, it’s time to convert them.
How to Convert the Vine MP4 into a GIF
If you have a program like Photoshop, you can easily import the .mp4 file and convert it into a .gif file. Instead of explaining it all, this video guide should do the trick.
If you don’t already have Photoshop or a similar program on your computer, you can do a simple Google search to find some good free programs that can. Zamzar is an obvious one that comes to mind, where you just upload the video to their site for them to convert, then they email you the finished product.
Now, you can turn any Vine movie into a GIF anytime you want.

Apple’s cool Live Photo feature lets your still photos come to life! Press down on any live photo and watch the brief moment just before and just after the ‘key frame.’ Yes, they’re cool and fun, but they’re still just photos and can’t be directly turned into a GIF.
In this super quick tutorial, I’ll show you how to turn your Live Photo into a GIF in a few easy steps.
- Pick a Live Photo
- Record your screen while viewing Live Photo
- Upload recording to Kapwing & export
1. Pick a Live Photo
For this example, I’m going to use this picture of the beach I took a while ago. Make sure you know how to view the full the full segment of the live photo. Here’s my key photo from my camera roll on the left, and the full Live Photo segment on the right:
2. Record Your Screen While Viewing Live Photo
Make sure you have the screen recording widget inside of your Control Center. Head to your Live Photo and screen record while holding down on the screen to view the whole photo. Stop recording, and find the video in your Photos. Though you could pause here and send the video to your computer, I’m going to do the whole thing on my phone to show you how easy Kapwing makes it.
3. Upload Recording to Kapwing & Export
Open up the Kapwing Studio and upload your video. Once your video is in, you’ll need to make little edits like cropping the top and bottom out and trimming the video to only be of the full live photo. Make these by clicking on the video and tapping ‘edit video’ to get into the editing panel. You’ll notice Kapwing also has wide editing capabilities from erasing backgrounds to overlaying gifs, take some time to explore the power of the studio if you haven’t before.
Once you’re done with the editing portion, we’re ready to export! Find the settings tap on the top right (you’ll need to scroll to get there if you’re on a phone), and make sure the recording is going to export as a GIF (or export it as an MP4 from the same screen). Here’s what my editing process looked like along with the final product on the right:
You’re done! You’ve successfully used Kapwing to edit and export your Live Photo as a GIF.
