Word can automatically create a backup of your document every time you save it. However, you can also have Word automatically save your document for you at regular intervals using the AutoRecover feature and use this feature to recover any changes lost in your documents.

Turn on the AutoRecover feature

To turn on the AutoRecover feature, click the “File” tab.

On the backstage screen, click “Options” in the list of items on the left.

Click the “Save AutoRecover Information every” check box so there is a check mark in the box. The spinner edit box before “minutes” activates. Enter the number of minutes after which you want Word to automatically save your document.

To change the default location for AutoRecover files, click “Browse” to the right of the “AutoRecover file location” edit box.

On the “Modify Location” dialog box, navigate to the location where you want AutoRecover files saved and click “OK”.

To close the “Word Options” dialog box, click “OK”.

Once Word has automatically saved your document, on the “Info” screen, under “Versions”, you’ll see a list of “autosave” versions of your document that have been automatically saved at the time interval you specified.

NOTE: The previous “autosave” files are still available even after you manually save your document within the same Word session. However, once you close the document and reopen it, any “autosave” files associated with the document are not available.

Recover Changes Made to an Existing Document

To recover the latest changes you forgot to save in a document that has previously been saved, open the file in question and click the “File” tab. On the “Info” screen, the “Versions” section contains a list of files that were either closed without saving or automatically saved using the AutoRecover feature.

The unsaved version of the file opens in Read-Only mode with a message in a yellow bar at the top of the window saying this is a temporary, recovered file. To fully recover this version of the file, click “Restore” on the yellow bar.

A warning displays telling you that you are about to overwrite the last saved version of your file with the selected version. If you’re sure you want the recovered version of the file to replace the latest saved version, click “OK”.

After restoring the selected version of the document, Word remains in Read-Only mode. To return to normal editing mode, select “Edit Document” from the “View” menu.

Recover a New Document You Have Not Saved Yet

It’s one thing to be able to recover a few changes made to an existing document that you lost. What if you created a new document, added a lot of content, and Word crashed or you lost power before you remembered to save the document? There is a way to recover unsaved documents.

To recover an unsaved document, click the “File” tab from within another existing document or a blank document and then click “Open” in the list of items on the left side of the backstage screen.

NOTE: If you’ve opened Word without opening a document or creating a new document, press “Ctrl + O” (that’a a capital letter “O”, not a zero) from the initial screen with the “Recent” list of documents and the templates. The “Open” dialog box opens to the “UnsavedFiles” folder, listing any unsaved documents that are available to recover. Select a file and click “Open”.

NOTE: These recovery files are named with a string of numbers, so it may be hard to figure out which one is the document you want to recover. Looking at the date and time on each file might help you determine which file you want.

If you are part-way through working on a document when due to circumstances outside your control (such as the computer crashing or a network problem), you are unable to continue, there is a danger that the changes you have made will have been lost. Shown below this is the AutoRecover file location which in this example is “N:\” – ie the individual N:drive for the user. These are the standard settings for users on IT Services computers. They mean that every 10 minutes, a copy of the work in progress will be automatically saved to the user’s N:drive.

If Word is closed normally these auto recovery files are not saved.

If the computer you are using crashes while you are working on a document, you will probably have lost some information, but you should be able to recover the last saved autoversion. In this example, that means that at most you will have lost 10 minutes worth of work.

There are two ways to recover information. Firstly, if you are at the same computer you were using when the problem occurred and nobody else has used it in the meantime, then once you have been able to restart or log back on to the computer, open Word again. When you open it, Word will automatically check for any auto-saved files on the left-hand side of the screen. You can then click through them and choose any that you want to keep, using “Save As” to save a copy of the file.

If you are not using the same computer, then you have to go to the file location where Word auto-saved the file. So in the example above, this would mean going to the “N:” drive.

  1. Click on Windows Explorer icon on the task bar
  2. Locate the”N:” drive
  3. Any automatically saved files will then be listed as .asd files

Automatic versions of files do not end with “.docx” or “.doc” like normal Word documents – they end with “.asd” which stands for “auto-saved document”. The file name will be the same as the name of the file you were working on but with “AutoRecovery save of” at the start. So if the file you were working on was called “My New Word File.docx”, then the last auto-saved version would be called “AutoRecovery of My New Word File.asd”. You can open it simply by double-clicking on it – the file will open in Word as usual and you can then use “Save As” to save it to the right location.

If no file is found you need to find the Autosave file and copy it to the location shown when Recover is used.

These can be found via File, Open and clicking the Recover Unsaved Documents button found at the very bottom of the Recent File List.

  1. Open Word and select File, Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box select Save from the left hand menu.
  3. Note the AutoRecover files location.
  4. Open Windows Explorer/My Computer
  5. Click on the Organise dropdown.
  6. Select Folder and Search Options.
  7. Select the View tab.
  8. Remove the tick next to Hide Extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Select the Show hidden files, folders and drives radio button.
  11. Move to the location found in step 3 above.
  12. Open the folder which has your document name (with %20 representing spaces).
  13. Copy the .asd file.
  14. Return to Word and click on File, Open
  15. Scroll down until you can see the Recover Unsaved Documents button and click it.
  16. Paste the copied file into the folder
  17. Open the file

Microsoft Word allows you to make an automatic backup of your working document. If the program crashes or your computer accidentally loses power, the AutoRecover feature will attempt to load the most up-to-date version of your document.

Enabling and using AutoRecover

To turn on the AutoRecover feature:

    In Word 2010, from the File menu, select Options . Then, from the toolbar on the left, click Save to configure AutoRecover options. Proceed to step 3 below.

In Word 2007, from the Office Button menu, select Word Options . Then, from the toolbar on the left, click Save to configure AutoRecover options.

In Word 2003, from the Tools menu, select Options. .

  • In the window that opens, click the Save tab, icon, or list item.
  • If it is unchecked, check Save AutoRecover info every: , and type a value next to “minutes”. For example, to save your work every five minutes, type 5 .
  • Click OK to make the change.
  • If a system or program crash causes your computer to shut down, reboot and open Word normally. Word should recognize that there is an AutoRecovered file that is newer than the last saved version of your document. It will prompt you to open and save the AutoRecovered file.

    If the AutoRecover function does not prompt you to open the backup file, you may still be able to recover your work. Search your hard drive for a file called AutoRecovery or *.asd .     Finding AutoRecovered files in Windows

    Note: The folders containing the AutoRecovered files may not be visible. To make them visible, see ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I view hidden files?

    Word for Windows saves AutoRecovered files with the name AutoRecovery Save of filename.asd , where filename is the name of the document on which you were working:

    • In Windows 7 and Vista , the file is stored in the \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word folder ( username will be replaced by the author’s username).
    • In Windows XP , the file is stored in the \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word folder ( username will be replaced by the author’s username).

    When you find the file, double-click to open it. Alternatively, from Word’s File menu, choose Open. and browse to the location of the file.

    Finding AutoRecovered files in Mac OS X

    Word for Mac OS X saves the AutoRecovered file as AutoRecover save of filename , where filename is the name of the document on which you were working. The default AutoRecover location is:

    Replace username with the short name of your account in Mac OS X, Office version with the version of Office you have, and filename with the name of the document. If it’s not there, try searching for it with Spotlight, which you can access from the magnifying glass icon in the top right of the Finder menu bar. Once you find the file, drag it to the Desktop. Double-click it, or, from Word’s File menu, choose Open. to browse to and open the file.

    Changing the default AutoRecover folder

    To change the folder in which AutoRecovered files are stored:

    Word 2010 and 2007

    1. In Word 2010, from the File menu, choose Options .

    In Word 2007, from the Office Button menu, select Word Options .

  • From the toolbar on the left, click Save , which will present you with options to customize how documents are saved.

    Based on your description, “When I restarted the word document said the last edited date was Jan 11th but I was literally working on it before I restarted”, may I take it that your changes between Jan 11 th till restarting PC have disappeared?

    If so, we sincerely suggest that you can check the Version History to try to retrieve previous versions according to What is AutoSave?.

    Finally, the last way to restore your document that we would suggest that you can try to check OneDrive to check whether the data has been saved and synced, which you can Restore OneDrive to try to restore the files based on this official article Restore your OneDrive.

    Additionally, “I had been clickly autosave on top of it doing it automatically but it has not been saved or recovered to my documents or my onedrive”, we would like to explain that The default for AutoSave is to always be On for files that are on the Microsoft Cloud. However, if you turn AutoSave Off for an individual file, the program will remember and will keep it off every time you reopen that file. If you switch it back On for a file, it will remember to keep in on for that file.

    The new onedrive autosave feature is nice when it works. Painful when it doesn’t, like now.

    In theory, OneDrive autosave is supposed to save almost as quickly as you type. And save a new “version” when you close.

    Sorry, if there are no versions saved in OneDrive, you are S. out of luck. The same applies when you use the old “Autorecover” and “Always create backup” features. They are nice when they work. They don’t seem to work when you need them most .

    Word seems to have some hidden code that can read people’s minds. When the document is very important to them, and time is short, it will find some way to mess up, usually corrupting the file

    Sorry, as far as I know, it is too late to do anything to recover that lost data

    OK, there may be one thing you can try, depending on exactly how / where you saved the file. Did you save it to your local hard drive and let Windows OneDRive handle the “Sync” for you, or did you save it directly in ONeDrive? If you saved to the local drive, you may be able to use an “undelete” tool to recover older versions of it from the HD.

    If you accidentally delete a file or folder in OneDrive, you may be able to recover it later from the OneDrive recycle bin.

    The solution for me was to right click on the folder containing your documents, go to properties and untick the Read-only attribute. You can do this for one specific file as well or a folder containing other folders. Hope It helps.
