Home Apps Use Instapaper in Europe today

The ongoing debacle that is Instapaper’s handling of the new GDPR rules doesn’t look likely to be resolved soon.

It has been made worse by the complete lack of information from the developers and the late notice in pulling the service which could be for one of many reasons-

They were somehow caught unawares

They don’t know what they are doing

Or they are doing things with personal data that makes it harder for them to comply with the new rules? That is purely supposition of course, but there are concerns out there as to what the reasons could be.

Anyway, many users have tried Pocket and other services while the outage continues for us Europeans, but for me personally far too many articles do not render correctly and many either end us using the default web view or they are cut half-way through. So that leaves Instapaper as the best solution for long-form reading in my opinion.

How to use instapaper in the eu

The simple solution is to download TunnelBear for free, create an account and turn it on after you have chosen Canada or the US as your location. Now save an article to Instapaper and when you go back to the app you can automatically add it to your reading list and it will be downloaded for whenever you have some time to do some reading.

Instapaper is ideal for an app like TunnelBear because it only uses the data for each article once and the free allowance should be enough for most people. Instapaper still works as an app, even in Europe, but you cannot add new articles to your list. With a solution like TunnelBear that problem is resolved, for the time being at least.

How to use instapaper in the eu

Instapaper is currently blocked in the EU because of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) laws that went into force in May. Anyone who visits the Instapaper website from an EU IP address gets told that Instapaper is “temporarily unavailable” and that they “intend to restore access as soon as possible”. Let’s look at how to get around that.

EU users of Instapaper have two options right now. The first is to use the Download options to export all your articles, and then import them into them to Pocket—Instagram’s main competitor. The second way to get work around the block. Since we’ve already got a full article on that first option, we’ll be taking a look at the second option here.

Introducing VPNs

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that reroutes your computer’s traffic through a server in a different location. This means that you can use a VPN to make it appear as if you’re browsing the internet from the US, which very conveniently, is not part of the EU.

We’ve got a full article on how to choose the right VPN for your needs, and we highly recommend giving it a read. The short version, though, is that we recommend using one of two apps:

  • ExpressVPN if you’re prepared to pay for the best VPN going.
  • TunnelBear if you want a free VPN; it’s 500MB limit a month is more than enough to use Instapaper.

Both are available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and more.

How to Use Instagram With a VPN

Since Instapaper is designed for offline reading, it’s actually pretty well suited for use with a VPN; you don’t need to keep your VPN on all the time, which saves a lot of bandwidth and hassle.

On Your Smartphone

If you open the Instapaper app on your smartphone right now, you’ll see all your articles still waiting for you to read. It’s just that you can’t sync any new articles. Whenever you try to sync, Instapaper detects your EU IP address and refuses. This means you only need to use a VPN when you want to sync new articles.

Open your VPN and turn it on. I’m demoing this with TunnelBear on my iPhone.

How to use instapaper in the euHow to use instapaper in the eu

Now, open the Instapaper app and pull down to sync. Any new articles will get downloaded. You can then disconnect from the VPN and read as normal.

How to use instapaper in the euHow to use instapaper in the eu

If you use Instapaper’s integrations with other apps, like Safari, or your RSS reader or Twitter client, you’ll also need to connect to your VPN before trying to send an article.

On Your Computer

On your computer is where you’ll most easily notice that Instapaper is blocked in the EU, since every time you visit the website you’ll be stopped from even seeing your articles. This means that to read your saved articles, you need to use a VPN the whole time you’re browsing the Instapaper site.

How to use instapaper in the eu

Connect to Your VPN. I’m demoing with TunnelBear on a Mac but the process will be similar enough whatever setup you’re using.

How to use instapaper in the eu

Now, when you head to the Instapaper website, you’ll be able to view your articles as normal.

How to use instapaper in the eu

You’ll also be able to use the Instapaper Bookmarklet or browser extension to send articles to your smartphone for offline reading, as well as any apps you have that integrate with Instapaper.

On Your Kindle

Surprisingly, Instapaper’s Kindle integration seems to work just fine. I was expecting it to kick up a fuss that I wasn’t able to get around with a VPN. Instead, since it actually delivers through Amazon’s servers, your daily or weekly round up of articles will get sent to your Kindle as normal.

Instapaper’s failure to comply with the GDPR regulation in time is incredibly annoying. The only reasons I haven’t jumped ship are that getting around it is pretty painless and I’m hopeful that they’ll fix things soon. If they don’t, then it looks like I’ll be moving to Pocket.

How to use instapaper in the eu

Kako uporabljati Instagram Z VPN

Odprite VPN in ga vklopite. Jaz sem to demoing s TunnelBear na moj iPhone.

How to use instapaper in the eu How to use instapaper in the eu

How to use instapaper in the eu How to use instapaper in the eu

How to use instapaper in the eu

Povežite se z VPN. S programom TunnelBear bom predstavil Mac, vendar bo proces dovolj podoben tistemu, ki ga uporabljate.

How to use instapaper in the eu

How to use instapaper in the eu

(Pocket-lint) – “Read later” bookmarking service Instapaper has been down in Europe this week as it tries to untangle the new GDPR legislation brought in by the European Union.

Go to Instapaper.com and you are just faced with an apology, explaining that the site is unavailable as it continues to “make changes in light of the General Data Protection Regulation”.

That might result in a better, less intrusive service in the long run but is no great shakes for those who want to use their existing Instapaper bookmarks.

There is one way you can get round that though. You can actually export your saved articles on Instapaper and used the links on a separate, similar service: Pocket.

  • Why our readers should choose FastestVPN’s Lifetime Plan (promo)
  • Download a HTML export of your saved articles by heading to http://www.instapaper.com/user/export and selecting “Download HTML file”
  • Save that file to your computer and remember where
  • Sign up for a Pocket account at https://getpocket.com/
  • Head to https://getpocket.com/import/instapaper
  • Hit the “Choose file” button on that page and select the Instapaper file you previously downloaded
  • Hit the “Import” button and wait for your saved articles to upload to Pocket
  • Job done – continue to read your saved articles

You could also always wait for Instapaper to come back up, of course. At present though, we don’t know when that might be.

Last month, Instapaper announced that it would be splitting from Pinterest, which had acquired it back in 2016. At the time, it was unclear what would happen to the premium features, which became free for users following the acquisition, but the company has now answered that question.

In a blog post today, Instapaper has announced that it will be relaunching the premium service it offered before being bought by Pinterest, in an attempt to keep the service alive. The conditions for the paid offering are similar to what was previously available – it costs $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year and grants you the following features:

Full-text search for all articles in your account

Text-to-Speech playlists on mobile

Speed reading to get through all of your articles up to 3x faster

An ad-free Instapaper website

“Send to Kindle” using a bookmarklet or our mobile apps

The news may not make its current users happy, but this was the most likely scenario given that the company is no longer funded by Pinterest.

On the bright side, the company today announced its return to countries in the European Union. The service went offline a couple of months ago due to the enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), but it seems that those issues have finally been ironed out and the service is ready to make its comeback. As compensation for the extended downtime, Instapaper is offering six months of its Premium service to those affected by the outage.

In addition to updating its privacy policy to comply with GDPR, Instapaper has also posted it on GitHub. This will allow consumers to view its version history and the changes that are made with each update, which should help ease any concerns they may have.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Instapaper announced its break from Pinterest, and it seems that the company’s new owners are getting to work quickly. Though Instapaper was part of Pinterest’s portfolio since 2016, the company went independent once more in the middle of July. One of the first things it’s doing as an independent company is bringing back Premium subscriptions, which may not sit very well with its users.

Premium subscriptions wouldn’t normally be a big deal, but the fact that their associated features were once free while Pinterest was in charge means this announcement is likely to sting for some users. Nevertheless, Instapaper explains in a blog post today that its newfound independence means that it now must worry about making enough money to offset its costs, and bringing back Premium subscriptions is the best way to do that.

Premium subscriptions to Instapaper cost $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, which isn’t too bad when compared to some other paid subscriptions out there. Features a premium subscription unlocks include full-text search for every article you’ve saved, unlimited notes, and speed reading. Subscriptions also remove ads from the Instapaper website and allow you send articles to Kindle devices as well.

“In addition to getting access to Premium features, your Instapaper Premium subscription will help ensure that we can continue developing and operating Instapaper,” the company’s Brian Donohue and Rodion Gusev wrote today. “Our goal is to build a long-term sustainable product and business, without venture capital, and we need your help to achieve that goal.”

On top of this news, Instapaper also announced its return to the European Union today. The service was taken offline following the roll out of the General Data Protection Regulation at the end of May and, up until today at least, has been inactive ever since. To apologize for the downtime, Instapaper will give six months of Premium to all EU users who were affected by the outage, which is a nice little perk, but whether or not it can tempt back users who have since defected to another service while Instapaper was away is another question entirely.

There is a growing number so sites and services that have gone offline this week after their parent companies failed to adhere to today’s GDPR deadline.

How to use instapaper in the eu

Instapaper

Instapaper, the popular bookmarking tool owned by Pinterest, has temporarily shutt off access to European users while it continues to adjust to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into effect on 25 May and fundamentally changes the way companies can handle your personal data.

With big fines on the table for non-compliance, Instapaper has made the move to effectively go dark in Europe. An email was sent to users in the EU giving them less than 24 hours notice that the shutdown would be happening. In the email, first brought to light by freelance marketer Owen William via Twitter, Instapaper says it needs to “continue to make changes”.

“Starting tomorrow May 24, 2018, access to the Instapaper service will be temporarily unavailable for residents in Europe as we continue to make changes in light of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which goes into effect May 25, 2018,” the email reads.

“We apologise for any inconvenience, and we intend to restore access as soon as possible.

“If you have any questions about your account, would like us to generate an export of your saves, or want to check in on our progress, please let us know at [email protected] We look forward to having the same Instapaper service you know and love accessible in Europe in the very near future. Thanks for your patience.”

Given that companies have had two years to prepare for GDPR, pulling the plug with one day’s notice isn’t a great look for the read-it-later app. The company has refused to go into specifics about what aspect of the regulation has held it up, although The Verge has made a guess about it being related to the GDPR’s data subject access request. The regulation allows users to request a copy of all data stored about them by a company, which can be a complex task if a comprehensive system for storing and managing information isn’t in place.

That issue may be compounded by the fact Instapaper is owned by Pinterest, and it isn’t clear how data about user’s reading habits on the former is held and used by the latter. With fines amounting to 4% of global turnover or €20 million (whichever is larger), the company is shutting down until it has everything in order.

Unroll.me

Email unsubscription service Unroll.me has also said it will be temporarily withdrawing its service from EU users, admitting it will not complete efforts to comply with GDPR by Friday’s deadline.

Yeelight

There have also been reports that smart home company Yeelight is withdrawing service from users in the EU completely. A tweet from @internetofshit shows a screenshot of a notification from the company, which reads: “According to GDPR, we will not be able to continue to provide this service to you.” Alphr has reached out to Yeelight for clarification.

Razer

And Yeelight isn’t alone, Razer’s own GDPR message said: “Effective 25 May 2018, all versions of our software and services that do not meet the GDPR regulations will be retired and no longer be usable or valid. This means you may not be able to log in to legacy versions of software and services such as Razer Synapse 2.0.” This effectively means that certain Razer mice will stop working because of GDPR, as will, potentially, the Razer phone.

Chicago Tribune

One that will likely affect fewer paying customers than those above, but is a worrying addition nonetheless, is the Chicago Tribune – the website for the American newspaper.

If someone from the EU attempts to access the site, the following message appears: “Unfortunately, our website is currently unavailable in most European countries. We are engaged on the issue and committed to looking at options that support our full range of digital offerings to the EU market. We continue to identify technical compliance solutions that will provide all readers with our award-winning journalism.”

Many of these service changes, plus others, are being outlined here in the GDPR Wall of Shame.
