Apraxia Therapy Materials: Kaufman Speech Praxis Kit 1 (Basic Level)

Therapy Materials Review: Kaufman Kit 1 (Basic Level)

This is a review of the Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment Kit for Children (Basic Level). The kit was developed by Nancy Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP. Nancy Kaufman is a nationally acclaimed expert in apraxia who has developed assessment and treatment materials in the area of apraxia. This kit contains a small manual that explains the treatment methods recommended and 201 picture cards sorted into category by syllable shape. The back of each card shows a hierarchy of acceptable responses for the picture on the card depending on the current performance level of the child.

How to Use Kaufman Cards

Target Audience

The target audience for the Kaufman Kit Basic Level will usually be children between the ages of two and six. The pictures on the cards were designed with those ages in mind. These cards will be most useful for children who are struggling with producing simple syllable shapes and need to focus on the early emerging consonants /p, b, m, t, d, n, h/.

Description of the Kaufman Kit (Basic Level)

How to Use Kaufman Cards

How to Use the Kaufman Kit Cards

Through formal or informal assessment, determine which syllable shapes are missing and which of the missing ones the child is stimulable for. Then work with the card sets for the missing syllable shapes that are easiest for the child. Remember that any of the responses on the back of the card can be considered to be correct. The responses on the back of the card are all acceptable, but get closer to the actual production of the word as you move from bottom to top. When you start working with a particular card, figure out which is the highest production the child can successfully imitate and start there gradually working your way up by using the cueing techniques described in the manual.

Therapy Activity Suggestions for Kaufman Kit Cards

  • You can always simply drill the words offering a verbal reward, sticker, or turn at a game after every 5-10 responses.
  • Make a laminated train engine and caboose. Line your cards up in between the engine and caboose making a word train and place a small reward (sticker, cheerio, etc.) on the caboose. Have the child say each word 1-5 times and when they reach the end of the train they get the reward. Then set up a new train.
  • Tape the cards in a line on the wall. Make the room as dark as possible and let the child light up each card with a flashlight. They must say the word 1-5 times before they can light up the next word.
  • Hide the cards around the room. Tell the child that you are playing hide and seek with the words and that they need to find 10 (or however many you hid) words. As they bring each word to you they need to say it 1-5 times before going to find the next word. Once they find all the cards they get a small reward. Then they cover their eyes while you hide a new set of cards. Or, you can trade and let them hide the words for you to find. They still have to say each word 1-5 times when you bring the card to them before you go find another.
  • Lay the cards on the floor in some kind of pattern and play a beanbag toss game. They say the word the beanbag lands on 1-5 times before getting to throw the next beanbag.

Pros and Cons of the Kaufman Speech Praxis Kit 1 (Basic Level)

Pros: This kit provides materials for systematically building speech from least difficult to most difficult in terms of syllable structure. Within each syllable structure, there is also a hierarchy of acceptable responses from the least motorically complex to most motorically complex (and accurate). That makes this kit ideal for working with children who have Childhood Apraxia of Speech particularly those children who are minimally verbal.

Cons: This kit is very expensive. It is only Kit 1. There is another kit that includes the later developing consonants and more complex syllable structures that you might want when a child outgrows Kit 1. That kit is also very expensive. There are only a few words (usually 6-12) in each category so if you are looking for a wide variety of words to increase generalization, that is not the purpose of this kit. Also, if your child needs practice with a wider variety of consonants, they will not be included in this kit.

For the price, I expected a big manual that was designed to educate a parent or novice SLP with little apraxia experience about the disorder itself. Then I would would like for the manual to explain in an accessible way the theory behind the Kaufman method and why it is so appropriate for treating the disorder. The manual should make it very easy to understand how to use the materials with children and give concrete examples of therapy activity ideas. To put it simply, I was underwhelmed with the manual.

Bottom Line:

If you already have the knowledge and expertise to understand how to best use these materials and you have several minimally verbal children on your caseload, this kit would be well worth the purchase price. If you do not meet both of those criteria, I believe the price is prohibitive.

Also, regarding the Kaufman cards, I just asked our SLP one day at therapy if I could have the Kaufman box and I sat down and wrote out all of the words. Many times in the beginning when Jake was completely nonverbal, I would just read the words off the list & get him to try to repeat after me. We did those same words for over a year.

Have parents of non verbal kids found the Nancy kaufman set useful

our daughter doesn’t read yet. Are these too advanced for her?

Do you mean the Kaufman cards mainly use with kids who have verbal dyspraxia or have phonological difficulties??

Reconciling your bank accounts monthly in QuickBooks is a must, but did you know that you should reconcile your credit card accounts monthly too? Doing so will ensure that common errors, such as misposted or forgotten charges, are corrected in your company’s file as the year progresses. No one enjoys the daunting task of cleaning up 12 months’ worth of transactions at the end of the year – except maybe your accountant!

As with bank reconciliations, the credit card reconciliation feature is accessed by going to the “Banking” drop-down menu at the top of your screen and selecting the “Reconcile” option. And, as with the bank register, your credit card accounts also have registers available where all charges and payments can be entered.

Unless you pay your company card in full each month, entering credit card charges on the date incurred is important. Here’s why: taxpayers are entitled to a deduction for business expenses when charged to their cards. If you make a large purchase at Office Depot on December 28 th while out for your after-Christmas shopping spree, you are permitted to deduct the expense on your 2012 tax return, even if you don’t pay the bill until January 2013. If you’re always waiting to record your credit card charges until you pay your bill, you’re inadvertently missing out on significant deductions.

The correct way to account for spending on your company card is to use the credit card register or the “enter credit card charges” option under the “Banking” pull down menu. Purchases you make throughout the month will be reflected on your company’s profit and loss statement as your credit card liability balance grows. Then, in the next month, as you start to pay down your outstanding balance, your American Express payment, for example, will be posted to the credit card liability account, reducing the balance QuickBooks shows for your card (as well as your bank account for that check you just wrote!).

Many business owners run a significant portion of their monthly business expenses through company credit cards. Those cash back offers and frequent flier miles are just too good to resist. Follow these simple steps to reconcile your charges monthly, and you’ll be able to enjoy all the perks of being a platinum card holder without the headache of a major year-end clean-up.

How to Use Kaufman Cards

On Friday, February 20, 1981, Andy Kaufman sat down in a fake restaurant, delivered scripted lines, paused, and then shook himself out of character. “I feel really stupid,” he said.

The other actors—including future Seinfeld co-star Michael Richards—looked confused; the audience hollered. On live television, Kaufman went on to say he felt the sketch (about a pair of stoned couples dining out) was lame and ineffectual. Richards went off-camera to fetch cue cards and tossed them in Kaufman’s lap. Kaufman retorted by tossing water. Someone threw butter. Stagehands pried the performers off one another. The next day, newspapers around the country were asking if Andy Kaufman had lost it.

The show was Fridays, ABC’s attempt to capture the anything-goes feel of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Debuting on April 11, 1980 to meager ratings, it treaded water with conservative network orders of six or 13 episodes at a time. According to executive producer John Moffitt, Kaufman’s appearance and the ensuing controversy probably bought it an entire additional season.

Kaufman knew the series was ailing, which is why he figured Moffitt would be receptive to his particular brand of comedy. In his stand-up, the performer was more of an antagonist of his audience than an ally: Many crowds had streamed into comedy clubs only to endure Kaufman napping in a sleeping bag or reading earnestly from The Great Gatsby, threatening to start all over again if they interrupted. (Once, Kaufman gave a nightclub a choice: the book or a record. They chose the record. It was the sound of Kaufman reading.)

Kaufman’s avant-garde humor was not for everyone. After multiple appearances on Saturday Night Live, NBC executive Dick Ebersol grew tired of his instigating behavior, declared him “not funny” and effectively banned him from the show. Fridays, however, was happy to welcome an established SNL personality and act as an enabler for whatever Kaufman wanted to do.

After convincing Moffitt to allow him and partner Bob Zmuda to play out a sword-swallowing scene in the intro that would go “awry”—Zmuda coughed up bloody spittle before the show cut to a commercial—Kaufman informed him he wanted to break out of character during the show’s closing sketch. Cast members Richards, Melanie Chartoff, and Maryedith Burrell were all aware of his plans; the crew was not. (There is some disagreement whether ABC had approved of it: Richards says no, while Moffitt maintains they had to go through the station’s standards and practices department.)

After the Fridays episode aired, ABC was deluged with letters and calls asking if it was a put-on. To Kaufman’s conceivable displeasure, a network spokesperson told the Associated Press that it had all been staged. A week later, a contrite and tearful Kaufman appeared on the show to “apologize” for his actions in what Zmuda would later describe as his patented glazed-over hostage look.

“This has been a very hard week for me,” Kaufman said. His regular role as Latka on Taxi had been jeopardized, he confessed, and the scuffle had “led to a separation from my wife.” (Kaufman was not married.) While a certain segment of the audience was aware Kaufman was effectively trolling them, another portion probably wondered if he had lost his mind. His parents, who had once taken him in for psychological counseling as a child, might have renewed their doubts.

Fridays lasted only one more year, being forced into a later time slot by the success of ABC’s Nightline; Kaufman continued to confuse people until his death from lung cancer at the age of 35 in 1984. He never quite copped to the skirmish being faked. Talking to People in 1981, he accused ABC of a cover up and denied it was prearranged. “I like the type of humor where nobody knows what’s going on,” he said. “I just want real reactions.”

Six months after the incident, Kaufman appeared on Fridays one last time to profess he was now a born-again Christian. Kaufman was Jewish.

Using the Find feature is the most efficient way to find transactions in QuickBooks. This powerful tool does not require any search indexing and will search for almost any transaction-level data, depending on your filters. A common way to locate a particular invoice is by opening the form and clicking “Previous” until the form appears on the screen. This can be a long and tedious process. Using the Find function saves you time and frustration.

To use the Find feature, go to Edit > Find in the main navigation bar or click Ctrl + F. For quick access in the future, you can add the Find feature to your icon bar by right-clicking on the icon bar and customizing it.

In the Find window, you will see two tabs: Simple and Advanced.

The Simple search allows you to look for transactions based on the type of transaction. After you have selected the transaction type, you can then search by bill, check, invoice number, etc. This is especially useful when you have limited information for a particular transaction. Using the Find feature with simple search, you can locate the invoice in no time by searching the invoice number; customer name; date range or amount.

The Advanced search is my favorite way to find a transaction when I have the transaction amount. I use the amount search more than any other advanced filter and have found it to be the fastest way to find any transaction. For example , if you come across a debit purchase on the company bank account in the amount of $52.55, and you are not sure if you have accounted for it in QuickBooks, performing an Advanced search by amount will help you find the transaction.

Missions: Kaufman Cabs

No, not the Pamela Anderson show. It’s the name of your first Kaufman Cab mission. You need to pick up a high class fare from Starfish Island in less than a minute. Drive quickly to pick up the fare. He’s all the way back on Starfish Island, so you’ll have to floor it. As you pull up to the pink marker, press L3 to sound the horn. The passenger will start trotting to your cab, only to be intercepted by another cabbie. Punk.

Now you’ll have to chase the other cab down to get your fare back. Do what you normally would to run someone off the road. Ram him, shoot the Uzi out the window, etc. Eventually, after considerable damage, the other taxi will cough up its passenger. He’ll get back in your cab. Drive him to the pink blip at Escobar International and you’ll score $1000.

Friendly Rivalry

It’s time to get aggressive again. Other cab comapnies are stealing your fares. This means it’s time to rain fire again. You’ll be automatically given an Uzi for the job, so no use chasing down extra weapons before you begin. Hunt down the competitions’ cabs (the yellow blips) and run them off the road. It’s best to use drive-by tactics, by ramming and such works as well.

You don’t have to stay in the cab the whole time. Feel free to switch to a burlier or more stable vehicle if your ride gets dinged. Also, be sure you don’t try to take these cabs on foot. No matter what kind of heat you’re packing, you are vulnerable to being run over, and these cabbies are super-aggro. Once you take all three out, though, you’ll be living large with $2000.

Cabmageddon

For maximum effectiveness and efficiency, have a Sniper Rifle along for this ride. Ms. Cortez (aka Mercedes) requests you to pick her up. Head over to the pink dot by the docks. Once there, you’ll realize it’s an ambush! You have to stay alive for 30 seconds.

Tons of cabs will rush you. but no worry. Get them all to follow you into the corner, by the low seawall. This is next to 8-Ball’s garage. The cabs will all collect in this area. Jump up on the wall and pepper their cabs with gunfire. One will explode, setting off a chain reaction of explosions.

“I try to imbue my work with a sort of interiority,” says Lucy (Jessie Buckley), the artists-physics student-girlfriend of Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.”

The line could hardly describe Kaufman better, all the more so because it’s spoken by a character that may or may not be a figment of subconsciousness. No film writer has more regularly made his home inside the brain, treating the labyrinthine corridors of thought like sets to be peopled. John Ford had Monument Valley. Kaufman has the mind.

You wouldn’t call it a wondrous place — though it can be. In Kaufman’s melancholic films (“Being John Malkovich,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Synecdoche, New York”) there are streams of consciousness, rivers of anxiety, oceans of embarrassment and, hopefully, a little life boat of authenticity.

Kaufman has, in a way, already reviewed “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” himself. His recent 700-page novel, “Antkind,” is about a pathetic middle-aged film critic named B Rosenberger Rosenberg who at one point dismally rates Kaufman’s own films. Of the writer-director’s upcoming movie he decrees: “Whatever it is, it’s certain to be yet another turgid, overhyped foray into Kaufman’s self-referential, self-congratulatory psyche.”

It’s hard not to admire the self-deprecation, but I’d give it more credit than that. “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” which debuts Friday on Netflix, isn’t Kaufman’s most dazzling puzzle (“Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich”), his most ambitious (the remarkable “Synecdoche”) or even his most gently funny/painful (his last one, the animated “Anomalisa”). A bleaker wintery wind blows though “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” a film Kaufman has suggested could be his last as a director.

It begins on the road. During a blizzard, Lucy and her boyfriend of seven weeks Jake (Jesse Plemons) are driving to the farmhouse he grew up in to meet his parents. Our perspective is Lucy’s, and she’s thinking the relationship has already run its course. Pondering whether it’s just easier to keep going, she could be talking about breaking up or suicide. In the car, with a mythical snowy nighttime blur around them, they talk Wordsworth; she recites a dark poem about homecoming; by discussing movies, viruses come up. “Viruses are just one more example of everything,” says Lucy.

There’s the sense that the conversation — halting, overlapping, full of corrections and backtracks — is as much about the awkward back-and-forth as it is what they’re talking about. Is this a dream? If it is, whose dream is it? Jake or Lucy’s? Someone, maybe everyone in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is a projection. If this is a dream world, movies have their own reckoning for their role in invading and warping our fantasies. A maudlin mock Robert Zemeckis film makes a satirical cameo.

When they arrive at the house, the disorientation only increases. Jake’s parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis, both surrealistically sensational) are present one moment, absent another. They appear in vastly different ages. Even Lucy’s name and profession shifts seemingly haphazardly. A picture of the wall of Jake as a child, she notices, looks just like her.

Kaufman, who famously turned his futile attempts to adapt Susan Orlean’s “The Orchid Thief” into “Adaptation,” is this time working from a novel by Canadian author Iain Reid. It, too, was slippery with perspective and reality, but it coalesced more distinctly as from Jake’s point-of-view and around an incident from the past.

Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” spirals more mysteriously into the mind. There’s a dance sequence down high-school halls, a staged musical and some profound lines of dialogue: “We’re stationary. Time blows through us.”

I have my theories about how this all pieces together, but I’m not convinced they matter. Certainly some will be less enamored with an experience that can feel like tumbling through a succession of trap doors. It’s a falling that seems to lead further from epiphany, not closer to it, until you’re faced with, of all things, a staged performance of “Oklahoma.”

But to me, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” nearly sustains something beautiful and sad that blends consciousness and time. Buckley is extraordinary, whether she’s real or not. And the fleeting presence of Guy Boyd, as an elderly janitor and possible linchpin to the whole movie, is hauntingly good.

My only wish, more than any movie that’s been released straight to the home these last few months, is to have watched “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” with an audience. Kaufman’s greatest gift, I think, is to open up to others an inner honesty that doesn’t often find its way on screen. It’s a desperate grasping best experienced, in confusion and clarity, with others. Kaufman, like us all, contains multitudes.

“I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” a Netflix release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for language including some sexual references. Running time: 134 minutes. Three stars out of four.

How to Use Kaufman Cards

First place in last week’s South Carolina Open, a 54-hole mini-tour event on the GPro circuit, was $10,000. Smylie Kaufman didn’t win, but he did shoot what he figured was his first bogey-free round in two years, a four-under-par 68, in the second round.

Augusta National is less than 90 miles away from Columbia Country Club, but it might as well have been on another planet. Three years ago, Kaufman entered the final round of his first Masters a stroke off the lead and playing alongside his good pal Jordan Spieth. Of the 30 players who made the cut last week, Kaufman finished 24th. His haul: $820.

“That was a big step, that he was willing to go,” said Kaufman’s off-again/back-on-again coach, Tony Ruggiero. “If he continues to do stuff like that and just go play, he’ll be OK.”

This week, Kaufman is back on the PGA Tour, at least temporarily. With only past-champion status—the equivalent of essentially no status—he’s in the field at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. It was there four years ago when Kaufman’s fast rise began in earnest after a surprising final-round 61 propelled him to victory in just his fifth career start.

Life sped up from there: A few months later, that Masters; then the Instagram-famous SB2K16 trip to the Bahamas with shirtless shenanigans alongside buddies Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas.

But while the rest of the group’s collective star would continue to shine, Kaufman’s flamed out fast. In 2017-’18, he missed 18 cuts in 22 starts and withdrew once.

Plagued by an elbow injury, Kaufman took a major medical extension and had five starts last season to earn enough FedEx Cup points to keep his card. He missed the cut in four of them and finished 71st in the other. Exempt into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, he then racked up two more missed cuts before withdrawing from the final event.

Along the way, he spoke of the dark side of social media, saying that it “sucks.” He took a self-imposed sabbatical from Twitter and Instagram for a couple of months and has tried to remain vigilant in that restraint. To wit, over the past 12 months he has posted to Instagram just 25 times, a handful of them superficial sponsor-related posts. By comparison, in the year after his lone PGA Tour victory he had more than double that.

Instead, he has tried to focus on enjoying life and the process of finding himself and eventually his game.

“I’m just trying to stay out of the media and social world as I get my game back in order,” Kaufman said via text, politely declining to go much deeper. “I’m just trying to focus on golf.”

That’s where Ruggiero comes in.

The two hooked up again after Kaufman texted him following a missed cut at the KFT’s stop in Boise at the end of August.

“He was pretty lost, which is easy to fall into out there,” Ruggiero said. “My thought was, Why try to reinvent the wheel?

Ruggiero noticed a lot of knee action and lateral movement had crept into Kaufman’s move, along with too much face rotation of his club as his arms tried to create all the speed in his swing. So he sent the 27-year-old a few videos of his swing from his senior year at LSU and his first couple of years on tour.

“When he played his best he turned around his spine,” Ruggiero said. “He’d always been a player who was centered, stable and connected to the ground. So we’re trying to get his knees and lower body to be quieter, with his stance a little wider, the ball up in his stance and just let his hips turn.”

That said, Ruggiero didn’t want Kaufman to get overloaded with a bunch of swing thoughts this week, so their work on the range was minimal. They spent Monday and Tuesday together with most of the focus on Kaufman playing. Ruggiero walked 11 holes with him on Tuesday as he played alongside Sepp Straka. Kaufman didn’t miss a fairway on the back nine at TPC Summerlin, according to Ruggiero, and made a few birdies along the way.

It was a step in the right direction. But the first of what figures to be many as Kaufman tries to work his way back to the PGA Tour.

“Golf-swing-wise, he’s trending in the right direction,” Ruggiero said. “I think he’s in a good place for turning things around. The key is tempering expectations. He can’t get to the place he’s trying to get to in a week.”

Increased early voting simply means more voters make their decisions with less information than those who wait until the first Tuesday in November.

Whether in Chicago or Laramie , COVID-19 concerns have led to increased support for mail-in voting.

Expecting a surge, many officials already mailed out absentee ballots , and more than half the states will make them available before the first presidential debate on Sept. 29.

The nationwide share of ballots cast by mail steadily increased from 12 to almost 25% between 2004 and 2016. A late July poll reports 70 percent believe a postal option should be available .

Voting early might be the choice of some, including disingenuous athletes , but not me. I’ve never voted by mail, and despite partisan propaganda and our current dramatic year, I still won’t; nor will my wife, my father or most sentient people I know.

Mailed ballots go missing, get delivered late, are rejected because signatures can’t be verified, or are torn in transit.

For example, nearly 20,000 mailed Florida ballots weren’t tabulated in this year’s presidential primary because they arrived after the deadline. Across America, more than a half-million ballots were rejected as “non-conforming” in primaries. And that’s only counting 30 states surveyed. Minnesota had almost 10,000 ballots rejected and over 100,000 were tossed out in California.

In 2016, about 320,000 mailed ballots were rejected nationwide during the general election. Many expect that number to approach 1 million in 2020.

And even though the attorney general clearly explained how fraud is a major issue, that’s not even my concern.

An informed voter does not vote early . They know late-breaking developments and misinformation could alter a decision. (We know what happened just over a week before last Election Day.)

Increased early voting simply means more voters make their decisions with less information than those who wait until the first Tuesday in November .

Speaking of Tuesdays, almost two million votes were cast days before the “Super Tuesday” primaries in March. Thousands of those early ballots were for Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who suspended their campaigns just hours before the big day. The votes didn’t count. When you vote early, you sacrifice power for so-called convenience.

I am absolutely not worried about catching COVID-19 from voting. Though I know privileged liberals have locked themselves in high-rise apartments for six months (letting others sacrifice on their behalf), I’ve been grocery shopping, eating out, attending baseball games, playing golf, and traveling extensively without mishap since April. Going to Walmart, Costco or partaking in urban riots is more dangerous than your local polling place. I bet many do the former, so why are they scared of the latter? The pandemic is an indoor issue .

When I voted in the primaries last month, I was done with my civic duty in about three minutes. And I came away impressed. Poll workers had the facility immaculate and organized to ensure safety. There were masks, hand sanitizer, clean pens, and space between voting booths.

As usual, our sheltered media has it wrong. It’s not a “dangerous spectacle that forced voters to choose between participating in an important election and protecting their health” as an apocalyptic New York Times editorial proclaimed earlier this year. Data indicated in-person voting posed no spike or health hazard in that election.

Much of this is ideological , with two-thirds of Joe Biden supporters planning to vote without having all the requisite information compared to barely one-third for Pres. Trump.

Democrats already doubled Republican absentee requests in North Carolina and Florida.

I like to “pull the lever” or punch the card or fill in the bubble. I’ve never missed an election in over 20 years of eligibility across five states. It’s a few minutes of my time every other year. And I always vote on Election Day because, despite a busy schedule, I make time. Polls are open 13-14 hours.

So I agree with Jeff Jacoby, who recently wrote:

“I cherish the communitarian spirit of voting together. Decades after I first entered a polling place, I am still moved by the civic ritual of assembling on a fixed date as equals, peacefully engaged in self-government. Elections are more meaningful when voters act collectively — when we leave our homes, set aside our smartphones, and join with our neighbors in a public space to help choose our leaders and make choices that will guide our government. Politics is divisive and dispiriting, but voting in person is a stirring reinforcement of the mutuality and equality that are at the core of America.”

How to Use Kaufman Cards

The feud between Andy Kaufman and Jerry Lawler was one of the most successful uses of celebrity in professional wrestling and is still talked about to this day. It gave a tiny wrestling promotion in Memphis national exposure. The impact of this was huge on the wrestling business as Vince McMahon used the template that was created in Memphis to start the Rock-n-Wrestling era which turned his northeast promotion into an international entertainment powerhouse. He used Cyndi Lauper to get his wrestlers featured on MTV and then used Mr. T to garner international press to promote.

Who Was Andy Kaufman?

Andy Kaufman was a star on the hit TV show Taxi and frequent guest on Saturday Night Live. As part of his comedy routine, he would wrestle women and declared himself the Intergender World Champion. In 1982, he took his comedy skit to the Memphis wrestling territory.

I’m From Hollywood

When he went to Memphis, he offered any woman in the crowd $1,000 and his hand in marriage if they could beat him. Local legend, Jerry “The King” Lawler was getting sick of seeing him humiliate the local women. He trained a lady named Foxy and after she lost and Kaufman wouldn’t stop humiliating her, Lawler pushed Kaufman off her. Kaufman threatened to sue but later accepted Lawler’s challenge to a match.

The Big Match

They finally fought on April 5, 1982. After several minutes of stalling, Lawler allowed Kaufman to put him in a headlock. Lawler quickly gave him a suplex and two pile drivers (the move was banned in Memphis). Lawler lost by disqualification and Kaufman was in the hospital for several days. The match made headlines around the country and was even featured a few weeks later on Saturday Night Live.

Late Night with David Letterman

On July 28, 1982, Lawler and Kaufman appeared on Late Night with David Letterman to air their differences. As they were going to a commercial break, Lawler smacked Kaufman in the face. When they came back from break, Kaufman launched into a profanity-laced tirade that was so obscene that NBC threatened to never have him on the air again. Kaufman threatened to sue them for $200 million and then to buy the network with the money and turn it into a 24-hour wrestling network. This story was so huge, it was on the front page of The New York Times.

The Feud in the Ring Continues

Kaufman teamed up with manager Jimmy Hart and offered a $5,000 bounty to any wrestler that would give Lawler the piledriver. Eventually, Hart and Kaufman got into an argument leading Kaufman to ask Lawler for help. Lawler agreed to help Kaufman on the condition that Kaufman never wrestles again. Three minutes into the match, Kaufman threw powder into Lawler’s eyes and The Assassins gave Lawler the piledriver.

The Aftermath

Andy Kaufman died of cancer on May 16, 1984. Jerry Lawler continued to be the “King” of Memphis and has been a commentator for the WWE since the mid-90s. Most importantly, while other promoters were happy to see a wrestler beat up a Hollywood star, a young Vince McMahon saw the publicity dealing with stars could generate and used this blueprint to start his domination of the wrestling world. This feud lives on through a documentary called I’m from Hollywood which airs frequently on Comedy Central and was revisited in the hit movie Man on the Moon starring Jim Carrey.

When faced with 150 shades of white at the paint store, finding the perfect hue seems like an impossible task. Sometimes the process requires an expert eye. Enter Donald Kaufman. The color guru to top designers and architects, Kaufman has been helping clients navigate this sea of white for over 30 years. Along with his wife and partner, Taffy Dahl, Kaufman has created over 30,000 custom colors and worked with art galleries, museums, and legends such as Philip Johnson, Peter Eisenman, and Charles Gwathmey. His Donald Kaufman Color collection includes 104 shades, plus he introduces a color of the month inspired by everything from mummies to a lake in the French Alps to a utility box. The colors are available in three finishes: Matte for walls, Flat for ceilings or light walls, and Pearl for trim or walls requiring a bit of sheen.

When it comes to white, Kaufman recommends judging the colors on their own merits, rather than comparing them to other colors. “The first mistake to avoid is getting caught up on the name of the color or holding the whites against other colors,” he says. “The eye naturally looks for contrast among hues or materials, and this is the perfect neutral to do the job.” Based on the light, sheen, and surrounding objects, the paint can have a variety of subtle nuances. While you may be considering pairing white with another shade, Kaufman suggests that the neutral may be all you need for a polished interior. “Often a second color is not even necessary,” Kaufman says.

But just in case you don’t have Kaufman’s eye for color, we asked the expert for his advice on choosing and using white paint. Read on for tips on making the most of the ultimate neutral—with three stylish rooms that use white to great effect.

Debt consolidation loans in Kaufman TX may not be good for you

Kaufman debt consolidation loans are a financial tool that people often mistake with other types of credit card debt relief solutions. While nothing can replace Texas bankruptcy services as a solution to eliminating a large amount of credit card, there are some consolidation alternatives. One alternative that has become popular over the recent years to consolidate debt Kaufman TX is credit consolidation. These free credit card debt relief programs are a way that an individual will offer the creditor less than what is owed. Over the last few years many people have tried using debt relief to avoid filing bankruptcy. The Smart Card Technical Reference describes the Windows smart card infrastructure for physical smart cards and how smart card-related components work in Windows. This document also contains information about tools that information technology (IT) developers and administrators can use to troubleshoot, debug, and deploy smart card-based strong authentication in the enterprise.

Audience

This document explains how the Windows smart card infrastructure works. To understand this information, you should have basic knowledge of public key infrastructure (PKI) and smart card concepts. This document is intended for:

Enterprise IT developers, managers, and staff who are planning to deploy or are using smart cards in their organization.

Smart card vendors who write smart card minidrivers or credential providers.

What are smart cards?

Smart cards are tamper-resistant portable storage devices that can enhance the security of tasks such as authenticating clients, signing code, securing e-mail, and signing in with a Windows domain account.

Smart cards provide:

Tamper-resistant storage for protecting private keys and other forms of personal information.

Isolation of security-critical computations that involve authentication, digital signatures, and key exchange from other parts of the computer. These computations are performed on the smart card.

Portability of credentials and other private information between computers at work, home, or on the road.

Smart cards can be used to sign in to domain accounts only, not local accounts. When you use a password to sign in interactively to a domain account, Windows uses the Kerberos version 5 (v5) protocol for authentication. If you use a smart card, the operating system uses Kerberos v5 authentication with X.509 v3 certificates.

Virtual smart cards were introduced in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 to alleviate the need for a physical smart card, the smart card reader, and the associated administration of that hardware. For information about virtual smart card technology, see Virtual Smart Card Overview.

In this technical reference

This reference contains the following topics.

This example shows how to use a Storyboard to animate properties. To animate a property by using a Storyboard, create an animation for each property that you want to animate and also create a Storyboard to contain the animations.

The type of property determines the type of animation to use. For example, to animate a property that takes Double values, use a DoubleAnimation. The TargetName and TargetProperty attached properties specify the object and property to which the animation is applied.

To start a storyboard in Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML), use a BeginStoryboard action and an EventTrigger. The EventTrigger begins the BeginStoryboard action when the event that is specified by its RoutedEvent property occurs. The BeginStoryboard action starts the Storyboard.

The following example uses Storyboard objects to animate two Button controls. To make the first button change in size, its Width is animated. To make the second button change color, the Color property of the SolidColorBrush is used to set the Background of the button that is animated.

Example

Although animations can target both a FrameworkElement object, such as a Control or Panel, and a Freezable object, such as a Brush or Transform, only framework elements have a Name property. To assign a name to a freezable so that it can be targeted by an animation, use the x:Name Directive, as the previous example shows.

If you use code, you must create a NameScope for a FrameworkElement and register the names of the objects to animate with that FrameworkElement. To start the animations in code, use a BeginStoryboard action with an EventTrigger. Optionally, you can use an event handler and the Begin method of Storyboard. The following example shows how to use the Begin method.

For more information about animation and storyboards, see Animation Overview.

If you use code, you are not limited to using Storyboard objects in order to animate properties. For more information and examples, see Animate a Property Without Using a Storyboard and Animate a Property by Using an AnimationClock.

Are you saddled with student loans? It’s an awful feeling. It could feel like you’re in a deep hole and that doesn’t have the tools to get out. The path to paying it off may seem endless. Today’s episode aims to help you start feeling in control of your student loans.

We also talk about credit cards, which can be useful, but they can also be super sketchy. They’re a powerful tool when used correctly, making commerce more convenient and easy, but they also offer a lot of temptation to spend more than you have. If you are debt-free, credit cards might be a good tool to track your expenses, build your credit score, and offer a layer of security so you don’t have to carry around cash everywhere. If you treat credit cards like the tool they are and pay them off every month, you’ll be one step closer to building a credit history for yourself. Here are some things you should definitely know about having credit cards.

In today’s episode, we’re talking about both how to pay off student loans and how to use credit cards. We dive into how to make payments automatic, where to start when choosing which loan to pay off first, how to avoid new debt and how to use credit cards (yes those are a type of loan too). I’m not a financial advisor, so please ask your financial advisor for advice. Let’s dive in.

I have 2 graphics cards in my laptop (Alienware M11X); the first is the default Intel graphics card, and the second is a high perf Nvidia card.

I would like to play my Steam games with the Nvidia card (namely Half Life 2, Ep1), but it keeps playing with the Intel card. This is what is shown everytime I start the game:

I have tried starting steam.exe with the Nvidia card, but that doesn’t change the card the game uses. I have also tried setting the Nvidia card to the default card to use for all programs, but the game still does not use it. Is there a way for me to do this?

I have a similar computer set up, and here is how I make it work:

Go to the NVIDIA Control Panel by right clicking on your desk top and clicking on “NVIDIA Control Panel”.

In the default screen that pops up (it should be “manage 3D settings”, and the “Program Settings” tab should be automatically selected), under “1. Select a program to customize:” hit the “Add” button.

From here, navigate to the folder where your steam games are located. For me, it is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon.

Select the folder for the game you want to use your NVIDIA card for, and find the .exe for that game (it’s usually right in the main game folder). Select it and hit open.

Then, under “2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:” open the drop-down menu and select “High-performance NVIDIA processor”.

Finally, hit apply in the far bottom right corner, and you should be good to go!

When you start the game from Steam, the .exe will be opened, which will now run with your NVIDIA card by default rather than your integrated card. I’ve noticed that most older games, when started, will use the integrated card by default. The method described above can be used for any .exe file, not just games in your steam library!

Most applications (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) include fonts that are automatically installed when you install the software. For example, applications that are created especially for document design projects, such as Microsoft Publisher, often come with quite a few extra fonts that you can use with any other program on your computer.

However, sometimes you may want to install custom fonts that you’ve created, purchased or downloaded from somewhere else. In this article we’ll talk about how to install those fonts so you can use them in Microsoft Office.

Note: To embed fonts in a Microsoft Office Word document or PowerPoint presentation, see Embedding fonts on the PPTools site.

Locate custom fonts on the Web

In addition to acquiring and using fonts installed with other applications, you can download fonts from the Internet. Some fonts on the Internet are sold commercially, some are distributed as shareware, and some are free. The Microsoft Typography site site provides links to other font foundries (the companies or individuals outside of Microsoft who create and distribute fonts) where you can find additional fonts.

After you find a font that you would like to use with an Office application, you can download it and install it through the operating system that you are currently using on your computer. Because fonts work with the operating system, they are not downloaded to Office directly. You should go through the system’s Fonts folder in Windows Control Panel and the font will work with Office automatically. On the Mac you use the Font Book to add the font and then copy it to the Windows Office Compatible folder.

Many third parties outside of Microsoft package their fonts in .zip files to reduce file size and to make downloading faster. If you have downloaded a font that is saved in .zip format double-click the zip file to open it.

Install a custom font you have downloaded

Once you’ve downloaded the font you want to install you need to install it in the operating system. Once the font is properly installed in the operating system Microsoft Office will be able to see and use it. For detailed instructions select the operating system you’re using from the drop-down box below.

  • Select your operating system
  • Windows 7, 8 or 10
  • Mac

Find the font file that you downloaded, keeping in mind that it may be contained within a .zip file. It’s probably located in your downloads folder.

Double-click the font file to open it in the Font Previewer

How to Use Kaufman Cards

If you’re satisfied that this is the font you want, click Install at the top left.

Close the Font Previewer, and open your Office program. You should now see your new font included on the font list.

Find the font file you downloaded – it likely has a .ttf or .otf extension and it’s probably in your downloads folder. Double-click on it.

Note: If the font file has a .zip extension you need to open that .zip file and open the font file from there.

It will open in the font previewer. Click Install Font. It will open in the Font Book.

Close the Font Book. Your font should now be available to Microsoft Office.

Note: If you’re using Office 2011 for Mac, you may need to drag and drop the font to the Windows Office Compatible collection in the Font Book to make it available to Microsoft Office.

Sharing files that contain non-standard fonts

When you install a custom font, each font will work only with the computer you’ve installed it on. Custom fonts that you’ve installed on your computer might not display the same way on a different computer. Text that is formatted in a font that is not installed on a computer will display in Times New Roman or the default font.

Therefore, if you plan to share Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, or Excel files with other people, you’ll want to know which fonts are native to the version of Office that the recipient is using. If it isn’t native, you may have to embed or distribute the font along with the Word file, PowerPoint presentation, or Excel spreadsheet. For more information about this see Fonts that are installed with Microsoft Office.
