How effective are luma’s parental controls

Setting up Wi-Fi in your home has never really changed. You buy one router, hope it reaches every corner of your home, and then react in frustration when it doesn’t. Businesses have always had a solution to this problem — putting multiple Wi-Fi access points throughout a large space — and now some startups are trying to bring that approach to the home. The latest is Luma, a new router system that’s supposed to make it easy to fill a home with strong Wi-Fi and provide a homeowner with much more control over what happens on their network.

Parental controls show you what site everyone is visiting

The Wi-Fi part is straightforward. You can buy just a single Luma router, but you’re expected to buy several of them at once — they’re sold in a three pack — and place them throughout your home. Once they’re set up, the routers will all form a single network, so you’ll only have to connect once, even as you move throughout the house; the routers can even take care of moving you between 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks.

But that’s where the basics of Luma stop and the more interesting — and invasive — aspects begin. Unlike typical routers that have bewildering settings pages, Luma can be managed entirely through a simple companion app. And that companion app is able to do quite a few other things, including show what devices are connected to the network and what those devices are doing. That means showing everything from what servers your smart thermostat is connecting with to the exact websites that people in your house are viewing (it cannot, however, show the specific content; so you may see that someone is viewing Facebook, but you won’t see their private messages).

Luma’s activity tracking is meant for monitoring children: a content filter is included that allows you to lock certain users into viewing sites that are rated G, PG, PG-13, and so on; requests to bypass the filter can be sent on a site-by-site basis after they’ve been blocked, and a chat window can be activated to let parents discuss it. Luma also suggests using its tracking abilities to see if kids are doing their homework or browsing the web. The app can also be used to set internet time limits. It really seems to have robust parental controls.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

Where it gets more problematic is that you can only sort of turn this off. Luma’s activity tracking isn’t a niche feature — it’s front and center on the app, with everyone’s activity and snapshots of the sites they visit presented like an Instagram feed. Their history is recorded for a year, too. The network’s administrator can tell Luma to hide certain users’ activity, so it won’t be displayed, but there’s no way to lock that setting in. The administrator can just go back and unhide their activity later. Watching every site your child visits is overbearing at a minimum, but the app could also allow one adult to spy on another, since only one person can be Luma’s administrator. That’s a huge issue.

Luma is also touting the additional security features built into its router and app. It analyzes traffic looking both for intruders on the network and for whether any local computers might be infected with malware, which might cause them to speak with strange servers. Luma will also regularly scan devices on the network to see if any are set up with default passwords, which it’ll prompt the administrator to change. Another security feature is that you don’t have to give the router’s password out to anyone: when someone tries to connect to a Luma, they’ll get an interstitial pop-up — kind of like when you try to connect to Starbucks’ Wi-Fi — which will stay put while the administrator chooses to grant them access or not, and for how long.

Luma tries gives you network powers that businesses usually have

Its all impressive tech, but it’s clear that Luma’s business-style approach to home network management can go a bit too far. (Luma comes from a team that’s created and sold several other startups involving business network security.) Whether you should actually have so much power over a network is worth considering before getting a Luma. There are other options like this, too. The most similar is Eero, another multi-room Wi-Fi system that’s supposed to make it easy to get a good connection anywhere throughout a house. Eero also has an app that handles guest access and security, but it doesn’t show you everything that people are viewing. It was supposed launch over the summer, but has been delayed until next year.

Luma is also launching next year, with shipments expected at an unspecified point in the spring. At that time, Luma is also supposed to go on sale in some stores, including Best Buy and Home Depot. Preorders start today, with Luma selling all of its units for half price. A single router will be $99, and a three pack will be $249. Eventually, those prices will rise to $199 and $499, matching Eero.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

Luma’s home Wi-Fi system is easy to set up and use, and it even comes with basic parental controls that allow you to block inappropriate content from your kids while they surf the web. But it has some…caveats.

Luma’s parental controls work by using Domain Name Service (DNS) filtering, which simply blocks certain web addresses that are known to contain inappropriate content. Luma says that websites are placed into categories and the categories are assigned to different ratings within the Luma app.

First, let’s talk about how to set it up, and then we can talk about its shortcomings.

How to Set Up Luma’s Parental Controls

Luma’s parental controls are pretty barebones, and come with just a basic filtering feature that allows you to set a dial on a scale rated from G to R (just like how movies are rated).

To access Luma’s parental controls, open up the app and tap on the “Filtering” tab in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

By default, internet access is unrestricted, but by tapping and holding on the white circle toward the bottom and dragging it to a preferred level, your Luma network will begin to block certain websites and content.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

Here’s what each level allows and doesn’t allow, per Luma:

  • G: Only provides access to child-friendly content like Sprout, Disney, or Nick Jr.
  • PG: Provides access to Google, Wikipedia, and other educational or child-friendly content.
  • PG-13: Filters smoking, alcohol, drugs, and violence-themed content.
  • R: Filters cyber-threats, illegal activities, and X-rated content.

If you only want the kids in the house to be subjected to Luma’s parental controls, you can pick and choose which devices on the network will be restricted. Unfortunately, you can’t just tap on a device on the network and choose its content filtering level, but rather you have to add profiles of the people in your household and assign devices to those profiles. So if Johnny has a smartphone and a laptop, you can link those device to his Luma profile.

To add a person, start by tapping on the “People” tab at the bottom of the screen.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

How Effective Is the Content Filtering?

Since Luma uses DNS-based filtering, it’s not the best at blocking out inappropriate content when you want it to. In fact, it’s extremely easy to get around the restrictions.

It will block domain names that are associated with adult content, like and thousands of other blatant porn-centric websites, but sometimes it doesn’t get it right. For example, setting the content filtering to PG still allowed me to go to sites like and, as well as sites that weren’t necessarily adult themed but have NSFW content readily available, like Reddit and Imgur.

Furthermore, I could still do a Google Image search for “porn” and it would show me all kinds of stuff that would be completely inappropriate for someone restricted to a PG rating.

It’s certainly better than not having any parental controls at all, but it does a pretty terrible job for the most part. Hopefully Luma changes things up in the near future and actually makes its content filtering useful.

Hvor effektiv er indholdsfiltreringen?

How effective are luma’s parental controls

Parenting issues will not be solved because ‘there is an app for that’

How effective are luma’s parental controls

New Study on Online Parental Controls from EU Kids Online:

A critical stance towards online parental controls is paramount as their functionalities cut both ways. Notwithstanding all good intentions, the use of parental controls has repercussions that not only involve opportunities with respect to children’s safety, but also threats that affect the trust relationship between the parent and child.

Parental controls should not be conceived of as helicopter apps

In their EU Kids Online research report, reviewing English language academic research on the topic of parental controls and children, Bieke Zaman and Marije Nouwen conclude that the majority of today’s parental controls are all about prevention, focusing on avoiding risks and restricting behaviour. However, (over-)controlling and (over)protective parenting practices may come with the unfortunate by-product that children are likely to miss out on online opportunities.

A one-sided focus on protection by means of prevention may even be detrimental to children’s rights and wellbeing. Preventing online activities from happening may, for instance, impede children’s right to benefit from online relationships, communications, explorations, information, etc. When restrictions are enforced by the parent without any explanation or negotiation, it is likely to worsen internal family dynamics. Big brother-like ‘spying’ behaviour through the use of parental controls may also involve the risk of revealing information about others.

Therefore, parental tools should not be conceived of as helicopter apps that serve the needs of parents who would like to ‘hover’ over their child wittingly or unwittingly at all costs. The potential of parental controls lies beyond mere preventive and protective functions. Since we can never fully protect children online, protective measures may include solutions that help children build more resilience to cope with the risk and harm they may encounter. Control and restrictive measures cannot achieve this goal.

How effective are parental controls?

As for the effectiveness of parental controls, Bieke Zaman and Marije Nouwen scrutinized the existing body of research to come to the conclusion that “We don’t know whether parental controls really work! Previous research on the use of parental controls has not yet reached a conclusive answer on their effectiveness in reducing children’s online risks.”

The question of whether or not they work can never yield a black or white answer. If parents decide to install parental controls, they will not integrate them in a similar way in the mix of parental mediation strategies, which tend to be complex, dynamic and often paradoxical in nature. Parents’ mediation practices depend on contextual demands, which evolve over time (see e.g., the rapidly changing popularity of a particular content or device) and vary between locations (e.g., more relaxing rules in the car or restaurant). Under certain circumstances, technologies serve as a substitute (e.g., as a ‘babysitter’), while under other they form the subject of parent-child interactions.

Recommendations for parents

Avoid overprotective parenting

  • Parents should avoid over-controlling or overprotective parenting;
  • Parents may not conceive parental controls as helicopter apps for ‘hovering’ over their children wittingly or unwittingly at all costs;
  • Parents should be aware that punishments (e.g., prohibiting adolescents to use social media) do not teach children values or norms, and increase the likelihood of secret misbehaviour.

Be aware of ethical challenges

  • Parents should discuss parental control settings with their child, as these settings will eventually affect children’s future (online) activities and privacy;
  • Parents should be aware of the far reaching ethical consequences that the use of parental controls may present beyond the family unit. Monitoring children’s online behaviour may disclose information about children’s friends and other individuals.

Parental controls as a communication starter

  • The use of parental controls may not be based on (c)overt control, but should focus on parental support and the creation of clear expectations instead;
  • Parental controls should be understood as facilitators for parent-child discussions on what entails appropriate and inappropriate content and behaviours;
  • Parents should be transparent in discussing their motives and intentions to use parental controls.

Recommendations for industry:

  • Focus on digital literacy development in families with children
  • Industry and app developers should integrate parental controls with the existing, but fragmented, educational initiatives that are spread over various websites, brochures and workshops.
  • Building resilience
  • Protective measures should also entail solutions that help children build resilience to cope with the harm and risks they may encounter.
  • Facilitating opportunities
  • The next generation of parental controls should provide more than setting limits, and also support parents in processes of (mutual) learning and (joint) engagement.

Information about the project and survey:

The EU Kids Online network has been funded by the EC Safer Internet Programme in three successive phases of work from 2006–14 to enhance knowledge of children’s and parents’ experiences and practices regarding risky and safer use of the internet and new online technologies.

As a major part of its activities, EU Kids Online conducted a face-to-face, in-home survey during 2010 of 25,000 9- to 16-year-old internet users and their parents in 25 countries, using a stratified random sample and self-completion methods for sensitive questions.

Now including researchers and stakeholders from 33 countries in Europe and beyond, the network continues to analyse and update the evidence base to inform policy.

Kadangi “Luma” naudoja DNS pagrįstą filtravimą, tai geriausia neleisti netinkamo turinio, kai to reikia.

Be to, vis tiek galėčiau atlikti “Google” vaizdų paieškos “pornografijos” paiešką, ir jis parodys man visas įvairias medžiagas, kurios būtų visiškai netinkamos žmonėms, kurie turi tik PG reitingą.

KIDS love using the internet: the age of smartphone ownership continually tumbles downwards and the range of internet-enabled devices in the home has grown exponentially in the past few years.

The opportunities to create, connect and discover, anytime and anywhere, are incredible.

We all want to keep children safe online and the UK’s online safety debate has been much concerned with applying technology which can protect them.

However, it is important to recognise that these are merely helpful tools: they do not provide a solution to keeping children safe online in themselves.

In fact, content is just one of the potential risks facing children online.

At Childnet we call these risks the “four Cs” – Content, Contact, Conduct and Commercialism; the strength of filtering tools lie predominantly in the Content area, rather than the other three Cs.

The other potential risks include:

  • Contact: potential contact from someone online who may wish to bully or abuse
  • Conduct: children may be at risk because of their own and other’s online behaviour, such as the sharing of personal information, and
  • Commercialism: children’s privacy can be placed at risk by commercial marketing and data collection companies and the nature of online advertising

Parental support is paramount

When it comes to internet safety, research tells us the best outcomes for children come from parental engagement and support.

LSE research into this topic concluded that, “Cynicism that what parents do is not valued, or that children will always evade parental guidance, is ungrounded.”

In fact, the researchers found, parents being parents online as well as offline and making sure their children know how to stay safe, be responsible and to respect others online makes a big impact on behaviour.

The best steps taken by parents appeared to be talking to their children about staying safe online and making sure they knew that they could ask for help if they needed it.

In fact, the researchers found that technical mediation (i.e. filtering) alone has no significant impact on children between 9 and 14 years old and was associated with more harm for 15 and 16 year olds.

The message is that parental controls work in addition to parental engagement, and not instead of it.

Harmful content

Having said that, potentially harmful online content is a potential risk children and young people online have to face.

In a survey we carried out with 24,000 children and young people for 2013’s Safer Internet Day, 22% of 7-11s and 21% of 11-19s told us that seeing unpleasant or hurtful things stops them from enjoying their time on the internet.

Other forms of media attempt to protect children from being exposed to age-inappropriate images and material, with measures such as film classification, the top shelf for magazines, and the watershed on TV.

Games are rated based on their content and features and carry age classifications. The Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed games, for example, are for over 18s.

If a child is an avid gamer, it is important to be aware of the types of games they are playing, and there is guidance available on what is and is not age-appropriate.

So what about the Internet?

Since we found in 2015 that 78% of 11-16s use YouTube every week, age ratings have been introduced on some videos posted there and on Vevo.

But there still isn’t a widely recognised online equivalent of the “top shelf”, so filtering technology and parental controls can help reduce the chances of children coming across age-inappropriate content.

Filtering the internet

Mobile phones have parental controls. All the mobile operators in the UK provide parental controls for free to their users, and most have these set up by default. This can help prevent the phone being able to access age-inappropriate content on the internet.

Parents who aren’t sure where they stand can contact their mobile operator or visit the safety pages on their website.

The big four domestic Internet Service Providers in the UK – BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media – all provide parental controls for free to their customers.

Sky courted some controversy by announcing these would be switched on by default for all new customers, and for existing customers who ignored prompts to check their settings themselves, from summer 2016.

Customers with the other big ISPs will need to set up the parental controls themselves. We have worked with these ISPs to help them create videos which are very short and very clear, explaining where users can go to get these parental controls and how to set them up, available here.

There’s more information on the differences between the services in this Choose article.

In terms of the content they do and don’t block, improvements have been made over the years, but the challenges of overblocking and underblocking still remain.

All four of the biggest ISP now provide network level filters, with the advantage we only need to set them up once to cover all devices that access the home wireless (this was pioneered by TalkTalk).

There is the disadvantage of not being able to set profiles for individual users, so no possibility of differentiating settings for teenage or very young children.

However, there is the clear advantage of ease of use, setting the filter up once rather than installing something on every device, and there is flexibility to adjust filtering depending on the time of day or week, and to add or remove particular sites from the blocked list.

There are discussions about automatic default for public wi-fi access, and progress is being made in this area; some public wi-fi providers such as The Cloud (owned by BSkyB) already use automatic filtering.

Filtering gadgets

There are also parental controls available on devices.

This is true for games consoles as well as tablets and smart phones. We have some information on some of these in our Parents’ Guide to Technology – but also remember to make parental controls a part of the conversation in store when purchasing technology for children.

There are also settings available on some online services, such as Google Safesearch, YouTube Safety Mode, and the BBC iPlayer Parental Guidance lock.

The limits of filtering

So, to sum up, there are tools available, often free of charge, for parents to help keep their children safe online.

However, they require parents to set them up or to check their status regularly, and they work best with parental engagement and support.

Learn how to manage parental controls on iPhones, Androids, gaming systems, and every device in between to ensure anything your kid gets her hands on is safe.

Despite the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation to select and view online content together with your children, the explosion of internet-connected devices has made it a challenge to monitor and limit screen-time habits. Kids ages 9 and younger spend 3.6 hours a day using a screen, according to a survey of 500 moms by Parents and Asurion, a cell-phone-insurance provider that also offers tech expertise.

With all that screen time, three out of five parents worry about exposure or access to inappropriate content, and 40 percent fear that strangers might contact their kids online. Still, most haven’t set up Wi-Fi parental controls or time limits on their kids’ devices (maybe because the process is so daunting!).

We’ll cut through the confusion here and make you Genius-Bar smart (or close to it!).

How to Set Parental Controls

Chances are your devices already include robust protection features. The rub: You need to activate (and in some cases download) them. Here’s how to do it on the most popular devices:

Android Parental Controls

Features: You can restrict apps, games, movies, and TV your child tries to download from the Google Play Store.

Limits/Tracking: You need to download the Family Link app, then create a Google account for your child. From there, select your child’s name and tap the Daily limits card, then select Edit limits and follow the instructions. Your kid will get a notification when time is almost up and the device is about to be locked. You can also keep track of your child’s device’s location when it’s turned on.

Can You Set Up Separate Accounts? Yes, you can create an account for each kid in Family Link.

Best For: Any age. For an older kid, download a third-party app like ShieldMyTeen (free) to filter mature content.

Where To Start: Open the Play Store app. From the top left Menu, choose Settings, then turn Parental controls. Here you’ll select a PIN so that only people who know the PIN can change the parental control settings. Next, select the type of content you want to filter and how you want to restrict access.

Keep in Mind: Make sure your device works with Google Play (some lower-end models don’t) so you can download mainstream apps.

Amazon Fire Parental Controls

Features: FreeTime (built into every device) restricts purchases, bans ads, and allows access only to content you approve.

Limits/Tracking: Yes. You can set time restrictions for various activities and prevent the playing of games or videos until your child, say, reads for a set amount of time.

Can You Set Up Separate Accounts? Yes, you can create two password-protected adult accounts and four child accounts; it’s easy for you to toggle between them.

Best For: Kids 8 and under. FreeTime is too limiting for older kids. However, Amazon’s two-year “worry-free guarantee” promises a replacement if your child drops or breaks the Fire Kids Edition, a huge plus.

Where To Start: Open Settings > Parental Controls > tap the switch next to Parental Controls > enter a password and hit “Finish”

Keep in Mind: Your child’s device can be used as a regular Fire tablet by switching to the adult setting on the FreeTime profile

iOS Parental Controls

Features: Use Screen Time to restrict the use of built-in apps and block iTunes and app store purchases such as movies, music, and TV with specific ratings. You can also limit your child’s browsing to sites you specify.

Limits/Tracking: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility. Under Learning, select Guided Access > tap Time Limits. Once that’s enabled, you can set time limits on any app by clicking the Home button three times in a row when the app is open.

Can You Set Up Separate Accounts? Unless you’re using a shared iPad purchased for an educational setting, there’s no simple solution for multiple user profiles on one device.

Best For: Kids 6 and older who are ready for their own device.

Where To Start: Go to Settings > Screen Time and create a passcode your kids don’t know.

Keep in Mind: Unless you hide your own past purchases by logging into iTunes, your child will be able to see every app, song, and movie you buy.

Windows 10 Parental Controls

Features: Microsoft family lets you filter websites, block apps, games, and other media, and regulate your child’s ability to make Microsoft Store purchases.

Limits/Tracking: Yes. You can set screen-time limits for individual user sessions.

Can You Set Up Separate Accounts? Yes.

Best For: Kids over 8 who use an Xbox One or Windows 10 tablet.

Where To Start: Set restrictions via or on Xbox One.

Keep in Mind: You’ll have to set up an online Microsoft account and e-mail address for your child.

Tips for Safe Internet Browsing by Age

How much freedom should you give your child on the web? Follow these guidelines from Caroline Knorr, senior parenting editor at Common Sense Media.

For Kids Under 5: Build a “white list.” Choose a handful of sites you’re comfortable with, and plug them into the device your child uses. As he gets older and needs greater access, simply add to the list.

For Kids 5 to 8: Use a kid-friendly browser. Disable the browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.) on your child’s device by going to Settings. Then replace it with a kid-friendly one that you download from the app store. Consider Mobicip (free), which lets her access only sites it identifies as safe. Mobicip offers three filtering levels—strict, moderate, and mature—and lets you block specific domains, website categories, and keywords.

For 9 and Up: Go with Google SafeSearch. Paired with the controls built into your operating system and browser, this search engine does an effective job of filtering explicit images and content. On a computer, go to the preferences section in Google, click “Turn on SafeSearch” and then “Lock SafeSearch.” On a mobile device, go to Google, click “Settings,” then select “Search settings” and choose “Filter explicit results.” Repeat for each browser.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

(Pocket-lint) – We’re suckers for cute marketing videos, and we’ve just spotted a new one for what looks to be a fancy-yet-creepy router called Luma.

Let’s back up for a second and talk about Wi-Fi. For years, we’ve all bought a single Wi-Fi router, stuck it in our home (like under our desks), and just hoped that it could blanket every inch of our homes with internet connectvitity. But that’s hardly ever the case. Businesses, on the other hand, put several Wi-Fi access points around their buildings, so that you can easily and always access the internet while at work, for instance.

Well, Luma wants to make what was previously only found at businesses and make it available in your home. The idea is that you can buy multiple Luma routers (they’re sold in a three-pack), place them throughout your house, and they will work together to form a single network. Luma has branded this “surround Wi-Fi”, but it’s really a mesh network, which is what businesses use.

Each Luma has two dual-band radios on 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands using 802.11ac Wave 2. Now, beyond basic internet-delivery stuff, the Luma is smart in that it can tell you what every device on your network is doing. And in real-time. So, you’ll be able to see when your kids are on Facebook or YouTube, though you won’t be able to see the exact contents of the page they are viewing, such as a message or video. Still creepy.

You’ll also be able to remotely control Luma, so you can block users from accessing your network, as well as restrict entire sites (like limit kids from viewing “R”-level sites to just viewing “G”-level sites), and you can stop hackers, because Luma is always monitoring for viruses or things trying to infiltrate your network. Watch Luma’s video below to see what else it can do.

As we mentioned earlier, it’s a pretty cute video, in which an “uncle” talks to you about how Luma works/how he uses it to prevent his visiting nephew from viewing or doing certain stuff online. If any of this interests you, pre-orders start today, with shipments kicking off next spring.

For the next 30 days, a single router costs $99, while the three-pack is $249. After that, they’ll cost $199 and $499, respectively. Ouch.

Also, initially, Luma will only be available in the US and Canada.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

Since Luma was founded in 2014, it has since been known for selling Wi-Fi solutions. Specifically, they sell a WiFi router that uses mesh networking technology to deliver consistent signals past the limit of the host router to a specific range. This also is built with a corresponding mobile app for more convenient and secured control over the network and your kid’s devices using the parental controls.

Knowing how the IoT (Internet of Things) has taken over the internet by storm, they aim to build something that can provide everyone with the cybersecurity they need without the need of a CISO or a Chief Information Security Officer. And this is what led to the birth of the Luma WiFi router.

In this article, we’ll cover the bits and pieces of the Luma WiFi router, it’s specs, and exactly how can this piece of technology reshape the future of internet browsing at home.

What is Luma?

In a nutshell, Luma WiFi is designed to extend the limits of your router’s coverage. By adding range extenders or nodes to the end-points of the WiFi coverage, you extend the coverage of the WiFi signal without compromising the speed and performance of your internet connection.

How effective are luma’s parental controls

According to Luma, this type of “intelligent” system they’re using was only available to large companies before. But now, they’re making it available to household consumers for everyone to enjoy. To give you a general idea of its benefits, here they are:

  • Comes with a hacker protection
  • Full control over the devices connected to the network and even have an idea what kind of data is flowing through
  • Allows you to see what’s happening on each device in real-time
  • Extensive parental control feature to restrict access for specific users and even pausing the internet and adding limits
  • Can be accessed via the Luma app (available on iOS and Android)

How Users Welcomed Luma

With the new mesh technology and outstanding security features Luma had offered to consumers, it has easily become everybody’s favorite. But this didn’t mean it’s for everyone even though this was one of the cheaper mesh-based networking solutions on the market.

See, Luma’s capabilities and features are perfect for users living in big properties and those who are looking for a mesh router that’s easy to install, easy to maintain, and easy to expand when there’s a need to. Users looking to control their children’s devices will also find Luma’s outstanding security feature worth investing in.

But then again, since it’s one of the cheaper options in the market, it doesn’t offer as many customization options and features as other premium-grade mesh routers on the market (more of this below).
