If you are a Spotify subscriber who has decided to give other music-subscription services a try, you can end your Premium subscription at any time, which reverts your account back to the free service when the current subscription period runs out.

But if you’re positive that you won’t be coming back at all, you might be considering closing your Spotify account.

In this post, we’re going to lay out the steps involved in permanently deleting accounts on Spotify.

Spotify’s mobile apps don’t provide the option to delete accounts and the previously available account deletion links on the webpage are no longer available. Instead, you now must contact Spotify Support and send them an account deletion request via email.

Step 6: Click the Send Question button to send your query to Spotify in the form of an email message using your email address on file.

Step 7: You will receive an auto-response directing you back to the Spotify Community. Don’t fret: just reply directly to that email with a request to delete your account and your message will reach one of Spotify’s human agents, who will take it from there.

Step 8: You might need to follow up on that email with any information necessary to confirm your identity, like your date of birth. It might be a good idea to whitelist spotify.com so that emails from support staff don’t get classed as spam.

Step 9: Spotify will issue an email within a few days to confirm that your account has been successfully deleted. Now you can uninstall Spotify from your laptop, desktop, tablets and mobile devices.

Closing your account will prevent you from accessing any of the information stored on it, including your custom playlists and offline songs. You also won’t be able to sign up again for Spotify with the same user name.

If you want to get the low down on everything you need to know about deleting Spotify, or cancelling your Spotify subscription, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll break down:

Let’s get started with the most important things you should know before you delete or cancel Spotify.

What you need to know before deleting your Spotify account

There are many downsides to actually deleting Spotify, and very few upsides – so think carefully before you make this decision. All of the following will apply if you delete your Spotify account:

You can’t ever use your username on Spotify again – even if you sign up in the future, that username won’t be available anymore.

How to delete your spotify account

  • You will lose your playlists – there is no way to recover this saved information.
  • You will lose followers – if you have any followers, they will be gone forever.
  • You will lose everything in library – any saved songs won’t be kept for you.
  • They have a free forever plan – a plan you never have to pay for, but it saves all of the above information, so there’s little upside to actually deleting your account, even if you cancel your subscription.
  • You have to wait to get the student discount again – if you signed up using the student discount, you need to wait 12 months to apply for it again (you can sign up again, but you won’t get the discount).
  • It is impossible to delete Spotify on mobile – you must do it in a web browser at Spotify.com.
  • You must cancel first before deleting – if you have a paid subscription to Spotify, you must cancel that first and then delete your account.
  • The only way to permanently delete the account is to contact customer service – there is no button you can tap or click to actually close your account – all you can do yourself is delete the app on your mobile device – but it won’t close your account.
  • Remember that once you actually delete Spotify, you can’t get any of your Spotify features and saved settings back – even if you sign up for it again immediately, 5 minutes later. You can however just end your subscription and stop paying rather than closing your account, which we recommend you do. However, we’ll show you how to do both below.

Don’t listen to Spotify much anymore? Here’s how you can cut the cord.

Spotify is one of the top music streaming services, offering free and paid options and providing access to more than 30 million songs online.

For $9.99 a month, Premium adds some nice bells and whistles. But even the freebie gives you the opportunity to search for and play your favorite tunes. That sounds great, but maybe you don’t use it enough to justify the monthly cost. Perhaps you’ve switched to a rival service like Apple Music. Whatever the reason, you can remove your ties to Spotify.

First, let’s take a quick look at Spotify. You can download it for Windows, the Mac, the iPhone or iPad, and Android devices. After you’ve set up your account, launch Spotify on your device. You can listen to online radio stations of different genres. You can create and discover playlists based on your musical tastes. And best of all, you can track down your favorite tunes and add them to your own playlists.

The free version limits you to shuffle play, so you have no control over the order in which your songs play. The paid Premium version adds in high-quality audio, unlimited skips, an ad-free experience, the option to play any tune in your collection, and a way to listen to music offline. You can also opt for a family account to the tune of $14.99 a month. Still want to cancel? No problem.

    Deleting a Free Account

First surf to the Spotify website and click on the Log in link. Enter your account credentials. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the About link.

At the About Us page, click on the Contact Us link in the Customer Service section. At the Contact Spotify page, click on the Account category.

At the next page, click on the topic for “I want to close my Spotify account permanently.” At the next page to Permanently Close Account, click Close Account.

At the “We’re sad you want to leave us” page, click on the Close Account button.

Spotify confirms the account you wish to close. Click on the Continue button.

Spotify tries one last time to keep your account alive, telling you that you’ll lose your username, playlists, and other features. If you’re still determined, click on the checkbox for “I understand, and still want to close my account” and then click Continue.

As your final step, you have to click on a button to “Close My Account” in a verification message sent to your email address. After you do that, you’ve finally broken up with Spotify.

    Cancel Spotify Premium

Okay, now let’s go over the process for cancelling a paid Spotify subscription. Log into to Spotify. Click on your name in the upper-right corner and click on the link for Account.

At the Account page, click on the link for Subscription.

At the Subscription and Payment Info page, click on the link to cancel your subscription.

At the “Can we help?” page, Spotify asks why you want to cancel your subscription. Click on the appropriate response and then click Continue. Spotify displays another page in response to the reason you selected. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link to Cancel My Subscription.

At the next page, enter your password and click on the link to Cancel My Subscription.

Your paid subscription is finally cancelled, and your account automatically reverts to the free version of Spotify. Of course, Spotify reminds you that you can always renew your paid subscription should you change your mind.

If you’re in the mood to cancel more services, check out:

Cancel your Premium plan any time with these steps.

    1. Log in to your account page.
    2. Under Your plan, click CHANGE PLAN.
    3. Scroll to Spotify Free and click CANCEL PREMIUM.
    4. Continue through to the confirmation message.

Your account page now shows the date your plan will change to Spotify Free. You can continue to use Premium features until then.

When plan changes to Spotify Free, you can still log in, play tunes, and access all your saved music and playlists.

    Didn’t work?

This means you subscribed with another company (e.g. your mobile provider, or with iTunes).

Since they manage the subscription, you need to cancel with them. You can find their details on your account page.

This means there’s no Premium plan to cancel, and the account doesn’t have payment info associated with it.

If you’re being charged, you likely have Premium on a different account. This guide will help you find and cancel it.

If you cancel around your usual billing date, your next payment may have already been taken.

If your account page shows a date when your plan will change to Spotify Free, you’ve successfully cancelled and won’t be charged again. If it doesn’t show this, try the cancel steps again making sure you reach the confirmation message.

Otherwise, you may have Premium on another account. This guide will help you find and cancel it.

If you subscribed through another company (for example your mobile or broadband company), you need to contact that company for help.

You can also cancel by completing this form and sending it to Spotify.
