How to find your lost airpods

How to find your lost airpods

Apple has a “Find My AirPods” tool that lets you view their location on a map. You can even make your AirPods play a surprisingly loud beeping sound if they’re powered on.

This feature is part of Apple’s “Find My iPhone” tool, which also allows you to find lost iPads and Macs. You can access it in two ways: by using the Find My iPhone app on an iPhone or iPad, or by signing into the iCloud.com/find website on a PC or Mac.

Launch the app or visit the website, and then sign in with your Apple ID. If your AirPods were paired with an iPhone or iPad associated with your Apple ID, they’ll appear in the list under “My Devices.”

How to find your lost airpodsHow to find your lost airpods

If your AirPods are powered on, they’ll appear as “Online” here. AirPods only appear as online if they’re in range of your iPhone or iPad, if they’re out of the case, and if they have battery power. If the AirPods are out of range of your device, are in the AirPod case, or are out of battery power, they’ll appear as “Offline” instead.

If your AirPods are offline for whatever reason, you can tap them and you may be able to see their last known location. This gives you an idea of the last place you used your AirPods, which is a good place to start looking for them. In some cases, you won’t be able to see their last known location at all and you’ll just see an image of AirPods over a gray map of the world.

Remember that the last known location isn’t a bulletproof feature. For example, let’s say you last used your AirPods at your office. Before heading home, you put the AirPods in their charging case and took it with you. If you drop your AirPods on the street on your way home, their “last known location” will still be your office because that’s the last place they were online and connected to your phone.

How to find your lost airpodsHow to find your lost airpods

If your AirPods appear to be online, you can tap them in the list and view their location on a map. This will be near your iPhone or iPad, of course. Tap the “Play Sound” button to play a very loud beeping sound on each AirPod. This helps you find the AirPods if you’ve lost them somewhere nearby. The beep sounds louder than you’d expect it to be coming from the tiny AirPods, and will increase in volume as it plays.

Warning: Ensure you don’t have the AirPods in your ears when you tap this button. For example, if you’re looking for a single lost AirPod and still have the other one in your ear, remove it before continuing. The loud sound could damage your hearing.

You can tap the “Mute Left” and “Mute Right” buttons here to mute an AirPod after you’ve found it, which makes the second one easier to pinpoint. Tap “Stop Playing” to stop the sound when you’ve found your AirPods.

How to find your lost airpodsHow to find your lost airpods

It’s harder to find lost AirPods than a lost iPhone. While iPhones are always online (unless they’re turned off), AirPods are dependent on your iPhone or iPad and don’t communicate when they’re in their case. If you do lose your AirPods, be sure to pull out the Find My iPhone app and try playing a sound on them as soon as possible to ensure you can find them before they lose battery power.

AirPods provide durable, true wireless sound for all your Bluetooth devices, but they’re also tiny sticks that sit in your ears — which means accidents can happen. Many people know the feeling of reaching up and suddenly realizing they only have one AirPod left in their ears, and no idea what happen to the other.

If a cursory search in the area doesn’t reveal the missing AirPod, don’t panic! Apple has a service designed just for these times. We’ll show you exactly what to do to find your missing AirPod or AirPod Pro.

Step 1: Open the Find My app

How to find your lost airpods

The latest versions of iOS have a native app called Find My, which is a combination of the older Find My Phone app and a few other services, including one that allows you to track down your AirPods. Start by opening the Find My app. Sign in with your Apple ID, if necessary.

You can also access your browser and go to iCloud.com to find the web version of the service, but Find My is easier to use and helps you stay mobile as you continue your search, so we recommend that option.

If you’ve never used Find My before for any device, there’s a chance it won’t be able to help you find your AirPods. If you get a new Apple device, it’s a good idea to log into Find My to make sure it shows up!

Step 2: Locate your AirPods on the map

How to find your lost airpods

The Find My screen should display a map and a tools window that is by default set to People. Select Devices instead, and a list will pop up for all your signed-in devices and where they are.

Take a look at the icons on the map, and look for the AirPods icon. The map isn’t always accurate, but it may be accurate enough for you to realize where you left an AirPod so you can find it. This may be useful if you lost your AirPod on a commute, for example, or you aren’t sure if you left one at the gym or at work. If the map’s not helping, locate your AirPods on the list of devices and select for more options.

What happens if your AirPod battery is totally dead? Well, the map may not be of much help, but it may be able to show you the last place your AirPods were detected, which is a good starting point for finding them again.

Step 3: Play a chime to find the missing AirPod

How to find your lost airpods

With the AirPods selected, you will see new options including one that says Play Sound. This will make the unattended AirPods start chiming if they aren’t in your case. Before you begin, make sure you’re not still wearing your other AirPod (the chime can be loud), then select the Play Sound option and wait a moment.

Your AirPod should now start beeping with growing volume for around two minutes. This should enable you to find where you’ve left it around the house. Once you’ve located the AirPod, you can choose Stop Sound to end the playing. You will also see an option to switch the sound between either AirPod depending on the one that you have lost, or if you’ve lost both in different locations.

Site note: At this point, a certain number of people will soon discover that their dog ate their AirPod. If this is the case, don’t panic, just give your vet a call. For large dogs, the AirPod will probably pass naturally without much of a problem. It’s unlikely to work again, but there are reports that AirPods have been swallowed, pooped out, and remained functional in the past. If a small dog ate the AirPod, you may need to take additional steps, and your vet can help you out here.

When the AirPods are in your case

You’ll notice there’s no option to play a sound to find your AirPods case, just the AirPods themselves. You can’t make the case chime, there’s no sound feature on it. However, you may still be able to use the map to find the location of the case if you have lost it.

Additionally, if your AirPods are inside the charging case and the case itself is lost, then you probably can’t make the AirPods themselves chime, either: The Make a Sound feature will just say “Pending” instead of working. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get any more information about the exact location of the case, so it’s time to play detective.

Replacing AirPods

How to find your lost airpods

If the worst happens, you won’t be able to find your missing AirPod, or you’ll discover that it’s beyond help. The question every AirPods owner then has is, “Can I replace just one AirPod?”

The answer is yes! Apple offers services for AirPod repair and replacement, with a variety of different packages available. A normal AirPod — assuming you are out of warranty — will cost you $69 to replace. An AirPod Pro will cost you $89 to replace. This is pricey but less expensive than replacing both AirPods, at which point it’s probably better to think about getting a new set of AirPods entirely. If you do have a warranty, the price goes down to only $30 to replace an AirPod of either model.

Apple has to take care of this replacement itself, so give your nearest Apple Store a call and let them know what you have in mind so they can begin the process.

The Find My app (a combination of the former Find My Friends and Find My iPhone features in iOS 13 or later) allows users to keep track of all of their Apple devices and accessories, especially if they go missing or are stolen.

AirPods are notoriously tricky to keep track of, but they can be found using both the Find My app and your iCloud account. If you’ve lost your iPhone and AirPods and don’t have access to the Find My app, you can access the feature through a browser window using your iCloud credentials.

Note that you’ll need to have enabled Find My location tracking on your Apple devices prior to losing them in order to locate them using the service.

How to track AirPods using the Find My app on iPhone

1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone.

2. At the bottom, select the “Devices” tab.

3. Scroll through the list of devices and select the name of your AirPods.

4. After a brief moment, the location of where the AirPods were last connected should appear. The description may read “No location” if your AirPods are offline or have a dead battery.

5. If you are having a hard time locating your AirPods, you can select the “Play Sound” icon. Your AirPods should play a distinct sound that will gradually get louder. The sound will stop playing after two minutes, or until you find your AirPods and connect them with your device.

6. Find My can only locate one AirPod at a time. Once you’ve found the first one, put it back in the case and refresh the app by closing it and opening it again.

How to track AirPods using iCloud

1. Go to the iCloud website on a web browser.

2. Sign in using your credentials.

3. Select the “Find iPhone” icon at the bottom right of the page.

4. At the top, click “All Devices” and in the dropdown menu, find and select the name of your AirPods.

5. If you are within reach, select “Play Sound” to help locate your AirPods.

If you always carry your AirPods Pro everywhere you go, it is quite easy to misplace or lose them. What’s worse than losing your AirPods Pro is if you end up losing the carrying case. You might think how is it possible for someone to lose the carrying case of their AirPods Pro until it happens with you. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have lost your AirPods Pro or its charging case, here’s what you can do to try and find them.

Thanks to Find My integration, you should not lose hope about not finding your AirPods Pro if you lose them. You do not need to manually enable Find My tracking for your AirPods Pro as well since the feature is automatically enabled when you pair the earbuds with your iPhone. In the uneventful scenario that you do not find your AirPods Pro, you can always buy a replacement unit from Apple by paying $89. That’s the price of just one ear unit though, so if you lose both, you will have to shell out nearly $200. Before that though, you can try using Apple’s excellent Find My app to track your lost or stolen AirPods Pro.

Remember that the AirPods Pro themselves do not feature any kind of internet connectivity and they rely on the iPhone or other Apple devices they are paired with to report their location. In case you lose you are in an area with a patchy network connection, it is possible that the AirPods Pro will not be able to report an accurate location. Since the Find My app is also available on the Mac, you can follow the same steps below on your Mac to track your stolen or lost AirPods Pro.

How to Find Lost AirPods Pro or AirPods Pro Case

Using the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, you can play a sound to track your lost or stolen AirPods Pro. This method only works if your AirPods Pro is not in the charging case though. Follow the steps below to track your lost AirPods Pro using the Find My app.

Step 1: Open the Find my app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Make sure that you are logged into the account using the same iCloud account as the one on your iPhone that’s paired to your AirPods Pro.

Step 2: From the list of devices, select your AirPods Pro. The last known location of the earbuds will then be displayed on the map. This will be the location the AirPods were last connected to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch.

Step 3: A green dot near your AirPods Pro means that the device has been located and is currently online. You can then tap on the Play Sound button which will lead to your AirPods playing a loud tone so that you can find them. The sound’s volume will increase gradually and they are not going to be super loud like your iPhone or iPad so you might have to listen a bit carefully in a crowded place. This sound will play for two minutes before it turns off automatically.

If you lose both your AirPod Pro earbuds, Find My app will only show the location of one at a time. In such situations, find the AirPod Pro that is being shown in the map, put it back in the charging case, and then check the Find My app again as it will show the location for the other unit.

If your lost AirPods Pro is a bit far from your current location, you will get an option to navigate to them as well.

How to Find AirPods Pro or AirPods Pro Case If They Are Offline

If your AirPods Pro runs out of battery, are offline, or in the charging case, then finding them becomes a bit difficult. You can still use the Find My app to find the last known location of your AirPods Pro and then try to find it from there.

Step 1: Open the Find My app on your iPhone and select AirPods Pro from the list of devices.

Step 2: Since your AirPods Pro are offline, they will show a grey dot but you can still see their last location on the map. You can then try finding your lost AirPods Pro from there manually.

Since the AirPods Pro are offline, you will not be able to play a sound on them. Instead, you will get a “Sound Pending” message and receive a notification whenever they connect to a paired device.

In case you are still not able to find your lost AirPods Pro, your only option is to buy a replacement unit for $89. You can always use the other AirPods Pro that you still have independently but that won’t really offer an ideal user experience.

I went to bed listening to my Airpods last night. When I woke up – I could only find one. I opened up Find my iPhone and when I click Play Sound, only my right airpod will ring. No matter what I do, I cannot get the right airpod to ring. The find my iPhone app won’t let me mute only one, the right one i have; those options are grayed out.

The map is also no use because I know for a fact that both Airpods are in my room. Why is it that only one of them will ring? What can I do?

I would guess the reason the other one is not showing up is because it is now out of charge, once they run out of charge they will not show up on find my iPhone

Refresh the map.

Next to each device, you see a colored dot that tells you the device’s status.

A blue dot shows the device that you’re using to look for your missing AirPods.

A green dot lets you know that your AirPods are online. That means you can play a sound or get directions to find them.

A gray dot means your AirPods are off, out of battery, in their case, or out of range. You might see the last known location.

If your AirPods are separated from each other, you see only one location at a time on the map. Find the AirPod that you see on the map and put it in its case. Then refresh the map and find the other one.

How to find your lost airpods

If your AirPods are near any of your Apple devices and connected to Bluetooth, you can play a sound to help you find them from iCloud.com or the Find My iPhone app. Your AirPods play a sound that gets gradually louder for two minutes, or until you tell them to stop.

  1. Go to Actions > Play Sound.
  2. If your AirPods are separated, choose Mute Left or Mute Right to find one at a time.
  3. When you find your AirPods, tap or click Stop Playing.

Make sure that you remove the AirPods from your ears before you play a sound.

If your AirPods are offline

If you didn’t turn on Find My iPhone before your AirPods went missing, you can’t use it to locate your device. If you see a gray dot next to your AirPods on the map, you can’t play a sound to find them but you can still get directions to the location where they were last connected. If your AirPods do come back online, you’ll get a notification on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you use them with.

Find My iPhone is the only way that you can track or locate a lost or missing device. There is no other Apple service that can find, track, or otherwise flag your device for you.

How to find lost Bluetooth headphones is a recurring problem among music or audiobooks lovers on the go and other Sunday morning joggers.

You were quietly jogging in the morning listening to Lady Gaga’s latest hit (or whatever, you’re free to listen to anything after all…), when suddenly you feel that something is missing.

You put your hands to your ears and… there’s nothing! You’ve lost your Bluetooth headphones!

Arghh… Don’t panic, we are here to help you…

How to Find Lost Bluetooth Headphones: We Are Here to Help You!

If your Bluetooth headset was turned on when you lost it, chances are you can locate it with a dedicated application. Provided, of course, that your headset battery isn’t dead…

What Is a Bluetooth Scanning App?

This type of application is available for Android and iOS devices. It is an app that will display all nearby Bluetooth devices and show you the strength of the transmitted Bluetooth signal. You will then be able to judge the proximity of your lost Bluetooth headsets.

If you have a smartphone running Android, try this app: Bluetooth Finder. This application is also available for phones running Windows.

For the lucky owners of a device running iOS, try this: Bluetooth Smart Scanner.

Once this application (a bit magical, I must admit) is activated, it’s time to hunt for lost Bluetooth headsets!

Start Hunting for Lost Bluetooth Earbuds!

After making sure that the Bluetooth is enabled on your phone (check to see if the Bluetooth logo appears in the top right corner of your smartphone or tablet screen), launch the app and look at the list of devices displayed. Usually, the device name is displayed in full text to help you locate it more easily.

Then look at the signal strength of the lost device: the stronger the device, the closer you are to it. As a reminder, the signal strength is expressed in decibel-milliwatts (dBm). The larger the number (or the closer the number is to zero, in the case of a negative number), the stronger the transmitted signal is. For example, -10dBm is a stronger signal than -100 dBm.

So, the closer you get to your headphones, the higher the number has to go. After a while, you should be able to locate your beloved Bluetooth headsets.

What do I do if I lost my AirPods?

The first thing you should do when you lost your AirPods is to check it on it on Find my iPhone app,

How to find your lost airpods

You’re going to forget them somewhere, some time, here’s how to hopefully get them back whether you’ve dropped them behind the couch, or left them at work.

Face it, they are tiny. Whether you have the original AirPods, the second generation, or the AirPods Pro, these things are very small — and extremely easy to misplace. They can also be stolen, but if yours are and you follow our instructions to see where they’ve got to, hang on a moment.

This is about what to do when you know you just put them down somewhere. Or you had them this morning. It’s not for when you’ve seen someone snatch them from your bag and run off before the cops could get here.

Preventative medicine

Not to spoil anything or get ahead of ourselves, but we’re going to tell you to use Apple’s Find My app, and that is great — if you’ve set it up in advance. This is an area where Apple’s drive to be simple, and to help us all, makes things confusing.

Apple will automatically have switched on the ability to use Find My to locate your AirPods, but only if you have previously chosen to switch it on for your iPhone.

How to find your lost airpods

The good news is that Apple also prompts you to do that when you were first setting up your iPhone.

There’s a decent but not perfect chance that your AirPods are ready to be found. If you haven’t let your iPhone be set up for this, though, you’re going to have to rely on the kindness of strangers.

Or if you’re presciently reading this ahead of losing your AirPods, do this on your iPhone.

How to turn on Find My on the iPhone

  • Open Settings and tap on your name
  • Choose Find My
  • Tap on Find My iPhone
  • Turn on Find My iPhone
  • Turn on Enable Offline Finding
  • Turn of Send Last Location

That last one is particularly useful. Everything else is for helping you find your device, but that one sends the location to Apple instead of you. Specifically, it sends it when your device’s battery is about to quit on you.

It does that so when you try the Find My app, Apple can at least show you where the device last was, even if it can’t show you were it is now.

How to find lost AirPods from your iPhone

The moment you realise your AirPods are gone, open the Find My app. In moments, you will see a map or a satellite image of the area around you, and a text list of all your devices.

If you’re a long time Apple user, that could be quite a list. Each entry has an image of the device, the name you’ve given it, plus location information.

That might be a specific street address, right down to the apartment number, if that’s your home or somewhere in your contacts. Failing that, it will be the town or district, which is less useful but at least tells you that you left the AirPods at home this morning.

There’s also an indicator of how far away the device is, with either a measurement in miles or, much more preferable for your anxiety levels, the words “With You.”

If that’s all there is, then the device has just been located right now. Apple has got its location now and is reporting it to you.

How to find your lost airpods

As well as the geographic area, there may also be a time. This will be the last time that the devices were online.

There is one final possibility, which we hope you don’t see. Find My may just have to report “No location found.”

How to play a sound on AirPods to help find them

It’s one thing for Apple to tell you where they are, it’s another for you to actually get them back. While the map in Find My will zero you in on the right region, there is one more thing it can do. Find My can also make your AirPods play a sound.

You won’t be surprised to learn that it’s not the loudest sound in the world. It’s loud enough that you will hear it when you’re not wearing the AirPods, though. And it’s loud enough that if a thief is wearing your AirPods, you should look for the person wincing in pain right now.

Even though the sound is quiet, when your AirPods are somewhere else in the office, Find My keeps that sound going until you stop it.

If the AirPods are in their case and so not connected to anything, Find My will show the sound as Pending. As soon as the AirPods case is opened, the sound will play.

Nicely, it also lets you choose to play the sound only from the left or only from the right AirPod. So if you’ve misplaced one, the sound coming from the other doesn’t mask where your lost AirPod is.

How to locate your AirPods on a Mac

You can do all of this equally easily on a Mac.

Go to the iCloud website on your Mac and log in using the same Apple ID that the AirPods are connected to. Then choose Find iPhone — Apple hasn’t updated the iCloud app to show that it finds any device.

How to find your lost airpods

You’ll get the same map, the same location data, and the same ability to play a sound through the AirPods.

Theory and practice

All of this sounds great in theory. In practice, it is usually just about exactly as great as it sounds. We have been saved by it from our absentmindedness many, many times. It has also, though, given us reason to gulp. Such as when the last location of our AirPods was shown on the map to be on a street a mile away.

That was clearly using the information from Send Last Location, and we’d been wearing the AirPods as we walked down that street. Yet we’d worn them all the way home, too, and their battery was fine.

The best we can rationalize is that we were walking through an area with poor cell signal, so the internet access was spotty. This mile-away location did at least, though, make us remember for sure that we had been wearing them, and we were able to check the rest of the route.

Of course, we then found the AirPods on our living room table. So do use Apple’s Find My app, but check your furniture first.

How to find your lost airpods

There’s no getting around it: the AirPods are small. It’s what happens when you chop the cord off a set of in-ear buds; they don’t have much mass, and if you don’t remember to store them in their pillbox case, you may find yourself frantically searching for an earbud or two.

Thankfully, if you’ve accidentally misplaced one of your AirPods, iOS 10.3 and Apple’s Find My iPhone app will let you hunt it down as long as you’re within Bluetooth range.

To start, you’ll need both iOS 10.3 and the Find My iPhone app.

Note: This feature is primarily to locate individual missing AirPods earbuds — the AirPods case itself doesn’t have speakers, and the earbuds themselves won’t make a sound until they come within range of your iPhone.

  1. Open (or download, if you don’t yet have it) Find My iPhone.
  2. Sign in with your iCloud account.
  3. Tap on the entry for your AirPods.

Select Actions.

  • Press Play Sound.
  • Both earbuds will start making a triplicate chirp — quietly at first, then increasing in volume. If you’re trying to find just one of the buds, you can mute the left or right earbud to focus in on finding the other earbud.
  • Still can’t find your earbuds?

If your missing AirPods earbud is out of charge, you may be out of luck in locating it via the Find My iPhone app. That said, you can still go about finding it the old-fashioned way — back-tracking where you had them previously.

And if you’ve exhausted all other options, you can always pay a lost AirPods fee to Apple to get a new earbud — it’s just $69 per lost bud.
