Zoom doesn’t hold back when it comes to allowing users to join a meeting. The company provides several ways to join—even if you haven’t downloaded Zoom’s software. Here’s every way a user can enter a Zoom meeting.
How to Join a Zoom Meeting
For you to join a meeting in Zoom, the host will first have to set up the meeting. Once the host starts the session, the participants can then join. Alternatively, the host can enable an option that allows users to join before the host arrives, but the meeting will still have to be set up in advance.
Use the Zoom Application
If you already have Zoom installed on your device, you can join a meeting directly from the app using a meeting ID or personal link name sent to you by the host.
Open Zoom, and you’ll be prompted to sign in. You can (1) enter your email and password and then select “Sign In,” or (2) sign in with SSO, Google, or Facebook. Selecting Google or Facebook will bring you to its respective sign-in page. If you decide to sign in using SSO, you’ll need to know the company URL, which is usually .zoom.us.
Regardless of the sign-in method you choose, once that process is complete, you’ll be on the home page of the Zoom app. Here, select “Join.”
A new window will appear. In the first box, enter the meeting ID that was sent to you when you received the invitation via email. Alternatively, you can enter the personal link name if you happen to know it.
Below that, enter your display name, select if you would like to join the meeting with audio and video enabled, and then select the “Join” button.
You’ll now be in the meeting.
Use the Zoom Website
If you’re joining a meeting with another company, they will need to have registered a company URL with Zoom. This is generally .zoom.us, but check with the host to make sure.
Once you have the company URL, go to it in your browser of choice. The landing page will look different between companies, but the options available will mostly be the same.
Select the “Join” button.
You’ll now need to enter the meeting ID or personal link name you should have received from the host of the meeting. Do that, and then select “Join.”
You will now have joined the meeting.
Use the Email Link
When a host sends you an invitation, you’ll receive that invitation via email. The first link in the message is the “Join Zoom Meeting” link. Click that link.
Once selected, you’ll be brought to the Zoom meeting.
Call the Meeting
If you’d rather just use your phone to call the meeting, that’s an option, too. In the email invitation you received, you’ll see the teleconferencing number.
Call that number. When prompted, enter the meeting ID number (also available in the email invitation) using your dial pad. That’s all there is to it!

Joining a Zoom Meeting Anonymously
If you want to join a meeting on Zoom anonymously, join the meeting without logging in to your account. When you join the meeting as a guest, Zoom asks for your name. And you can enter any name you want. You can even become Wizard of the Oz, or Mr. X if you want.
But remember, if it’s a private meeting, the host might not let you in if they don’t recognize you.
If you’ve joined the meeting with your account, you can still change your name in a Zoom meeting. But your name will be first visible when you enter the meeting. And keep in mind that if the host has disabled the attendees’ privilege to rename themselves, you won’t be able to change your name in the meeting then.
How to Not Show your Face on Zoom and Stay Fully Anonymous
If you want to stay completely anonymous in the meeting, you can also turn off your video and audio. Click on the ‘Stop video’ and ‘Mute’ buttons on the meeting toolbar. You can turn them on at any time you want.
You can also configure your settings so your audio and video will always be off when entering the meeting. Click on the ‘settings’ icon (the gear icon) to go to Zoom settings.
Then, go to ‘Video’ from the navigation menu on the left.
And check the box for ‘Turn my video off when joining meeting’.
Now go to ‘Audio’ settings and check the box for ‘Mute my microphone when joining a meeting’.
Now, your audio and video will be off automatically when you join the meeting. You can turn them on from the meeting toolbar at any time.

Starting a scheduled meeting as a host
- Tap MeetingList in the left panel.
- Tap the topic of your scheduled meeting.
Note: To display meetings from a calendar service, you must integrate the Zoom Room with Google Calendar, Office 365, Exchange 2016/13, Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2007.
- Tap Start to start the meeting.
Starting an instant meeting
- The room list on the controller automatically displays up to 2,000 rooms in the same account. Rooms not displayed on the list are still searchable using the search bar at the top the room list.
- Users are not displayed in the contacts list but are searchable using the search bar at the top of the room list.
- Tap MeetNow in the left panel.
- Select a Zoom Room to invite, or use the search bar to find a user.
- Tap MeetNow to start an instant meeting.
Joining a meeting using the meeting ID
You can join a Zoom meeting by entering the meeting ID.
Note: If multiple Zoom Rooms join a meeting, the first one to join becomes the meeting host. If you’re supposed to be the host, you can claim host by using the host key.
- Tap Join in the left panel.
- Enter the meeting ID using the number pad.
- Tap Join.
- (Optional) Claim host by using the host key if you’re supposed to be the host.
Joining a meeting using meeting history
You can also join a meeting by selecting a meeting from list of previously-joined meeting.
Note: The meeting history list only displays meetings joined by entering the meeting ID.
- Tap Join in the left panel.
- Tap the downward arrow to display recently-joined meetings.
- Tap the meeting topic to join.
Of course, Zoom tries to hide the feature.
The new normal for office work during the coronavirus pandemic is telecommuting, powered by video conferencing tools like Zoom. The thing is, by default, Zoom tries to get you to download and install its app, which has had known security issues in the past.
You don’t need to download the app to use Zoom though, just your browser is sufficient enough to use the core functionality so you can telecommute in relative safety. We’ll show you how because Zoom goes out of its way to hide this unless the meeting host changes some default settings.

Many home workers will have locked-down corporate laptops to work from home and won’t be able to install the app. It’s not like they can ask IT to manually install it for them either.
Once you know that the link comes after you click to join the meeting, you can be on the lookout to click so you don’t have to install the app. That’s only one part of the equation though, as meeting hosts can make things simpler for invitees.
Here’s how to be a responsible Zoom meeting host in these trying times:
- Go into your Zoom account settings
- Navigate to Meeting
- Then to In Meeting (Advanced), and toggle Show a ‘join from your browser’ link to on
- Confirm the toggle if asked
- Then you have to do one more thing. Look at the right side of the toggle for a very faint gray padlock. Click on that so it goes blue, making the setting mandatory for all users, then click Lock to confirm
That’s not all though, you’ll also need to change some settings for your own Zoom meetings:
- Login to your account
- If you’re an admin, click on My Meetings Settings. If you’re a user, it’s My Meetings
- Navigate to Show a ‘join from your browser’ link, which shows under Meeting > Meeting (Advanced)
- If it’s grayed out, someone disabled it at the account or group level and you’ll need to change that at the account level or get your administrator to change it.
Oh, and Google Chrome is your best bet. You can connect to Zoom from Firefox, Safari, Edge, or even Internet Explorer, but Chrome has the most functionality.

Enter a display name: Before entering the meeting you will be asked to enter a display name. This name may be visible to others in the meeting and will allow the meeting presenters/moderators to recognize you. You may enter your first and last names or your first name and last initial if you prefer. Please be aware that if the meeting is being recorded (you will have received notification of this before the meeting), your display name may be included in the recording.
Enable audio: To listen through your computer’s speakers, select “Join Computer by Audio” (If you check the “Automatically join audio by computer…” option box first, you won’t have to make this choice again in the future.) If you are unable to listen through your computer’s speakers, you can dial in on your phone. Follow Zoom’s instructions; you will need the Meeting ID that was provided in your registration email.
Mute/unmute your microphone: In most cases, the meeting host will have all participants muted upon entry. If you need to speak, the host can unmute your microphone (see Raise Your Hand below) or you can unmute yourself. To unmute yourself, look for the black toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window. If it is not visible, place your cursor over the Zoom window so the toolbar appears. Click on the microphone icon in the lower left corner to unmute yourself; click a second time to mute yourself again.
Start/stop video: Your meeting host may or may not ask participants to turn their mobile device cameras/computer webcams on so participants can see each other. If necessary, you can start or stop video by clicking on the camera icon in the lower left corner of the black toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window. If the toolbar is not visible, place your cursor over the Zoom window so it appears.
Raise your hand: If your meeting host allows, you may ask a question or make a point using the ‘Raise Hand’ function.
- Look for the toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window. If it is not visible, place your cursor over the Zoom window so the toolbar appears. Click on the ‘Participants’ icon.
- A list of participants will appear and you will also see a ‘Raise Hand’ icon. Click the icon to let the host know you would like to speak.
- If you wish to lower your hand, click the ‘Lower hand’ icon that will have replaced the ‘Raise hand’ icon when you clicked on it.
Chat: You can use the “Chat” function to send a message to all participants or privately to specific participants. Please note: if a meeting is recorded, private messages will be visible in the recording!
- Look for the toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window. If it is not visible, place your cursor over the Zoom window so the toolbar appears. Click on the “Chat” icon.
- A chat window will open. Select “Everyone” or the name of the person you wish to send a chat message to.
- Type your message into the window and press the Enter key on your keyboard to send.

How do I join a meeting?
If someone has invited you to a Zoom meeting, you can join through an email or Zoom chat invite, from your browser, desktop client, or mobile app, with a H.323 or SIP device, and from a landline or mobile phone.
- Email invitations: Join through clicking the link in your email invitation
- Zoom Chat Invites: You will receive an incoming notification with a ringtone. Click Accept
- Join from Browser: Go to join.zoom.us and enter the meeting ID and click Join
- Join from Zoom desktop client or mobile app: Select Join A Meeting or Join, enter the meeting ID, and click Join
- H.323 and SIP device: Dial the IP address from your meeting invitation. Enter the meeting ID via touch tones followed by #. If you use our Zoom Connectors for Cisco and Polycom, you can skip the inputs and just tap the screen.
- Landline or mobile phone (without the Zoom app): Dial the teleconferencing number from your invite. Follow by entering the meeting ID when prompted.

How do I join or test my computer audio?
Zoom meetings feature high quality VoIP (Voice over IP, aka audio that comes from your computer instead of your telephone). Here’s how you can join via Computer Audio:
- Before joining the meeting, make sure your audio source is connected to your computer. Your audio source may be a USB microphone, a headset, or a built in microphone
After joining a meeting you can test your audio connection by clicking Test Computer Audio. Check your volume and output by clicking Test Speaker. If you cannot hear, adjust the output volume or select a different speaker device. Speak at a normal volume to check the input level. You should see a green bar move up and down. If the audio is not registering, select a different microphone device. You may also adjust your audio settings while in a meeting by clicking the arrow next the the microphone on the toolbar.
- After testing your audio, click in the pop-up box Join Audio by Computer to connect your audio and speaker to the meeting. If this is your preferred audio method, you can check Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting to skip this step in the future.
- If this dialog box doesn’t pop up, and your audio doesn’t connect automatically, click Join Audio in the bottom left corner of the Zoom meeting window.
My video/camera isn’t working.
- Troubleshooting tips for your computer: Make sure that all other programs using the camera are closed. You can also try restarting your computer and uninstalling and reinstalling Zoom. If problems persist, check your device’s camera driver or contact a support specialist.
- Troubleshooting tips for your mobile device: Make sure that all other apps using the camera are closed, and that the Zoom app has camera access in your settings. If problems persist, uninstall and reinstall Zoom from the App store or Google Play. If you still experience camera issues, contact your device support.

Teleconferencing use cases
You can join a Zoom meeting via teleconferencing/ audio conferencing using a traditional telephone. This is useful in occasions where:
- you do not have a microphone or speaker on your computer,
- you do not have a smartphone (iOS or Android) while on the road, or
- you could not connect to a network for video and VoIP/ computer audio.
You have two options for joining a zoom meeting by teleconferencing :
Option 1: Join by computer (for video) and telephone (for audio)
- Join a Zoom meeting
- Once you are in the meeting, select the Join Audio in the menu bar
- Follow instructions on the dialog box to Dial In
- Enter #Participant ID# . Otherwise you may hear audio feedback or echo in the meeting.
Option 2: Join by telephone only
- Dial a local number. See a list of dial-in numbers.
For US calls: (408) 638-0968 -or- (646) 558-8656
- You will be prompted to enter the meeting ID – the nine (9) or ten (10) digit ID provided to you by the host
- You will be prompted to enter your unique participant ID – Press # to skip
Note: If you decided to Join via telephone after Joining via computer:
- Select Audio Options
- Click Leave Computer Audio.
- Then enter #Participant ID#. Otherwise you may hear audio feedback or echo in the meeting.
- Select Audio Options
Teleconference only meetings
- Schedule or update your scheduled meeting with ‘enable join before host’ selected.
- See which of the following applies to your case when scheduling or updating your meeting.
- Update Meeting
- PMI Meeting
- See above ‘Join by Teleconference’ section.
Phone commands available for meeting participants
The following commands can be entered via DTMF tones using your phone’s dialpad while in a Zoom Meeting:
- Star ( * ) 6 – Toggle mute/ un-mute
- Star ( * ) 9 – Toggle raise/ lower hand
International calls and Zoom dial-in numbers
If you want to join a Zoom meeting originating in another country, you can do so using your normal client or plug-in to avoid international call charges.
If you need to connect by phone, you have two options to connect to an international meeting by phone:
- Use the Zoom number of the country you are in, if available, or
- Use the Zoom number of the nearest international calling country with the lowest per minute rates.
Find an international Zoom number
Connect by phone
- Dial one of the numbers provided.
Note: Make sure you use the proper country code for international calls. See how to dial internationally.
- Follow the prompt to enter your meeting ID – the nine (9) or ten (10) digit ID provided to you by the host, followed by #
- Follow the prompt to enter your unique participant ID. This only applies if you have joined on the computer or mobile device or are a panelist in a webinar. Press # to skip.
Switching between phone and computer audio
Changing from phone audio to phone audio and computer display
If you join by computer or mobile device later, you can enter the Participant ID to bind your phone and device session together and show your video when you speak on the phone.
To bind your phone and device session, enter #Participant ID# on your phone while in the device session.
Changing from computer audio to phone audio
If you joined computer audio automatically and need to join by phone you can leave the computer audio and join by phone:
- Click the arrow next to Mute/Unmute on the Zoom taskbar.
- Click Leave Computer Audio.
- Click Phone Call and follow the prompt to dial in.
