Non-Destructive Photo Editing in 60 Seconds

Non-destructive photo editing is a powerful technique that lets you preserve your image’s original data while still modifying it. You can even and go back and change every edit you make. Learn how to edit non-destructively in this 60 second tutorial.

Destructive Versus Non-Destructive Post-Production Workflows

In raster image editing programs like Adobe Photoshop, you can edit an image two ways: Destructively and Non-destructively. With destructive editing you overwrite the original pixel values, and can’t go back and change things later. With non-destructive editing, you use Adjustment Layers, Smart Objects and other tools and techniques to modify the image without overwriting the original data.

How to Edit Photos Non-Destructively

Take the image in the screencast above. One way to increase the Saturation is to select Hue/Saturation from the Adjustments menu. Push the Saturation and click OK. If we push the Saturation too far, I have to accept it, or undo it entirely. This is destructive editing. The changes are “baked in” to our image.

To make the same change non-destructively, you use a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer instead. Once again, increase the Saturation. This time, even if we go too far, we can double click on the Adjustment Layer and dial the effect back to a better amount.

We can even add a Layer Mask to control exactly what areas of the image are affected.

What Is A Photoshop Action?

A Photoshop action is a series of “recorded” commands that you can apply to an image to quickly apply the same series of steps to different files. You can record and create Photoshop actions on your own or download and install them from other sources.

Photoshop actions are designed to save you time in the editing process for actions that you do repeatedly. This works best for multi-step editing. It is important to note that the setting applied to a recorded action can act somewhat differently on different files, particularly for files with different image sizes or resolutions.

  4. The action is now installed and can be used.

How To Use Photoshop Actions

Have you ever wanted to learn magic? Well in this fun tutorial, you are going to learn how to make a sketch burn alive with fire! Learn how to create this cool fire effect using Adobe Photoshop’s powerful editing tools, layer blending, and color adjustments. This tutorial was sent in by Annabelle at 123rf, along with several others we’ll be presenting in the week to come.

This tutorial will be using Adobe Photoshop, and is intended for Beginners. It will take about an hour and for training and testing purposes, you should have some reference and source files. Just for practice, find these online, or you may purchase the actual files at 123rf.com:

Creating The Sketch Effect

Step 1 Open all your references in Photoshop. Copy and Paste the fire guitar on top of the sketchbook.

Step 2

Control + T to Resize and Rotate the fire guitar so that it fits better on the sketchbook, then set the layer to Difference.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and bring down the Saturation to -100 so that the image is now in grayscale.

See, it’s already looking like a real sketch!

Inserting the Guitar : Step 3

Copy and Paste the electric guitar onto a new layer and drag the layer so that it is beneath the fire guitar.
Set the layer to Darken to in order to eliminate the white background. Just like our previous step, go to
Image > Adjustments> Hue/Saturation
and bring down the Saturation to -100 so that the image is in grayscale.

Now the sketch looks even more like a guitar.

NEXT: Create the fire and finish your magic

Creating The Fire – Step 4

Use the Lasso Tool (L) to select pieces of fire from the fire collection and paste each selection into the document. We’ll be using mostly the bottom two layers of fire for this effect.

Fitting the fire – Step 5

Transform each section of fire so that they mold to the neck of the guitar. Control + T to Resize then select the Warp option to mold the direction of the fire. Try to mold it so it looks like the fire could be burning on top of the paper. Play around with different blend modes for this effect. Lighten and Screen work best to eliminate the black background. Erase any excess to blend jagged edges.

Creating some depth – Step 6

The only way to make this sketch really burn is to create some depth between the fire and paper. Select the sketchbook layer. Use the Burn Tool (O) with the Range set to Highlights, and begin burning on the paper around the neck of the guitar where the fire would be causing the most damage. Avoid the bottom of the sketch so that it’s still very visible to the viewer. Make the burn travel off the top of the page to intensify the effect. Now it looks like the fire is popping from the page!

Time for smoke! – Step 7

On a New layer (Control-Shift-N) grab the Brush Tool (B) and begin painting in smoke using a Soft Round Brush. To make this step easier, feel free to download any smoke brushes you find online. Use a medium color gray as the base of the smoke, and then add some smoke highlights with the color white.

Sign the work : Step 8

What’s a drawing without a signature right? This step is completely optional. A great way to add the impression of a real pencil sketch is to use the Brush Tool (B) to quickly doodle initials for an artist’s signature.

Step 9 – Final Adjustments

Adjustment layers make everything harmonious again!

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves and adjust the RGB, Red, and Blue Channels. Then add another new adjustment layer Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance. Bringing out the red and yellow Midtones will make the fire pop, and adjusting the Blue Highlights will make the smoke come alive.

Finish off your fiery masterpiece by cropping the image so that all the focus is on the sketch. And there you have it! Impress all you friends with magic by making unique sketches comes alive! Enjoy!

Special thanks to Annabelle at 123rf for sending in this tutorial. We’ll be seeing more from her in the near future. So as always, if you find a great tutorial or you’d like to submit your own tutorial, just visit our contributions page!

.W.D.N.Y. 1999) (noting that the results of a particular analysis may not be « appropriate » where unusual circumstances suggest that the data should be discounted). We have undertaken to fashion a test that will account for the times when the factors work together to create unusually strong findings.
The concept of a « statistical tableau » was first introduced by Professor Taub in a series of articles in which he taught a graduate course in computer science at Columbia University. See D. McIntyre, Statistical Evaluation of Software, 22 Syst. Softw. Rev. 135, 136-37, 139 (1991). Under the procedures he described, the computer would produce a tableau that would be printed out in alphabetical order. See id. At the top of the tableau, the computations would be listed under « C. » Following these rows would be the standard statistical computations. The levels of « t » would be displayed alphabetically, and the corresponding « p » values would be placed by year of publication.
That research has been followed by other researchers. For example, in Random Effects Meta-Analysis: Survey Comparing Two Approaches, 2 J. Clin. Epidemiol. 23, 23-28 (1999), John M. Saunders identified three other versions of a tableau that were used in his literature review. See id. at 23 n. 2. The third version consisted of « a simple frame that lists all the studies in an ordered list. » Id. at 23. In this third tableau, « C » would denote the control group, and « E » would denote the experimental group. « t » would be listed at the top of the tableau alphabetically. Within the tableau, « p » values would be alphabetically listed. See id. at 24.
The results of this research has been echoed in a recent article by D. M. MacIntyre, Computer-Assisted Evidence Synthesis in Medicine: A Statistical Tableau for Evaluating Evidence, in D. J. Spiegelhalter et al., The Annals of Statistics 35, 1153-1313 (2007). He described the most widely used tableau that he had in mind. See id. at 1158. As the tableau is « printed horizontally, » it enables readers to « compare a summary estimate… of a single parameter from each study in the tableau… with a traditional meta-analysis of effect sizes. » Id. MacIntyre would call this the « base-

What dpms state is currently logged by gnome-screensaver?

As the title says I want to know what « dpms » state is currently logged when the screen is switched off with a screen saver or a power button.
The reason for this is that I’m starting an app in gnome-screensaver and I need to close it after screensaver finishes. At some point I want to know the current state of the screen.
Edit
I’m interested in setting the volume to zero when the screen is switched off so the only potential solution I know of is to listen to /sys/class/power_supply/*/online events, but I don’t know enough about linux kernel to do it (not to be annoying), and I would rather not fiddle with kernel to solve this small problem.

try this:
# you could also use
# /sys/class/power_supply/*/online
# /sys/class/power_supply/ac_online
# /sys/class/power_supply/whatever_you_like
# but `systemctl` is needed

echo ‘<>’ > /etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.gtk.vfs.file-notify.conf
systemctl enable dbus-org.gtk.vfs.file-notify.service

# then you need to run
# systemctl status –type=service dbus-org.gtk.vfs.file-notify.service
# and see your logs

If you use:
/sys/class/power_supply/*/online

new sound is in the air as we enter the new decade: the sound of minds being pried open to disruptive change.

When the electric guitar was invented in 1931 to help a quiet instrument sound much louder, there was little expectation that it would revolutionize both recorded music and live performances, and indeed pop culture. Today the electric guitar is ubiquitous, powerful, mesmerizing (and often deafening). The electric guitar has taken music and culture to a new level in many different ways, some good and some not so good.

When Photoshop® was created in 1988, film ruled and had not yet been widely replaced by digital photography. The internet and social media did not exist as we know them now. Today this powerful editing technology can add people and objects to photographs, or it can remove them; it can convert beauty to ugliness, or the sublime to the horrific; it can create “realities” that do not actually exist and spread them to billons around the globe in seconds. Photoshop® has taken the visual arts to a new level in many different ways, some good and some not so good.

When the randomized clinical trial (RCT) was invented, as far back as 1747 and more recently and impactfully in 1946 as an effort to introduce systematic discipline to traditionally “informal” scientific inquiries, there was little expectation that it would transform the way new medicines are created and developed, much less spawn a government-industrial complex that invests hundreds of billions in clinical research for the benefit of patients everywhere. The RCT has taken medicine to a new level in many different ways, some good and some not so good.

The “good” ways are clear: RCT methods and practices have created jobs for hundreds of thousands of people; novel drugs have changed the practice of medicine; pain and suffering have been reduced; and millions of lives have been saved.

The “not so good” ways are now becoming clear: Randomized clinical trials are inefficient, expensive, and inconvenient for participants; they are not consistently inclusive and are at times inadvertently racist and misogynistic; they may be “artificial” and “unrealistic” representations of the real world where patients live and suffer; and/or they may lull patient and doctors into a false sense of security about drug efficacy and safety.

These realizations, and more, are evident in the Top Ten articles and podcasts published in Global Forum in the past year (see following article). Clinical research, technology, regulation, genomic medicine, digital health, the “real world,” and the patient have attracted our readers and listeners the most. The future is exciting, but issues remain.

Help is on the way. The new awareness (by regulators, payers and industry alike) that data and evidence must be collected in the “real world” (RWD/RWE) has taken hold; it will not replace but rather complement our affection for the randomized clinical trial. Access to vast electronic health/medical records (EHR/EMR) will, with support from AI and machine learning, make our understanding of the use of drugs in the “real world” less vague and more pragmatic. Virtual trials will soon increase convenience for clinical trial participants, presumably boosting participation and enrollment in much-needed clinical research. Platform, basket, and umbrella trials will accelerate the process of drug development and speed new medicines to patients.

Like the electric guitar and photo editing, clinical research has evolved and has increased its impact on society dramatically over time. It will continue to do so, disrupting our thinking and our behavior. By the end of the 2020s, we may not even recognize it if we look at it with today’s lens. And that will probably be a good thing for us all.
