Ever seen a mall photobooth create a “pencil drawing” from a photo? Give us about one minute, and see how you can create an easy grayscale image effect that looks like a tonal pencil drawing. Check it out!
Automated software and Photoshop filters just try to awkwardly add pencil textures to your images. With some smart adjustments and an easy technique appropriate for beginners, you can turn some of your favorite photos into handsome, tonal, pencil art style images. Keep reading!
Starting With The Right Photograph
Open Photoshop and an image of your choice. Choosing the right image is not critical, but can give you a better result.
Edit: Commenter LT has tried this technique in Photoshop Elements, and says that it works! Other readers running Elements give it a shot and tell us about your success in the comments!
Any image can work, although it’s best to use images with good contrast, and sharp details. This image has great shadows and really nice highlights that lend itself to this technique. You may find that some of your photos will be more successful than others. Try it out on several to see which ones look the best!
The Tonal Pencil Art Effect
We’ll begin by making a copy of our background layer.
Right click your Background layer and select “Duplicate Layer.” Then make sure that this Background Copy layer is selected, as shown on the right.
With the background layer selected, press to Desaturate your layer, reducing it to black and white.
Make a second copy of your black and white layer, and then set this layer to blending mode “Color Dodge,” shown highlighted in blue, on the right. We’ll be referring to this layer as our “Color Dodge” layer from here on out.
Your image should become harsh and lose some detail. Press to invert your Color Dodge layer.
This is going to make your photograph look like either a blank page or a weird abstract, like this one. No worries, we’ll soon bring a great image out of this.
This next step can be done at least two different ways. By blurring the Color Dodge layer, we can create grayscale shadow tones and control them with the slider as shown. This one is done with the Gaussian Blur, which you can find by navigating to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
This effect above was achieved by applying the “Motion Blur” filter on the Color Dodge Layer. Find this filter under Filters > Blur > Motion Blur. This method gives similar results, but allows you to control the angle of the blur, which can give you a naturalistic angled stroke for your “pencil drawing.”
(Author’s note: Pick one of the blurs above and use it. One or the other will give you a good result, but you do not have to use both!)
This is a decent look on its own, but let’s go one step further, and add some linework to our “pencil drawing.”
Create another copy of your original black and white Background copy layer. Move it to the top of your layers panel, as shown above right.
With your third copy selected, navigate to Filters > Stylize > Glowing Edges.
Glowing Edges can create a sort of Photoshop filter version of lineart from a photograph.
These are the settings used in this example, although you will likely have to play around with them yourself to find ones that you like. In other words, these settings may not work with every image.
The “Glowing Edges” filter can give a pretty fun effect all by itself. But we have to transform it one final time before we’re finished.
Press to invert the colors.
Set this layer to blending mode “Multiply” to overlay the dark lines over the “pencil drawing.”
This is our result!
Optional: For some extra oomph, we can adjust our levels on our lines, and make them more dramatic. Navigate to Image > Adjustments > Levels to bring up this tool and adjust it as shown above to make your lines even more prominent.
While our final result would probably not fool Da Vinci, it does make a nice image, and a fun project to try on a pile of photos. Enjoy!
Learn how to create a realistic photo sketch in Photoshop using some simple filters; you cab create your own digital sketch drawing in just a few minutes. If you want an even faster method you can try my sketch Photoshop action; I hope you will enjoy this new tutorial and practice it on your own photos.

Let’s take a quick look at the final result of the pencil sketch drawing Photoshop tutorial. This tutorial is for intermediate Photoshop users and it will take you abot 20 minute to make.
I will start with a background image choosing this beautiful rough paper texture; you can also use another old paper texture from this list. You have to desaturate the paper texture.
Time to add the photo. I will use this beautiful girl stock image but you can use whatever image you like but you might have to make small adjustments. Set the Foreground color balck and Background Color white. Duplicate the Girl Layer three times so in total you have to have 4 girl layers. Select the Girl 2 Layer and Go to Filter>Sketch and choose Stamp.
Select the Girl 3 Layer and use the same Stamp Filter but with different settings.
Return to the Girl 2 Layer, open the layer style window and hide the white color.
Right click on the Girl 2 Layer and choose Convert to Smart Object; read more about Smart Objects in Photoshop. Reapeat this process with the Girl 3 Layer.
I will now use a simple pencil sketch pattern that I have made and add it as Pattern Overlay for the Girl 2 Layer. This is not a seamless pattern as you can see but we’ll fix it in the next steps. Download the sketch pattern or create one yourself. Alternatively, you can use this free pencil texture Photoshop image.
Do the same thisng for the Girl 3 Layer but resize the pattern a little bit and also drag the pattern to obtain a non repetitive result.
Select the Girl 4 Layer and Go to Filter>Sketch and choose Photocopy.
Change the blend mode of the Girl 4 Layer to Multiply
Place the Girl 1 Layer above all the other layers and change its blend mode to Screen. Also add a Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast adjustment layers only to this layer.
As a final touch use a copy of the Rough Paper Texture and place it above all the other layers. Desaturate the texture and change its blend mode to Multiply. You can adjust the pencil pressure and color intensity by adding a Brightness/Contrast adjustment for all the layers.
So here is the final result for our sketch drawing Photoshop effect that you can make in just a few simple steps using a premade pencil sketch pattern. If you want you can use some pencil brushes instead of the sketch pattern. Or you can use both for a better result.
TIP! If you do not desaturate the Girl 1 Layer you will obtain a colored pencil sketch effect that looks just as cool. Or you can add a Hue/Saturation adjustment and use colorize to add a color effect. (pencil used in the preview link

These are stunning hyper-realistic pencil drawings that can take up to 100 hours to complete – but the artist insists anyone can master the skill if they put in the practice.
Emma Towers-Evans, 29, first picked up a pencil when she was just two years old and said her love for drawing began after watching the film ‘Free Willy’ when she was inspired to draw killer whales.
Now she creates incredible pencil portraits of people and animals – some of which can take her up to 100 hours to complete – and that are so realistic they look like photos.
Emma often completes the drawings on a large A1 or A0 paper and estimates each piece of artwork can have upwards of 500,000 individual pencil strokes.

She shares her incredible creations on TikTok and has racked up over 264,000 followers and an impressive 4.5 million likes on her videos (https://www.instagram.com/eteportraits/; https://www.tiktok.com/@eteportraits).
In some of her popular videos, she can be seen drawing portraits of well-known celebrities like Rhianna and Taylor Swift.
The self-taught artist insists ‘anyone’ can master the craft if they put in the hours after she saw her skills improve after years of practice.
Emma, who is an artist from Stourbridge, a market town in the West Midlands, in the United Kingdom, said: “I don’t believe people are ‘naturally talented’ when it comes to drawing.
“It’s taken me years of practice, patience, and dedication to get to where I am today.
“I think anyone can get to that level – you just need to have that same determination and self-belief.”
Emma loved drawing as a hobby during her childhood and teens, but never thought it would be her future career.
While at the University of Surrey, studying music and sound recording, she began doing commissions and would often draw portraits of people’s pets.

As her success continued, Emma decided to focus on drawing full-time and set up her website.
Now the pencil artist sells her original work and her subjects are often portraits of people.
She also created a series of big cat drawings called the ‘Felidae series’ and 25 percent of the proceeds when to cat conservation charities like the Born Free Foundation and Lion Aid.
One of these portraits was based on Christian the Lion – a famous pet lion who was bought from Harrods in the 1970s – and Emma had permission from the photographer to sketch his photo.
She said: “My style is hyper-realistic – I try to create something that looks as real as possible.
“I like to draw things from the natural world like people and animals.
“It’s really exciting to see something come alive on the paper.”
Emma set up her TikTok – @eteportraits – March 2020 and couldn’t believe the response she received.
Her videos capture each stage of her drawings and her partner, Nick Harding, 28, edits them.
In one video, she shows the process of creating her self-portrait which took 97 hours to complete.
Now she posts to her 264.9k followers and has racked up an incredible 4.5million likes.
She also has an Instagram page where she posts her stunning drawings to her 61.4k followers.
Emma said: “I started the page during lockdown as a bit of fun.
“The first one I posted was a timelapse video of a portrait and I can’t believe how popular it’s become.
“The comments and support I get are amazing.
“My boyfriend edits them and does an amazing job – I try to release a couple a week.”
The self-taught artist tries to encourage other people to pick up a pencil and give it a go.
She doesn’t believe in ‘talent’ and believes artistic skill comes from hours of hard work.
Emma said: “I think having that ability can be attenable for anyone.
“It’s just a case of knowing how to do it, which comes with lots of practice.
“I think anyone can become an artist if they’ve got the time and patience.”

Amazing Pencil Sketches Biography
I love finding easy pencil drawings that I can copy – and then I marvel at how clever I am, because I drew them!
I draw what I know I’m capable of producing and when I move on to more complex subjects, it amazes me that I can achieve a remote likeness! This obviously comes about because I continuously draw (which is the same as pratice) and it all works towards encouraging me to push boundaries.
A lot of my drawings don’t work out but I remind myself that the next one will be an improvement on the last because that is the way it works. In the meantime, I keep copying simple drawings and loving every minute of it.
Lotus Flower Drawing
To begin, look for the type of easy pencil drawings like this lotus flower here – that is, ones with lots of white space inside and around them.
I think that the greatest benefit of this pastime is the basic tools that are needed to start. Funny Cartoon Mouse
All you need is a 2B pencil, an eraser and paper.
I use photocopy paper a lot because I find it easy to erase on that surface.
I also have a cheap sketch pad that I carry around with me.
I don’t worry so much about the quality of the paper, these easy pencil drawings are for my practice purposes only. An extra benefit is that I don’t worry about ruining the book and wasting money.
My favorite is a mechanical pencil with a 2B lead. It saves me time because I don’t have to sharpen it and lose concentration.
They work by clicking the end of the pencil which pushes the graphite lead through the tip. The graphite leads come in different sizes, it doesn’t really matter which one you use at the start – I use .5mm.
I consistently use 2 erasers. One is a good brand and the other is a kneadable eraser. Neither of these is expensive. Simple Flower Drawing
I use the ordinary eraser to rub out large amounts of the drawing and I use the kneadable one to get at the finer parts without disturbing too much of the drawing.
The kneadable eraser is very soft and pliable. You can shape it into a fine point to get at finnicky bits. It doesn’t leave a residue like the ordinary eraser, so it’s cleaner to work with.
Later on, you will use an eraser to create features in your artwork – it’s a very handy little tool!

Imagine Teaching Yourself To Draw!
Drawing is a skill that anyone can learn, all you need to do is try it.
Once you start, your skills develop at a rate that will surprise you. Before you know it, you’ll be experimenting with all different mediums and each day becomes an adventure.
I love to wake up and look at the images that I created the day before. I feel a sense of wonder and it’s such an exciting experience. I desperately want you to experience these emotions, too.
Just as you learn to walk before you run, well, you need to start with easy pencil drawings before you progress on to more complex sketches.
This drawing below looks complicated but if you look carefully, you will notice the only thing that has an outline is the building. All the rest of the picture was created with small strokes. I love to see the trees emerge out of those little lines.
Drawing With Lines
When you learn to sketch, these types of strokes emerge effortlessly from your pencil. It doesn’t cease to amaze me as I stare at the image that evolves from such carefree marks.
As you study this illustration more, you begin to see a wide variety of different things and it really gets your imagination working. I find this type of artwork so intriguing — no skill is required, but there’s lots of fun to be had.
These are the type of easy pencil drawings that I’d love you to explore with me. Let’s do this together!

Stare closely at the pictures on this page. What do you think it took to create these beautiful images of Amy Winehouse, Mother Teresa, Princess Diana and Rihanna? An expensive camera, a precision lens, hours of trial and error from a skilled photographer?
Well, the answer is none of the above.
All of these extraordinarily detailed pictures are pencil drawings, created purely by hand — with no digital trickery — by British artist Kelvin Okafor, whose only tools are a set of pencils, a piece of paper and the occasional stick of charcoal (though most of the pictures don’t even require that). Yet no matter how closely one looks, there’s not a pencil line in sight.

Windows to the soul: Kelvin Okafor begins with the eyes when he creates his realistic sketches of famous faces from Beyonce to Mother Teresa
The artist’s story is almost as sensational as the pictures he has been producing since he was a teenager who was too poor to leave his house to socialise. Instead of drinking and clubbing, Ofakor, now 27, stayed at home in Tottenham, North London, seeking solace in drawing. Now it looks as if he’s on his way to fame and fortune.
Today, an exhibition of his work opens at London’s Science Museum — and already some of his portraits are changing hands for £10,000 apiece. This week, a portrait he drew of King Hussein of Jordan is to be presented to the late monarch’s widow, Queen Noor.

Anyone can commission a portrait, though he will charge anything from £800 to £3,000 for his work. He says he prefers to work from photographs rather than real life — partly because of the length of time he spends on each picture.
So how does Okafor create these incredible works of art? ‘Before I start drawing, I spend a few hours — even a few days — analysing the face from every angle. I usually start with the eyes. From there, I make the whole shape of the face and I work in the detail.
Invincible: The Middlesex University Fine Art graduate is gaining increasing recognition with images including this one of pop star Tinie Tempah
Each work takes the 27-year-old up to 100 hours to complete, and he tries to inspire emotion in the viewer with vivid portraits. Pictured, Heath Ledger and Princess Diana
Beauty of life: Mr Okafor favours using a simple pencil because it is ‘humble’ and allows a subject – such as James Morrison, pictured – to shine
Rated R: The London-based artist has now scooped national awards and is exhibiting across the country. Pictured, Rihanna
‘I draw in sections. I’m right-handed so I work from left to right. After I’ve finished the left eye, I work the nostrils, then the left side of the cheek, then the lips. I always work in that order.
‘I work for four hours in one go, take a half-hour break, work another four to five hours, then have another half-hour break. After that I’ll work for as long as I can. Sometimes I might work ten to 15 hours in one day. It takes me on average 80 to 100 hours to do a portrait.’
He says the importance of hard work was impressed upon him, his brother and two sisters by their parents. His father, who now works in the oil industry, was originally a warden looking after a council estate; his mother stayed at home to bring up the children. For this is a story not just about an incredible craftsman but of the triumph of the human spirit, the value of faith and a strong, loving family. ‘Absolutely. My parents came to this country from Nigeria so that their children could have a better life. They instilled the message that hard work pays off.’
Education mattered, too. His parents, practising Catholics, fought for him to attend St Ignatius College, a prestigious Jesuit school in Enfield, several miles away from their home — whose ex-pupils include Alfred Hitchcock and Beatles producer Sir George Martin.
Okafor says: ‘Most teenagers experiment a lot with their life. They have their experiences.’ He means drink and drugs. ‘I didn’t have that. But, to be honest, I didn’t want it anyway. I was too busy trying to focus on my craft.’
Okafor, who had gained nine GCSEs, went on to study art at Middlesex University. It was here he found his true vocation. ‘When I draw, I’m doing something I love. I lose myself in my art. Time doesn’t matter to me.’ Incredibly, he was so absorbed in his work he was at first oblivious to the riots which were raging through his neighbourhood during summer 2011.
‘I was drawing at the time. My house is a minute away from where it was happening. I heard helicopters and I thought: “What’s going on?” Then I went outside and saw people running around, and I started getting phone calls asking: “Kelvin, are you OK? There’s a riot in Tottenham.” It was a big shock to me.’
Okafor believes he might never have become an artist had he not needed to look for a distraction. For his upbringing was far from privileged — not that he is the sort of person to complain about life.
He grew up in one of the country’s poorest areas, where he still lives with his family. As an 11-year-old, he returned home with his family from an extended holiday to find their house had been repossessed.
‘It was just before I started secondary school and my life changed completely. We were homeless — not living on the street but we didn’t have a house for ourselves for the next three years. We moved from place to place, from cousin to cousin.’
He lived in five different homes over the course of just a few years — before eventually moving into a council flat, where the family remain today.
Why did the family lose the house? ‘I never knew. I just came back from Nigeria and found we weren’t living in that house any more. I’ve never really wanted to press my parents on the subject. I just accepted what had happened and moved on.
‘It was a struggle. That’s why I spent a lot of time by myself, drawing. I didn’t have the luxury of going out and spending money.’
Today, his greatest pleasure is the pride he knows his success gives his parents. The other day, his local TV news carried a short item about him.
‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen my dad cry before. But he cried when he saw me and my art on the BBC. And my mum. Everyone was emotional. I was crying. It makes me feel happy to know I am making my family proud. That means the most to me. It makes me want to work harder and do more.’

Hi CAFE Crew, here is a brand new tut for you all. This is an old favorite of mine. How to turn a photo into a pencil sketch in photoshop. This is actually really easy to do and it gets quite good results too. As usual, I’ll provide a few creative jump off points at the end for your own experimentation.
Start with a Photo that has some decent edge detail, here is one I got from Adobe Stock
Covert the photo to grayscale (Ctrl+Shift+D / Cmd+Shift+D)
Duplicate the layer by dragging into the new layer icon, or press Ctrl/Cmd+J
Invert the layer Cmd/Ctrl+I
Change to Linear Dodge blend mode and you should see a perfectly white image (Use Color Dodge for sharper edges)
(You could actually use any filter, as long as it creates a difference between the 2 layers)
As you adjust the blur you will get a different result.
Here are some variations using Color Dodge, you will notice that Linear Dodge produces a softer result that Color Dodge. Try different blending Modes for different results.
Here is the result on a different image
Once you have your perfect pencil sketch, why not try adding some color for a nice variation.
In this first example, I added a solid color Fill adjustment layer. Change the blend mode to color, so only the color shows through. Adjust the opacity to suit your tastes.
Color Dodge result
Also try running a gradient through a new blank layer at the top and change that to color blend mode.
As you can see, the effect itself is quite simple and there are a number of variations that you can try to get very different looking results. Add a comment at let me know how you are using this effect.

This fun watercolor pencil art lesson shows you how to create colorful abstract art using watercolor pencils, watercolors and watercolor masking fluid!
In this detailed step-by-step art lesson, you’ll be both drawing and painting – but don’t worry, it’s not hard at all! Because you’ll be creating an abstract, anything goes in terms of color choices, shapes and designs, and the placement of those designs (in art terms, this is referred to as “composition”).
Even if you’ve never used watercolor pencils before, you’ll find that the techniques described here are easy to follow, providing you with a basis for further exploration and experimentation. Consider this a primer in how to use watercolor pencils!
You’ll also learn how to use watercolor masking fluid. If you’ve never used masking fluid before, you’ll discover what a wonderful tool it can be to create special effects in your watercolor art.
I’ve provided links below to the relevant products so that you can easily find them on Blick Art Materials, my favorite online art supplier. I’m a member of Blick’s affiliate program, which means if you make a purchase after clicking on one of these links, I’ll receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you). Your purchase helps support this site and keeps it free of ads. Click here for more info.
- Watercolor pencils – A set of 12 should be enough to get you going in this lesson. I have 2 sets of watercolor pencils – a set of 24 Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils and a set of 24 Staedtler Karat Watercolor Pencils, so I used colors from both sets in this tutorial.
- Watercolors – Any basic set of watercolors will do. For this tutorial I used a set by Sennelier (the Sennelier Watercolor Travel Set with 14 Half Pans. In the past I have used student watercolor sets by Loew-Cornell. You can use either pan watercolors or tube watercolors, whichever you prefer.
- Watercolor masking fluid – I used Winsor & Newton’s Colorless Art Masking Fluid.
- Painting surface – I used an 8 inch by 10 inch Ampersand Aquabord because it is a strong, sturdy surface that doesn’t require any preparation before use. Your painting surface can be any size you want and you can also use watercolor paper if you prefer.
- 2 small, round paintbrushes – For this painting, I used 2 small round watercolor paintbrushes: an old, inexpensive one for use with the masking fluid, and a newer nicer brush for painting both the bottom background layer and for wetting the watercolor pencil marks. When using watercolor masking fluid, you should always use an inexpensive brush, because if the fluid dries on your brush, the bristles can quickly get damaged beyond repair.
- Bar of soap – For clean-up and also to protect the bristles of the brush you’ll be dipping in the masking fluid (more on this in the tutorial).
- Cup of water

Step 1: Using masking fluid
The first step of this Watercolor Pencil Art Lesson is to create abstract designs using watercolor masking fluid.
Before you start using your masking fluid, there are some things you need to be aware of:
First – and this is very important! – masking fluid dries quickly. This means that once you put it on your paintbrush, you need to move quickly to put the fluid onto your paper or board, before it starts to dry on the bristles. If masking fluid does dry on the bristles, it can be very difficult (often impossible!) to remove – and if you do manage to remove the dried masking fluid, your brush may be a stiff, unusable shadow of its former self. This is why you should use an old brush or an inexpensive brush when using masking fluid.
With that said, here’s a tip that can help prevent your brush bristles from drying out while using masking fluid:
Rub the bristles over a bar of damp soap, working the soap into the bristles. Alternatively, you can add a drop of dishwashing liquid to a small cup of water, and dip the brush in that. Both techniques will help protect the brush against the quick-drying masking fluid. Then, without rinsing the brush, dip the brush into your masking fluid, and apply the masking fluid to your paper.
Be sure to apply the masking fluid to dry paper. If your paper is wet or damp, the fluid won’t adhere properly.
When I use masking fluid, I clean the brush as soon as the bristles start to feel stiff, even if I’m not done applying the masking fluid everywhere I want it. This means I usually clean the brush several times before I’ve finished applying the fluid.
How to clean masking fluid from your brushes
To clean the paintbrush, hold it under running water and rub soap through the bristles until the bristles start to feel pliant and soft. If you still need to apply more masking fluid to your painting, rub soap into the bristles and leave it there (as described above). If you’re done with the brush, rinse out all the soap and let the brush dry.
Paint designs with masking fluid
So now that you know all the technical stuff about using masking fluid, your next step is to use the masking fluid to paint whimsical abstract shapes and designs on your paper or board, like so:
In this tutorial you will learn how to create an amazing painting effect. I will explain everything in so much detail that everyone can create it, even those who have just opened Photoshop for the first time.
The effect shown above is the one I will show you how to create in this tutorial. If you would like to create the even more advanced painting effects shown below, as simply and quickly as possible, then check out my Painterly Photoshop Action.
What You’ll Need
To recreate the design above, you will need the following resources:
- Stock Image
- Texture 1 – no longer available
- Texture 2
1. Let’s Get Started
First, open the photo that you want to work with. To open your photo, go to File > Open, choose your photo, and click Open. Now, before we get started, just check a couple of things:
- Your photo should be in RGB Color mode, 8 Bits/Channel. To check this, go to Image > Mode.
- For best results, your photo size should be 2000–3000 px wide/high. To check this, go to Image > Image Size.
- Your photo should be the Background layer. If it is not, go to Layer > New > Background from Layer.
2. How to Create a Painting Effect
In this section, we are going to create a painting effect. Press Control-J on your keyboard to duplicate the Background layer. Then, go to Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint and enter the settings below:
Now name this layer Painting Effect. Then, press Control-J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer, go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen, and set the Amount to 500%, Radius to 1.5 px, and Remove to Gaussian Blur.
Name this layer Painting Sharpening.
3. How to Add Textures
In this section, we are going to add some textures to the design. Go to File > Place Embedded, select the texture from the first texture link, and click Place. Then, set the Width and Height of the texture to 530.02% as shown below, and name this layer Texture_1.
Now change the Blending Mode of this layer to Soft Light.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black & White to create a new black & white adjustment layer, and name it Texture_1_Desaturate.
Now press Control-Alt-G on your keyboard to create a clipping mask.
Go to File > Place Embedded, select the texture from the second texture link, and click Place. Then, set the Width and Height of the texture to 75.28% and the Angle to 90°, and name this layer Texture_2.
Now change the Blending Mode of this layer to Soft Light and drag it just below the Texture_1 layer in the Layers panel.
Select the Texture_1_Desaturate layer and press Control-J on your keyboard to duplicate it. Then, drag this layer just above the Texture_2 layer in the Layers panel.
Now press Control-Alt-G on your keyboard to create a clipping mask. Name this layer Texture_2_Desaturate.
4. How to Make the Final Adjustments
In this section, we are going to make final adjustments to the design. Select the Texture_1_Desaturate layer, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves to create a new curves adjustment layer, and name it Color Look.
Now Double-click on this layer thumbnail and in the Properties panel enter the settings below:
Set the Opacity of this layer to 81%.
Now go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Vibrance to create a new vibrance adjustment layer and name it Overall Vibrance/Saturation.
Double-click on this layer thumbnail and in the Properties panel, set Vibrance to +34 and Saturation to +20.
Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels to create a new levels adjustment layer and name it Overall Brightness.
Now Double-click on this layer thumbnail and in the Properties panel enter the settings below:
Press Control-Alt-Shift-E on your keyboard to make a screenshot, and then press Control-Shift-U to desaturate this layer. Then, go to Filter > Other > High Pass and set the Radius to 2 px.
Now change the Blending Mode of this layer to Hard Light and set the Opacity to 38%. Name this layer Overall Sharpening.
You Made It!
Congratulations, you have succeeded! Here is our final result:
If you would like to create the even more advanced painting effects shown below, as simply and quickly as possible, then check out my Painterly Photoshop Action.
The action comes in two versions: regular and quick. The regular version of the action needs about 10-20 minutes to complete because it creates real paint strokes. It also requires a little bit of work from your side (the video tutorial guides you through the whole process, making this part easy and fun). The quick version of the action simulates a paint stroke effect, producing a less realistic effect than the regular version, but it runs in less than a minute. The action includes canvas and paint crack textures and creates ten different color looks that you can choose from.
It comes with a detailed video tutorial that demonstrates how to use the action and customize the results to get the most out of the effect.
