What You’ll Need

MSI Afterburner is primarily an overclocking tool for squeezing more performance out of your graphics card. But it also works with the RivaTuner Statistics Server from Guru3D.com to display real-time performance while gaming.

To get started, you’ll need to download and install both applications on your Windows PC.

Getting Started With Afterburner

After you download and install MSI Afterburner, you’ll see the interface above. You can change this look, but we won’t be covering that here. In the default interface, there are two dials that show the current status of your graphics cards, including the frequencies of the GPU and memory clocks, the voltage, and current temperature.

Between the two dials, there are sliders that allow you to tweak all this data (here’s how to overclock your graphics card, if you’re interested).

Before we get all those delicious stats up on your screen, just one caveat: don’t close the windows of either Afterburner or RTSS, as that also closes the programs. Instead, minimize them and they’ll disappear from the taskbar. In the system tray, you’ll then see two icons: a jet (Afterburner) and a computer monitor with a “60” on it (RivaTuner Statistics Server).

Now, let’s get ready for the big show. Open Afterburner, and then click the Settings cog. In the window that appears, click “On-Screen Display.” In the “Global On-Screen Display Hotkeys” section, you can set these to whatever you want or leave the defaults.

After you choose a property to show up in the on-screen display (OSD), you’ll see “In OSD” under the “Properties” tab to the right of each name.

One of the most common properties people want to display is the frame rate to make sure their machine is hitting that all-important golden zone of 60 frames per second. To enable this, select the checkbox next to “Framerate,” and then select the checkbox next to “Show in On-Screen Display.”

Gamers often talk about how many games aren’t optimized for processors over four cores. If you have a six- or eight-core processor, you might want to keep an eye on the CPU performance and how work is distributed.

Afterburner automatically detects how many threads your CPU has and offers options accordingly. This isn’t a feature you want to run all the time. However, it can be particularly useful when you’re playing a new game so you can see how your system handles it. It’s also handy to see how a recent driver or game update has improved performance.

While we’ve done the bulk of the work to get Afterburner running, we’re not quite done. In the system tray, right-click the RivaTuner Statistics Server icon, and then click “Show.” Again, make sure the “Show On-Screen Display” option is enabled.

We also suggest changing the “Application Detection Level” option to “High,” so most games will be automatically detected, and the in-game display will show up. You might get a few false positives occasionally, but it’s usually pretty good about only appearing when you’re playing a game.

Monitoring CPU and GPU performance is something that each of us wants to perform, especially when playing AAA titles. We want to keep track of our gaming temps, check on our FPS drops and see how much load our CPU & GPU can handle.

Once you’ve successfully downloaded the MSI Afterburner software utility on your desktop, next up is the installation process. Extract the zip folder which you’ve recently downloaded to any desired location on your PC. Keep following the instructions of the installation screen and choose MSI Afterburner.

It will automatically install on your system & the software utility will launch on its own.

Step # 2: Configure the MSI Afterburner

Step # 4: Run a Game to Make Sure the MSI Afterburner is Working

Now choose the game which you want to run and track using the MSI Afterburner. And you will see the metrics appear in the upper left corner of the screen so you can track in real time.

1. Download MSI Afterburner

First thing to do, is to download the MSI Afterburner application. If you already have the application installed, you may skip this part. You can download the Application by clicking on the link below:

2. Install MSI Afterburner

Your downloaded file will be on a zipped file so you will need to extract it first using a compression/decompression tool like WinRAR or WinZip. Windows usually have a built-in decompression application so you just right click on the zipped file and then select extract to where you want to where you want to save the content.

Once you extracted the file, open the extracted folder and inside you will see the actual installer of MSI Afterburner. Double click on it to run the installer. First, the installer will ask the language so select what language you want and click OK. Installed will display a Welcome Message. Just click on Next button to proceed.

Next section will be the License Agreement. If you don’t have a plan to do anything illegal, I say it’s safe to just click on the “I accept the….” or just read the actual agreement and select the radio button beside the “I accept the terms of the License Agreement” option and click on Next button to proceed.

On the next section, make sure that the checkbox for the RivaTuner Statistics Server is checked. After that click on Next button to proceed.

Next, select on the folder where you want to install the application and then click on the Next button again. In the next section, just disregard and click on Install button to install the application. MSI Afterburner will proceed with the installation and once completed, installation of RivaTuner Statistics Server will start. Select the same settings that you did previously until installation completes.

3. Enable and Configure On-screen display settings

Now open MSI Afterburner. By default, a shortcut is created in Desktop. If you don’t see the shortcut and you don’t know how to open. Click on Start or press Windows Key on the keyboard and type in MSI Afterburner and then click on the application to open it. In the Application, open the settings by clicking on the cogwheel icon.

In the Settings, click on the Monitoring tab. In this section, you will select what hardware monitoring you want to display in the overlay. By default, there are already selected hardware. Enabled hardware monitor will display with a black check on the right side like below:

To enable a hardware monitor, select the hardware monitor and then click on the check icon. In the Graph Columns section of the settings, make sure to check the checkbox for the Show in On-screen display. You can also change the the color of the overlay but that will be up to you.

You can just select the FPS counter but here is our suggested hardware to include in monitoring:

  1. GPU temperature – for the temperature of your graphics card
  2. GPU usage – utilization of your graphics card
  3. Memory usage – how much VRAM of the graphics card is being used by the system
  4. Core clock – core clock of the GPU is running at
  5. Power – how much power your system is using
  6. Fan tachometer – shows the RPM (Rotations per Minute) of your fans
  7. CPU temperature – shows the average temperature of all the cores of your CPU. The list will include all the cores of your CPU including the physical and logical cores. You can select individually or select this option to show average.
  8. CPU usage – utilization of the CPU
  9. CPU clock – shows the average clock speed that your CPU is running at. This is the average of all cores. You have the option to select individually from the list like the CPU Temperature.
  10. CPU power – shows how much power CPU is using
  11. RAM usage – shows how much RAM is being used
  12. Framerate – shows real-time FPS counter
  13. Framerate Min – shows the minimum frame rate
  14. Framerate Avg – shows the average frame rate
  15. Framerate Max – shows the maximum frame rate

Once you have selected all the Overlay settings that you want, you will need to configure a key to enable or disable the overlay inside the game. You would want to configure this setting before opening a game so you do not need to switch between MSI Afterburner and your game to enable or disable the overlay. Now click on the On-screen Display tab.

In the Global On-Screen Display hotkeys section, set the keyboard buttons that you want for the specific functions. For some reason, you need to configure all three for the toggle function to work. In my sample, I used F10, F11, and F12. After that, click on Apply and then click on OK button.

Now open your game whatever it is and the Overlay should be displayed on the corner of the monitor like shown below:
