How to omit the page number from the first page of a word 2013 document without using sections

Normally, the first page, or cover page, of a document does not have a page number or other header or footer text. You can avoid putting a page number on the first page using sections, but there is an easier way to do this.

If you don’t plan to use sections in any other part of your document, you may want to avoid using them completely. We will show you how to easily take the page number off the cover page and start the page numbering at one on the second page of your document by simply using a footer (or a header) and changing one setting.

Click the Page Layout tab.

In the Page Setup section of the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog box launcher icon in the lower, right corner of the section.

On the Page Setup dialog box, click the Layout tab and select the Different first page check box in the Headers and footers section so there is a check mark in the box. Click OK.

You’ll notice there is no page number on the first page of your document now.

However, you might want the second page to be page one of your document, only to find it is currently page two.

To change the page number on the second page to one, click the Insert tab.

In the Header & Footer section of the Insert tab, click Page Number and select Format Page Numbers from the drop-down menu.

On the Page Number Format dialog box, select Start at in the Page numbering section. Enter 0 in the edit box and click OK.

This allows the second page of your document to be labeled as page one.

You can use the drop-down menu on the Format Page Numbers button in the Header & Footer section of the Insert tab to add page numbers to your document as well. Easily insert formatted page numbers at the top or bottom of the page or in the page margins. Use the same menu to remove page numbers from your document.

Page numbers are helpful for remembering where you have left off when reading, or when you need to reference something to someone else. Different teachers and professors often have their own preferred way for receiving documents. Microsoft Word 2013 makes this simple to accommodate by offering a wide range of options for customizing the appearance of your document.

So it is not simply a matter of deleting a page number from a specific page – you need to adjust the entire page numbering mechanism. Step 1: Open the document for which you wish to remove the page number on the first page.

Step 2: Click the Insert tab at the top of the window.

Step 3: Click the Page Number drop-down menu in the Header & Footer section of the ribbon.

Step 5: Make sure that the Design tab under Header & Footer Tools is selected at the top of the window.

Step 6: Check the box to the left of Different First Page in the Options section of the window.

If you want your page numbering to start on the second page with “2”, then you can stop here. However, if you want to start with “1” on the second page, continue below.

Step 7: Click the Page Number drop-down menu in the Header & Footer section of the window, then click Format Page Numbers.

Step 8: Click the box to the left of Start at, then change the value to “0”.

Step 9: Click the OK button to apply your changes.

  • If your required page layout dictates that you include other information in the header, such as your last name or the document title, then simply click inside the header and type the information that you want to include on each page.
  • If you need to remove page numbers from your document entirely, then you can click the Header & Footer tab, click the Page Numbers button, then select the Remove Page Numbers option from the bottom of the dropdown menu.
  • Page numbering will always start on the first page in MS Word by default, as indicated by the fact that completing the steps above without changing the starting page number will start the numbering with “2.” If you have to reach a minimum page count and your page one or cover page isn’t supposed to be included in that count, then starting your number with “0” will give you a more accurate count of your document pages that actually count towards your total.

  • Many institutions have specific requirements for where page numbers should be located. When setting page numbers and specifying your first page number, pay attention to whether you need to have your page numbers and other header information at the top of the page or the bottom of the page.
  • Your page count will adjust automatically when your content forces a new page or when you insert page breaks.

I am writing a document and it is required that the first page (title page) has no page number and the second page starts with page 2. I don’t know how to remove the footed only in page 1 and leaving the footer in the rest of the pages as is. Can anyone maybe help? Many thanks

I am assuming that you already know how to set page numbers to your document.

Removing page number on the first page and starting page number from the second page is even easier than the accepted answer.

Click on Format menu and select Title page.

You will now be presented with a ‘Title pages’ dialog box. Under ‘Page numbering’ heading, select the option ‘Reset Page Numbering after title pages’. You may choose the number of title pages that you don’t want to have the page number.

First, make a copy of your document for safety purposes!

Please set so called ‘Title pages’:

And while setting page numbers in footnote:

Set it to requested value: 1

If you set the offset to “-1,” the second page (the one after the title page) will show up as “page 1” in the page number field.

The previous answers are definitely the easiest way to fix your problem. The options involving Title pages are relatively new.

The “old” way is more generic and will solve many other problems as well.

One of the greatest strengths of LibreOffice writer is its concept of styles. Styles are sets of formatting options that can be applied to individual or multiple characters, paragraphs, lists, frames, or pages. When you assign a style to one of these “objects”, it applies the formatting from the style, but also remembers that the object is formatted in that style.

Subsequently, if you change the definition of the style, every object that has that style may be updated – either manually or automatically, if auto update is selected for that style. It’s a great way to uniformly change everything that should look the same in your document at one time – like changing all subtitles to have a different font or point size.

In this case, you could define and apply a page style for the title page that has no page number. You can also change anything else about this page without affecting the other pages.

You can open the styles dialog by pressing F11.

Styles are useful for all sorts of other things like making left pages different from right pages and making all your body text a particular font and size without changing special text like headings.

If you haven’t used styles before, it takes some getting used to, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s a lot more to it as well. Styles are very powerful.

When you add page numbers to the header or footer of your document (see Working with headers and footers), Word adds page numbers for all pages of your document (including or excluding the first page, depends on the option Different first page).

To hide page numbers for some pages, you need to add formula instead of all text that you want to hide:

A paginated report can contain a page header and page footer that run along the top and bottom of each page, respectively. After you a add a header or footer, you can selectively hide it on the first and last pages of a report.

You can create and modify paginated report definition (.rdl) files in Microsoft Report Builder, Power BI Report Builder, and in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools.

To hide a page header on the first or last page

Open a report in Design view.

Right-click the page header, and then click Header Properties. The Report Header Properties dialog box opens.

Verify that Display header for this report is not selected.

In the Print options section, clear the check box for each option to hide the display on the first or last page of the report.

You can remove or make changes to headers or footers on any page in Microsoft Word. This is handy if, for example, you want to hide the header or footer on a specific page. The process is a bit different if you want to delete a header or footer on the first page of your document or on any other pages. Here’s how it works.

How to Delete a Header or Footer on the First Page of Your Document

Very often, you won’t want your header or footer to show up on the first page of your document. Usually, that’s because it’s a title page. Here’s how to remove it.

Double click the header or footer area to make it active.

This also activates the Header & Footer Tools section on Word’s Ribbon. On the Design tab of that section, select the “Different First Page” check box.

This action removes the header and footer from the first page. You can type different information there if you want, or you can just leave it blank.

How to Delete a Header or Footer on Other Pages in Your Word Document

Removing a header or footer for any page other than your first page requires a bit more work. Unfortunately, you can’t just tell Word to change the layout of a single page (and headers and footers are considered part of the layout). Word’s page layout features apply to whole sections of the document, and by default, your document is one large section.

So first, you’ll need to create a separate section in the document (even if it’s just for one page), and then you’ll need to change the page layout for that new section to landscape orientation. Here’s how.

In your document, place your cursor at the very end of the page right before the page where you want to remove the header or footer. For example, if you want to remove the header or footer on page 12, place your cursor at the end of page 11.

Switch to the “Layout” on the Ribbon, and then click the “Breaks” button.

On the dropdown menu, click the “Next Page” option.

While it’s not obvious, the action you just took created a section break where your cursor was placed, and started your new section on the next page.

Now, double-click the header or footer area (depending on what you’re removing) on the page where you want to remove it. On the Design tab in the Header & Footer Tools area of the Ribbon, click the “Link To Previous” button. Note that the button becomes de-selected. You’ve now broken the link to the previous sections header or footer.

Note: If you need to delete both a header and footer from a section, you’ll need to delete the text and break the links to the previous section for each individually.

Next, go ahead and delete the text from your header or footer.

You’re not quite done yet, though.

If you scroll through your document, you’ll notice that all the pages following that section break you created now also don’t have the header or footer you just deleted. As you might guess, you now need to create another section break, and then recreate the header or footer for the next section. This works pretty much the same as what you just did.

Place your cursor at the end of the page on which you wanted the header or footer removed—in other words, right before the first page where you want the header or footer to start again.

On the “Layout” tab, click the “Breaks” button, and then choose the “Next Page” option.

Now, activate the header or footer area on the first page of that new section. On the Design tab in the Header & Footer Tools area of the Ribbon, click the “Link To Previous” button. Again, the button becomes de-selected, because you’ve now broken the link to the header or footer area of that new section you made.

Now, all you have to do is create the header or footer you want to use for the rest of the document. If it’s the same material as in the first section of your document, you can just copy and paste it from there, and it will then appear in the rest of your document (except in the new section you created, of course). How to Add Page Numbers in Word – 3 Steps

Step 1. To insert page numbers in Word document, you can open the target Word file, click Insert tab at the top Ribbon bar. Under Insert column, you can find and click Page Number button in Header & Footer section.

How to Add Page Numbers in Word Starting from a Specific Page

What if you don’t want to start numbering from the first page or want to insert page numbers from a specific page like Page 2 or Page 3? Below is the instruction.

1. How to start numbering pages from Page 2 in Word:

Step 1. Put your mouse cursor at the header or footer area in Word document, and double-click mouse to open the Design tab of Header & Footer Tools. Alternatively, you can also click Insert -> Header or Footer -> Edit Header or Editor Footer to open Header & Footer Tools. Click Different First Page in Options section.

This will remove the page number on the first page in Word. You can then type a different text for the header or footer for the first page if you like.

Step 2. Then you can put your mouse to the second page, and click Insert -> Page Number -> Format Page Numbers. Under Page Numbering, you can set Start At to 0. This will add page numbers in Word starting from the second page.

Step 3. Click Page Number, select the location and style of page numbering to add page numbers in Word starting from Page 2.

2. How to insert page numbers starting from Page 3 or any other pages in Word:

Step 1. Go to the target page where you want to start adding page numbers. Click the first word or line to locate your mouse cursor. Then click Page Layout -> Breaks -> Next Page on the Ribbon.

Step 2. Then click the page you want to start to add page number and click Insert -> Page Numbers to choose a page number style.

Step 3. Highlight the page number of the page that you want to start adding page number, and unclick Link to Previous option at the top.

Step 4. Highlight that page number again and click Page Number -> Format Page Numbers. Set 1 at Start At under Page Numbering. And it will add page numbers in Word starting from the specific page and start from 1.

Step 5. At last, you can highlight the page number of the first page in the Word document and delete the page number. Then the page numbers before that specific page will be deleted.

Step I: So in order to remove Header and Footer from a single page, the user first need to create a section. Then the user will have to change the layout of the page of that particular section to landscape orientation. In order to do so, the user should place the cursor at the end of the page just before that page which user wants to convert to landscape mode.

Step II: Next user should switch the tab to Layout tab on the Word ribbon.

Step III: From the Layout tab click on the Breaks button. Then a drop-down menu will appear. From the drop-down menu select the Next Page option.

Step IV: This will create a section break where the user has placed the cursor. Now double click on the Header or Footer area from the page you want to remove them to make it active. Then go to the Design tab in the Header & Footer area of the Ribbon. Now click on the Link To the Previous button. This will make the button de-selected. Now, user has broken the link of that particular section of the document to the previous section’s header or footer.

Step V: Now user can easily remove the Header and Footer from the page by just deleting the Header or the Footer from the page.

This will remove the Header or Footer from the page. But work is not complete yet. On further scrolling down the page, users will see that Header and Footer from all the pages following the section are removed. So, now the user will have to create a new section and then recreate the Header and Footer for that section.

In order to do so, the user should place the cursor at the end of the page just before that page which user wants to convert to landscape mode.

Next user should switch the tab to Layout tab on the Word ribbon.

When you write a research essay in MLA format, page numbers will be included in the running head of your paper, the in-text citations, and on your Works Cited page. Page numbers in running head

When you write an essay in MLA, numbers marking the pages should appear in a running head at the top of your paper.

Formatting a running head

A running head should appear ½ inch from the top and 1 inch from the right side of each page of your essay. A running head in MLA should follow the last name page number format, listing your last name followed by the number of the page.

  • In MLA, number the pages using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). Do not use a comma or “p.” in the running head.
  • If you are including a title/cover page for your paper (refer to your instructor’s guidelines), do not put the running head on your cover page. The running head will begin on the first page of your essay.
  • You must include the running head on the Works Cited page.
  • You must include the running head on the Works Consulted page (if applicable – always ask your instructor before including a Works Consulted page).

Page numbers in in-text citations

Besides the running head of your paper, you will also need to include page numbers in the in-text citations of your paper.

Formatting page numbers

Use page numbers in your in-text citations whenever possible to make finding the sources of your information easier for the reader. In-text citations follow the last name page number format, enclosed in parentheses.

This is especially important for situations like citing a journal article in MLA, or other sources that are part of a larger work, so that your audience can easily locate the particular source you are citing. Page numbers on a Works Cited page should look like this:

Lesson 17: Headers, Footers, and Page Numbers

Introduction

The header is a section of the document that appears in the top margin, while the footer is a section of the document that appears in the bottom margin. Headers and footers generally contain additional information such as page numbers, dates, an author’s name, and footnotes, which can help keep longer documents organized and make them easier to read. Text entered in the header or footer will appear on each page of the document.

To create a header or footer:

In our example, we want to display the author’s name at the top of each page, so we’ll place it in the header.

    Double-click anywhere on the top or bottom margin of your document. In our example, we’ll double-click the top margin.

To insert a preset header or footer:

Word has a variety of preset headers and footers you can use to enhance your document’s design and layout. In our example, we’ll add a preset header to our document.

    Select the Insert tab, then click the Header or Footer command. In our example, we’ll click the Header command.

If you want to delete a Content Control field, right-click it and select Remove Content Control from the menu that appears.

Editing headers and footers

After you close the header or footer, it will still be visible, but it will be locked. Simply double-click a header or footer to unlock it, which will allow you to edit it.

Design tab options

When your document’s header and footer are unlocked, the Design tab will appear on the right side of the Ribbon, giving you various editing options:

    Hide the first-page header and footer: For some documents, you may not want the first page to show the header and footer, like if you have a cover page and want to start the page numbering on the second page. If you want to hide the first page header and footer, check the box next to Different First Page.

To insert the date or time into a header or footer:

Sometimes it’s helpful to include the date or time in the header or footer. For example, you may want your document to show the date when it was created.

On the other hand, you may want to show the date when it was printed, which you can do by setting it to update automatically. This is useful if you frequently update and print a document because you’ll always be able to tell which version is the most recent.

    Double-click anywhere on the header or footer to unlock it. Place the insertion point where you want the date or time to appear. In our example, we’ll place the insertion point on the line below the author’s name.

Adding page numbers

Word can automatically label each page with a page number and place it in a header, footer, or side margin. When you need to number some pages differently, Word allows you to restart page numbering.

To add page numbers to a document:

In our example, we’ll add page numbering to our document’s footer.

    Double-click anywhere on the header or footer to unlock it. If you don’t already have a header or footer, you can double-click near the top or bottom of the page. The Design tab will appear on the right side of the Ribbon.

Alternatively, you can add page numbers to the header or footer by clicking the Page Number command and then selecting Top of Page or Bottom of Page. If you have an existing header or footer, it will be removed and replaced with the page number.

To restart page numbering:

Word allows you to restart page numbering on any page of your document. You can do this by inserting a section break and then selecting the number you want to restart the numbering with. In our example, we’ll restart the page numbering for our document’s Works Cited section.

    Place the insertion point at the top of the page you want to restart page numbering for. If there is text on the page, place the insertion point at the beginning of the text.

If you are working on a paper, you probably don’t need page numbers on the first two pages (which should be description and catalog), but want to start numbering from the third page. So how to do it? Can you insert pages numbers from the middle of a Word document?

For this purpose, you can make use of the Breaks.

1. First, put your cursor before the first character in the second page. Click LayoutBreaks and choose Next Page.

2. Repeat this process. Put the cursor before the first character in the third page. Select Next Page in Section Breaks, then click InsertPage NumberFormat Page Numbers

3. Set the Page numbering as Start at 1, click OK.

4. Double click the header or the footer of the third page, click Link to Previous in Design to disable it.

5. Then click InsertPage Number to choose a pattern deciding where to insert the page number.

6. Now it has been applied to your document. Just delete the page numbers of the first two pages.

Change Page Numbers in Acrobat: Overview

By default, Acrobat automatically applies Arabic numerals to pages in a PDF document. The first page of the document is page 1. You can change page numbers in Acrobat within a PDF. For example, you can omit numbering from a title page. You can then start page numbering from the second page in the PDF. To change page numbers in Acrobat, open a multi-page PDF. Then display the Page Thumbnails panel within the Navigation Pane.

To omit page numbering from a title page, first click the cover page thumbnail in the Page Thumbnails panel. Next, click the “Options” button at the top of the Page Thumbnails panel. Then choose “Page Labels…” from the drop-down menu.

In the “Page Numbering” dialog box, click the “From” option button. Then enter “1” in both the “From” and “To” text boxes. This lets Acrobat know that you only want to apply the selected numbering to the first page of the document. Select the “Begin a new section” option button in the “Numbering” section. Then choose “None” from the “Style” drop-down menu to not have a page number appear on the cover page. Then click the “OK” button. Acrobat applies your change and the second page of the PDF becomes page 1. Notice how the thumbnail images change to reflect your choice.

To change change page numbers in Acrobat within the rest of the PDF, click the thumbnail image of the second page in the PDF. Again, choose “Page Labels…” from the “Options” drop-down menu at the top of the Page Thumbnails panel. Enter a page range from 1 to the last page of your document into the “From” and “To” fields. Remember that the title page doesn’t have a number, so page 1 is now the second page of the PDF.

Next, click the “Begin new section” option button, and choose a numbering style from the “Style” drop-down menu. For example, you can choose Roman numerals instead of Arabic numbering. You can prefix characters to the numbering by typing them into the “Prefix” text box. You can choose at which number to being numbering for a page, if desired, by typing the starting number into the “Start” text box. After making your selections, then click the “OK” button. Acrobat applies your choices and changes the page numbers of your PDF.

The page numbers begin at 1 by default in Excel. However, for example, there has already been a cover page, and you want to start the page number at 2 in your worksheet, how could you solve it?     Start page number at 2 (or different number) in Excel

    This method will guide you to insert page numbers which are starting at 2 or any different number in a worksheet. Please do as follows:

    1. Enable the specified worksheet you will insert page numbers, and click Insert > Header & Footer. See screenshot:

    2. Go ahead to click Design > Page Number. See screenshot:

    Now the page numbers are inserted at the header.

    3. Click out the header box, and then click the anchor at the bottom-right corner of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab. See screenshot:

    4. In the popping Page Setup dialog box, under Page tab, please type 2 or any different number in the First page number box, and click the OK button. See screenshot:

    Now you will see the page numbers start at 2 or any different number as you specified in the specified worksheet.

    I’m developing an electronic invoicing system, and one of our features is generating PDFs of the invoices, and mailing them. We have multiple templates for invoices, and will create more later, so we decided to use HTML templates, generate HTML document, and then convert it to PDF. But we’re facing a problem with wkhtmltopdf, that as far as I know (I’ve been Googleing for days to find the solution) we cannot simply both use HTML as header/footer, and show page numbers in them.

    In a bug report (or such) ( http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/issues/detail?id=140 ) I read that with JavaScript it is achievable this combo. But no other information on how to do it can be found on this page, or elsewhere.

    It is, of course not so important to force using JavaScript, if with wkhtmltopdf some CSS magic could work, it would be just as awesome, as any other hackish solutions.

    You can now choose to sort by Trending, which boosts votes that have happened recently, helping to surface more up-to-date answers.

    Trending is based off of the highest score sort and falls back to it if no posts are trending.

    Actually it’s much simpler than with the code snippet. You can add the following argument on the command line: –footer-center [page]/[topage] .

    Like richard mentioned, further variables are in the Footers and Headers section of the documentation.

    Among a few other parameters, the page number and total page number are passed to the footer HTML as query params, as outlined in the official docs:

    . the [page number] arguments are sent to the header/footer html documents in GET fashion.

    So the solution is to retrieve these parameters using a bit of JS and rendering them into the HTML template. Here is a complete working example of a footer HTML:

    substitutePdfVariables() is called in body onload . We then get each supported variable from the query string and replace the content in all elements with a matching class name.

    To show the page number and total pages you can use this javascript snippet in your footer or header code:

    Of course pdfkit_page_current and pdfkit_page_count will be the two elements that show the numbers.

    There are also more available variables which can be substituted other than page numbers for use in Headers/Footers.

    Footers And Headers:
    Headers and footers can be added to the document by the –header-* and –footer* arguments respectively. In header and footer text string supplied to e.g. –header-left, the following variables will be substituted.

    • [page] Replaced by the number of the pages currently being printed
    • [frompage] Replaced by the number of the first page to be printed
    • [topage] Replaced by the number of the last page to be printed
    • [webpage] Replaced by the URL of the page being printed
    • [section] Replaced by the name of the current section

    As an example specifying –header-right “Page [page] of [topage]”, will result in the text “Page x of y” where x is the number of the current page and y is the number of the last page, to appear in the upper left corner in the document.

    Headers and footers can also be supplied with HTML documents. As an example one could specify –header-html header.html, and use the following content in header.html:
