Sounds like the Administrator account may not be enable yet on your PC. You can enable the admin account by running an elevated command prompt and type in exactly:
net user /add Administrator /active:yes

When you open Chrome from the command-line, it opens the default or last opened Chrome profile. As of now, there is no way to open a specific Chrome profile. If you want to open a specific Chrome profile, I recommend you make that profile the default one in Windows. Also, as of now, there is no way to open multiple URLs from the command line.

Learn how to open a new Google Chrome window with a custom URL and a specific window size launching it from the command prompt in Windows 10.

Before proceeding with the solution, we need to understand the problem. If you read carefully the documentation of Chromium or use a list of all the options that you can setup on Chromium in the command line, you will quickly find that you can launch Chrome (chromium) with a specific window size using the –window-size flag, for example, to open chrome with a custom size, you would simply run the following command in the command prompt:

Pitifully, with a default installation of Chrome, when it starts, it will have the last window size that the last user had, not the one we’re specifying on the command 🤔. This happen because we’re not changing the default user-data-dir property on the command as well. The user data directory contains profile data such as history, bookmarks, and cookies, as well as other per-installation local state. Each profile is a subdirectory (often Default) within the user data directory. This can be changed with the –user-data-dir flag on the command.

Opening a URL

Now, let’s explain what you came for, ideally, the command should just open a new URL in a window with a custom size. We would simply change the –user-data-dir to a custom directory that we will create in the desktop in this case, specify a framed window using the –chrome-frame flag and the URL with –app :

In many operating systems, including Linux, Windows, and Mac, a command prompt is where you enter commands to a command-line interpreter application. In layman’s terms, you enter commands into the command prompt, and then the interpreter command prompt performs those commands.

You may be new to Chromebooks or the Chrome operating system, but when you’ve become used to having the option of using the command prompt, fret not. We’ve got your back.

Command Prompt – Chrome Shell (crosh)

The command prompt on a Chromebook is accessible from the Google Chrome Browser, which comes pre-installed. Okay, so, you’re probably thinking ‘well, how do I get there?’ It’s actually quite simple: you’ll issue commands using the crosh shell. A “shell” is an interface to the operating system that enables you to enter commands, run applications, and so on.

Accessing the crosh shell

To see the basic crosh shell commands available on the Chromebook, you’d type “help” after the crosh command prompt. When you’re in need of more advanced commands type “help_advanced” instead. The advanced commands get used for debugging purposes.

Why would you want to use the command prompt or crosh shell on your Chromebook? Well, if your just curious and want to poke around on your Chromebook device, there are various commands you can run to check on things. Like what? In the basic help portion of crosh, you can use the ping command or the top command.

The “top” command shows you the system information and all the processes that are running during the current session. This is what it looks like when we type the “help” command in crosh on our Chromebook;

Help_advanced command

To do more advanced poking around, yes, that’s right you’ll need to type the help_advanced command and choose one of the commands that are listed on your Chromebook to check those specifics.

Even if you’re not a developer and don’t plan on debugging the system, crosh is useful for getting a status update on your Chromebook.

Some of the commands you may want to run are checking on the battery information of your Chromebook. You can make sure your battery’s firmware is up to date and trigger an update from crosh if you wish.

You could also test your battery to make sure it’s not having any health issues and that it’s working properly. Are you having connectivity problems? With help_advanced you’ll find command to enable you to can see what the connectivity status of your Chromebook is and work on getting things back up and running.

There are some useful debugging commands such as the ones listed above but most crosh commands are intended mostly for developers but can be useful to Chromebook power users as well.

Example crosh commands

The crosh commands are generally pretty intuitive. Here are some examples to get you started but be sure to run help and help_advanced.

  • help – As mentioned above, issue this command for help using crosh.
  • help_advanced – And, again, as mentioned above this is the advanced help command.
  • connectivity – Shows your connectivity status, which can be helpful if you’re having local network or Internet connectivity issues.
  • battery_test – This command shows the battery discharge rate for a number of seconds you specify. For example, you could set it to test the battery for 600 seconds: battery_test 600
  • memory_test – Tests free memory on your Chromebook.
  • top – Shows you what Chrome plug-ins, extensions, tabs, and so on are using resources.
  • ping – The standard ping command that’s useful for network troubleshooting.
  • sound – This command records audio using your Chromebook’s microphone then plays the sound back for you and you can save the audio as a file.
  • ssh – If you need to ssh into your web server or something, you can do it from your Chromebook using the ssh command.

Like with all pieces of software, the default settings in Chrome won’t please everybody. Most people will only need to change settings normally accessible through the menu. Others know about a hidden page, accessible by typing chrome://flags/ in the address bar.

But you have a third option to change Chrome’s behavior.

What Are Chrome Command-Line Switches?

These are simply parameters passed to an executable file. You can test them now. Open a command line prompt: press the Windows logo key, type “cmd” and open Command Prompt.

Important: for some switches to take effect you need to close all Chrome windows before launching the executable with the parameters passed to it. Also, some of these command-line switches will work in Mac and Linux too.

This shows a frames-per-second counter, just like those you can see in 3D video games. It only counts frames when the screen is updated (movement, graphical changes).

This launches Chrome in incognito mode which leaves no traces of your browsing history. You can also launch in this mode by right-clicking on the Chrome shortcut from the taskbar.

You can also chain switches. This means that you can use more than one parameter to pass to the executable. For example, you can use chrome –incognito –no-referrers .

This will restore all the tabs you had in Chrome when you last closed it. It’s true that you can set an option in Chrome’s settings as well to get this behavior. But remember, you can create two shortcuts on your desktop, with different purposes. For example, one where you open a single new tab and another where you restore the previous session.

As the name suggests, this disables all extensions and is useful for people that don’t use them. It may also be useful for less tech-savvy people as well. Some sites take advantage of people and trick them into installing unwanted and maybe malicious extensions. Imagine adding this to the Chrome shortcut of your grandmother’s PC. Now, no site will be able to add those extensions again and redirect her search traffic to some obscure site.

If you’re fed up with the notifications that appear in the top-left side of your browser, you can disable them entirely.

Note that you shouldn’t use this if you actually activated in-browser notifications for things such as Facebook or Gmail.

This forces the browser to open its window in maximized mode. It’s useful on versions of Windows where, for some reason, Chrome won’t remember its window settings.

Disables, in the current session, synchronization of passwords, bookmarks, history and everything else that’s normally synced to your Google account.

Useful if you messed with the wrong flag in “chrome://flags” and now your browser won’t start anymore. Launch Chrome with this switch, go to the flags page, reset settings to default and then start normally (without the switch).

Completely disables sound in Chrome.

How to Add a Command-Line Switch to the Chrome Shortcut

Right-click on your desktop, and go to “New” and then “Shortcut.”

This assumes Windows is installed to the C drive. Browse to “This PC -> C -> Program Files (x86) -> Google -> Chrome -> Application.” Select the Chrome executable, click “OK,” and then on “Next.”

Go to the shortcut created on your desktop. Right-click and select “Properties.” In the “Target” field enter your desired command-line switches. It’s important to add them after the quotes! If you add within the quotes, you will get an error.


You can consult this website for a comprehensive list of Chrome command-line switches. Note, however, that not all of them are compatible with the Windows version. Some are for mobile, others for Linux, others Chromium specific. Also, software is developed rapidly, and some switches are simply discarded in newer versions. Here’s what I’m using to open a URL or a file with Google Chrome into incognito mode from Git bash (provided with Git for Windows):

1. Open System Variables

  • Hit + R at the same time to get command prompt.
  • Then type sysdm.cpl and hit the Enter key.
  • Go to Advanced 1 and select Environmental Variables 2
  • Select Path 3 from System variables and click on Edit button 4 .

Keep this window opened (while get the chrome.exe folder path).

2. Get the chrome.exe folder path

Right click (or left if you have your mouse as left-handed) the Chrome icon 5 (the one you use to open it) and select Properties 7 . Usually this method opens more Chrome actions so locate Google Chrome option 6 and right-click on it and click on Properties 7 .

On the Shortcut 8 tab select the folder path from Start in: 9 (Commonly %programfiles(x86)%\Google\Chrome\Application )

3. Adding Google Chrome folder path to Environment variables

Click on the New button 10 from previously opened Edit environment variable window and paste the Google Chrome folder path into the new added line 11 (delete the double quotes if exist at the beginning or the end of the path) and click on all the OK buttons from the opened windows.

4. Add custom command to bash

Open the Git bash terminal and edit (or create) the .bashrc file with your prefered text editor (Visual Studio code in this example)

Append the code from below. You can rename the function name ( chromeIt in this example) to your needs.

If you don’t want incognito mode remove the –incognito parameter.

Very important note: Verify that your line ending is set as UNIX (LF) 12 . If you don’t know how to do it search into google.

Save the .bashrc file and reload it (using the Git bash terminal):

You cannot perform the task you describe manually, but you can perform it using WebDriver automation.

Chrome can be remote controlled using an API called WebDriver (part of Selenium 2 automating suite). WebDrive has bindings for various programming languages, including e.g. JavaScript and Python.

It automates the keyboard actions you would otherwise perform to save the page manually (literally sends those key signals to OS). As a side effect of it being used in another project of mine, it’s been tested on various linux flavors: Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc – and works fine on all of them. Fix Chrome Not Opening

The problem can be with your operating system or the browser. You can try these methods and see what works for you.


This is possibly the easiest solution that you can try. It has worked out for me on countless occasions, and it may work for you as well. Just Restart your computer and try opening Chrome again.

Date & Time

Sometimes, the wrong date and time can cause your apps to not work properly. Check the date and time and if they are wrong, follow the steps below to fix them:

Step-1: Right-click where you see the date and time on your taskbar.

Step-2: Select Adjust date/time.

Step-3: Make sure the toggles for Set the time automatically and Set the time zone automatically are turned On.

Step-4: Press Sync now.

Reinstall App

Step-1: Go to the Start Menu and click on the Settings cog. (Shortcut keys: Win + I)

Step-2: Select Apps.

Step-3: In the Apps & features section, scroll down and locate the Google Chrome app.

Step-4: Click on the app. Select Uninstall.

Step-5: Click on Uninstall again.

Step-6: Restart your computer.

Step-7: Use this link to download Chrome again.

Fix Chrome Not Opening by Renaming Icon

Step-1: Open File Explorer. (Shortcut keys: Win + E)

Step-2: In the bar at the top, add the following path and click Enter:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application
If you get an error, try this path instead:
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application

Step-3: Locate the Chrome icon. Right-click on it and select Rename.

Step-4: Type a new name, and it can be anything you want (Chomexyz, for example). Once you do, press Enter.

Step-5: Right-click on the icon again, hover the cursor over Send to, and select Desktop (create shortcut)

Step-6: Go to your Desktop and delete the old Chrome icon.

Step-7: Right-click on the new Chrome icon that you just created on the desktop and click Rename. Change the name to what it was previously called, i.e., Chrome.

Step-8: Restart your computer and try opening Chrome again.

Step-9: If Chrome is now working properly, right-click on the Chrome icon in your taskbar.

Step-10: Select Unpin from Taskbar.

Step-11: Drag the new Chrome icon (available on the desktop) to the taskbar. This will pin it here.

Compatibility Settings

Step-1: Go to your desktop and locate the Chrome icon.

Step-2: Right-click on the icon and select Properties.

Step-3: Click on the Compatibility tab.

Step-4: Click on Run compatibility troubleshooter.

Step-5: Check if Chrome works now.

Step-6: If it still doesn’t, open the Compatibility tab in Properties again.

Step-7: Check the box. Run this program in compatibility mode in the Compatibility mode section.

Step-8: Press OK.

Step-9: If Chrome still doesn’t open even after trying step-4 and step-7, move on to the next steps.

Step-10: In Properties, in the compatibility tab, under the Settings section, check the boxes for Disable fullscreen optimizations and Register this program for restart.


It seems that enabling the Autohide taskbar in settings causes problems for Chrome. If you disable this feature, Chrome will work normally. To disable this function:

  1. Open Settings using shortcut keys Win + I.
  2. Select Personalization
  3. Select Taskbar from the left pane.
  4. Turn the toggle for Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode Off.

Network Commands

  1. Type cmd in the Start menu search bar.
  2. When the command prompt option shows, click on Run as administrator
  3. You will be asked, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Click Yes.
  4. Type the following command and press Enter: netsh int ip reset C:\RESETLOG.TXT
  5. Now type this command and press Enter: netsh winsock reset
  6. Now type this command and press Enter: ipconfig /flushdns
  7. Type exit and press Enter.
  8. Restart your computer and try opening Chrome again.

Step-1: Open Settings using the shortcut keys Win + I.

    Accessing the command line in Chrome OS

    The command line in Chrome OS is called the Chrome Shell, CROSH for short. Where you access Terminal in Linux or Mac or CMD in Windows, you don’t have to do any of that with Chrome OS.

    To access it all you need do is press Ctrl + Alt + T on your Chromebook. You can use some very basic commands from here or type ‘shell’ to access a version of Bash. If you want to dig deeper, you will need to switch into Developer Mode and use Bash from there. This tutorial is looking at CROSH so will concentrate on that.

    Here are some basic commands you can use in the Chrome OS shell. Some of these require Bash so it’s best to log into that first.

    • Help : shows the general commands you can use in the shell.
    • Help_advanced : list debugging and advanced commands you can use in the shell.
    • Help : verify what a command does before you do it.
    • Exit : exits the shell.
    • Set_time : manually set the time in Chrome OS.
    • Uptime : check how long the Chromebook has been running. It also shows logged in users.
    • Sound record 10 : record audio input from the microphone for 10 seconds. Time can be adjusted.
    • xset m : Manually adjust mouse acceleration.
    • xset r : Manually adjust autorepeat behavior of the keyboard.
    • Connectivity: checks network status
    • Inputcontrol : adjust touchpad and mouse controls on compatible devices.
    • Top : shows all running processes on the system.
    • Battery_test TIME : check the battery info and how much battery is used up in a given time. For example, ‘Battery_test 60’ asks the system how much battery is used every minute (60 seconds).
    • Memory_test : runs tests on available memory. Memory used by Chrome OS is not tested.
    • Storage_status : provides information on SMART storage devices.
    • Storage_test_1 : Performs low level SMART device test.
    • Storage_test_2 : Performs deep level SMART device test.
    • Ping URL : performs a Packet Internet GroPe to check connectivity.
    • Network_diag : performs network diagnostics
    • Tracepath : performs a trace of a route, same as traceroute.
    • Route : displays routing tables.
    • Ssh : established an SSH connection to a given address.
    • Ssh_forget_host : forget a previously connected SSH host.
    • Set_apn : sets an APN for cell connected Chromebooks.
    • Set_cellular_ppp : set PPP username and password for cellular connections.
    • Tpm_status: Trusted Platform Module status.
    • Upload_crashes : upload crash reports to Google.
    • Systrace: start system tracing for system debugging

    Unless you’re having problems with your Chromebook, there should be no need to ever use the shell or bash in Chrome OS. However, those of us who love all things technical are going to want to have an explore to see what you can do. Some of these commands will be useful for troubleshooting but to be honest, the Chromebook doesn’t go wrong very often and there are lots of software tools that can get the job done too.

    That said, CROSH is a decent way to access under the hood of your Chromebook. Your options are purposely limited as there isn’t much to test or adjust within Chrome OS and that is intentional. The purpose of Chromebooks is to provide simple, reliable internet-enabled applications for light use. I think Chrome OS delivers on that and is an excellent option for people who don’t require a full laptop.

    For the geeks among us there are multiple versions of Linux, Mac OS and Windows 10 if we want to get technical. For everyone else, Chrome OS balances ease of use with decent features for a good price.
