Today we’re taking a look at how to record your screen on a iOS device. Keep in mind that some of these techniques require jailbroken devices or other external hardware. Even so, we’re confident that everyone will find one way to record their iPhone’s or iPad’s screen.

Record your iPhone, iPad screen activity

How to record a video of your iphone or ipad’s screen

There are a few ways to do this, but some of them might not be for everyone. Depending on how you want to record your screen and how much money you are willing to invest, you will find your solution here. We’ll start off with the harder and more expensive solution that require external hardware and special preparations in order for the user the record his iPhone’s screen. There are two obvious methods to accomplish this task:

Use an external device to record your iPhone’s screen

This can be anything from another phone to a video camera. But be careful how you place the camera as to not have a reflection off the iPhone or iPad screen. Try using a tripod to keep the camera still and also keep the iOS device in one place for the entire duration of the process. Although this method might not be too easy, it does however offer pretty good results.

Use a capture card to record your screen

Both the iPhone and the iPad offer users the possibility to add an external monitor. And this is a great way to record your screen. All you need to do is mount an external video capture card between the iOS device and the secondary screen. So, the video signal first will travel via HDMI or other interface to the capture card and from the card to the secondary screen. This will allow you to capture a video of the screen, but some capture cards are pretty expensive.

Use dedicated software

How to record a video of your iphone or ipad’s screen

If your device is jailbroken, then you don’t have anything to worry. The simplest and easiest solution is to use the Display Recorder app available in the Cydia or iTunes store and you will be able to capture the video of your screen at the same resolution as the device has. This is no different from apps that do video capture on Android and they are very simple to use, as they work in background and you can use your iPhone or iPad normally.

Another way to record your iPhone or iPad screen is to use apps that are designed for creating presentations or for capturing specific content like web pages or similar. Keep in mind that these apps do not capture anything else than what they are designed to, so your options will be limited. They do work great if you are trying to record a presentation or make a video of certain websites. Here is a list of such apps:

  • Doodlecast Pro
  • ReplayNote
  • ShowMe Interactive Whiteboard
  • Explain Everything
  • ScreenChomp
  • Educreations Interactive Whiteboard
  • UXRecorder

There are several methods to help record videos for iPhone / iPad on PC. Software programs such as X-Mirage, Reflector2 and Apowersoft iPhone / iPad Recorder all promote this feature. They combine AirPlay and a screen capture tool in a single program, but all of these programs charge a fee. If you are looking for a free app, just combine AirPlay for free with another free screen capture tool. LonelyScreen software, for example, is a simple, free AirPlay software that helps you make videos for iPhone and iPad quickly.

We’ve all been spending more time with our smartphones and tablets of late. You may have even taken the time to learn some pro tips while you were sheltering in place. When you discover a neat trick you might want to share it with someone by sending a screenshot.

Taking a screenshot on your iPhone or iPad is a great way to capture a moment. Maybe you saw a picture on Instagram you want to save or you need to send a friend a picture of an email. The problem with a screenshot is it only captures still images or single frames from a video.

If you’re trying to give someone a step-by-step tutorial on how to do anything on your phone or tablet, you’ll wind up sending a ton of pictures. Fortunately, Apple offers a better option for you than the typical screenshot. In just a few simple steps, you can activate and record all of the actions that are shown on your screen.

To activate screen recording, you first need to go into your iPhone settings and navigate to the control center. Once inside the control center, select customize controls and press the green plus sign next to the option that says screen recording.

Once you’ve added screen recording to your repertoire of tools in the control center, you’ll be able to access the screen recording option with the swipe of a finger. To view the control center’s main screen all you need to do is unlock your phone and swipe up from the bottom of the screen or down from the top depending on your model iPhone.

iOS always get special attention from all kind of people. This is because of having such a nice interface as well as awesome features. Any type of people can opt for iOS as iOS is developed for students, businessman, office employees and all the other people. It doesn’t matter what your field is but you can certainly fit with iOS in your working place. There are many offices around the world, which used iOS devices such as iPad to do all the things with portability.

There are many vloggers (video blogger) and YouTuber, who often use iPhone to record videos. Although, a low tech iPhone comes with an 8MP rear camera, which is really low as compared to Android mobiles, but still the video quality is really awesome and this is why most of the people use iPhone camera to capture photos and record videos. On the other hand, iPhone offers couple of options to tweak the video. The latest iPhones have even more features than older iPhones such as iPhone 5S or 4S.

How to record a video of your iphone or ipad’s screen

It doesn’t matter which mobile you use, but if you wish to record a video, you must have to turn on your display to keep recording. If you turn off the display or lock down your phone, the recording will be stopped. This is a common thing for all mobile users.

However, iPhone has an option that will let you record video while screen is locked or off. You can use any iPhone to get this so called feature. Basically, this is not a feature – there is no confirmation from any reliable source though. However, it seems this is a bug, which is assisting iOS 9.3.3 and 9.3.2 users to record video when iPhone display is turned off or mobile is locked. That implies, you do not have to install any third party app to get things done.

Record Video While iPhone Screen is Locked

This is very easy and not much time consuming as well. Like said before, you do not have to download any third party software for this trick. Also, it doesn’t matter whether you have PIN lock or Fingerprint lock, this trick will work with both of them.

At first, make sure that your iPhone is locked. Then press the power button to light up your device. Following that, press the camera button on your lock screen and slide up till the half way. Hold it there and do not let it go. Use your other hand to switch to VIDEO mode to record video and tap the start recording button. It should start the recording right away.

Following that, press the home button twice and do it thrice. That implies, you have to press the home button 6 times (3 * 2). Now, wait for a few moments, when your iPhone will go to sleep.

That’s it! To stop recording, just unlock your device.

For a brief demonstration, do check out this video,

If you’ve got a Mac handy, you can connect your iPhone or iPad with a cable and record your device’s screen that way:

iOS 11, however, lets you record the screen directly on your device, keeping your Mac out of the equation entirely. Here’s how it works.

How to enable screen recording in iOS 11

You’ll start and stop your recordings from Control Center. First we’ll enable the button, then explain what happens when you press it.

  1. Launch the Settings app in iOS 11.
  2. Tap Control Center.

Tap the plus sign next to Screen Recording to add it to your Include list if it’s not there already.

How to record your iPhone or iPad’s screen in iOS 11

Now that it’s set up, anytime you want to record your screen, it’s just a swipe and a tap away.

  1. Open Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Screen Recording button. It looks like a big dot within a circle and changes from white to red when recording.

Exit Control Center by swiping it back down or just tapping the down-facing arrow at the top of the screen.

  • Swipe up to open Control Center when you’re finished recording.
  • Tap the Screen Recording button.
  • Pro tip: You can also press the Home button on iPhones that have one to stop recording immediately.

A banner notification will tell you the screen recording was saved to Photos. You can tap that notification to open Photos and find it in your Camera Roll.

    Can I edit the videos?

Of course. Tap the Edit button in the top-right corner, and the video appears on a timeline. You can grab the ends and drag them a few frames to eliminate video of you starting and stopping the video in Control Center, for example. When you tap Done, Photos will offer to save your edits as a new clip.

You’re free to transfer the video to your Mac for editing in QuickTime or iMovie as well. Or you can upload it to iCloud Photo Library, your iCloud Drive, YouTube, Facebook, or send it anywhere else the Share Sheet can take you.

Can I record apps that play video?

That depends on the app. Screen Recording doesn’t work at all when you have some apps running, like Netflix for example. (Obviously recording a video of Netflix or any other streaming service would violate its terms of use.)

YouTube, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to have screen recording limitations on the videos I tested it with (this will probably change over time).

Recording your iPad screen is now much easier than ever, thanks to the introduction of screen recording technology within iPadOS. • When you’re ready to stop recording, tap the recording prompt and then tap “Stop” to confirm that this is indeed what you want to do.

Apple’s cameras have by far being one of the largest selling points of its fine range of iPhones. Sure, there are several other smartphones which have much better cameras in them at much lower prices, but the sheer comfort and ease of access with an iPhone gives it the ability to make you voluntarily utilize the camera, often excessively. Ignoring my fan-boy reviews, I love my iPhone – but hate that Apple imposes pointless restrictions on virtually every minor software customization. This annoyingly includes the silly restriction that you need to constantly keep the screen on while recording a video. Without a jailbreak, this feature is blocked by iPhone, and there’s no app in the Apple store that enables it either. Thanks to a recently discovered bug, you can finally record video with the screen turned off on iOS 9 and all iDevices that support it.

How to record a video of your iphone or ipad’s screenShutterstock

Apart from the obvious creepy forms to record someone without consent (which is absolutely illegal and punishable by law almost everywhere across the world, and morally wrong too), there are several situations where this feature may come in handy:

    • When you’re really dying out on battery and need to record a video nonetheless,
    • When your iPhone is overheating after a long video shoot/ the external temperature is ridiculously hot but you need to record a video
    • Generally saving the battery while recording a video
    • Recording a super secret spy video (that’s hopefully for a good social reason)

Although this bug is tested only on iOS 9.x by me, it should work on some older iOS too, on all devices that support it. Here’s how to do it:

    • Make sure your iPhone is locked
    • Press the lock key on the top of your iPhone to brighten it, without unlocking it completely
    • Slide the bottom right camera icon half way up, and don’t let go. Keep your finger in this way
    • Slide the camera modes to video, again keeping your finger on the camera slider mode still half way up
    • Tap the big red record button in the bottom middle of the screen; again, keeping your finger still on the camera slider mode still half way up. Don’t worry if it doesn’t show the recording happening.
    • Double press the home button three times,
    • Keep your finger still half way on the slider, until the iPhone automatically turns off its screen. This will take about 10 seconds regardless of what settings you’ve kept in the auto lock feature
    • That’s it. With the screen off, your iPhone is recording a video. To end the recording and save the video, simply unlock the iPhone

If you’re a perfectionist, you might want to trim the start or end of your video. You can edit the video and save it as a new clip – it won’t affect the original video, but will give you an edited version you can share.

    1. Find the video in the Photos app and tap it.

    2. Tap Edit on the top right of the screen.

    3. At the bottom of the screen, tap and drag the arrow at the very start of the video to the right. It will become a yellow frame.

    4. Size the frame to trim the video down to just the part you want to keep. You can press play at any time to ensure you like the edit.

What Limitations Are There for Recording Your Screen?

You can’t record everything on your iPhone 12. The biggest issue here is that you can’t record streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video. That’s because otherwise it would be possible to pirate the shows you’re streaming which would be against the terms and conditions of using the service.

For the most part though, you can record anything on your iPhone 12 including clips of games you’re playing.

Notifications and phone calls are also recorded so you may wish to switch Do Not Disturb mode on whenever you make a screen recording.

How Do You Adjust Screen Recording Settings?

In a word, you can’t. The only options you can adjust are the ability to start a Facebook Messenger broadcast instead of recording and saving to your Photos. It’s not possible to adjust the resolution or even the video quality of the clip.

Once the screen recording is saved, it is possible to trim and edit the video clip in the Photos app.

Recording and capturing the screen of an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch while in use is infinitely helpful for education, teaching, instructional guides, and what we do here at OSXDaily. If you’ve ever wondered how to record the screen of an iOS device you’ll find there are a variety of options out there, but one of the best solutions is an app named Reflector.

Cross platform compatible, Reflector allows iOS device screens to be mirrored directly onto a computer screen through AirPlay, plus it’s loaded with easy screen recording abilities with a video export option, and allows for some alternate uses like live streams over the web and even audio streaming if video isn’t needed. For this article, we’re focusing on the screen recording ability of Reflector though, which is extremely easy to use.

Capturing Videos of an iPhone / iPad Screen with Reflector

Before beginning, be sure that the Mac/PC and the iOS device to be recorded are connected to the same wi-fi network, the base requirement for AirPlay video mirroring to work.

    • Grab Reflector (free 10 minute trial available, $13 to buy) and launch the app on the Mac or PC
    • From the iPad, iPhone, or iPod, activate AirPlay, which is slightly different in new vs old versions of iOS:
      • iOS 6: Double-tap the Home button and navigate over to the AirPlay option, choose “Reflection” and flip “Mirroring” to ON, then tap Done
      • iOS 7: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to summon Control Center, select AirPlay > Reflection
    • The iOS device screen should now pop up on the Mac or Windows display, when this happens go back to the computer and pull down the “Device” menu in Reflector app
    • Choose “Start Recording” to begin recording a video of the iPad / iPhone screen, (or hit Command+R to toggle recording)

    • When finished, choose “Stop Recording” from the Device menu (or hit Command+R)

The screen recordings are high quality, provided at the same resolution and quality as the device display itself. You’ll find the video file type is saved as a .mov, which is convenient because you can then quickly launch it into QuickTime Player to trim down the video, export it as a new file type, or run it through various free video conversion apps like Miro, Handbrake, or QuickTime to convert it to a new format.

If you’re wondering what video output looks like, here is a sample video of Reflector recording the screen of an iPhone 5. You can choose to show the device frame or not, this video demonstrates this with a black iPhone as the Home Screen frame:

The resolution is greater than what is shown in the small embedded YouTube video, and you can use QuickTime or third party tools to compress or adjust the resulting movie resolution as necessary.

With how useful screen recordings are, it’s a bit curious the OS X QuickTime app can’t capture an iPhone or iPad screen directly, though it can record the screen of Macs very easily.

For those seeking a completely free solution, you could run mirroring through the Xcode iOS Simulator and record the screen with the aforementioned QuickTime ability, but to install a 4GB app that is intended for developers just to mirror a devices screen on your Mac seems a little overkill, plus Xcode is not an option for Windows PC’s. Thus, the best solution is Reflector, which has a free timed trial and is affordable enough at $13 if you decide you want to use it often.

The video recording capabilities of iPhones and iPads get better with each new model that Apple releases, which is great if you want to capture the best-looking video possible. However, the higher quality the video format is, the more storage space the video files naturally take up, which may not be good news if you’re device is short on capacity.

Typically, iPhones default to shooting video in 1080p HD at 60 frames per second. Using these settings, a minute of video takes up 100MB of your storage. If that sounds a lot and you don’t have much storage to play with, you can customize the resolution and frame rate of recorded video to reduce the file size.

The following steps show you how it’s done.

    1. Launch the Settings app on your iOS device.
    2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
    3. Tap Record Video.
    4. Select a resolution and frame rate to record video at. Note that shooting the 4K options take the most space. If you want to significantly reduce video file size, choose between 720p and 1080p HD at 30 fps.

If you have an ‌iPhone 11 or later model, you can change the video resolution and frame rate on the fly from within the Camera pp.

Next time you shoot video using the Video mode found in the menu strip below the viewfinder, notice the video resolution and frame rate separated by a dot in the top-corner of the screen.

If video quality is set to 1080p in Settings -> Camera, you can tap the resolution in the Camera interface to flip between HD (1080p) and 4K. If it’s set to 720p in Settings, tapping the format flips between 720p and 4K.

When shooting in 4K, you can tap the frame rate to switch between 24 (for low light), 30, and 60fps. If you shoot in HD (1080p) format, you can flip between 30 and 60fps, and when shooting in 720p, the frame rate is limited to 30fps.
