Netgear’s Arlo Pro camera system saves all recorded video to the cloud, but if you want local copies of those same recordings, here’s how to connect an external USB drive to your Arlo Pro system.
Keep in mind, that this new method for recording videos won’t stop the videos from saving to the cloud. Instead, connecting an external drive for local storage is merely a backup method, as the videos will save to both formats. However, if your internet connection goes out, videos will continue to save to your local storage, since the cloud will be unavailable at that point. So it’s definitely something you should set up on your Arlo Pro system.
To get started, you’ll first need a USB storage device, like a flash drive or an external hard drive. Since the Arlo Pro system relies on the FAT32 formatting system, the max storage size is 2TB. So if you have a 4TB external drive, it will only use 2TB of the space.
When ready, plug your USB storage device into one of the USB ports on the back of the Arlo Pro Base Station. There are two USB ports and it doesn’t matter which one you use.
Next, open up the Arlo app on your smartphone and you may notice a small, red icon appear. This means that the USB storage device needs formatted before it can be used. Tap on it to do so.
Tap on “Format” to confirm.
Once formatted, the device will automatically begin accepting recordings, and there’s nothing you have to do further to set it all up. However, there are some settings that you can mess with if you’d like. To access them, tap on the “Settings” tab in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Select “My Devices” at the top.
Select your Arlo Pro Base Station.
Tap on “Local Storage”.
Toggling “USB Device Recording” will enable or disable the Arlo Pro system from saving recorded video to your USB storage device. “Automatic Overwrite” dictates whether or not new video recordings will overwrite old ones when the storage device gets full.
On this same screen, you can access the USB storage device and safely eject it if you ever want to remove it. Simply tap on the arrow to the right of the USB drive.
On the next screen, tap on “Safely Eject USB Device”.

All Arlo video recordings are stored to the cloud, but you can connect a USB device to the Arlo Pro base station and use the USB device as a second location to store Arlo Wire-Free and Arlo Pro Wire-Free recordings locally. Local storage to a USB device cannot be used on its own as a substitute for cloud recording.
Only automatically triggered recordings are saved locally to the connected USB device. Manual recordings are only saved to the cloud.
If you connect a USB device, the camera records to both the cloud and the USB device. If the camera and base station are powered on, but your Internet connection goes down, the camera continues to record to the USB device.
The Arlo app notifies you if the USB device is low on storage space or is full. If you select automatic overwrite, the oldest recordings are automatically deleted when available storage on the USB device is below 20%. Unrelated files that are not in the Arlo folder are not deleted by automatic overwrite.
- An Arlo Pro base station
- A USB flash drive or external hard drive with at least 100-200 MB of available space. If you are using best quality video settings, one hour of recordings is approximately 180 MB. If you have several Arlo cameras, have cameras in high-traffic areas, or have your cameras set to record long video segments, you might need more storage space.
Note: Network-attached storage (NAS) devices and drives with multiple partitions are not currently supported.
Do not use the Arlo Pro base station to format storage devices with more than 2 TB of storage capacity. The base station formats storage devices using the FAT32 file system, which supports a maximum of 2 TB of storage space. The formatting process reduces the capacity of larger storage devices to a maxiumum of 2 TB.
To set up local backup storage on an Arlo Pro base station:
- Plug the USB device into one of the two USB ports on the back of the Arlo Pro base station.
- Launch the Arlo app or log in to your Arlo account at arlo.netgear.com.
- Tap or click Settings > My Devices.
- Tap or click the Arlo Pro base station into which you inserted the USB device.
- Tap or click Local Storage.
- If you see a green circle next to USB Device 1 and the status message Ready, skip to step 8.
Note: If you already named your USB Device using a computer, the name displays instead of USB Device 1. If you insert a second unnamed USB device, it displays as USB Device 2.
If you see the message “Requires Formatting” next to USB Device 1 or USB Device 2, the USB device is not in the correct format (FAT32). You must format the USB device before you can use it for local storage.
Formatting the USB device erases all data from the device. If you want to keep any files that are on the USB device, copy those files to another location before you format the USB device. Do not use the Arlo Pro base station to format storage devices with more than 2 TB of storage capacity. The formatting process reduces the capacity of larger storage devices to a maxiumum of 2 TB.
- To delete all files on your USB device and format it for local video storage:
- Tap or click > next to the USB device that you want to format.
- Tap or click Format USB Device.
- Wait for USB Device Status to change from Formatting to Ready.
Warning: Do not remove the USB device while it is formatting. The USB device might become permanently unusable.
- If you do not want old videos to be deleted when your USB device is low on storage space, tap or click the slider next to Automatic Overwrite to turn it off.
If automatic overwrite is turned off, the Arlo app notifies you when storage gets low so that you can enable local storage backup on a different USB device. If storage is completely full and automatic overwrite is turned off, videos are only recorded to the cloud until you turn on automatic overwrite or enable a different USB device.

Netgear’s Arlo camera system automatically records video whenever motion is detected, and you can view those video recordings in the Arlo app. But you can also download recordings directly to your phone so that you can share or view it however you’d like.
Netgear keeps Arlo camera recordings for up to seven days if you don’t pay for a subscription plan, which is usually more than enough time to watch them before they disappear. However, if you need to keep a recording for longer than that, you don’t necessarily need to pay for the upgraded plan—just download the video in question.
Open up the Arlo app on your phone and tap on the “Library” tab at the bottom.
Select a date toward the top to find a specific recording. Dates with green dots underneath them indicate days that motion-detected video was recorded (plus, you can’t select dates that don’t have green dots anyway).
Once you find the video that you want to download and save, there are two different methods for downloading. The first option is to open up the video (which will auto-play) and then tap on “Download” at the bottom.
If you haven’t given the app permission to access your phone’s photo gallery, this is where it will ask you permission so that it can save the recording to your phone.
The second method for downloading a recording is by going back to the main Library screen and tapping on the ellipses next to the video that you want to save.
From there, select “Download”.
As with the first method, the video will take a few moments to download (depending on the size of the video) and will be saved to your phone’s photo gallery, from which you can do whatever you want with it at that point.

If you have Netgear’s Arlo Pro camera system, the fully wireless capabilities are no doubt treating you well. However, there might be some other features that you’re missing out on.
The Arlo Pro system does require a central hub that plugs into your router, but besides that, all cameras that you have set up can be completely wireless, since they run on battery power and use Wi-Fi for data transmission. But here are some other features that you might want to know about.
Mount & Position Cameras Quickly and Easily
It can be a bit difficult position a camera perfectly without seeing the live view, especially when there’s a bit of a lag. However, Arlo Pro comes with a “Position Mode” that helps in these cases.
Just head to Settings > My Devices and select the camera. Then tap on “Position Mode”. You’ll get a no-frills live view of the camera that’s a bit more responsive and less laggy, which helps you position a camera in no time.
Share Access with Other Household Members
You’re probably not the only one in your house who would benefit from receiving alerts and seeing the live view of your Arlo cameras. The good news is that you can share access with other people.
Just open up the settings in the Arlo app and tap on “Grant Access”. From there, you can invite other household members to get the Arlo app and access your home’s camera feeds.
Improve the Battery Life
You can leave your Arlo cameras plugged in so that you never have to recharge them, but if you have them running off of battery power, it may be beneficial to make a charge last as long as possible.
There are several things you can do, like decrease the video quality, keeping the camera out of cold environments, making sure you have a strong Wi-Fi connection, and more. Check out our guide for the complete rundown.
Download Recordings to Your Phone
If there’s a specific recording that you want to save, the Arlo Pro system lets you do just that. It’s a great feature to use, since video recordings won’t be stored in the cloud forever.
Just open up the Arlo app and tap on “Library” at the bottom. From there, select the recording and hit “Download” at the bottom. The video will then save to your phone’s camera roll.
Save Recordings Locally as a Backup
If you’d rather just have all of your recordings saved locally to a flash drive or a hard drive, you can make that happen as well. Recordings will still be saved to the cloud, so think of this as a backup method of sorts.
Your Arlo Pro system will need to format the drive first, but after that you can navigate to Settings > My Devices > select the base station > Local Storage and then toggle on “USB Device Recording”.
Create Custom Recording Modes
By default, there’s no recording mode that lets your Arlo cameras record motion but not send you an alert, which is where creating your own custom recording modes comes in handy.
To do this, tap on “Modes” at the bottom on the main screen, select your base station, and then tap on “Add a Mode”. Customize it how you want it and you’re off to the races.
Rename Cameras
When you first set up an Arlo Pro camera, they’re named by their serial numbers, which isn’t really all that helpful. Luckily, you can rename cameras to whatever you want.
Just navigate to Settings > My Devices and then tap on the camera you want to rename. From there, tap “Name” and enter in whatever name you want to give it.
Disable the Camera’s Microphone
You probably don’t need the microphone enabled on some of your Arlo cameras, but thankfully you can disable the microphone if you want to and possibly squeeze out a bit more battery life.
Go to Settings > My Devices and tap on the camera you want to disable the microphone on. From there, select “Audio Settings” and toggle the microphone off. From that same screen you can also disable the camera’s speaker.

The Arlo Pro camera not only records video when it detects motion, but it can also capture audio as well. However, if that’s not a feature that you’ll really take advantage of, here’s how to disable the microphone to save just a tad bit of battery life.
Open up the Arlo app and tap on the “Settings” tab in the bottom-right corner.
Tap on “My Devices” at the top.
Select your camera from the list if you have more than one. Otherwise, just tap on the one camera.
Tap on “Audio Settings”.
Next to “Microphone”, tap on the toggle switch to turn it off if it isn’t already.
From this same screen, you can also disable the camera’s speaker, as well as change the volume of the speaker.
Keep in mind that disabling either or both will prevent you from having two-way chat abilities. And obviously, turning off the microphone will result in no audio being captured whenever video is recorded. Sometimes it’s not needed, but if you have your camera set up in a place where capturing the audio might be just as useful as video, it doesn’t hurt to keep the microphone on.
CCTV is a technology that is developing rapidly and is compatible with the era that is full of internet very well, started as a wired device turned into wireless. Anytime, anywhere you can watch stream live or previous video as you need – even alert or monitor remotely when there are intruders or visitors at your home via your Android or iOS device. And the obvious change is that the current price compared to the past will be much cheaper.

It’s been two years since I first installed Arlo cameras at my home. These wire-free security cameras were a revolution – I’d always wanted surveillance video but there was no way I was running wires for power and connectivity.
To have a weather proof, 100% wireless camera meant anything was possible. Recording all the motion they detect to the cloud I could watch my cameras live from anywhere, and could download clips remotely – even have them emailed to me.
I’ve seen a lot of couriers come and go, I’ve seen a lot of people walk past my cameras – and now I’ve upgraded two of them to the latest from Netgear, the Arlo Pro.
There’s a heck of a lot different about these new cameras, but what’s most important is they are compatible with existing Arlo systems. You can add a single camera to an existing Arlo system, or you can use the new base station with the Arlo pro and move your existing cameras over.
I’d recommend the latter. In my initial testing I used my original Arlo base station and simply added the Arlo Pro cameras. They worked right out of the box, but I noticed the video would glitch – a small pause in the early third of the video. It happened consistently, so I installed the Arlo Pro base station and things are working fine with all my cameras (2 x Arlo Pro, 3 x Original Arlo, 1 X Arlo Q).
Rechargeable Batteries
In two years, I’ve probably purchased 80 batteries or so for my four Arlo Cameras. At Bunnings, that’s breaking the bank. Fortunately, I found an online bulk buy to make it a bit more palatable. Listening to their owners, Netgear did the obvious, and scrapped the niche 123 batteries and installed their own rechargeable battery in the back of the Arlo Pro.
In time there will be spares you can buy, so you can have charged batteries ready to go, until then, out of the box you can charge with MicroUSB. But don’t do what I did. Don’t throw away the included charger – because those power bricks you have lying around won’t cut it. I found one charger, one that was doing 12.0V at 2.1A as its maximum output. Seems that or there abouts is required. Again – do not dispose of the included charger thinking “that’s fine, I’ve got plenty of those”.
Likewise the cable, your existing cables will struggle to fit into the housing around the MicroUSB socket. I found one – in about 30.
The Camera
With a 130 degree viewing angle, you’re capturing a good area of view in almost any placement. And they’ve upgraded the night vision too – making it better by any measure.
Motion Detection
Perhaps one of my key feedback about Arlo was I felt it was recording a touch too late.
Not so with the Arlo Pro. Short of having some predictive capabilities, you’re going to capture everything you need. The motion detection is loads better, meaning you see people in the side of the screen just after the enter view, instead of half way through.
Just as it was with the original Arlo, you have to take the time to manipulate the settings. Test the motion sensitivity. At 100% you’ll get too many false positives and will drain your batteries faster.
Two way audio
A feature on the Arlo Q wired member of the Arlo family was two-way audio, meaning you could talk back to people who were in front of the camera.
That feature has been added to the Arlo Pro – you talk back via your Arlo app.
Now I can’t really say how well this works, other than to say I never needed it. I have got a lot of gear around my home – including the Ring Doorbell, so I’d say for most who don’t have a video doorbell, the two way audio would be a great way to chat to someone at your front door.
Alarm sounding
The new base station has a couple of handy features. The first is the Siren. Yep, Siren. This puppy will emit a piercing 100 decibel sound – not a good sound, an alert sound. Trigger this on motion at times, or trigger it manually via the app.
Silencing the alarm occurs using the app or a button on top of the Base Station.
USB Recording
Your standard Arlo account gives you 7 days free recording. An annual subscription can lift that to 30 days, but with a USB plugged into your new base station you can extend that right out.
I plugged a 256GB drive in, and set the device to overwrite the oldest recordings when it fills. This means I’m getting almost limitless recordings
One other thing – they are bigger – bulkier than the original Arlos. No real issue there, but just FYI – if you’re popping them onto the included magnetic mounts they won’t quite twist onto the same angle you may be familiar with – but this is compensated by the wide viewing angle so you shouldn’t miss a thing.
Worth it?
Hell yeah. No, they’re not cheap. $349 gets you a single Arlo Pro camera – add this to your existing Arlo setup. But $499 gets you the starter kit with 1 cam and the new base station. 2 Cam Kit is $799, 3 Cam Kit at $1,099 and a 4 Camera kit will set you back $1,399.
If you’ve got an existing Arlo system, start the upgrade camera by camera if you can. If you don’t have any video monitoring at home – now’s the time to get started.

Move over, Arlo Pro 3 … or not
Meet the Arlo Pro 4, Arlo’s new version of its oft-recommended Pro camera. The Pro 4 doesn’t need a base station to work (hooray!), but that’s its only improvement over the Pro 3.
So basically, if you’re ready to ditch the SmartHub, this is for you. If you already have an Arlo base station or you still want to get one for the local storage feature, you can skip the Pro 4 and spend less money to get the Pro 3.
Amazon.com List Prices (as of 06/17/2021 10:00 MST) Full disclaimer
Arlo Pro 4 features
Arlo’s all about features, even in its more basic cameras. And the Pro 4 is no exception.
Arlo Pro 4 features:
- 2K video quality
- 160° field of view
- Color night vision
- Advanced object detection (person, vehicle, package)
- Motion detection
- Customizable motion zones
- Sound detection
- Zoom
- Two-way audio
- Spotlight
- Siren
- Magnetic mount
- Arlo solar panel compatibility
- Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, Apple HomeKit, and IFTTT compatibility
- Local storage with base station/SmartHub (though hub is not required)
- Water-resistant
Interestingly, the only advantage that the Pro 4 offers over the Pro 3 is the lack of hub requirement.
We’d argue that advanced object detection is what makes Arlo Arlo. But you can’t get advanced object detection without a paid storage plan, which is annoying.
Magnetic mount
Righty tighty, lefty loosey, blah blah blah. Forget about screw mounts. The Arlo Pro 4 comes with a strong magnetic base so you can easily detach and reattach it. Since the batteries need charging at least every six months, that’ll definitely come in handy.
But if the thought of a more easily removable camera makes you nervous, you can also purchase a screw base. One reviewer said the Arlo Pro 4 can even be mounted to a standard tripod, which is neat (though we’re not sure how it would come in handy). ¹
Arlo Pro 4 pricing
If you’re looking for the most bargain cameras out there, typically, we wouldn’t recommend Arlo. But because you can buy the Arlo Pro 4 in a one-pack without a hub, its cost aligns more with that of other similar cameras.
However, the storage and full feature costs do jack up the price by a pretty penny.
Storage
If you want to take advantage of the Arlo Pro 4’s hublessness, you’ll need cloud storage. And for cloud storage, you need to pay.
Data as of 06/17/2021.
The Arlo Smart Premier plan isn’t out-of-your-mind expensive, but it can add up—especially since you’ll need to pay even more money if you want your camera to record all the time. ($9.99 for 14 days; $19.99 for 30.)
But, sadly, a paid plan is your only option if you don’t want to go through the hassle of local storage. The local feature requires buying a hub and an SD card or USB drive, then manually downloading the video footage every time you want to look at an event.
Also, even if you used local storage, you’d still have to pay the cloud storage price to access your object detection features. The motion and sound detection come with the camera, but the package, people, and vehicle detection all rely on the storage subscription.
Luckily, the Arlo Pro 4 comes with a three-month trial. And hey, at least you don’t have to pay for the more expensive Arlo Smart Elite plan required for the Arlo Ultra.
Arlo Pro 4 home automation
With Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings compatibility, your Arlo Pro 4 will work with just about any major smart home hub. That’ll make it easy to integrate the camera into most smart homes.
And even if you’re not using Amazon, Google, Apple, or Samsung at your place, you can still connect your camera to smart home device chains using IFTTT.
We typically like to see some Zigbee or Z-Wave compatibility, too, so that the camera can connect directly to other devices. In that regard, Arlo is lacking. But you can still create quite a solid smart home without those closer connections.
Arlo app
The Arlo app is nothing to sneer at. It’s got high ratings on both Google Play and the Apple Store, and it’s pretty intuitive if not innovative. Most users seem to like it just fine.

Arlo has long been my preferred network camera, handily besting the likes of Nest due to a generous free tier of service and unrivaled placement flexibility — weather-proof, battery-powered, and wireless. Well, Netgear has just upped the ante with the Arlo Pro line of cameras. In addition to what sounds like generally improved optics (and now audio) to possibly match the Arlo Q model, the two new features that have me contemplating an upgrade are rechargeable batteries (supposedly good for 6 months) and USB video storage. However, these refinements do come at a cost. Whereas my original Arlo 4-pack ran $500, the equivalent Pro bundle goes for $650. It seems I could add enhanced Pro cameras to my current config, but local storage does require the new hub.

Do the Arlo Pros support PoE? Any experience with 3rd party app support that may be geared toward more specific use-cases such as baby monitoring?
Yeah, the new hub adds local storage and a Siren. Way too many false alarms for me to ever want a Siren, but the local storage would be nice. I literally just bought into Arlo 1 week ago (Great 2 camera/base station Costco deal), but I’m ok with just adding a few pro cameras to my setup and forgoing the siren and local storage, for now. I was going to add 2 more cameras anyway, so now they will be Pros instead of the old ones.
My biggest complaint about the Arlo wireless cameras is how long they take to start recording after a motion is detected. I’m hoping the new Pro camera’s address that with a better motion sensor.
They (Arlo Pros) do NOT support POE because they do not support being wired. The new pros have a mini USB for charging, OR for continuous power, but the data connection is always wireless.
If you want to go with POE, the Arlo Q does support POE.
I have an Arlo mounted above my drive way to watch for vandals trying to get into cars (common in my area). We have a tree partially covering the drive way, and the shadows cast throughout the day and any wind, set up numerous useless recordings/alerts. I did order a Pro standalone to try out. I’m interested in the better motion detection they announced for later this year.
Scary, Byron, I rarely get false positives. I doubt shadows are triggering it and, beyond adjusting the sensitivity, wonder if it’s wind moving branches in Byron’s case — I sometimes see that with my deck grill cover or umbrella on really windy days.
Also, Bryon, have you cropped down the image you capture? If so, the movement may be beyond the edges of that crop. I had a similar experience in my driveway – I cropped out the road, but the motion sensor gets everything in the original frame. Once I tilted the camera down a bit more, the false positives stopped.
Of course, your mileage may vary and we each have different tolerance thresholds — for example the 2 seconds or whatever to start recording on my original outdoor Arlos doesn’t bother me when I see the delivery guy leaving instead of arriving. However, the time lag in spinning up the camera and in the action is annoying when trying to use the Arlo Q as an occasional baby monitor (although the zoom and night vision are far superior to the Samsung Smartcam).
Yeah, it’s likely not the shadows. The wireless Arlos use Infrared heat detection for movement, and not frame analysis.
“Arlo Wire-Free cameras trigger an alert when the infrared technology detects an object that is warmer than the surrounding environment. Arlo’s motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from the camera. The motion sensitivity settings range from one (low sensitivity) to 100 (ultra sensitive).”
The Arlo Pros have a digital infrared motion sensor (the original Arlo has an analog motion sensor). I’ve also heard they have 2 passive infrared sensors (PIR sensor) instead of 1. But I’m unable to confirm that right now.
Mostly we get people roaming around looking for unlocked car doors, to try get some loose change for their next fix 🙁
My image is cropped to avoid the road as much as possible, it’s a short driveway. Occasionally I can tell when a car driving by triggers it, as I’ll see the tail end of the car in the video like this one:
whereas this one just has a flash of light as it starts:
I’m hearing from someone who was briefed by Netgear than 3-months rechargeable battery life may be more typical for many users (rather than the 6 month claim). My real-world experience using non-replaceable batteries has been 3-6 months, dependent on weather (cold), video recording frequency and length. If I were look at Arlo today as a new customer, there’s no question I would go rechargeable – the math probably balances out pretty quickly.
is the battery removable, or do you have to charge while in the camera? Would be cool to have a spare set of batteries that you can easily swap out so you don’t have to stop having the cameras while the batteries charge.
You can buy additional batteries if needed. Netgear is also selling a “charge station” for charging more than one battery at a time.
I put an order in thru Best Buy as they are claiming a 10/19 release date. Been happy with my current Arlo’s, but like the idea of the Pro’s better detection and definitely the local storage.
There was a press release a while ago from Netgear stating that Arlo’s would eventually be able to send to a ReadyNAS, but that never appeared.
You Are Protected
As Malaysia slowly descends into a state of turmoil where people resort to petty theft as a last resort, you can rest easy knowing that the Netgear Arlo Pro 2 is here to protect you. With the choice of having up to six cameras at one go, you can now keep your entire home protected and connected always. Each camera comes with HD quality live streams with integrated automatic night vision lens so you will know what goes on in your backyard when you’re not home.
Nothing Goes Undetected
Each Netgear Arlo Pro 2 camera is equipped with 130-degree wide-angle lens so you will be able to see more, making it that much easier to strategically position each camera in key points of your home. The cameras also come with advanced motion detection through a wide-angle PIR motion sensor, which will ensure no movement in its line of sight goes unnoticed. If it does detect a potential threat, a 100+ decibel siren will sound through the built-in speaker in the cameras (which has caused a ruckus in my household on more than one occasion).
Be in Control Over Everything
Thanks to the easy setup, you can connect the Base Station and all the cameras to your smartphone with the Netgear Arlo app. This way, you can keep tabs on each camera’s line of sight, which will record motion or sound-triggered events and is then saved on the cloud storage space. You will also receive instant mobile alerts in case the cameras detect any movements.
1 – Easy Setup
The Netgear Arlo Pro 2 was easy to set up as it required no cables aside from a LAN cable to be connected to the Base Station.
2 – In Rain Or Shine
The wireless cameras come with an IP65 waterproof rating so you don’t have to worry about the rain short-circuiting the camera.
3 – Easy Recording Storage
You can either choose to save your recordings on a USB drive or through Netgear’s free cloud storage.

Verdict: If you’re looking for wireless security solutions for your home, look no further than the Netgear Arlo Pro 2 with its state-of-the-art security capabilities.
The Arlo Pro 2 is a versatile camera system that ditches the power cable.
Arlo has discontinued the Arlo Pro 2, but you can still check out the Arlo Essential, Arlo Pro 3, and the Arlo Pro 4.
The Arlo Pro 2 is a pretty sweet little outdoor security camera. It’s wire-free, so you can put it anywhere you want. But it does have a wired option as well if you don’t want to run around recharging batteries. Plus, it offers both cloud and local storage options so you’ll never lose that video of your neighbor’s kids TP-ing your yard.
Arlo has come out with a few newer iterations of this camera, but the Arlo Pro 2 is still an excellent option for yard surveillance.

Since the Arlo Pro 2, Arlo has come out with a few other version of this same style of camera. If you want upgraded features like 4K video resolution, a built-in siren and security light, or color night vision, then you might be more interested in one of the newer Arlos. Just keep in mind, they’ll cost more than the Pro 2.

That same features also makes the Arlo Pro 2 perfect for people who want multi-camera systems around their property. That said, if you prefer to rely on a wire instead, you can do that too. The Arlo Pro 2 comes with a power cord option.

Nest cameras have the unique ability to record videos without drawing attention due to their small size. Outdoor cameras tend to be obvious if not hidden from line of sight. The Arlo Pro brings together both of those concepts to make it one of the best home security cameras you can buy today.

Performance
The Arlo Smart Home Security Cameras didn’t impress us at every corner, so let’s start with the positives. The camera has a very wide field of view; 130-degrees can capture a lot and is almost twice as wide as the AMICCOM Home Security Camera. It also has color night vision, a feature that isn’t available on any of our top picks. As for video quality, it’s 720p—not quite as nice as 1080p, but an improvement over the original Arlo camera, with the Arlo Ultra shooting in 4K.
Unfortunately, its battery life isn’t very impressive. On a good day, it’ll last 6 months; high activity can lessen it to 4 months. Thankfully, it has a rechargeable battery, but you’ll have to charge it frequently.
Design
The Netgear Arlo Pro combines the compact nature of nest cams, like the Ring Indoor Home Security Camera, and outdoor cam to create a nest cam outdoor security system. Its IP65-certified weatherproofing makes sure of that. There’s also no doubting the really high quality materials used to construct the Arlo Pro. The Arlo cameras are rather easy to install and unique, too. Per camera is a magnetic mount you can place in a desired area and then stick to the mount itself. And since they’re wire free, there’s no drilling involved. Making adjustments, like camera settings, is equally simple—especially with the mobile app, the Arlo app.
Value
As far as value goes, the Arlo Pro is simply priced too high compared to other wireless security systems or any camera system for that matter. To be fair, you’re getting an entire camera kit here that includes 3 cameras, a base station, and free cloud storage that rolls over every week, not just one camera or two cameras. The Blink XT2 3 Camera System, on the other hand, is cheaper, just as good and better in many areas, and you get an entire year of free cloud storage (before paying per month). The Blink XT2 is simply better priced in this regard.
Arlo Pro Review Wrap Up
The Arlo Pro aren’t bad by any means, but certainly a tad overpriced with a few features that are behind standards. However, they are wireless and can be placed inside and outside with its IP65 waterproof rating. Built with 720p image quality, night vision, cloud and local storage (with a USB), good motion detection and a very wide 130-degree field. We particularly like its impressive sound detection, which sets off alarms.

Review:
Netgear’s Arlo Pro 2 offers great flexibility as the camera can be used with a battery or plugged into a power source, is suitable for both indoor and outdoor placement, and can be connected to the hub through WiFi or with an ethernet cable. While the camera offers good image quality and a wide viewing angle, the batteries don’t last very long in high motion areas, making it unsuitable for a busy environment.

Reputation:
Neatgear’s Arlo Pro 2 has been rated on Amazon more than 6,000 times and gets 4.2 out of 5 stars. The camera is described as incredibly easy to install and captures good image quality. Some users reported connection issues and expressed strong disappointment with the customer service.

David Strom’s musings on technology
This article is the latest installment in my smart home series . A natural addition to any smart home would be to use security cameras to monitor your entry points. I tested the latest Netgear Arlo cameras, including the Arlo Pro and the Arlo Go. Overall, my review is mixed.
Netgear has had its Arlo line for several years. What is new with these two units is the rechargeable batteries, so you don’t spend a small fortune on replacing the ones in the cameras. The design goal with Arlo is that you can run them completely cable-free, so you can place them optimally without regard to wiring. By that they mean that you don’t have to run any wires to them, either for power or network connectivity.
But there are two different battery sizes for the Pro and the Go models. Go includes a slightly larger unit that comes with its own stand. Pro has a smaller magnetic attachment device to be mounted on the wall.Either Pro or Go batteries can be recharged outside the camera with an optional $60 charging dock, which is included in some of the multiple-camera kits.
The older Arlo models used ordinary batteries that drained quickly. These newer models use rechargeable ones that last a couple of weeks, depending on usage, and connect via Wi-Fi networks (in the case of the Pro) or Go has its own AT&T SIM card. That means the Go can be placed anywhere that has a cell signal, and if you don’t have any indoor Wifi. You can see the signal strength on its web portal page. This is great for a remote cabin the woods, as long as it isn’t too far afield from a cell tower.
A9221476/A9221476.jpg” />Both of the newer cameras can record ambient audio and can see a 130 degree video view in HD quality, along with night vision rather at 850 nm that can see things up to 25 feet away. You can also control a 8x zoom lens in real time. The original Arlo cameras has a 110 degree view and no audio capabilities.
Camera setup is very simple. You connect the controller to your wired network, download the smartphone app, and press the button on the controller and then on each camera for it to be recognized by the system. You need to create a login ID with the web service. One ID per system only. Once you have setup the cameras with this login, you can use the smartphone app outside of your home network.
You can only be logged in at one location: either via the smartphone app or the web portal. This is a security feature. The web and smartphone app controls are almost the same, with the exception of geo-fencing mode that is available on the phone app only.
The cameras have four different detection modes: armed, schedule, geo, and disarmed. The schedule mode allows you to turn off the detection during the weekend or when motion sensing would kick off too many alerts. You can also set up your own custom rules for all the cameras connected to your hub or for particular Go cameras.
You can set various thresholds — for motion (the claim is 23 feet from the camera) or sound detection. Then the cameras record the next ten seconds. When you purchase the camera, you get a free week’s worth of video storage in the cloud, after that you have to purchase a storage plan if you want to keep the videos for any length of time. (You can access your video library easily at any time, shown here.) You can download these videos as MP4s, and also share them with Netgear. If you use the Pro models, they attach to a local controller, which has two USB slots where you can fit a USB thumb drive for local storage. The Go units have a microSD slot where you can store your video recordings.
The biggest new feature of the Pro/Go cameras is audio, and it is two-way so you can get an alert via email and then talk remotely to someone who has stopped by your lake house and knocked on your door when you aren’t home as an example. You can also set off a very loud alarm remotely if you see something amiss.
The Arlo setup comes with a free basic subscription plan. This covers up to five cameras and up to seven days of 1 GB of cloud storage for your recordings. There are a variety of paid consumer and business plans that up the level and duration of storage and the number of cameras per account, these start at $100/year per account. The cameras retail for $950 in a kit that includes six Pro cameras, several wall mount options, power chargers and a base station. A single camera system is $250. The Go camera on the Verizon cellular network retails for $350, plus $85 a month, provided you sign a two-year contract.
If you have an older Arlo setup, it probably isn’t worth it to upgrade to Pro or Go collection. If you are looking for a smart home webcam, you can certainly find cheaper models that will require some wiring, or use ordinary batteries. It might be worthwhile to have a single Arlo Pro or a Go in the case of the remote cabin without any Internet connection. If you don’t mind replacing batteries and don’t need the two-way audio, you should stick with the older Arlo models.

Share All sharing options for: Netgear’s Arlo is a weatherproof HD camera for keeping tabs on your home
Two years ago Netgear bought Avaak, a small company that made tiny wireless security cameras called the Vue. It turned that into the VueZone, an entire system that it sold along with a monthly subscription service for things like storage and notifications. Today the company is announcing Arlo, an updated version of that system with better quality video, and a tougher build so that you can stick the cameras outside.
The $349.99 Arlo kit Netgear’s announcing today includes two cameras, with each rated for 4 to 6 months of battery life using a set of replaceable batteries. Netgear’s given each one a 120 degree lens, infrared night vision, and 720p video recording, all of which are much improved from previous VueZone models. Videos it captures are sent to Netgear’s servers, where users get 200MB of free storage. The company says that equates to about 400 clips, and between 2 to 3 weeks of footage for most people, and people can upgrade with a paid monthly plan. Just like previous models, people can get alerts when there’s motion, and go through logged footage in the browser, on phones, and tablets.
You still need a base station, but it might get more useful
The entire system still requires a base station, something the company says is necessary to use ultra low power WiFi, and to work with as wide a range of routers as possible (including ones from competitors). Connecting directly to a router directly would also drain the batteries in two days, the company says. Beyond that, Netgear is angling the base station as a hub for future expansions. That includes hooking up with other smart home devices, and connecting things like Zigbee and Z-Wave antennas to two USB ports located on the back. Netgear didn’t announce any partner products that might work with that today, but hinted at future products it’s making that could tap into the new system. It also said that it’s now part of the AllSeen Alliance, a group of companies working on interoperability between Internet of Things devices.
Arlo continues to exist in an unusual part of the home monitoring camera market. Many cameras, though especially those that record high definition footage like Dropcam, need to be plugged into a power outlet. Existing VueZone systems also required the tiny cameras to connect to the aforementioned base station that needed to be hooked up to a router. One of Netgear’s most recent competitors, Homeboy, essentially offered the same thing, but in a design that connected right to the router over WiFi. The big difference here, and one Netgear hopes will get people to bite, is the fact that you can use the small cameras both indoors and outdoors.
The new system goes on sale in January and replaces the VueZone line, which Netgear says it’s no longer producing but will continue to support. Just like those products, the company is selling standalone add-on cameras for $169 apiece, and plans to offer a way its own routers, sans base station with a firmware update.
In almost all the Arlo security camera reviews out there, you’ll come to notice all the various models have one word in common- wireless. The US brand is one of the providers that have successfully embraced Wire-free technology into their security solutions. So, you won’t have to worry about where to put your cameras.
For the record, a wire-free security camera is a type of CCTV that functions with batteries and wireless transmission. Just as the name, no wires are connecting the system, which means it won’t dictate where to be mounted.
In any case, this post is all about Arlo security camera systems. However, we’ll mostly focus on the battery-powered series as they’re much flexible and perfect to use both indoors and outdoors.
Here’s a Quick Summary of The Great Five and How They Compare to Each Other.
About Arlo Security Cameras
Despite the latest solid grounds, Arlo Technologies Company didn’t begin on its own. Its story started as a line of product of Netgear, a California-based multinational computer networking company.
At the time, it was in 2014 when the first Arlo security camera system appeared in the market. The engineers incorporated their long-establish craftsmanship on routers on the camera, marking it the first of many products under the new home automation brand.
While it was supposedly a try-out with only 720p recording capability, Arlo recorded a stunning performance throughout 2015. In the year that followed, 2016, Netgear introduced an updated version of the camera, Arlo Pro, that has a sturdier weatherproof design.
The camera, however, also delivered 720p HD video quality, but many homeowners still favored it for the wire-free setup and free cloud storage. It even became a flagship for the maker, albeit not for long as the Arlo Pro 2 came with a better 1080p Full HD resolution.
After about three successful years under Netgear, Arlo finally decided to break loose and manage its own video surveillance department. This was back in 2018, and to say better, it released the Arlo Ultra camera with a 4K resolution to make the start of the newly-formed company.
At this point, Arlo Technologies has about ten different series of security cameras, including Arlo Baby to monitor your kids. The company has also added video doorbells in its catalog. So, you can now enjoy what traditional doorbell don’t have- watching your front yard and answering the door from anywhere.
Are Arlo Security Cameras Really Worth It?
For sure, this a Yes or No answer kind of a question. If you need a solution for your home security, the company is definitely worthwhile.
Some of the advantages with Arlo over other cameras brands and designs include:
High-Definition Video Quality: it offers camera resolutions ranging from 1080p Full HD to 4K ultra HD. Thus, producing clear, crisp video footage for easier tracking of the background activity.
Advanced Smart A. I. integration: some cameras have features like package detection, and or auto track for easier and safer monitoring
Smart Home Integration: all cameras are compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings devices. Thus, allowing you to build your smart home ecosystem, whereby you can even control various functions via voice commands.
Simple Installation: the cameras function with less or no wires. Hence, quick and effortless to set up around your home without any drilling
Flexibility: The cameras can be placed anywhere, regardless if there’s electricity or not. Most of them are also weatherproof, which gives you the option to install either indoor or outdoor in the harsh weather.
Remote Access: Thanks to the WiFi connection, you can stream your camera from anywhere, anytime using your internet-enabled device.
Free Cloud: Select cameras offer up to 7-day cloud recordings at no fee. Hence, making it possible to playback video history from any location in the world.
Motion and Sound Detection: Arlo is amongst the few whose systems can send you intrusion alerts based on movements or noise.
Active Deterrence: Various devices have a smart siren and a built-in spotlight. Hence, stopping opportunistic criminals before they could break-in.
Audio Features: All Arlo cameras have a built-in mic and speaker to record videos with the audio or establish a two-way conversation.
These are some of the key beauties of adding Arlo to your property. However, there are several others found on individual devices as shown in the following Arlo Security camera reviews.

Selecteer bovenaan “Mijn apparaten”.
Selecteer uw Arlo Pro-basisstation.
