If you struggle with quick note-taking, recording your Skype call is an excellent alternative to jotting down notes with a pen and paper. Recording the call makes it simple to play it back later, allowing you to pause and write down key points or re-watch the most vital parts. You can quickly record and save personal and professional Skype calls for later viewing directly from your computer.
We’ll be assuming you’ve already installed the latest version of Skype for our guide or at least the last version of the classic desktop client. If not, head to the Skype website and download it before we get started. Please note that recording audio and video conversations without asking the other party for permission is legally questionable and differs based on where you live. Check the laws in your local area or ask for permission before recording.
Skype’s built-in recording
Skype has its built-in recording function, and though others may be more full-featured, it comes pre-bundled with the application, making it the easiest to gain familiarity.
Note that Skype is available on smart displays and smart speakers like Amazon Echo/Alexa — and you can even get more free minutes for using Skype on these devices. However, these smart devices do not allow you to record your Skype conversations at this time. If you want to record the audio or video, you will need to have it on a computer.
Here’s how to use it:
Step 1: Start a call with your friend or colleague. It can be voice or video. You can simply choose someone from your contact list with the right syncing options. The option works whether you’re using personal Skype or Skype for Business.
Step 2: Click the “+” icon in the bottom right-hand corner and select Start recording. A red dot and message will appear at the top of the window, reminding you that the call is being recorded. Doing so also creates a banner notification that everyone in the call will see, letting each person know that they are being recorded. All Skype screens/audio streams will be captured, no matter how many people are on the call.
Step 3: When you’ve finished recording the call, either hang up or press the “+” icon again and select Stop recording. The recording will then be finalized and processed.
Step 4: To listen back to the recording, go to your chat window using the icon in the bottom-right of the call window. The recording will be there. Press play on it to listen/watch it back.
Note that Skype’s in-app recording function records all participants’ video and audio in the same file, only records Skype-to-Skype calls, and only saves files for 30 days. If you want separate recordings, you may be better off using one of the following alternatives.
Although it only records the audio portion of a call, MP3 Skype Recorder is the most lightweight and hands-off of the Skype recording solutions we recommend. It’s entirely free, with only the most niche features hidden behind the Pro version paywall.
Another option is Evaer, which is a straightforward program that’ll get the job done in a pinch. With the free trial, you can record video conversations of up to five minutes in length. If you want to record longer videos than that, however, you’ll need to pay for the premium version ($20).
The recording should appear in the Evaer window, under the name of the Skype user with whom you were chatting. Right-click the conversation and select Open from the drop-down menu to view the file in its destination folder. From there, you can play it, rename it, or upload it.
ECamm Call Recorder ($40)
If you want to record Skype calls on a Mac without using Skype’s built-in methods, ECamm’s Skype Call Recorder is the obvious first choice. It’s not free, but there’s a seven-day trial if you want to try the software before shelling out $40.
Step 1: Head to the Skype Call Recorder homepage and download the trial version. You can buy the full version later if you want, but for now, let’s just get the software up and running.
Step 2: The trial comes in a ZIP file, which you merely need to double-click to open (or use one of these programs). You’ll find the installer inside. Run it, and you’ll go through the motions to install Call Recorder. Enter your password if prompted.
Step 3: Launch Skype as you usually would. Everything will look the same, except there will now be a new window that opens alongside the main Skype window. Simply click the red button in the new window to start recording your conversation.
You’ll see audio levels for both your microphone and the other people in the conversation, which lets you know if the recording is indeed working. If you want to fine-tune how everything works — i.e., the resolution, format, and recording type — a preference pane in Skype’s settings will allow you to do so.
Step 4: If you weren’t already aware, you automatically installed a tool called ECamm Movie Tools alongside Call Recorder. Launch the program — you can also open it via the magnifying glass in the ECamm window — and you can edit your recordings.
Step 5: From there, you can adjust the volume for either side of the conversation and decide whether to show one or both videos — you can also export to the file format of your choosing. There’s even a share button for uploading directly to YouTube or Vimeo or exporting to iMovie. As you can see in the image above, however, the trial version includes a prominent watermark.
That’s it! Do with the resulting file what you will. Keep in mind, however, that if one of you is using a slower computer, the video might record at an extremely meager frame rate or resolution (even if you’ve customized the settings).

How To Record Skype Video Calls
In this article, you can know about how to record skype video calls here are the details below;
There are 2 different options that you can utilize to record video calls from Skype, and it is relevant to you to choose which you prefer:
Usage of Skype’s Call Recording Feature
The reasonably recent Skype variation 8 consisted of various enhancements and brand-new functions, one of which was a call recording function.
It will do exactly whats it says and provides you with a way to tape your video calls directly within the Skype application. The single requirements are that you have update your Skype just recently, so you are working on version 8 or greater, and that you tape just Skype-to-Skype calls.
You can utilize the call recording function by following a few simple steps:
1. Start the video call with somebody from your Contact List and include individuals if required.
2. Click the “+” icon in the Skype call to reveal more options.
3. Click “Start Recording” to begin taping the video call.
4. Open chat to see the tape-recorded video call once it is complete. It will be offered there for one month.
5. To conserve the call ultimately, click “More Options” in the chat window.
6. Then, selectSave to downloads to save the taped video employ your downloads folder or “Save as” if you wish to specify a various folder to save it in.
All the Skype calls you conserve using this technique will be kept as MP4 video files on your hard disk.
It is fairly easy and practical to tape-record video calls utilizing the call recording feature. Nevertheless, some people still prefer utilizing another alternative to tape-record Skype calls:
Use Screen Recording Software
Instead of utilizing the integrated call recording feature in Skype, you can utilize independent screen recording software to tape Skype calls. While the exact steps you require to perform will depend on the software that you utilize, all that need to be done is to set it approximately tape-record the part of your screen where the video call is occurring along with the inbound and outbound audio.
Although that sounds more difficult than using the integrated scree recording function, users frequently prefer more control over the audio recording.
Using a screen recording software app, you may have choices offered to adjust the frame rate, save the audio and video in different files, stop or stop the recording briefly separately of the video call, and so on. Some software applications may have additional editing functions available as well. For instance, they might have a trim feature that allows you to get rid of any part of the video footage you don’t need.
For an example of how to tape Skype calls using a screen recording software application, you may want to look at Movavi Screen Recorder.
Which To Use?
At the end of the day, if you are wondering which choice you must utilize, it does not injure you to attempt both out at first. That will let you see how each choice works and assist you in identifying whether or not you have a choice.
As a basic guideline, however, the call recording function is the easier choice– but a screen recorder will provide you with extra functions that aren’t developed into Skype itself.

Skype, as a popular communicating tool, helps us a lot in contacting others. With it, we can easily have a voice or video conversation with single or multiple individuals for online conferences, lectures or interviews, or just ordinary chatting.
When having a very important voice/video call on Skype, you can record the audio from it for later review. To record a Skype call audio is not difficult at all, you just need an audio recorder to do that.
On this page, you can find 2 very useful audio recorders, one is Audacity and the other is an Audacity alternative, Aiseesoft Screen Recorder. From the following content, you will find out the exact steps of using these to record your Skype calls.
Skype calls recording:
Part 1: How to use Audacity to record Skype Calls
As an open-source program, you can download Audacity free from the official website. But before we start, it’s necessary for you to know the Audacity’s biggest defect in recording Skype calls.
Audacity record Skype calls:
Audacity is programmed with a single line-in recording capacity, which means you can only use Audacity to record your own voice through a microphone device or other participants’ voice playing through your speaker. You cannot record both sounds together.
Unless you’re the meeting scribe or a student who is recording your teacher’s speech, you’d better try Aiseesoft Screen Recorder to record the whole Skype call.
Now let’s see the steps of Audacity recording a Skype call audio.
Step 1 Set up for audio recording
You need to set up an audio source in Audacity to enable it to capture the sound from a voice call.
On the interface, change the Audio Host to Windows WASAPI. Then, choose a recording device.
- If you are about to record your own voice, choose a microphone device.
- Or you can choose a speaker or the Stereo Mix device if you want to capture the sound from the other side of the call.
Step 2 Start recording a Skype call
Finishing choosing the audio device, minimize Audacity.
Then, open your Skype. Attend a meeting or you can host one. Wait for all the attendees to get in and when everyone is in, you can start your recording.
Press R on your keyboard or click Record on the Audacity window to start the Skype audio recording.
When the conversation is done, click Stop to finish the recording. Click Play to preview the audio file you just capture.
Step 3 Save the recording
Go to File > Export, you’ll be given a list of choices, you can export the audio file as MP3, MAV, OGG, or other formats.
After you choose the format of the file, Audacity will prompt you to choose the folder to save the file.
This is how you can use Audacity to capture your Skype calls .
Part 2: Audacity Alternative – A better way to record your Skype calls
Since Audacity is only capable of single-line-in recording, it’s not helpful while you want to record all sounds in a Skype call. Here, you can use Aiseesoft Screen Recorder to do that.
About Aiseesoft Screen Recorder
As one of the best screen and audio recorders on the market, Aiseesoft Screen Recorder is programmed with the very easy-to-use operation and wonderful performances in video/audio recording.
Other considerate features of Aiseesoft Screen Recorder:
- It has a dual ability of recording microphone sound and system sound.
- Besides audio/video recording, the program also supports webcam recording.
- It remains active in the background, you can activate an audio/video recording with a keyboard shortcut when you’re having a call.
- You can trim and edit the output with the in-app tools.
These are what the program can give you, now, let’s try to use it to record a Skype call.
Step 1 Launch the program
Launch Aiseesoft Screen Recorder on your computer and choose Audio Recorder on the interface.
Then, turn on both Microphone and System Sound to record the whole conversation.
Minimize the program’s window after turning on the 2 options.
Step 2 Start recording
Open your Skype and call your friends or colleagues. When the conversation begins, press Ctrl + Alt + S to start recording the Skype call.
Then, the app will work to capture all the sounds from your Skype calls, you can see the length of the audio file from a floating panel.
In this way, you can record the whole Skype call and all the participants won’t know it.
Step 3 Save the audio file
When it’s complete, use the same shortcut to stop the recording.
Screen Recorder will open a window for you to preview the audio file, you can trim it if you want to. Click Save, the file will be stored on a custom destination.
How do I record a Skype video call?
To record a Skype video conversation, Aiseesoft Screen Recorder can be the optimal choice.
On its main interface, choose Video Recorder, then, decide the audio source and you can turn on the Webcam option if you want to.
Click REC or press Ctrl + Alt + S to start recording a video conversation. To find out the detailed steps, you can read the page below:
How to fix Audacity not recording mic/computer sound？
There’re multiple reasons for your Audacity not recording sound issue. To find out the detailed fix, you can check here: Easy Fix: Audacity Is Not Recording Micphone/Computer Audio.
All in all, use Audacity to record a Skype call is not a good idea since it has an obvious limitation of single audio-in recording. So, you’d better try an alternative like Aiseesoft Screen Recorder to record a Skype conversation.
There are lots of instant messengers and voice-over IP software available to use today and Skype is one of the most popular with more than 300 million monthly active users. While Skype comes with features you’ll normally find in a standard instant messaging app such as text chat, file transfer and screen sharing, it is primarily a VoIP service that is more focused towards video and voice calls. Skype to Skype calls are free while calling mobile or landline numbers are charged at affordable rates.
Skype is an excellent VoIP software that can make clear and crisp video or voice calls, but it lacks of an important feature which is the ability to record calls. This is a disadvantage to professionals who want to use the free Skype to Skype calls for conducting video/audio interviews, meetings, conferences, one to one online training, and even consultation.
Actually the call recording feature is available in Skype for Business which is a part of Office 365. Business plans require paid subscriptions per user with annual commitment. If this business plan isn’t suitable for your needs and you just want Skype for free with recording capabilities, here are 3 third party applications for Windows that can record Skype video and voice calls for free without limits.
ShowMore is actually an online screen capture recorder app created and offered for free by Apowersoft Ltd which can be used to record anything that is displayed on your computer screen. By further configuring ShowMore audio input as system sound and microphone, you get to capture both video and audio at the same time giving you the complete recording of Skype video and voice call.
To record Skype video calls with ShowMore, you’ll have to visit ShowMore’s website and click on the Start Recording button.
If it is your first time running ShowMore, you’ll be prompted to go through a one time download and installation of the online launcher program. Once finished installing the launcher, the ShowMore recorder application will launch and you’ll notice that the background is all grayed out except the rectangle box. The control toolbar located at the bottom of the recorder screen allows you to start/stop recording, selecting the video and audio source, fullscreen or custom recording dimension and access to program settings.
It is important that you click on the microphone icon on the toolbar and select “System sound and microphone” otherwise the recorder won’t be able to capture any sound from the Skype call.
In the settings, you get to change the keyboard shortcuts to stop/pause/resume recording, show/hide recording toolbar, changing the output directory, include/exclude cursor in capture, choosing from 8 different types of video format (MP4/WMV/AVI/MOV/FLV/MPEG/VOB/ASF), changing video settings and even mouse styles.
Once ShowMore recorder application is launched, you can call your friends or families using Skype and then start the recording.
ShowMore is not a fully automated Skype recording tool that detects a Skype call and automatically records it. Each time you want to record a Skype call, you’ll need to manually launch the tool from ShowMore’s website and start the recording. There may be slight video quality loss due to screen recording and not directly capturing the raw video data from Skype. It is, however, free and can record Skype video and voice call without limits.
Callnote is a powerful video and audio call recorder that comes in two versions which is the Premium (free) and Pro (paid). Not only can Callnote record Skype video and audio calls, but also support recording calls from other programs such as Google+ Hangouts, GoToMeeting, WebEx, Facebook and Viber. You can also find sharing options in the program to automatically send the recording to Evernote, Dropbox, YouTube, Facebook, Gmail and OneDrive.
Interestingly, Callnote works out of the box after installation and doesn’t need to request access to Skype that requires the user to click on the “Allow access” button. When Callnote is running in the background, it can auto detect if a call is being made by Skype and immediately starts recording. A small control window appears when Callnote is recording where you can pause/stop the recording and take a snapshot.
While you can use Callnote Premium to record a Skype video or audio call as long as you want, you are however limited to only 30 recordings per month. Unlike most of the other Skype call recording shareware tools like Evaer, SuperTintin or Pamela for Skype, they can be used as many times as you want but each recording is limited to only 5 minutes. If you’d like to record more than the 30 times per month, you can always register a new account and login to Callnote with the new email address to get another 30 recordings.
3. Free Video Call Recorder for Skype
This program is created and offered for free by DVDVideoSoft to record Skype video calls without any limitations. Do take note that this program will only start the recording when the other party has turned on the video. So if you’re on a Skype voice call, you will have to manually change the recording mode from the main graphical user interface to “Record audio only”.
What we really don’t like about this program is the official webpage claims that the program contains no spyware or adware whatsoever. If you run the installer, you’ll notice that it will attempt to install two unnecessary “additional software” applications which can only be bypassed by clicking the “Click here” links and unticking all checkboxes. Obviously the development of this “freeware” is funded by adware.
If you must try this application, we’ve managed to obtain the direct download link to the program so you can avoid running the installer that is wrapped with bundle pushing adware.
Final notes: There are 6 other Skype call recorders which we’ve also tested but did not include to the list because iFree Skype Recorder, CallGraph Skype Recorder, Amolto Call Recorder for skype and MP3 Skype Recorder can only record audio calls but not video calls. As for Messenger Plus for Skype! and Skype Auto Recorder, both of this program doesn’t work at all with the latest Skype.
I have been looking to find a way to record my Skype video calls. I do most of my interviews using Skype because my AT&T reception is very bad, I have to sit in my balcony in the northwest corner. I often lean over the balcony to get better reception. After almost dropping my phone and also myself off the balcony I now just make calls by Skype. The calls are recorded using the iPhone recording app carefully positioned closely to my laptop speakers. I still have no idea why Skype doesn’t implement this functionality.
Until that happens it’s time for me to branch out and find a better way to record my VoIP calls. So, how to record skype call? In my search I came up with 5 great Skype call recorder apps.
Pamela [for Windows] is free to download and allows you to record Skype calls. It works on Windows devices and according to the website its certified by Skype. Here is a list of all the features that it has:
- Skype Call Recording
- Skype Video Recording
- Skype Chat Recording
- Skype Call Transfer
- Skype Call Scheduler
- Record calls automatically
- Mono/Stereo recording option
- Skype Conference Call manager
- Create cool mood messages
- Answering Machine
- Play sounds during calls
- Blogging & Podcasting
My main concern with the fluorescent purple app, is that recording times is restricted to 15 mins. Interviews that I do, only start to get interesting after 15 mins in, the free version of Pamela was not going to cut it with me. The premium version allows for unlimited call recording for $25. You download the app and follow the easy to understand installation instructions. Restart Skype and you’re good to record.
MP3 Skype Recorder
I thought to myself there must be a free version out there somewhere and then I discovered MP3 Skype Recorder.
MP3 Skype Recorder [for Windows] is like Pamela and allows you to record calls you make using Skype. It’s features include:
- It’s absolutely free with no limits attached.
- Automatic or manual recording capabilities.
- Compact format of stored records (mp3 files).
- May be used to record P2P, SkypeOutcalls and calls made to Online number.
- Can split the caller and the person called into different tracks, saving it separately
- Easy integration with Skype Conference recording.
- Intuitive easy to use interface.
It is made for Windows users and the software is aimed for professional recordings of Skype conversations. Which is great when you need to keep track of phone conversations, either by legal requirements, or for job security. It works in the background and begins to record conversations automatically at the exact moment they start. However you can also record conversations manually, which is better for me. All the recordings are stored in convenient MP3, OGG, WMA or WAV format. The software integrates seamlessly with Skype and has better design and usability then Pamela. MP3 Skype Recorder hits all my needs for VoIP recording.
WireTap Studio [for Mac] lets you record, edit, and export all audio on your Mac, from a specific app (like Skype or iTunes) or an external microphone. For tasks, like recording an iChat conversation, you can access WireTap Studio’s features directly from its streamlined controller window. The rest of WireTap Studio’s interface is also reassuringly easy to use, with handy tools for editing. It has a nifty feature which allows you to record from two sources at once. However it comes with a price tag of $69.

To choose an audio input device, open the list above the Microphone icon and choose the appropriate device from the list.
Step 3. Capture Your Skype Session
To record a Skype call, click the REC button. You can control the recording process by clicking on the Pause or Stop buttons in the program interface or using the compact control bar on top of the capture frame. You can also use the hotkeys: if you have Windows, press F9 to pause/resume recording and F10 to end the capture process. On a Mac, press ⌥ ⌘ 1 and ⌥ ⌘ 2 respectively. As soon as the recording stops, your video will be automatically saved in MKV format and opened in the preview window.
You can also use the Movavi recording software as an MP3 Skype recorder. If you need to record a Skype audio only, just capture your call as described above and convert the file to MP3 format as described in the next step.
Step 4. Cut and Convert the Recording (Optional)
If you want to cut out unnecessary sections, position the marker at the beginning of the unwanted part of the video and click the Scissors button, then do the same at the end of the unwanted segment. Select the fragment you want to remove and click the Trash Can button.
Click Save As to continue. To choose a format for your recorded video, select one of the formats list. To save your recording as an audio file, choose MP3. Finally, click the Save button. That’s it! Now you know how to record Skype video calls.
PC version of Movavi Screen Recorder is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Mac version is compatible with Mac OS X 10.9 or higher.
