Don’t like how your Facebook Group is doing? You can leave it, but the group will still be there. If you want to hide the Facebook Group from new members, or if you want to delete it, follow our guide.

How to Archive a Facebook Group

When you archive a Facebook Group, you won’t be able to create posts or like or add comments. You won’t be able to add more members, but existing members will be able to view the group. You can restore the group to its former glory at any time.

You can archive a Facebook group from the group’s page from either the Facebook website or the Facebook app on iPhone or Android.

We’ll be using the new Facebook Desktop interface to guide you through the process. (Here’s how to get the new Facebook interface.)

First, open the Facebook website in your browser of choice, and navigate to the Facebook Group you want to archive or delete. Click the “Menu” button from the top toolbar, and select the “Archive” option.

How to Delete a Facebook Group

The process of deleting a Facebook Group is not as transparent, though. You first have to remove all members and then leave the Facebook Group yourself to actually delete it.

Only the group’s creator (who is the same as the admin) can delete the group. If the creator is no longer part of the group, then any admin can delete the group.

On the Facebook website, open the Facebook Group that you want to delete. Click the “Members” button on the top toolbar.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

You’ll now see a list of all the members. Click the “Menu” button next to a member, and choose the “Remove Member” option.

Facebook will ask you if you’re sure you want to leave and delete the group. Click the “Leave Group” button to confirm. Your group will now be deleted.

Then, tap on “Move to trash” to delete it.

Items in your trash will no longer be shown on your Facebook profile.

In addition, they’ll be automatically deleted after 30 days—similar to the “Recently Deleted” album on iOS devices.

However, if you have a lot of old posts, it’s difficult to delete all of them individually.

To speed up the process, you need to delete them in bulk.

In other words, it’s better to delete all of your Facebook posts at once.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to delete all posts, mass delete posts, and bulk delete posts on Facebook.

On the page, you’ll be able to delete all of your posts at once by selecting the “All” checkbox and moving them to the recycle bin.

Then, the posts in the recycle bin will be automatically deleted after 30 days.

This is a great way to mass delete your posts on Facebook.

Alternatively, you can navigate to your activity log using the desktop version of Facebook.

You can leave any Facebook group in just a few clicks.

What to Know

  • Desktop: Open the group page, select the three-dot menu, and select Leave group.
  • Mobile app: Visit the group page, select the three-dot menu, and tap Leave group.
  • The Leave Group menu lets you choose to turn off notifications as an alternative to leaving.

This article walks you through leaving a Facebook group on desktop or mobile. You can do this if you’re receiving too many group notifications or find that you just don’t fit in well with the overall culture of the group.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on Desktop

The desktop instructions work the same from any browser regardless of the operating system you’re using.

Log into your Facebook account and select the Groups icon along the left navigation bar.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

An alternative method to navigate directly to the group page is selecting the group’s name at the top of one of the group notifications in your Facebook news feed. If you do this, then go to step three.

You’ll see all of your groups under Groups You’ve Joined in the navigation section. Select the group that you want to leave.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

If you’re the admin or moderator of a Facebook group, you’ll need to select the group under the Groups You Manage section rather than the Groups You’ve Joined section. The rest of the process described below is the same.

This will take you to the specific group page. On the upper right, select the icon with the three dots. Then, select Leave group from the dropdown menu.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

You’ll see a confirmation window appear. Select Leave Group to finish the process and leave the group permanently.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

You can enable Prevent people from inviting you to join this group again if you want to make sure you won’t hear anything else from the group or any of its members after you’ve left.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on Mobile

The mobile instructions below work for Android or iOS mobile devices, so long as you’re using the official Facebook app.

Sign in to the Facebook app on your mobile device. Select the three-line menu icon at the upper right.

Scroll down this screen and select the Groups block.

You’ll see a page that displays all of your group notifications. At the top, you’ll see a list of your groups as large icons. You can swipe right or left to look through these and select the group you want to exit.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

This will open the group. Select the three-dot icon at the upper right corner of the screen to open the group Tools menu. Select the Leave Group icon.

You’ll see a confirmation message asking if you really want to leave the group. Select Leave Group to complete the process.

If you select More Options, you can Turn Off Notifications rather than leaving the group altogether. This way, you can stop annoying group notifications but still visit the group.

Once you permanently leave the group, you’ll see a confirmation message. You may also have the option to report the group to Facebook if you’ve left the group because of something inappropriate, harmful, or any other reason.

Have you ever been automatically added to a Facebook group unknowingly or without permission? Unfortunately, it happens to all of us thanks to a ridiculous feature on Facebook. You know, the one that lets your friends add you to any group that they own or are a member of.

Even though you can’t stop people from adding you to groups, you can remove yourself from the group. You’ll know that you were added to a group because you’ll get a notification that “so and so” added you. Also you’ll probably start to receive notifications of new posts in the group.

So here’s what you can do to remove yourself.

1. Go to the group that you want to leave. If you’re not sure which one it is, you can see all of your groups by clicking on the “more” link next to Groups in the left column of Facebook.

2. Once you’re in the group, click on the gear icon – under the cover image and to the far right. From the menu, select “Leave Group.”

How to remove a post from a facebook group

3. A confirmation message will appear, asking you if you’re sure that you want to leave the group. You can also choose to prevent other members from adding you back to the group.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

4. If you want to report the group for any reason (harassment, explicit content, spam, scams, hate speech, violence), click on the “Report Group” link at the bottom of the confirmation message. Otherwise, just click the “Leave Group” button.

That’s it. You’ll no longer be a member of that group and you won’t be re-added. Now you can breath a big sigh of relief!

Facebook has had a bad few months. The Cambridge Analytica fiasco is only the latest thing making people re-evaluate how Facebook fits into their lives. You could always totally quit Facebook if you want, but for many that’s not an option. Maybe you need it for work, maybe you need it to participate in groups or message friends, or maybe you just like using it. But what about all those old, embarrassing or sensitive posts? Or what if you want to wipe all your old posts and just start fresh?

If you’ve used Facebook for a while, it would take way too much time to go back and delete every post individually. Personally, I’ve been using Facebook’s “On This Day” feature to check back over old posts and delete those I don’t like. But, if you want a quick way to delete a lot of posts at once, you’ll need to use a browser extension.

This post comes with our standard warning about browser extensions being a privacy nightmare. Yes, it’s ironic that we’re fighting one privacy problem by using another. But it’s pretty much the only way to get this done. And you can always remove the extension when you’re finished using it.

We’re going to use Social Book Post Manager for Google Chrome. We haven’t been able to find a Firefox or Safari extension that works as easily, so even if you’re not a Chrome user, you’re probably best off installing Chrome temporarily just so you can use this extension to tidy up your Facebook account.

Open Chrome and head to the Social Book Post Manager page in the Chrome Web Store. Click the “Add to Chrome” button.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Next, click the “Add Extension” button. You’ll then need to exit and reopen Chrome to finish installing the extension.

Now the extension is ready, head to Facebook. If you want to, you can download a copy of all the data you’ve ever posted to Facebook as a backup. After that (or instead of that if you don’t care about backing up your old posts), click the downward facing arrow in the top right and select the “Activity Log” command.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

The Activity Log shows everything you’ve ever done on Facebook. It’s kind of terrifying to just scroll back through. You can see specific kinds of activity using the filters on the left side, and jump to a certain date using the navigation on the right side.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

If you want to delete everything you’ve done, leave Activity Log selected in the filters. Otherwise, if you just want to delete the things you’ve posted or the posts you’re tagged in, use the relevant filters. The Social Book Post Manager works on whatever posts are included in the filter you have set up.

When you have your filter set up, click the “Social Book Post Manager” icon in Chrome to bring up the extension.

There are a few options here for fine tuning which posts you target.

  • Year: target a specific year or just choose Select All.
  • Month: target a specific month or just choose select All.
  • Text Contains: only target posts containing a certain keyword.
  • Text Not Contains: only target posts without a certain keyword.
  • Prescan On Page: lets you review which posts will be deleted before they’re actually deleted.
  • Speed: how fast Social Book Post Manager works. On a faster computer with a good internet connection, you can use a higher speed.

To demonstrate how this all works, I’m going to target all of my own posts from November 2007. First, I selected the “Posts” filter in Facebook so that the extension will only target my own posts. Then, I opened up the Social Book Post Manager extension, selected 2007 for the year, and November for the month. I’ve left the “Prescan on Page” option enabled so that I can review posts before they are deleted. And I’m not using any keywords.

Set Social Book Post Manager up the way you want, and then click the “Delete” button. Social Book Post Manager will run, scrolling down the page as it does. Sit back and let it do its thing. The more posts you’re targeting, the longer it will take.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

When it’s done scanning, you’ll see the results. If you had the prescan option turned on, it shows a list of matching posts with a little blue tick next to each post it’s targeting for deletion. If you didn’t have the prescan on, your posts will have already been deleted.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

If you did use the prescan on, you can run through and deselect any posts you want to keep. You can also open the “Confirm to Delete” menu and select or deselect all the posts at once. When you’ve reviewed and selected posts, open up that “Confirm to Delete” menu, and then select the “Delete” command.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Once again, Social Book Post Manager will get work to work deleting posts. When it’s done, the posts will be gone.

While deleting your old posts is a good idea, it won’t help you if third party already has your data. Similarly, while Facebook claims in their Terms of Service that anything you delete also gets deleted from their servers, they also state that “the removed content may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time (generally, for a maximum of 90 days…)” and will be held for longer “if required by applicable law, order of any government agency or judicial body, or the like”.

Facebook groups are a great way to organize events, arrange meet-ups and interact with a group of likeminded people.

That doesn’t mean that they can’t be problematic. You might be dealing with abusive members, or you’ve simply run out of steam. After some time, a group may have served its purpose, with comments and messages drying up.

If you’re the creator of a Facebook group, and you’re looking to close it, you can. It’s an easy process to delete a Facebook group on your PC, as well as using the Facebook app on mobile devices. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

Many of us have been using Facebook for years, but there may still be features and settings you’re unaware of.

For example, it’s an easy process to change your name on Facebook to give yourself a fresh start with a new name. You could take things further by creating your own Facebook avatar for your messages. You can also prepare for the worst by adding a Facebook legacy contact to give another user control of your account after you’re gone.

Facebook is in the news again, this time because many people are realizing the social network for what it is: a vast surveillance network that makes the NSA look like amateurs. Recently a #DeleteFacebook trend became popular on Twitter. Deleting your Facebook is the best possible solution, but at the same time it might not be feasible for everyone.

Like it or not we’re all ensnared in Facebook’s claws, and unless you can convince your friends and family to ditch the social network with you, you might find yourself still using it. However, that doesn’t mean you have to give up your personal information to do so. Enter Social Book Post Manager, a Chrome extension that lets you delete Facebook content in bulk.

Delete Facebook Content

First, you can download Social Book Post Manager from the Chrome Web Store. After installing it, you’ll have to navigate to your Activity Log. Don’t worry, because clicking the extension will automatically bring you to the relevant page.

Deleting all of your content will take a while, but if you’re really committed then it’s the only way. In the Activity Log sidebar on the left, click on what you want to delete, like Posts, Comments, or Likes and Reactions. Then click the extension and pick a year , month , and speed .

After exhaustively using this for the past couple of days, here is my advice. It’s better if you pick one year and one month at a time. The script won’t catch everything, and you may end up having to manually remove stuff. Start running the script at 16x speed, then 8x , then 4x , and finally 1x to catch everything.

The instructions say that if it doesn’t work, try removing or disabling your other extensions, then reinstall Social Book Post Manager. Clear the cache in Chrome by clicking on the three vertical dots on the upper right > More Tools > Clear Browsing Data . Click on the Advanced tab, check the box next to each item, and click Clear Data .

After that, it’s also a good time to look at your Facebook privacy settings. You can remove third-party apps from your account or disable Facebook Platform altogether.

How to use Facebook group announcements

As a Facebook Group owner, I’ve often wished there was a way to pin more than one post at the top of the group page. Finally, Facebook has made that possible with their new announcements feature. See this short video to see exactly how it works. (for more info, see this from Facebook: A New Investment in Community Leaders.

As a Facebook group owner, there may be certain posts you want to highlight for your community. The new announcements feature lets you easily add posts to the top of the page in a way that’s not too terribly obtrusive. Up to ten posts can be added to the announcements section, which show up at the top of the group page. However, only one announcement shows up, with a little “See More” link to view the rest of them.

‘Pin to Top’ is still available, and can be used to pin one post as the top announcement.

Group owners can also set specific posts to expire at a set time. This will remove the post from the announcements section, but won’t delete it from the page.

I can see quite a few uses for the new announcement feature.

  • Group rules
  • Special offers
  • Group member recognition
  • Upcoming events
  • FAQs

Although this isn’t a super huge update from Facebook, it’s one I’ve wanted for a long time. So I was pretty happy to see this when I stumbled on it. How about you? If you’re a Facebook group owner, do you think you’ll use this new feature?

Meanwhile, the social network is also, for the first time, now giving users the right to appeal its decisions on individual posts.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Ever wonder how Facebook decides what—and who—to remove from its platform?

Wonder no more because the social network just published the lengthy “Community Standards (Opens in a new window) ” its reviewers use to determine what is and isn’t allowed on Facebook.

The standards are broken down into six categories: Violence and criminal behavior, safety, objectionable content, integrity and authenticity, respecting intellectual property, and content-related requests. They outline how Facebook deals with everything from threats of violence to suicide, self-injury, child porn and sexual exploitation, nudity, bullying, harassment, hate speech, and more.

The move to publish these once internal guidelines comes after The Guardian last year obtained and posted snippets of the company’s exhaustive and sometimes contradictory rules.

Facebook’s VP of Global Policy Management Monika Bickert said (Opens in a new window) the company is now going public with this information to “help people understand where we draw the line on nuanced issues” and as a way to solicit feedback on how it can improve its guidelines. Next month, the company plans to launch a series of public events in the US, UK, Germany, France, India, and Singapore called “Facebook Forums: Community Standards” to get people’s feedback in person.

Facebook relies on artificial intelligence technology and reports from users to identify posts, photos, and other content that may violate its standards. Upon receiving a report, a member of the company’s 24/7 Community Operations team reviews the content in question to determine whether or not it should be taken down. Facebook currently employs more than 7,500 content reviewers.

Bickert acknowledged that Facebook’s reviewers sometimes make the wrong decision.

“In some cases, we make mistakes because our policies are not sufficiently clear to our content reviewers; when that’s the case, we work to fill those gaps,” she wrote. “More often than not, however, we make mistakes because our processes involve people, and people are fallible.”

Meanwhile, Facebook is now, for the first time, giving users the right to appeal its decisions on individual posts. This way, if the company removes your post and you think it made a mistake in doing so, you can ask for a second opinion.

At this point, you will only be able to ask for an appeal for posts removed for nudity/sexual activity, hate speech, or graphic violence. If Facebook removes something you posted for one of those reasons, it will notify you about the action and give you the option to request an additional review. Within 24 hours of initiating an appeal you should know whether Facebook plans to restore your content, or keep it off the platform for good.

Tips for purging Facebook

I like to periodically go through my Facebook account and delete everything that’s older than a couple of years. The reason — I just don’t think it’s necessary to keep a running record of the stupid stuff I say in passing on social media, and it seems like more of a liability than a tool I’ll one day use to reminisce. In performing these purges, I’ve found that Facebook makes it (unnecessarily) complicated to find and delete older data from your profile. So here’s a handy guide on how to delete everything from Facebook.

Delete a comment you made on someone else’s Timeline, status, or photo

Whoops — did you type something in the heat of the moment during an ill-advised Facebook argument on your friend’s Timeline? There are two ways to delete posts you’ve made to other people’s pages: You can find the original post and delete it from the source, or you can delete it from your Activity Log.

From the original post

To delete your comment from the original post, navigate to the original post on your friend’s page and find your comment. If you remember some of the phrasing from the original post (or from your comment), you can search for it in Facebook’s search bar. Once you find your comment, hover over it until you see a small pencil icon appear. Click the pencil icon and click Delete. to delete the comment.

From the Activity Log

If you don’t want to wade through your friend’s Timeline to find the post, you can also search your Activity Log. To open your Activity Log, click the downward-facing arrow icon in the upper right corner of your Facebook page to open the settings menu, and click Activity Log. The Activity Log is — you guessed it — a log of all your activity on Facebook, including comments, likes, and updates to your profile.

In the Activity Log, find the comment you want to delete, click the pencil icon to the right of the comment, and click Delete.

Delete a comment someone else made on your Timeline

While you can delete many things from Facebook through the Activity Log, you cannot, for some reason, delete posts that other people have made to your Timeline. You can still see posts that other people have made to your Timeline in the Activity Log, but you’ll only be able to hide them from your Timeline — not delete them.

Find the comment

To delete a comment made by someone else on your Timeline, you will need to go to your Facebook profile and find the comment on your Timeline. To help narrow your search, you can use the handy quick-jump menu on the right side, but if you click a year in the quick-jump menu, be sure to change the visible posts from HIGHLIGHTS to All Stories — otherwise, you may not see the post.

Delete the comment

Once you’ve found the comment you want to delete, click the downward-facing arrow icon to the right of it and click Delete.

Delete a ‘Like’

You can’t really “delete” a like so much as you can unlike something. The easiest way to do this is from the Activity Log — simply find the item (post, photo, comment, or link) you want to unlike and click the pencil icon to the right of it. Click Unlike and it will cease to appear on your Timeline.

Delete a photo

This is probably obvious, but you can only delete photos that you’ve uploaded to Facebook. To delete a photo, find the photo and click on it to open it. At the bottom of the photo, you should see several menu options. Click Options and then click Delete This Photo to delete the photo.

Delete a photo album

To delete an entire photo album that you’ve uploaded, go to Photos > Albums and click the album you want to delete. In the top right corner of the album page, you should see a small button with a gear on it. Click this and then click Delete Album from the drop-down menu that appears. Note that you cannot delete your Cover Photos or your Profile Pictures albums this way — you’ll need to delete each photo from those albums individually.

Delete a tag

While you can’t delete photos that other people have uploaded to Facebook, you can untag yourself so that they don’t show up on your Timeline. To do this, find the tagged photo and click on it to open it. To the right of the photo, you should see your name among a list of the people tagged in the photo. Hover over your name until an info card with your Facebook profile pops up. At the top of this info card, you should see Tagged by [the person who tagged you] and Remove tag. Click Remove tag to delete the tag.

Delete life events

Whenever you update your profile, Facebook publishes an update to your Timeline. You can hide this update or you can delete it — but deleting it will also delete the updated information (for example, if I delete this post that says I started working at CNET, that information will also be removed from the Work and Education section of my profile).

Find the life event in the Activity Log

To find Timeline events, go to the Activity Log and click About in the left-hand Filters menu. When you find the event you want to remove, hover over it until you see the time appear in tiny gray letters. Click these gray letters to go directly to the post.

Delete the life event from your Timeline

Once you’ve found the post, click the downward-facing arrow icon to the right of it and click Delete. You’ll see a warning window that will tell you that deleting this from your Timeline will also remove information from the About section of your profile; click Delete again to proceed.

Delete a Facebook message

You can delete individual messages from Facebook Messages. This isn’t particularly useful, since it doesn’t delete the messages from your friend’s inbox (only yours), but I suppose it might help if you want to get rid of incriminating evidence. To do this, click the Messages icon and click See All at the bottom of the Messages menu to see your entire inbox. Find the conversation you want to delete messages from and click it to select it. In the upper right corner, click the gear icon and choose Delete Messages. from the drop-down menu. Check boxes will appear next to all of the messages in the conversation, tick the check boxes next to the messages you want to delete and then click Delete in the lower right corner.

Delete a Facebook conversation

You can also delete entire Facebook conversations. To do this, open the conversation you want to delete either in the full inbox view or as a chat window, click the gear icon in the upper right corner, and click Delete Conversation.

Facebook has a brand-new tool for deleting old posts, but it’s not very good. Not only is it unavailable on Facebook’s desktop site—because rollouts—but even if it was, there are much better tools you can use right now to delete your old Facebook posts without deleting Facebook itself.

A word on that before we begin: I don’t agree with Facebook’s stances about allowing content from important people that would otherwise get a layperson kicked off the service, but I still use Facebook to keep in touch with my friends and local communities. I don’t judge anyone who wants to leave the service, but I’m also not going to put off helping those who are sticking around.

How Facebook’s “Manage Activity” works

If you can access the feature via the iOS or Android version of Facebook—or Facebook Lite, where it is presumably available right now for iOS or Android —you’ll find it in your Activity Log.

Pull up your profile, tap on the three dots next to the blue “Add Story” box, and tap on Activity Log. From there, tap on “Manage Activity,” and tap on the “Your Posts” option that pops up. You’ll now be taken to this screen, where you’ll be able to tap individual posts that you want to archive or trash:

Father’s Day CBD Bundle

Send Dad flowers
Well, send him a bundle of calming CBD products made from USDA-certified organic, Kentucky-grown, whole-flower hemp oil, at least.

When you archive content on Facebook, only you’ll know it’s there going forward—you and Facebook, that is. Your friends won’t be able to see it. The trash option should be obvious, but there’s one little catch there, too; anything you trash gets dumped into a digital recycling bin that starts a 30-day countdown for your posts. Once that time is up, the post is gone forever. Should you have a change of heart, simply go into the trash and undelete your post while you can.

Since there’s no “select all” option on this tool, be prepared for a lot of tapping if you’re planning to sanitize your account. I bet you’ll give up before you clear out your posts, so you might as well not even bother now. There are better solutions.

Facebook’s website gives you a better tool for deleting old posts

If you’re on the desktop version of Facebook, I’m a fan of its “Manage Posts” tool, which you’ll find to the right of your “Posts” section on your profile:

The app’s new ‘Manage Activity’ feature gives users better control over their content.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Ever wish you could quickly and easily delete all those Facebook posts from your past? Have a job interview coming up and want to make all your personal pictures disappear?

Well, now Facebook is offering a way to do that.

Facebook has introduced a new feature called “Manage Activity” designed to help you sift through old content and—if you want—delete old Facebook posts.

But what exactly is Manage Activity and how does it work?

What is Manage Activity?

Manage Activity finally allows you to archive or delete content—including pictures and posts—in a bulk action. Previously, you’d have to delete posts and photos individually.

The feature, which makes controlling your digital footprint significantly easier, is currently available on the company’s mobile app and for those using Facebook Lite, a separate app.

The feature will be available for desktop users at a future date, the company said.

So where can you find Manage Activity and how do you use it? After making sure your phone is running the latest version of the Facebook app, accessing the new function is just a few clicks away.

How to delete old Facebook posts with Manage Activity

To access Manage Activity, first select your profile photo from the home screen. Once you have been taken to your profile, click on the three horizontal dots below your profile picture to access your profile settings. From there, select your Activity Log.

Next, simply select the Manage Activity option at the top of the screen.

How to remove a post from a facebook groupFacebook

A small menu should pop up at the bottom of the screen.

Click on the “Your Posts” option in order to see a list of your photos, videos, and more.

How to remove a post from a facebook groupFacebook

A list should now appear containing posts you made from the latest to oldest. Each post will have a checkbox next to them to allow you to quickly select all the content you wish to remove or archive.

But what if you have years worth of Facebook content? Do you have to endlessly scroll to access older data?

Manage Activity addresses this issue by letting you filter your posts. To do so, select the “Filters” option near the top-left of the screen.

You should then be presented with three options: category, date, and people. There may be more filter options coming in the future, according to the Washington Post.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

The three options allow you to filter old content based on that criteria.

By selecting category, you can view anything from just photos and videos, or posts made to Facebook from third-party apps.

As expected, selecting the date option grabs content based on a start date and end date provided by the user.

The people selection will give you the option to search from your friends list before being presented with content linked to them. For example, if you tagged your friend in a post about a concert you attended, such posts will show up.

Once you’ve decided which posts you want to get rid of, Facebook’s new tool gives you two options: the ability to archive them (if you want to look at the posts again) or to delete them.

You can find all the posts you’ve you’ve chosen to store away by selecting the “Archive” button.

Similarly, the trash option at the top of the menu will show you which posts you recently deleted.

Facebook will keep posts in the trash for 30 days before being deleted. You’ll be able to access the trash and restore or clear out all your posts within that time frame.

The new tool may be a little late for people who have been yearning to clean up their Facebook profile, but it is certainly easier than deleting things one by one.

Facebook and privacy have a complicated, ever-changing relationship, though things seem to be moving toward stability now that they’ve agreed to make sharing opt-in. Still, some folks may want to walk away from Facebook and leave no trace. Exfoliate is an Android app that lets you permanently take down all or some of your posts, likes, and comments from your own or your friends’ walls.

Rob Lightner is a tech and gaming writer based in Seattle. He has reviewed games, gadgets, and technical manuals, written copy for space travel gear, and composed horoscopes for cats.

Maybe you woke up from a long night and realize you’ve made a horrible mistake, posting dozens of embarrassing pictures (or worse) to Facebook. Maybe you’ve just decided that your five years on Facebook were experimental and you’d rather move on.

In either case, deleting more than a couple of posts or pictures can be a major pain. CNET’s Elinor Mills recently wrote up a neat Android tool called Exfoliate that can scour your Facebook history and permanently delete some or all content. (iPhone users should see it come to the App Store soon.) Here’s how to use it:

Facebook Wall before Exfoliate.

  1. Install Exfoliate from the Android Market.
  2. Tell Exfoliate which data to delete. This is mostly straightforward, organized into time and content type. If things don’t seem to work out the first time, try again with Background Override checked. If you’re on a network you trust, you can uncheck Use Https Only to speed up the operation considerably. Step 2: Choose data to delete.
  3. Sign in to Facebook. Exfoliate doesn’t retain your log-in information.
  4. Authorize Exfoliate as a Facebook app. It needs a lot of permissions, as it has a lot of work to do.
  5. Now is your last chance to reconsider. Start Exfoliate by tapping the big button on the bottom of the screen. Step 5: Begin processing.
  6. If you get cold feet or suddenly remember you need to save a pic or two, you may have a chance to stop some deletions. Exfoliate starts with the oldest data, so you can tap the cancel button and hope you caught it in time. If not, it’s gone forever, so think carefully.
  7. This is a slow process. If you’re deleting more than a few posts, you should probably leave it running and plugged in overnight. Facebook Wall after Exfoliate.

That’s it. As with any other app or service that makes irrevocable changes, you should think carefully before using it. For some users, though, Exfoliate could be a life-saver.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Facebook groups can be both unbelievably helpful and fun for a variety of hangs, from gathering with your high school graduating class to sharing stories and theories with other like-minded people who want to chat about aliens to finding jobs and selling furniture. But at some point, all good things come to an end.

When you’re ready to move on from a Facebook group you created — be it because the group turned into something you didn’t intend on it becoming or because you simply no longer use it — you’ll want to delete it.

There are a few things you should know before deleting your Facebook group. You can only do so if you’re an admin and you created the page. If you’re an admin but didn’t create the page, you can only delete the page if the original creator chooses to leave it. It’s an irreversible and permanent action, and you cannot archive a group. Group members aren’t notified when you delete a group.

If you decide it’s the right decision for you, here’s what to do.

Navigate to “Groups”

How to remove a post from a facebook group

From your Facebook home page, also known as the News Feed, click “Groups” in the left menu and select your group. If you don’t see Groups, click “See More,” which should show Groups as an option. Then, find the group you want to delete, and navigate to it.

Remove all the members

How to remove a post from a facebook group

A group must be completely empty in order to delete it. So, once you’ve navigated to the group you want to delete, you’ll want to click on “Members” below the name of the group. There, you’ll be able to see everyone who is a member of that group. Click “More” next to each member’s name, select “Remove from group,” and click “Confirm.” You need to remove every single person from the group manually.

Leave the group

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Once you’ve removed all of the other members, make sure to remove yourself by selecting “Leave group” next to your name.

Once you leave, the group will be deleted, and you’ll have to start all over if you want to set it up again.

En español | Whether you have decided to quit Facebook once and for all or you simply want to take down old posts you regret publishing, the world’s largest social media site hasn’t made it easy to properly remove content — until now.

Previously, Facebook was under fire for making its process convoluted if you wanted to take down a photo, comment or like. And those who wanted to delete their account altogether might unknowingly leave a digital footprint, such as a message sent to someone still active on the platform.

Thankfully, a new Facebook feature, called Manage Activity, simplifies the deletion of posted content, both in bulk and individually, all in one place.

This includes the option to privately archive your posts, to be kept for your eyes only and not completely removed from Facebook. So you could, say, save a post you wrote in 2008 that you still find funny — like a haircut gone wrong and your friends’ hilarious reactions to it — but that you don’t want a potential employer to see.

Facebook is the most popular social media platform worldwide by far; YouTube is the second. In March, Facebook had an average of 1.73 billion daily users around the globe, according to the company. That’s when much of the world began sheltering in place to avoid coronavirus infections.

As of May, nearly a quarter of Facebook’s 232.7 million users in the United States were 55 and older, according to NapoleonCat, a social media management system based in suburban Warsaw, Poland. Another 15 percent were ages 45 to 54.

So if, like much of the world, you have a Facebook account, read on to learn how to use Manage Activity and delete or save posts that you no longer want to share.

How to get started

At the time of this writing, Facebook said it is rolling out its Manage Activity feature to users of its mobile app. But those who access Facebook on a web browser will have it available “soon”; the company doesn’t specify a date.

Until then, these step-by-step instructions are for those using a smartphone or tablet.

1. Open the Facebook app.

2. At the bottom of the screen, tap the blue tab that says Go to Activity Log.

If you don’t see it, tap the three horizontal lines at the top right of the app. Select Settings & Privacy | Settings | Activity Log under Your Facebook Information.

3. At the top of the Activity Log screen you should see options for Filters, Archive and Trash.

4. Tap the Filters tab to view and manage your posts in bulk and filter them to help you sort and find what you’re looking for. This way you can find posts with a certain date range, specific people or items such as photos or videos.

5. You’ll see options pop up from the bottom of your screen, where you can tap Category, Date or Friends.

If you tap Category, a new menu will appear with options for all posts; text updates, check-ins, notes and more; photos and videos; and posts from other apps.

If you tap Photos and Videos, you will see the posts by date (newest on top), and you can select posts one by one by ticking the little box or selecting All.

6. Once you make a selection, choose to Archive or Delete.

Archive This option is for Facebook content you no longer want others to see but that you want to keep for yourself.

Delete Use this feature to move posts you no longer want into the trash. The trash will stay there for 30 days before being deleted unless you choose to manually delete or restore the posts before then.

If you want to review your decisions, tap the Archive or Delete tab, at the top of the screen. Tap one of the posts and you will have a couple of additional options, such as changing from Archive to Delete or vice versa; Restore the post to reverse your decision and to View the specific post.

To return to previous menu options, tap the arrow back button, at the top left of the screen.

Other privacy features to check into

A video walkthrough of some of these Manage Activity options is available here.

Facebook says its Manage Activity feature is its most recent offering to make it easier for account holders to manage their experience on its platform.

It builds upon other new tools: Off-Facebook Activity allows you to clear the information Facebook receives from apps and websites you visit outside of the platform. Privacy Checkup helps you control who can see your profile information, what you share and how others can use your information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I just leave the group without deleting the members? What will happen with the group chat?
A: You may choose to. But if you are the creator leaving the group chat in that way will not automatically delete the whole group. It will continue to be active without your presence.

Q: I tried the Delete Conversation. In effect, the group chat disappeared. Does it mean that the group is deleted?
A: When you long press the group chat name under the Groups tab, it will give you an option that can be accessed quickly. One of these is the Delete Conversation tab. But it will only erase the conversation within your Messenger app alone. It means that the group chat is still alive. You will see it again once a message arrived for that group chat. Also, other members can still access and view those messages you deleted. Because those messages can still be found on their own Facebook Messenger app.

Q: What will happen on the messages inside the deleted group chat?
A: All messages from the group chat will be found on your archived. You can access them using messenger web.

As stated in the introduction part, deleting a group chat is irreversible. All the information shared through the deleted group chat is removed from all the members and can no longer be recovered. Make sure that you have made up your mind and that important data from the group chat are saved and backed up before deleting it.

I’m not sure if I am the only one who didn’t know how to do this, so I thought I would share what I (finally) figured out…

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Facebook is a great way to connect with friends or follow blogs and brands that you like. However, it isn’t always the most straightforward social media to use. Over the past 5 months, I have received, from various friends of mine, around 10 invites to like pages. I went to each page and decided whether I wanted to like them or not. Once I liked them, they were removed from my invite list. However, what if I didn’t want to like the page? I couldn’t find a way to remove the invite.

Okay, this is the point where some of you are saying “DUH” doesn’t everyone know how to do that? Well, let me show you why it may not be obvious to everyone. Take this page shown below as an example. Now, I have nothing against Tim McGraw, but if someone invited me to like his page, I wouldn’t do it.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

So, I would hover over the image and wonder what to do. Maybe I would visit the page, come back and still wonder what to do. Then I might give up and just leave the invitation there while cursing the person who sent it to me. Damn Tim McGraw fan sending this invite… grr. Then every time I would login to Facebook I would see the little number next to “Like pages” reminding me that I have an invite to like Tim McGraw’s page. What is a non-country fan to do?

How to remove Facebook page invites

What you can’t see too well in the example above is that when you hover over the image on Facebook you actually get an “x” in the upper right-hand corner. Just click that “x” and the invite is removed. So easy! Yet, not always so obvious! Below is an example where it is REALLY obvious what you should do. But, c’mon, who wouldn’t want to like Cheezburger?

How to remove a post from a facebook group

I hope that I have helped at least one person who may have been wondering the same thing that I was wondering!

Is there something you can’t figure out how to do on Facebook or any other social media account? Let me know, and maybe I can help you out!

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Headlines during the past few weeks have been ablaze with how Cambridge Analytica misused data mined from 87 million users via a Facebook app, creating major, new concern about personal privacy. While many people knew companies were able to mine some general data about you (how else could they target their ads?), it turns out they know a lot more. Facebook’s Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly stated that the company will be making changes to better protect user privacy. But observers are skeptical – in large part because Facebook’s business model depends on ad-targeting, which relies on personal user data.

If you want to know how to delete your Facebook account – or are considering taking a break until you are satisfied the company has addressed users’ privacy concerns – there are a few things you’re probably considering.

What information has Facebook collected about you?

Facebook has a tool that allows you to download a ZIP file that includes all of the personal data the platform has collected from your account. Looking at a preview of that archive can be surprising because while it includes things you might expect – like your About Me description (work, relationship status, education, where you live, etc.) – it digs far deeper too.

In fact, the zipped archive reveals that Facebook records any metadata that was attached to the photos you uploaded, as well as the ads you clicked and their topics, the apps you have added, a history of your chat conversations, your IP addresses, and unique facial recognition data that helps others identify you.

The more information they have, the more value you bring

Sure, Facebook changed the rules in 2015 about what information a third-party can collect, limiting useful data like the information collected from a “friend’s” account. That could be considered a start, except that third-party organizations don’t need a lot of detail to start targeting and mining more. Your name, hometown, and gender offer enough details to point them to other available marketing databases and build a fuller profile of you. The more complete a profile they have, the more targeted ads can be – getting you to act. That makes you an incredibly valuable asset.

Are you really done with Facebook?

If you’re worried about actually holding on to all of your memories, you’re probably conflicted about deleting your Facebook account. After all, there’s no reason for you to lose them just because some third-party sites have them, too. The good news is you have options.

First, you can simply deactivate your account, which essentially suspends your profile. No one can find your profile and they cannot send you messages, but you can log back in to reactivate your account later. Keep in mind, though, that this doesn’t solve the data privacy issue since Facebook still has access to all the information attached to your account.

A more complete approach is to delete your account. To back up your photos and memories, you have two choices.

    Archiving Facebook accounts

As we said, Facebook has a way to download EVERYTHING as a ZIP file. They’ve got a few security questions you’ll have to answer first (apparently now is the time they worry about who can access your files) but once you’ve passed the check, you can grab the ZIP file. It takes three steps:

    1. Click the “down arrow” at the top right of any Facebook page and select Settings
    2. Below the General Account Settings section, select Download a copy of your Facebook data
    3. Click Start My Archive

Of course, there are some more details you may want to consider, and Wired has a full exploration of the how to download your archive and access your files.

Back up before you delete Facebook

Grabbing a ZIP file of your data from Facebook is thorough, but it’s cumbersome to navigate and, once you delete your account, it’s unclear that you can automatically reload the information to a new profile if you decide to return to Facebook later.

With a subscription to Acronis True Image 2018, you can create a backup of your Facebook profile. That means you can go directly into your backup to retrieve an old photo or contact, without having to navigate the index tool Facebook’s ZIP file uses. Plus, if you later decide that Facebook has taken sufficient steps to protect your information, you can quickly restore your backup to a new profile – placing all of your photos, albums, account information, recent messages, etc. in the new account.

And if you are evaluating all of your social media accounts, it’s good to know that Acronis True Image 2018 also provides social media backup for Instagram, so all of your photos and contacts on that platform can be preserved the same way.

    Deleting your Facebook account

If you still want to delete your Facebook account once you’ve backed up your data, it’s as simple as one click. You just need to go to Delete My Account and all of your data will be wiped from the platform.

    Final thought

“Pulling the plug” on your Facebook account can be a relief. Given how ingrained social media has become in our society, it can also be daunting, too. Having a way to restart after the dust settles offers an essential safety blanket in uncertain times.

Have you ever applied for a job and when asked to link your Facebook profile wonder, “Do I want these people to see my last few posts?”

What about a relationship you wish you could get rid of every photo of? Or maybe you occasionally get passionate about a certain subject, only to realize you’ve gone overboard on posts about it.

Whatever the reason behind you wanting to delete posts, notes, photos, videos and more en masse, there’s good news. Facebook is slowly rolling out a new feature that’s going to make your life a lot easier.

With the Manage Activity feature, you can manage a large group of posts at once, deciding whether to archive or permanently delete them. This saves you the hassle of having to scroll through and delete each individual post.

It’s still currently in beta testing, so you may only have the tool available on the mobile app or website, if either. If you do have access, here’s how to use the Manage Activity feature on the app and site.

How to use Facebook’s Manage Activity feature on the mobile app

    1. Open the Facebook app on your phone or tablet.

    2. Open the app’s Settings Menu.

    3. Tap your name to go to your profile.

    4. Select the ellipsis button to open your profile settings menu.

    5. Choose Activity Log.

    6. In the top menu, tap Manage Activity.

    7. In the pop-up window that appears, tap “Your Posts”

    8. Check off the posts you no longer want publicly visible.

    9. Select either Archive or Trash.

    10. If you want to move a post from Archive or Trash, at the top of the “Your Posts” page, select either Archive or Trash, depending upon where you want to move the post to.

    11. Once again, select any posts you want to move.

    12. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see two options for places to move your posts. Tap Archive or Trash to move it from one location to the other location.

    13. Tap Restore to put the post back on your Facebook profile.

How to use Facebook’s Manage Activity feature on the desktop website

    1. Log into Facebook.

    2. In the upper left corner, click your profile photo.

    3. Select See your profile.

    4. In the Posts box, select Manage Posts.

    5. Click Filters in the top right corner of the pop-up window.

    6. Adjust your filters by year, poster, privacy settings, and tagged posts.

    7. Check the boxes next to the posts you want to manage or choose “Select All.”

    8. Click Next.

    9. Choose to Hide Posts, Remove Tags, or Delete Posts.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Similar to many other social platforms, Facebook doesn’t allow photo editing after posting. Once the photos have been uploaded, you can’t alter them in any way. This might seem unfair to some users, but things look like they won’t change any time soon, if ever.

Let’s examine the reasons why and see what can be done.

Facebook and Editing Photos After Posting

For example, you’re at a party and you’ve made a series of snaps with your buddies. You decide to upload the pics to show the rest of your friends what a good time you’re having. You open Facebook and upload the best photos of the bunch, forgetting to add stickers or crop out a friend that’s passed out drunk on the couch.

If you open your post again and try to edit it, you’ll only be able to edit the photo description, tagged people, and place where the photo was taken. You’ll also be able to set the photo’s visibility, and that’s where the editing options end.

Facebook’s adamant about not letting its users alter photos after uploading them, as that would open the Pandora’s box, so to say. It would allow people to edit in nudity or add other inappropriate stuff to the images that have already passed Facebook’s safety and guideline checks. Some crafty hackers might get revenge on their ex by altering their photos and getting them banned.

    What You Can Do

With photo editing clearly out of the picture, let’s see what can be done when you see that a photo you posted or embedded in a comment is the wrong one or could be improved upon.

For one, you can add new pictures to a picture post on your profile, group, or page, and replace the original photo. You can also delete and upload a new photo into the comment or status update. Finally, you can replace the embedded link of the image you included in a comment. Let’s see how to do these things.

Replace the Picture in a Post

Let’s say that you’ve published a post on your page or profile that includes a photo. Keep in mind that you’ll have to edit the photo on your computer. If you’d like to replace a photo in a post with its edited version, you should do the following:

Find the post you’d like to alter.
How to remove a post from a facebook group

    Select ‘Edit Post’

Click on three horizontal dots in the upper-right corner of the post.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Select the Edit Post option from the drop-down menu.

Click on the three horizontal dots in the right-hand corner

This will allow you to upload your new, better photo in the same post.

How to remove a post from a facebook group

Select the photo you’d like to add to your post and confirm. Now, you can go back and delete the original.

Go back to your post and click the three-dots again.

Click ‘Delete Photo’ to remove the original, unedited version.

Replace the Photo in a Comment

You can replace a photo in the comment in a similar way. You’ll have to edit the photo on your computer and then upload it instead of the original. Here’s how it’s done:

    1. Find the comment that includes the problematic picture. Here’s our comment:

    5. Click on the text box of your comment and press together Shift and Enter keys on your keyboard to open another row.
    6. Click on the Camera icon.
    7. Select the edited version of your original photo.
    8. Click on the text box again.
    9. Press Enter. The final result might look like this:

Change the Photo Link in the Comment

Facebook lets users link to photos from external sites in their comments. Since you’re aiming to replace a link to a photo that’s on another site, you won’t be able to edit it. Here’s how to change the link to a photo on a Facebook comment:

    1. Find the problematic comment. Our initial comment looks like this:

    2. Click on the three little dots next to your comment.
    3. Select the Edit option.

    5. Replace it with the new one.
    6. Click on the Save button. The final result might look like this:

    Frequently Asked Questions

Facebook won’t let me add a photo to my post, what’s happening?

There are several reasons your photo may fail to load. One is that your edited image isn’t compatible, try uploading the original image. If the original uploads and the edited doesn’t, there’s an issue with the image.

You can change the image format (like changing to JPEG), you can also resize it. Facebook recommends images under 15MB. If your photo is a PNG file it needs to be under 1MB. Play around with the image or use a different photo editing app to force it to upload.

How can I edit my cover photo?

If you want to edit your cover photo, you don’t have many options aside from uploading a new one. Similar to profile pictures, you can click the edit icon and upload a new image.

For anonymity, be sure to uncheck the publish to your wall option. This means that you can upload a new image without letting everyone on your timeline know you’ve done so.

Can I add a frame to my profile picture after it’s uploaded?

Yes! This is one thing you can do even after you’ve updated your profile image. Click the edit icon on your profile picture and select the ‘Add a Frame’ option. Scroll down and choose the frame you like.

If you want to remove the frame follow the same process but choose a new frame or click the option to remove it completely. Another great feature is the option to set a frame to last for a certain period of time. Set from one day to months, to ‘Custom’ so that you won’t need to go back and delete it.

    Be Careful What You Upload

It doesn’t seem like Facebook will change its policy on editing uploaded photos anytime soon. Therefore, be very careful with the photos you post.
