How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Cortana is the latest digital personal assistant to make its way into a market already dominated by Apple and Google. Cortana officially arrives for the desktop in Windows 10. That’s largely a good thing, though it’s still important to know how to reduce Cortana’s presence.

In case you hadn’t heard, Cortana is Microsoft’s version of the same kind of voice-activated (if desired) computer assistant you’ve come to expect from “Ok Google” and Siri. You can for example say, “Hey Cortana” and ask it for the weather or sport scores or see how your stocks are doing.

So far the buzz about Cortana is generally positive and we are looking forward to it. For Windows, it seems like an idea whose time has come. It especially makes sense when you consider that Microsoft wants to fit Windows 10 onto more tablet-like devices, so being able to just tell your computer what you want will be more efficient and easier than using a touch keyboard all the time.

On Windows 10, Microsoft has integrated Cortana right into the taskbar, which is fine since Google has no problem slapping its search feature on Android’s home screen.

Unlike Android, however, Windows 10 easily allows you to change how much space Cortana takes up on the taskbar. By default, it appears as a search bar that says “Ask me anything”.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

It’s not ugly or detracting but it is rather wide and for folks with smaller displays, it might take up too much screen real estate. Luckily, if you right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar, you can scroll up to “Search” and change how much space Cortana occupies.

Here, we’ve just elected to show the search icon, which is just a simple circle.

Finally, if you just want Cortana off your taskbar completely, then you can just disable it.

Note, however, this will not turn Cortana off. If you have it, for example, set up to listen for your voice, then even if you remove Cortana from the taskbar, it will still respond when you say “Hey Cortana”.

To completely turn Cortana off, as in, it will no longer work, respond, or collect information, then you first need to open the Cortana search feature and click on the gear icon along the left-hand edge.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

This will open the settings where you can turn “Hey Cortana” on or off, change your name, or, most importantly, turn the whole thing off right at the very top where it says “Cortana can give you suggestions, ideas, reminders, alerts, and more.”

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Once disabled, Cortana will revert to the traditional Windows search feature, indicated on the taskbar by a magnifying glass. When you click on it, it will instead let you “Search the web and Windows” (via Bing).

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

You can still change the way search appears on your task bar, however, electing to show the search box, the icon, or disable (remove) it altogether. If you do decide you want to disable it, you can still access search through the old keyboard shortcut “Windows + S”.

It remains to be seen how much of an impact Cortana will have on regular desktop users. Microsoft has carefully incorporated it without overwhelming everything else. Many new Windows 10 users are unlikely to know the full extent of what Cortana can do, so it may take time for it to be a household name.

If you have any questions or comments you would like to add, we encourage you to leave your feedback in our discussion forum.

Cortana has been a part of Windows for a while now, and it’s designed to make your life simpler. It’s effortless to search for anything online or on a pc with a voice-activated feature. However, because the Cortana app takes up important space on the taskbar, you may wish to remove it to create room for other applications. In the following article how to remove Cortana from taskbar will be discussed with appropriate solutions.

What really is Cortana?

Cortana is the voice-enabled virtual assistant that comes with Windows 10. Microsoft has provided Cortana for increasing the user’s productivity and time management. Cortana is very feature-rich, capable of managing calendars, setting meetings in Microsoft Teams, creating and managing lists, setting reminders and alarms, finding facts and information. Microsoft has revealed that 148 million people worldwide are currently using Cortana on their Windows 10 devices.

As Cortana is in a very competitive position, going against Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri, Microsoft has started to offer built-in benefits for users committed to its platforms. Apart from offering as a personal assistant, Microsoft has decided to embed Cortana in enterprise-level services such as Office 365, Outlook, LinkedIn, Bing, Microsoft Graph. Connected with such a broad range of products, Cortana can help users in their personal and professional life.

What does Cortana do?

Just as all other virtual assistant programs, Cortana works by collecting data from the user and making calculations around it. Some users are concerned about how much personal information Cortana is collecting and want to be in control. There are options for managing what Cortana can and can not do with your device. You may want to stop using Cortana actively, removing the Cortana button from Windows 10 taskbar or disabling Cortana completely.

A Windows Search box, which replaced Cortana, was one of the first features added to Windows 10 a few years back. It also takes up a significant amount of space on the taskbar. Hiding Windows 10 Search Box

There are several methods for getting rid of the search box.

Method 1:-

Right-click in the box or an empty place on the taskbar adjacent to it. Go to the menu and select Search. You can opt to only show the search indicator or to hide it entirely by selecting the Show search icon or Hidden.

First, consider displaying merely the search symbol — it resembles a magnifying glass and is nothing more than a button. You can still search by clicking on it, but it frees up a lot of room on the taskbar.

I entirely removed it in the following case – it was gone. This offers the taskbar a great, tidy design and quick access to the Start button.

Searching for items in Windows without the Search bar

It’s rather easy. Start entering your inquiry by hitting the Windows Key on your keyboard. The Windows Search Box appears as soon as you start typing. For instance, in this case, I just pressed the Windows key and began typing Windows Administrative Tools into the search box.

Cortana is a new feature that comes packaged with Windows 10. The feature is very similar to Siri that is found on the Apple iPhone that acts as your personal assistant. Cortana’s natural language search capabilities and her intelligent surfacing of news and notifications that matter to you help to tailor Windows 10 to suit your specific needs. However not everyone takes kindly to Cortana which warrants it to be disabled. Signing out from application might not be enough for some people that want to get rid of it from the task bar completely.

Since last few Builds, by default Cortana comes pinned to the taskbar. If you’re using Windows 10 Insider Preview, there is logically a possibility that you’re not interested in Cortana and also Cortana being in its development stage isn’t that efficient, which is at times annoying. Also it takes up a lot of space on the taskbar.

If you have tested Windows 10, and you did not like Cortana, disable it and make the search box an option to search apps and the internet.

You can convert the Cortana search box into an icon thus saving space. Also if you don’t want it at all you can completely remove it from the taskbar. However it will still be seen on the taskbar when you open the start menu.

Here’s how to remove Cortana’s Search Box from Taskbar

  1. Right click on an empty area on taskbar
  2. You will see a menu
  3. Select Search option from that menu
  4. You will see ‘Show Search Box’ option ticked
  5. Click on ‘Show Search Icon’ or click on ‘Disabled’

‘Show Search Icon’ option will just show a normal sized icon (circle) on the taskbar and ‘disabled’ will completely disable the Cortana tab. If you change it to an icon, it’ll show a circle like you can see below.

Disable Cortana

If you want to work on your system without Cortana, you can disable it.

  1. Go to search box
  2. Click on the hamburger icon at the top left
  3. Go to Settings
  4. You will see a description about Cortana and a toggle button below it
  5. Click on the toggle button to disable Cortana

However, Cortana is an amazing personal assistant even though it is in its testing phase, it delivers great productivity and is very helpful.

A small percentage of Windows 10 users frequently use Cortana as it is not as powerful as its digital personal assistants offered in smartphone operating systems. Moreover, Cortana is not available in all regions/countries. So, you might want to get rid of Cortana from your Windows 10 computer. Or, you might want to reinstall Cortana when it’s not working correctly.

With the May 2020 Update for Windows 10, Microsoft made several changes to Windows 10, including the built-in digital personal assistance Cortana.

Microsoft doesn’t want you to disable Cortana. You used to be able to turn off Cortana in Windows 10, but Microsoft removed that easy toggle switch in the Anniversary Update. But you can still disable Cortana via a registry hack or group policy setting. This transforms the Cortana box into a “Search Windows” tool for local application and file searches.

Cortana has become increasingly restrictive since Windows 10’s release. It was previously updated to ignore your default web browser. Cortana now always launches the Microsoft Edge browser and only uses Bing when you search. If that sounds like something you wouldn’t want to use, here’s how to turn it off.

Home Users: Disable Cortana via the Registry

If you have Windows 10 Home, you’ll have to edit the Windows Registry to make these changes. You can also do it this way if you have Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise, but just feel more comfortable working in the Registry as opposed to Group Policy Editor. (If you have Pro or Enterprise, though, we recommend using the easier Group Policy Editor, as described in the next section.

Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.

You should also make a System Restore point before continuing. Windows will probably do this automatically when you install the Anniversary Update, but it couldn’t hurt to make one manually–that way, if something goes wrong, you can always roll back.

Then, open the Registry Editor by pressing Windows+R on your keyboard, typing “regedit” into the box, and pressing Enter.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Navigate to the following key in the left sidebar:

If you don’t see a “Windows Search” key (folder) below the Windows folder, right-click the Windows folder and select New > Key. Name it “Windows Search”.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Right-click the “Windows Search” key (folder) in the left pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Name the value “AllowCortana”. Double-click it and set the value to “0”.

You can now close the registry editor. You’ll have to sign out and sign back in or restart your computer before the change takes effect.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

To undo your change and restore Cortana in the future, you can just return here, locate the “AllowCortana” value, and delete it or set it to “1”.

    Download Our One-Click Registry Hack

Rather than editing the registry yourself, you can download our Disable Cortana registry hack. Just open the downloaded .zip file, double-click the “Disable Cortana.reg” file, and agree to add the information to your registry. We’ve also included an “Enable Cortana.reg” file if you’d like to undo the change and re-enable Cortana later.

You’ll have to sign out and sign back in–or restart your computer–before the change will take effect.

These .reg files just change the same registry settings we outlined above. If you’d like to see what this or any other .reg file will do before you run it, you can right-click the file .reg and select “Edit” to open it in Notepad. You can easily make your own Registry hacks.

Pro and Enterprise Users: Disable Cortana via Group Policy

If you’re using Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise, the easiest way to disable Cortana is by using the Local Group Policy Editor. It’s a pretty powerful tool, so if you’ve never used it before, it’s worth taking some time to learn what it can do. Also, if you’re on a company network, do everyone a favor and check with your admin first. If your work computer is part of a domain, it’s also likely that it’s part of a domain group policy that will supersede the local group policy, anyway.

You should also make a System Restore point before continuing. Windows will probably do this automatically when you install the Anniversary Update, but it couldn’t hurt to make one manually–that way, if something goes wrong, you can always roll back.

First, launch the group policy editor by pressing Windows + R, typing “gpedit.msc” into the box, and pressing Enter.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.

Locate the “Allow Cortana” setting in the right pane and double-click it.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Set the Allow Cortana option to “Disabled” and then click “OK”.

You can now close the group policy editor. You’ll have to sign out and sign back in–or restart your PC–for this change to take effect.

To re-enable Cortana, return here, double-click the “Enable Cortana” setting, and change it to “Not Configured” or “Enabled”.

Microsoft’s Cortana and Windows Ink are two of the company’s newest innovations in how we interact with our computers. They aren’t merely gimmicks for those who know how to use them, they can fundamentally change the way you use your PCs if you have the right hardware and are prepared to put in the time mastering them.
However, some users understandably have privacy concerns with Cortana and may not want to use the service at all – likewise some users may not even care for the Windows Ink button that sits on the taskbar by default due to a lack of compatible hardware.
Similarly, due to a mastery of Windows gestures and keyboard shortcuts, some may find that the Windows task view button just takes up precious screen real estate that could be used for pinning more apps to the taskbar.

Here’s how to get rid of them.

How to remove Cortana, Windows Ink, and the Task View Button from the taskbar

    1. Right Click on the taskbar
    2. Scroll to Cortana
    3. Hover over the Cortana option and deselect “Show Cortana Icon”
    4. Deselect the Windows Ink Workspace Button
    5. Deselect the Task View button
    6. To restore these settings, simply repeat steps 1-5, albeit selecting instead of deselecting.

While Microsoft would like you to certainly use these Windows features, Windows 10 is all about free choice, and users who have more efficient workflows are free to disable what they like.

I n this tutorial, we are going to see how to disable Cortana in Windows 10 using registry. Windows 10 includes a number of interesting apps, but they can sometimes be quite annoying, especially if they don’t go through simple means. Cortana, a digital voice assistant pre-installed on Windows 10, is one of those Windows apps.

One of the main reasons to disable Cortana is that it consumes a lot of RAM, which leads to poor system performance.

How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10 using Registry

Step 1: Open the registry editor. Press Start + R, then type regedit in the prompt, then press Enter. Click Yes if you get a warning from the User Account Control.

Step 2: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Search. If “Windows Search” does not exist, we had to create it.

Right-click on Windows folder and choose New > Key. Call it Windows Search.

Step 3: Right-click on Windows Search and choose New > 32-bit DWORD Value.

Step 4: Name the DWORD AllowCortana. Click on it and make sure the value is “0”.

Step 5: Restart the computer (or log out and log back in). Cortana will be replaced by a regular search bar.

It’s possible that the next Windows update will restore Cortana to its proper place in Windows 10, so be sure to keep these instructions handy, just in case.

Cortana is part of Windows 10 in the locales where Cortana is available. If you don’t want the digital assistant to be visible to you, you can hide Cortana from the taskbar. You can also manage your privacy settings following the steps below.

To hide Cortana in Windows 10, May 2020 Update and later versions, select the Cortana icon in the taskbar and uncheck Show Cortana button.

In the May 2020 Update and later versions, you must be signed in to use Cortana. When you’re signed in, Cortana learns from certain data about you, such as your searches, calendar, contacts, and location. You can learn more in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

You can clear your chat history with Cortana on a device by signing out or by going to Cortana > Settings > Privacy. Then select the Clear button under Chat history.

To hide Cortana in Windows 10, November 2019 Update and earlier versions: On the taskbar, select Cortana, hover over Cortana on the menu, and then select Hidden from the side menu. This will also remove the search box from your taskbar. We don’t recommend hacking registry settings or similar measures, as this can make your operating system unstable or crash.

In the November 2019 Update and earlier versions, you can review and control exactly what personal information Cortana can access by going to the search box and selecting Settings on the left pane. You can also search “Cortana settings” in the search box on the taskbar, and select Cortana & Search settings from the results.

Note: Cortana is removed from the Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 Pro Education editions. See Windows 10 editions for education customers for more info.

In Windows 11, Cortana is hidden from the taskbar by default.

The Cortana digial assistant that’s built into Windows 10 never took off. The cool thing is you can disable it or remove it completely. Here’s how.

Microsoft’s attempt at a digital assistant, Cortana, built into Windows 10, never took off. In fact, in recent versions of Windows, the company has removed it from the search experience (19H1 build 18317). We have covered ways to limit its activity by disabling Cortana and replacing it with Windows Search. And Cortana made our list of disappointing Microsoft products. Disable Cortana on Windows 10

It’s worth noting that you don’t need to go through the more complex steps of completely removing it. You can disable Cortana – but it will still be there and possibly running in the background. It can also collect select search and other usage data.

Let’s take a look at that first since it’s a less invasive approach. Open Start > Settings > Privacy. Then from the left side, click on Microphone and turn off Cortana’s access to it. That will essentially make it useless for access to the Microphone, anyway.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Cortana on Windows 10 has been updated as a productivity tool and it is now an integral part of Microsoft’s vision for conversational computing and productivity.

Voice assistants are a great convenience when they work as intended. A wide choice of assistants has risen over the past few years, including Cortana, Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, but Cortana didn’t become as popular as the rival digital assistants.

As a result, Microsoft has been moving away from consumer-focused features and the assistant is slowly turning into a tool exclusively for productivity that will work best with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Cortana is now a regular system app that can be updated through the Microsoft Store in Windows 10 version 2004. Cortana also comes with a new chat-based interface, improved keyboard support, and you can also move it around the desktop.

If you’re not planning on using the assistant, you can now easily remove it from Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Before uninstalling Cortana, make sure that you right-click the taskbar and disable the Cortana button feature.

    How to uninstall Cortana

To remove Cortana from Windows 10 after upgrading to version 2004, follow these steps:

    1. Open Windows Search.
    2. Search for PowerShell and run it with administrator privilege.
    3. Type the following command to remove the assistant and press enter:
    4. Close PowerShell.
    5. Reboot.

Once you complete the above, you’ll no longer find Cortana as an installed app on Windows 10 or within the system settings.

Do note that this hack doesn’t get rid of all traces of Cortana. You’ll still have the Cortana button in the taskbar, but you can always turn it off from the taskbar’s context menu and ignore that option.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Also, Win+C shortcut will do nothing after removing the Cortana app, but you can use PowerToys Keyboard Remapper and reuse the shortcut for other Windows features.

For example, if your caps lock key is broken, you can configure PowerToys to enable caps lock when you press Win+C.

If you would like to restore Cortana functionality, simply head to the Microsoft Store and download the assistant again.

Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana is evolving and it’s here to stay, but it’s no secret that many Windows 10 users aren’t really big fans of Cortana.

Starting with the release of Windows 10 May 2020 Update, Cortana is now a standalone app and it’s no longer an integral part of the platform.

By default, Cortana ‘app’ is added to the Startup programs which are automatically run when you turn on your PC. If you don’t use Cortana or you want to disable its background presence on Windows 10, you can switch off the feature by following these steps:

    1. Open Task Manager by pressing CTRL+Shift+Escape keys together
    2. Click on the tab titled ‘Start-up’.

  • Look for a program called Cortana.
  • Click on Cortana to highlight it.

  • Click the ‘Disable’ option located at bottom-right.
  • How to uninstall the Cortana app on Windows 10

Since Cortana is now available as a standalone app on Windows 10, you can fire up the Windows PowerShell app and uninstall the app package.

To remove the Cortana app from your current user account, follow these steps:

    1. Open Start menu.
    2. Simply type ‘PowerShell’.
    3. Highlight ‘PowerShell’ result and click on ‘Run As Administrator’.

  • In PowerShell window, you can also run the following command to remove Cortana from all user accounts:

If you want to completely remove the Cortana package from everywhere including ‘WindowsApps’ folder, run the following command:

The above PowerShell commands remove the Cortana app and all traces of the digital assistant.

You can always reinstall the Cortana app by downloading the package from the Microsoft Store.

Considering the request “can I completely disable Cortana on Windows 10?”, this article would show you what to do to get rid of Ask me anything Windows 10 step by step.

But first off, you should bear in mind that setting up Cortana can provide you an easy way to get into almost all apps and settings. What’s more, even if you have tried to disable Cortana in Windows Creators Update on your own, you can see in task manager that it keeps running in the background.

Now if you still ask “how do I turn off Cortana Windows 10?”, you might as well move on for methods to remove Cortana permanently.

    Solutions:

    Solution 1: Disable Cortana Automatically

In terms of users who show no interest in using Command Prompt or PowerShell, there is much need and feasibility that you can try to make use of Advanced SystemCare to stop Cortana from running. You are able to disable Cortana with on switch in Advanced SystemCare. That is much more foolproof than what you are supposed to do in CMD command-line and PowerShell.

    1. Download, install and run Advanced SystemCare.

    2. Then under Toolbox, find out and click MyWin10 to get it in Advanced SystemCare quickly.

From this moment on, Cortana won’t run on Windows 10 as you have just stopped it from working.

Tips: Here if you manage to completely disable Cortana in the hope that Cortana not working error can be fixed, you can try to Repair Cortana under Fix Problem.

Now you can not only stop Cortana on Windows 10 but also fix Cortana not opening or not working issue with the assistance with MyWin10 in Advanced SystemCare.

Solution 2: Turn Off Cortana With Windows PowerShell

This is how to permanently disable Cortana in this first way. You must know that it is also how to turn off search in Windows 10. Raise a command in PowerShell and then check if you have eradicated Cortana from your computer.

Compared with other ways, Windows PowerShell can be more likely accepted to turn off Cortana completely by Windows 10. Though it will to some extent break search, try to use Windows PowerShell to get rid of Cortana quickly.

    1. Type in Powershell in the search box and right click the result to Run as administrator.

    2. In Windows PowerShell, copy the following command below and run it by hitting Enter key.

    3. Then restart your PC and you can see you remove Cortana permanently successfully on the taskbar in Windows 10.

Solution 3: Use Takeown to Disable Cortana Completely

This can be a new method for you to struggle to disable Cortana completely after Windows 10 Creators Update. Especially, once you decide to make use of this way, you need to get permissions to make changes to folders.

    1. Add Take ownership by Command Prompt.

    2. Double click This PC on your Desktop to turn it on.

    3. Open Windows folder in Local disk C:.

    4. In Windows folder, right-click the blank place to create a New Folder.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    5. Name the New Folder as SystemApps.bak.

    6. Double click SystemApps in Windows folder. You can see from this screenshot it is located just above SystemApps.bak.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    7. In SystemApps folder, copy all the folders and then paste them into SystemApp.bak folder.

Here you can try to move the Microsoft.Windows.The cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy folder at first, and check if it can permanently turn off Cortana on Windows 10. If not, copy these folders all to the new folder.

    Solution 4: Use Group Policy

For Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise or Education users, it is still open to you to remove Cortana completely from the taskbar on Windows 10 in local group policy.

    2. In Local Group Policy, follow up to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.

    3. Under Search, locate the sub-branch Allow Cortana in the right pane and double click it to configure it.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    4. In Allow Cortana window, select Disabled and click Apply and OK to take effect.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Tips: For Windows 10 Home, you can either choose to get the group policy online or try to create a new key named Allow Cortana in registry editor in order to turn off Windows 10 Cortana completely.

Now you are capable of making a new feature in Windows 10 – Cortana disappears from your PC.

As you can see, these three ways are designed to remove Cortana from taskbar on Windows 10. If you hope to disable Windows Cortana permanently, just perform the steps carefully on your computer.

Microsoft has, yet again, proven it has no ability to be original or creative with their integration of a digital personal assistant, called Cortana, into Windows 10.

This new built-in feature is just as unhelpful as it is annoying. It’s like Microsoft doesn’t even use their own products. On top of that, it is yet another invasion of my privacy.

For those of us who just want to search for a file on our PC, and nothing or nowhere else, the following instructions will help you do so. This will help you turn off and disable Microsoft’s Cortana from your Windows 10 computer as well as disable the Bing search results from the Start menu.

    Why Disable Cortana?

What is embarrassing is how much data Cortana collects about me yet fails to be able to locate most of anything I tell it to search for. This virtual assistant is virtually useless and is sucking system resources on top of that. Disabling Cortana will help regain a bit of privacy by preventing it from sending what we do on our personal computers back to Microsoft (for quality assurance purposes of course).

Remember, it is always recommended to create a system restore point before doing any registry modifications. A reboot may be required and it may take time for your search results to update to more relevant content.

    Limit Cortana Data Collection

To limit what data Cortana can collect about you, visit the Cortana settings panel. To access this panel, click on “Start“, then the “Settings” gear icon. Click the “Cortana” panel and turn off every toggle. Continue to the section where you can “Change what Cortana knows about me in the cloud“. A “Personal Information” page is retrieved in the same Start panel. When it loads, simply scroll to the very bottom and click “Clear“.

Cortana collects information about your typing and talking as well. To turn that off press the “Start” button, then the “Settings” gear icon. Next, select “Privacy” and look for “Speech, inking & typing” under which you can click “Stop getting to know me” (Note: Turning this off will disable dictation across Windows 10.)

Disable Cortana in Windows 10 Home

To Turn off Cortana completely on Windows 10 Home (Windows 10 Pro instructions) press the “Start” button at the bottom left of your screen and type “regedit” then press “Enter” on your keyboard. Copy and paste the below address into the address bar at the top:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Right click on the “Windows” directory and choose “New > Key” (folder). Enter “Windows Search“. Select the new “Windows Search” folder and in the right panel, right mouse click anywhere in the empty white section and choose “New > DWORD (32-bit) Value“. Enter “AllowCortana” making sure the “Value Data” is set to “0” (zero) Hexadecimal base.

You’ll need to restart your computer in order to implement these changes. You should also check to ensure that Cortana is disabled from your Startup process. Upon restart Cortana should be no more. Instead of “Ask me anything“, the new search box will only say “Search Windows” which seems to be much better now that it doesn’t search the internet when all you want is to search your local environment.

Disable Cortana in Windows 10 Pro

To Turn off Cortana completely on Windows 10 Pro press the “Start” button and search for and open “Edit group policy“. Next, go to “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search” and find and open “Allow Cortana“. Click “Disabled“, and press “OK“.

Restart your computer, and Cortana should be no more. Instead of “Ask me anything“, the new search box will only say “Search Windows” which seems to be much better now that it doesn’t search the internet for a locally stored document.

    Disable Cortana from Startup

To disable Cortana from starting with Windows right mouse click on an empty space within the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and select “Task Manager” from the context menu that appears. Otherwise, press the “Start” button at the bottom left of your screen and type “Task Manager” then press “Enter” on your keyboard.

The Task Manager window will appear. Select the “Startup” tab (see image below) and right mouse click on “Cortana“. Select “Disable” from the context menu that appears. This will disable the Cortana service from running when your PC starts up. Restart your PC to confirm that the service no longer runs at startup.

Disable Bing Search in Start Menu

The following registry edit is required in Windows 10 version 1803 Spring Update since it removed the ability to disable the web results option within the Start menu.

Begin by pressing “Start” and type in “regedit.exe” and inserting the following into the address bar:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

In the right side of the pane, right click and choose “New > DWORD (32-bit) Value” and enter “BingSearchEnabled“. Set the Value data to “0“.

We need to add another key. Right click and choose “New > DWORD (32-bit) Value” and enter “AllowSearchToUseLocation“. Set the Value data to “0“.

Double check to make sure that the “CortanaConsent” DWORD key exists with a Value data of “0“. If it doesn’t, you’ll want to create it. A reboot may be required to complete the process.

You will find below the steps to disable Cortana in Windows 10, in case you want to disable Cortana due to privacy concerns or due to Cortana consuming excessive RAM on your computer.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    Disable Cortana in Windows 10

Just like Siri on iPhone and Mac, Cortana is a cloud based personal assistant that comes pre-installed on Windows 10 computers.

While it was possible to disable Cortana using a single toggle in earlier versions of Windows 10, disabling Cortana after the Windows 10 Anniversary update is difficult.

Cortana is now said to be more integrated with Windows 10 operating system and disabling Cortana has reportedly caused problems with Windows Search feature.

However, if it has become necessary, you can still disable Cortana in Windows 10, using two different methods as provided below.

    1. Disable Cortana Using Settings

This method disables collection of information by Cortana and does not completely disable Cortana on your computer.

    1. Go to Settings > Cortana > Permissions & History and click on “Manage the Information Cortana can access from this device”.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    2. On the next screen, toggle OFF Location , Contacts, email, calendar & Communications history and browsing history .

    3. Next, go to Settings > Privacy > Diagnostic & feedback > Toggle OFF Improve inking & typing option

    4. Go to Settings > Privacy > Speech > Turn Off Online Speech Recognition .

    5. Go to Settings > Privacy > Inking & typing Personalization > Turn Off Getting to Know You section.

    2. Disable Cortana Using Registry Hack

Currently, the only way to completely disable Cortana in Windows 10 is by editing registry values in “Windows Search” folder located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.

Before making registry edits it is recommended that you create a system restore point. This will allow you to go back to the Restore Point, in case of problems.

    1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Run .

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    2. In the Run Command Window, type regedit and click on OK .

    3. On the registry editor screen, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows and see if you can find “Windows Search” folder.

If you cannot, right-click on Windows Folder > click on New > Key and Name the new key as “Windows Search”.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    4. Next, right-click on the newly created Windows Search Folder > click on New > DWORD (32-bit Value).

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    5. Name the New DWORD as “ AllowCortana “.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

    6. Restart your computer for the changes to be implemented.

Once your computer restarts, Cortana will be completely disabled on your computer, until the next major Windows update.

According to some users, completely Disabling Cortana using Registry Editor has brought bugs on their computer.

If you experience problems, you can enable Cortana back on your computer either by deleting AllowCortana or by double-clicking on AllowCortana and changing its Value Data from 0 to 1 .

Clear Your Data from Microsoft Servers

Just turning off Cortana will not delete your data from Cortana’s memory and Microsoft Servers.

In case you happen to switch Cortana back on, Cortana will still remember your browsing habits, preferences and generally everything that it had learned about you, before being disabled.

Hence, follow the steps below to clear your information from Microsoft’s cloud servers.

    1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Activity History and click on Manage My Microsoft Activity Data.

    2. On the next screen, you will be able to sign-in to the Microsoft Account linked your computer and clear your browsing, location, search and other data from Microsoft servers.

If, like me, your Windows 10 Cortana is non-responsive (or you just don’t want Cortana) we will show you how to remove and re-add Cortana which will perform a hard reset on it. This is the only real way to repair Cortana fully.

Cortana is hard baked into Windows 10 and there is no interface like ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS AND FEATURES to click and remove or reinstall Cortana. Cortana is a “modern app” which means every user has their own copy but you can use common tech tool called PowerShell that is built into Windows 10 to add or remove any Modern App and then reinstall it.

    SIMPLE VERSION For Techs:

    1. Create a new administrator on your Window 10 and sign in as that user
    2. Delete (or rename) C:\Users\

    \AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
UPDATE : AUG 9 2021 – If that path does not exist try removing:
    C:\Users\

    \Local\ Packages\ Microsoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy

  • Sign back in as the PROBLEM USER
  • Open PowerShell as an admin and type (or paste)
    Add-AppxPackage -Path “C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\Appxmanifest.xml” -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
  • LONG VERSION For Regular Folks:

    1. Create a new administrator on your Window 10 and sign in as that user (watch the video if you don’t know how to do this)
    2. Launch FILE EXPLORER (the new name for MY COMPUTER) and double click on the VIEW tab
    3. Put a check mark in FILE NAME EXTENSIONS and on HIDDEN ITEMS
    4. Double click your way through to C:\Users\ \AppData\Local\Packages\
    5. Delete (or rename) Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
      or Microsoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy
    6. Sign out of your temporary administrator account (in fact you can delete it now if you wish)
    7. Sign back in as the user with the Cortana problem
    8. Click the START button and scroll down through the apps to the WINDOWS POWERSHELL folder
    9. Click on the WINDOWS POWERSHELL folder
    10. RIGHT CLICK (very important) on WINDOWS POWERSHELL and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
    11. Type in this command and press the ENTER key
      Add-AppxPackage -Path “C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\Appxmanifest.xml” -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
    12. Test Cortana and it should work.

If you want to just remove Cortana altogether, stop at step 7 above.

Having Cortana dead has been annoying me for quite a few builds of Windows 10 Anniversary Update 1607 and I want to thank a few sites for reminding me that Cortana is just a modern app that can be removed through Windows 10 PowerShell, most notably THIS one and THIS one.

We have also written up a similar set of instructions on how to hard reset / repair / remove / Microsoft Edge Browser HERE.

Ignore the post of mine below. …I did use the command line as detailed above.

How To Hide Cortana Search Bar In Windows 10 : Cortana is a virtual assistant developed by Microsoft. Windows 10 provides the Cortana search bar box on the taskbar. You can directly search any query with this search box. But, it uses Microsoft Edge browser and the Bing search engine. That’s why many users don’t like Cortana. Microsoft doesn’t provide any option to disable Cortana permanently (Though you can disable Cortana with Registry hack). But, Microsoft provides the option to hide the Cortana search bar from the taskbar.

However, Cortana is also useful to search and open apps, software, and files on your Windows 10 PC. But, if you don’t like the Cortana search bar on the taskbar, then you can hide it.

Windows 10 provides the 3 options to show and hide the Cortana on a taskbar.

    1. Hidden : To hide Cortana search bar and icon from the taskbar.
    2. Show Cortana Icon : To show the only icon.
    3. Show Cortana Search Box : To show search bar.

Reasons to hide Cortana search bar from the taskbar in Windows 10:

There may be so many reasons to hide it. Below are some reasons.

    • You don’t like the search bar on the taskbar.
    • Cortana uses Edge browser with Bing search engine to search queries and you don’t like Bing and Edge browser.
    • You want to customize Cortana with your favorite search engine and browser.
    • You want to show only Cortana icon, rather than the search bar. (You have an option to do this)

How To Hide Cortana Search Bar In Windows 10

    1. Right-click on the taskbar (Not click on any icon, click on the empty area on the taskbar), and click on the “Cortana” option. You will see the three options: Hidden, Show Cortana icon, and Show Cortana search box.

    2. Click on the “Hidden” option to hide Cortana search bar. When you click on the Hidden option, then search box will immediately disappear from the taskbar.

How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

If you want to show again search box, then select “Show Cortana search box” option. However, you can also select the “Show Cortana icon” option. When you select this option, then it shows the only Cortana icon (round icon) on the taskbar. When you click on this icon, it shows Cortana search box. So, this option is useful, if you don’t like the large search box on a taskbar.

    Final Words

So, guys, this is the guide on how to hide Cortana search bar in Windows 10. Cortana is useful to search any open files, apps, and software on your PC. How to remove cortana from the windows 10 taskbar

Killing Cortana isn’t as easy as it used to be.

When Windows 10 first released, turning off Cortana was as simple as flipping a switch in the digital assistant’s settings, but Microsoft removed the option in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Now there’s no obvious way to disable Cortana—but it is possible using not-so-obvious methods.

Completely eradicating Cortana requires a quick and easy registry edit, which we’ll detail here. If you don’t want Cortana spying on you but also detest the idea of mucking with your PC’s deepest software innards, PCWorld’s guide to privacy-boosting Cortana tweaks can show you how to limit the personal information it sends Microsoft. Cortana will still run in the background with limited functionality if you don’t perform the registry edit, though.

How to turn off Cortana in Windows 10

Hold your horses! As simple as this is, it’s always a good idea to create a system restore point before editing the Windows registry—so go ahead and do that now. It only takes a minute. (Ironically, the easiest way to do so is to search for “restore point” with Cortana.)

With that out of the way, let’s start registry hacking.

Press Windows Key + R simultaneously on your keyboard to bring up the Run interface, then type regedit into the box and press Enter. Depending on your security settings you may be prompted to give Windows permission to run the Registry Editor. If so, do so.

Once the Registry Editor is open, navigate to the following folder in the left-hand navigation pane: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Search.

Here’s the only potentially tricky part: You might not see a Windows Search folder. If it isn’t there, right-click the Windows folder, select New > Key, and name it Windows Search.

With the Windows Search folder selected in the left-hand navigation pane, right-click in the main portion of the window and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. A new listing will appear in the main pane, ready to be named; christen it AllowCortana. Afterward, double-click it and in the box that appears, ensure that the Value Data is set to ‘0’—minus the quotation marks.

That’s it! Close the Registry Editor, then sign out of Windows 10. When you sign back in, Cortana will be long gone. The digital assistant’s former field remains in the Windows 10 task bar, but it now reads “Search Windows” and tellingly lacks Cortana’s all-seeing eye icon.

You won’t be able to use any Cortana-enabled features in the dumbed-down search field, like setting reminders, getting personalized news, receiving up-to-date travel info, or asking goofy questions. You will be able to search for files, system settings, and terms as before. That said, you won’t be able to tap Cortana’s smarts to perform natural language queries like “Find pictures from June” either, so narrowing down file search results may take a bit more work.

Speaking of which, wiping Cortana’s previous memories of you from Microsoft’s servers takes an extra step. Head to Microsoft’s privacy dashboard website, sign into your Microsoft account, and clear whatever personal data you want Microsoft to forget. Be warned: Your choices may also affect other Microsoft services, like Bing, Edge, and Maps.

Cortana isn’t totally dead, though. You’ll still see the process lurking in Task Manager if you pay attention. Kill it and it’ll immediately spring back to life. Your search queries nevertheless stay strictly local.

If you ever decide resummon Cortana, simply retrace your steps in the Registry Editor and either delete the AllowCortana value, or simply set it to “1” instead of “0.”

Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004) includes a new Cortana experience with a chat-based interface. In version 2004 or newer, you can type questions to Cortana instead of speaking aloud and the conversation will appear within a chat window.

When Cortana was integrated with the taskbar, the assistant would disappear when you focus on another window. With Windows 10’s new update, Cortana is now a windowed app that can be moved around your desktop and Microsoft has also added the ability to turn off Cortana at log-in.

The Cortana app also adds itself to the list of programs started when you boot your Windows device.

Every program in the Startup list adds a bit more boot time to Windows 10. Thankfully, in Windows 10 version 2004 it’s very easy to block Cortana from causing any delay.

To block Cortana at Startup and its background activity, follow these steps:

    • Simultaneously press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Click on ‘Startup’ column.
    • Select ‘Cortana’

    • Click on ‘Disable’.

If Cortana is already marked as Disabled then you can ignore it as it will not load when you boot your computer.

You can also remove Cortana from Startup programs by following these steps:

    • Open the Start menu and navigate to All apps.
    • Right-click on Cortana listing.
    • Select ‘More’ and click on ‘App settings’.

    • In Cortana app settings, toggle off Cortana under ‘Runs at log-in’.

You’ll need to reboot Windows 10 for these changes to take effect.

You can now easily uninstall Cortana

Starting with Windows 10 May 2020 Update, there is now an easy way to remove Cortana from Windows 10. As Cortana is now available as an app and is no longer tied to Windows Search, you can uninstall the digital assistant without breaking any other features on Windows 10.

If you’re not a fan of Cortana or the assistant is not available in your country, here’s how to uninstall it on May 2020 Update:

    • Open ‘PowerShell’ with administrator privilege.
    • Type ‘Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.549981C3F5F10 | Remove-AppxPackage’
    • Press enter.

It’s worth noting that the above steps would not completely remove Cortana from Windows 10. If you want to remove Cortana completely, you’ll still need to edit Windows Registry.

You can always reinstall/enable Cortana by downloading the app package from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10.
