How to right-click on a chromebook

Wondering how to right click on a Chromebook? Well, we’re gonna show you!

Chromebooks don’t have separate left and right buttons on the trackpad. This a design quirk that leaves some people confused.

Just how do you rich click on a Chromebook without attracting a USB mouse with buttons?

Well the solution is obvious once you know it, but many new Chromebook owners are left stumped nonetheless.

If you want to how to right click or middle click on a Chromebook, this article is here to help you.

Chromebook Touchpad Basics

Chrome OS enables “tap-to-click” by default. This means you don’t need to physically press down anywhere on the touchpad to click.

That said the lower half of most Chromebook touchpads is a ‘pressable’ button. You get feedback, hear a click, it feels natural, etc.

But as on Apple laptops “clicking” in the lower right-hand side of the touchpad does not create a ‘right-click’ response. In fact, it doesn’t matter where you click on the touchpad you’ll still be clicking normally.

Tap-to-click is used in Chrome OS to perform regular right click and middle click actions.

How To Right Click on a Chromebook

There are two ways to right click on a Chromebook using the touchpad.

The first is to tap once on the touchpad using two fingers. This will open the right-click menu over whatever element in focus.

For example, on the ‘desktop’ the right-click menu offers options to change the wallpaper and move the shelf to a different location; on web-pages the right-click menu shows actions like copy, paste, etc.

Another (less popular) way to right click on a Chromebook is to press the Alt key and tap on the touchpad using one finger, anywhere, at the same time. This will open the right-click context menu.

You don’t have to ‘tap’ either, you can press Alt and physically click to achieve the same thing.

How to Middle Click on a Chromebook

If you’ve ever used a mouse with a clickable scroll-wheel you’ll know how useful ‘middle click’ actions are.

In Chrome OS middle-click can do a number of things, depending on what is being clicked on.

The two most common uses are:

  • Middle click on a link to open it in a background tab
  • Middle click on an open tab to close it

Chromebook middle click is done using a three finger tap on your trackpad.

Three fingers tapped on the touchpad at the same time can take some to master. If you cant quite get to grips — should that be tips? — with the middle click gestures you can also hold the Ctrl key and click on a link to have it open in a new background tab.

How to Scroll on a Chromebook

Chances are you’ve already figured this one out by yourself, but we’ll recap it for completions sake anyhow.

To scroll a webpage on a Chromebook you need to place two fingers on the touchpad then move them up or down (depending on your desired scroll direction) to make the page travel.

You can enable so-called ‘Australian Scrolling’, where pushing two fingers up the trackpad makes the page move up by changing the option in Settings > Touchpad and Mouse > Scrolling .

Easy when you know how, right?

How to right-click on a chromebook

Should you need to copy text from one document into another, don’t worry. Copying and pasting on a Chromebook works identically to how it works on any other operating system, and you can do it in a couple of ways.

How to Copy Text

The first thing you want to do is open up a document or webpage and highlight the word(s) or line(s) you want to copy. Right-click the selection—either with two fingers on a trackpad, with a mouse, or by pressing Alt while clicking—and then click “Copy.”

How to right-click on a chromebook

Alternatively, instead of using the right-click context menu, you can press Ctrl+C to copy the highlighted text to the clipboard.

Tip: If you want to altogether remove text from a document while copying it to the clipboard, click “Cut” from the context menu or press Ctrl+X instead.

How to Paste Text

Now that you have text copied to the clipboard, open up a document, word processor, or text box (such as Chrome’s address bar) to paste it into place. Click the mouse cursor where you want to paste the text, right-click, and then select “Paste” from the context menu that appears.

How to right-click on a chromebook

If you prefer a keyboard shortcut instead of the context menu, press Ctrl+V to paste the text from the clipboard.

How to Paste Text without Formatting

Chances are if you’re pasting text into a document, you’ll want it to follow the format already in place—especially when copying an entire page. Pasting something that brings along its bold, italicized, and 16pt styling to ruin your document can be frustrating.

However, if you prefer to paste all text as plain text, you can strip away all formatting and do just that. Right-click the area where you want to paste the text, but this time, click “Paste as Plain Text.”

How to right-click on a chromebook

Sometimes, depending on the text field or document where you’re pasting text into, you might have to click “Paste without Formatting” from the context menu.

How to right-click on a chromebook

Alternatively, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+V does the same thing and removes all formatting from the text when it gets pasted into your document.

Access Your Clipboard with an App

Although Chrome OS doesn’t have an accessible clipboard for you to view previously copied items, you can download an app for your Chromebook that does this for you. Clipboard History lets you view, edit, favorite, and copy from a list of recently copied items. Clipboard History works in the background, so it doesn’t need to be open for it to operate.

Once you install and open the app, click the two pages icon to the right of an item to send it to the top of the clipboard. The next time you press Ctrl+V, it will paste into your document.

How to right-click on a chromebook

Click an item to edit the text.

How to right-click on a chromebook

Swipe an item to delete it permanently from the clipboard history.

How to right-click on a chromebook

That’s all there is to it. Copying and pasting on a Chromebook is a simple thing to do, especially as the keyboard shortcuts work almost identically to those for Windows and macOS.

How to right-click on a chromebook

How to right click on a Chromebook is the first problem people face when someone switches to a Chromebook from a Windows computer. So if you are facing the same issue, do not feel alone, we all have been there. In this article, we will talk about all the different methods of right-clicking on a Chromebook with step by step guide.

How to Right Click on a Chromebook

1. Two Finger Tap

If you have ever used an Apple or Windows laptop which does not have separate left and right-click buttons you should already know this process. All you have to do is rather than taping on the object you want right click with one finger, you will use two fingers. The touchpad will interpret it as a right-click and you will find the drop-down menu as expected.

If this is your first time using this technique all you have to focus on is the timing. Your two fingers should tap on the touchpad at the same time and rise also to invoke the process. After a little practice, it will be second nature for you.

2. Right Click with Keyboard

If you are still learning the first method and looking for a more reliable way to right-click instead, you can use your keyboard. To perform the right-clicking action, you have to hold down the ‘Alt’ button and tap on the object. It can also come in handy when you are already typing or your fingers are busy doing something else.

3. Right-Clicking to Move Objects

To move objects on the screen on a Chromebook you have to combine both left and right clicks, it might be confusing at first. First, tap on the object you want to move and hold it. Now with the second finger swipe the way you want to move the object. Here your first finger enables to moving option and the second finger does the main job

4. Have a Mouse? Turn the TouchPad Off

Chromebook allows you to change the touchpad settings easily or shut it off completely from the Settings menu. If you already have a mouse around you should turn the touchpad off. It will also help you if you are using the inbuilt keyboard. On the other hand, you can control the speed of the touchpad.

Conclusion

So these are all the way you can control a right-click action on a Chromebook. One thing to remember, the smoothness and the precision of the movement of your finger will be much better on high-end Chromebooks.

CHROMEBOOKS create attractive alternatives to Apple and Windows laptops. Although it is simple to transition from a traditional laptop to a Chromebook, the right click trick may prove elusive.
