As you can see, there are many ways to search for a file in Windows 10.

Find files on the disk using date searches in Windows Explorer

Sometimes you know you created a document, photo or some other file on your Windows PC, but you cannot remember where you put it. Here’s how to show the most recent files in Explorer..

One way to avoid losing files is to keep them organised and to use folders like the Documents folder, the Pictures folder and so on. However, it becomes complicated when you add in the Public folders and libraries, which are groups of folders. There are also online drives like OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive that may be synced with the computer. I have at least four Documents folders!

Now which one did I save that document in that I created last week?

There are similar problems with the Pictures folders and there are multiple ones and libraries. Photos on your phone are synced to the cloud and then synced back to the PC, so where are the photos you took last week?

We can try to organise documents and photos into subfolders by date, occasion, subject or whatever is most useful, but how do you view the most recently added files?

Explorer can find the latest documents, photos, or other files very easily and it uses a feature you may not have discovered – date searches.

This works in all versions of Windows – 7, 8 and 10. It isn’t specific to any type of file and it can be used to find the most recent files in any folder and its subfolders. It is a useful trick to learn and it makes finding files much easier than browsing in Explorer or searching for filenames, that is if you can remember what file you are looking for.

Search by date in Explorer

Open an Explorer window by clicking the icon in the taskbar.

Go to a folder you want to search, such as C:\Users\YourName to search everywhere you are likely to have saved files, or narrow it down to a specific folder such as your Documents folder, Pictures folder or OneDrive folder.

Click in the search box in the top right corner and type date: The colon triggers a calendar display and you can select any specific day. Below are some predefined date ranges like Today, Yesterday, Last Week and so on. Click one to quickly find files in that date range.

This is a great way to show your most recent files.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

Windows search isn’t fast when the whole disk is being searched, so give it a minute or two. When it has finished, go to Explorer’s View tab and select your favourite view.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

Here I selected Details view and clicked the Date modified column header to sort by date (click again to flip the sort by ascending or descending values).

You can go ahead and double click a file to open it, but there is a Folder column in Details view that shows the folder where each file is stored. Right click a file and select Open file location on the menu that is displayed, or select a file, select the Search tab and click Open file location.

Save your searches

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

Also on the Search tab is Save search. Click this and choose a place to save the search. It creates a shortcut and you could save a search for last week’s files as a shortcut on the desktop. Double click it and all your recent files are displayed.

Search a range of dates in Explorer

So far we have seen how to search for predefined date ranges, but what if you know you saved a file somewhere around the middle of last month, but you don’t know exactly which day. One option would be to select Last month on the calendar, but that might return too many files. There is a way to search a range of dates.

Here is a much more complicated search:

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

  1. Go to the folder to search, like OneDrive or C:\Users\YourName
  2. Click in the search box
  3. Type date:
  4. Click the first date in the calendar and Shift+click the second
  5. Click in the search box again
  6. Type a space followed by *.docx

I selected a date range to narrow the search results to the 10th – 20th July and narrowed it further by adding *.docx so only Word documents between these dates were displayed.

Searching for files by date ranges is very easy in Windows and you can save your favourite ones so they can be run with a click of the mouse. Add a file extension to a date search and it filters the results and makes it even easier to track down lost files.

I use AIX via telnet here at work, and I’d like to know how to find files in a specific folder between a date range. For example: I want to find all files in folder X that were created between 01-Aug-13 and 31-Aug-13.

  • The touch trick (where you create two empty files to use the -newer option) does not work for me, once the user roles that I have on the server does not allow me to create files.
  • I need to find between specific dates, not days (like: files that were created more than 30 days ago, etc. )

If you use GNU find , since version 4.3.3 you can do:

It will accept any date string accepted by GNU date -d .

You can change the c in -newerct to any of a , B , c , or m for looking at atime/birth/ctime/mtime.

Another example – list files modified between 17:30 and 22:00 on Nov 6 2017:

Use stat to get the creation time. You can compare the time in the format YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS lexicographically.

This work on Linux with modification time, creation time is not supported. On AIX, the -c option might not be supported, but you should be able to get the information anyway, using grep if nothing else works.

You can use the following commands to list files between 2 specific dates:

Script oldfiles

I’ve tried to answer this question in a more complete way, and I ended up creating a complete script with options to help you understand the find command.

The script oldfiles is in this repository

To “create” a new find command you run it with the option -n (dry-run), and it will print to you the correct find command you need to use.

Of course, if you omit the -n it will just run, no need to retype the find command.

Usage:

  • Where the options are classified in the following groups:
    • Help & Info:

-h, –help : Show this help.
-V, –version : Show version.
-v, –verbose : Turn verbose mode on (cumulative).
-n, –dry-run : Do not run, just explain how to create a “find” command

  • Time type (access/use, modification time or changed status):

-a or -u : access (use) time
-m or -t : modification time (default)
-c : inode status change

  • Time range (where N is a positive integer):

-i N : minutes (default, with N equal 1 min)
-d N : days
-o N : months
-y N : years
-g N : N is a DATE (example: “2017-07-06 22:17:15”)

  • Tests:

-p “pat” : optional pattern to match (example: -p “*.c” to find c files) (default -p “*”)
-\> : file is newer than given range, ie, time modified after it.
– -n the program will run the find command itself and save you the trouble.

I hope this helps everyone finally learn this options.

The LS output:

You will also notice that the ls option ls OPT changes to match the type of time you choose.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

‘find’ is a very powerful Linux command which provides various options for searching files based on different criteria. One of these options allows users to search for files based on the modification/access/creation time of the file. In Windows, we don’t have such powerful command. But we do have a command to search for files based on the file modification time. It can’t be used to find files based on file creation/access time. Still something is better than nothing. 😐 Below you can find how to use this command.

1. Find files modified in the last 7 days

First we need to get the the date for current day – 7 days and use it in the below command.

For example, if today’s date is Jan 11th 2015, if we need to get the files modified in the last 7 days, you can use the below command.

This command search for files created in the folder(specified with /P) in the last 7 days. Specifying /S makes it search for such files recursively in all subfolders.

Please note that /D +(number of days) is practically not useful. This option says to search for the files modified after n days from today’s date.

If there are no files meeting the condition, the command prints the following message.

2. Find files that were last modified 1 month back

3. Find files based on modification date

To find files modified after 1st August 2013, we can run the below command

To find files modified before 20th August 2013:

Execute commands on the files selected

forfiles has an equivalent functionality similar to -exec option with linux find command. This can be used to run commands on the files set returned by the command.

The syntax of the command is

4: Move files to another folder based on modification time

Let’s say we want to move the files which are not modified 3 days ago to another folder(D:\archiveDir). The command for this would be as below

This command looks processes files in subfolders also, ‘/S’ can be removed to perform this only for the files in the current folder.

5: Delete files in the current folder which were updated one month ago

Be cautious while running these commands, verify that you are deleting the right set of files, otherwise the data lost may not be recoverable. Use these commands at your own risk.
To remove files from subfolders also:

How to find files that are created on the same day?

for /F “tokens=2” %i in (‘date /t’) do dir /T:C | findstr /C:%i /B
This command gets the list of all the files from the current folder that are created on the same day. You do not need to specify the date, the command automatically picks the current date.

You can add /s option to dir command to search in sub directories also. However, the file names will not have full path names, they are printed folder by folder. So you can make out which folder a file belongs to.

I can not get the forfiles to work for dates modified within # of days (your example: forfiles /P directory /S /D +30)

Here is what i have:
forfiles /P C:\DfsRoots\CopyFolders\testdelete /s /m *.* /d +30 /c “cmd /c XCOPY @file c:\DfsRoots\CopyFolders\move”

It works when i put “-30” for equal to and older than 30 days but not what i have above. any ideas? My only thought was that “+30” is set to a future modified date, which i would assume is rare. Even when i remove my XCOPY cmd it errors out and says there are no files specified.

Hello Sean, you were correct. /D +n option is not making any sense.
I have updated the post reflecting this.

Is it possible to move the files with the directory structure intact?

Has anyone had a solution for this question? I have the exact same question but have no idea how old this post is or if it is still alive.

Any help is much appreciated!

How to find last modified file in a directory

4: Move files to another folder based on modification time

=> folder path should be xxxxxxxxxx D:\archiveDir”

Is there a way i can compare file modified time with system time and perform any operation based on it . Lets say, if file modified time is less then system date by 20 minutes, file should be copied to some location.

Your response will be highly appreciated.

this is a typo:
forfiles /S /D -3 /C “cmd /c move @file D;\archiveDir”

should be:
forfiles /S /D -3 /C “cmd /c move @file D:\archiveDir”

otherwise users will get invalid syntax errors.

If you want to deal with file creation/access time, you can do it in Powershell with something like:

$limit = (Get-Date).AddDays(-30)
Get-ChildItem -Path $path -Recurse | Where-Object < !$_.PSIsContainer -and $_.lastAccessTime -lt $limit >| Remove-Item -Force

Hi, I was able to load files according to Modified date using a command below,
‘z: & forfiles /m *.jpg /s /d 07/16/2015 /c “cmd /c echo @fdate @ftime @path”‘

But I wanna know how to load files according to Created date. Any help would be very appreciated.

I have folder it contained 30 date data and i will delete 15 dates data via command prompt.

Please suggest the commands

I need to delete the file based on another file. for example. get the date of one file and delete all files in the directory except the main file before that date time. For example.

How can I list recursively all files that were changed between 22.12.2011 and 24.12.2011?

6 Answers 6

Using Gilles’ solution and after reading the man find(1) again I found a more simple solution. The best option is the -newerXY. The m and t flags can be used.

So the solution is

The lower bound in inclusive, and upper bound is exclusive, so I added 1 day to it! And it is recursive. It works well on find v4.5.9.

Generally speaking, when you’re looking for files in a directory and its subdirectories recursively, use find .

The easiest way to specify a date range with find is to create files at the boundaries of the range and use the -newer predicate.

In addition to the answers already given, note that you can directly specify your dates:

if you additionally want to specify the time.

Assuming you don’t need precision to the seconds, this should work.

find can take an ISO formatted datetime, so for a server on UTC for instance, you could specify an offset of a number of hours from wherever you are. This also takes care of having to add a day since you’re comparing time too:

Please note that the question marked as duplicate, and therefore is restricted from answering it directly, is why I’m posting into here. This answer is for answering the question “need to move files to different folder based on the creation date [duplicate]”

The answers are reasonable but there were some limitations with a purely find command. I wrote this shell script to go through a directory with so many files in it the filesystem was gagging on the metadata trying to perform an ls. Additionally some *nix systems will barf a too many arguments error with running ls.

The find command is very powerful and I started with the methods that are listed but I had so many years of data throughout that directory that I had to pass over all the files repeatedly. This produces a lot of needless passed over each file. I tried doing one screen per year and running multiple finds but this resulted in a lot of errors from each find and files would go missing when one of the finds moved it.

My shell script moves a file to the destination directory, with a 4 digit year and a 2 digit month. It can easily be expanded to a 2 digit day by uncommenting a couple lines and commenting out their counterparts. I believe it’s more efficient because it was perform the moves in one pass of find so multiple find commands and passes over the directory are unneeded.

Once saved and made executable you may call this script with find like the following.

You don’t need to worry about setting the newermt option for find as all find is providing is a single execution per file found and the script makes all the decisions.

Keep in mind that if you don’t select -type f it will move directories around and that will likely cause issues. You could also use -type d if you’re looking to move just directories. Not setting the type will almost certainly produce unwanted behaviour.

Remember that this script was tailoured to my needs. You may want to simply use my construct as inspiration for a better suited for your needs script. Thank you!

Considerations: The efficiency of the command can be GREATLY improved by allowing an unlimited number of arguments to pass through the script. This is actually relatively easy if you pass over the [email protected] variable. Extending the functionality of this would allow us to use find’s -exec + function or leverage xargs, for example. I may quickly implement that and improve my own answer but this is a start.

Since this was a one-shot script session there are probably many improvements that can be made. Good luck!

The default History page on Google Chrome provides quite information, yet it missing something important — you can’t jump into a specific data there.

In order to sort Chrome history by date, you need to be creative!

Luckily, there are several options you could try. In this guide, I will show you some of the best options to sort Chrome history by date easily.

#1 Use Google My Activity to see Chrome history by date

Google My Activity is a tool that tracks your activity when using Google’s product. As long as you logged in to your Google account, then this tool would be useful for both mobile and desktop devices.

1. Go to Google My Activity and click Filter by date & product. You may also put some query there.

#2 Try using Chrome Better History extension

Chrome Better History is an 82KB extension that allows you to sort Google Chrome’s history by date. This extension basically replaces the default history page (Ctrl+H) with its own configuration where you can jump into a certain date easily.

The beauty of this extension is it doesn’t act as a spyware as the extension itself was an open-source project. However, you probably won’t be pleased by its interface that looks quite old — a similar style from Chrome in 2012.

#3 History Trends can see history from the past 100 days

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

History Trends serve a purpose as a productivity tracking tool, but it also comes with a “time-machine” feature where you can read your browser history data from the past 100 days from today.

To get the data, click on the extension’s icon, on the Top 10 Busiest Days click View Top 100. From there, you can select the available dates and see your history on that day.

Alright, that’s 3 different ways to sort Chrome history by date. I would like to use Google My Activity services as the main option because it’s really accurate, covering all of your connected devices, and packed nicely by Google unless you decide to remove them.

If you have a problem or suggestion about this guide, let me know in the comment section below. I will reply to your feedback as soon as possible.

A single-click Gmail jump to date function does not exist in Gmail, but there are pretty good and useful options available if you need to search emails within a certain date range or a specific date in your Gmail account. In this article I’m going to show you how to search by date in Gmail.

You’ve probably already used the Gmail search function to search for specific words or correspondents in your inbox, but there’s more to the search capabilities in Gmail than first meets the eye.

Try it now and improve your search results.

Get Access to Gmail Jump to Date and Other Advanced Search Options

In order to perform a Gmail jump to date type of search, we need to take another look at the Gmail search field, and in particular the little dropdown arrow on the right hand side of the field.

If you click that arrow, a whole new plethora of options will appear which will give you access to a ton more advanced search options than just the plain search field.

The image below shows just how much advanced search options are available to be able to comb through your emails when looking for anything specific. You can even search for messages that don’t contain a specific word. For the Gmail jump to date type of search, we’ll be working with the “Date within” option of the advanced search window.

Remark: in the image above you can also see that Gmail has automatically populated the search window with “after” and “before” my Gmail date range search. Indeed, if you are familiar with the syntax you can also directly enter the search command in the search box instead of working with the advanced Gmail search window. Obviously, this may not be very helpful for people who are not that technical as this is even mentioned in Google’s own Gmail support page.

If you are done searching and you want to go back to your normal list of messages, simply click your Gmail inbox again and you’ll be back to normal.

Of course you can play around with other Gmail search options like searching for messages with attachments or even only messages with attachments of a certain size, which can come in very handy when your Google account storage is getting full. You can then filter out the messages with the largest attachments and decide whether or not you need to keep them.

Oftentimes, messages with large attachments are forgotten in people’s mailboxes, even if they don’t have to be kept forever. Think for instance about messages with funny videos attached, which can be fun to cheer up your day but don’t necessarily have to be kept in your mailbox forever.

As you can see, it’s pretty easy to perform a Gmail jump to date search query with Gmail’s advanced search options and on top of that you also get access to a ton of other search possibilities.

There’s one “feature” in Windows 8 and 10 that’s been really annoying me lately: sorting by date. When you select Sort by → Date in view options of a folder with a lot of files, the operation can take several minutes to complete!

The reason is that this “Date” is not the date of creation or modification of the files. Instead, Explorer tries to open every single media file (such as JPEG, DOC, etc.) and extract the original date of creation from it (so, if someone took a picture in 2005, uploaded it to the internet, and you downloaded it a minute ago, it would show up near the end of a list sorted by “Date”).

I can’t think of anyone who would want the default Sort by Date function to behave this way. Fortunately, it is easy way to change it. Simply click on the “Choose columns…” option in the sorting menu (or on “More…” if you got to the menu via a right mouse click):

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

In the dialog that appears, uncheck “Date” (so that it does not appear any more) and check “Date modified” (or “Date created”, if you prefer). Now, when you click on Sort by → Date modified, you will get the results instantly.

“I’m wondering if there is data recovery software that supports recovering deleted files by time. So many third-party data recovery tools let customers find the files by file types, which is troublesome and time-consuming.”

Why Do You Need to Recover Deleted Files by Date/Time

Data recovery software can generally find thousands of files after scanning a disk or partition. However, the files or folders you want to recover might be a small portion of them. That’s why filters are so important to filter files in line with the date/period modified. With filters or the search feature, you can locate a specific file or folder that you want to retrieve within seconds instead of finding the item from the long list of the scanning result.

Some users may find it helpful to recover deleted files by file type, file name, or file extension, while others may need to retrieve lost data by date and time. No matter which method you prefer, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can do all these things for you.

Wise Data Recovery Software – EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard

With the reliable hard drive recovery softwareВ – EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, by filtering settings, you canВ recover deleted, lost, or formatted files on multiple devices, including internal/external hard drive, USB flash drive, memory card, camcorder, and other Windows-compatible storage devices. More specifically speaking, you can:

  • Recover lost data by category:В All Files, Recent Files, Lost Files, Recycle Bin Files, Pictures, Documents, Videos, Audio, and Emails
  • Recover files via advanced filter: File Status (Deleted/Existing Files), Specific File Type (Word/PPT/Excel/PDF/Others), Date Modified (a specific period or custom time), File Size, and Initial Letter or File Name.
  • Search for a specific file or folder by full name, part of the name, or extension.В

Download and read on to see how to execute data recovery by date and time with EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard.

As you can see, with the wiseВ data recovery software from EaseUS, you can recover files not only by the date or time you delete the items but also by other specifics. Read on to follow the three-step file recovery process to get back your precious files.

How to Recover Deleted or Lost Files By Date/Time

To extract the files you deleted on a precise day to period, click “Filter” > “Advanced Filter” to choose an exact period or set a custom one in step 2. Let’s get started.В

Step 1. Choose the exact file location and then click the “Scan” button to continue.

The filter function is small but helpful to shorten the time you spend on finding the target files or folders and allows you to recover files from a specific date. Hope it helps you, too.

Windows Built-in tool – Recover Lost Files by Date/Time from the Previous Version

Windows has a free backup and restore tool to restore files you accidentally deleted, which help you to restore previous versions. But this method is not always useful for file restoration, because the Restore Previous Versions function works only if you have used the File History to back up your files. Otherwise, it will show the error “There are no previous versions available.”

How to Restore Files by Date/Time

In Windows 10/8/8.1/7:

1. Move to the folder containing the files you wish to recover.

2. Right-click on the folder and select Properties.

3. Click on the Previous Versions tab.В

4. Select the appropriate folder from which to recover the file using the Date modified, and click Open.

5. Copy the files to be recovered to a new location.

Or you can input Control Panel on the search box. Control Panel > File History > Restore Personal Files > Click Preview and choose the selected files > Click Restore button to restore it to the origin version.

Unfortunately, if you have not backed up the files in advance, then the Previous Version comes up empty more often or not. So you still have another reliable choice by recovering deleted files with data recovery software – EaseUS Data Recovery.

The Bottom Line

Data loss can hardly be avoided due to human error, hard drive corruption, power outage, computer malfunction, virus attack, etc. Thanks to third-party data recovery software, we escape from various types of data loss disasters on a hard drive, flash drive, memory card, camera, phone, music player, and so on. To eliminate the chance of complete data loss, both backing up important data elsewhere and equipping the computer with a data recovery tool are necessary. Be prudent when you delete items and be quick when you rescue the files.

I have about 4 years of data and new data are continuing to add every day. I’m looking to back up the most recent two years of data AND delete old backup data as time progresses. Is there a backup software that can do this?

You can do that with stuff like tar no problem. Is this a file server?

Yes it’s a windows file server.

Try to use 7zip with script that can compress your files almost half of the actual file size ;). Also in your script you can define which files to compress base on your requirements. It can be in the range of years, with days or months. A lot of compressed file type to choose here, even encrypting it with a password.

Can 7zip copy to a CIFS location on a NAS?

What is your eventual goal ? The solutions or recommendations does not seem to match your topic nor the contents ?

Your question was to know if there are backup software that runs on Windows server to backup files in a folder (or root folder) based on file dates not older than 730 days (365 x2) ?

Then if the server crash. at least you can recover files from 1st Aug 2015 (approx 2 years ago).

Zipping is not backup. it is just compressing files, but it can be problematic if you have 100,000s of files within a zip file or may not help much if most of the large files are pictures or video.

Then you may have a server performance issue if users start accessing the super-large zip files to look for files etc.

What I did for my file servers was

  1. Create root folders based on year.
    • 2017_User_files (current folder, search and delete files created before 1/1/2017)
    • 2016_User_files (current folder, search and delete files created before 1/1/2016 & after 1/1/2017)
    • 2015_User_files (current folder, search and delete files created before 1/1/2015 & after 1/1/2016)
    • 2014_User_files (current folder, search and delete files created before after 1/1/2015)

Did you have that experience when you worked on a document for some time, but do not remember exactly its name and where you saved it? I’m sure you did. So today we decided to help you locating your lost documents in the quickest possible way: in this case – searching by date.

Windows search is not very friendly to those who want to use its advanced features. To access search features you need to open Windows Explorer first (not Internet Explorer). Then choose the folder or the whole drive(s) where you think your file is located and click on the search field at the top right of the Explorer window.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

Lain kali, pencarian Anda hanya satu klik.

This tutorial explains how to find files created or modified between specific date. If you are looking for methods to find specific files created or modified between any specific date/time, then this tutorial is surely going to help you.

Here I will demonstrate 5 methods of finding files created or modified between specific dates. I will use 2 native features of Windows and 3 free software for demonstrating the same. The two native feature of Windows are: Search Index in File Explorer and Date Modified Option in File Explorer. The 3 software I will use here are: SysTools NTFS Log Analyzer, ScanDir, and Locate32.

Lets see how these methods actually work.

How To Find Files Created Between Specific Date range with Search Index In File Explorer:

If you are simply looking to locate all the files of any directory that were created or modified between a certain date, then you just need to open File Explorer and then locate the directory you want to scan. Then you need to locate the Search Index on the top right side of the File Explorer window. Here, you need to to enter the dates between which you want to see the files created or modified. The dates are needed to be entered in a specific format, that is “date:MM/DD/YY .. MM/DD/YY”. You can also use “modified” or “Datecreated” instead of date in the given format.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

As soon as you enter the dates in right format, all the files of that directory which were created or modified between those dates will appear in the File Explorer.

This process allows to search files between any specific dates, however, you can’t search for such files between specific time.

Use Date Modified Option In File Explorer to Find Files Created Between Specific Date and Time:

Date Modified option under which you are able to see the Creation date or Modification date of all the files listed in that directory can also be used to filter files between specific date. For that you need to click on Dropdown symbol next to Date Modified option. Then a small calendar window appear, where you can directly click on any date and drag the mouse till the date you want to extend the filter.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

As you select the date range, all the files that fall between that date range are automatically shown in the File Explorer. Here also, files within a time range can’t be searched, only files within a date range can be viewed.

Search Files Created or Modified between Specific Date with SysTools NTFS LOG Analyzer:

SysTools NTFS Log Analyzer is a free software to search, scan, and analyze the whole activity log of a NTFS based device. However, it can also be used to search files that were created or modified within a specific date range. How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

It has 4 check-boxes to further filter the search, they are:

  • All: This checkbox when selected shows all the files between the given date range.
  • Created: This checkbox is for viewing all the files created between the chosen date range.
  • Renamed: All the files that were renamed between the given date range are shown after choosing this checkbox.
  • Deleted: You can see all the files that were deleted within the given date range by selecting this checkbox.

You can select any of the above shown check-boxes according to your need and the result instantly appears on its interface. You also get to export these logs as a CSV file to your PC.

This software also only searches for files within a certain date range, not within a certain time range.

How to Use ScanDir To Scan Files Created/Modified between Specific Date/Time:

As the name suggests, ScanDir is another free Software for Windows that is used to scan directories. It provides a range of selection criteria: File Name, File Size, File Date, File Types, and Path.

How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

For simply viewing all the files created and Modified within a certain date range, you need to first select the directory and then click on Modify or Created tab on the interface and then fill the date range. You can also choose to fill the time range as well if you want it to precisely show you the files between the time range between the chosen date. Once you have entered both date and time, you just need to click on Scan, and the results are shown within a few seconds on the interface. They are listed separately as Items, Files, and Logs.

You can also save these list on your PC and even print them directly from the software.

How to Use Locate32 To Find Files created between Specific date or Time:How to search for files from a certain date range in windows 8 and 10

Locate32 is another freeware to locate files from the selected directories by File name, File Extensions, File Size, and File Date. For searching files between a certain date range with this software, you need to first select the location under Name & Location tab on the interface. Then you need to head over to the second tab named Size and Date and select the Files Newer Than and Files Older Than check-boxes and then fill the date range. After that you need to Choose Modified, Created or Last Accessed from the dropdown according to your need and the results are automatically shown below them. You can also save the results as TXT file on the PC.

Verdict:

All the above mentioned methods are clearly very capable of searching created or modified files within a certain date range. However, I liked ScanDir more as it also allows you to search precisely to the exact time between each date.

Late today, the U.S. Department of Justice released a transcript of the direct testimony of AOL senior vice president David Colburn in anticipation of his appearance in court tomorrow for cross examination by Microsoft. All of the major witnesses in the antitrust case against the software supergiant were recorded earlier so that the trial could move more swiftly. Colburn is sure to get the same treatment as Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale, who finally completed his grueling questioning today.

In the testimony, Colburn says that Microsoft gave it a mob-like offer it could not refuse: a prime piece of real estate on the Windows desktop in return for licensing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer instead of Netscape Navigator. It was a no-brainer, he said, despite the fact that AOL and Microsoft were essentially enemies.

“AOL would not have been willing to negotiate a browser license with Microsoft had Microsoft not indicated a willingness to bundle and to promote the AOL client software in some form with Windows,” he said.

In October 1996, AOL and Microsoft entered into an agreement where Microsoft would pay the online service 25 cents for every user it converted from Netscape to IE. The deal also included a provisional agreement that Microsoft would give AOL $600,000 if “a substantial portion of \[AOL’s\] installed base converted to Internet Explorer by a certain date.”

Microsoft told Colburn that it had “no limitations” on the amount of money it could spend to gain marketshare for IE.

In other trial news, Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale said that he was told by Apple CFO Fred Anderson that Microsoft threatened to stop making the Mac version of Office unless Apple agreed to use Internet Explorer as its default Web browser. Anderson had called Barksdale personally in August 1997 to explain the situation and apologize. The call came just after the announcement that Microsoft had agreed to invest $150 million in Apple
