While working on my DD-WRT project for my NetGear R7000 router, I ran some tests to see what the ideal connection setup for my router would be.

During the testing you’d typically want to see the speed of your WiFi connection, possibly including noise, RSSI, channel, country code, used frequency, etc. and initially it can be a bit daunting where to find this information. But … surprise: this info is readily available on your Mac, no extra software is needed, you just need to know where it’s hidden …

Therefor in this article 4 methods to figure this out on your Mac, without the need to install specific software for the task.

Determining WiFi speed on your Mac

Below I’ll show you 4 methods to determine some of the characteristics of your current WiFi connection.
For this we will use build-in tools that come with your MacOS X.

I highly recommend the first method , since it’s easy to access, fast and provides a lot of good information.

Method 1: Through the WiFi icon in the Menu Bar

To examine the speed of your WiFi connection, you can use the WiFi icon in the menu bar of your Mac.
Simply clicking it though will not provide you this information. You’ll have the press the OPTION (or ALT) key and keep it pressed while clicking the WiFi icon .

When you do so, a list will be presented with additional data:

  • WiFi network name (SSID)
  • IP Address of your computer
  • IP Address of the router or modem
  • If Internet is reachable
  • What type of security is used
  • BSSID
  • Channel
  • Country Code (each country has it’s own set of regulations)
  • RSSI (Received signal strength indication)
  • Noise (signal disruption)
  • TX Rate (tansmission speed)
  • PHY Mode (Radio mode)
  • MCS Index (index number for modulation and coding the signal)

Method 2: System Information Report

This method is a little bit more limited, yet provides good info.

Go to the icon in the upper left corner of your screen, select “ About this Mac ” “ System Report… “.

Method 3: Network Utility

Network Utility is a little harder, as it seems to have the habit of changing location with each MacOS X version.

The easiest way to find Network Utility is through Spotlight.

Open Spotlight , type “ Network Utility “, and press ENTER .

Select under the “ Info ” tab, select your WiFi device from the dropdown list, and you’ll see your speed under “ Link Speed “.

Note: Sometimes Network Utility does not show your WiFi connection. Close the application and try again.

Method 4: Terminal (Command Line)

This is more for those folks that prefer the Terminal, and honestly, it took me a while to find this one.

Open a Terminal ( Applications Utilities Terminal ) and type:

The output should show something like this, where you see “lastTXRate” and “maxRate” indicating speed values for your WiFi.

In Terminal you could create a shortcut for this, and this can be done in 2 ways.
One is creating and alias (recommended), and the other by creating a symbolic link.

Either solution allows you to simply type “airport” on Terminal without having to type the full path.

Ever since I’ve been using my new MacBook Air, I’ve been befuddled by how to do some of the simplest tasks in Mac OS X that I would normally do from my Windows laptop—like show the connection speed for the current Wi-Fi network. So am I using 802.11ac or not?

Normally, on my Windows 7 laptop, all I’d have to do is hover over the icon, or pop up the list—you can even go into the network details and see just about every piece of data about the network, all from the system tray. Here’s how to see your current connection information on your Mac.

Using Option-Click

As pointed out by anon in the comments, you can simply hold down the Option key while clicking on the menu bar icon for your Airport, and it will show you the extended information in the popup display.

Using the Network Utility

You can use the Network Utility by using Cmd+Space to pull up the Spotlight search box and typing it in, or you can navigate through your Applications -> Utilities folder to find it.

Once you’re there, you can see the current connection speed by looking at the Link Speed, which will show the actual data rate that you’re using. This rate will change as you move around your house, so if you’re far away from the router, the rate will change, and if you’re closer, it will get higher.

Once you’re there, navigate down to Network -> Wi-Fi or Network -> Airport depending on how old your MacBook and version of OS X might be, and you’ll see the current connection over on the right. Using the Network Utility

If you tend to use this command-line statement more often, please consider making a symbolic link, so you can simply type “airport” on the command line without having to type the full path .

When having Wi-Fi connection problems, most of us instinctively look at the bars on our computer or phone screen to see how strong our Wi-Fi connection is. How to interpret your network’s signal strength

Decibels are expressed as negative numbers, and the closer to zero the number, the stronger the signal. In other words, the larger the absolute value, the weaker the network connection. For example, -80 dBm is a much weaker connection than -30 dBm.

In addition, signal strength isn’t linear; it’s logarithmic, which means that every 3 dBm change represents a halving or doubling of the strength of the signal. Moreover, a 10 dBm change adds up to ten times more or less strength.

Here are some guidelines for assessing your signal strength:

  • -30 dBm. This is the maximum signal strength you could achieve, and it probably means you are within a couple feet of the Wi-Fi router.
  • -50 dBm. Anything from -30 dBm to -50 dBm is excellent and is often about as high as you can get.
  • -67 dBm. This is the lowest value that will deliver acceptable results for most online services.
  • -80 dBm. This is the lowest possible value that will make a connection between the router and computer, but it’s too weak to be useful for any online service.

How to improve your Wi-Fi signal

If your Wi-Fi signal is weak, there are a lot of possible causes, and your troubleshooting options are extensive. Some of the simple fixes include:

  • Make sure your Wi-Fi router is positioned in a central place in your home or office.
  • Ensure the router’s antennae are positioned optimally.
  • Move your Wi-Fi transmission to a different, less-crowded channel.

How to Easily Test Internet Connection Speed on Mac

Ready to see test your internet speed? Here’s all you need to do:

  1. Open any web browser on the Mac, like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Epic, Edge
  2. Go to https://fast.com and let the page load, it immediately loads a speed test into the web browser
  3. Wait a few moments to get your reported internet connection speed

By default the speed test will show only download speeds, but if you click on “Show More Info” at the bottom of the results the browser will run a second speed test to check internet connection latency and upload speed too.

All of this data can be helpful for troubleshooting and planning what type of internet services and features you may use or have available.

Many things can impact your internet connection speed, including internet service provider, service quality, network quality, wi-fi routers, wi-fi interference, distance from wi-fi routers, other network activity, and much more.

High performing internet providers and services in major metro areas should be ultra fast and highly stable, with very high speeds that allow for large downloads and uploads and flawless 4k streaming on multiple devices in the same household.

But as you can see in the screenshots here, the internet connection currently being tested is quite slow in compared to a high speed connection you’d find in a major city. Nonetheless the slow speed shown is a fairly typical internet connection speed for semi-rural and rural areas of America even barely outside of major metro areas (in this case, the slow internet service shown is the top internet offering available in a smaller town just outside of a major US city, hooray for infrastructure?), and also fairly typical of what sort of internet connection speed you might find in undeveloped and developing parts of the world, whether as a resident or traveler. Not everyone has access to the super fast broadband services available in major global cities and suburbs! This is something important to keep in mind as developers, who are often concentrated in major metro areas with superior internet service, though they can use features to simulate slower internet connections if they’re interested in doing so.

This speed test service is provided free (by Netflix) and can help to determine what your internet connection speed is and requirements might be for using various streaming services, cloud services, and other stuff that requires internet connections.

For example, with a slow internet speed like the one shown, doing large iCloud backups is a huge challenge and can take weeks to upload or download. Likewise, using iCloud Photos may not be ideal on this type of internet connection because the speed is too slow to handle a large photo library syncing across devices. Even some network games like Fortnite or Warcraft may have latency issues due to the connection speed, making them challenging to play.

Note that your active internet connection is not going to be the same as the wi-fi connection link speed shown in Network Utility, which is more representative of a maximum possible speed rather than the actual connection speed.

Since macOS Monterey was released, Apple has included a tool to check the quality of your Mac’s internet connection without having to rely on benchmarks from third-party websites.

Apple has a support document that helpfully explains what these classifications mean:

  • Low: If any device on the same network is, for example, downloading a movie or backing up photos to iCloud, the connection in some apps or services might be unreliable, like during FaceTime video calls or gaming.
  • Medium: When multiple devices or apps are sharing the network, you might see momentary pauses or freezes, like during FaceTime audio or video calls.
  • High: Regardless of the number of devices and apps sharing the network, apps and services should maintain good connection.

If you’re trying to troubleshoot a poor internet connect, this tool can be especially useful as a repeatable test when experimenting with different configuration settings and comparing the effects.

Once you have launched it, select your wireless network from the drop-down menu (if it’s not already selected) and check the value next to “Link Speed“.

If you are a fan or writing command lines instead of clicking around on your Mac and want more accurate information about your WiFi network, then you might want to know that you can use Terminal to achieve this goal. In order to do that, simply launch it (again, you can perform a Spotlight search or go to “Applications” -> “Utilities”) and write the following command:

Using online tools

Finally, there are various online tools you can use in order to determine the speed of your WiFi link. Utilities such as Speedtest.net, TestMy.net Broadband Internet Speed Test or Xfinity Speed Test offer some viable choices for finding out the download and upload speeds of your network connection. A nice thing about these tools is that most of them display the speed in Mb/s, so you won’t have to perform the conversion from Mbit/s.

You have your laptop connected to a Wi-Fi network with full bars. That’s great. It’s not the bars that matter though, but the actual speed of that connection. Here’s a quick way to find how fast your computer’s current Wi-Fi connection is and other information about that connection.

On a Mac, hold the Option key then click on the Wi-Fi icon at the top right area on the screen. A menu will appear: Under the current Wi-Fi network it shows a host of information about the current connection, including the IP addresses, MAC address, the Wi-Fi standard and the connection speed, which is shown as Tx Rate.

On a Windows computer, it’s a bit more involved but still easy. First right-click on the Wi-Fi icon at the lower right corner area of the screen, then click on Open Network and Sharing Center.

Next, click on the Wi-Fi connection, which will open up the status window that shows you the current connection speed among other things. And then you can click on Details to find out about the IP address and other info.

The speed is generally shown in megabits per second. The speed tends to fluctuate, ranging from 20Mbps 450Mbps if the computer is connected to a wireless n (802.11n) network, and can get as high as 1,300Mbps for an 802.11ac network. However, the most important thing is if this number is higher than your broadband download speed, then you’re likely getting the full internet speed on the computer. If it’s lower, then it’s definitely your Wi-Fi that’s slowing down your connection to the internet.

You can use the Network Utility by using Cmd+Space to pull up the Spotlight search box and typing it in, or you can navigate through your Applications -> Utilities folder to find it.

1. Place your router in an open spot. Because Wi-Fi is just that—wireless—its connection speed is affected by distance, obstacles (such as walls, floors, and ceilings), electronic interference, and the number of users on the network. All these things contribute to the slow-down of Wi-Fi connection speed.
For the best signal, put the wireless router out in the open on the main floor of your house, away from walls and obstructions. Ideally, you’ll want to position it off the floor, above the furniture. Keep it away from other electronics that might cause interference, like microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones. You might also try pointing the antennas perpendicularly, with one horizontally and one vertically.

Want to know where the wireless dead spots are around your house? Try using a mobile app, like CloudCheck*, to test for them. It can also help you identify where the signal strength is best, so you can find a good spot for your router. Think of it as Wi-Fi feng shui for your wireless router.

2. Use current Wi-Fi technologies. Technologies change rapidly, and one of the best ways to speed up your wireless network is to use the latest hardware. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the biggest leap in wireless technology in over a decade, enabling faster speeds 2 , lower latency 3 , and greater capacity 4 in PCs, mobile phones, and routers and gateways for the home. Older, lower performance technologies like Wireless-N (802.11n) and Wireless-AC (802.11ac) are still in most mobile and IoT devices, while other technologies are nearly obsolete.
Newer Wireless-AC routers have data transfer speeds up to three times faster than older Wireless-B/G/N models, and they offer “dual-band” functionally so you can free up channels for older wireless devices to access.

New Wi-Fi 6 routers have data transfer speeds nearly 3x faster2 than standard Wi-Fi 5 solutions, and they offer “dual-band” functionally so you can free up channels for older wireless devices to access.

And, of course, you’ll want to select the latest Wi-Fi with WPA and secure your Wi-Fi network with a password so your neighbors can’t stream their movies on your wireless connection.

3. Limit devices and optimize settings. Playing online games, conducting video chats, and streaming movies and videos take up a lot of bandwidth, and they can slow down Internet speed and access for everyone connected to that Wi-Fi network. Some routers have a Quality of Service (QoS) setting that lets you control which apps have priority access to the Internet bandwidth. For example, you may want to prioritize video calls if you have a lot of meetings, and deprioritize file downloads from the cloud. You can always get your files later, but you don’t want to drop a call with an important client or family member.

You’ll also want to make sure that your wireless router has the latest updates to its firmware and drivers. While many newer routers have a built-in update process, you may need to access your router’s settings to manually start an update or visit your device manufacturer’s website for bug fixes.

You can also fine-tune the channel selection on your router. By default, many wireless routers are set to run on channel 6. This means that your neighbors’ routers might also be running on channel 6, causing congestion on that channel because of the number of devices connected to it. Using a tool like Wi-Fi Analyzer* or Wi-Fi Scanner* can help you identify router channels with more bandwidth giving you improved Internet speed.

If your router is relatively new, it should be able to switch between two radio frequencies—2.4 GHz (the older standard) and 5 GHz (the newer standard). Smart wireless routers can choose the best frequency for you and your environment. Each frequency has multiple channels: 14 at 2.4 GHz and 30 at 5GHz. So, if your router has the capability to automatically switch between frequencies, it can choose among 44 channels. You can check your wireless router settings to see if it is auto-switching between channels and frequencies for the optimal setting.

How to Test WiFi Speed on Mac?

Your maximum download and upload speed are determined by three main factors: the performance of your wireless adapter, which is built into your Mac computer, the performance of your wireless router, and your internet connection.

To check what is the maximum transmission speed of your wireless adapter, open Spotlight and type “Network Utility.” Press Enter to confirm your input and go to the Info tab in the Network Utility window. You should see a drop-down menu with your network interface. Checking your wi-fi signal

To check your wi-fi signal, hold the option key as you click the wi-fi menu in the upper-right corner. You’ll see information that can help diagnose any issues.

  • Network name – also called SSID. Be sure your own network is checked here. Don’t use a neighbor’s or a public or Xfinity wi-fi channel – they may not be secure or provide access to printers, computers, iPhones & other devices on your own network.
  • Channel – channels 1–11 use the older 2.4 GHz frequencies, which can travel farther but result in slower connections. These channels are prone to interference from other nearby wi-fi systems, microwave ovens and others. The channel is determined by the wi-fi router so you may need help changing it. Newer wi-fi routers support multiple channels simultaneously, so your device could connect with one channel or another depending on signal strength. It’s OK to use a low-channel (below 36) once in a while but you shouldn’t have to rely on it every day.
  • RSSI – signal strength. This is a negative number, so closer to zero is stronger. –35 is a good signal strength while –75 would be poor. Moving closer to the router should give you a stronger signal.
  • Noise – background noise. We want less noise, so a lower negative number. –80 is a good noise level; –40 may not be. Eliminating interference will help lower this number. If possible, have your wi-fi router changed to channel 36 or higher. Or see if you can get your neighbors to change their channels to a channel at least 3 channels higher or lower than yours.
  • Signal to Noise ratio – not shown but it’s easy to calculate. Take the noise level and subtract the RSSI. For example, 80 – 35 = 45 is excellent SNR. Lower than 25 results in poor (slow) connections.
  • Transmission (Tx) rate – your speed to the router (circled in the screenshot). We’d expect this to be at least 200 mbps. When the number falls below your internet provider’s speed, you’re not able to get the speed you’re paying for and it’s not the ISP’s fault. If you’re transferring files from one computer to another or backing up over wi-fi, we’d like the Tx rate to be closer to 600 mbps. It can be as high as 1300 mbps in ideal conditions.
  • PHY mode – 802.11ac is the latest & fastest type, although this matters most when you’re doing computer-to-computer transfers within the building. 802.11n is fine for most purposes. If you see 802.11g, there are either too many obstructions between you and the wi-fi router, you’re too far away, or your computer or router are over 6 years old. 802.11b is primitive wi-fi from the early 2000s. All modern Apple equipment can use 802.11ac or 802.11n, so if a particular network never offers them it’s time to get a new router. We recommend an Apple AirPort Extreme.

What about internet speed tests? Sites like www.speedtest.net (requires Flash), the better www.sourceforge.net/speedtest or simple www.fast.com check your internet speed. But that’s only part of the story. Your speed is affected by what the ISP (Comcast, CenturyLink) delivers to your building at the modem, and also the internal wired or wi-fi connection between the modem and your computer or device. So if the speed test site shows only 5 mbps and your wi-fi Tx rate is 250 mbps, you’re getting a strong wi-fi signal but the modem isn’t up-to-speed. Call the ISP to get a faster service. If the test site shows 5 mbps and your Tx rate is 5 mbps, the ISP can’t help you because your internal network is at fault. Confirm this by moving closer to the wi-fi router and test again. If moving closer gives you both higher internet speeds and/or Tx rates, you’ll need to address the wi-fi situation, not the internet provider.

Having trouble? Sometimes the quickest way to solve a problem is disconnecting and reconnecting. Just click the wi-fi menu and Turn Wi-Fi Off. Then click it again and Turn Wi-Fi On. You might get a better signal. If you find you need to do this frequently, you might need to move closer to the router. Contact us or your network staff.

After speaking to a friend I established that this problem is potentially due to the macOS Sierra update. I followed the first step in this link – removing existing Wi-Fi preferences. Which seems to have worked for now.

I had the exact same issue. I went through every link on every result from Google by others who had this issue and nothing worked for me.

A user in one of the Apple threads suggested creating a new user profile, because that had worked for them. When I created a new profile, I got an incessant popup that asked me to login to a VPN account (I have NordVPN but it wasn’t running at the time and I barely use it) — this popup was blocking my access to my wifi though! So I rebooted in safe mode and logged into the new profile. Sure enough, the wifi was back to being fast.

I looked up info about the popup and apparently it’s another known issue on Macs, and the only solution is to uninstall the VPN. So I deleted NordVPN, and the wifi was working fast on the new profile. Then went back to my main profile to start the process of migrating that account data to the new account, only to notice that the wifi was back to being fast on my old profile too now!

Try uninstalling your VPN. I have no idea what the problem was, but in the end, deleting my NordVPN app worked when none of the other solutions made any difference.

As Apple updates its support pages to give more information about the new MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, we’re able to understand more about what these new computers feature or not.

As spotted by graphic designer Anton Bulzomi, the new MacBook Pro has a slower 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) specs than Intel-based 2017-2019 models.

As you can see on this support page here, the 2021 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the 2020 M1 MacBook Pro, share the same 802.11 [email protected] GHz standards with a maximum PHY data rate of 1200 Mbps.

MacBook Pro models from 2017-2019, which are all Intel-based, feature the standard 802.11 [email protected] GHz, which brings a maximum PHY data rate of up to 1300 Mbps.

The big difference here lays in maximum spatial streams, in which the newer MacBook Pro only has 2/MIMO while the older ones have three.

There’s a lot you can speculate about that, including that perhaps the M1 chips aren’t built for more than 2 spatial streams as no iOS device supports more than 2. Not only that, but having fewer spatial streams also help save battery life. Furthermore, 802.11ax/Wi-Fi 6 is only available in the Apple Silicon models, so it’s not quite an apples to apples comparison.

Even though, you shouldn’t worry about this Wi-Fi “limitation.” Bulzomi said he was able to conduct a few tests and only noticed a slight speed difference between the new Macs and the ones from 2017-2019 that are Intel-based.

Wi-Fi speeds are highly subjective as they will greatly depend on your current Wi-Fi and RF environment with factors such as types of access points in use, number of devices on the network, how far you are from the access point, and the RF environment.

The 2021 MacBook Pros can have a slightly slower performance on Wi-Fi when on Wi-Fi 5 compared to previous, but in daily use – you’ll will likely never notice. As a matter of fact, if your workflow needs the absolute top performance, you’re probably using a USB-C to ethernet adaptor or a 10GB ethernet adaptor and not your Wi-Fi connection anyways.

Scan your Wi-Fi area

You’re going to need to scan your area for all of the Wi-Fi networks that your Mac can reach by starting the Wireless Diagnostics Application.

    Hold the option key on your keyboard and click on the Wi-Fi network icon in your Title Bar.

Click Open Wireless Diagnostics. A “Wireless Diagnostics” window will open. Ignore it for now.

You can click Scan Now to get a fresh “look” at all of the access points if yours isn’t listed.

Under Summary, you’ll see the total number of access points. Each access point is then split into the 2.4ghz range and the 5ghz range. (2.4ghz is better for penetrating walls, but is more easily interfered with whilst 5ghz has less penetration but has a more stable connection as it is interfered with by fewer devices).

Also under Summary you’ll see the Best 2.4 GHz and Best 5 GHz channels for your area. These numbers represent the channels that are least used or interfered with in your area.

The 5 GHz range. Not so complicated!

If you have a 5GHz Wi-Fi network, you can take the value from Best 5 GHz at face value and set one of the suggested channels in your Wi-Fi router and be done. Here’s how to do it in your Airport Base Station.

  1. Launch your Airport Utility.
  2. Click your Airport Base Station.

Click Edit. If prompted for a password, enter your Base Station password.

Click the dropdown list next to 5 GHz Channel and select the channel as suggested by the Scan tool.

  • Click Save.
  • Click Update.
  • Wait for your Airport Base Station to reboot and you’re all set!

    The 2.4 GHz range. A bit more involved.

    The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi range is a bit more complicated. Although the Scan may tell you which channels are least used in your area, the dirty little secret is that only 3 channels have the best connectivity due to something called “Channel Overlap”. Channel overlap is beyond the scope of this article but to keep things simple, the channels that do not suffer from channel overlap are channels 1, 6 and 11. These are the best channels to chose from when setting your channels in your router. You’ll notice that most access points will be set to one of these three channels but you can still find out the best channel to choose from by seeing which channel is used the least in your area.

    1. In your Wireless Diagnostics Scan Tool, you’ll notice a heading called RSSI. To keep things simple, the RSSI is the signal strength of an access point. The lower, the better. Click the RSSI tab so that the listing of RSSI’s are in ascending order. Your personal access point should be listed nearest to the top as it’s the closest one to your Mac. If it’s not, rerun your Scan tool physically seated next to your access point.
    2. Look at the first 2.4GHz access point listed below your own in the RSSI list. This access point is the nearest router to you that can cause you interference. Take a note of it’s channel number. You do not want your channel number set to the same channel as this one. For example, if the channel number is a 6, you’d want your channel number set to a 1 or 11.

    If there are many nearby access points, you’ll have to best guess the channel number that is least used and least adjacent to you and set your own channel number to that least used and least adjacent channel.

    Set up your 2.4ghz Channel in your Airport Base Station

    1. Launch your Airport Utility.
    2. Click your Airport Base Station.

    Click Edit. If prompted for a password, enter your Base Station password.

    Click the dropdown list next to 2.4 GHz Channel and select the channel you discerned by using the Scan Tool.

  • Click Save.
  • Click Update.
  • Wait for your Airport Base Station to reboot and you’re all set!

    Wi-Fi will never be the “Best”.

    Wi-Fi is inherently made to be “interfered” with. Even though you can try to limit the amount of interference in your area, the greatest contributor to Wi-Fi connection issues is the number of devices connected to a single access point.     There’s nothing quite as frustrating as slow or intermittent Internet!

    In this article, I’ll show you how to test the speed and quality of your Internet connection, using MacOS’ built-in ‘ping’ command. And, if you’re struggling to even get online, I’ll also be demonstrating how you can use this command to test whether the connection between your Mac and your router might be to blame for your connectivity problems!

    How can I use ‘ping’ to test my Internet speed?

    Your Mac’s ‘ping’ command tests the network by transmitting packets of data to a URL, and then timing how long it takes each packet to come back – kind of like how a sonar sends out a pulse of sound and then waits for the echo.

    By measuring how long it takes each packet to make this round trip, you can see exactly how fast or slow your connection really is. This can help you identify whether your network runs more quickly or slowly at certain times of the day, or whether your Internet connection really is slower than it used to be.

    While you could ‘ping’ a random URL, you can also use this technique to test the speed between your Mac and a specific website, which is handy for troubleshooting any issues you’re having with a particular site.

    To run a simple ‘ping’ test:

    • Open a Finder window.
    • Navigate to ‘Applications > Utilities.’
    • Launch the Terminal app.
    • Type ‘ping’ into the Terminal window, followed by a URL. You can use any URL, so I’m using www.chriswrites.com.
    • Press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard.

    The Terminal will now send some packets of data to this URL, and print the results to the Terminal. Each line displays the size of the packet that was sent, and the time it took this packet to come back – the lower the number, the better!

    By default, the Terminal will keep pinging the network until you tell it to stop, so when you’re ready to terminate the ping test, either use the ‘Control+C’ keyboard shortcut, or close the Terminal window.

    Struggling to connect to the Internet?

    You can also use the ping command to send packets of data to another device. If your Mac is having difficulties connecting to the Internet, then you can use this technique to test whether the connection between your Mac and the router might be to blame.

    Before you can ping your router, you’ll need to know its IP address:

    • Select the ‘Apple’ logo from your Mac’s menu bar.
    • Navigate to ‘System Preferences… > Network.’
    • In the left-hand menu, select the network interface that you want to test, such as ‘Wi-Fi.’
    • Click the ‘Advanced…’ button.
    • Select the ‘TCP/IP’ tab.
    • You’ll find your router’s IP address next to ‘Router.’
    • Make a note of this address, or use your Mac’s ‘Copy’ command.

    In the Terminal window, type ‘ping’ followed by the router’s IP address, and then press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard. Your Mac will then send some data to this address, and display how long the data took to perform the round trip. If the data doesn’t come back, then the Terminal will inform you that this device was unreachable, and you’ll know exactly why you’re struggling to get online.

    If your router is unreachable then it’s worth checking whether macOS’ networking software is working correctly, as this can prevent it from connecting to your router. You perform this check using 127.0.0.1, which is known as the loopback address. In Terminal, run the following command:

    If you don’t receive a response, then you’ll know that your Mac is struggling to connect to your router due to issues with its networking software. You now know exactly where you need to focus your efforts, in order to restore your Internet connection.

    Don’t fancy using the Terminal?

    If you’re not familiar with Terminal commands, then macOS has a built-in Network Utility tool that lets you ping the network using a more traditional user interface. This application is a bit buried in the file system, so the easiest way to launch it is via a Spotlight search:

    • Click the little magnifying glass icon in your Mac’s toolbar.
    • Start typing “network utility,” and then select the application when it appears.
    • Inside the Network Utility app, select the ‘Ping’ tab.
    • Enter the URL that you want to ping.

    • Specify whether you want to send unlimited pings or a specific number of pings, and then click the ‘Ping’ button.

    Your Mac will now perform your ping request, and display its findings in the Network Utility app.
