Message effects have been around for some time now, letting iPhone users send cool messages to each other. There are different kinds of effects that we’ll cover in this tip.

iOS Message Effects

Bubble and Screen Effects

These effects are the most common, and many people will accidentally discover them. Some of them happen automatically, like a balloon effect when you type “Happy birthday” or a firework effect when you type “Happy New Year’s.” You can send them on purpose when you type out a message and long-press the Send button , which looks like an arrow pointing up in the text field.

You’ll see Bubble effects like Slam, Loud, Gentle, and Invisible Ink, as well as full Screen effects like Echo, Spotlight, Balloons, Confetti, Love, Lasers, Fireworks, and Celebration. They’re a great way to add emotion to your messages, in addition to using emoji.

How to send a digital touch message with your apple watch

You can replay these effects by tapping the circular Replay button under the message. If you can’t receive bubble effects, go to Settings > Accessibility , and tap on Motion . Make sure the toggle is turned on next to Auto-Play Message Effects .

Tapback

Tapback gives you a way to add a reaction to an individual message. When you’re inside a conversation, double-tap or long-press a message bubble or a photo, and you’ll see reactions like Heart, Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, Ha Ha, “!!”, and “?”. Other options include replying to a message (in iOS 14), copying a message, and tapping More, which gives you options to delete or forward a message.

Handwriting

To send a handwritten message, turn your iPhone sideways. Tap on the text field and look for a loop icon on the keyboard. You’ll see prewritten messages you can send, or draw in the blank space to write your own message. On the iPad you don’t have to turn it sideways, just look for the icon on the keyboard.

Camera Effects

You can can camera effects on iOS 12 and later to create videos and take photos with Memojis, filters, text, and stickers. When you’re in a conversation, tap on the message field, then tap the camera icon. Tap on the Effects button that looks like a star. Here you can select one of the many effects to use. After you’ve chosen an effect, tap Done and hit the send button.

Digital Touch

Digital Touch is a special feature where you can draw little sketches to send to people. Tap on the message field inside a conversation, then tap the little heart icon with two fingers. You can tap on the black space to see effects, touch and hold the screen with two fingers to see a heartbeat, touch and hold the screen with one finger to send a fireball, tap the screen with two fingers to send a kiss, and send a broken heart by touching and holding the screen with two fingers and dragging down.

If you have an Apple Watch you might find that sending a heartbeat sends your actual heartbeat, not just a generic animation. To add Digital Touch to a photo or video, go to a conversation or start a new one. Tap on the heart icon and then the video icon.

Tap the red circle recording button to create 10 second videos, or tap on the white circle to take a video. Tap on the back button in the upper left to start over, and tap the send button when you’re ready. Messages will delete video messages after two minutes, but you can tap Keep to save them.

Apple included a new feature in the Apple Watch that lets two users communicate quickly through taps and drawings, and by sharing their heart rates.

Apple’s press event has concluded, and we have learned a great deal of new information about the company’s first smartwatch. One of the most interesting things we saw on the Apple Watch was a new feature called Digital Touch. This allows two Apple Watch users to communicate with one another without texting or calling.

Here’s how it works:

Rather than attempting to write a text a message on such a small screen, the Digital Touch feature lets two Apple Watch owners communicate through taps and doodles. While Apple didn’t say, we assume that two users would have to agree to be friends before being able to use Digital Touch. Once the two of you are connected, it’s time to start communicating.

Tapping

The first method you can use to contact a friend or loved one is by tapping the screen on the Apple Watch. This is similar to the Poke feature on Facebook. You can tap a specific pattern on your watch face and a friend will be able to feel it on his or her wrist through gentle vibrations.

Sketching

The second method is to sketch an animated message. This can be done by dragging your finger across the screen to quickly draw a colored sketch that can be sent to a friend.

Sharing

Digital Touch also lets you easily share your heart rate with others. When you press two fingers two the screen, the built-in heart-rate sensor will automatically record and send your beats per minute reading to your contact. Apple calls this an “intimate way to tell someone how you feel.”

On Apple Watch, the Digital Touch feature enables the user to send a sketch, a tap on the wrist or the user’s current heartbeat to another Apple Watch. To access this feature you can use the Friends app. For a sketch or a tap, the user can select the color to use by using the Color Picker. It is possible to customize the colors in the Color Picker with the colors the user prefers. Here come all three Digital Touch communication methods, that’s sketches, taps on the wrist and your heartbeat.

Digital Touch: How to Send a Sketch, a Tap or a Heartbeat

  • Lift your wrist to wake Apple Watch and display the watch face.
  • Click the side button to open the Friends app.
  • Turn the Digital Crown to select the friend you want to contact, and the friend’s initials will appear in the center circle.
  • Wait a second or tap the center circle. The friend appears full screen.
  • Tap Digital Touch, and the Digital Touch screen will appear.
  • Tap the Color Picker icon in the upper-right corner. This icon shows the current color. The Color Picker will appear.
  • The circle with the hole indicates the current color.
  • Tap the color you want to use for a tap or a sketch, and the Color Picker will disappear.
  • The Color Picker icon takes on the color you choose.
  • Tap the screen with the pattern of taps you want to send, and a circle will appear briefly for each tap.
  • Tap the Color Picker icon and the Color Picker will appear.
  • Tap the color you want to use, and the Color Picker disappears.
  • Draw with your finger on the screen to create and send a sketch. After a few seconds, the sketch disappears.
  • Place two fingers on the screen to send your heartbeat. Now a heart symbol appears, and then disappears.

Note: To get other colors in the Color Picker, tap the Color Picker icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to display the Color Picker. Tap and hold the current color that you want to change until the color wheel appears. Move the selection circle either by turning the Digital Crown or by dragging with your finger until it shows the color you want. Then tap Done.

Send a Digital Touch

To send a Digital Touch, scroll to the end of a message, and then tap Digital Touch icon to open the drawing canvas. You can sketch something, send a kiss or heartbeat, or show emotion.

  • To send a sketch: Draw on the screen. Tap Colors to change the color, then start drawing again. Stop drawing to send a sketch.
  • To send a tap: Tap the screen one or more times. Tap Colors to change the color. Stop tapping to send.
  • To send a kiss: Tap two fingers on the screen one or more times. Stop tapping to send a kiss.
  • To send your heartbeat: Place two fingers on the screen until you see and feel your heartbeat. Lift to send the heartbeat.
  • To break a heart: Place two fingers on the screen until you see and feel your heartbeat. Drag down to send.
  • To show anger: Touch and hold one finger on the display until you see a flame. Then lift the finger to send “anger”.

To see a Digital Touch: To see or feel a Digital Touch from your friend, tap the notification on your Apple Watch or iPhone with iOS 10. Make sure that you and your friend have the latest versions of iOS and watchOS.

Tips for Successful Digital Touch sketching

  • First at all, when you start the drawing, think about where the finished image will be positioned on the screen.
  • Before you get started, visualize what you want to draw and plan what colors you are going to use.
  • To pause the drawing, use the color menu.
  • Attempt to draw simple objects. If the project is complicated, consider if there is a detail within that object that you could zoom in on and draw instead.
  • Use different colors to help explain the object.

To use Apple Watch and connect with your closest contacts, you can press the device’s side-button. Once activated, no matter on what screen you’re on, the preferred contacts screen is opened. Your favorite buddies are listed in a circular pattern.

Friends are added or removed with the help of the Apple Watch app available on your iPhone running iOS 8.2 or newer.

Contacts labeled as buddies are picked by rotating your Watch’s digital crown, until the aimed pal is highlighted.
At the bottom of the contact’s screen, you find the communication options: engage in a call or send a message.
If your friend also owns an Apple Watch, the Digital Touch icon is displayed in-between calling and texting buttons.
The Digital Touch icon is represented by a right hand pointing with the index finger.

Tap it to select and initiate Apple Watch’s more personal and intimate way of communication!

3 Cool Digital Touch Features
This revolutionary way of communication allows you to send:
1. Animated Sketches – Use your finger to draw a sketch on your Watch’s screen and send it to the selected contact. Your friend will receive the animated drawing, in real time, exactly how you created it on your gadget’s screen.
How to send a digital touch message with your apple watch2. Taps as Thoughts – Tap your Apple Watch’s screen, whenever in Digital Touch mode, and send vibration patterns from wrist-to-wrist, to signal your contact that you’re thinking at him/her at that particular point in time!

3. Heartbeat Sharing – Rest two fingers on your screen and this triggers heartbeat sharing.
The special built-in sensors, available on the back of your Apple Watch case, record and send your heart’s pulsations towards the selected contact.

The videos are “guided tours” of some of the upcoming gadget’s big features.

This story is part of a group of stories called

Uncovering and explaining how our digital world is changing — and changing us.

The hype train for the Apple Watch has started a-rollin’.

Apple released today a new series of “guided tour” videos that show off some of the features of its wearable device, which launches on April 24.

The first video, “Welcome,” briefly highlights some of the functionality that will be available to early adopters of the Watch, such as music control and fitness tracking, before showing how to do things like swipe to apps or notifications, see a menu of all your apps, or scroll up and down lists — which can be done with either a screen-blocking finger or the device’s “digital crown,” a.k.a. the watch stem, that round thing on the right.

The second video shows how to respond to an SMS message notification. Although the Watch is receiving these notifications from a paired iPhone, it’s possible to send quick pre-set replies to messages without pulling out one’s phone, or respond using voice. And, of course, there are emojis.

“Faces,” as explained by the third video, are the different default images and interfaces displayed when you look at your watch, such as an analog-looking clock with minute and hour hands. It’ll be possible to customize the different things you’ll find there — for example, do you want to see the phase of the moon in the top right, or the current temperature?

The last of the four videos showcases “digital touch” — in English, how to find your friends and send the ones who also shelled out for an Apple Watch a tap, a drawing or your heartbeat.

Apple’s website lists more “guided tour” videos ahead, dedicated to features like phone calls and Siri. Preorders for the watch begin on April 10.

How to send a digital touch message with your apple watch

If you’ve been keeping up with the new iOS 10 platform that’s been rolling out to iPhones this past week, you might have gotten to play with a brand new feature called Digital Touch. I’ve been playing with it ever since the beta release, and can’t help but ask — is the Digital Touch heart my actual heartbeat ? It sure looks like your heartbeat, after all.

For those of us that never owned an Apple Watch, this feature has been keeping people on their toes since its release. Many users have wondered if the feature actually takes a measurement of your heartbeat, or if it is just a generic in-app sample randomly assigned by an algorithm. Turns out, it is your heartbeat when you’re using the Apple Watch. Here’s the sitch for iPhone: if you’re wearing an Apple Watch or other heartbeat-measuring device synced to it, then it will pull from the measurements of that heartbeat in Digital Touch. Otherwise, it will pull from a standard default.

So basically as long as you have a sensor, your friends can know just how sweaty and gross you feel after a run, or how excited you got when your BeyoncГ© tickets came in the mail. Your heartbeat will show the way! You can also be very cute when talking to a loved one or a significant other by sending them a little snippet of your heart. Some have even done this with newborn babies. This feature is all about how you use it. It can be your go-to, or it can just be another cool thing that your phone does.

To use this feature on your iPhone all you have to do is open up your messages and pick a person you want to talk to in the most personal way possible. For the purposes of this demo — I picked myself.

First, Open iMessage

As you can see, we have a whole menagerie of options here that we didn’t have before.

Press The “Digital Touch” Button

You will need to click on the icon with a heart and two fingers to access the Digital Touch feature. Because Apple employees geniuses that understand user-friendly technology, they included a little guide on the side of the screen that lets you know exactly how to use this feature in real time.

Press Down Two Fingers And Hold

You will need to press your two fingers on the black pad, and hold them there for a second. The gesture will capture your personal heartbeat and send it on its way! The finished product will look like the above photo. Your friends and family will be able to inspect your heartbeat and send you one back. You can also use the feature to send pulses and drawings that replay for the reader. This is going to change the texting game like nothing else!

How to send a digital touch message with your apple watch

Assistive Touch is a new accessibility feature introduced in watchOS 8. Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge

Starting with watchOS 8, Apple introduced a new accessibility feature called Assistive Touch. The cool thing about this feature is that it allows you to control the watch via gestures and your arm movements. Meaning, now you don’t even need to touch the Apple Watch screen to use it.

The tech behind it is pretty neat. Using on-device machine learning, the feature makes use of the watch’s accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart rate sensor to read how your muscles and tendons move. The result is that the watch can tell when you’re pinching your fingers or clenching your fists. You can also enable a motion-based cursor that works like a mini-mouse when you tilt your arm.

To be clear, Apple developed Assistive Touch to make the Apple Watch easier to use if you have limited mobility or limb differences. However, it can also be a convenient tool for those moments when you don’t have full use of one or both hands. Maybe you’re whipping up something messy in the kitchen. Maybe it’s freezing out and you really don’t want to peel off your gloves to use the touchscreen. Whatever the scenario, Assistive Touch can help you answer calls, start workouts, access settings, use Apple Pay, activate Siri, and navigate various menus and apps.

You can shake your wrist to activate Assistive Touch.

First things first — which Apple Watch do you have? Assistive Touch is a new feature, and unfortunately it only works if you have an Apple Watch SE, Series 6, or Series 7. If you’ve got a compatible watch, here’s how to get started.

You can choose to set it up (and then manage it) either on your iPhone or on the Watch itself. There is a minor advantage to the phone as it’s easier to navigate.

  • In the My Watch tab, scroll down to the Accessibility menu.
  • Select Assistive Touch.
  • Toggle on Assistive Touch and enable Hand Gestures.

On the Apple Watch:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to Accessibility.
  • Select Assistive Touch and enable Hand Gestures.

If you choose to set it up on your phone, you’ll be prompted to practice the pinching and clenching gestures directly on the watch. You should take the time to do it, but if you’re in a hurry, you can always hit the Learn More link underneath the Hand Gestures toggle.

You can also use a combination of the motion pointer and hand gestures.

Once Assistive Touch is enabled, double clench to activate it. The default gesture settings are as follows: pinch once to go forward, pinch twice to go backward, clench once to tap and clench twice for the Action Menu. The Action Menu is where you select options such as controlling the digital crown, scrolling, Apple Pay, and Siri. As for navigation, you’ll see a highlighted outline indicating what complication, app, or button you’re currently on.

To bring up the motion pointer, double clench twice to bring up the Action Menu. From there, pinch to find the Interaction button. Clench to open the menu, navigate to the motion pointer button and clench again. You should see the cursor from there and then you’ll be able to tilt your arm in various directions to scroll through menus, swipe through screens, and tap buttons. You can also avoid tapping altogether by hovering the cursor over the complication or app you want to select.

The default gestures are to pinch to move forward, and pinch twice to move backward.

I’m not going to lie: there’s a learning curve to using Assistive Touch. I don’t have the best memory when it comes to gesture controls, so I had to practice before I remembered which gesture did what while going about my daily business. There were a lot of times where I accidentally did the wrong gesture and had to start over again. Likewise, I had to really practice with the motion pointer to use it effectively. In general, depending on which method you’re using — gesture controls or the motion pointer — you’ll need a little patience when getting started.

That’s where customization comes in. If you don’t feel like the default settings work for you, you can reprogram them in the Watch app or directly from the wrist.

For example, say you want a quicker way to access the motion pointer. You can reassign double pinch to automatically bring it up. Speaking of which, you can also customize the motion pointer’s sensitivity, activation time, movement tolerance, and hot edges to better suit your needs.

To reprogram gestures, head back to the Hand Gestures menu and tap the one you want to reprogram. From there, you’ll see a list of available actions, menus, or controls.

If at any point you feel like you went a little overboard, you can always go back to square one by tapping “Reset to Default.”

Double clenching both activates Assistive Touch and brings up the Action Menu.

  • Turn on Quick Actions in the Hand Gestures menu. For certain apps, this will allow you to double clench to confirm when prompted. If you get a call, for instance, you’ll see a message telling you to double clench to answer.
  • Enable Dwell Control in the Motion Pointer menu and select “Shake to start.” This lets you shake your wrist to bring up the cursor. No menu navigation required.
  • Try out Auto Scanning. The default is set to manual, but turning this setting on continuously cycles through the available buttons, apps, and complications. This cuts down on how many gestures you need to navigate through menus and screens.
  • For better visibility, toggle on High Contrast in the Appearance menu. In the Customize Menu, you can also select Large Menu to increase icon sizes.
  • Enable Side Button Confirmation. This lets you use Assistive Touch in lieu of double-clicking the side button for things like Apple Pay.

Apple Watch – Not receiving Digital Touch

I got my Apple Watch a few days ago and I have been happily using it and enjoying every bit of it. It took me a while to sort out the settings (there are many), as well as figuring out what notifications I wanted to receive in the watch… For example, I quickly realised that getting notifications from Twitter was a bit too much (many mates I suppose), and I did like the idea of being reminded about standing up and all the rest of that.

One thing I had not been able to try was the Digital Touch messaging that you can do with the watch. Digital touch is the name Apple used for sending taps, scribbles and heart beats. In order to use it you need at least a contact with an Apple Watch. Of course you can always sign up for the Lonely Heart(beats) service people set up. I decided to wait… and finally yesterday I got to start using it. The only problem was that my friend could get my taps, but I was not able to receive any… I even thought that there was something wrong with mine… It turns out that it is (yet another) setting that needs to be taken into account. It seems that the Digital Touch works with the way in which you are set to start up iMessage conversations.

In order for the Digital Touch taps to be received you need to make sure that your iPhone starts conversations from the email address that is associated with your Apple Account, which is not necessarily the same as your iCloud!

You can check what address your phone uses for new iMessages

  1. Go Settings → Messages → Send & Receive,
  2. Look at the section called “start new conversations from”,
  3. Make sure there is a tick next to the email address associated with your Apple Account
  4. Also, check that your contacts have that email to start new conversations in the contact information they have about you.

I t’s not hard to look back at innovation cycles to see how technology advancements have impacted how we communicate. From the pencil to the printing press to computers to the Internet, and more recently, our smartphones, each has evolved communication in some way.

Each innovation has brought with it the ability to communicate both verbally and non-verbally in new forms. The telephone itself made verbal communication possible from a distance. Computers brought non-verbal communication into the digital era, evolving physical written letters into a digital form capable of traveling at near real-time speeds. The cell phone made long-distance verbal communication possible from any location. Smartphones further made the full spectrum of verbal and non-verbal communication possible from just about any location.

However, what do we learn when we study these technological advancements and how they have evolved our communication methods? We learn that ultimately, we have enabled new context in which to communicate digitally. In essence, technology has brought more communication options.

For example, prior to cell phones, many of us had pagers. The pager was basically an extension of the fixed landline. Someone could page you with a number and you would go to a fixed-line phone and call the person back. As teenagers, we created numeric codes to send messages: 43770 was “Hello,” for example; 143 was “I love you.” Effectively, every number or number combination had an alphabetical-letter equivalent. Looking back, this was essentially an early form of text messaging which, in and of itself, was a new option for communication. Not all conversation requires a lengthy voice dialogue. More often than not, short messages can suffice. It is the options that technology brings us that allow us to communicate in different ways depending on the context of the conversation.

Many of you will also remember your first experiences with a BlackBerry. There was something profound about being able to see your email from a device other than your personal computer. We learned very quickly that, for some emails, quick responses would suffice and that the BlackBerry was great for this. But for other emails, a more lengthy response was necessary. For these tasks, we would return to the PC. The context of the response dictates which device we use in a multi-device world. This is what I mean by technology giving us options. Prior to the BlackBerry (or Palm Pilot, etc.), the PC was our only option for both long- and short-form email communication. As innovations like the BlackBerry were created, we were presented with more options.

Digital Touch

There are plenty more examples I can dig into but I wanted to frame the points above to turn our attention to smartwatches in general and the Apple Watch in particular. While dozens of questions remain about the Apple Watch, it is perhaps its potential to add a new communication element I find most intriguing at this point. Despite what I mentioned above about humans communicating through verbal and written forms, I left out another vital communication tactic: the physical one.

As part of my continuing study of humans, I became aware of some of the modern research on the science of touch in human communication. This article in particular from Berkeley is a good starter on the subject, and this line is one of the most interesting:

In recent years, a wave of studies has documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. This research is suggesting that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health.

The physical connection has been proven time and time again to be essential to healthy relationships. A series of studies highlighted in the report showed how people, even strangers, can communicate emotion through touch. Touch is an essential part of how we communicate. It is very personal and very intimate, yet is foreign to the digital world.

What Apple is presenting with the Apple Watch appears like it may be the start of bringing digital touch as a communication method to the digital age. And if we think about the type of device that makes this type of digital touch communication possible, it makes sense it is done through a device we wear rather than one we keep in our pockets or bags.

While Apple may lead this effort initially, this is something that could expand even wider as the idea expands. A leading company in haptics named Immersion has been working on similar haptic communication as a language for years and could bring that solution to any wearable device.

In the same way technology has expanded our communication options, it has still not replaced many of our existing communication methods. In a way, communication has been extended through technology, but not all prior forms have been made obsolete. Similarly, digital touch will not replace human contact, but when we are away from our loved ones, digital touch has the potential to extend that unique and intimate communication method in ways not possible before.

Add a little flair to iMessages, thanks to the iOS 10 update that allows for the inclusion of everything from shooting stars, to fireworks, to emphasizing a point with “loud” texts and emojis.

Bubble Effects

Text and emojis can now be emphasized thanks to new Bubble Effects in the Messages app in iOS 10.

1. Open the Messages app and type in a message to send.

2. Hold down the send button, which is now the arrow on the right of your message.

3. A “Bubble” screen pops up and gives options for Slam, Loud, Gentle, and Invisible Ink.

4. The Slam option slams the message onto the screen with a few shakes for affect. The Loud option makes the message large and shakes it at the reader then brings it back to a normal size on the screen.

The Gentle option initially makes the text appear small and eventually grows it to normal text size. Lastly, Invisible Ink jumbles the message into numerous small dots. Tapping on the message makes the words appear.

Screen Effects

Part of the iOS 10 Messages app updates also includes a variety of built-in Screen Effects like balloons, confetti, lasers, fireworks and a shooting star.

To reach the Screen Effects:

1. Open the Messages app and type in a message to a contact.

3. The “Bubble” screen will initially be chosen, but select the “Screen” option to the right to view the different effects.

4. The first option is a group of balloons that shoots across the screen. Second, is confetti showering down. Next is a pink laser. Finally, a shooting star.

5. After selecting a Screen Effect, send the message by hitting the send button to the right of the message.

You can also cancel the Screen Effect by hitting the X button bellow the send button.

A lot of criticism has been thrown at Apple Watch for failing to offer more untethered options. Chief among these are its lack of standalone GPS and cellular radios, as folks who want to cut the (wireless) cord — or accidentally cut it by forgetting their handset when they leave the house — find that they pretty much can’t. Of course, there are situational workarounds that Apple’s baked in. By now, everyone knows that your Apple Watch can approximate your workout when you leave your iPhone behind, which is a nice touch for those who want to go for a light, unladen run.

But Apple Watch has another trick up its sleeve: It will send and receive iMessages via Wi-Fi, even if your iPhone is off or AWOL.

There are a couple of caveats, however: This only works if your Apple Watch is on a Wi-Fi network where it was previously paired with your iPhone. And this makes sense, since there’s no way to manually select a Wi-Fi access point (or type in its password) on Apple Watch itself. But once both of these devices have been on a network together, that login data is saved locally on Apple Watch, and the wearable will get online wherever its been online before. From there, it will send and receive iMessages (although it will sometimes later tell you those messages were not delivered, when they in fact were):

But even though this works with iMessage texts, it will not work with regular texts, so your desired contacts must be iPhone, iPad, or Mac users — with iMessage enabled — for this to work properly. Of course, since Digital Touch presumably uses the same protocol as iMessage, that feature also works, meaning that Apple Watch users don’t need their iPhones to be on or around in order to send haptic notes back and forth. (It occurred to us that Apple might be using its cross-platform VOIP technology inside Apple Watch, too, and that this Wi-Fi feature might also work without a tether. Unfortunately, when trying to initiate a call without its iPhone piggyback, Apple Watch doesn’t even make the attempt. It simply splashes up a “CALL FAILED” screen the second you tap that telephone icon.)

You can test this yourself: Just make sure you’re on a familiar network, and then turn your iPhone off (or disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth). Now, use your Apple Watch to send an iMessage or some Digital Touch input to someone in your contacts list. Then wait for a response.

In the real world, this extended capability has immediate potential, and it underscores that — whether or not Apple goes full Apple Watch LTE — there is a valid need for the wearable to work as a communications suite without needing an iPhone close by. Right now, this limited feature is great for folks who lose or leave their handsets at home, and it’s really useful for when you’re out and about and your iPhone’s battery dies while your Apple Watch is still going strong. (Mine outlasts my iPhone 6 by something like three to five hours each day, so I’d reckon this scenario is pretty common.) It also means that you can leave that iPhone at the house, take a jog while your Apple Watch tracks your workout and blasts your music, and then message your friend to come get you when you give up at Cold Stone a few miles from home.
