Sending Giphy GIFs on WhatsApp

The easiest way to send GIFs in WhatsApp is to use the built-in GIF function, first introduced to the service in 2017. The function allows you to search the vast library of GIFs available on Giphy and send animated clips without having to save them on your iPhone first.

How to send gifs in whatsapp

To search for a Giphy GIF to send, tap the Stickers icon to the right of the text entry field in your WhatsApp chat. At the bottom of the window, tap the GIF icon. From here you can browse from a number of preset categories, or if you’ve got a specific GIF in mind, tap the magnifying glass in the bottom-left to keyword search.

Once you’ve found the perfect GIF, tap it and then tap the send icon to share it with your friends.

Converting videos to GIFs

WhatsApp already allows you to send existing videos but you can also convert them to GIFs if you wish. The only restriction on this is that the GIF can’t be longer than six seconds in length, so videos exceeding that duration won’t offer the conversion option.

Sending a video

To send a video you need to start a message then select the plus icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. A pop-up menu appears from which you need to select Photo & Video Library. Now select any video and press the Send button (a blue circle with a paper aeroplane inside).

Sending a video as a GIF

If you prefer to send the file as a GIF then follow the same steps as above but be sure to select a video that’s no longer than six seconds in length. When you’ve chosen one you’ll see an option just beneath the timeline at the top of the screen which has a camera highlighted in blue with GIF to the right of it.

How to send gifs in whatsapp

Tapping on the GIF option will immediately start the video playing on a loop. By dragging either end of the timeline bar you can set the start and stop points of the clip. There are also options across the top for cropping, adding emojis, text, or drawing on the image. When you’re happy with your creation, tap the Send button and you’re done.

Sending Live Photos

Owners of an iPhone 6S, 6S Plus or later can also send their Live photos to friends on WhatsApp. They’ll need to be converted to GIFs first though so that users of other smartphones will be able to open them.

To do this follow the steps above for sending a video but when you locate the Live photo press hard on it so that it pops out. Slide upwards and you’ll see a menu appear which includes the option to Select as GIF.

How to send gifs in whatsapp

Select this and then you’ll be able to include it in your message.

Sending existing GIFs

Over time it’s possible that you’ll accrue a number of GIFs in your camera roll due to them being included in messages you’ve received from other people. These are very easy to attach to new messages thanks to a dedicated GIF search feature.

To find GIFs start a new message in WhatsApp then press the plus icon in the bottom left corner, select Photo & Video Library, then in the bottom left corner you’ll see the Search icon with GIF next to it.

How to send gifs in whatsapp

Tap this and you’ll be presented with a list of the available GIFs. Select one and then you’ll have access to the same editing tools that include the start and finish points, cropping, and annotation. Tap the send button when you’re finished and within moments your friends will be enjoying your video vignette.

Sending GIFs from the web

If you’ve found a GIF online that you want to include in a message then that’s easy to do as well. You can use dedicated sites such as Giphy or just look for them on social media feeds or through the normal web searches.

How to send gifs in whatsapp

When you find one you like, press and hold the screen until you see an option to Copy the image. Do this then go to WhatsApp, start a new message, then tap and hold the text field until the Paste option appears. Tap this and you should see the GIF appear, complete with the editing tools we covered previously. Make your amends and then dispatch it forthwith to your chums.

A GIF, which is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, is a lossless format for image files that support both static and animated images. It is called a lossless format because it does not degrade the quality of the image. GIF is an image format meant for sharing on the Internet. GIFs store image data using indexed colour, meaning a standard GIF image can include a maximum of 256 colours. Though they can theoretically store more than 250 colours, such GIFs will have a file size almost same with JPEG and hence they are rarely used.

GIFs are not ideal for storing digital images like those captured using digital or smartphone cameras since GIFs contain a limited number of colours. GIFs are most suitable for web buttons and banners since these typically do not require many colours.

WhatsApp supports GIF and it does have its vast collection of GIFs we can choose from. Most times the GIFs provided by WhatsApp are appropriate to express what we want and hence we do pick from the WhatsApp collection. However, there are unique ideas or expressions we can’t accurately communicate with the WhatsApp inbuilt GIFs. It then becomes necessary to create our custom GIFs. WhatsApp allows its users to create their custom GIFs in the WhatsApp app. The process is simple. It is similar to sending a video to someone, with just a little tweak and WhatsApp converts the video to GIF for you. The two methods explained below are for iPhone, iPad and Android.

Creating custom GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone

Step One:

Open the WhatsApp messenger on your iPhone or iPad. It can be found on your home screen or in your App folder.

Step Two:

Scroll to the chat you want to send the GIF to. Tap on the chat to open the conversation.

Step Three:

Tap on the Attachment icon, which will open the attachment options in a new pop-up. The attachment icon is a “+” icon on the left-hand side of the conversation.

Step Four:

Select the Photo and Video Library from the pop-up menu. It will open your phone’s photo and video gallery.

Step Five:

Look for the video you want to convert to GIF and tap on it. WhatsApp will open the video in the WhatsApp’s video editor.

Step Six:

Tap the GIF button on the top right of the editor. The GIF icon is next to the Video icon beside the video you have uploaded. Note that the GIF icon will look white on a blue background when selected. Once the GIF is selected, the video will automatically turn to GIF.

You can trim the length of the GIF in the timeline. Simply drag the line demarcating the length of the video to your desired length. Note also that GIFs are usually small in size so if the video is large, above 850kb, the GIF icon will disappear, meaning that the size of the video is too large. You can reduce the size of the video by trimming the video in the timeline until the GIF icon appears beneath the timeline. To send the GIF, simply tap the send icon.

Creating Custom GIFs in WhatsApp on Android

Step One:

Open WhatsApp messenger on your Android phone. You can find WhatsApp on the home screen or in the Apps section. Tap the WhatsApp icon to open it.

Step Two:

Scroll to the chat you want to send the GIF to. Tap on the chat to open the conversation

Step Three:

Tap on the Attachment icon, which will open the attachment options in a new pop-up. The attachment icon is a paperclip icon on the right-hand side of the text area.

Step Four:

Select the Gallery icon from the pop-up menu.

Note that the GIF icon will look white on the light-green background when selected.

If you know me well and read my articles often, you should know that I have an undying love for updates and upgrades. WhatsApp, being one of the best messaging Apps in our world today has got some tweaks and updates up its sleeve. Sometime in 2016, WhatsApp integrated the bold, strikethrough and italic feature which were amazingly outstanding and accepted by users all around the globe. Today, I’ll tell you about a feature on WhatsApp that has been around for a while. I’ll teach you how to send GIFs in WhatsApp.

What is a GIF?

You must be wondering, what is heck is a GIF? I read a pretty big dictionary and learned that a GIF is a lossless format for image files that supports both animated and static images, and in my own words I’d simply say a GIF is an image that moves. Weird definition right? LOL, yeah I know. But I guess that would do.

Trust me on this, many persons use WhatsApp and most of them don’t know that there is a feature that lets them search for GIFs and send GIFs. I, personally used WhatsApp for a long time before realizing that there was a special button for GIFs in WhatsApp.

With this feature of WhatsApp, you can find just about any GIF to compliment your chat with a friend or family member. My favorite part of the GIF feature on WhatsApp is that I can search for GIFs on WhatsApp using keywords. It is really amazing. Don’t worry, I will show you how to access the GIF feature on WhatsApp and also show you how to search for specific GIFs using keywords.

Another thing you need to consider doing before you go ahead to try the steps below is ”make sure your WhatsApp is up to date”. If you are using the latest version of WhatsApp, then that’s great.

Okay, Lets move on to how you can actually send GIFs in WhatsApp.

The next thing I’d talk about is how to use the search feature. Here’s how it works.

After you tap on the GIF symbol, Tap on the search icon or symbol to search for a GIF of your choice. Input a keyword to see related GIFs. You could input ”crying” to see GIFs related to crying, you could input ”Hello” and a bunch of GIFs related to ”Hello” will pop up for you to choose from.

Some people would argue, but WhatsApp Messenger (now WhatsApp for Facebook) is the most popular messaging platform, being used by over 2 billion people across the world now.

It is available on the phone (Android and iOS) and also on the desktop (macOS and Windows PC).

GIFs and WhatsApp

GIFs (or Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format that falls under the file category known as bitmaps (map of bits). GIFs often last for a second – two seconds max.

This article will guide you on how to send GIFs in WhatsApp – on Android, iOS, and WhatsApp Web.

On Android

Before you share GIFs, make sure your account is activated on your phone. If this is done, follow these carefully and finely broken-down steps:

  1. Tap on the WhatsApp icon to open it. By default, it opens on the ‘Chats’ tab and a list of chats will be displayed.
  2. You must be having someone you want to send a GIF to. This could be a single person’s chat or a group chat. Navigate or scroll to that specific chat and tap on it. Messages will be displayed.
  3. Tap on the text box. Your phone’s keyboard will be shown.
  4. To get to a GIF, tap on the smiley face icon that is just on the immediate left of the text box. The emojis (smiley faces, emoticons) that you have recently used will be shown.
  5. On the bar that appears below the emojis, there are three icons there – one for smileys, another for GIFs, and another for stickers. Tap on the GIF one.
  6. You can now scroll through the list of many GIFs. Pick the one you feel will communicate your message best.
  7. It will zoom in to the ‘Send GIF’ screen where you can add a caption.
  8. Then, you can tap on the green send button. You have successfully sent your GIF.

On iOS

Compared to Androids, it is easier to send GIFs on iOS and the procedure is not complicated.

  1. Tap on the WhatsApp icon to launch the application.
  2. Open the chat of the person or the group you want to send the GIF to.
  3. When the app opens, tap the ‘+’ icon that appears immediately on the left side of the messaging text box.
  4. The screen that opens will display a button labeled ‘Photo and Video Library’. This displays the images, clips, and videos that are in your local storage.
  5. On the bottom-left corner, tap on the GIF button which is next to the magnifying glass icon.
  6. Add a caption if you wish and then send it.

On Web

This should be the same for both macOS and Windows PC:

  1. After scanning the QR code, your account will be displayed on WhatsApp Web’ screen.
  2. Tap on the chat you want to send the GIF. The chat will be displayed on the right side, occupying most of the screen.
  3. Then, tap on the smiley face icon on the bottom-left corner of the chat.
  4. Tap on ‘GIF’. On Web, several tabs are displayed which are labeled ‘Trending’, ‘Haha’, ‘Sad’, ‘Love’, ‘Reactions’, ‘Sport’ and ‘TV’. These tabs make your GIF choice very specific.
  5. Tap on any tab, pick a GIF and after adding a caption, send it.

Easy, right?

Sending a GIF is quite easy. GIFs help communication to be better. Where words are not enough to pass a particular message, GIFs are there to fill the gap.

Instead of typing ‘haha’ or sending the ‘laughing’ emoji, try to send a funny GIF today!
