How to set up firefox to use google apps for opening everything

A few months ago, the Mozilla Firefox Start Page suddenly started using Aol search instead of Google when I used the search bar. I can’t remember whether I did anything to AIM or something when it happened, but on the navigation bar, my search engine is still Google. I really want to use Google instead of Aol search, and I don’t want to change my home page?

Chosen solution

Change the about:home search engine back to Google.

Firefox button > Web Developer -> Scratchpad –
copy and paste this script into Scratchpad > then hit Execute > Run

You can set Firefox as your default browser on your Android device.

Table of Contents

  • 1 Android version 7 and newer
  • 2 Android version 6
  • 3 Android version 5 and older
    • 3.1 Step 1: Clear the current browser that opens links
    • 3.2 Step 2: Set Firefox for Android to be the default browser for opening links

Tap the menu button.

  • Tap Settings .
  • Tap the Set as default browser toggle. The DEFAULT DEVICES screen displays.
  • Tap Browser app . The BROWSER APP screen displays.
  • Tap the Firefox for Android radio button.
    1. In the Settings menu on your device, tap Apps & notifications (it may be called Apps or Applications on some versions of Android).
    2. Tap Advanced (you may have to tap on the Gear icon first on some versions of Android).
    3. Tap Default apps .
    4. Tap Browser app to open a list of choices.
    5. Tap Firefox for Android to select it.

Step 1: Clear the current browser that opens links

    1. Open the Settings application and tap on Apps . On some versions of Android, this button is labeled Applications or Application manager and you may have to tap on Manage applications before the next step.
    2. Tap on the All tab.
    3. Tap on the current browser that opens links. This is usually the default browser which is called “Browser” or “Internet”.
    4. Tap on Clear defaults to prevent this browser from opening links by default. If you haven’t installed another browser or you have installed another browser like Opera and set it as your default browser, then Clear defaults will be grayed out. If you have installed another browser, go back to the previous step and repeat with the default browser.

Step 2: Set Firefox for Android to be the default browser for opening links

    1. Open a link in an Android application like the Mail application.
    2. Tap on Firefox for Android and then tap on Always .

How to set up firefox to use google apps for opening everything

How do I get Firefox to open to Google when I click on a new tab? It used be set to do that before Firefox updated itself. Now it opens to a page with a bunch of different website thumbnail. I don’t care about that. I hate it. I just want it to open right to Google. Please tell me how to correct this problem. Thanks.

Hi, from Firefox 41, you need to use the add-on New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement), to make changes to the New Tab page.

Once installed, open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions, then look for New Tab Override and click on Options to set your preference.

You may then need to restart Firefox for any changes to take effect.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

If https://www.google.com/ is your home page as well as the page you want on your new tab, there is a simpler-to-set-up extension that simply opens your home page on the new tab:

If you use a different home page, the New Tab Override extension linked by Scribe offers that flexibility.

How to set up firefox to use google apps for opening everything

Is it possible to allow Firefox Preview to open links in their respective apps instead of having to click the ‘Open in App’ button every time?’

I want to open a reddit link in a native Android app.

I click the link and the browser redirects me to the respective Reddit web page. I open the menu and click the ‘Open in App’ button.

I click the link and the native Android app opens.

It saves clicks and bandwidth by not opening the Reddit web page.

Good to hear that it’s planned for a future release. Thank you for helping me!

I should be able to help with this:

    • Open the Firefox preview menu
    • Select Settings
    • Scroll down to Open links in apps

Switch this on and links should open automatically in the native Android app.

Thanks for reaching out to me. I can’t find the “Open links in App” switch in the settings menu. Is this the menu that shows when clicking the three vertical dots on the bottom right and then clicking “Settings” with the little cog before it?

    Yes, that is the one.

I must admit that I using the Nightly test version, so if the app option is not in Settings, it soon will be.

Although the feature is added in firefox nightly preview it does not work properly like chrome or edge. most of the cases it is unable to identify the app and refuse to open. in other cases it opens the link in app and also the link in browser which seems redundant.

Attaching one screenshot. If i open this link in edge or chrome it directly opens in amazon app. Same for some playstore app links.
